Georgia, since 1829, has produced nearly $18,000,000 from her gold mines, but in late years the output has dwindled to insignificance. In view of present universal efforts to increase gold production, it seems pertinent to record some recent observations in that field, briefly review its past and weigh probabilities of reviving gold mining there. Little in this paper can be claimed as new or original, and it does not present results of a detailed or profound investigation of the whole region. The Allatoona gold mine was reopened in January, 1932, and explored at greater depth during the period from January to June of that year. A number of other abandoned mines were visited, but since the workings, in common with most such mines in Georgia, were flooded or caved, underground conditions could not be examined. For a wider knowledge of the subject, a search was made through available pertinent literature and statistics, a bibliography of which is appended hereto. To all the sources obligations are gratefully acknowledged. Production The discovery of gold in Georgia, in 1829, led to an influx of 6000 to 7000 miners and a production of over $200,000 in the following year. A branch of the United States Mint, established at Dahlonega in 1838, accounted for $6,115,569 up to the time of the Civil War. The output fluctuated greatly from year to year, with an all-time peak of $582,782 in 1843. In only one other year, 1845, was the half million mark exceeded. After the war mining began again, but 1883 is the last year for which an output of $200,000 is reported. Placers, always the main source of production, were yielding less and less, and in spite of increased quartz-mining activities the downward trend continued. The last year in which there was a production of $100,000 was 1902. In 1914, $16,270 came from 26 placers and 11 deep mines, with the latter reporting 1750 tons of $3 average value. In 1925, one placer and four lode mines that mined 8100 tons assaying $1.19 per ton produced $9500. One placer and one quartz mine, operating in 1930, reported a total output of $4194. Table 1 pictures the waning output.

Increasing attention is being focussed worldwide on the strategic environmental assessment of mining projects, including consideration of cumulative environmental effects. In New Zealand there is now an end in sight for inappropriate delays in resource consent approval of responsible mining projects. This paper investigates six case examples of recently consented mining and quarrying projects, whose applications were notified. It also explores the nature of delays that occurred, the factors that contributed to the delays, and whether the consent process delivered fair and effective public participation and desirable environmental outcomes.

among uranium alloy systems are the U-Zr, U-Ti,and U-Mo binary systems, in that an intermediate phase, of limited solubility range, exists in each system. These intermediate phase alloys offer a promising field of investigation, both as binary alloys and as ternary alloy combinations. While a limited amount of work has been done on the binary alloys, none has been done on ternary combinations of these alloys. As a possible prelude to more intensive investigation of these systems, a study of the phase relationships between the 6 phases of the U-Zr and U-Ti systems was undertaken. The solid-state portions of the binary constitutional diagrams for the U-Ti,1 Zr-Ti,2 and U-Zr3 systems are shown in Fig. 1. The solid to liquid transformations are not shown, as these transformations were not studied in the ternary system. The phase designations employed are based upon those shown in the uranium constitutional diagrams. The crystal structures of the various phases are given in Table I. Experimental Materials and Methods The ternary section presented is based upon the results of thermal, metallographic, and X-ray analyses of a series of alloys ranging in composition between the phases of the U-Zr and U-Ti systems (U-74 atomic pct Zr to U-35 atomic pct Ti). After preparation of the alloys, thermal data were obtained. On the basis of these data, specimens were heat treated and examined metallographically. Specimens were then selected from those heat treated for X-ray determination of the phases present in what were considered critical phase regions. Alloy and Specimen Preparation—Alloys for this investigation were prepared from selected as-reduced uranium and crystal-bar zirconium and titanium. For nominal compositions, see Table 11. Charges were arc melted from five to seven times under a helium atmosphere, finally being cast into wire-bar form for fabrication. A zirconium getter button was used to clean the furnace atmosphere prior to melting. The alloys were homogenized 20 hr at 900 °C and furnace cooled. A portion of each bar was then removed for thermal analysis; the remainder was saved for fabrication. Alloys 8 through 14 were placed in steel tubes along with zirconium getter chips and, after flushing with argon, the tubes were welded shut and rolled at 1500 °F to a 50 pct reduction in diam. The remaining alloys were annealed 24 hr at ll00°F to insure transformation of the ? phase to the 8-U2Ti phase and were then hot rolled from a salt bath. Attempts to roll alloys 6 and 7 at 1100 °F were unsuccessful. Following this, attempts were made to roll pieces of alloys 1 through 5, which had cracked rather severely during casting, at 1200 °F, but these efforts were also unsuccessful. These alloys were, therefore, further treated in their cast and homogenized condition. All alloys were pickled to remove oxide formed during rolling. Thermal data were obtained on these alloys by conventional differential thermal analysis at a heating rate of 30C per min, and by a high-speed heating method at rates of approximately 10°C per sec. Equipment and continuous casting technology for the production of small diameter copper rods and tubes are described. Industrial copper wastes, such as scrap and shavings, were used as the charge. An electron-beam installation for rod and tube production includes a crucible with an electromagnetic stirring system and a pouring hole in its bottom, a bottomless mold, .and a special cooling system, which includes an oil and water cooling devices. For the first time in the electron-beam technology, rods of 8 mm and 14 mm diameter mm tubes of 14 mm external diameter and 7 mm internal diameter were produced through continuous casting by pulling them out of the vacuum chamder into the atmosphere with depressurizing the vacuum chamber. The production capacity of a single strand continuous casting machine was 200 mm/tnin for rod casting and 150 mm/min for tube casting.

