Are the results of an exploration program worth the cost? This is a question I suspect many of you are familiar with and, theoretically at least, it is an easy question to answer. The answer, of course, lies in comparing the future earnings stream the program is expected to generate, to the present value of the cost of carrying it out. While historical costs can be determined without much difficulty, estimating the value of a future earnings stream involves all sorts of assumptions regarding future costs, metal prices, inflation rates and an appropriate discount factor; and in the context in which the question arises, requires additional assumptions about mineral deposits which have yet to be discovered. As a practical matter, this kind of approach isn't likely to produce a very convincing answer; certainly not one convincing enough to satisfy a skeptical audience; nor one likely to temper the illusions of recent converts to mineral exploration, who are convinced that if enough money is spent, profitable discoveries will inevitably follow. Within broad limits, however, I believe it is possible to analyze the costs and results of gold exploration in the U.S.A. over the past 20 odd years in a useful manner. And while such an analysis is imperfect, it will provide some insight into this fascinating subject.

The calculation of the liberation spectrum in the product from continuous milling operations is a problem of considerable importance and is difficult to solve because the population balance equation must be integrated in two-dimensional space. Complete solutions require the estimation of a large number of parameters unless a structural model of the ore texture can be used. A very simplified textural model based on the use of the modified Andrews-Mika diagram and the PARGEN simulation of multi-phase particles has been formulated and is used to simulate the behavior of a continuously operating laboratory ball mill. A sensitivity analysis for this mill has been done to show the likely effect of model approximations on the predicted liberation spectrum which will be measured.

San Francisco, CA will host about 1,500 tunneling and underground construction professionals from around the world during the biannual Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), June 19-22. These professionals are gathering in a city that has seen much under-ground work throughout its history. And, today, the San Francisco region has more than $4.6-billion in tunneling projects under way. The RETC will include three-and-a-half days of technical programming, complete with proceedings, two short courses, two field trips and a host of social activities. In addition, the accompanying exhibit has attracted 127 exhibitors in 152 booths, an RETC record. The following is a brief list of activities that will take place during the conference. The tailings are waste from mineral processing operations. The type of tailings of iron ore processing are classified into sandy tailings and mud. Already the overburden are showing significant levels of useful mineral. Both iron ore`s waste have in your composition phyllosilicates/clay that indicates the potential for use in niche markets as paving and cement. According to several studies, there are various technologies in bench and pilot levels that could be used on a large scale but there is not an economic environment, tax, regulatory and tax set. Many of these technologies are associated with the reuse of tailings and overburden in construction. All these factors influence for that so many initiatives remain in search formats and cannot advance to the new business format. There is no way to set goals of reuse of this waste, as already occurs in China, if there is not a fiscal, tax and economic structure to support such measures. The way to foster and ensure that reuse of tailings and overburden is an incentive for promoting a culture of circular economy that would allow the emergence of an ecosystem between the private, public and Government sectors with the objective of accelerating and subsidize the entire network of reuse of this waste. The closure of the mine could be the tool used to ensure and boost this ecosystem of reutilization to align it with the vocation of the area of the mining law. Following this model, the end of the mining activity could provide a financial return to the local population, a more effective environmental compensation and a reduction in costs related to the closure of the mine. Tests were carried out in a Hallimond microflotation cell and a Denver D12 cell on typical residue material from a gold mine in the Orange Free State (South Africa), in which 50 per cent of the kerogen was larger than 100 µm in size. Although kerogen is naturally hydrophobic, the observed unexpectedly poor flotation reponse may be due to occlusion of the kerogen by a slime coating and subsequent depression of the slime by guar gums. The recovery of gold from samples spiked with kerogen increased, with no significant reduction in grades, when a petroleum-based collector and tetrasodiumpyrophosphate (a dispersant) were used.

Low temperature and high-temperature calorimetric measurements were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines on high-purity samples of Re02(s) and Re03(s) to determine heat capacities and enthalpies. The temperature range of heat capacity measurements was 5 to 310 K for Re02 and 8 to 309 K for Re03. High-temperature enthalpy measurements alone were determined for pure Re207(s,1). The derived standard entropies are S°298 = 11.43±0.01 cal/deg mole for Re02(s) and S298 = 16.55±0.02 cal/deg mole for Re03(s). High-temperature enthalpy equations expressed in calories per mole are as follows: Re02 (s) , H-H298.15 = 16.002T + 1.600 X 10-3T2 + 3.522 X 105T-1 - 6,095 (298 to 1,400 K); Re03 (s) , H-H298.15 = 20.293T + 3.238 X 10-3T2 + 3.950 X 105 T-1 - 7,664 (298 to 1,000 K); Re207 (s) , H-H298.15 = 38.437T + 10.309 X 10-3T2 + 4.315 X 105 T-1 - 13,824 (298 to 413 K); Re207 (s) , H-H298.15 = 30.181 + 17.713 X 10-3T2 - 10,612 (413 to 600 K) ; Re207 (1) , H-H298.19 = 66.101T - 10,092 (600 to 700 K). Gibbs energy of formation (?Gf°) data and related functions over the temperature ranges investigated are tabulated for the three oxides.

