Over the last few years Lonmin Platinum and Sandvik have embarked on a unique partnership of collaboration through a systematic approach to developing equipment to mechanize and automate narrow reef platinum mining. After the initial design and manufacture of the equipment the key aspect is the integrating equipment, people and method into a mining system. Another key aspect of mechanization is the optimization of equipment utilization, and this philosophy has ensured continual evolvement of mining methods. This paper describes the trials and development that have resulted in the mining method described as Lonmin mechanized breast.

THE most important development in the petroleum industry in Montana, during 1924, was the bringing in of the Hepp well on May 12, by the Midwest Refining Co. This followed three years of active prospecting and drilling in the state by this company. The well is located 35 miles west of Billings, in Stillwater County, and makes a high-grade paraffin oil from the Dakota sand at a. depth of 3825 ft. After flowing for several months at the rate of 150 bbl. per day, the well has been shut in for lack of storage, awaiting further development in the field. TABLE 1. Gas is produced for local use at Havre, Chinook, and Baker, and a carbon-black plant is located at Baker.

Red Dome Mine was a highly complex gold copper operation developed over a number of phases between mid-1986 to October 1997. With only three years of production ahead at any time, a proactive practical approach to mine closure was necessary. In 1989 the Domains Concept to life-of-mine planning and mine closure was created as a response to the proposed changes to legislation.The Domains Concept, a relatively simple idea developed to integrate mine closure during production at Red Dome, has been broadly adopted by both government agencies and industry in the intervening 20 year period. Over time the author has observed that the concept has been poorly applied, misunderstood and in some cases even misrepresented. As a consequence, the potential opportunities from applying the concept, including the optimisation and minimisation of life-of-mine costs, mitigation of long-term financial liability exposures and building credibility with the general community, have been missed.This paper examines the many benefits, advantages, applications and perceived barriers to developing and integrating a fully costed life-of-mine plan. Integrating the Domains Concept early in the project, within the operational budgeting, allows the production of a meaningful and useful document, representative of a whole life-of-mine, cradle to grave, with measurable rehabilitation and closure outcomes when the concept is used to full effect.The Domains Concept serves to optimise cost-effective, whole of mine, life cycle planning which provides beneficial outcomes for the community, significantly mitigates legacy issues and contributes to the attainment of compliance and sustainability principle objectives.CITATION:McCarthy, B E, 2014. These classes depend largely upon physical characteristics rather than upon chemical composition, and consequently they cannot be accurately defined. The divisions into anthracite, semi-anthracite and semi-bituminons are fairly satisfactory; but the term bituminous embraces so large a variety of coal that it is of little value, and the term lignite is so loosely applied that it has little or no place in a scientific classification.

