By confining the electrolytic reduction of TiCl4 to the interior of a porous basket-cathode the electrolyte between the anode and the cathode can be kept free of reduced chlorides of titanium eliminating undesirable reactions of reduced titanium chlorides with brickwork or oxygen in the cell atmosphere. Semiwalls are not needed. Operating conditions are given and discussed. Titanium yields based on TiCl4 introduced are 93 pct. Cell voltage and amperage characteristics are adaptable to multiple cathode-series cell urmngements. EXPERIMENTS conducted in the National Lead Co., Titanium Division, Research Laboratories showed that titanium metal could be deposited in an electrolytic cell in which titanium tetrachloride was introduced through a tubular cathode.' The reduced chlorides as formed were confined to the vicinity of the cathode. They were reduced to form a cocoon-shaped growth of sponge titanium metal at the end of the cathodic tube below the surface of a sodium chloride-strontium chloride electrolyte. No diaphragm was needed.' Although high-purity, coarse crystalline metal was produced in the cocoon growth, the yields of metal removed from the cell, based on the amount of titanium introduced as TiCl4, were usually only 40 to 60 pct. The growth of the cocoon deposits was away from the cathodic tube for introduction of TiC14 toward the anode following the flu lines. The reduced chlorides of titanium diffused through the deposit and were reduced to titanium electrolytically within the deposit or on the outer surfaces. Deposition within the pores of the cocoon was detrimental to further deposition because it plugged the passages used by the reduced chlorides to diffuse away from the point of titanium introduction. As plugging due to deposition in the pores proceeded, the reduced chlorides in the center of the cocoon would force their way out by forming a channel and would escape from the vicinity of the cathode without being reduced to metal. Some work had been done previously1, 2 which indicated that if the end of the cathodic tube for introducing TiC14 was surrounded by a screen connected to the tube so that it too was cathodic, growth could be made to occur within the screen. Direction of growth was observed to be from the screen toward the point of TiCl4 introduction. Through a series of design modifications a cathode evolved which consisted of an introduction tube surrounded by a perforated metal basket as shown in Fig. 1. Modifications of this design are described in Refs. 3, 4, and 5. This basic cathode designa" was incorporated in electrolytic cells containing graphite anodes and constructed of high-silica brick refractory for containing the electrolyte (see Fig. 2). The inner crucible was surrounded by insulating brick and the entire unit contained in a welded steel shell. Suitable cooling chambers with inert gas atmospheres were devised so that the cathode could be removed from the cell without exposing the deposit to air while hot. Various alkali and alkaline earth chlorides were used as electrolytes.

Respirable (PM-10) crystalline silica is regulated by the State of California as a carcinogen. The risk-management of this material by the State exemplifies the inherent problems in the development of regulations based on current risk-assessment practices. The influence of extremely conservative risk-assessment and risk-management can be expressed in economic impacts including the increased cost of production, reduced competition, increased prices, reduced employment and redistribution of income. This paper attempts to contrast theoretical risk- assessment and risk-management with current application using crystalline silica as an example. Based on health information pertaining to silica, the paper examines federal and State of California regulatory and public policy positions. Using current risk factors and empirical data for the Central Valley of California, the projected incidence of lung cancer in humans is examined. While such an analysis would project an extremely high incidence of lung cancer as well as silicosis, not a single case of either lung impairment has been recorded within the study area or throughout the world in the general population. This suggests that sound guidelines for the analysis of scientific information have given way to the assumption that virtually any information representing a substance as a carcinogen is to be considered valid with little or no qualification.

Jim Walter Resources, Inc. (JWR), has successfully longwall mined for many years at depths ranging from 1200'-2500'. However, full pillar extraction has proven difficult and generally economically unfeasible. Overburden and redistributed stresses at these depths require relatively large pillars, which become unmanageable with most pillar extraction practices. The economic benefits of taking gateroad pillars as part of a longwall face have been recognized for some time, including increased life of mine recovery, elimination of belt moves, reduced overcast requirements, and improved longwall to continuous miner ratios. Until recently, the associated risks of pulling pillars prevented any extensive use of this concept at JWR. Due to geological, economic, and longwall repeatability problems, JWR accepted the risks, and undertook pillar extractions with longwall faces in several different applications. The applications included taking a stable pillar (250' wide) as a longwall panel, taking yield pillars on the headgate and tailgate of panels, taking yield pillars and stable pillars in the middle of a panel, mining through chain pillars in the middle of a panel, and taking a support pillar on the tailgate end of a panel. This paper describes the background and experience of pillar extraction with longwalls at JWR.

Several interesting anecdotes are included along with the discussion of the evolution of coal mining methods in the area. Finally, some of the recently introduced equipment at Princess Colliery is described, and prospects for the future of the industry are outlined.

