"In our laboratory several impactors have been developed in the past which have penetration characteristics that approximate that of the ACGIH or the British MRC respirable curves. In these impactors the large nonrespirable particles are collected on an impaction plate of a multiple round nozzle stage where the nozzles are of different diameters. The principle for designing a respirable cut impactor is quite simple in that the respirable curve is divided into two or more segments and the nozzles are designed with the correct diameters and number of nozzles to have collection characteristics with 50% cutpoints at the center of each segment. The particles not collected on the impaction plates are then collected upon a filter. These particles represent the respirable fraction of the aerosol. Therefore the respirable curve is approximated in a stepwise fashion with the approximation becoming better as the respirable curve is divided up into increasing numbers of segments. It has generally been felt that three segments is satisfactory for most cases.A new version of the respirable impactor has recently been developed in our laboratory. This impactor approximates the ACGIH respirable curve in three steps at a flow rate of 30 liters per minute. However, unlike previous models where all of the particles larger than the three cut points designated by the three steps are collected upon one impaction plate, a separate impaction plate is now used for each of the three cut sizes. To approximate the respirable curve in three steps, the cut sizes must be 2.2, 3.5 and 5.8 microns diameter. Therefore, on each of these stages the particles collected will be the mass of particles that are larger than these three cut sizes. By determining the mass of particles collected on each of these three stages plus that on the after filter using Gravimetric techniques, some information can be obtained on the size distribution of the aerosol being sampled. Furthermore, the impaction plates of the three stages are rotated and the nozzles are placed in such a position such that a uniform deposit is obtained on each of the impaction plates. Therefore, the deposits collected are suitable for X-ray fluorescence analysis or other types of analysis where a uniform deposit is required."

"The Port Mann Main Water Supply Tunnel involves a 1km long tunnel beneath the Fraser River from Surrey to Coquitlam, BC. At depths of up to 60 m below ground, the earth pressure reached 6 bar. The tunnel is constructed using an EPB TBM and gasketed precast concrete segmental liner. The tunnel and two shafts were constructed in a variety of soil conditions ranging from soft to stiff clays and silts, to compact to very dense sands and gravels. After approximately 800m of mining, a very dense and highly variable soil group consisting of cobbles and boulders halted the TBM. Several options were considered to stabilize the TBM face so an intervention could be conducted. Although de-watering was considered, there was risk of settlement to the Port Mann bridge piers, which was within 500m of the tunnel. Hyperbarics were also considered, however, the cost, schedule and uncertainty of the work that needed to be done, made it a risky option. Ground freezing by Liquid Nitrogen was chosen as the best solution, which would provide a frozen block around the face of the TBM. A temporary platform on the river was designed and constructed to enable drilling and installation of the freezing pipes and temperature monitoring equipment. The operation required close coordination among the tunnelling, marine and freezing sectors. Following the intervention, the TBM successfully broke through the reception shaft, and the remaining project was completed. This paper describes the design, construction and operational approaches used for the freezing and serves as a basis for future projects requiring expedited ground freezing."

Small buttons of fused tantalum have been produced by are fusion in a vacuum, by drawing an arc between sticks of pressed tantalum and a tantalum-faced water-cooled copper block. However, ingots of appreciable size can be produced only by the heat-treatment of bars pressed from powder. The following outline covering the production of finished bars of tantalum by the methods of powder metallurgy is also used for the production of columbium, taking into account the difference in the melting points of these two metals. Pressing the Powder With possibly a few exceptions, a pressing operation is one of the essential steps in the practice of powder metallurgy. In fact, the author's experience with a number of high-melting-point metals and with numerous types of hard carbide compositions has led him to believe that this operation is often one of the most important in the entire process, and frequently one of the most difficult to carry out in a satisfactory manner. Defects due to improper pressing can readily lead to a defective finished product. It is the author's opinion that rarely is a bar or other article pressed from metal powder in such a way that all parts of the piece are uniformly pressed. The nearest approach to uniformity of pressing is possibly attained when the powder is contained in a flexible receptacle, such as rubber, and is pressed under a liquid by hydrostatic pressure. However, this method is not generally applicable. Hydraulic pressing in steel dies where one or two punches are forced into the die must usually be resorted to. As the pressure in such a die is built up, the powder begins to cling to the walls of the die with a tenacity dependent upon the nature of the powder, and this results in a bridging action, so that the layers of powder adjacent to the moving punch are pressed more heavily than those further removed in the mass. Frequently, as the pressure is carried higher, there may be a mass slippage of the powder upon itself, with the result that slip cracks are formed within the pressed

