Evidence is produced below to show that the carbide "Mn,C," reported by Kw,and ersson' is really a mixture of two carbides. One is an Fe-Mn carbide which is probably isomorphous with hexagonal Mn15C4, reported by Bouchand and Pruchart.' The othev is a tetragonul Fe-Mn carbide with cell dzmensions close to those reported previously by the author3 for an Fe0.1Mno. carbide. IN a recent investigation several Fe-Mn carbide specimens, each weighing about 5 g, were prepared in a manner previously reported.3 Debye-Scherrer X-ray photographs were taken of at least two samples from different parts of each specimen using a 114.6-mm-diam camera. The exposure time was 2 hr using filtered chromium radiation, a tube voltage of 35 kv and a tube current of 10 ma. In the case of one specimen, which contained nominal weight percentages of iron, manganese, and carbon of 9.40, 84. 6,, and 6.0, respectively, duplicate chemical analyses indicated f1.2 and 5.5 wt pct C to be present in the two samples taken of the specimen: no graphitic carbon was detected. One powder-diffraction pattern of this specimen indicated the presence of the tetragons: carbide reported earlier,3 (a = 6.772A, c = 9.427A), plus cementite (O), plus an unknown structure. Two previous reports Lave been issued by the Bureau of Mines on consumption of oils and other reagents used to flotation - namely, "Statement of Flotation Oils," by O. C. Ralston, issued in 1913, and Serial No. 2203, "Consumption of Reagents Used in Flotation," by Thomas Varley, for the year 1919, issued in January, 1921.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between, the Coordinating Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (C.R.C.) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.-4/ Further reports have been issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to the summer of 1941 and during the winter of 1942-43 and the summer of 1943 5/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1,) 41-42 and during the summer of 1942. The present report presents analytical data for 1,356 samples, representing the products of approximately 103 companies. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines - and each group has been averaged separately. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 770 samples, 286 items, and 94 brands; premium-price, 537 samples, 236 items, and 72 brands; third-grade, 49 samples, 31 items, and 18 brands. The purpose of this study was to determine if miners were at risk from exposures to chemicals used in the mining industry and determine the nature and sources of the illnesses and injuries. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration?s (MSHA) employment and accident, injury and illness database was reviewed. There were 2,705 cases of chemical-related injuries and illnesses reported from 1999 through 2006, involving 66 different chemicals. The main source (cause) of chemical-related cases was acids/alkalis (about 39%). The primary nature (effect) of chemical-related cases was chemical burns (about 57%). The job classification where workers incurred the most chemical-related injuries and illnesses was cleaning plant operator/media operator/boney preparation plant operator/crusher worker (cleaning plant operators are responsible for maintenance of plants, media operators are responsible for handling reagents, boney preparation plant operators oversee removal of ?bone? from coal, and crusher workers use large crushers to break mined material). From 1999 through 2006, the rate of ?nonfatal days lost? and ?no days lost? (resulting from injuries) did not change significantly; however, the rate of illnesses decreased significantly. Chemical burns accounted for a large number of injuries; mining companies should carefully examine their personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, training methods and safety culture to ensure that their workers are protected.

Progress in computer control of flotation circuits has developed parallel with advances in reliability of on-stream X-ray analysis (Cooper, 1976). Attainment of acceptable results with X-ray fluorescence analysis over the past ten years has led to application of computer control in more than 30 concentrators. Gains in applying flotation control also have given incentive to improving measurement and control devices for other essential functions in control systems. At the same time, advancing technology has made available computer systems having characteristics practical and economical for the physical environments of concentrators and ore processing plants. Benefits from flotation control have centered on increased efficiency in mineral separations, derived by stabilizing circuit operation subject to changing ore characteristics. The gains have been most evident in processing complex ores for multiple concentrate products. In many cases, particularly when coupled with grinding control, the economic results from on-line control have been substantial compared to investments in monitoring and control equipment.

