The Bureau of Mines used laminar hot air jets of l/8- to 3/4-inch diam-eter to determine the hot gas ignition temperatures of various combustible vapor-air mixtures. The combustibles were n-hexane, n-octane, n-decane, a hydrocarbon jet fuel (JP-6), and an adipate ester aircraft engine oil (MIL-L- 7808). Minimum ignition temperatures occurred at a fuel to air weight ratio of about 0.5 and were not greatly sensitive to variations of fuel concentra¬tion. Moderate variations of jet velocity also had little influence on these ignition temperatures. However, these temperatures decreased with increase in heat source dimensions (jet diameter). The hot gas ignition temperatures of the combustibles were not necessarily much greater than corresponding autoignition and wire ignition temperatures when the size (,F the heat source and the ignition criterion were the same.

TasmaniaÆs mineral endowment has resulted in 600 abandoned mines. Commonly occurring sulfide minerals such as pyrite and pyrrhotite can generate acid drainage and also mobilise heavy metals. Due to the StateÆs steep topography and high rainfall the risk to water quality in the receiving environments is significant. Surface waters impacted by abandoned mine sites typically showed high sulfate and metal distribution at pH range of 2.0 to 5.0. The impacted waters generally showed metal distribution in the high acid/extreme metal to low acid/low metal range. A similar trend was shown by sulfate distribution. Elevated levels of metals and sulfate downstream from several abandoned mine sites indicated that active sulfide oxidation is occurring and these sites may be potential point sources of metal pollution in the receiving environment. High correlation between metal and sulfate distribution suggests that sulfate distribution in surface waters may be used as a cost-effective investigation tool for preliminary assessment of acid drainage.

FROM indirect evidence point defects have been believed to influence the fatigue behavior of metals and alloys.1,2 Measurements of changes in resistivity made after cyclicstressing at low temperatures indicate that a very high density of defects is present, part of which may be removed by room-temperature annealing.3'4 These results are consistent with the generation of a high number of point defects at low temperatures. Corresponding measurements made after room-temperature stressing did not show any recovery effects.3 This was attributed to a stabilization of the dislocation network after a few thousand cycles without generation of vacancies. In this laboratory resistance measurements of copper single crystals, shaped as normal fatigue specimens ,5 have been made with a Kelvin double bridge at room temperature during and after cyclic stressing at 80 cps by comparing with a dummy at a close and constant temperature. Temperature differences were measured to ±0.025°C with fine thermocouples taped onto the gage lengths. Potential leads were tin-soldered into small holes in the gage length to give stable values. The ventilation survey was conducted in an underground longwall trona mine. The mine is relatively shallow and categorized as a gassy mine. The ventilation system consists of nine shafts (three intakes and six exhausts). Three surface based axial fans ventilate the mine configured in a blowing arrangement. Following the ventilation survey airflow quantity, frictional pressure losses and air psychrometric characteristics have been quantified. An accurate resistance survey has been conducted to calculate the pressure drop with regard to moving cages and skips in the shafts. This paper discusses the benefits of utilizing high accuracy digital pressure transducers and psychrometers in a ?leapfrogging? survey to gather data needed to build the computer ventilation model. Two underground booster fans with VFD are currently idle but available at the mine. The ventilation model has been used to determine the optimal booster fan locations to decrease the overall operating cost by reducing the load carried by the main fans. A leakage study has been conducted to evaluate the effects on the system of additional pressure from a booster fan. The study finally prepares a future ventilation model for the next fifteen years of mine operation and investigates the effect of proposed scenarios.

In addition to the compliance aspects of operations, due diligence will be discussed.1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe impact of mining projects on the environment is an area of major concern to the public, governmental agencies and mining companies. Due to the ever increasing pressure on the government by special interest groups and the public, governments have implemented legislation to control potential environmental impact of mining, from the exploration phase through to close-out. By not planning for environmental issues during all phases of a mining operation, unavoidable delays and retrofitted environmental programmes will be expensive and cause projects to be delayed, which, ultimately, may cause the abandonment of a mining prospect. Most jurisdictions require at least one full year of background environmental data. Therefore, many thousands of dollars are wasted as construction is interfered with or held up due to data collection. This may be avoided by a thousand dollars worth of sample being collected and analyzed early in the project."

