In the course of investigating the soft X-ray absorption spectra of Ni-A1 alloys, Das and ~zfiroff' observed an anomalous brittleness in solid solutions containing 3 to 5 at. pct Al. The brittle alloys also had anomalously larger lattice constants' and the fine structure at the nickel K edge of an alloy containing 3.96 at. pct A1 unexpectedly resembled that of NiA1 more closely than that of a solid solution containing 5.51 at. pct Al. This led them to suggest the possibility that short-range ordering was produced during the homogenization anneal to which each specimen was subjected, similar to that observed in dilute solutions of vanadium and of chromium in nickel: as the principal cause of embrittlement. It was decided to repeat the above measurements on several alloys in this composition range in order to test the above hypothesis and to establish the effect of heat treatment on the alloys' properties. Three solid solutions in this range were prepared containing, respectively, 3.16, 4.00, and 4.54 at. pct Al, in addition to alloys containing 6 and 9 pct. All samples were annealed in vacuum at 1800°F for 100 hr and then furnace-cooled to room temperature, as in the original study. The lattice constants of these alloys are shown by open circles in Fig. 1 and can be seen to fit quite closely the curve established by the previously measured values, indicated by solid circles. (The experimental errors are of the order of the size of the circles, +o.oo~R.) The three alloys containing 3 to 5 at. pct A1 were found to be quite brittle, as previously reported. In order to test the possibility of ordering, these three solid solutions were again heated to 1800°F and, following a few hours at that temperature, were quenched directly to room temperature. All three alloys lost their brittleness. In order to verify the proposed ordering hypothesis, it was decided to subject each sample to several cycles of quenching and annealing (disordering and ordering). The results of oxidation and corrosion experiments on niobium in oxygen and steam at temperatures of 350° to 650°C, and in dilute sulphate solutions at 300°C are presented. The oxidation of niobium in oxygen can be explained in terms of a pre-transition period, which obeys an approximately parabolic rate law, and a post-transition period in which a more rapid linear rate is partially stifled by restriction of the gas flow due to the gvowth of the porous outer film. Due to changes in the porosity of the outer layers the restriction presented by the porous outel. film attains a limiting value. Subsequent oxidation obeys a linear rate law and shows an almost linear dependence of the rate on gas pressure. liltimately a second failure of the protective film may take place leading to a further acceleration in the oxidation rate. In water vapor the oxidation of niobium follows a parabolic rate law and does not show a transition to linear kinetics. The higher oxide, Nba05, was usually absent from the NbO/NbO2 film which was formed. The addition of a small partial pressure of oxygen to the water vapo3, resulted in accelerated oxidation according to the normal kinetics for oxidation in oxygen. The oxygen reacted preferentially with the niobium, and the protective oxide film was reformed when all the oxygen had been consumed. This behavior supports the theory that nucleation of Nb205 on the surface of the protective NbO/NbO2 film is the cause of the accelerated oxidation. After oxidation in steam at high-pressure Nb2Os was found in the protective film. The mode of formation of Nb2O5 under these conditions did not produce a change in kinetics, but was thought to explain the comparatively large dependence on pressure of the oxidation rate. The kinetics of oxidation in oxygenated aqueous solutions at 300°C were similar to those for oxidation in oxygen. A penetrating attack on niobium sheet may be related to the second breakaway observed by some investigators of oxidation in oxygen.

Load testing is important for controlling the quality of piled foundations. The Statnamic test is an alternative to existing testing methods with a load duration that lies between that for static and dynamic tests. Current methods of analysis offer excellent correlation between static and Statnamic tests for coarse-grained soils but often over-predict the capacity for fine-grained soils. Thus a calibration chamber is being used to produce instrumented beds of clay with reproducible properties. A model pile placed in the beds can be loaded at varying rates using a computer controlled servo-hydraulic system. Results from the modelling will be used to improve methods of analysis and govern the design of a full-scale study. Initial results suggest the rate effect can be represented by a power law relating pile velocity and resistance. Statnamic loading of the model pile produced large negative pore pressures in the clay bed.