Boron-doped p-type and arsenic-doped n-type source materials were used to deposit thin silicon films on amorphous fused quartz substrates by cathodic sputtering in argon atmospheres. All as-sputtered films were found to have high electrical resistivities of about 104 ohm-cm, despite controlled variation of the substrate temperature from 50O to 400°C. The high resistivity of the n-type films persisted even after postdeposition heat treatments as high as 1000°C, while p-type films showed a sharp decrease in re-sistivity to values on the order of 1 ohm-cm or lower after heat treatments above 650°C. X-ray and electron diffraction, together with transmission electron microscopy of the p-type films, revealed that the improved electrical properties resulted from two distinct processes. A primary crystallization or recovery within the pains, which were approximately 200Å diam in the as-sputtered films, accompanied the initial sharp drop in resistivity at 650°C. Following this process, a secondary recrystallization or discontinuous grain growth was nucleated in films heated at 1000°C. The resulting significantly increased size of certain grains and the corresponding decrease in grain boundary area accompanied an additional decrease in resistivity after heat treatment at 1000°C. The properties of thin silicon films are of interest because of their possible application in device technology. Although evaporated silicon films on amorphous substrates1-3 and both sputtered and evaporated germanium films4-' have been studied in some detail, sputtered silicon films have not been widely investigated. It has been observed that evaporated silicon films deposited at substrate temperatures below approximately 600°C are amorphous.1,3,9,10 At substrate temperatures higher than this, the films are polycrys-talline, sometimes exhibiting a fiber texture with the fiber axis normal to the substrate surface.' Similar results have been obtained with germanium films, although in this case the substrate temperature for the amorphous to crystalline transformation is reported to be as low as 150OC.5 The mechanism of film deposition by cathodic sputtering differs markedly from that of thermal evaporation. It might be expected, therefore, that the properties of sputtered and evaporated silicon films would also differ. The purpose of our study was to determine the effects of deposition conditions and heat treatments on the electrical resistivity, structure, and composition of thin silicon films sputtered on fused quartz substrates. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Apparatus. A schematic diagram of the sputtering apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The vacuum chamber was enclosed by an 18-in.-diam by 12-in.-high Pyrex bell jar mounted on a stainless-steel base plate. Access holes in the base plate were used to supply argon gas to the chamber, to allow for various electrical feedthroughs, and to provide mechanical motion to the shutter between the source material and substrate. The chamber was evacuated by a pumping system consisting of a 720 liter per sec oil diffusion pump backed by a 13 cu ft per min mechanical pump. Ultimate pressures of less than 1 x 10-6 torr could be achieved. The substrates were securely mounted on the stainless-steel substrate holder by quartz tabs held in place by stainless-steel screws. Temperatures of the substrate holder were measured by a thermocouple inserted within the holder. A quartz lamp was used to heat the holder and temperatures as high as 420°C could be maintained. Deposition Conditions and Procedure. The substrates used were polished fused quartz slides 116 by 1-12 by 3 in. and were outgassed at 200°C for 1 hr at a pressure less than 1 x 10-5 torr before film deposition. This was followed by a presputtering period of 2 hr during which the movable stainless-steel shutter was so positioned that deposition on the substrate was prevented. "In Malaysia, there were two rare earths processing plants namely Asian Rare Earth (ARE) and the Malaysian Rare Earth Corporation Plant (MAREC) in Perak, which were operated until 1992 and were subsequently closed due to problems pertaining to disposal of large amount of radioactive waste. Recently, Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) has become one of the largest rare earths processing plant in the world producing rare earth elements (REE) in Gebeng, Pahang. The primary raw material is lanthanide concentrate (LC) which is imported from Mount Weld mine in Australia and shipped to Malaysia. LC is produced from lanthanide ore after mining and mineral processing. The ore has a lower impact than Bayan Obo, Mountain Pass and adsorbed clay deposits, given the small footprint of the mine itself and the remoteness of the location. The type of ore being mined (rare earth phosphates: carbonatite, monazite) may have higher thorium content than bastnasite ore from the Chinese or American mines but still far below radiation concerns. This paper was written to review the processing flowsheet at the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP), the environmental impact associated with the processing of the said ores and the sustainability of the operation.INTRODUCTIONRare earth minerals are one of a set of 17 minerals or chemical elements which consists of yttrium and scandium, as well as the 15 lanthanide elements (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium). Despite their importance, rare earth minerals rarely exist in economically viable concentrations and they are usually difficult to extract. Rare-earth minerals create strong magnets when added to magnetic elements such as iron, and are useful for the production of electronics systems as well as electric cars. They are also used extensively in automotive catalytic converters, fluid cracking catalysts in petroleum refining, wind turbines, phosphors in colour televisions and flat panel screens, displays for mobile phones and laptops, rechargeable batteries, and various medical devices. The elements are typically split into two subgroups: the cerium sub-group of ‘‘Light’’ rare earth elements (LREEs) which includes La to Eu and the yttrium sub-group of ‘‘Heavy’’ rare earth elements (HREEs) which include the remaining lanthanide elements, Gd to Lu, including yttrium (Gupta and Krishnamurthy, 1992; Jordens et al., 2013; Trifonov, 1963). Scandium, however, when it is classified as a rare earth element, is not included in either the LREE or HREE classifications (Gupta and Krishnamurthy, 1992; Jordens et al, 2013). Half of the world’s 110 million tons of reserves exist in China while other sizable deposits are found in Russia, United States, Brazil, India, Australia, Canada, and Greenland. The countries known to be actively mining REE are China, Russia, India, Brazil and Malaysia (Hao et al., 2015). Among these countries, China has the largest REE production, accounting for more than 93% of global supply (Yap, 2015). The critical metal report (Moss et al. 2011) listed 14 economically vital raw materials that are prone to supply disruption and concluded that supply disruption would threaten the goal for cleaner transport and sustainable energy since rare earth metals are used in products using green technology, such as hybrid/electric vehicles, carbon capture systems, wind power generation, low-energy lighting, and energy efficient flat-screen displays."