Commercial stress -relieved TD Nickel bar was shown to retain room- and elevated-temperature tensile strength after exposure up to 2501°F. Cold swaging increased both room -temperature and 2000°F tensile strength. After annealing at 2500°F the strengthening due to swaging was retained at 2000°F hilt eliminated at room temperature. Annealing produced changes in hardness and X-ray half peak width indicating the presence of recovery processes as 1071° as 1000°F but no recrystallization of swaged material was noted at any temperature. In contrast to swaging, rolling induced a recrystal-lized structure after annealing. The tensile strength of this recrystallized structure was comparable to the cold-worked condition. High-temperature tensile properties of as -received bar were highly anisotropic with the transverse tensile strength being one fifth the longitudinal value. The aniso-/ropy is affected by working direction and may he partially reversed by changing the direction of metal flow. The divergence in tensile strength, beginning above 550°F or- approximate one third the absolute melting point, is strain-rate dependent. T D Nickel is a commercial dispersion-hardened alloy containing 2 vol pct thoria. The dispersion, consisting of spherical particles 0.030 to 0.050 in diameter with an interparticle spacing of less than 1 is reported to maintain stable properties up to 2400°F.1 This stability of second phase results in maintenance of elevated-temperature strength at higher temperatures and longer times than normal nickel-base superalloys.2 The purpose of this paper is to describe the effect of various mechanical working operations on the strength and microstructural stability of TD Nickel bar. MATERIAL AND PROCEDURES All material used in this study was commercial TD Nickel bar. This material is produced by a chemical process which results in a nickel powder containing a dispersion of thoria particles. The powder is then pressed, sintered, extruded, and subsequently worked to bar stock. Three starting materials from three separate lots were used: as-extruded bar. 1-in.-diam stress-relieved bar, and 1/2-in.-diam stress-relieved bar. Since TD Nickel bar stock is cold-worked without a recrystalliza-tion anneal, the accumulated deformation or degree of cold work in these materials increases as the bar diameter decreases. Some of the 1/2-in.-diam bar was swaged to 1/4 in. diameter at room temperature in order to produce an as-worked condition for comparison with the stress-relieved stock. Tensile testing was performed on an Instron Tensile Tester at a constant crosshead speed of 0.020 in. per min. The 0.2 pct offset yield strength was measured from the load-crosshead movement plot. Specimen gage dimensions were 0.080 in. in diameter by 0.40 in. in length, producing a strain rate of approximately 0.050 min-1. Specimens were tested in air and heated within a resistance-wound furnace controlled to ±5°F. A 15-min soak at temperature was employed before testing. Samples were heat-treated in air and specimens machined after exposure with sufficient material removed to eliminate any surface contamination. X-ray line breadth was determined from a diffractometer scan of a transverse face of a bar using copper K, radiation. Metallographic preparation utilized standard mechanical polishing with Carapella's etch. Specimens for electron microscopy were electropolished in a 1:7 sulfuric/methaol solution and chromium-shadowed collodion replicas prepared. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION I) Effect of Elevated-Temperature Exposure on the properties of TD Nickel. The effect of various elevated-temperature exposures on the room-temperature tensile strength of TD Nickel is shown in Table I. In the unexposed condition the tensile strength, reduction in area, and hardness all increase with increasing accumulated deformation while the elongation decreases. After exposure at 2500°F the strength of all three materials decreases to about 65,000 psi and the elongations increase slightly. The apparent increase in strength of the 1-in. bar after a 2000°F treatment is probably experimental scatter. These results indicate that the room-temperature strengthening due to additional deformation is annealed out upon elevated-temperature exposure. In contrast to the room-temperature data, the 2000°F tensile strengths increase in order of increasing deformation even after exposure. Determination of the optimum production schedules over the life of a mine is a critical mechanism in open pit mine planning procedures. Long-term production scheduling is used to maximize the net present value of the project under technical, financial, and environmental constraints. Mathematical programming models are well suited for optimizing long-term production schedules of open pit mines. There are two approaches to solving long-term production problems: deterministic- and uncertainty- based approaches. Deterministic-based models are unable to deal with grade and geological uncertainties, which are two important sources of risk in mining industries. This may lead to discrepancies between actual production obtained by these algorithms and planning expectations. In this paper, a new binary integer programming model was developed for long-term production scheduling that incorporates geological uncertainty within the orebody. Then, traditional and uncertainty-based models are applied to an iron ore deposit. Results showed that the uncertainty-based approach yields more practical schedules than traditional approaches in terms of production targets.