Various light sources were evaluated for use in a fiber optic lighting system for mining machines. It was determined that a metal halide arc lamp was best because of its resistance to damage from shock and vibration and the high luminance of the arc. Measurements were made of the percent transmission of the ½ inch thick glass window and the fiber bundles, the total lumen output of the diffuser assembly with a known input and of the average surface luminance of the diffuser assembly. These data were then used to calculate the theoretical output of the system given an estimated input from the source. A prototype 55 watt, single-ended metal halide source was then developed. In order to provide greater efficacy and higher throughput through the fiber optic cables, a variation of the lamp with thallium iodide added to the fill was developed. The lamp was modified and a ballast was developed to allow it to hot restrike.

The Farlin Creek study area encompasses 610 acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management in Beaverhead County, Montana. A mineral survey was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey in 1984. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed literature and county mining records, and examined prospects or mineralized areas to determine its mineral potential. Geological Survey personnel evaluated the area by geochemical sampling and geophysical surveys. The study area is included in the Mount Baldy mining district. Nearby mineralized Quartz veins or tactite bodies apparently do not extend into or exist within the study area. No significant gold or economic detrital minerals were found in samples from streams draining the area. All of the study area is leased for oil and gas.

Cable supports offer several advantages over traditional secondary support methods by enhancing stress redistribution to pillars and gob areas, minimizing or eliminating timbers and cribs that reduce ventilation, eradicating material-handling injuries related to placement of crib supports, and providing a cost-effective alternative to secondary support. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), researching alternatives to traditional roof support methods, designed and installed high-strength cable supports to improve the stability of longwall gate road entries in a western U.S. coal mine. With the cooperation of industry, methods were developed to install and evaluate cable supports in a tailgate area using traditional resin cartridges. The cable-bolted areas successfully maintained roof support throughout the developed entries. Cable supports have replaced wood cribbing as secondary support in the bleeder entry system and have minimized or eliminated the use of cribbing in the longwall tailgate entries. This paper describes the theory, application, and advantages of cable supports and presents some mine measurements made to assess the cable performance during the retreat process of longwall mining.

The potential for using heterotrophic microorganisms to solubilize manganese from low-grade domestic ores is being assessed at the Reno Research. center, U.S. Bureau of Mines. More than 90 pct of the manganese has been extracted from a variety of oxide ores in shake-flask tests using molasses as a source of .. nutrients for the microorganisms. It has also been demonstrated that high recoveries of manganese can be obtained from a domestic wad ore using column bioleaching. 'l'he isolation and identification of organisms responsible for manganese extraction is discussed, as are the mechanisms responsible for manganese solubilization.

In the fall of 1988, The Cannon mine decided to investigate a central blasting system based on conventional electric blasting detonators being used to initiate rounds primed with Nonel detonators. The advantages of this hybrid detonator system were viewed as being safety and cost effectiveness. A study was done reviewing the safety aspects of utilizing a permanent blasting line installed throughout the main haulage drifts to a central blasting station located at the mine portal. The study addressed the following potential safety hazards: radio frequency induced current, stray current from both electrical utilities and transmission lines, galvanic and electrostatic sources of extraneous current.