The mining paradigm is changing on the continent of Africa. Jessica Kogel?s closing statement from her September 2013 President?s Page (ME, September 2013, pp. 6) has never been more appropriate, ?Africa is shaping up to be the next mining powerhouse, and there is huge opportunity for local communities, national governments and private industry to work together to create a win-win situation for all.? Supporting this notion, attendance at numerous industry conferences around the world demonstrates the shift toward a more sustainable, more environmentally conscious extractive model. But questions remain: How effectively is the industry making this transition, and how willing are companies to learn from the experiences of others? The international development community, as we like to call ourselves, is going through a parallel shift. We are experiencing our own funding crisis; governments are not as flush with resources as they were pre-economic meltdown. But more importantly, after a half century of implementing development programs, we must admit that while some of our programs have been fantastically successful, too many still fail to achieve the goal of poverty alleviation for the world?s poorest. Moving forward, we are forced to recognize that achieving success in scale and sustainability is not always accomplished from our work alone. As the director of international programs for Africare, a nonprofit with more than 40 years of experience implementing community-based development programs in Africa, I can report that our organization is changing the way we think about successful development partnerships. Africare recognizes that for too long the mining sector and nonprofits have been at odds, choosing noncommunication as a ?solution? to the problem. Both sides now recognize that this standoff is outdated, and Africare, specifically, is ready to cross the proverbial line. We see the potential benefits of mining for local communities and, when done responsibly, the opportunity to properly manage Africa?s resource boom as a benefit to all. There are challenges in this conversation. Many mining professionals view nonprofits as whistle-blowers, ready in a pinch to speak to news sources and complain about poor operational standards. Those are advocacy organizations, and while their role is important, they are not the only nonprofits interested in mining operations in developing countries. Organizations like Africare, with decades of experience implementing poverty reduction programs, approach this differently. We know we can work with mining companies to promote economic opportunity in the communities where mining operations are occurring. We recognize that the conversation is difficult, and we are open to discussions about how we can bring our unique experience to bear on the problems faced by mining companies in carrying out their investment programs.

"Sample drops were evaporated on Lexan disks on which fission tracks were etched and counted after neutron irradiation. [U] = 0.01 ppb could be measured. This method is rapid, cheap, simple and accurate when sufficient control and checking is possible, but several types of error were encountered in its use, the natures and sources of which were investigated but not always determined. The most troublesome were ""annealing"" processes which sometimes altered the fission tracks so that they were not fully revealed, or acquired varying appearances, after etching. Several different annealing processes seemed to exist and seemed to be produced by alteration of the Lexan surface by dissolved components in the solutions and, perhaps, by radiation and local heating during neutron irradiation. The appearances of the etched tracks varied with the natures of the droplet solutions even when annealing appeared to be absent, and for this reason, standards are best prepared by additions of known amounts of U to sample solutions. Contamination of sample droplets by U-containing dust from the air is best avoided by preparing the disks away from areas where other U-analysis is being carried out.IntroductionFission tracks are regions of radiation dam age produced in solids by the fission of atoms such as 235U. They can be enlarged to sizes visible through optical microscopes by etching surfaces through which they pass with solvents in which the solids are slightly soluble. A sample to be analyzed for U may be placed against a film of a solid of negligible uranium concentration (the track detector) and irradiated with thermal neutrons in a nuclear reactor to fission 235U. The track detector is then etched and the number of tracks per unit area, ?, which is proportional to the uranium concentration of the sample, c, and the neutron do se, n, is found by counting through a microscope. Uranium in solutions ha s been measured by evaporating drops on track detectors, irradiating, etching and determining the number of tracks per drop, T(2,3,4,5). Extensive test s of this method are reported here."