For a number of years, from an economic standpoint, the ventilation of the Colorado mine of the Davis-Daly Copper Co. has been a difficult problem. The development through the main hoisting shaft was pursued for a number of years and to a depth of about 2500 ft.( 762 m.)before large bodies of good commercial ore were opened up. This lack of early success in exploration restricted expenditures for ventilation, with the result that the present orebodies were opened up at a depth of 2500 ft., and in country rock f relatively high temperature, without adequate means f supplying the development faces and the stopes with cool or fresh air of low humidity and suitable velocity. During the progress of development, two or three connections were made at higher levels with the workings of adjoining operations, but these were of a makeshift and unsatisfactory character and afforded no means for carrying downcast air from the surface, in anything approaching a direct course, to the working faces. During the latter part of 1917, arrangements were made with. the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., whereby, during the year 1918 and the early part f the year 1919, a crosscut was driven eastwards on the 2500-ft. level of the Colorado shaft and connection was made by means f an up-raise of approximately 200 ft. to a crosscut driven westwards from the 2800-ft. level of the Belmont mine, this crosscut at the top of the raise being driven at Davis-Daly expense by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. This connection, in conjunction with a No. 11 Sirocco fan installed near the Colorado shaft, provided the Colorado mine with a maximum of approximately 30,000 cu. ft. per min. of relatively fresh air, most of which came in a fairly direct route from the downcast Belmont shaft through the No. 11 fan to the 2500-ft. level stopes. After passing through these stopes and the stopes of overlying levels, it passed through the main crosscuts on higher levels back to the Colorado shaft, which provided the upcast for this current of air. High resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric data have been shown to optimize exploration for epithermal gold deposits in the vicinity of Charters Towers, northeastern Queensland. The radiometric data allow extrapolation of poorly outcropping geology to provide a cost-effective mapping technique, even at exploration scales (eg. 1:25,000). At a regional scale (eg. 1:100,000) the magnetic data reflect the regional tectonics and divide the area into domains for the application of different genetic models. For example: 1. the Ravenswood Batholith is characterized by multiple intrusions dating from Ordovician to Permian age. The polarity of the magnetic anomalies implies an age for the intrusions and indicates a deposit style for exploration. 2. extensional and wrench tectonics along the northern margin of the Drummond Basin are interpreted from the magnetic data and indicate favourable blocks for detailed exploration. Genetic exploration models may be tested in favourable environments by the recognition of geophysical signatures. These signatures reflect structural, lithological and alteration patterns arising from controls on ore deposits and can be applied at regional or detailed scales.

Occidental's in situ retorting process for oil shale has many advantages over the conventional, underground mine and surface retort. Only a portion of the oil shale is mined and transported outside where it blends with the oil-shale talus found in the area. Spent shale is retained underground without surface disposal problems. The process consumes no water from outside sources. Noise and dust levels are kept at a minimum. As many of the facilities as possible are located underground. More oil is produced from a given area than conventional surface processing. Additional energy can be recovered by using conventional turbines to generate electrical power of magnitude of three to four times required by the operation.