Due to variation in the geological natures of underground coal mines, especially when the entry?s roof/floor are soft and weak, it is vital to select an appropriate roof bolting system to ensure entry stability, coal production, and miner?s safety. No single type of roof bolting system perfectly fits for various types of openings, even within a mine. From the results of continuous research on roof bolting in the past 10 years, the authors used a novel concept of ?Self-screwed? mechanism to develop five types of roof bolting under a patented Self-screwed Tube Bolting System (STBS)©. This roof tube bolting system can be applied to meet different timing-strength requirements under varying mining conditions to increases the stability of mine workings. This paper outlines the structures and mechanisms of the five types of self-screwed roof bolting systems along with their unique characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, and limitations. Two case studies using a Self-screwed Tube Drilling Bolting (STDB)©, one of the five types of roof tube bolting systems, show the principles of mechanics, suitability and parameters for a mine entry and a subway?s construction/ supports in the surrounding soil layers and soft sands, respectively are presented. The results confirmed the time dependent anchorage capacity between predictions and on-site measurements. Currently, other types of the self-screwed tube bolting systems are also being applied to different coal mines in China to increase entry stability and meet safety requirements.

DURING the last ten years, in the effort to save manpower and costs, methods of drilling and blasting in Sweden have changed and developed in a revolutionary manner. These developments have been accompanied by extensive alterations in methods of tunneling and in mining technique. Since the end of the 1940's there has been a 100 pct change-over in Sweden to the use of tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. Both investigations and practical results have shown clearly that a tungsten carbide chisel bit fastened directly on the drill steel is the most economical for Swedish conditions. This applies to drill steel up to the longest size it is practical to handle. In terms of drilling footage, durability of the drill steel and the tungsten carbide bit is generally the same. In this respect, therefore, a detachable bit offers no advantage over integral steel. Transportation of integral steel to the grinding plant, instead of detachable bits only, involves heavier work, but this is counteracted by placing grinding plants closer together or by grinding at the working place itself. The drilling rate with integral steel is higher, the trouble of changing bits is avoided, and the difficulties which always arise with joints are eliminated. At present steel dimensions are usually 7/8 in. with a shank 41/4 in. long, whereas the international standard shank was formerly 31/4 in. The longer shank renders possible a better guide control of the steel and consequently longer life for the rotation chuck and the water-flushing pipe. After extensive experiments and investigations, agreement has been reached in Sweden on certain series of standards, shown in Table I. Other steel dimensions are, of course, available for special purposes. The standard drill-steel set begins with a 34-mm diam and has a length interval of 2 2/3 ft. On the other hand, for ordinary drifting it has been proved more economical to use greater length intervals on the steel, so only one steel change is required for a 61/2-ft round. Moreover, owing to the relatively close hole spacing necessary in a drift round, it has been possible to reduce the diameters of the tungsten carbide bits. This results in faster and cheaper drilling. As shown by the table, the lengths of drill steels for normal drifting are 33/4 ft and 71/2 ft, with 29 and 28-mm diam bits. During the last few years operators have begun to use 3/4-in. drill steel in place of the 7/8-in. drill steel chiefly employed earlier. As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical purposes depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, Be well as the amount of available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. The selection of coal beds in Harlan County, Ky., for coking tests was based, in part, on recent studies of coal reserves by Wallace,3/ who estimated the recoverable reserves in beds 28 inches or more thick, in tons, as follows:

The recently completed major modifications and additions to Reserve Mining Company's taconite concentrating process incorporate a totally new control system. Design of the new control scheme is centered on reliability, versatility, centralization, and optimization. The design objectives were achieved through a distributed control system based on a network of independent field located micro-processor based control systems connected to a central control room. Operation of each micro-processor can be interrogated and modified from the central control room by the operator or by either of two computer systems. The two computer systems handle logging, alarming, specialized sequenced controls, and complex process optimization routines.