This paper describes, in detail, results obtained from a research study of a complex iron ore aiming to produce a pellet feed concentrate with at least 65% of Fe and less than 3.5% of SiO2 in the final concentrate. The work includes an ore desliming followed by column flotation at laboratory scale. The ore sample was from Carajás province - Brazil and represents a complex low grade compact itabirite ore, analyzing 35.9% Fe, 45.1% SiO2 and 0.57% of Al2O3. Yet, the feed was treated previously by magnetic separation and grounded to 97% < 20 µm; this sample was named MAG 2. The chemical and mineralogical characterization of the MAG 2 sample showed that Fe and SiO2 grades were 50.7% and 24.3% respectively and was composed mainly by hematite, goethite and quartz. The particle size distribution, using a laser diffraction technique, showed that 90% of the particles were < 18 µm; 50% less than 8 µm and 10% minor than 1 µm. When the cationic reverse flotation without desliming was tested the selectivity of the process was very low and did not meet the concentrate metallurgical goals of the pellet feed product. However, when desliming was applied prior to flotation, a concentrate product with chemical characteristics of the pellet feed was obtained. The best results after desliming and column flotation achieved global iron metallurgical recovery of 72% with Fe grade in the concentrate of 66.5% and 2.1% SiO2 using starch as depressant for the iron oxides minerals at 1200 g/t ? 1500 g/t and an amine as the quartz collector at 100 g/t concentration (pH constant, at 10.5). It is believed that the desliming stage was key in the separation of the iron bearing particles and has a high potential for the flotation process of this type of ores.

The forecasting of floating earth inrush into the working is to a great extent connected with the investigation of the rock mass stressed-deformed state around the working. The aim of such investigations is to estimate the carrier ability of the protective layer (which is stabilized by the physico-chemical mode of fixing) and to determine it&apos;s thickness, which is to be sufficient to present the floating earth inrush into the working. We consider the protective layer to have exhausted it&apos;s carrier ability if the rocks of this layer reached the overlimit phase of deformation and it&apos;s greater part (section), which adjoins the working. is destroyed up to the limit of the remaining strength. So, the aim of investigations is to determine the size of the rocks inelastic deformation zone in the roof of the working. It is necessary to take into account the presence of water saturated seam in the roof and the overlimit characteristics of the rocks, their ability to lower the carrier capacity up to the level of the remaining strength.

The control room in a mineral processing plant has become increasingly complicated with complex unit operations coupled with rapidly evolving systems of sensors and control. Even with significant automation, human intervention is required to counter various scenarios that play out every day. A typical control room operator must monitor over 300 individual points of data in order to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the plant. At the same time, the experience of the workforce is decreasing as operators retire and the new generation enters the concentrators. Global competition for skilled operators continues to be strong and the opportunity to apprentice has diminished. The challenge is to provide a skill foundation for the operators so that they can be effective in the concentrator in a timely and safe manner. Progressively, the industry is turning to dynamic simulation tied into the control system. The simulator environment operates behind the control system to emulate the plant operation, reacting as the plant would when a change is made. The operator drives the process, with realistic feedback, which enables learning in a safe environment. This paper will take the reader through a green-field case study and discuss the effectiveness of integrating an operator training simulator (OTS) on the operator’s learning curve.

While the haematite concentrates produced in Eastern Canada and the magnetite concentrates that Australia will soon be producing are different feed materials, the pellets they produce have similar physical and metallurgical properties. This paper will examine the similarities and differences in the evolution of pellet microstructure for pellets produced from magnetite and haematite. The molten slag phase generated at high temperatures has a lower melting point when in contact with magnetite compared with haematite due to the higher divalent iron content. The presence of some slag is beneficial for bonding but too much can inhibit oxidation of magnetite, although slag generation at lower temperatures reduces energy usage. In pellets produced from haematite, magnetite is generated artificially from the combustion of the carbon particles added to the pellet feed as a source of energy. Maintaining the optimum production level and mineralogy of such æsecondaryÆ magnetite, allowing for its subsequent reoxidation, is important for the quality of haematite pellets. In both magnetite and haematite pellets, balancing the slag formation and oxidation (re-oxidation for haematite pellets) of the magnetite (secondary magnetite for haematite pellets) is necessary.

