A este se agrega el costo de mantenimiento y operación del sistema (componente variable del costo total). Por ello, es necesario analizar ambos costos y así comparar las alternativas reales.

The shape and position of the gas-oil transition zone during downdip displacement of oil by gas has been calculated using flow equations which include the effects of gravity, relative permeability, capillary pressure and compressibility of the fluids. The calculations treat the problem in two space dimensions, and results are compared with data from a laboratory model tilted at 30° and 60° from the horizontal on displacements near and above the maximum rate at which gravity segregation prevents channeling of the gas along the top of the stratum. The good agreement between calculated and experimental results demonstrates the validity of the tecbnique as well as that of the flow equations. INTRODUCTION Knowledge of the fluid distribution and movement in an oil reservoir is important in producing operations and estimation of reserves. The history of the oil industry has included steady progress in improving the accuracy of calculations which provide the required knowledge. The earliest method of calculating reservoir performance consisted of material-balance equations based on the assumption that all properties were uniform throughout a reservoir.l For many reservoirs such a simple formulation is still the most useful. However, when large pressure and saturation gradients exist in a reservoir, the assumption of uniform values throughout may lead to significant error. To reduce these errors, Buckley and Leverett2 introduced a displacement eqation which considers pressure and saturation gradients. Methods available at that time permitted solutions to the Buckley-Leverett equation in one space dimension; these solutions have been very useful in solving many problems related to the production of oil. However, the one-dimensional methods are not adequate for systems in which saturations vary in directions other than the direction of flow. An example of such a system is the case of gas displacing oil down a dipping stratum in which the gas-oil contact becomes significantly tilted. Of course, the Buckley-Leverett displacement method cannot predict the tilt of the gas-oil contact. Recent improvements3,4 of the one-dimensional Buckley-Leverett method achieve some success in predicting the tilt of the gas-oil contact at sufficiently low flow rates. However, at rates high enough that the viscous pressye gradient nearly equals or exceeds the gravity gradient, even these improved one-dimen,sional methods incorrectly predict the shape and velocity of the contact. Further progress in estimating such fluid movements in a reservoir appears to require consideration of the problem in more than one space dimension. The recent two-dimensional method of Douglas, Peaceman and Rachford5 appears adaptable to calculate changes with time of the saturation distribution in a vertical cross-section of a reservoir. The movement of saturation contours should represent the moving fluid contacts and include the effects of crossflow due to gravity, as well as variations in the rock and fluid properties. The nonlinear nature of the equations used in the method has prevented proof of the validity of the solutions. Douglas, Peaceman and Rachford made some comparisons with experiment but did not include cases in which gravity was important nor cases involving displacement by the nonwetting phase.For these reasons, a test of the two-dimensional method for a case in which these factors are included would be very desirable. The test selected was a comparison of calculated results with those from a carefully controlled laboratory experiment on a model with measured physical properties. The model selected was one in which gas displaced oil down a tilted, rectangular sand pack. The model can be thought of as representing a vertical cross-section taken parallel to the dip of a reservoir. The displacement thus simulates gas displacing oil downdip that might result from gas-cap expansion or gas injection. This report outlines the calculation method used