"Laser assisted chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) is a new containerless fiber process whereby growth of small diameter fibers or microstructures (microsprings, microsolenoids) occurs directly from the vapor phase. The laser beam has a focal point adjusted to coincide with the tip of the growing fiber inside the reaction chamber. Since the growing fiber is not in contact with reactor walls or foreign materials, it is chemically pure, and suitable for optical uses and uses requiring high structural uniformity. Continuous fibers and multifilament yams are possible. The use -of high reaction chamber pressures (1-10 bar) and a small wavelength Nd-YAG laser made it possible to fabricate small diameter fibers at growth rates >1 mm/s. Support of excavation (SOE) design practice tends to model SOE elements using two-dimensional (2D) analyses to avoid the complexity associated with three-dimensional (3D) analyses. Such practice overlooks soil arching in the horizontal plane and prevents designers from accounting for elements such as capping beams as part of the statical system. This study simulates square excavations supported by cantilever slurry walls in dry cohesionless soil using 2D and 3D finite element (FE) models. First, side support wall behavior is compared from 2D and 3D FE models for variable excavation length to depth (L/H) ratios. Second, the effect of slurry wall lateral bending stiffness on wall behavior is studied by modeling the wall using plate element with isotropic and anisotropic wall stiffness. Finally, the sensitivity of cantilever wall behavior to the presence of capping beam is illustrated. The study concludes that unbraced excavations with L/H ratios greater than 5 almost resemble plane-strain conditions. Slurry walls are better simulated in 3D FE models by dividing the plate element into discrete panels or by assigning anisotropic bending stiffness to the plate element. Finally, the presence of capping beam affects the behavior of cantilever walls resulting in reduction of deflections and redistribution of bending moments. INTRODCUTION Support of excavation (SOE) design practice ranges in complexity from conducting simple hand calculations to performing three dimensional numerical modeling depending on several factors among which is the geometry of the design problem. This paper addresses walls that are designed using numerical modeling, and discusses the factors governing the choice of the most suitable modeling approach. It has been believed for a while that modeling excavations using 2D numerical models would lead to a more conservative solution, which turned out to be incorrect in specific cases. This paper attempts to describe cases where 2D finite element modeling could be on the conservative side and other cases where it could be less conservative than the more complex 3D modeling.

Demand for arsenic trioxide increased markedly during 1984 as a result of increased use of arsenical wood preservatives and increased use of arsenicals in agriculture. The increase in agricultural demand was due to a return to production of land with-held from cotton planting under an agriculture program for acreage diversion for some 1983 crops. Supplies of arsenic trioxide were more than adequate to meet increased demand, and prices either declined from, or remained at, the low 1983 levels. In June, ASARCO Incorporated announced plans to close its Tacoma, WA, smelter by mid-1985. Domestic Data Coverage.-Refined arsenic trioxide was produced by two U.S. companies. The major producer voluntarily reported its production to the Bureau of Mines, but to prevent disclosure of proprietary data, the production data have been withheld.