The gases transportation and adsorption in the coal are greatly dependent on the pore-crack parameters, such as the porosity, the pore distribution, as well as the number and size of the pores. What?s more, the pore parameters of the coal are always changing with the temperature. However, the pore characteristics and their changes are extremely difficult to quantify. In this case, Fractal Theory provides a good tool to address this issue. Based on this theory, the pore distribution coupled with the size of the pores can be quantitatively described. In this paper, the equation used to calculate the Fractal Dimension of coal pores was deduced and Mercury Porosimetry was employed to test the pores distributions of coal samples at different temperature. The experimental data excellently verified the Fractal characteristics of coal pores. In addition, the experiments also indicate that the Fractal Dimension of the coal pores linearly increases with the temperature.

Every new mining district has had its own peculiar experiences in inventing and experimenting upon new methods for the various operations of mining, and more particularly in the processes of crushing and dressing ores. As a matter of course, during this period many old things have been reinvented, patented, and cast aside, there to remain until at a future day other geniuses shall bring them forth again as new. In this respect the Copper Region of Michigan has not been behind other mining centres, and probably in no other part of the country has more money been expended in devising new machines and improvements upon old ones for the crushing of the rock. The appliances for washing the sand have not been so varied, simply for the reason that, having but one mineral, or rather metal, of high specific gravity to separate from rock material which varies but little in its character in any one mine, it requires much less care than is necessary in most mining centres of the world. At the beginning of operations in that district most of the work was in the control of Cornish miners, who introduced the simplest of Cornish mills, namely, wooden stem pestles, with wooden shafts and cams. These were well suited to the small mines, and particularly to the limited means of transporting more expensive machinery. As these facilities improved, they were enabled to change to iron, and to vary their patterns of rods, shafts, cams, and mortars. The most approved pattern, finally obtained, is the square or round stem, with collar adjustable by means of keys. In its present form it is a bar of cold rolled shafting, an eye in the top, an adjustable collar with key-plate and keys, the head and a shoe of chilled iron. The stem is fitted into the head by a slight taper. The battery has heretofore been of wood, lined with chilled cast plates, and bed-plate of the same, but within the past year the California pattern has been introduced. The screens are of sheet-steel, drilled with 16 holes to the inch. During this period of trial and gradual improvement in the pestle stamps, in the years 1855-6, the Ball steam-stamps were introduced, and after years of labor and expense, have been made the most efficient and powerful machines ever yet used for the purpose. "Diesel-powered equipment has allowed the mining industry to raise production rates and significantly improve productivity, as it is rugged, mobile and reliable, but its widespread use in underground mines has generated concerns regarding the exposure of mine workers to harmful diesel engine exhaust gases and particulate components such as diesel particulate matter (DPM), which has recently been classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The agency expressed further concerns that workers’ exposure to high DPM concentrations can increase the risk of cardiovascular, cardiopulmonary and respiratory illnesses. Three emerging technologies could have the ability to replace dieselpowered equipment and remove DPM from underground mines: fuel-cell-powered mining equipment, battery-powered mining equipment and advanced material handling systems. This paper reviews them and assesses whether they have reached the point where the pollutants emitted by diesel-powered equipment can be removed from underground mines through the introduction of zero-emission mining equipment and power systems. Information is also provided from the results of a feasibility study, including a detailed cost benefit analysis, carried out at six Canadian and nine U.S. underground mines, which looked at the possibility of replacing diesel-powered production equipment with fuel-cell-powered equipment. The remarkable pace at which battery technology is progressing is also reviewed, and the feasibility of replacing diesel-powered mining equipment with battery-powered equipment is assessed. IntroductionHazardous pollutants in underground mines. Why is it important to remove diesel particulate matter (DPM) from underground mines? Over the past 40 years, diesel-powered equipment has allowed the mining industry to achieve rising production rates and major improvements in productivity, as the diesel engine is an economical source of power and diesel-powered equipment is usually rugged, mobile and reliable. On the negative side, the toxicity of some diesel exhaust gases is well known (Grenier et al., 2001), and the widespread use of diesel-powered equipment in underground mines has generated increasing concerns about the occupational exposure of mine workers to harmful diesel engine exhaust gases and particulate components such as DPM. Diesel equipment also entails other hazards like heat and humidity. Exposure to excessive heat can cause heat illnesses, such as heat rash, heat exhaustion and heat stroke (Donoghue, 2004; Roghanchi et al., 2016), and a hot and humid underground environment negatively affects the efficiency of the workforce, which may result in a decline in production output (Roghanchi et al., 2017)."