Flotation is regarded as the best available method of upgrading coal and mineral fines in the mining industry. However, its efficiency deteriorates rapidly with decreasing particle size. Furthermore, ultrafine concentrates are difficult to be dewatered economically. Due to these technological problems, some operators are forced to discard at least part of the ultrafine materials to tailings (or refuse) ponds, causing significant losses of valuable resources and creating environmental concerns. To address these technological issues, a new separation process named hydrophobic-hydrophilic separation has been developed on the basis of the recent advances in the science of hydrophobic interactions. The results obtained to date show that the process can recover and dewater ultrafine particles simultaneously with high separation efficiencies. Following a series of extensive laboratory tests, the process has been scaled up to proof-of-concept and pilot-scale continuous tests. The results obtained with desliming cyclone overflows, screenbowl effluents, and by-zero coal flotation feeds can be cleaned to less than 4% ash and moisture with over 97% organic matter (or coal) recoveries. The results obtained with mineral fines also showed encouraging results.

The commissioning of the pipeline is reviewed as well as current operating performance, including data on corrosion, pump parts life, and manpower requirements.

Marine Mining Inc. is currently exploring for marine alluvial gold and diamonds on a prospecting licence over a concession that covers 10,000 km2 of the continental shelf of Ghana. The boundaries of the concession extend from 0 30'W to 2 40'W, and between the shoreline and approximately the continental shelf edge north of 4 30'N. This concession extends from Kikam Beach in the west, to Senya Beraku in the east, a distance of approximately 240 km, and seaward an average of about 40 km. The concession is entirely underwater, with the exception of the estuaries of the Ankobra and Pra Rivers. Ghana has been a large source of alluvial gold, with historical production exceeding 25 million ounces. Southwestern Ghana is characterized by Precambrian rocks, which have been folded into a number of NE-SW trending synclines and anticlines. The most significant feature of the Birimian rocks is the presence of evenly spaced gold-bearing greenstone belts. They are 10-15 km wide, separated by about 90 km, separate basins filled by folded metasediments and granitoids. The rivers that enter the concession drain most of the exposed gold-bearing belts of Ghana. Given that approximately 2 km of erosion has taken place since the Mesozoic, and that gold mines on these belts boast proven reserves of over 55 million ounces, it is likely that large amounts of gold have been eroded out and carried to the sea. Coastal fractures, related to Precambrian structures reactivated during Mesozoic rifting, are responsible for the physiography of the coastal area, which consists of high-relief horsts separated by grabens that have been occupied and infilled by rivers or by finer sediments during times of elevated sea level. These fractures were loci of gold mineralization during the Precambrian, and are the source of alluvial gold in rivers confined by them.

Aiming at characteristics of the soft coal roadway engineering geology and deformation, the exposure research of the soft coal seam, theoretical analysis, numerical calculation and program design were carried out. First of all, according to the disclosure, soft coal seam engineering characteristics and geological conditions in Xinxing coal mine were expounded. Meanwhile, the soft coal roadway bolt supporting axial effect, the bolt supporting transverse effect, the anchorage body mechanics strengthening mechanism and problems such as supporting strength have been analyzed. The paper pointed out that the soft coal with very small cohesive force can form a composite anchorage body under the combined action of the anchor cable group, the W-type steel band and the metal net. The soft coal body in the plastic damage area formed anchorage balance arch with a certain bearing capacity and adapted to the rock deformation, and which played an effective support role in the roof outside the balance arch of the roadway. Therefore, the full-cable support technology was proposed. And then, numerical calculation and comparative analysis were conducted on three schemes of the roadway with non-support, with combined support of “anchor bolt and cable” and the full-cable support. The results show that when the roof is supported by anchor cable, it not only controls the continued increase of the subsidence value of the roof, but also effectively suppresses the convergence amount of the floor heave value and the amount on the sidewalls of the roadway. Whether it is from the stress distribution situation, or the viewpoint of plastic zone scope, the combined support of full-cable is more reasonable than that with non-support and that with the combined support of “anchor bolt and cable”. Finally, based on the features of soft coal seam in No.2265 work face of Xinxing coal mine, the relevant support schemes were put forward, and its specific support parameters and cross-section designs were drawn as well.