DETAILED programs for the Regional Meeting to be held at Boston, on Aug. 29, 30, 31, will be available on arrival at the Copley-Plaza Hotel, where registration will begin at 10 a. m. on Wednesday morning. The opening session will be non-technical in character and will be called to order at 11 a. m. Hector J. Hughes, Dean of the Graduate School of Engineering of Harvard University, and others will speak, and in the afternoon visits are to be made both to Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Wednesday afternoon will be devoted mainly to the opening of an exhibit of geophysical instruments and methods at Tech. On the way back to the hotel a tour of Old Boston will permit the visitors to see many of the historic points of the city. A special meeting of the Board of Directors has been called to be preceded by the usual subscription dinner at the University Club at 6.30 p. m. Owing to limita-tions of room, invitations have been sent only to the usual list designated in the By-Laws, the Directors, past officers, chairmen of sections and of technical committees. The dinner and a brief business session of the Board will be followed by a technical session at the Copley-Plaza at 8 p. m. and this in turn by a buffet supper at the University Club at 10 p. m. Sep-arate entertainment is being provided for the women for the evening. Thursday will be devoted to technical sessions both in the morning and afternoon. If necessary to permit adequate discussion, an overflow session will be ar-ranged in the afternoon. In the evening, a subscription dinner will be given at the Copley-Plaza at which past-presidents John Hays Hammond and Robert H. Rich-ards will be guests of honor. It is promised that speeches will be short and dancing will be arranged for following. The women will be offered a luncheon and bridge party at one of the country clubs on Thursday, and Friday will be devoted to an all-day excursion for both men and, women. Members are asked to register promptly on arrival so that the various committees will know as early as possible for how many to provide. The major part of the technical program has been provided by the Committee on Geophysical Methods of Prospecting, and a series of papers of great value and interest in this new field has been brought together. Abstracts of substantially all of them are printed in this issue of MINING AND METALLURGY and the papers themselves will, with one or two exceptions, be avail-able in printed form at the meeting and later in the regular publications of the Institute.

Arsenic-containing waste was dissolved into molten slags and the leaching behaviour of the quenched arsenic-doped slags (containing up to 2.3 wt per cent arsenic) was ascertained to evaluate the potential of this method as a means for arsenic disposal. The leaching behaviour was evaluated using acetic and sulphuric/nitric acid based solutions.From short-term (18 hour) leach tests, the amounts of arsenic in the leach solutions were found generally to decrease with an increase in the Fe(III)/Fe(total) ratio of the slag or an increase in pH of the leach solution. The amount of arsenic in solution increased with an increase in the slag basicity, the slag arsenic concentration or the surface area of the slag exposed to the leach solution. From longer term leach tests (up to 40 weeks) in the pH range 5 to 8, the arsenic remaining in the leach solution was believed to be controlled by sorption processes. The sorbent was an iron oxide-rich material which had the capacity to lower the arsenic concentration in the leach bottles to well below 1 ppm in some cases. At a leach solution pH over 9, the arsenic concentration in the solution increased with time, although the rate of solubilisation was much slower due to the high pH.Slags have the potential to stabilise arsenic and prevent it entering the environment provided attention is paid to the slag chemical composition and oxygen potential.

For several recent TBM tunnel projects, unexpected ground conditions have been encountered, causing extra cost, considerable delay, and in some cases major claims. Undoubtedly, insufficient and/or irrelevant site investigation and testing are among the main causes of such incidents. The purpose of this paper is to review the main investigations and tests relevant for hard rock TBM projects, with particular emphasis on the considerable development that has taken place over the last few years. Also, guidelines for defining optimum scope and extent of site investigations and testing are discussed, as well as the importance of adjusting the investigations and tests according to complexity of the ground conditions and project type.

HIWASSEE Dam, now under construction by the Tennessee Valley Authority on the Hiwassee River, a tributary of the Tennessee River, will require aggregate for approximately 800,000 cu. yd. of concrete. Near the damsite deposits of natural sand or gravel are not available and graywacke, a rock that is found in abundance, suggested itself as a likely source of manufactured aggregate. Graywacke is a metamorphosed sandstone composed principally of a mixture of quartz (65 per cent), mica (25 per cent), and feldspar (10 per cent). Other minerals are present in negligible amounts. The rock varies in different parts of the quarry from very fine to a coarse grain containing particles of about 1/4 in. maximum size, although the bulk of the deposit is medium grain. Extensive tests showed that graywacke would be suitable as a source of both coarse and fine aggregates. The aggregate plant available for use at Hiwassee Dam consisted of the coarse-aggregate and sand plant used on the Norris project. The coarse-aggregate plant had also been used at Chickamauga Dam. Although most of this plant equipment is now in use at Hiwassee, the present flowsheet is not only different from that at Norris and Chickamauga but is also unique as compared to the flowsheet of the average crushed-stone aggregate plant. It is hoped that this paper will show the importance of proper arrangement of equipment if the optimum in flexibility and capacity is to be attained. FLOWSHEET Rock is loaded by 3-yd. electric shovels into 12-yd. dump trucks, which carry the rock to the primary crusher, a 42-in. Superior McCully gyratory unit set at 4 ¾ in. (Fig. 1). The primary crusher discharges directly onto a 42-in. inclined belt conveyor, which carries the product to a surge storage pile with a maximum live storage capacity of approximately 3000 tons. A concrete tunnel under this storage pile houses the feed end of a 36-in. belt conveyor (conveyor B) fed by a 36 by 66-in.