The effect of pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, realgar and arsenopyrite on gold dissolution in cyanide media was investigated. The cyanidation of synthetic gold ores, in the presence of various concentrations of sulphides, was studied under constant experimental conditions. A mineralogical analysis of the minerals was performed. The leaching kinetics were determined. The negative effect of sulphides on the gold dissolution rate varies with the sulphide mineral, and decreases according to the following order: realgar > pyrrhotite > chalcopyrite > pyrite > arsenopyrite. The chemical characterization of gold and sulphide minerals surfaces using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was undertaken to identify the mechanisms involved. XPS analysis showed that a passivation layer of sulphides, arsenic or iron compounds may form on the gold surface as a result of the dissolution of the sulphide minerals.

The presence of long-lived radionuclides presents a challenge to the management of radioactive wastes. Separation of the radionuclides from the waste solutions has the potential of significantly decreasing the costs associated with the immobilization and disposal of the waste by minimizing waste volumes. Several solvent extraction processes have been developed at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory for the separation of transuranic elements (TRUs), 90 Sr, and/or 137 Cs from acidic radioactive waste solutions. The TRUEX and POR processes for the separation of TRUs, the SREX process for the separation of 90Sr, the cobalt dicarbollide process for the separation of 137Cs and and a universal solvent extraction process for the simultaneous separation of TRUs, 90Sr, and 137Cs have all been developed in centrifugal contactors using actual liquid radioactive waste solutions and simulated dissolved calcine waste solution. In addition, the behavior of metals with each of the solvent extraction processes was evaluated. This article summarizes the most recent results of the each of the flowsheet demonstrations and provides Information on the centrifugal contactor equipment used for the testing.

