The 500-kt/a (550,000-stpy) refinery in Burnside, LA, owned by Almatis Inc. produced specialty alumina used in the abrasives, ceramics, chemical and refractory industries. The 1.2-Mt/a (1.32 million-stpy) refinery in Gramercy, LA, owned by Noranda Alumina LLC produced alumina mostly for use in aluminum smelters but also produced specialty alumina. An upgrade project at the Gramercy refinery to convert 200 kt/a (220,000 stpy) of capacity to produce more profitable specialty alumina was completed in the first half of 2018, and another project to increase capacity was started but a completion schedule was not available. The amount of new capacity was not disclosed, but it would be used to produce nonmetallurgical grade alumina. The 2.3-Mt/a (2.5 million-stpy) refinery in Point Comfort, TX, which was temporarily shut down in March 2016, remained closed throughout the year."

The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea contains major provisions that U.S. negotiators have sought for over two decades. The internationally recognized right to the mineral resources of a broad continental margin is of potentially enormous future importance to the United States. Although water depths reach 10,000 feet in some of the deeper areas of the margin, technology is rapidly making those depths economically accessible. In 1997, production in the Gulf of Mexico will reach a world record water depth of 5400 feet. Of perhaps even greater importance to the oil and gas industry is the broadly acknowledged right for tanker transport of oil to take place throughout all parts of the world's oceans.

Canada?s energy future will increasingly depend on a supply of light, sweet crude oil derived from the Athabasca oil sands deposit of North-eastern Alberta. Billions of dollars are being spent on the construction of new and expanded mine and bitumen extraction plants, in situ recovery facilities, pipelines, upgrading installations and all the infrastructure needed to support these projects. The success of the existing operators has also inspired new players, anxious for ?a piece of the action? to come forward with exciting project proposals of their own. None of this investment and spin-off economic activity would be taking place today if events had unfolded differently in this part of the world some one hundred million years ago. The accumulation of sand in rivers, estuaries and in the near-shore marine environment created the great reservoirs that host the enormous oil deposits these projects are designed to exploit. Mine operators of all stripes will likely agree that there are few good ?geological surprises?. With specific reference to oil sand deposits, the geological history determines the distribution of sand, silt and clay bodies, which in turn controls the ore grade. Important design factors including everything from stable pit slope angles to tailings properties reflects events that took place millions of years before. An understanding of the sequence of events that resulted in deposition and preservation of the sediment and oil are important to sound design for both mining and in situ facilities. A geological history of the region is described. Site-specific examples from Syncrude?s operating mines are used to illustrate some of the geological factors that can present design challenges.

This paper focuses on measures of the economic significance of mineral exploitation and processing activities, such as beneficiation, refining and smelting. Empirical measures are suggested to quantify the relevance of the degree processing within a nation's mineral industry. The most useful, based on the input-output econometric framework, are used to establish the magnitude of links between the mineral industry and its satellite activities and for the appraisal of large, non-marginal projects. The input-output impact analysis is refined to allow for country specific behaviour and synthetic indices for the appraisal of investments in the mineral sector are developed. These indices are further improved with the introduction of shadow prices to incorporate socio-economic issues. They are useful to direct mineral policy decisions and several investments towards the most promising objectives for national goals. Finally traditional methods for the appraisal of small scale, marginal, mineral projects are assessed where local impact and regional development issues are more relevant than national ones.

INTRODUCTION The global market for sulphur has experienced dramatic structural shifts during the past 10-15 years. After a number of years of dominance as sulphur suppliers, the world's Frasch producers were confronted with large increases in nondiscretionary sulphur production from sour crude oil and gas, while escalating energy and exploration costs reduced the economic incentives to replace dwindling sulphur reserves. Sulphur demand also experienced substantial growth, but the majority of this increase was filled by nondiscretionary production. The result was essentially flat demand for Frasch sulphur during this period. This paper briefly summarizes Freeport Sulphur Company's outlook for global supply and demand for sulphur through the year 2000, and examines in more detail the history and anticipated shifts in trade patterns. World trade in elemental sulphur (brimstone), despite year-to-year fluctuations, has been on an upward trend in recent years, and should continue to grow through the end of this century. The type (discretionary vs. nondiscretionary) and location of forecast sulphur supply sources has potentially broad implications for the world's Frasch producers, as they compete in a world market which is increasingly supplied by non-discretionary production. SULPHUR DEMAND Sulphur is a versatile and essential element used in a wide variety of manufacturing processes. Almost 90% of world sulphur consumption is in the form of sulphuric acid. The relatively low cost, ready availability, and physical and chemical properties of sulphuric acid make it the most economical acid for a number of chemical processes. Although sulphur is used in the manufacture of many products, the largest consumer by far is the phosphate fertilizer industry. The majority of sulphur demand growth over the past 30 years has occurred in this area, and today it accounts for nearly 65% of global sulphur consumption in all forms. Due to the relative importance of phosphate fertilizers, sulphur demand is typically discussed in terms of fertilizer and non-fertilizer (or industrial) uses, and this approach will be followed here. We at Freeport believe that global consumption of phosphate fertilizers should grow at an average annual rate of about 3.5% through the year 2000, which is roughly equal to the growth rate experienced during the past ten years. The basic assumption underlying this forecast is that world population will continue to grow significantly, while the total acres of cropland will grow only slightly. Therefore, in order to feed a growing population, higher crop yields will be necessary, which in turn will require the increasing use of fertilizers. This expected growth in phosphate consumption will, without doubt, fluctuate from year to year, and we Frasch producers have painful memories of the large dip in demand during 1982-83. However, we believe that the fundamentals for growth are very good, and that future demand will move back onto the historical trend line. In the recent recession the use of sulphur in the non-fertilizer or industrial sector dropped sharply, and it now appears that future growth will not return to the old trend line. Most of the non-fertilizer uses of sulphur and sulphuric acid involve older industries which are very mature, such as oil refining, steel, pulp and paper, pigments, etc. The use of sulphur in some of these industries is expected to exhibit little or possibly even negative