What is your personal view and assessment of the overall health of the industry in the current global economy? The economic outlook remains soft for the near future and, although the global economy is showing signs of recovery, uncertainty has tempered the pace of recovery. In addition to uncertainty, we are still facing significant economic challenges in many parts of the world, including Europe and the United States. The rapid expansion of China?s economy has recently slowed, further contributing to the sense of uncertainty in the overall health of the global economy. This situation is both a blessing and a curse, depending on which sector of the mining industry we are considering. For example, coal, industrial minerals, aggregates, base metal and precious metals markets are impacted by different forces and drivers and will experience different outcomes within the same economic environment. Let me give a few concrete examples to illustrate this concept. The prevailing economic uncertainty that I have just described tends to drive investors toward safe havens. Gold has historically been viewed as a safe haven and as long as investors shy away from traditional investments, gold prices will remain high and gold mining companies will continue to expand and invest capital in their operations. The same sluggish economy that drives gold prices higher has the opposite effect on other segments of the minerals industry. A great example of this is industrial minerals and aggregates used in construction. The markets that consume these minerals have contracted significantly over the past five years. The outlook for this segment is poor, as the glut of available housing continues to inhibit demand for new construction and, thus, many industrial minerals. In addition to this, the federal government?s lack of political will to enact long-term legislation funding transportation and infrastructure projects continues to be a drag on the U.S. aggregates industry.

"Inco's Automated Haulage Truck System (AHT) is a revolutionary automatic guided vehicle that performs all load, haul and dump operations without human intervention. The high level of sophistication and the short period it has been in operation has only allowed a select few Inco personnel to become familiar with the ART operation and maintenance. As an aid to operations an expert system using the knowledge gained from the experienced specialists was implemented in the field.The AHT operating and maintenance assistance expert system will reason through the information given, arrive at conclusions and give advice to operations, technical and management personnel. It will provide comprehensive real-time troubleshooting assistance for the hydraulic, electrical and mechanical subsystems of the ART. The ART expert system has many benefits to Inco which include increased skill levels of ART operations and maintenance personnel, reduction in ART downtime, standardization of troubleshooting procedures and reduction in ART operating and maintenance costs. In the future, the expert system application will be linked to SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), maintenance and statistical software to display current and historical trends of variables from a centralized historical database. As well, a wide variety of features will be integrated into the system including AutoCad drawings, graphics, photographs, voice and video capabilities."

THIS paper is submitted primarily to put on record the results of a number of experiments carried out at the Wingdam mine of Consolidated Gold Alluvials of B.C., Ltd., with the object of establishing a reliable method of concentration of 'wash' and a maximum recovery of gold from the concentrate. It will be generally admitted that, during the last two decades, a tremendous amount of research work has been carried out, both by private companies and Government departments, with a view to improving the technique of the recovery of gold .from quartz veins or lodes. So thorough have been these investigations that milling practice at a modern quartz gold mine is almost an exact science, carried out with meticulous accuracy. In placer mining, on the other hand, very little departure from old traditional methods can be noted, with the exception perhaps of the more modern gold dredges. This may be due to the fact that the concentration of placer gravels, up to a certain point, is comparatively easy. Only a simple equipment of sluice box and riffies seems necessary where the gold is coarse and the gravel free from clay. In the early days of placer mining, when claims were rich and fairly 5hallow, nobody worried very much about fine gold; and, if clay was present, an enlarged dump box was constructed in which the gravel was subjected to a rather desultory puddling. That large quantities of gold are lost in normal placer practice is generally admitted. Some 26 years ago, I had inspectorial charge of many bucket dredges on the Ovens river, in Australia. Occasionally it was necessary for a dredge to work through its own tailing to reach a new section, and almost without exception enough gold was recovered from these tailings to defray the total cost of moving the dredge. Since those days, the technique of gold recovery in dredging has been considerably improved and it is still receiving close attention. Outside of dredge mining, most placer operations, deep or otherwise, are as they were-notorious gold losers, paying little attention to the recovery of fine gold and taking an absurd amount of time over each clean-up. In the Cariboo district of British Columbia, the alluvial gold is usual y associated with varying quantities of black sand (magnetic) and grey sand (non-magnetic); and it can be taken as axiomatic that, if you save all the black sand and grey sand, you save practically all the gold. It is on this hypothesis that we have carried out our research work and brought our recovery system up to its present highly satisfactory standard.

Experimental work is described in which extremely dilute aurocyanide liquors are treated with novel surface-active complexing agents to produce a hydrophobic aurocyanide species. Subsequent aeration of these liquors causes accumulation of such species at the air-water interface and the aurocyanide complex is transferred to a froth concentrate. A detailed performance assessment of this process is made and this knowledge used in the design of a pilot plant facility. Early results indicate the feasibility of the selective recovery of aurocyanide ions from reclaimed residue dam water (approximately 0.2ppm Au) with upgrade ratios of the order 180:1. A further study was made applying ion flotation to the recovery of gold from a carbon-in-pulp (CIL) feed liquor (approximately 1.0ppm Au). The probable economics of this process compared to conventional CIL processing is also described. Successful development of countercurrent ion flotation for concentrating solids-free gold solutions may offer a lower cost alternative to existing gold ore processing technologies, or in more secondary applications such as concentrating dilute gold solutions or heap leach runoff. The technology may also have more generalised applications to other heavy metal process- Ing.