"Falls of ground pose costly hazards to personnel and equipment and thus measures should be taken to prevent them. This study endeavours to improve the support systems used in geotechnically poor ground at a Zimbabwean platinum mine by analysing the status quo and recommending an effective support system. Various techniques were used to determine the quality of ground conditions, predict the rock mass behaviour, and to identify the appropriate rockbolt type. An analysis of the current ground control methods and their limitations was also undertaken.The results showed that the current support system and mining practices in poor ground need to be modified to improve safety and productivity. Stoping overbreak is influenced by poor ground conditions and the explosives currently used. The use of emulsion is recommended to replace ANFO. Redesigning of pillars is also recommended in poor ground conditions. An evaluation of the current roofbolt system indicated an opportunity for improvement. With new insight on the performance of the shorter length roofbolts currently in use, a new support system was recommended taking into consideration cost-benefit analysis. Barring down using pinch bars in poor ground was seen as a risky and time-consuming exercise, hence the use of mechanical scalers is recommended to achieve zero harm and to meet production targets. Smoothwall blasting is recommended in poor ground to minimize excavation damage. Other recommendations include the use of hydrological surveys to determine groundwater levels and implement corrective measures. Both empirical and numerical modelling approaches need to be utilized in determining the optimum support. IntroductionThe presence of geological discontinuities such as faults and joints weakens the rock mass. Adequate support is critical in achieving zero harm in underground mines. This paper reviews the current support systems used in poor ground conditions at a Zimbabwean platinum mine. The area of research is located on the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe. The mine exploits platinum group elements (PGEs) and base metals. It is shallow, having a maximum depth of less than 300 m. The Great Dyke is the second largest reserve of PGEs, following the South African Bushveld Complex (Oberthur et al., 2012). It is a linear layered intrusion that extends for about 550 km with a maximum width of 11 km (Prendergast, 1989). The generalized section of the Great Dyke is almost like a trumpet, comprising layers that dip towards the centre. The reef exploited at the mine, the Mineralised Sulphide Zone (MSZ), is located in the pyroxenite layer, which is hosted in the ultramafic sequence. The MSZ is a uniform layer about 2– 3.5 m thick, dipping at around 10–14° from surface outcrop towards the axis of the basin, and located between bronzite and websterite horizons. The visible disseminated sulphide mineralization shows a typical and consistent vertical distribution of platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal values. The research was undertaken to review the current support systems used in geotechnically poor ground conditions in a bid to improve both safety and productivity."

Four different high density sludge-type processes, Cominco HDS, Geco HDS, Tetra HDS Process and the Staged- neutralization process were studied for their effectiveness in treating a low strength Zn-Fe rich acidic drainage solution. Each proms was run continuously for at least two weeks after obtaining steady state conditions. The final effluent quality, lime consumption, sludge density, settleability, filterability, viscosity, neutralization potential, metal leachability, operating and capital costs were measured and evaluated for each process.

In January, 1969, the Central Research Division of Continental Oil Company initiated a research program on roof control. The purpose of the research was to improve roof stability. Toward this end, it was necessary to determine which of the many geological and geometrical variables have a significant effect on roof stability. The isolation of these significant variables would allow research effort to be concentrated where it would be most effective in improving roof control. The research effort was directed toward two major objectives. One was to de-fine the geological and/or geometrical parameters that affect the severity of roof conditions in any particular area of the mine. This study was concerned with roof fall intensity. The second was to define why roof falls in Humphrey No. mine (and in northern West Virginia-south-western Pennsylvania coal mining areas) are oriented so that they occur primarily in north-south rooms or entries. This study was concerned with roof fall orientation. To provide a reference framework for further discussion, a geological description of the area is presented in Part II. In Parts III and IV, the procedures, methods, and 'results of the research applied toward the afore-mentioned major objectives are presented. Part V contains the conclusions and recommendations for-warded by this study.

The goal of the drill bit consumption study was to develop an equation(s) based on various components that affect bit drill wear and use the equation(s) to estimate the consumption of bits during production drilling. Drill bit data from various geographic locations were compiled and used to develop linear regression equations using the Microsoft Excel Software. Multiple drill bit consumption equations were developed and statistical analysis was used to verify the accuracy of those equations. The equations will allow mining companies to more accurately forecast drill bit consumption when evaluating new mine properties. This capability becomes increasingly beneficial to forecasting as the cost of consumables increases.

This paper is the third of a series recording the results of tests made at various quarries throughout the United States to determine (1) the relation between the size gradation of feed to, and product from, primary crushers, (2) the particle shape of the crushed. product, (3) the differences in gradation and particle shape produced by different types of primary crushers, and (4) the differences in gradation and particle shape caused by crushing different kinds of stone. Progress reports 1 and 2 dealt with comparisons of different types of crushers crushing the same type of stone. This report deals with relation¬ship between feed and product of two different limestones, as to size distribution and particle shape, when crashed in the same crusher.