"Morphology is a tool that is rarely used for mineral breakage mechanism evaluation. Ground particles are typically assessed for their size distribution. They are also visually analyzed using image analysis. However, image analysis is not a comprehensive evaluation of the particle surface texture. It evaluates particle’s size parameters such as area, diameter, and perimeter amongst other features. On the other hand, morphology analysis takes the particle assessment to another level of detail. Morphology analysis evaluates particles’ roundness, elongation and angularity that would indicate the degree of roughness of the particle. According to Roufail and Klein (2009), rougher surfaces are generated due to breakage along grain boundaries – intergranular breakage. Mill operation, particularly mill speed, dictates the dynamics in the mill. Stirred mills are known to break the particles via abrasion under standard operation. However, if the dynamics of the grinding media in the mill are changed, the particles could be more exposed to impact and compression loading that would lead to a different mode of breakage.In this paper, the effect of material properties and mill operating conditions on particle morphology will be studied. Hard non-sulfide versus soft sulfide minerals are compared, namely quartz and galena, respectively. Extreme mill speeds are tested covering the range of 1000 to 2000 rpm for a 4-litre Netzsch (ISA) mill. In addition to particle size distribution, micro-analysis is executed in the form of morphological analysis using a tested manual roughness point counting technique.INTRODUCTIONGrinding in general and stirred milling in particular are processes that are used to break particles to liberate metal-bearing minerals for further separation downstream. The energy required to achieve the target particle size versus maximum possible liberation has been studied intensively and it is usually the breaking point for the grinding system chosen in a process flowsheet. Operating conditions are dictated by the energy consumption. Becker et al. (2001) related different forms of energy such as input, specific, volume/mass specific energies to stress intensities and final product fineness. Other research studies focused on energy input in a stirred mill (Zheng, Harris and Somasundaran, 1996)."

The paper will describe the $1.7 billion Milwaukee Program. Past contracting practices of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District are discussed. To minimize costs and claims, the MMSD has implemented some recommendations from Better Contracting for Underground Construction. Currently implemented are: full disclosure of subsurface data including interpretations, the deletion of disclaimers relating to subsurface information, use of the federal Differing Site Condition clause, payment for mobilization. Also considered was the recommendation concerning Wrap Up Insurance. The MMSD shares and allocates certain designated risks through the Contract. A claims handling methodology has been developed and used on this major construction program.

The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed an inflatable feed-tube seal (IFTS) for high-expansion foam generators. The IFTS is a lightweight, portable, rectangular inflatable bag that can be used by firefighters to rapidly seal large openings, such as those in underground mines, and to simultaneously provide a feed-tube for a high-expansion foam generator. Thus allows fire fighting foam to freely flow to the fire site and control or extinguish the fire. Studies indicated that a high-expansion foam plug will travel 183 m (600 ft) down an entry with a 4.5% rise in elevation, before leakage of foam from around the inflatable partition.

The problem addressed was to develop automated image analysis of metal welds to replace unreliable and costly 100% visual inspection. The objective was to evaluate neural networks combined with features from gray level surfaces. Photomicrographs of the welded seam in Zircaloy-4 channels used in nuclear fuel rod assemblies were examined. The methodology used was to select a set of morphological feature coefficients from Bessel Fourier morphological feature coefficients extracted from digitized photomicrographs. The selected morphological feature coefficients were then used to train a neural network. The approach was verified initially by successfully training a neural network using the known, secondary chemistry of the alloy welds. The results were good. The Bessel Fourier coefficients captured sufficient information from the metallographic images to distinguish weld quality. This approach has the combined advantages of compressing the images through Bessel Fourier coefficients and give the ability to rapidly process large amounts of data using neural networks.

With the trend in the coal mining industry pushing towards improved productivity and greater production, the number and size of longwall panels is increasing rapidly. The development and mining of large longwall panels causes unique problems in the provision of adequate ventilation at the working faces. Because of the transient nature of the longwall panel, and the difficult field conditions for ventilation measurements, detailed pressure and volume surveys are often not conducted around the longwall circuit. This is unforlunate because the highest resistance airway in longwall mines is typically the longwall tailgate, which frequently represents the only unregulated split in the ventilation network. This paper examines data collected from ventilation studies of longwall panels at nine mines. The variation in airway resistance, ventilating pressure and airflow is examined and compared with specific factors such as airway dimensions, ground conditions and support type used.

Soon New York City will have a new train station. A tunnel project is under construction to extend Line 7 to a new station that is located near the Jacob K. Javits Con-vention Center. This is also part of the Hudson Yards redevelopment project that is intended to aid redevelop-ment of the west side of Midtown Manhattan around the Long Island Railroad?s Caemmerer Railyard. The station, or ?cavern? as it?s called by those excavating it, will be the portal for that growth. In the city, public transportation means high-rise residential proper-ties will have better access to the business district, and those outside the area will have greater access to event facilities ? two factors that are critical for development investment.