This article gives an account of the latest developments in the use of TBE for sink-float separation of silicate minerals. A number of minerals for which the process has been tested and found suitable are reviewed. Specific examples are discussed in relation to the particular problems of sink-float separation and recovery of TBE as compared with non-silicate minerals. The economic aspects are outlined. Silica and silicates comprise the most common and abundant group of minerals, and since they are present in variable amounts in most ores, they constitute an appropriate subject for the review and discussion of the recent developments in the use of TBE for mineral concentration. The silicates considered as a group have an extremely wide range of chemical and physical properties. Some of these properties, which are common to all minerals, are of importance to concentration by TBE and are discussed in some detail in this paper, as well as the development of methods and apparatus for concentration and recovery of TBE and several examples of concentration of silicates. PROPERTIES OF MINERALS WITH RESPECT TO CONCENTRATION BY TBE The properties considered as most important to concentration by TBE are specific gravity, structure, surface and shape. The specific gravity of a mineral is a fundamental property and is constant between very close limits for the same species of different sources if particles are pure and free from cavities or cracks. In many species, however, solid inclusions and changes in chemical composition due to replacement of elements cause variations in the specific gravity. The plagio-clase series of feldspars between albite and anorthite illustrate this point (specific gravity from 2.60 to 2.77). Fig. 1 shows the specific gravity distribution of some of the common silicate minerals.' The highest specific gravity is about 4.7 (zircon) and the lowest is 2.0 (sepiolite), with most of them ranging between 2.6 and 3.5. Although most of the silicates given in Fig. 1 are found as constituents of rocks, those generally considered as rock making minerals are comparatively few. They include quartz, feldspars, nephelite, sodalite, leucite, mica, pyroxenes, amphiboles, chrysolite, kaolin, talc and serpentine. These minerals may appear in igneous rocks as coarse crystals in granites, syenites and diorites or as very fine grained dispersions in basalt and felsite. When the latter rocks occur in an ore, their specific gravities depend on the minerals present and structure. The same is true for the sedimentary and metamorphic rocks (sandstones, shales, gneiss, slate, schists). A comparison of specific gravities for the minerals listed in Fig. 1 with that of TBE (see Table I) shows that the important rock-forming minerals, with the exception of pyroxenes, amphiboles and chrysolite (olivine), lie in the specific gravity range of less than 2.96 and can therefore be separated by TBE. "On January 15, 1920, a man was killed by falling rock in a limestone quarry in Utah. The quarry was visited by a representative of the Industrial Commission of Utah, and the cause of the accident was carefully determined. The facts concerning this accident, and the Bureau's recommendations are given in some detail in the hope that quarrymen may take steps to avoid dangerous conditions, and thus reduce the liability to accident.The quarry rock face is about 180 feet high, and the ledge is covered with an overburden of 10 to 20 feet of a mixture of soil and boulder. The rock face is not vertical, but slants at an angle of about 45° to 50°, while the stripping face stands at an angle of 70° to 80°, and is flush with the rock face. The conditions are shown in the accompanying figure.The man who was killed was employed in breaking rock at the foot of the quarry wall. The sun had been shining on the stripping face, and probably thawed the ground, thus permitting a boulder weighing about 20 pounds to roll down the slanting face, striking, and almost instantly killing the workman who was working with his back toward the quarry wall."

The principles of quality management are well developed and, from a practical stand- point, thoroughly implemented in the process industries of Japan. Although these principles are now applied to the U.S. manufacturing industry, and as a result, the steel industry, they have been largely ignored in the non-ferrous and precious metals industries. This paper presents the concepts and practical approaches to implement a total quality management program. Contrary to the beliefs of many managers, such a program increases yields, recoveries and output while it decreases unit costs. In fact, quality management incorporating statistical process control will be an essential ingredient for metallurgical plants to effectively compete in the '90's.

Bond (Consulting Engineer, Processing Machinery Dept., Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Milwaukee, Wis.) — Papers such as this one which deal in a lucid manner with the obscure fundamentals of comminution theory are always welcome. The author has attempted to bring together several diverse theories and handles them interestingly. However, some of the ideas expressed and conclusions drawn require critical reviewing, for which amenities alone will not suffice. The author points out that the theoretical energy required to break across crystal lattices is of the order of 1000 times the actual energy required to crush or grind, and that this energy in turn is perhaps 1000 times the measured surface energy of the new surface area produced. The energy required to grind commercially is controlled by flaws and dislocations, rather than by the inner strength of the lattice structure. The measured surface energy is only a slight residue left after the face atoms are adjusted to their new environment. Someone some time ago remarked that some chemists still insist on telling us how to determine copper by the electrolytic method. The writer must confess that he believes that everything is not known definitely as yet as to how the exact amount of copper is determined in such material as purest commercial electrolytic copper. Some of us are not yet convinced that the pure copper atom is at all times deposited from an acid solution and that no oxygen or hydrogen will, under certain conditions, accompany it. Difficulties with impurer material are frequent, but erroneous results are not always apparent, since these do not speak so readily for themselves as those in the first case. By this is meant that if a chemist finds 100 per cent. of copper in electrolytic copper it is pretty certain that he perceives the result to be wrong, while if he finds 0.1 per cent. of copper too much in a very impure material he is far more likely to be unconscious of his error. These, in a wide experience, are frequent happenings and the writer has always looked with interest to publications on this subject. In turn, he feels justified in giving to others a few of his own observations. Up to a few years ago there were two methods of electrolytic copper assay in technical use, which had in common, that the amount of copper deposited on the cathode did not exceed 2 g., and they differed in that, for the one a large sample1 (20 to 80 g.) was taken from the general sample by a splitting device, dissolved, and from the solution a small portion (to contain 1 or 2 g. of copper) measured out for the electrolytic deposition; in the other method the copper was determined, generally in 1-g. portions of the separated coarse and fine portions of the sample, all of which passed a 16 or 20-mesh screen, being accomplished by a 40-mesh screen,