The successful application of color sorting machines has established sensor-based sorting in the mineral industry in recent years and is considered today as a significant innovation in processing technology. However, we are only at the beginning of (market) introduction. New sensor systems have been developed, which exploit material properties such as electrical conductivity, magnetization, molecular structure, thermal conductivity etc. This opens up new exciting pre-concentration and upgrading possibilities for many applications such as nickel, gold, copper and other ores as well as for industrial minerals, diamonds and other gem stones.

"Ore outcrops were first discovered in the area in 1911. Following various periods of exploration by private interests and Cominco Limited, the Coast Copper Company, Limited property was brought into production in August 1962. Subsequently, Cominco explored the adjacent Quatsino Gold Mines property and is currently developing, and producing from, what is now known as the Benson Lake Mine.The Benson Lake Mine was developed using a conveyor-equipped decline and trackless LHD equipment. The operation produces 800 tons per day of copper-iron ore, copper being the main product. Copper and iron concentrates are trucked 25 miles to storage and shiploading facilities near Port McNeill to await shipment to Japan."

This article summarizes some of the results of the continuing research activity at the Henry Krumb Schools of Mines, Columbia University, directed towards a better understanding of the stochastic behavior of slurry flows in underground coal-slurry pipeline systems. Fundamental ideas supported by field observations are presented and a Semi-Markov model of the slurry flows is developed. As a result of this formulation, behavior of combined slurry flows from N independent coal faces can be expressed in analytical form. The contents of a slurry surge tank receiving slurry flows with certain stochastic characteristics is investigated in a function of discharge pump characteristics and time.

The plunging jet in tapping of steel from converters or electric arc furnaces entrains gas into the steel bath contained in a ladle. Gas entrainment rate and the effect of the gas on the flow pattern in the ladle are studied by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD. The work focuses on the mathematical modeling. Two numerical methods, one for free-surface flows and one for dispersed multiphase flow are combined. A transport equation for the average bubble diameter that incorporates the effect of coalescence and breakup is presented. Results from computations for one ladle and tapping configuration are shown. Our findings indicate that the gas entrainment rate is affected by the material properties of the liquid in the sense that the material properties determine the shape of the jet. Moreover, bubble sizes in the range of two-orders of magnitude are predicted in the ladle. The dispersed diameter model seems to work well. It showed the expected response to material parameters and the turbulent field. However, the presented analysis is just a first step that was limited due to certain simplifications. In order to obtain better insight in the tapping process improvements of the analysis seem necessary.

The studies carried out by the Russian researchers and those carried out jointly within some contracts with scientific organizations and companies of other countries, show that the electric pulse disintegration of materials (ED), proposed and investigated in detail in Russia (Kalyatsky, et al, 1980; Usov et al, 1987; Semkin et al, 1995; Usov and Tsukerman, 2000; Kurets et al, 2002) has been widely recognized and developed abroad (Andres, 1995; Inoue et al, 2000; Biela et al, 2008). The Russian and international journals and the proceedings of the conferences dealing with the electric pulse disintegration pay great attention to the principal principals of selective disintegration of materials. There is no, however, any information concerning both the technical means developed to implement the technique and the assessment of their performance, which would be necessary in objective assessment of the industrial use of the technology. The results of long-term studies of the technique and technologies of electric pulse disaggregation by research institutes such as Research Institute of High Voltages (Tomsk), Kola Science Centre of RAS (Apatity), Institute "Mekhanobr"(S.Pertersburg) described. Exploratory stands and technological installations are developed to carry out pilot tests and operations under production conditions. Basic circuits and classification of technical means electric pulse disintegration of the materials are proposed, the analysis of transportation schemes and classification of the material in the disintegration apparatus are given, construction of chambers for continuous stadial disintegration of ores and materials are presented. The features and technological efficiency of electric pulse disintegration of various types of ores, and the spheres of effective use of the method have been determined. Two recently published studies have considered whether and how robots, which have been designed for manufacturing applications, could find use in mining. The conclusions of both studies, if not identical, are compatible. Automation of mining activities will continue. Robots, at least in the short term, will have little application in mining. However, robotic concepts, both hardware and software, are of considerable relevance to mining automation, and can be anticipated to diffuse gradually into mine environments. The present paper is intended to convey the current state of thought on this subject to IFAC Symposium participants who may be unfamiliar with the referenced studies, and is not intended to report previously unpublished research.