"Haulage accidents usually are responsible for about 17 or 18 percent of all coal-mine fatalities and about 21 percent of all non-fatal coal-mine accidents. When the relatively small number of employees continuously exposed to haulage hazards is considered, it would appear that haulage is more hazardous than any other phase of coal-mine operation.Haulage accidents have increased from year to year, doubtless due to the increase in electrical haulage, and particularly to the use of larger cars, heavier locomotives, longer hauls, and greater speed. Unless very definite steps are taken to eliminate the causes of these accidents, they will continue to increase rather than be reduced, as they can and should be.Underground haulage in many of the large modern mines of today is similar in many respects to railroad practice. In recent years the railroads have made wonderful strides in reducing accidents, and instead. of being one of the most hazardous occupations, as it once was, railroading is now one of the safest. Doubtless, if thought and action, similar to that given to reducing accidents among railroad passengers and employees, were given to safety in mine haulage, under¬ground haulage accidents could be reduced in about the same ratio.Haulage accidents may be classified, according to responsibility, into two groups - those for which management is largely responsible and those for which the employee is largely to blame; there is, however, an overlapping of responsibility from one group to the other. If, therefore, haulage accidents are to be reduced, it is absolutely essential that both management and employees cooperate to this end.In the first group, for which management is largely responsible, may be included accidents due to faulty equipment, moor track, a poorly arranged system of haulage, lack of clearance or of overhead protection, and dirty roadways; even in these features, however, the employee is not without a measure of responsibility, as failure of haulage equipment possibly may be due to lack of care on his part, failure to report when equipment is out of order, or failure to do a good workmanlike job of installing or repairing or operating.To the second group of accidents for which the employee may be largely responsible, belong those caused by such careless practices as jumping on and off fast-moving trips, coupling on the ""fly"", running at excessive speeds, failure to properly block cars, and similar hazardous and unnecessary acts of omission or commission. If, however, management condones such practices, or, as in some instances, insists upon them, it must accept its share of responsibility for the accidents that inevitably result.Some of the most prolific sources of haulage accidents will be discussed briefly, together with the steps that may be taken to minimize their occurrence."

The Skorpion process comprises three processing steps-atmospheric leaching in sulfuric acid, zinc solvent extraction and electrowinning to produce special high grade zinc. The major mode of impurity transfer was attributed to crud runs in the solvent extraction circuit. Crud may be described as a heterogeneous, partly inorganic, partly organic mass of material which accumulates predominantly at the interface between organic and aqueous solutions. The paper describes the root causes of the crud formation in the solvent extraction circuit and optimization strategies which are being followed to prevent impurity excursions in electrowinning. "Steel slag has been stockpiled in many steel mills due to its poor performance in various construction related applications. Free lime in steel slag has been considered as a major barrier for its utilizations. Composite of steel slag and powders of granulated blast furnace slag have been found an excellent cementitious material for concrete. Portland cement is not required in this kind of concrete. Concretes with various amounts of steel slag and powders of granulated blast furnace slag additions have been investigated. Physical and chemical properties of the products were examined. High performance concrete can be obtained. Field testing of the concrete products was conducted for various applications, including buildings and pavements, and the results demonstrated the soundness of the concrete. Drill cores of field tested concrete, with ages up to 26 years, were examined for the microstructures under SEM.IntroductionIn the steel industry, a major source of the solid waste is steel slag. Steel slag has poor stability in construction applications. This is a major reason that only a small amount of steel slag has been utilized. Some of the reported applications include the land filling/creation in the sea, road base materials, soil treatment for acid neutralization and micronutrients supply, and sintering aid in the sintering plant of the steel industry [1].To solve the stability problem for using steel slag as construction materials, the common approach is to find a method capable of depressing or eliminating the expansion of steel slag. Free lime in steel slag is the major component that causes the expansion. Aging and hydration pretreatment of free lime in steel slag are the well known methods for increasing the steel slag stability. However, there has been limited success on these approaches due to that a large portion of free lime is locked in the grains during the pretreatment process."

