The Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota, commenced operations in 1876. As is the case with old, deep, continuously developing mines, a ventilation improvement is periodically required to maintain acceptable underground environmental conditions. Recent historical improvements at Homestake include a 5.2m diameter air shaft driven in the 1960's and a 2.1 MWR (580 ton) chilled water plant installed in 1978. By 1983, it became apparent that yet another ventilation upgrade would be needed to keep pace with accelerated development in the deepest mining sections. A study was therefore undertaken to project ventilation requirements for the next ten years and to select the method(s) most suitable to meet those requirements. The study called for a two-phase approach in which air flow and air conditioning were carefully balanced. Phase I, the installation of a new 2240 kW surface fan and several underground circuit changes, was completed in 1986. This paper describes Phase 11: the planning, design, installation and initial performance of the air-conditioning portion of the upgrade.

THE Pembina oil field is in west-central Alberta, about 88 miles west-southwest of Edmonton. The field, about 35 miles long by T HE Pembina oil field is in west-central Alberta, about 88 miles west-southwest of Edmonton. The field, about 35 miles long by 85 miles wide, is the largest in Canada in areal extent, in the amount of oil in place and in the current producing rate. The discovery well was completed in the middle of 1953. The field has grown until its present area is 369,820 acres. There are 74 working interest owners in the field. Early in the producing history of the Pembina field a committee of operators was formed on a permanent basis. The Pembina Operators' Committee has established a permanent staff, which compiles and distributes pertinent field information on a regular basis to all participants. This paper describes the use of a computer in analyzing the expected return on a mining venture. The computer program is designed to incorporate all aspects of a mining project, including the mine, mill, smelter, and refinery. Data input may consist of the operating variables in each phase such as the mining rate, grades, reserves at the mine, and the technical operating characteristics of the mine, mill, smelter, and refinery. Detailed tax computations are shown for a domestic operating company, for a foreign company and for a foreign subsidiary. In addition, the use of the various options that are available such as expense write-offs or deferments to create tax credits during preproduction years are considered, and its effect on the DCF. The program is also constructed to accommodate changes in metal prices, and escalation of capital requirements and operating costs. Output consists of profit and loss statements for entire projects using different methods of depreciation, cash flows, discounted cash flows, net present value and returns on investment. Returns on investment are computed for equity investment, total investment, and total investment less tax credits. Allowances are made for bank and guaranteed loans. Additional financial statements can be made for the following: a) A mine-mill segment with a concentrate selling schedule b) A mine-mill-smelter complex with a smelter product selling schedule c) Profitability of the smelter separately d) Profitability of the refinery separately

"This study investigates the dual function of a temperature responsive anionic co-polymer of poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) as a selective flocculant/flotation collector. PNIPAM is used for separating hematite from 50:50 mixtures of hematite and quartz, at a variety of particle sizes. The performance of PNIPAM in this system is compared to that of conventional flotation collectors: sodium oleate and sodium dodecyl sulfate. The results of the study demonstrate that anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C (above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST)) is the most effective flotation collector for hematite particles in the size range between 10 and 20 ¦m. This is attributed to the increased probability of both particle/bubble collision and particle/bubble attachment through the formation of hydrophobic hematite aggregates. Anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C also produced the highest hematite recoveries for very fine hematite particles (circa 1 ¦m). However this recovery was completely unselective. This lack of selectivity is partially attributed to the activation of quartz particles by PNIPAM, but is thought to mainly occur as a result of entrapment of quartz particles within the matrix of hematite aggregates.CITATION:Forbes, E and Franks, G V, 2013. The paper presents a geotechnical simulation of the "Mavropigi" open pit mine (Western Macedonia Lignite Center, Greece), using the finite element method. The simulation was based on the initial planning of the pit using Mohr-Coulomb and Soil Hardening models. Results indicate high stability factors as well as the magnitude of the expected horizontal displacements and floor heaving. However, these deformations do not influence decisively the overall stability unless locally adverse tectonics are encountered. Results can be used in the ongoing update of mine planning and stability evaluation.