Criteria for nucleation with the aid of twin planes during crystal growth from the melt are discussed. It is shown experimentally that bismuth crystals can grow from a subercooled melt in a twinned bismdtic form. A mechanism of growth based on the presence of at least me twin plane is proposed. It is well known that faceted growth can be observed in crystals grown from the vapor phase, dilute solutions, or from the melt. Faceted growth, in which the crystal is bounded by its slowest growing faces, will occur if the growth rate is strongly orientation dependent. The addition of atom layers on a facet plane can only occur by two-dimensional surface nucleation or with the aid of an imperfection. Nucleation with the aid of dislocations was proposed by rank' and observed to be of particular importance in crystal growth from the vapor phase. Nucleation with the aid of two-dimensional imperfections, notably twin planes, was suggested by stranski2,3 and Frank.4 A twin plane, terminating at the growth interface, can form a reentrant step at which nucleation can occur at a much smaller super-saturation (or supercooling) than required for two-dimensional surface nucleation. Nucleation by a twin plane usually results in a fast growth rate along a crystallographic direction parallel to the twin plane. Such a nucleation mechanism, based on the presence of a twin plane, has been used by Dawson5 to explain the growth and morphology of sheet-like crystals of paraffin n-hectane. In recent years more evidence was found that nucleation by twin planes occurs frequently in crystal growth from the vapor phase and from dilute solutions, for example, in cadmium,' barium titanate,7 silver,8 silicon9 and gallium arsenide.10 In crystal growth from a supercooled melt, however, nucleation by twin planes has so far only been observed in materials with the diamond or zinc blende structure. Bennett and Longini11 were the first to recognize the important role a single twin plane plays in the growth of germanium dendrites. Subsequently, it was found that a prerequisite for continued propagation of germanium dendrites is the presence of two parallel twin planes which form a self-perpetuating system of nucleation sites.12 Sili- con and some III-V compounds such as InSb also grow dendritically by twin plane nucleation. It appears that the following criteria must be satisfied in order that nucleation with the aid of twin planes can occur: A) The growth form of the material must be faceted." B) The formation of twin boundaries, by a fault in layer sequence during growth, by plastic deformation, or by an accidental meeting of properly oriented crystals, must be possible. C) Twinning must form a reentrant step where the twin boundary terminates at the faceted growth interface. D) These three conditions are necessary, but in certain cases not sufficient for continued crystal growth with the aid of a twin plane. Depending on interface morphology, a combination of more twin planes is sometimes required to form a self-perpetuating system of nucleation sites. This investigation was carried out with the idea in mind that nucleation with the aid of twin planes is a more general phenomenon and should occur in those materials, grown from a supercooled melt, which satisfy the criteria outlined above. It has been found that crystals of high-purity bismuth grown from a supercooled melt can grow by the aid of a twin plane. In the first two sections the faceted growth form and the twinning elements of bismuth are discussed. In the last section prismatic crystals of bismuth, which appear to grow with the aid of a deformation twin are discussed.

In any event, powder metallurgy is expanding at high speed and making an important impact on the production of iron and steel products. Some indication of the faith in the future market may be indicated by the commencement of three new powder production plants in Canada with a total capacity of 136,000 tons annually."