The design of the 12 m diameter SAG mill installed at the Cadia Hill Mine in New South Wales followed after two years of extensive laboratory and pilot plant testwork. The testwork showed the Cadia ores to be hard and competent necessitating the use of both a variable speed SAG mill drive and pebble crushing. The grinding power requirements for the SAG mill was based on engineering in-house grinding software, pilot plant data and simulations using JK SimMet software. Surveys of the SAG mill operation during the first four weeks showed the feed size distribution, transfer size and pebble rate to be lower or less than those for which it was designed. To compensate for the lower pebble rate, the SAG ball load was increased. This resulted in the total comminution circuit power being some 0.5 kWh/t higher than predicted. The JK SimMet SAG model has been modified to take account of these variations.

A comparison of gold, platinum and sulfide ion selective electrodes was made in this investigation for determination of Eh in solutions containing sulfide ions as a model system. The comparison was made in terms of the accuracy of the measured response, response time, pH dependence, and reproducibility of measurement. In addition, the sensitivity of each electrode towards changes in sulfide ion concentration was measured in terms of the change in measured Eh per decade change in concentration of sulfide ions. On the basis of a detailed investigation of the electrode processes occurring at the surface of gold and platinum electrodes, it was postulated that within the pH range investigated these electrodes respond to changes in the hydrosulfide ion, HS-, concentration in solution. In comparison, the sulfide ion selective electrode is known to respond to changes in the sulfide ion, S-, activity in solution. Although the potentials measured with gold and platinum electrodes were mixed potentials, pretreatment procedures can be used to obtain a signal suitable for process control. For control of sulfide ions in flotation pulps, the use of a gold electrode pretreated at 1.0 V with respect to a standard hydrogen electrode is recommended.

"Three issues of relevance in a modern tailings storage facility (TSF) are:geotechnical stabilitymanaging acid rock drainage (ARD) from pyritic tailingsmanaging the tailings from cyanidation of gold ores. Drawing on examples from both copper porphyry flotation and sulfide-hosted gold ores, this paper demonstrates that giving some weight and importance to the process tails properties upfront can influence the flow sheet and not only improve tailings management effectiveness but also impact positively on economics. In the case of a typical copper porphyry ore with moderate pyrite content, the rougher tail in a conventional high pH selective flotation step is usually classified as potentially acid generating (PAG). To avoid the generation of ARD within the tailings and the requirement for a costly plastic lining, subaqueous deposition is recommended, which in turn has negative implications for tailings stability, consolidation and closure. Adopting a neutral pH rougher stage rejects silicate gangue but recovers pyritic material to the cleaners for a subsequent selective flotation stage, often after regrinding. This effectively quarantines the PAG pyritic material in a much lower volume cleaner tail, which can then be appropriately encapsulated within a larger non-lined flotation tails facility. It also facilitates cyanide leaching of the cleaner tail for gold recovery, with the encapsulated tailings facility being suitable for cyanidation tails storage. A case study from Europe is examined. For gold ores where the gold is sulfide-hosted, but not refractory, a flotation route with cyanidation of the concentrate can similarly produce the majority of tailings as a benign flotation tail and again quarantine the low volume concentrate leach tail in a small encapsulated cell with appropriate residual cyanide management measures applied. Overall economics for intensive leaching of a low volume concentrate stream can also be surprisingly positive. A feasibility study design example of the process and TSF is presented. "Originally developed in 1993, LaModel has aided mining engineers and researchers alike in improving the design and safety of underground single- and multiple-seam mining operations (Heasley, 1998). Through the years (Heasley, 2011), the use and capabilities of the LaModel program have grown immensely while adapting to ground control concerns and problems within the mining industry. Presently, MSHA specifically mentions the use of LaModel for the analysis of, “complex non-typical roof control plans,” defined as either room-and-pillar retreat mining greater than 1000 feet, bump- or bounce-prone mines, or other criteria considered unusual by the District Manager (Stricklin, 2013).With an ever increasing number of users and an increase in available solution options and complex analyses, there is now a significant demand for better education and training in the practical application and detailed analysis using LaModel. This paper presents the development of an electronic user’s manual and comprehensive online training course created in an open online learning environment in order to better inform and train industry professionals as well as engineering students and new users. The development of both the user’s manual and online training course will ultimately increase the ground control design effectiveness of mining engineers, leading to safer and more productive mine designs.INTRODUCTIONOver the past 20 years, mining engineers and researchers have used the LaModel program for improving the design and safety of single- and multiple-seam mining operations. LaModel uses a laminated, displacement-discontinuity, boundary-element method which simplifies the overburden into a stack of frictionless homogeneous laminations and limits the detailed analysis to the seam itself. This approach is fundamentally simpler than either finite-element, finite-difference, or discrete-element approaches; and, therefore, the program provides a significant reduction in computational time and efficiently calculates the displacements, stresses, pillar safety factors, multiple-seam interactions, subsidence, etc. for thin-bedded deposits such as coal, salt, potash, limestone, etc. (Heasley and Salamon, 1996; Heasley and Agioutantis, 2001). The laminated overburden model in LaModel is different than previous homogeneous elastic formulations and more realistically represents the natural flexibilities of the stratified sedimentary overburden typically associated with coal seams (Heasley, 2008)."