This paper, after a brief introduction to the mineralization and structure in the mine area, outlines the methods now being employed for grade control at Bethlehem Copper Corporation. Sampling, subgrade drilling, blasting and the actual outlining of the ore are among the topics covered. The paper concludes with a summary of the results obtained, showing a reduction in dilution and an improvement in the grade of the copper ore going to the mill. Introduction T HE Bethlehem property is located in southern British Columbia in the Highland Valley about 30 miles southeast of the town of Ashcroft. The property is located within the Guichon batholith. The rock comprising the batholith is a massive, coarse-textured diorite, which, at Bethlehem, has been intruded by a younger quartz diorite, porphyries and breccia, referred to as the "Younger Complex." Mineralization, consisting of chalcopyrite and bornite with minor pyrite and molybdenite, occurs as disseminations, fracture fillings and coarse blebs. "We hear all the time about the value of hard work and perseverance, and the part they play in the professional life of successful people. What we do not hear so much about are the many professionals who work hard and persevere, yet never seem to quite reach the level of success they aim for. Some current authors are beginning to give more attention to the part luck/black swans/outliers play in success. This is not a new phenomenon, Machiavelli had a lot to say about it back in the Renaissance. So how can knowledge of this dynamic help in a modern organization? INTRODUCTION Work hard and you will succeed. Go to the right school, major in the right degree, study hard, and get a good job. Look at the lives of successful people, and do what they do. Be all that you can be. You can be anything you want to be. Really? Those who are successful always get attention, people want to know what they did to reach such a high position. Invariably, at least part of their narrative will include hard work, wise insight, taking advantage of opportunities, etc. If they are of a more generous nature, they might also allow that building the right friendships and collaborations also played a role. All of this may be true; what we do not often hear are the stories of those who did all of these very same things, but did not find success. An example from pop culture: The Voice. I have watched this show occasionally the past couple of years. One of the things I like about the show is that the initial screening of contestants is based solely on their singing voice (hence the name of the show), and not on their appearance. At the time of this writing (early November), the judges have just finished elimination rounds for their final teams to go on to the live shows. Here is my point—in almost every case the judges agonized over choosing who would go forward and who would be eliminated. And the reason is because all of them are really talented singers. It is impressive how gifted they are. At the end of each season, only one is declared a winner, out of that gifted pool of singers. When you hear their stories, they are all talented, hard-working individuals sacrificing for their art. And as far as I know, none of them has ever become a star. Hard work, dedication, sacrifice, talent—sometimes it is enough, sometimes not. I will be looking at the part uncertainty/luck/black swans play in our lives, but I want to make it clear at the beginning that I am not saying everything that happens to us is out of our hands or beyond our control. Taleb makes this same point (2007, p. 52): “This problem is chronic: if you tell people that the key to success is not always skills, they think that you are telling them that it is never skills, always luck.”"

Blasting is an integral part of mining activity and is an inherently destructive process. The quality of the rock mass in which an excavation is being driven has a strong influence on the level of dynamic forces to which the rock can be subjected and sustain damage. Though each specific rock mass occurrence is unique, yet there are common rock mass features which influence the outcome of controlled blasting in a similar way. A field study was conducted which involved assessment of blast damage at several operating mines and blasting of small scale models. The effects of block size and strength, joint parameters, ground water, weathering of rocks and rock mass rating on the results of controlled blasting have been investigated and discussed in this study. The influence of number and thickness of weak layers on overbreak control has been discussed in the light of practical data. Critical particle velocity ranges for damage to rock masses with different qualities have been outlined. An approach for the judicious design of perimeter hole pattern and charge concentration has been proposed.

