"A 2400 acre extension to the existing Tailings Area is under development at Inco's Copper Cliff Milling operations.The new area is being developed in stages as production levels dictate thus minimizing immediate capital expenditures while permitting disposal operations to proceed as further site work progresses.The first stage of the new storage site will be fully operational by early 1987 and will include a 400 acre site specific to the storage of Pyrrhotite rejected from milling circuits. The Pyrrhotite site is located in the centre of the Tailings area and is designed for water cover throughout much of its projected life.The new development incorporates perimeter dams designed to operate with low phreatic levels for maximum structural stability. Acid seepage water is collected behind secondary impermeable dams for return to the Tailings Pond.Tailings are deposited by up-stream methods permitting segregation of coarse fractions for use in future lifts of the perimeter dams."

It is now generally conceded that if a steel is to develop optimum physical properties in the conventionally quenched and tempered condition, the microstruc- ture after quenching should consist wholly of martensite; and that transformation of austenite to intermediate-temperature products during quenching will have a deleterious effect upon the physical properties, particularly the toughness, of the tempered material. This implies that, in order to obtain the optimum physical properties from a given steel, its "harden-ability " should be high enough to suppress all transformation except that to martensite under the heating and quenching conditions to which it will be subjected, and this premise is probably the most important reason for hardenability control. However, the criterion of hardenability that at present is most widely accepted and used is based on a microstructure of 50 per cent martensite. This criterion, which was suggested by Grossmann,' does have considerable justification. It may be readily measured by a fracture or etch test and, since it represents the point at which the hardness is changing most rapidly with variations in cooling rate, it may be determined empirically from a hardness-depth curve by determining the point of steepest slope (the inflection point). the Rocky Mountain Region since 1950, drilled pier foundations have been widely used to combat structural movement problems in expansive soils. It is now an accepted practice for engineers to use drilled pier foundations in expansive soil areas. Piers are generally drilled into bedrock in a zone unaffected by moisture change. With some exceptions, such system has successfully prevented damage incurred in the structures as the result of soil expansion. In the last 15 years, no significant advancement has taken place in the design of the drilled pier system on expansive soils. Numerous failures continued to be reported. Causes for the failures were placed on poor drainage, inadequate void under the grade beams or mushrooms on top of the piers. Engineers realize that these are certainly not the major problems. The basic design criteria should be critically reviewed. It is the purpose of this paper to point out the actual problems confronted by designers, the failure module and remedial measures, The writer does not claim to have the solutions. In fact, it will be a long time before real solutions can be found, yet the writer believes the engineering communities, the construction industry and the general public should be aware of the true picture of the problem.

STEEPROCK LAKE (Figure 1) lies about two miles north of Atikokan, a village approximately one hundred and forty miles west of Fort William and one hundred miles east of Fort Frances on the Canadian National railway. The possible presence of hematite beneath the waters of Middle arm was inferred by early geological investigators (1890-1903) from the dense hematite float found on the southerly shores of this portion of the lake (1). A dip-needle survey of Middle arm, undertaken in the winter of 1930-31 by J. G. Cross, indicated two areas of high magnetic attraction which Mr. Cross thought might be due to magnetic iron oxides associated with possible hematite bodies. Bedrock could not be reached by the ineffectual hand-drilling so courageously attempted, and further work was abandoned. It was not until 1937 that Mr. Jos. Errington, of Toronto, convinced of the possibilities, determined to support Mr. Cross to the extent of several thousand feet of drilling. During the winter of 1937-38, holes Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5, and 13 were put down (see Figure 1). The first four of these holes demonstrated that the areas of magnetic attraction outlined by the dip-needle survey east of the Narrows and southwest of Elbow point were due to ash rock (2). As a result, Mr. Cross decided to investigate the bordering areas of low magnetic attraction and selected a location near the high ferruginous lime (3) point in the northeast of Middle arm. Dense, hard hematite beneath approximately 350 feet of water and clay was struck in the first hole, and, before the end of the winter's drilling, hematite had been encountered in holes Nos. 6 to 13 along a straight line 700 feet in length (see Figure 1). In the meantime, the Steerola ( 4) Exploration Company had been formed to continue development and already, in the spring of 1938, W. D. Neeland, the Company geologist, had come to the conclusion that the most probable location for possible hematite was at the ash-lime contact. Accordingly, during the summer, drilling was continued off-shore in holes Nos. 15, 25, and 27 (see Figure 2) toward possible hematite bodies inferred by Mr. Neeland.