Early in the present century, prospect-ing was active in the area of the present Miami district. There were plenty of blue and green copper outcroppings, but very little ore of a grade that would stand shipping costs had been uncovered. Late in the first decade of the century, tunnels were driven into the north and south slopes of the Inspiration ridge, and two of them exposed disseminated copper sulphide ore. This was the original discovery of such ore on the ground of what eventually became the Inspiration Division of the consolidated company. By 1910 exploration of the ground area was well along and by 1911 underground development had been started. In the next few years a large tonnage of disseminated copper ore had been proven— sufficient to justify the expenditure of several million dollars in mine development and for mine equipment plus large sums for treatment plants. The mine and treatment plants were placed in production July 1, 1915. To Jan. I, 1945, there had been produced from the mines of the Inspiration Consoli-dated Copper Co., more than 106,000,000 tons of ore. Nearly all of this tonnage had been recovered by block caving. GeologIcal and EconomIc FActors Block caving is a mining system based on the fact that if a mass of rock has a sufficient number of fractures and planes of weakness the mass will disintegrate if the support of an area of sufficient size is taken away—that is, "undercut." If the material that caves away from the bottom of a block is drawn off the spalling is progressive. There is a limit to the speed of this spalling or caving action, which varies with the structure of the rock being caved. If the rock is drawn at a rate faster than the caving rate, and if this drawing is continued too long, a void may be created that could make a very dangerous condition if the area should drop as a block and force the air below the uncaved rock out through the raises and drifts. This can be a very destructive force. On the other hand, if the broken material is not drawn fast enough the swell of the material in place to broken material would pack the mass until it was almost solid again and could not be drawn without much blasting, or perhaps even partially undercutting again. Geologically therefore it would seem that any rock with seams and fractures would cave; but for block caving there should be enough seams and fractures in a limited area so that such an area will cave and produce a product that can be drawn safely, rapidly enough and at a cost justified by the value of the product being drawn. At the Inspiration the disseminated ores occur in two formations, the Pinal schist and the Schultze granite. There is no material difference in the grade of the ore formed in the schist and in the granite. The chief copper minerals are chalcocite, malachite, azurite and chrysocolla. Other copper minerals occur in limited quantity.

To acquire knowledge on the general trend of primary and supplemental supports used in tailgates of US longwall mines a survey of 76 mines with 86 longwall panels was carried out in the summer of 1993. This paper attempts to provide some insight on most commonly used support types as primary and supplemental supports in tailgates. Analysis of the surveyed data show that fully grouted resin bolts and cribs are the most commonly used primary and supplemental supports in tailgates in longwall mines of USA.

1. Introduction Laboratory and industrial grinding tests have shown that the process of size reduction can be significantly influenced by chemicals added to the powder or slurry being ground. The terms grinding aid or grinding additive refers to a substance which when mixed into the mill contents causes an increase in the rate of size reduction. The increased rate can be used to grind a higher feed rate to the desired product size or it can be used to produce a finer product size at a fixed feed rate. Whether the use of a grinding aid is justified in any given situation depends on the cost of the substance versus the improvement of output or product quality obtained with its use. Obviously, an expensive chemical must be effective in very small concentrations if it is to be economically justifiable; the cost criteria is calculated on the basis of the cost of the grinding additive per ton of material ground. Although there is direct experimental verification of the advantageous effect of grinding additives, no sound scientific explanation has yet been offered which explains or predicts the general behavior of additives. Rose and Sullivan have summarized most of the work undertaken prior to 1950 and Hartley, Prisbrey, and Wick have recently prepared an updated synopsis of the grinding additive literature. Many of the studies reported consist of subjecting materials with simple geometric shapes to some type of hardness or controlled single fracture test. On the other hand, a number of the studies were carried out on operating industrial scale mills, with little control or precise monitoring of the effect of the additives.