The investigation of organic compounds in respiratory coal dust by high-resolution mass spectrometry has shown that the organic components differ (1) with particle size, (2) with rank of coal, (3) in coals of same rank from different coal seams, and (4) in respirable mine dust and respirable coal dust (prepared) from the same mine. The eight respirable mine dusts studied are from coal seams in the Appalachian region where the incidence of coal workers' pnumoconiosis is relatively high. The molecular weights of the major organic components vary greatly among these respirable mine dusts; three show strong concentrations of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons.

BCHMX (cis-1,3,4,6-tetranitro-octahydroimidazo-[4,5-d]imidazole or Bicyclo-HMX) was studied as an energetic component of three different plastic explosives based on three matrices: C4 matrix, semtex10 matrix and silicone matrix. The original plastic explosives, Composition C4 - based on RDX (1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane), Semtex 10 explosive based on PETN (pentaerythritoltetranitrate) and plastic RDX-silicone, were included for comparison. Sensitivity and performance parameters were studied.

Platinum-group metal (PGM) flotation .. concentrate from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to biooxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in an effort to break down the sulfide minerals and liberate the ? associated PGM's for subsequent chemical leaching. Bacterial treatment oxidized up to 94 pct of the sulfide present, destroyed the PGM-bearing pentlandite [ (Ni,Fe),9Ss) mineralization, and dissolved most of the nickel in the concentrate. Results showed that increased sulfide oxidation during the biological stage led to improved PGH recovery in the subsequent. chemical leaching stage. cyanidation at 80° c proved to be the best chemical leachant tested. It removed 7.6 pct of the palladium, 94 pct of the rhodium, 97 pct of the gold, but only 34 pct of the platinum from the biooxidized concentrate.

Canada encompasses an area of approximately 9,976,000 kilometres. It is comparable in size to the United States, but because of climatic conditions and limited transportation facilities, much of the area is unsuitable for agricultural or industrial development. We have a population of 22,000,000 - most of whom reside within a hundred mile belt paralleling the Canadian-U.S. border. Our principal cities in order of size are Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and Winnipeg. We have a total of 10 provinces, each of which elects its own - government. The Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories covering the northern half of the country, are administered by federal government agencies. The mining industry employs approximately 9% of the labour force and accounts for more than 40% of all tonnage shipped on Canadian railroads and inland waterways. In 1974 it produced $4,800 million in mineral wealth. Canada ranks first in world production of asbestos, nickel, zinc, and silver and has significant production of copper, iron, molybdenum, lead and other mineral commodities. During the past decade Canada, like many other western countries, has undergone dramatic economic and social change. This trend is continuing, and its effect on the Canadian mining industry has produced conflicting results. From the industry's point of view, some of the more negative aspects include a steadily increasing involvement by government at municipal, provincial and federal levels through the imposition of Stricter controls, regulations and taxation policies, a rising tide of nationalism, which advocates public ownership of all natural resources, the spectre of inflation (currently increasing at the rate of 8% per year) and unsettled labour conditions.

"The Lorraine property is located in the northern Intermontane Belt, north-central British Columbia. The property is underlain by intrusive rocks of the Duckling Creek Syenite Complex, an Early Jurassic, alkaline phase of the Late Triassic-Early Cretaceous Hogem Batholith. Two significant zones of copper-gold mineralization have been explored to date; the Main zone (historical Upper and Lower deposits) and the recently discovered Extension zone. A combined geological resource was estimated in 1975 for the Main zone deposits at 10 million tonnes averaging 0.7% Cu, and from 0.1 g/t Au to 0.34 g/t Au. The Extension zone, still at an exploration stage, is estimated to be considerably smaller than the Main zone.Copper-gold mineralization at Lorraine Mountain exhibits characteristics suggestive of both magmatic and hydrothermal origins, and may be related to orthomagmatic-hydrothermal fluid flow contemporaneous with magmatism and development of migmatitic fabrics. A depth greater than the depth of formation of classical porphyries may explain many of the variations displayed by mineralization at Lorraine. These characteristics distinguish Lorraine from other members of the alkalic suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits in the Canadian Cordillera.IntroductionThe Lorraine prospect is located in the Omineca Mountains, at the headwaters of Duckling Creek, 56 km northwest of Germansen Landing (Fig. 1). The property is centred at latitude 55°55'N, longitude l25°26'W on NTS mapsheet 93N/14W. The area is typified by mountains of moderate relief, with elevations ranging from 1150 m in the valleys to peaks of 2000 m. Valleys are U-shaped and blanketed by glacial till which give way to steep, talus covered slopes and sharp ridges. Outcrop is generally limited to elevations above 1600 m (Fig. 2)."