Some of the more important properties of finished materials are strength, ductility, toughness, resistance to alternating and repeated stresses, etc. Of these, the property that appears to have received the least consideration, at least in this country, is toughness, which is due, possibly, to our regarding toughness as a qualitative property or, at any rate, as one that parallels ductility. This arises out of our greater experience with the simple carbon steels in the rolled or forged (non-heat-treated) condition which, qualitatively, are tough if ductile and are not tough if brittle. In this way we have erroneously become accustomed to judging the toughness of a material from its behavior in the tensile or similar test. The point of view presented in the present paper is that toughness, like hardness or tensile strength, should be regarded as an independent property and of sufficient importance to require, in so far as that may be possible, quantitative determinations. If such be true, it becomes at once necessary to devise experimental means for measuring or valuating toughness, and the notched-bar impact test (the Charpy test) is advanced as the most logical test that has so far been developed for this purpose. It is further advanced, with particular emphasis, that we have two kinds of toughness to deal with and, accordingly, they will be dealt with independently. Classification of Materials According to Toughness Toughness has been defined somewhat as follows: Tough materials are those that offer considerable resistance to permanent deformation but which, once such resistance has been overcome, may be deformed plastically, but only by the expenditure of considerable energy. In other words, tough materials may be deformed plastically but they absorb a considerable amount of work in the process. This kind of toughness may be called "static" toughness when the rate of loading is reasonably slow or "dynamic" toughness when the rate of loading is comparatively rapid, as in impact testing, but in all cases the stress distribution is essentially uniform. This paper develops the procedure for simulating the special locked-cycle Work Index laboratory test using the kinetic parameters obtained by conducting standard size-mass balance (SMB) grinding tests and presents the results for three materials - quartz, a taconite iron ore and a bituminous coal. It was found that the WI could be determined by simulation; however, if a material breaks abnormally, a full description of its abnormal breakage is necessary. It was also found that the sensitivity of the WI test procedure to the sieving process and the estimating of the 80% passing size of the sieve undersize is sufficient to question the practice of quoting a WI to two or more decimal places. Finally, if a material grinds abnormally in the Work Index mill, then the WI test should not be conducted.

There is often a difference in opinion about the allocation of risk in the establishment of mine closure bonds or financial assurances. From the State’s perspective, protection is needed to ensure that the broader community is not left with the liability of properly closing a mine in the event of a default by the mine operator. Such a default might occur where an operator decides to abandon a site, perform incomplete rehabilitation, becomes insolvent or claims limited liability. On the other hand, mine operators who can demonstrate a strong financial position plus a record of social and environmental commitment and performance, argue that there should be some recognition of this in setting a bond that is less than the full cost of early closure. They argue that a mine rehabilitation bond based on the full cost of early closure is overly conservative and ignores the actual risk of the operator being in default. Sludge, formed by lime treatment of acidic drainage and stored in tailing ponds of the Sudbury region, contains 5-7% Ni, mostly in a mix of hydroxides with Fe (~ 10%), Mg (~ 10%) and Cu (-0.5%), and Ca (-3.5%) as sulphate. Investigations were conducted to recover nickel by a 2-stage process. In the first stage, the sludge was leached with sulphuric acid at pH 3.2. About 90% of the nickel was extracted, producing a solution, which contained mainly nickel (2 g/L) and magnesium (3.7 g/L). In the second stage, nickel was separated by treating with ozone which recovered 99% of the nickel in the Ni(III) oxidation state as -85% pure nickel oxide-hydroxide (NiOOH) precipitate. The oxide settled and filtered readily. A potential use of the product in battery making is suggested. The leach residue contained 0.5% Ni making it less toxic for disposal. Some physical properties of nickel oxy-hydroxide and process parameters including ozone consumption will be discussed.