THE briquet plant of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co., at Lansford, Pa., has previously been referred to.1 It has passed. the stage of experiment and now rests,, on a foundation practically and financially sound. The purpose of this paper is to explain how success has been attained, and to set standards for the development of hard-coal briquetting which may eliminate future failures. All the conclusions are based on actual results, avoiding speculation and theory. Up to three years ago, the L. C. & N. Co. used coal-tar pitch as a binder in making hard-coal briquets. The plant operated with a monthly output of 300 to 600 tons and was unable to meet its own expenses. Naturally, no one was satisfied, especially as the ideals of a smokeless briquet were still unrealized. Then came the Dutch oil process, introduced in this country by the General Briquetting Co. of New York. This process uses as binder a small percentage of heavy residue of petroleum, which, being liquid, permits great economy of handling; it also did away with the most objectionable fumes of the former briquets. This oil2 is not absolutely smokeless; heating the fresh fuel to red heat liberates some low-volatile hydrocarbons, yielding a white smoke which is not objectionable. On the other hand, this oil adds to the briquet about 7 per cent. of volatile matter, giving the product a heating capacity equal to that of the best free-burning anthracite coal. The average silt used in the manufacture of these boulets averages 16.5 per cent. chemical ash, corresponding to 12,000 B.t.u. per pound of coal. The Hydrolene used as binder runs about 17,500 B.t.u. per pound, and approximately 7 per cent. of it enters into the mixture, hence 12,000 X 0.93 11,160 B.t.u. 17,500 X 0.07 1,125 B.t.u. Oxidation of pure metals is a chemical reaction in which the metal loses one or more electrons, such that the atom of the metal changes from the neutral state to a positively charge ion and reacts with oxygen to form an oxide of the metal. The oxide can form as a protective and adherent scale that slows down further oxidation, or may spall off repeatedly, exposing fresh metal surface to react with oxygen. In multi-component alloy systems such as typical high temperature NiCrAlY bond coats, more than one oxidation mechanism may take place at once and thus, complicates the study of oxidation. To better understand the competition between formations of oxides of different compositions, a thermodynamic assessment is carried out to study the oxidation mechanism of a Ni-27Cr-9Al (at %) ternary alloy. Based on the assessment, it is demonstrated that the layering of different oxides can be determined, with the most stable oxide (alumina) existing directly above the metal-oxide interface and the least stable oxide (nickel oxide) locating on the outer most layer. A comparison between the calculated results and previously published experimental observations shows excellent agreement.

Diesel fuel fire experiments were conducted in NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory’s (PRL) Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to determine the critical air velocity for preventing smoke rollback. Such information is necessary for the preplanning and implementation of ventilation changes during mine fire fighting and rescue operations. The fire intensity varied from 50 kW to 300 kW depending upon the fuel tray area. Airflow in the 2 m high and 2.9 m wide coal mine entry was regulated during the course of each experiment; measured upwind from the fire as an average over the entry cross-section with an ultrasonic airflow sensor; and recorded dynamically with a mine monitoring system. The extent of smoke reversal was monitored with light obscuration monitors, ionization smoke sensors, and visual observations. Experimental results for the critical air velocity for smoke reversal as a function of fire intensity compared very well with model predictions based upon a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) fire dynamics simulator.

"In cooperation with le Ministère de l&apos;Énergie et des ressources, Québec, le Centre de Recherches minérales, Sainte-Foy, Québec, and various silica producers, selected deposits of Quebec silica were identified in the southern region of the province and sampled to provide material for evaluation as glass and foundry sand by CANMET. The samples included both sandstone and quartz/quartzite. Head sample analyses ranged from 94.66% to 99.54% SiO2, 0.038% to 0.230% Fe2O3, and 0.16% to 4.51% Al2O3.Impurities included pyrite, iron oxides, and iron staining on quartz grains; carbonates as calcite; and alumino-silicates as clay and/or feldspar. Processing included size reduction to grain size, about 600 µm, by jaw, roll and cone crushers, and grinding in a muller-mixer. Removal of fines was achieved by attrition scrubbing and washing. Further removal of impurities was achieved by reverse flotation of iron oxide and alumino-silicate minerals employing both anionic and cationic collectors. Flotation resulted in a substantial improvement in the quality of most sands, the quartz concentrates analyzing 99.08% to 99.80% SiO2, 0.014% to 0.048% Fe2O3, and 0.06% to 0.49% Al2O3. Removal of iron oxide minerals was also investigated using the Sala HGMS. Iron oxide analyses of the non-magnetic fractions were comparable to the iron oxide analyses of the quartz concentrates obtained by flotation, 0.013% to 0.054% Fe2O3. On the basis of the samples submitted, silica from 5 of the 6 deposits studied has potential as source material for glass sand. Foundry tests showed that 3 of the 4 samples submitted for evaluation have potential as foundry sand."

The dynamites are graded according to the percentage of nitroglycerin that they contain. Thus a “40% powder” would be one in which the sticks, weighing one-half pound each, would include one-fifth of a pound of pure nitroglycerin. Dynamite is usually packed in paper cartridges weighing about one-half pound each which will vary in diameter. When ordering, it is customary to specify a size of cartridge that will as nearly as possible fill the drill hole, the commonest size being 1 ¼” in diameter by 8” in length. It is nearly always shipped in 50-lb. boxes, which have a volumetric capacity of 3/4 cu.ft.