In this decade mining companies in western Canada have searched for reliable and inexpensive ways to improve mine productivity. Truck dispatching systems, equipment vital sign monitoring and sensing, vehicle guidance systems, have all been considered. In this paper the off -highway vehicle monitoring systems used or planned to be installed at surface coal mines in western Canada are described. The monitoring systems are divided according to their function and application; installation and testing procedures are described, as well as the economic benefits to the mining operation.

Transmission of vibration to the operator from percussive vibrating tools is increasingly of concern in industrial and mining applications. Prolonged exposure to high levels of vibration transmitted via the hand causes disorders known as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). The vascular component of HAVS is called vibration white finger (VWF) and has a debilitating effect on the hand. Vibration at frequencies below 1250 Hz, a tight hand-grip force and cold environments are reported to increase the likelihood of developing VWF. A vibration damping handle design with patents pending that addresses some of the causes of VWF has been developed and retrofits onto jackleg pneumatic rock drills. The handle is decoupled from the drill while maintaining jackleg twist-grip controls on the hand-grip using a combination of sealed self adjusting hydraulic pistons and compliant materials in series, and a new air control valve. The ergonomics of the hand-grip was also modified by the addition of a polyurethane sleeve with a diameter of 50 mm. The new hand-grip reduces direct cold metal contact and minimizes grip force. Measurement of vibration as the quantity acceleration was made in accordance with international standard ISO 5349. Overall vibration damping in all axes of 50% to 63% was attained at frequencies below 1250 Hz. The dimensions of the damping handle are comparable and its weight is only 100 g heavier than a standard handle.

An extra-refractory gold ore in China belongs to Carlin Type Gold Ore which is not only submicroscopic but also rich in arsenic and organic carbon. They have been proved that its floatability is not good enough and the gold in the ore could not be leached almost if it was not pretreated. The tests for the ore were carried out in accordance with flotation-concentrate preoxidation-cyanidation(or CIL) processes in order to exploit the mine. Two new depressants were discovered in the flotation tests and improved concentrate grades from about 20g/t to 32~50g/t. The methods of the concentrate preoxidation tests were alkaline atmospheric oxidation, acidic atmospheric oxidation, acidic pressure oxidation, roasting oxidation?biooxidation. The cyanidation tests after the concentrate preoxidation have proved the gold extraction of the pressure oxidation to be the highest(92.5%) and that of roasting secondary(89.3%). After fuller techno-economic comparison, it is suggested that the flotation-pressure oxidation or roasting-CIL process should be the most optimal for treating the ore. The gold recoveries of the ore were 83% for the pressure oxidation and 80% for the roasting respectively.

Quite recently, there has been developed an automatic temperature regulator, operating in conjunction with a pyrometer of the thermoelectric type, in which the control is a slow regulation, with a range capable of regulat-ing valves, dampers, rheostats, or any other rotatable member, through one or more complete revolutions. It can control two valves at the same time, with a fixed definite ratio between them. Aside from those conditions in which it is. necessary to control two valves with a definite ratio one to the other, the greatest advantage that this slow, even control will have over those controls that are either all on or all off, will be for use in connection with processes where a large temperature variation is required, extended over a considerable period of time; that is, where the temperature must be regulated along an in-creasing or decreasing time-temperature curve.

The problem of cross-hole explosive malfunctioning in rock blasting (including sympathetic detonation, desensitization and cut-offs) is a function of delay and spacing in a blast which should be designed to avoid such occurrences. On a delay-spacing chart, the phenomenon of explosive malfunctioning is explained by dividing the chart into different regions, while the shape and size of each region could vary from one explosive to the other. Over seventy blasts have been carried out at the CANMET Experimental Mine to identify the malfunctioning characteristics of specific emulsion, water-gel and dynamite explosives. In each experiment, two parallel blastholes, 32 mm in diameter and 1.7 m deep, were drilled downwards in an underground drift.

[ ] In November 2005, Essroc Cement, part of the Italcementi Group, commissioned a long overland conveyor at their Nazareth plant in Pennsylvania. This conveyor, tagged CV-105, was designed to transport 1000 tph of limestone from the quarry to the kiln, and 400 tph of hot clinker (at 300°F) at back from the kiln to a handling facility about halfway back. Conveyor CV-105 is 8969 ft (2733 m) long. It gains 152 ft (46 m) of elevation in the first 1570 ft (480 m), then is mostly flat for the remaining 7400 ft (2250 m) (Figure 1). After the limestone is discharged at the head pulley, hot clinker is loaded onto the return side of the belt. This clinker can be discharged at one of two locations.