"Recycling polymer based end-of-life materials as carbon resources for a partial replacement of coke/coal can make important contributions towards enhancing the environmental sustainability of steelmaking processes. An in-depth high temperature (1550°C) investigation has been carried on waste CDs/DVDs focussed specifically on char generation, characterization and dissolution into molten iron. The simultaneous presence of carbon and oxygen in polymeric chains on polycarbonate substrates resulted in the generation of a significant pore structure and exposed surfaces. Carbon dissolution studies into molten iron were carried out on the raw polymer as well on chars; high levels of carbon pick-up were observed in both cases after 15 minutes of contact at high temperatures. INTRODUCTIONOver the past sixty years, plastics have played an important part of our daily lives and are being increasingly used in all aspects of the global economy. More than 260 million tons of plastics are produced annually worldwide. Their rapid growth and extensive utilization with a short life span (such as packaging) has created a massive waste problem. Although the waste plastic component in municipal solid waste (MSW) amounts to only about 10 %, plastics have a high volume-to-weight ratio and these are generally not biodegradable. In Australia, ~19.20 % of plastics were recycled in 2009-2010 (PACIA, 2010); with the total consumption being estimated at 1,501,258 tonnes, 288,194 tonnes of plastics were recycled. There are serious environmental concerns with the two key waste management options, i.e. land filling and incineration, and there exists an urgent need for developing alternative recycling approaches. In this paper, we focus our attention on recycling waste CDs/DVDs polycarbonate substrates as a carbon resource in steelmaking.CDs/DVDs used for music/data/image are made from aromatic polycarbonate resin (hereafter abbreviated PC). This resin is also widely used as an engineering plastic in applications such as automobiles, mobile phones, notebook type personal computers, cameras & video cameras, electric & electronic appliances, fire equipment, life & living goods, roofing sheets, etc. High consumption and growth (~10% annually) of PC utilization is attributed to its excellent properties such as outstanding impact resistance, transparency, heat resistance, and dimensional stability. IF you have ever travelled in the valley lying between the Selkirks and the Rockies in the East Koorenay district, you will have noted that the former mountains are rounded and massive, while the serrated peaks of the latter, fingering into the sky, bring an entirely different. picture. These two mountain ranges, with the comparatively level valley between, serve splendidly to introduce the subject for discussion. It is rather strange that, despite the fact that wear is undoubredly the greatest force with which human ingenuity bas to contend, it has come in for very little study from the stand point of pure science. Empiricism has been the sole ally in the fight for improvement! That we may have a clear understanding as to what we mean by wear, I would include in the term the breaking dawn of ail solid matter, from the natural wearing dawn of the mountains previously mentioned, to the hale in the mill pipe-line, which forces one to shut-down-usually at some un-earthly hour-to carry out a repair. It seems a far cry from mountains to mill launders or pipe-lines, but, magnified sufficiently, most of the materials with which we have to deal would show surfaces not unlike those we see around us. The progressive steps of wear, or ?erosion' as our geological friends would prefer to term it, are exemplified in the two ranges of mountains and the valley between. True, the wearing dawn by natural forces is a slow process. The aeons which have passed since first these mountains were formed seem endless. The natural forces pitted against them seem puny in the light of the interminable rime that has been needed to effect the changes. But here, as in the case of the materials with which we are dealing day by day, the combination of many forces ultimately brings about that condition which we describe as 'worn out'. In the case of the mountains, it is when they are finally levelled into plains, and in the case of equipment which we use, it is when that equipment will no longer serve its purpose.

"For general stability analysis of rock slopes, rock mass strength and rock mass disturbance are definitely should be considered. In addition, the impact of earthquakes must be taken into account. In fact, the rock mass strength is very difficult to be assessed which causes the difficulty of analysing rock slope stability. Therefore, an empirical failure criterion, the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, has been proposed. It is one of the most widely accepted approaches to estimate rock mass strength. The rock mass disturbance is important and was found having significant influence on evaluating rock slope stability, especially for rock slope with poor quality rock mass. In the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, the disturbance factor can represent the level of the rock mass disturbance which would provide a reasonable basis for estimating rock mass strength.This research will not only discuss the slope factor of safety, but also consider the influence of the seismic force on rock slope stability assessment using pseudo-static method. In practice, only horizontal seismic coefficient is used. Various magnitudes of the disturbance factor and recommended blasting damage zone thickness are also taken into account. The blasting damage zone thickness considered ranges from 0.5 to 2.5 times of slope height. The research results have potential to be extended and then sets of comprehensive stability charts can be provided for the rock slope stability evaluations. They will be convenient tools for practising engineers. In this study, finite element upper bound and lower bound limit analysis methods are employed. Their applicability has been investigated in some previous studies. The differences between upper bound and lower bound solutions are less than ±10% which would provide reasonable and acceptable range for rock slope stability safety factor estimation."

"Liquid core length is a very important parameter of the process of continuous casting, which directly reflects the cooling status in secondary cooling zone and solidification rate of the slab. In this paper, the billet caster in some steel plant in China was chosen as the prototype of simulating. A numerical simulating model for calculating the liquid core length of continuous casting billet was built by ProCAST software, which was verified reasonable and accurate by pin-shooting technique. Based on the model, the relationships between casting speed, casting temperature and liquid core length of casting billet were found, which was very practically useful for the workers on sit to improve casting billet quality. IntroductionContinuous casting process developed very rapidly because of the high metal yield, energy saving, and low-cost 111• And the quality requirements of continuous casting billet for customers became higher and higher with the fast development of economic121• Internal defect usually is the major quality problem for continuous casting billet[3•61 , which is influenced by the solidification process of casting billet, especially the solidification process of liquid core17•81 • So it is very important to study on the relationship between casting parameters and the liquid core length which means the distance between the crystallizer meniscus and the casting billet solidification end-point. In practical production process, the workers usually control the quality of casting billet according to the liquid core length."

In the United States there are approximately 155 established operating plants located in 37 states, extending from coast to coast. Silica, in varying degrees of chemical purity, enjoys a very diversified market. Silica is the basic ingredient of glass, bothcontainer and flat glass, and is used for grinding and polishing of flat glass up to the final polishing stages where rouge is generally used. Silica is used for foundry molds and cores, sandblasting, stone cutting, refractories, placing sand in furances, glass coatings and linings, laboratory glassware, construction, oil well fracturing for increased oil flow, filtering purposes, silicate of soda, silicon carbide, and others.