Equations representing the standard free energy of formation as a function of temperature, for thirty metallic chlorides, are presented and plotted on a free-energy vs. temperature diagram. The use of these data for calculations on reduction of metallic chlorides, refining of metals with chlorine, and chlorination of metallic oxides and sulphides is illustrated. CHLORINE metallurgy' has attracted metallur- gists for more than a century because the unusual properties of the metallic chlorides—low melting point, high volatility, and ease of formation from the oxides—make possible many useful extractive processes. Interest in chlorine processes is undergoing a renaissance due to present availability of chlorine at relatively low prices, and to recent advances in technology. During the present century there have accumulated a considerable number of reliable values of the thermodynamic constants for the metals and their chlorides. These data permit the calculation of free-energy equations for many metallurgically important reactions. Consideration of free-energy values makes possible certain predictions of the direction and extent of a given reaction, as well as the effect of temperature, pressure, and composition upon the result. Reaction rate, although not predictable from free-energy data, is usually sufficiently great at elevated temperatures that diffusion of the reactants and products to and from the zone of reaction determines the actual rate. Thus, if the free-energy indication is favorable, the chances are good that a high temperature metallurgical reaction will proceed at a reasonable rate, if adequate provision for rapid diffusion has been made. This paper presents standard free-energy equations for a number of metallic chlorides, based on data which are scattered throughout the literature. The equations are presented in a form that simplifies their use, and typical examples are given of the application of free-energy data to metallurgical processes. Free Energy of Reaction The free-energy change (AG) of a reaction is the true measure of the "driving force" of the reaction under a given set of conditions, and this is related to the standard free-energy change (AGO) of the reaction as follows: For the reaction: bB + cC = dD + eE ?G = ?G°+RTln ADd. ACc where A, = activity of constituent (i) T = absolute temperature, OK R = gas constant The criterion of a spontaneous reaction from left to right, at constant temperature and pressure, is a negative value for the free-energy change (?G). The standard free energy of the reaction is equal to the free energy of the reaction when all the reactants and products are at unit activity, since under these conditions the second term on the right-hand side of eq 1 is equal to zero. The concept of activity is treated fully in many textbooks on chemical thermodynamics1 and in a recent article by Chipman.2 Briefly, the activity (A,) of a constituent (i) is a measure of the reactivity of this constituent relative to its reactivity in some arbitrary standard state. For liquids and solids the standard state most often used is the pure liquid or solid constituent. Thus the activity of a pure liquid or solid in a metallurgical reaction is equal to unity. Gases under moderate pressure and at elevated temperatures behave very nearly as 'idea1 gases,' and the standard state is chosen as the gas at 1 atm pressure. The activity of an ideal gas is therefore equal to its partial pressure, and this relation is sufficiently exact for real gases in most metallurgical reactions. For a liquid or solid solution there is in general no simple way to express the activity of a constituent as a function of its concentration, and activity must be determined by experiment. A few solutions follow a so-called 'ideal' behavior, and if the pure constituent is chosen as the standard state, the activity of a constituent in an ideal solution becomes equal to its mol fraction. When a reaction reaches a state of thermodynamic equilibrium at constant temperature and pressure, AG becomes equal to zero and eq 1 reduces to: [ADd . AEe ?G°=RTln Abb ¦ Ac c equilibrium [2] The brackets surrounding the activity term are used to emphasize that each of the activities is an activity under equilibrium conditions—not just any arbitrarily assigned value. The bracketed term is the equilibrium constant (K) of the reaction. Eq 2 makes possible the calculation of equilibrium activities for a given reaction, if AGO is known at the desired temperature. The standard free-energy equations presented in this paper were calculated from the fundamental thermodynamic values of enthalpy of formation at 298°K (AH°,), standard entropy at 298°K (So298), heat capacity as a function of temperature (Cp), and enthalpies of transition, fusion, vaporization, and sublimation for the various constituents. Where possible the data reported in the recent "Selected Values of Chemical Thermodynamic Properties," published by the Bureau of Standards," were used. Nonmetallic rock and mineral products are so diversified that any generalizations regarding the industries based upon them are of doubtful value and can be misleading. They are geared to every phase of the national economy and respond sensitively and immediately to any economic change, but the responses vary with the individual products. They are also affected by political and competitive factors to a degree that is disconcerting and, at times, ruinous to operators, owners, and stockholders of mineral properties. It is not unusual to find these special factors functioning in reverse of general trends insofar as individual products are concerned. As this summary is being written in the final weeks of 1949 production statistics for the year are not complete, but it is obvious that few, if any, new production records will be set, and that 1949 level, will, in general, be lower than those of 1948. The decline in output is not alarming and reflects in large part the tendency of users, who have been finding sources of supply more dependable to rely on prompt deliveries rather than on inventories to meet immediate needs. Except for the government's program of stock piling which, insofar as it has worked at all, is of more direct interest and benefit to foreign than to domestic producers, industrial inventories have been further reduced, and the neater balance between production and consumption has freed capital for the manufacturer and has cut down the serious hazard of substantial inventory losses. There are no quantity products and only a few special products that cannot be supplied in quick response to current demands. Normal development of a few nonmetallic industries has been retarded by the government's unpredictable application and irrational interpretation of antitrust laws, and by extension of preferential tariffs to new countries and new products.