This investigation comprises the study of dislocation-oxygen interactions in a! titanium and its effect on the ductile to brittle transition in titanium. Internal friction techniques using a low-frequency lorsion pendulum were used to study the oxygen atom interactions with dislocations in "superpurity" titanium. A calculation of the interaction energy between an oxygen atom and a dislocation, based on the "breakaway" strain resulted in a value of 0.015 ev as compared to theoretical values of 0.022 and 0.035 ev for edge and screw dislocations, respectively. Both the saturation of the room temperature decrement and the transition from ductile to brittle behavior occurred at 1.5 at. pct 0. It was proposed that the embrittlement was due to oxygen atoms immobilizing the dislocations. It was possible to increase the ductility of the Ti-0 binary alloys by decreasing the oxygen pinning. The increase in uniform elongation was 30 pct for an increase in the preanneal temperature of 300°C. ThE room-temperature ductility of a titanium is significantly affected by interstitial solutes. Although oxygen has a solid solubility of 15.5 pct by weight, the room-temperature ductility extends only to 0.6 pct.' The ductility precipitously falls at this concentration and the fracture characteristics change from ductile to brittle.2 The small effective bulk composition of solute required to destroy the room-temperature ductility of the titanium must be indicative of an in-homogeneous distribution of solute atoms. (Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) ZINC is, as is well known, very brittle at a temperature of about 210° C. (410° F.), and may then be readily pulverized in a mortar. By sifting it may be obtained of uniform grain. I have been accustomed to prepare products passing through 40, 60, and 80-mesh sieves, and also by bolting through a fine handkerchief. The principal analytical uses to which I have hitherto applied this material are to the reduction of iron directly from the ore by heating it with the pulverized zinc, and the reduction of ferric to ferrous compounds in solution. In the first case the pulverized ore, 0.5 gram or less, is intimately mixed with about ten times its weight of the pulverized zinc (the finer the zinc the better), in a porcelain crucible, and this mixture is covered with about the same amount of zinc. The crucible is then heated at the top of the flame of a Bunsen burner, at a dull red heat, for about ten minutes. The crucible should not be covered. When cool, the crucible, with its contents, is placed in a flask treated with hot dilute sulphuric acid, and brought quickly to a boil. The zinc and reduced iron are dissolved in a few minutes and the flask is then tightly corked and allowed to cool. When cool, the iron is directly titrated by potassium permanganate.

Although the cyanidation process for gold leaching has been applied for more than a hundred years, some aspects of it, such as the passivation of the gold and the depassivating action of heavy metals, are still not well understood. In this work the anodic behaviour and surface composition of gold in alkaline aqueous cyanide with lead additions were investigated using polarization experiments and XPS. It was found that lead in the solution activated the gold at low concentrations, somewhat more positive than the reversible potential for gold, but that the activity again decreased at higher concentrations of lead. The potential range for the activation of the gold coincides with that where underpotential deposition of lead occurs, i.e. –200 to –600 mV(SCE), as indicated by the surface composition of the gold, shown in figure 1. Note that the concentration of lead on the surface of the gold only increased with time in the bulk plating potential range for lead, where gold is not activated by the presence of lead. It is also shown that up to 20 mg/L of lead added to the solution will activate the gold, provided that bulk plating of the lead is avoided. It is also important to avoid reducing conditions during leaching, where bulk plating of lead may occur, if the gold is to be activated by lead to achieve a high leaching rate, as the bulk plated lead screens the surface rather than activating it.

A detailed study of carrier flotation of kaolin clay using calcite showed the major beneficiation mechanism to be enhanced aggregation between anatase and calcite under intense agitation conditions. To develop an understanding of this selective aggregation, surface charge characteristics of kaolinite, anatase, and calcite were studied under simulated flotation conditions. Zeta potential of all these minerals tended towards a constant negative value in oleate solutions under certain conditions possibly due to adsorption or precipitation of oleate on them. However, whereas the zeta potential of anatase in the oleate solutions was not influenced by the agitation level, that of kaolinite was found to be strongly dependent on the agitation intensity. The effect of oleate on zeta potential of kaolinite was reduced by an increase in agitation intensity. It is suggested that oleate is much more firmly bound to the surface of the anatase and that this preferential attachment is responsible for the enhanced selective aggregation of the anatase with calcite. Agitation level plays a major role in carrier flotation since intense agitation is considered to enhance both the chemisorption of oleate on anatase and preferential detachment of calcium oleate precipitate from the kaolinite surface, all of this producing a large difference in the surface Properties of anatase and kaolinite, and hence in their tendency to aggregate with calcite.