"The trend towards near net shape casting requires the development of more complex design and control algorithms for continuous casting ""machines in particular with respect to the solidification process.Compared to conventional continuous casting the reduction in casting thickness allows to influence more directly the solidification rate by control variables like surface cooling and/or casting speed.In order to enable the determination of these control variables for a given solidification profile, an algorithm (inverse solidification analysis) has been developed based on nonlinear constrained optimization. The application of the model is illustrated by practical examples ranging from conventional continuous casting to advanced thin slab casting.IntroductionProcess development in the Iron and Steel Industry is directed towards the realization of continuous process sequences. Since the direct linkage of processes imposes some restrictions onto the individual process steps, more complex algorithms are needed for design of equipment and control of operation. In particular the recent trend to reduce casting thickness, i.e. to cast thin slabs, has made the direct coupling of continuous casting and rolling absolutely necessary. The prospective development in strip production is schematically shown in fig. 1."

The compressing of gas into a partially depleted gas drive oil reservoir to bring the contents to a single phase miscible with gas is proposed as a process worthy of serious study. The compressed gas and vaporized oil would be recovered by cycling. This paper explores the Possibility of recovering oil from reservoirs of 6,000 ft or more by this method. INTRODUCTION Many new methods for increasing the recovery of oil from reservoirs are under consideration in the various research laboratories. One method which should be considered for recovering oil From partially depleted gas drive fields is to compress gas into the reservoir until the contents become a single phase miscible with more gas. Natural gas then may be cycled through the reservoir to recover the oil. This procedure ideally will eliminate the capillary effects of the liquid ill the porous media and should permit recoveries similar to those obtained in cycling operations, probably of the order of 80 per cent. This paper explores the information now available for the prediction of the performance of such a project and discusses the problems likely to be encountered in recovering oil by cycling. For many years dry natural gas has been passed through oil reservoirs to recover natural gasoline which would vaporize from the oil. Recently a process of recovering more of the high boiling hydrocarbons has been described by employing high pressures at which the heavier hydrocarbons have a higher volatility. Nevertheless. this reported method does not eliminate the differential nature of the vaporization process and capillary forces are still present in the reservoir. The process under discussion in this paper would minimize differential vaporization and would remove capillary forces which are responsible for low oil recoveries. Higher gas pressures are required to accomplish this removal of the miniscus, but it does not follow that more gas is required for oil recovery. The process is limited to reservoirs deep enough to permit the use of the required pressure — Probabably 6,000 it and deeper. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS Briefly, the process is to compress natural gas into an oil reservoir which is partially depleted so that it has an oil saturation in the range of 40 to 60 per cent of the hydrocarbon pore space. The injected gas will pass through the channels formerly carrying gas to the wells to build up the pressure and dissolve in the oil phase. This injection will continue without production from the field until the reservoir reaches a single phase. If one were to select unique conditions such that the gas composition, the reservoir oil composition and the Per cent saturation would bring the mixture in the reservoir to the critical temperature and pressure simultaneously the phase behavior accompanying injection is shown by Fig. 1. The oil-gas mixture in the depleted reservoir has a critical temperature at C,. Addition of natural gas to the mixture will give a new critical temperature for each addition. Mixture No. 3 is shown to have its critical temperature at the reservoir temperature and reservoir pressure at P: the critical pressure. Under ideal behavior, the entire reservoir would be at iti critical temperature and pressure and the entire hydrocarbon content would be at a single phase. If the reservoir content were a binary system of methane and a heavy constituent. it would be miscible with more methane. However, for complex mixtures the critical locus does not confine the two phase region, and the dew point curves of Fig. 1 occur above the critical locus. The kinetics of loading of gold from bromide solution onto an anion exchange resin, PAZ-4, were investigated in a batch stirred reactor. The initial loading rate was described mathematically by a first-order reaction rate equation. The effect of agitation speed, temperature, resin particle size, resin concentration, initial concentration of gold and bromine in solution on the rate was investigated. The model described fairly accurately the loading process in terms of the variables investigated. The rate constant for the initial loading ranged from 0.5 to 1.3 x10-3 sec-1 and the half-time was 9.3 to 56 minutes. The initial rate constant increased with increasing temperature with an activation energy of 15.7 kJ/mole (3.8 kcal/mole). The rate constant was directly proportional to the concentration of the resin in solution. The subsequent reduction reaction was also modeled by the first-order rate equation and the apparent rate constant was estimated to be 3.0 x 10-6 sec-1 with a half-time of about 44 hours.

A comprehensive study of the effects of hydraulically fracturing water-flood wells in Oklahoma has been made by the Federal Bureau of Mines. This report presents results of that study and an analysis of some of the factors governing the results of fracture treatment on waterflood properties. Originally, hydraulic fracturing was used to stimulate oil production from old wells producing by primary methods, and its application to water-flooding was regarded with skepticism by most producers. However, since 1953 the number of fracture treatments of both oil and input wells in waterfloods has increased steadily. Hydraulic-fracture treatments in waterfloods have generally been successful in stimulating production from oil wells and increasing the rate of injection into input wells. Hydraulic fracturing has enabled several producers to turn probable failures into economically successful projects.