"Sand is one of the commonest materials for industrial use, not only as a building material, but in many industrial processes. The general name applies to all grades, from the comparatively impure, unsorted product used in concrete, to especially sized products of extreme chemical purity. Various definitions have been proposed, all more or less open to objection, as they fail to cover special applications. One is: ""Sand - The fine granular material naturally or artificially produced by the disintegration or crushing of rock or slag"". This does not fit the definition of sand as understood by geologists, who consider sand only as a naturally formed product. Another is: ""Sand - The fine granular material naturally produced by the disintegration of rock"". This does not take the chemical com-position into account, and for practically all uses, except in concrete and plaster products, a material composed predominantly of silica or rather quarts is implied.Sand for special purposes usually requires different methods of preparation from those where the ordinary mixture of sizes as naturally occurring are suitable. One of the classes requiring the most uniformly sized grains is sand blast sand.Sand Blast SandThe use of the sand blast has increased rapidly during the past few years. It was formerly used almost entirely in the foundry to clean and remove inequalities from rough castings. This is still the most important application, but in addition, it is now employed for the removal of paint from old surfaces, carving and engraving on stone and marble, glass cutting, cleaning or renovating the rails of stone and brick buildings that have become discolored, preparing the surface of metals for the electrolytic bath, putting the final finish to metal surfaces, and has even been proposed as a means of channeling or cutting out blocks of stone in the quarry."

This report documents the current status of the U.S. Bureau of Mines ongoing investigation of the use of adaptive signal discrimination (ASD) systems to distinguish between cutting coal and cutting rock. Cutting-tool forces and vibrations were measured in the laboratory using both conical bits and roller cutters in a linear-cutting apparatus for several material samples and two cutting directions. A number of ASD systems consisting of one or more signal classifiers were trained and tested to study how data window size, type of signal feature, and combining (polling) of classifier results influence system performance. The results show that ASD system recognition rates can be improved by increasing data window size, removing air-cutting portions from the signal data, overlapping data windows, and combining (fusing) information at various levels of ASD system operation.

"Starch is the most widely used depressant in the reverse cationic flotation of iron ores. There is however, an indication from recent studies, that other polysaccharides may successfully replace them. When starches are used in the flotation of iron ores in the presence of quartz as gangue mineral, their strong adsorption on the surface of iron oxides can be explained by the molecular conformation between the available sites on the mineral surface and two hydroxyls of starches. However, when the gangue minerals are iron-bearing silicates, the strong interaction with starch can occur on these minerals since they have the same surface behaviour as iron oxide. In this work bench scale tests were conducted in order to generate scientific knowledge about other alternatives depressants for the flotation of iron ores. A magnetic pre-concentrate from a skarn iron ore processing plant was used as feed material for flotation tests. The reverse flotation approach was used to upgrade the iron content by removing complex ironbearing silicates. The depressants used in this study were: corn starch, dextrin, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and humic acid. The tests were performed under different pH conditions in order to try to relate the efficiency of depression to the pH used during flotation. The results show the important role of pH as each depressant reached its best performance at different pH values. At alkaline pH the corn starch showed best depression performance while the humic acid is more efficient at pH close to neutrality.INTRODUCTIONIron corresponds to approximately 6% of earth’s crust composition (McDonough and Sun, 1995). It is the most used metal in our lives, some of its properties as resistance and facility to be shaped makes is replacement very difficult. The primary sources of iron on our planet are minerals. The iron-bearing minerals most commonly found in nature and economically exploited are magnetite [Fe3O4], hematite [Fe2O3], goethite [FeO(OH)] and siderite [FeCO3] (L O Filippov et al., 2014). These minerals are commonly associated with other minerals (most of the time not economically exploited) forming the so-called iron ore. Iron ore is the source of primary iron for the world’s iron and steel industries."