Solar Hydrogen Energy Corporation (SHEC Labs) recently constructed a pilot-plant to demonstrate a Dry Fuel Hydrogen Generation System that is powered primarily by sunlight focusing-mirrors. The pilot-plant consists of: A Solar Mirror Array and Advanced Solar Concentrator and Shutter System; and two thermo-catalytic reactors to convert Methane, Carbon Dioxide, and Water into Hydrogen. Results from the pilot study show that Solar Hydrogen generation is feasible and cost-competitive with traditional Hydrogen production. More than 95% of Hydrogen commercially produced today is by the Steam Methane Reformation (SMR) of natural gas, a process that liberates Carbon Dioxide to the atmosphere. The SMR process provides a net energy loss of 30 to 35% when converting from Methane to Hydrogen. Solar Hydrogen production provides a 14% net energy gain when converting Methane into Hydrogen since the energy used to drive the process is from the sun. The environmental benefits of generating Hydrogen using renewable energy include significant greenhouse gas and criteria air contaminant reductions.

A general analytical solution of the effect of an inclined contact separating two media of differing electrical properties on a normally incident plane electromagnetic field has been given (Geyer, 1972). These solutions for the electromagnetic response at any observation point P(r, [u]) are given in the form of inverse Lebedev-Kontorovich transforms. Two modes of excitation are considered: (1) case where current density flows across strike of the contact separating the media of differing electrical properties (only Er , E [u] , and Hx differ from zero) and (2) case where current density flows along-strike (only Hr , H [u] , and Ex differ from zero). The electromagnetic fields in the frequency range of interest and for the rock conductivities under consideration are quasi-static in nature so that to a first-order approximation the horizontal magnetic field at the surface of the earth is constant and continuous across the discrete discontinuity in resistivity for case (1) above, and so that the tangential derivative of the horizontal electric field at the surface of the earth is constant and continuous across the discrete discontinuity for case (2) above. Of course, it is well known that where large horizontal gradients in conductivity exist, there also exists large anomalous components of the vertical magnetic field (Weaver, 1963). The recognition of such anomalous components and their magnitudes due to the presence of lateral resistivity changes in the overburden becomes very important in any wavetilt type measurement which may be used to locate a miner. When the lateral change in resistivity becomes quite large, the integral solutions (expressed as Lebedev-Kontorovich transforms) simplify considerably and allow ready numerical evaluation. Examples of the amplitude and phase responses of the radial electric, horizontal electric, and vertical magnetic field in the vicinity of the contrast in resistivity are shown in Figures 2, 3, and 4. Of particular significance is the fact that the anomalous vertical magnetic field is three orders of magnitude larger near the contact than far from the contact. This fact implies that where large resistivity contrasts do occur in the rocks overlying mine workings, that significant errors may be present in wavetilt measurements as used above for location criteria! Another observation insofar as the anomalous vertical magnetic field is concerned is the linear variation of phase as one proceeds away from strike in induction number (increased distance or frequency). For a pulse-excited communications system this phenomena would have a bearing on where the zero crossings would occur (i.e., 'pulse breadth') in the transient coupling between any given source-receiver configuration and at any given receiver site.

The use of aggregate pier foundation systems has become widespread as the engineering practice moves towards cost-effective ground improvement solutions that provide accelerated construction schedules. Increased bearing capacity, effective settlement control and potential for liquefaction mitigation are commonly acknowledged benefits of aggregate piers. This paper studies the mechanisms by which aggregate piers interact with each other and with the surrounding ground when excited by seismic loads. A particular emphasis was placed on the response of a raft foundation supported on a site improved using aggregate piers. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analyses were conducted using commercial software package, ABAQUS. Non-linear soil behaviour is modelled using a three-dimensional total stress-based bounding surface plasticity model, which is able to simulate stiffness degradation and damping increase in the soil. The soil stratigraphy considered in this study was a 30 m deep soil deposit that comprised a very stiff base layer and a shallow soft surficial clay layer. Ricker Wavelet time histories with different frequency contents are used as the excitation force in the analyses. Various area replacement ratios (ARR) for aggregate piers are studied for a square plan layout. The results presented in this study are considered to be of interest to researchers and designers in evaluating the seismic ground response of the sites improved using aggregate piers.