The environmentally acceptable disposal of fine-particled mining and industrial wastes by the formation of hydraulic- fill slimes dams is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the total mining endeavour. Relatively little is known of the behaviour of waste slurries during deposition. With the expansion of copper leaching of the various mine wastes at the Kennecott properties, additional copper recovery facilities have been required. A research and development program has been pursued to determine a suitable economic approach to the processing of the additional leach solutions contemplated. lnvestigations on laboratory and pilot plant scales covered electrowinning, solvent extraction, launder and vat type cells, activated launders, precipitation drums, and precipitation cones. This paper contains information on the development and use of a new precipitation-cone-type copper recovery plant, which provides many advantages over older systems. The application of research findings to the old art of leaching copper from copper-bearing mine waste has resulted in a significant contribution of copper to over-all copper production. For example, at the completion of the current expansion program at the Kennecott properties in the United States, copper produced from waste dump leaching will amount to about 25% of the total production. Formerly only 2% was derived from this source. This planned expansion of copper leaching focused attention on the problem of developing more efficient methods for the recovery of copper from greatly increased volumes of copper-bearing solutions.1 The detailed investigations which have been made in laboratory pilot plant and plant tests for the recovery of copper from copper-bearing solutions have included electrowinning, solvent extraction, ion exchange and cementation with iron in launders, precipitation drums, activated launders, and precipitation cones. The results of these investigations have led to the development of a new precipitation cone-type copper recovery system providing many advantages over older methods. ELECTROWINNING OF COPPER FROM COPPER-BEARING SOLUTIONS The direct electrowinning of copper from relatively dilute solutions of copper-bearing mine water, namely solutions containing 10 to 20 lbs of copper per 1000 gal, has always been an attractive possibility.2,3 By this method, high-purity copper powder can be recovered with a power consumption of 3.5 kwh per Ib of copper. Benson Mines low-grade iron ore reserve is a replacement deposit within the Grenville gneisses of the Adirondacks. The average grade of the crude ore is about 23 per cent iron. The iron minerals are principally magnetite and hematite disseminated throughout the gneisses as discrete grains about 1 mm in size. Both the ores that are beneficiated by magnetic means and the non-magnetic ores that are treated by a gravity method of concentration are found in stratigraphically different positions but are mined from one open pit, which is about 2.5 miles long and 800 feet wide and are treated separately. The gneisses are described and named according to the distinctive mineralogy of each. Recognition of the gneissic types permits the interpretation of the structure as a northward-plunging syncline overturned to the west. A large subsidiary anticline-syncline complex occurs on the east limb of the major syncline. Iron minerals in sufficient quantity to be considered ore are confined to areas where the footwall rock has been overturned to become the hanging wall.

This paper deals with theoretical considerations and practical applications of ventilation network calculations, based on mass flow rates and performed by computer simulation in our deepest operating mine - Creighton. The paper also deals with natural ventilation. In the usually accepted air-flow theory, the air is assumed to behave like an incompresssible medium. This introduces considerable error where temperature and pressure changes are great. Therefore, any study of the air flow in deep mines, must take into account compressibility. Basing ventilation calculations on mass flow allows a distinction to be made between air leakage and such quantity changes which occur due to air density changes. The energy which is required to convey one pound of air through a mine can be obtained by adding all head losses hL (ft-lb) of the ventilation paths through which the air flows. However, this total energy will not be correctly expressed in a compressible fluid by summing all pressure losses PL = hL x d (ft-lb/ft3 = lb/ft2) d = density. There is a law of mass conservation, but no law of volume conservation. Natural ventilation is caused by the conversion of heat into mechanical energy and not by the difference in upcast and downcast densities, as often believed. In an existing mine natural ventilation can be determined correctly by plotting a pressure volume diagram and measuring the area ? [ ] vdP = hN, where v = specific volume, or by measuring the sum of all friction losses and work provided by a fan. These procedures are tedious. The natural ventilation head (hN) can be approximated by the equaticn hN =[ ] tdZ. Where T is the average absolute temperature, t air temperature and Z elevation. In Prof. R. Greuer's computer program this determination of hN is automatically done for every mesh of the network.