A detail of the guide rollers is shown on Fig. I; and Fig. 2 shows a photograph of a guide roller that has been in service for several months on the haul-back cable. The former practice of supporting and guiding the haul-back cable on slusher hoists at Kimberly was accomplished by using the conventional type of snatch-block pulley, but it was found that an excessive amount of cable whipping and unreasonable wear on both rope and pulley resulted from this type of cable support. The guide, which is wholly made in the Corporation's shops, consists of two vertical and one horizontal roll assembled in a frame that is lagged to the cap timber in a slusher drift. In some slusher drifts more than one guide-roller assembly is used, depending upon the length of the drift. The installations usually are placed at 30-ft. intervals. We have found by actual experience that these rollers have increased the life of the haul-back cable approximately 200 per cent, as compared with the usage of the conventional sheave-block pulley. Cable Care The underground rigging crew and the slusher operators are trained in rope splicing. No cable clamps or knots are permitted on slusher cables and all cable "eyes" are spliced. The standard practice has been to use preformed cables of ?-in. diameter for haulage and ½-in. diameter for the haul back. The preformed cables have proved to be important factors for safety in use and speed in making splices. No external lubrication is used on the cables. It has been found that dry ropes have about 400 per cent longer life than those that were lubricated under these operating conditions. An accurate record is kept of all cable life and the tonnage moved by the slushers in each working place, and if the rope wear is excessive in any particular working place, an investigation is made to determine the reason. Wire-rope Sling for Snatch-block Anchor The rope sling is shown by Figs. 3 and 4. These slings support the snatch-block pulley for the haul-back rope. The standard practice at Kimberly is to use a roller-bearing snatch-block pulley 10 in. in diameter. The snatch-block housings are equipped with a clevis attachment in preference to swivel hooks, as it has been found that the more rigid clevis keeps the cable in better alignment. The snatch blocks are hung from the cable sling, which is wrapped around the posts of the drift sets as shown on Fig. 3. This method of anchoring the pulley provides better anchorage and flexibility than those of the rigid or spring-mounted types. When the slusher-drift headings are being advanced, the snatch blocks are hung from a "gin" pole ahead of the last set of timbers' An employee is assigned on each production shift to take care of the lubrication of all slusher hoists that are being used and he is provided with tools for minor repairs.

"Fine-grained hematite ore can be concentrated by the process of selective flocculation and dispersion, which relies on proper reagent selection and control of water chemistry. While many previous studies have been performed analyzing the effects of different reagents on this process in a laboratory environment, this paper focuses on investigating the water chemistry within the process in a pilot-scale continuous deslime thickener.The pH, sodium concentration, calcium concentration and magnesium concentration were varied to determine their effects on the iron concentrate grade and recovery, and the phosphorus concentrate grade and rejection in the pilotscale selective deslime thickener. The ideal pH for the iron grade and recovery of the process using a starch selective flocculant was found to be 10.5. Phosphorus rejection, however, was increased at lower pH values. Minimization of sodium concentration was shown to improve iron grade, iron recovery and phosphorus rejection. Calcium acted as a nonselective flocculant showing higher iron recovery, lower iron grade and lower phosphorus rejection with increasing concentration. Conclusions could not be drawn from the experiments that varied magnesium concentration.The zeta potential of the solid-liquid interface of particles in each sample taken was also analyzed to show relationships between zeta potential and process performance. In all cases, a maximization of the magnitude of zeta potential correlated with increased iron grade and recovery. This supports the hypothesis that a higher level of dispersion enhances the selective flocculation and separation process.IntroductionThe United States produced 53.2 million metric tons out of the 3,000 million metric tons of concentrated iron ore produced worldwide in 2012 (Tuck, 2013). With this in mind, there has been a large increase in iron ore processing research (Bolen, 2014; Carlson and Kawatra, 2008, 2013; Halt and Kawatra, 2014; Halt et al., 2014; Haselhuhn et al., 2012a,b, 2013a,b; Liu et al., 2014; Manouchehri, 2014; Sandvik and Larsen, 2014; Semberg et al., 2014). Of the 53.2 million metric tons produced, roughly 8 million metric tons of hematite (Fe2O3) concentrate were produced using a process known as selective flocculation and dispersion (Cliffs Natural Resources, 2011). This process is the only economically viable method for concentrating low grade (< 40% Fe) fine grain (< 25µm liberation size) hematite ores. It is scarcely used due to difficulty in controlling the surface chemistry of the ore and high reagent costs (Department of Energy, 2001; Haselhuhn et al., 2013a). The process is highly dependent upon both reagent selection and precise control of the water chemistry during separation. This study shows the dependence of the process performance of a pilot-scale deslime thickener on the water chemistry in the feed slurry."