The haulage system employed to convey coal from the face to the outside, dates back to 300 B. C., when slaves carried the mineral from the face to the consumer. The British discovered coal on their island about 800 A. D. and they were the first people to make practical use of coal and make coal mining a successful operation. The Britons carried cargoes of coal in their trading expeditions long before Columbus discovered America. The early history of mine haulage in the British mines relates to women with baskets, a practice still in use in Korean mines. Coal was discovered in America in 1679. The first mine worked in the United States was opened at Richmond, Va., in 1770. The haulage inside consisted of a crude sled loaded with, sacked coal ready for the market and drawn by a mule. The tipple consisted of the very simple operation of loading the sacked coal to the back of a lame mule, which represented the transportation system between mine and boat. The capacity of the boat was one ton and this large production of coal was intrusted to a small boy, who delivered to any place in town his bushel basket filled' with winter fuel. One daring coal operator shipped fifteen tons of coal by boat to Philadelphia and the man in charge had to seek employment to pay his board while finding customers for his fuel. A production of five tons per day would hardly attract attention to any system of haulage, add three ciphers and the importance of mine haulage is made very plain to the management. I will consider a production between 3000 and 5000 tons in eight hours and endeavor to bring out the essential features necessary to make the haulage system a regulated precise factor. There are two phases to mine haulage, the mule trip from the room to the motor or gathering party and the main haul to the outside. The motive power, whether done by mule, wire-rope or electric motor cannot be effective if left to the power alone. Conditions must offer no obstacle and it is the removal of obstacles that make the haulage system. This paper will consider a flat seam with the usual jump ups and downs or natural obstacles to be met and mastered by the successful tail-rope or electric system. The pit car is no longer a screening system scattering the fine coal from the room to the outside, adding to the costs by giving employment to road cleaners and polluting the ventilating system with a fog of coal dust. Grain coarsening tests were carried out on AI-4.5 pct Cu and AI-4.5 pct Si alloys. The effects of three variables, melt composition, pour temperature, and mold temperature, were determined. It was found that the macrostructure generally coarsened with increased pour and mold temperatures. Coarsening was extreme in the unrefined alloys but was retarded by the active grain refiners like titanium and columbium. The effect of boron was spectacular in suppressing coarsening tendencies. The results of the investigation support the carbide theory of nucleation as opposed to the peritectic theory. A REVIEW of prior work on the subject of grain refinement in the light metals indicated that, for the most part, it had been concerned with the positive effects of addition agents upon structure. This work produced various theories of refinement. Prominent among them were the peritectic theory and the transition element carbide theory. Certain inadequacies in the former theory appeared to be explained satisfactorily by the transition element carbide theory. In order to appraise these theories further, a study was undertaken of the permanence of grain refinement effects when subjected to thermal or chemical variations. It was considered that a study of this kind would be of practical value, since the light metals are exposed to thermal and chemical variations in the normal course of foundry operations. Accordingly, two alloys of commercial importance were selected for this investigation, the A1-Cu and A1-Si alloys. Experimental Procedure and Results Raw Materials: The base alloys, A1-Cu and A1-Si, were prepared from virgin aluminum and hardeners, induction melted, and pigged for remelting. The grain refiners, including titanium, columbium, zirconium, and boron, were added as master alloys. Analyses of the raw materials and base alloys are listed in Table I. Melting and Casting Practice: The metals were melted in clay-graphite crucibles in a Hevi-Duty pit-type resistance furnace, equipped with a Leeds and Northrup Micromax Recorder and Controller. After melt down of the base alloys, the additions were made. For each casting, approximately 80 grams of metal were poured into a preheated graphite mold held in a transite flask. The mold (Fig. 1) weighed 320 grams. To determine the effect of superheat upon structure, a set of melts was heated successively to four temperature levels, 705°, 775°, 845°, and 915°C, and test specimens were cast at each level. Prior to each pour, the furnace temperature was held constant for 20 min. Next, a set of melts was put through a superheat cycle and test specimens were cast at melt temperatures of 705" and 915°C successively. The crucibles then were cooled in air to 705°C as deter-mined by immersion thermocouple and additional test specimens were poured. The cooling interval was approximately 1 min. Another set of melts was furnace cooled with the cover slightly ajar and test specimens cast as before. The interval in this case was 15 to 20 min, varying with the superheat temperature. The mold temperature for all these tests was 400°C. To determine the effect of cooling rate without superheat upon structure, a set of melts was heated to 705°C, and castings were poured at mold temperatures of 205", 400°, and 540°C. An interval of 15 min elapsed between each pour. Mold temperatures were measured by a direct reading millivolt-meter, using a chromel-alumel thermocouple located at midwall thickness of the mold. To demonstrate the phenomenon of chemical coarsening, agents such as chromium and beryllium, which had acted as coarseners in a previous investigation,' were added to the A1-Cu alloy. Test speci-