The mechanism of cathodic decomposition of pyrrhotite was studied in deoxygenated solutions at natural, near neutral pH using potential and cyclic voltammetric measurements. Reaction products on pyrrhotite surfaces were examined by AES and XPS, and by analyzing the voltammograms for the electron balance of the reactions. Surface properties of the pyrrhotite/solution interface were characterized using ac impedance technique. The parameters of an equivalent circuit were determined by the nonlinear least squares fit (NLLSF) technique. The effect of cathodic polarization on floatability was investigated by micro-flotation tests. Possible implications to the flotation separation of chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite ores are discussed.

An earlier publication has discussed three methods lor obtaining relative permeability data on small core sample-: and the apparatus and technique for the capillary pressure displacement method. This paper describes the apparatus and technique for the solution gas and the dynamic displacement methods and presents a routine procedure for obtaining oil-gas and water-oil relative permeability data. Theoretical and experimental considerations are presented to show that the end effect commonly associated with the dynamic flow mechanism is extremely small where constant rates are employed in the flowing phase. An effect of flow rate on relative permeabilities obtained by the dynamic system is found only when gas is one of the flowing phases and this effect is ascribed to a form of channeling in the capillary system. The apparatus and procedure* used to obtain relative permeability data with three phases flowing are described and some preliminary results of the use of this method are shown. INTRODUCTION In a previous publication from this laboratory there appeared a brief discussion of the concepts behind three basic methods for obtaining relative permeability data.' These three methods were called the capillary pressure displacement method. the solution gas displacement method, and the dy. namic displacement method — the names being suggestive of the type of process used for obtaining the desired saturation prior to making the permeability measurements. In the same publication, the apparatus and technique for the capillary pressure displacement method were described and some typical results obtained by this method were presented. This paper will present: 1. The routine procedure used to obtain complete relative permeabilitv data (In small core samples with two phasec flowing; 2. The experimental techniques for the solution gas and dynamic displacement methods for obtaining relative permeability data; 3. The results of some studies on the mechanism of fluid flow through consolidated porous media; and, 4. The preliminary results on the determination of relative permeability for a system in which three phases are flowing. TECHNIQUE AND APPARATUS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF RELATIVE PERMEABILITY WITH TWO PHASES FLOWING In order to obtain relative permeability data on a small core sample which will describe the various phases of reservoir depletion. it is necessary that the methods used duplicate, as closely as possible, the various mechanisms involved in rescbrvoir depletion. It is important that. in any type of relative permedbility determination. the core be originally at virgin reservoir conditions with respect to the fluids within the pore *paces. (for example. oil used to displace water from core until connate water saturation estahlished). and that the subsequent saturation changes in the core be analagous to tile reservoir depletion mechanism for which the data are to he used. PROCEDURE OF DETERMINING RELATIVE PERMEABILITY DATA WITH TWO PHASES FLOWING A standardized procedure has been set up for obtaining relative permeability data and other information on small core samples. This procedure essentially consists of 11 steps as shown below: 1. Determination of tile capillary pressure curve.'! This information is used to help select samples for relative permeability determinations and to charactrrize. in general. the pore size distribution of the sample. 2. Determination of the specific permeabilities to air, oil. and water. These values are those on which the relative pern~eahility calculations are based. 3. Reduction of the core to connate water by an oil drive using the high speed centrifuge. 1. Determination of the critical gas saturation value and the associated relative permeability to oil by the solution gas drive method. 5. Determination of the relative permeabilities to oil and gab in the region where both phases are flowing by the capillary presqure method. 6. Reduction of the sample to residual oil in the centrifuge by an air drive. and the determination of the relative permeability to gas at this point.

INTRODUCTION More than five years have elapsed since the first shortwall panel was installed in a US mine in 1972. By the latest count, 11 mines have tried the shortwall method on 34 panels. Potentially, the shortwall method (see Figure 1) offers the combined advantages of longwall and continuous mlning. But just like any other mining method, shortwall is not a panacea. It is only applicable under a set of stringent conditions. Coal operators at eight of the eleven mines are satisfied with shortwall mining, though there are only five mines presently producing coal from shortwall panels.