INTRODUCTION The trend in the coal industry for many years has been to make every- thing "bigger and faster." This also held true for loading and storage facilities. Where once a million ton per year mine was rare, three to five million ton per year mines are not uncommon today in the bituminous industry. This greatly increased production, made possible through mechanization, required greatly improved loading facilities just to get the coal away from the mine. Also, there is a trend toward combining production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant. In addition to increased loading capacity, this frequently necessitates raw coal storage and blending facilities. The development of the unit train with its attendant economics, more than any other factor, has contributed to the widespread construction of storage and high-speed loading facilities. In the export market, the construction of ever larger coal colliers has contributed to a need for faster and larger loading facilities. In this climate of rapidly changing technology, any written account is faced with the possibility of obsolescence before its appearance. Thus, this chapter seeks to define the common and current practice in coal loading and storage facilities with the full knowledge that this practice is an ever-moving target. FUNDAMENTALS OF COAL STORAGE Storage of coal is becoming an increasingly important part of coal handling systems at mines, particularly since the advent of the unit train concept in transportation. In order to take advantage of reduced transportation rates on trainload shipments of coal offered by unit train movement, operators have found that storage is an economic necessity. In unit train practice large predetermined quantities must be loaded in relatively short periods of time as opposed to conventional practice where coal is loaded at a speed dependent on the production capacity of the mine and/or the cleaning capacity of the preparation plant. Two surveys of storage practices at mines reveal several objectives for storage.1, 2 Raw and/or clean coal storage is generally practiced in order to accomplish one, or a combination, of the following objectives: 1. To improve plant efficiency by distributing plant feed over the entire operating time, or to allow a preparation rate different from the production rate. 2. To limit interruptions of supply, ie, allow mine and plant to function independently with delays in one not affecting the operation of the other.

In construction of drilled shafts under water, placing concrete in the shafts is technically demanding and involves complex construction logistics. Past construction experience has demonstrated that high quality concrete can be placed in drilled shafts under water with a proper concrete mix and proper placement techniques. However, a significant number of failures have occurred which have resulted in excessive cost overruns and delays. These problems may have occurred because proper underwater concrete construction techniques have not been widely disseminated within the industry. This is a technical area where competent design and sound construction planning can achieve a significant reduction in both risk and cost. This paper will discuss some key technical issues in the concrete mix design, concrete production and placement for the drilled shaft construction. The paper also describes two lesson-learned case histories from drilled shaft construction projects.

Although lateritic ore deposits are relatively flat-lying, surficial ore bodies, the evaluation of lateritic bauxite and nickel deposits is among the most difficult problems confronting an economic geologist. Laterite is a soil formed under tropical conditions resulting in the concentration, within the soil zone, of certain trivalent metals-principally iron and aluminum, but also, locally, nickel and manganese. The soil zone is divided into two parts: (a) the true soil or lateritic zone and (b) the zone of partially altered bed rock or saprolite. Whereas bauxite generally is confined to the lateritic zone, some nickel deposits occur in both the laterite and saprolite zones. The evaluation of bauxite and lateritic nickel deposits thus has both similarities and differences. These ores have been formed by supergene, soil-forming solutions moving downward through zones of widely varying permeability within the weathering rock. Because the permeability varies widely, both vertically and laterally, the extent of weathering may vary greatly within short distances. Because the weathering process varies widely, the degree of metal concentration may also vary widely. It is not at all uncommon for a laterite to change, within a few centimeters, from a virtually valueless rock to a high grade ore. Moreover, the depth of weathering, and hence the depth and form of the ore profile, vary greatly. Obviously, for this type of deposit, a few grab samples or a few drill holes are virtually worthless. The evaluation of such a deposit requires a sophisticated statistical study based on thousands of carefully selected samples. As a rule of thumb, the cost of evaluating a large bauxite or lateritic nickel deposit will be about one cent per ton of ore in the ground. Thus, the cost of evaluating a several hundred million ton deposit may be considerable.

Installation by vibrodrivers of sheet and bearing piles generates periodic vibrations in the surrounding ground, which have been widely measured and reported. One of the possible consequential effects of these vibrations is ground settlement caused by the compaction of loose granular soils. Vibratory compaction settlement of a range of granular soils has been studied in the laboratory using a 150mm diameter Rowe cell, which allows sample preparation and control during vibrations equivalent to conditions in the field during vibrodriving. The cell containing the soil sample was mounted on an electromagnetic shaker and vibrated at amplitudes and frequencies appropriate for soils adjacent to vibrodrivers. The changes in sample height were recorded.