The petroleum-refining industry established a. new record in fuel effieciency at refineries in 1936, when 597,000 B. t. u. of heat mere required to refine a barrel of crude oil, compared with an average of 615,000 B. t. u. in 1935 (see fig. 1). The principal factor in the 'indicated gain in fuel efficiency at refineries in 1936 was an increase in crude runs of 11 percent over 1935. A large part of the heat utilized at refineries is consumed elsewhere than under stills, or in ways quite independent of crude-oil distillation. In other words, as the operating ratio ( crude runs divided by capacity) for re- fineries increases toward tine maximum of 100 percent, the fuel requirements show progressively smaller increases and the average B. t. u. consumption per barrel of crude refined declines.

"An underground reservoir was to be constructed at Doha in Qatar. Simsima lime stone is present at the bottom. When the reservoir is empty, there will be uplift at the bottom but this will change to downward load when it is full. The rock at the bottom had high bearing capacity to resist downward load. But uplift had to be resisted by piles or anchors. The reservoir has a size of 120mx80m. Shrinkage and creep of concrete coupled with thermal contraction imposed a horizontal movement of 26mm on the extreme piles. So, piles have to accommodate this as well. This unique situation needed a unique solution. The solution was to provide piles with flexible high tensile strands to take tension. An annular space near the head of the pile would facilitate horizontal movement as well. Compression load was directly passed on to the raft bearing on rock.INTRODUCTIONAn underground reservoir for storage of drinking water was to be constructed at Doha, Qatar. The reservoir was proposed to have a plan size of 120m x 80m. Clear height inside the reservoir was proposed as 17.2m, from the bottom of roof to the top of bottom raft. Overall height of the reservoir at the outlet from the top of the roof to the bottom of raft was to be 21.2m. For the sake of inspection and in order to prevent pollution from the surroundings a gallery was planned around the reservoir. This could accommodate pipelines as well. This gallery was 3.0m wide on three sides and 8.4m wide on the outlet side.The gallery had removable gratings as cover in order to facilitate maintenance. Capacity of the reservoirwas proposed to be 40million gallons. The reservoir is divided into four compartments with baffle walls in each one for water circulation. Roof of the reservoir is kept at 300mm above ground level. There are two levels of car park on top of the reservoir. Top of the reservoir roof is at +14.35. Bottom varies from - 6.68 to -7.08. Lowest water table is at +6.00. Concrete structure of the reservoir was designed by a local consultant. The Navayuga Engineering Company was entrusted with the construction. This paper describes experimental investigations into the reductive decomposition of arsenopyrite/pyrite (FeAsS/FeS2), a gold and silver bearing iron/arsenic sulphide using metallic iron powder. The main objective was to establish and experimentally confirm the thermodynamic and kinetic feasibility of reductively decomposing the sulphide matrix for precious metals recovery. In this context, cyanidation leach tests were conducted on the reductive leach residues. The arsenopyrite/pyrite flotation concentrate, mainly studied in the hydrochloric acid medium, decomposed through the non?oxidative chemical dissolution reaction and the reductive decomposition reaction for the arsenopyrite and pyrite components, respectively. Desulphurization levels below 65% were achieved at pH values below 0.15 and iron to concentrate ratios above 1, and the system was characterized by overall very slow kinetics. The reaction system had a direct linear relationship with iron to concentrate ratio and an inverse relationship with pH. An analysis of the pyrite/iron galvanic system showed that pyrite forms a partially inert cathodic surface on which the anodic dissolution of iron occurs, supported by the hydrogen evolution reaction. This phenomenon explained the low desulphurization levels and the mineral decomposition seemed to be restricted to the non?oxidative chemical dissolution reaction for the arsenopyrite component. The cyanide leach of the reductive leach residues showed very little improvement in gold recovery. The reductive leach process for arsenopyrite/pyrite has considerable limitations in terms of both desulphurization and precious metals liberation. An approximate rapid design system for tunnel liners and underground structures is presented which permits the effects of structure geometry and stiffness, rock quality in terms of its deformation modulus, and the applied system loading to be entered as data to produce direct designs conforming to stress limitations, optimum reinforcement requirements and restraints on section dimensions. An 'equivalent column' concept is introduced for modelling the rock mass in contact with the structure. Only the rock treatment is given in detail but the results of sensitivity analyses, with reference to rock quality, for a typical liner design are given and these results related to a number of empirical design approaches.