The conference will be held in lieu of the UCA’s biennial North American Tunneling Conference and will bring the strengths and resources of the UCA of SME and the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA). The result will be a conference with unmatched technical programming and a showcase of more than 200 exhibiting companies.A program committee led by Randy Essex of Mott MacDonald, Lonnie Jacobs of Frontier Kemper Constructors, Michael Mooney, of the Colorado School of Mines, Priscilla Nelson, of the Colorado School of Mines and Amanda Elioff of Parsons Brinkerhoff formed the program committee and worked for more than two years to build the program. The result is four technical sessions with five tracks in each session and 185 oral presentations.“One challenge was the sheer size of the group that would be assembled, perhaps 2,500 attendees or more, and the large number of abstracts we were likely to receive,” said Essex. “ We investigated extending the conference a fourth day, but that was not workable with the Moscone Center. Placer mineral deposits may exist in the nearshore and shelf regions off western Canada. These deposits could contain gold, ilmenite or zircon as well as sand and gravel aggregate. Two deposit types typical of the British Columbia offshore are: (l) modem and relict gold/titanium beach deposits; and (2) reworked relict titaniferous shelf deposits. The preservation of drowned beach heavy mineral concentrations resulted from a rapid relative sea level rise across the shallow shelves approximately 10 500 years ago, particularly off the Queen Charlotte Islands. This same transgression submerged an outwash fluvial system that had been exposed for at least 3200 years, draining areas of known gold placers.

This paper discusses the factors that influence the way rock bolts and cable bolts perform. It highlights the need to know how support efficiency varies in different ground conditions.

Liquid fuel oils possess certain advantages over solid fuels. Ease in handling, precision temperature control, and almost complete freedom from ash are among those considered when a liquid fuel is selected for use in industrial processing. In some instances these fuels are desirable because more heating units can e packed in a Given space where space is limited, as on snips. In other cases the' are chosen because of lower actual cost per British thermal unit absorbed, or for control of the flame to increase the capacity of furnaces, as in steel and refining.

The geology, mining, beneficiating, types of products, and costs in terms of percent of total costs and of labor, power, and supplies of two crushed- limestone operations in Madison County, Iowa, are described in this paper. The operations are basically similar, differing in refinements in mining, product types, and markets. The operations are comparable as to personnel and as to weighted costs in terms of percent of total costs and in terms of man-hours, power, and supplies. The waste-to-stone stripping ratio is 1 to 0.8 at both operations, the powder factor is 0.29 pound of explosives per ton of stone, and daily production is 95 tons per man-shift. Both companies use crawler-mounted diesel shovels for loading, truck transportation, wagon drills, and dry screening.

Introduction Considerable attention has of late been attracted to the area surrounding Nimpkish lake, on northern Vancouver island, by the discovery of important rich copper deposits. In less than two years some 200 mineral claims have been staked in a small area, and at least two groups have very promising surface showings. During the summer of 1929, the writer spent one month investigating the general geology and mineral deposits of the region, and, although no detailed work has as yet been done in the field or in the laboratory, the importance of the mineral discoveries and the lack of geological information available to the public warrants a preliminary paper on the district. The district is, from a mining viewpoint, very accessible. Boats from Vancouver call at Englewood, in Beaver cove, four times a week. From Englewood, a first-class logging railway, operated by the Wood, .English Company, extends to the northeast corner of Nimpkish lake. The fifteen-mile trip from the north to the south end of the lake is made by boat, two tugs being maintained by the logging company. The whole trip from Englewood can easily be made in one day. The known mineral deposits lie immediately east of the southern part of the lake, four miles or less from the shore. A fair trail, four miles ? long, leads from the lake to the Nimpkish Copper group. Apart from this trail and an old logging railway grade which follows the east side of Klaanch river for several miles, no trails exist on the southeast side of the lake.

The main constituents of flat glass are the eight commonest elements of the earth's crust. Five of these, silicon, sodium, calcium, magnesium and oxygen are essential. Two more, Aluminum and potassium have beneficial properties. For colorless glasses iron is undesirable, in standard clear glasses a small amount of iron is tolerable, while for most tinted glasses iron is essential. These elements are present in glass as oxides and because they are so common there is no foreseeable resource shortage. The availability of supplies of materials at particular sites at prices which enable a glass manufacturer to be competitive may be another matter. In this paper it is intended to provide a historical perspective to the current situation, to contrast some of the traditional North American and European practices, and to progressively review some of the driving forces for future change and to attempt to assess their effects upon both raw material supplier and consumer.

Passivation of Fe-Ni-Co alloys during the Caron leach process is thought to result in low cobalt recoveries in ammoniacal ammonium carbonate solutions. A brief review of the available thermochemical data for the (Fe, Ni, Co)-NH3-H2O systems has been undertaken. The stability of the Co(II) and Co(III), Ni(II) and Fe(II) ammines was examined through the use of speciation and Pourbaix diagrams at 298 and 333 K and at 6 M total ammonia. Increasing the temperature reduces the stability fields of the ammines and generally constrains the thermodynamic window for the leach. The Fe(II) ammines are only thermodynamically stable under reducing conditions. Polarization experiments show that these ammines are unlikely to form if oxygen is present. Fe-Ni-Co alloy passivation may be alleviated by careful management of potential.