A numerical model has been developed to study the air flow in the flow plate and gas diffusion layer assembly on the cathode side of a PEM fuel cell. The flow plate in this type of fuel cell often has serpentine channels and the porous layer is adjacent to the flow plate to diffuse the air to the catalyst layer. Flow cross-over of air through the porous diffusion layer from one part of the channel to another can occur. This flow cross¬over is a result of the pressure differences between different parts of the channel, and it causes the flow rate through the channel to vary with the distance along the channel. A numerical study of pressure distribution and flow cross-over through the gas diffusion layer (GDL) in PEMFC flow field using a serpentine channel system has therefore been undertaken to compare the cases of a single channel and two parallel channels, with the channels having a trapezoidal cross-sectional shape. The purpose of the present work was to study the effect of the flow plate geometry on the basic fluid flow through the plate. The flow here has been assumed to be three-dimensional, steady, incompressible, isothermal and single-phase. The flow through the porous diffusion layer has been described using the Darcy model. The dimensionless governing equations have been solved by using the commercial CFD solver, FIDAP. From the results obtained, it can be found that the single channel systems have greater maximum flow rate difference than the parallel channel systems under the conditions considered in the present study. Also, the size ratio R of trapezoidal cross-sectional shape has a significant effect on the flow cross-over and pressure variation in the flow field.

This chapter reports on recent modelling effects to analyze the US steam coal market with an econometric as well as a programming approach. The background to coal modelling is examined first. The particular aspects of the steam coal market to be modelled are then presented and the corresponding coal model described. Empirical results are presented and analyzed. Conclusions are then drawn regarding potential modelling applications in the policy area.

During the war the National Research Council at Ottawa sent out questionnaires to the managers of nearly all the industrial plants in Canada. Inquiry was made as to the research equipment possessed, the number of research workers employed and the nature of the research problems which still remained unsolved. Practically all the companies reported that they had no special facilities for research, had no re-search workers and did not require the assistance of the National Research Council-because they had no research problems. Perhaps we have here one of the chief reasons why certain of our manufacturers find themselves unable to meet foreign competition. For hundreds of years the Indian tribes of northern Chile worked, in a small way, the copper deposits at Chuquicamata. They had no research problems and made no striking success of their mining operations. Then came an American company with a research problem, which they proceeded to solve. To-day the stock of that company has a market value of about $140,000,000.

Slake durability of rocks is an important property of rock-mass and rock-materials in geotechnical practice. The slake durability of rocks is closely related to their mechanical properties. In this paper, mechanical properties and slake durability tests for weak and clay-bearing rocks from Beypazari Trona Bed in Ankara, were performed in order to assess the slake durability and mechanical properties (especially rock strength) of these rocks as well as to understand the relationship between mechanical properties and slake durability. In performing this relationship, statistical based correlation has been applied.

The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits allows us to isolate the circuit classification system efficiency (CSE) from the mill?s grinding performance. The factors which affect circuit CSE are reviewed, with emphasis on water usage at the classifiers. It is shown that manipulation of such water usage can be carried out to improve plant grinding circuit efficiency, at times by more than 30 percent.

Las especies minerales son los sujetos del quehacer metalúrgico -en tanto, el diseño, la optimización operativa y el monitoreo periódico de una planta de tratamiento requieren de un adecuado conocimiento de las características de los minerales involucrados. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala las particularidades de los minerales (tamaño de grano, composición porcentual y grado de liberación) y su determinación cuantitativa a través de técnicas que ostentan sofisticación, donde la primera característica no se determina mediante técnicas no microscópicas, mientras que las dos últimas son factibles de establecer mediante la microscopía óptica, utilizando la metodología desarrollada por uno de los autores. Dicha metodología es compatible con el entorno instrumental y tecnológico de la mediana y pequeña minería, aunque puede ser utilizada con igual beneficio por la gran minería. Asimismo se presenta dos ejemplos actuales de cómo la aplicación de estudios microscópicos al proceso metalúrgico que se utiliza en la mina Atacocha, un yacimiento polimetálico ubicado en los Andes centrales del Perú, se desarrolla exitosamente en la optimización del proceso.