Mining legislation in Jamaica dates back to only 1947 when, on August 30 of that year the Minerals (Vesting) Act was promulgated. None of the exploratory and trial-mining projects over the preceding 450 years were regulated or controlled by law. It was the seriousness of the intent of the North American Aluminum Companies to establish a bauxite mining industry in Jamaica which led to the development of the first piece of mineral legislation. It is of note that the incoming mineral industrialist was more anxious than the Government to see that a legislative framework was in place. It was relevant then as it is today for good mining legislation to be in place for the Government to regulate and control the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources. It was also necessary for the industry to know their rights and obligations so that they could plan, explore and exploit with some assurance that their capital was secure. One of the main reasons that the mining of bauxite did not begin in Jamaica until 1952 was that no legislational framework existed prior to 1947. The Jamaican dollar is tied to the US Dollar at a rate of J$35.00 to US$1.

The theory of electrophoresis is briefly outlined and an apparatus which may be used for electrophoretic studies is explained. The results obtained using this apparatus are in agreement with those obtained by other investigators. How to solve some of the complications which occur in the measurement of zero charge and zeta potential is explained. It is believed that the apparatus described in this paper will allow rapid measurements of zeta potential, zero point of charge, electrophoretic mobility and zeta coefficient. For many years the phenomenon of electrophoresis has been studied, and much work has been done in designing an apparatus for better measurements of mobility, zeta potential and zero charge of minerals. Up to the present, most electrophoresis experiments have involved cumbersome equipment and tedious microscopic observation. The modified cell proposed in this paper obviates these drawbacks by using a Rayoscope together with a special system of lenses and filters. It therefore allows a faster and more accurate measurement of zero charge and particle velocity. THEORY Most authors currently regard zeta potential as the potential difference in an otherwise uniform medium between a point some large distance from the surface of the mineral and a point on the plane of shear. Fuerstenau,1 Miaw,2 and Gaudin and sun3 have performed some calculations of zeta potential using Henry's equation.4 Their results show wide discrepancies, probably due to differences in the past histories of the minerals used. The authors have also noticed this difference on determining the zero point of charge of quartz as shown on Table I.

In safety work a study of past accidents is of value in determining means of reducing future accidents of the same character. This is particularly true with reference to coal-mine explosions. Data from publications of the United States Bureau of Mines and from published reports of the State inspector of coal mines of Colorado are presented in this circular in the belief that they will be of value to operators by indicating methods of preventing future coal-mine explosions. The tables included are complete only with regard to major disasters. The Bureau of Mines considers as a major disaster one in which five 'or more men are killed. However, this circular also includes a considerable number of minor disasters, Various explosions in the coal mines of Colorado from 1883 to 1932, inclusive, are listed with information available as to their probable cause, number of men killed and measures which, if they had been in use at that time, might have prevented them. John McNeil, first Colorado State coal-mine inspector, on page 43 of his first report for the period ended July 31, 1884, made the following recommendations for the prevention of explosions in the coal industry: True causes could be traced either to insufficient ventilation, carelessness and lack of rigid discipline in carrying on energetic ventilation and other precautions needed to be enforced in a mine giving off explosive gases. *** When any quantity of fine coal dust is observed in an entry, air course, or room it should be made damp and be removed from the mine, and thus beep every place as free from dust as possible. *** A system of bratticing close up to the face of each and every place in the mine from crosscut last made (whether gas should just then show its presence or not) which should not be more than 50 or 75 feet according to the nature of the mine.