Currently, mine plans are optimised by using several criteria as objective functions, like profit, life-of-mine, concentration of some pollutants, mining costs, confidence level or ore resources, with consideration of constraints related to production rates, plant capacities and grades. Whilst this approach is successful in terms of producing high value production schedules, it uses a static opening sequence of the drawpoints and therefore the optimisation is made within the level of freedom left by the original opening schedule, and as a result it is far from the true optimal value of the project. This paper presents a model to optimise the sequence of drawpoint opening over a given time horizon. The emphasis is in the precedence constraints that are required to produce meaningful operational sequences considering the exploitation method (panel or block caving), physics considerations and logical rules. Further on, while it applies the standard approach of maximising net present value (NPV), it considers other targets for optimisation, like the robustness and constructability of the plans. Finally, it applies the model to real data to obtain feasible plans by means of this model. The first tests were done varying the production capacity of the mine.

The most extensively used methods and approaches for characterizing and selecting frothers for plant application are based on measurements in clean water in the absence of solids and without consideration of physicochemical factors that are known to influence the properties and behavior of practical flotation froths, and hence metallurgical performance. These factors include aquatic chemistry, collectors, modifiers, particle shape and size, and pH. Understanding interactions between these factors and the role and relevance that they play in characterizing frothers and froth zone properties will greatly aid in the frother selection and evaluation process. Such an understanding will also greatly enhance the ability to create frother solutions that are sufficiently robust to plant variability (such as mineralogical, comminution, operational, physical and chemical). This paper reports results of a “systems approach” study designed to probe ways in which physicochemical factors a) influence frothing and bubble size in 2- and 3-phase systems, and b) confound correlation of fundamental measurements with flotation outcome. The concepts and insights gleaned from fundamental frother studies, together with empirical laboratory flotation tests and a thorough understanding of plant needs and challenges were used to develop and implement customized frother formulation at a Cu-Mo flotation plant. Plant metallurgical data and qualitative assessment of froth zone properties showed that a frother formulation developed using the approach described here provided marked improvements in froth characteristics (mineralization, mobility, stability, persistence). These improvements resulted in better circuit control and significant performance advantages, such as improved coarse particle recovery, without detrimental downstream effects. INTRODUCTION Successful recovery of value minerals of sufficient grade via the flotation process requires selective manipulation of the value minerals to render them hydrophobic using collectors and modifiers. The hydrophobized minerals then attach to air bubbles and the mineral-bubble aggregates are selectively transported through the froth zone into the launder. Frothers play a critical role in froth formation and more importantly in achieving and maintaining desirable froth characteristics (for example, stability, mobility, persistence) that are essential in facilitating the selective transport and recovery of value minerals. Fundamentally, frothers contribute to the transient stability of thin liquid films and so aid in reducing bubble coalescence rates in the pulp and froth zones, thus maintaining the small bubbles required for efficient bubble-particle attachment. Invariably, the action of frothers at the liquid/gas interface in the pulp and froth zones impacts bubble stability, water and solids transport to the froth, which in turn impacts froth mobility, froth carrying capacity, and the concentrate grade. Consequently, selection and evaluation of frothers for flotation plants requires careful consideration of the frother type, though the choice is limited to only two main classes of compounds in terms of fundamental chemistry (short chain alcohols and polyglycols). Even with the selection of what is thought to be the best frother for a given application, practical knowledge of the froth zone and experience in controlling its properties is essential for maximizing metallurgical performance.

El presente texto señala los aspectos propios de la demasía como concesión minera, prescindiendo de aquellos otros que son comunes a toda clase de concesiones mineras. La demasía se entiende como una concesión que ocupa el área libre existente entre los linderos de dos o más concesiones cuando esta área no permite la conformación de una hectárea. La determinación de su extensión relaciona la colindancia con las concesiones que forman la demasía. Los desplazamientos de las concesiones limítrofes después de delimitada la demasía benefician a ésta siempre que no resulte limite con una concesión que originalmente no era colindante.