McDuffie county, once a part of Columbia county, lies in the eastern part of central Georgia, about 20 miles west of the Savannah river, and bounded on the northtwest by Little river. Wrightsboro, now almost forgotten, was one of the principal towns of Georgia before the Revolutionary war, and much of the land hereafter described as belonging to one of the principal gold-bearing sections of the South had been taken up by the early agricultural settlers, and was already under cultivation. Indeed, some of the present mining companies can trace their chain of title back to the original grant of King George III., made in 1771. The first discovery of gold in Georgia, however, was not made until 1823, when two English miners, who had emigrated to this country and were traveling as peddlers through this section, discovered quartz, rich in gold, on what is now known as " the 40-acre lot," and owned by the Columbia Mining Go. These men had no money to buy the lands, and not being able to stake off a claim and begin work, as is the custom in other places, they were forced to seek the aid of the native farmers. In this we are told that they were for a long time unsuccessful; the farmers and land-owners not knowing or caring anything about gold mining. In 1826, Jeremiah Griffin, a wealthy farmer, became interested with them, and they did some prospecting and located several rich veins. Mr. Griffin soon became enthusiastic, and bought about three thousand acres of supposed gold-lands, lying along Little river.. This purchase was unfortunate for the mining industry, as it effectually shut out all other prospectors, and confined entirely to Mr. Griffin and his associates the mining development of the whole region. As a part of a Bureau of Mines program on the conversion of coal to liquid and gaseous fuels, the kinetics of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis on iron catalysts was investigated. Nitrided catalysts were studied at 21.4 atmospheres using feed gases ranging from 2H2+1CO to 0.25H2+1CO, and at 7.8 to 21.4 atmospheres using 1H2+1CO gas. The overall apparent activation energy increased with increasing carbon monoxide content of the feed gas from 19.5 kcal/mole for 2H2+1CO to 23.7 for 0.7H2+1CO. The rate of synthesis with 1H2+1CO feed increased linearly with operating pressure from 7.8 to 21.4 atmospheres. A semifundamental rate equation of the form [r=a'PH2 0.6pco 0.4- ?r0.5PH200.5] was shown to fit the data satisfactorily. The relative usage of hydrogen to carbon monoxide decreased with increasing conversion, passed a minimum, and then increased. Apparently water is the principal primary product and carbon dioxide is produced by subsequent water-gas shift reaction. In another group of experiments water, carbon dioxide, argon, and methane were added to 1H2+1CO feed to a nitrided iron catalyst. Argon and methane were only diluents. Carbon dioxide was a slight inhibitor and water vapor was a strong inhibitor to the rate of synthesis. Water accelerated the water-gas shift and usually increased methane production. Important factors of catalyst geometry in determining rate were found to be particle size and extent of reduction. Apparently the active portion of the catalyst is confined to a layer of 0.01 to 0.02 cm from the external surface of particles. A special solution was made of differential equations relating re¬action at the catalyst surface to diffusion in pores of the catalyst for spherical particles with an active layer surrounding an inert core. The equation derived expressed the experimental data reasonably well. Diffusivities determined by this equation varied from 3 to 24X10-6 cm2/sec; these values are of the same magnitude as observed for the diffusion of gases in liquid. The appendix presents a group of synthesis experiments at pressures of 21.4 to 103 atmospheres. In this range the rate of synthesis on nitrided iron catalysts increased with pressure to the 0.74 to 0.84 power.

Twenty-eight samples, representing the Pittsburgh, Lower Kittanning, Stockton-Lewiston, Coalburg, Winifrede, Cedar Grove, Peerless, No. 2 Gas, Powellton, and Eagle beds, were carbonized by the Bureau of Mines--American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method, and yields of products and physical properties of cokes were determined. Expanding characteristics of 22 of the samples were determined in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. The Kanawha County coals tested were high-volatile A bituminous in rank, with dry, mineral-matter- free fixed- carbon contents ranging from 53.9 to 66.3 percent. With few exceptions, they were chemically satisfactory for metallurgical use, and most of the coke-strength indexes were within the industrially accepted range for high-volatile blending coals.
