In recent years, coal beneficiation has gotten considerable attention. Selective oil agglomeration has been accepted as the best method to produce clean coal with a high removal of pyrite sulphur. In this study, spherical oil agglomeration of Datong coal fines was carried out using diesel oil as a bridging liquid. The oil agglomeration has a surface properties based on coal cleaning technique. The effects of fundamental parameters have been investigated including the concentration of bridging liquid, the size of coal particle, the solid content of slurry, the agitation time and rate, pH, surfactants on the agglomeration performance and various salts on the ash rejection and removal of pyrite of the agglomerated products. The optimum conditions of particle size, diesel concentration, solid content, agitation speed and time, pH and the dosage of active agent have been determined as less than 8µm, 20wt%, 1200r/min and 10 minutes, 7.5g/t and 100g/t, respectively. Under these conditions the ash content in the products can be achieved 1.5% below, the ash rejection was up to 92%. It has been observed that ionic strength of the aqueous medium affects the agglomeration performance. The precombustion coal cleaning process based on improved selective agglomeration results in high ash and pyrite sulphur removals. Over 80% removal of pyrite sulphur can be achieved from run-of-mine coals by offering a more cost-effective sulphur reduction solution rather than any other SO2 removal technology. In addition, the removal of pyrite sulphur is very necessary for not only the prevention of environmental pollution but also economical reasons.

The Banat district in Romania was an important uranium mining area for the last 45 years until its closure in 1997. Uranium was present as finely dispersed pitchblende into solid bitumen lens and layers. Due to the mining activities, radioactive wastes have been disposed of in different places of the Banat area. These sites contain uranium, radium and radon and exhibit high contamination potential for environmental receptors (soil, air, waters, sediments and vegetation). Therefore the risk for human health through external and internal irradiation is considered high. The main pollution sources in this uranium mining area are mine and surface waters, waste and low grade ore heaps, dumps as well as release of radon. In this paper studies concerning recognition of pollution sources, delimitation of maps, uranium and radium solubilization and migration from dumps as well as environmental contamination of specific areas related to exploitation and exploration are presented. The risk assessment is based on the relationship ?source-pathway-target? in order to assess environmental risks and identify targets for rehabilitation. The sources causing significant contamination problems were identified by examining the pollutant linkage. The remediation plan for the Banat uranium mining complex involves mine flooding, treatment of water and leachates, as well as modification of heap slopes, application of covers and establishment of vegetation.

The challenge of "ore bodies getting steadily harder and lower in grade" was brought to light during the first oil crisis in the 70's. Shortly afterwards, HPGRs appeared on the scene with the promise of saving energy. This combined with developments in wear protection for the rolls ushered in a period of trade-off studies that considered the HPGR as an option to improve project economics or to even make projects feasible at all. Since then, applications of HPGRs at Cerro Verde (Freeport), PTFI Grasberg (Freeport), Mogalakwena (Anglo Platinum), Tarkwa (Goldfields), Boddington (Newmont), Penasquito (Goldcorp), and others have contributed to the creation of a formidable basket of operating experience. Collected through years of successful operation, this information has been used to validate design criteria, scale-up factors and establishing a clearer picture of what "to do" and what "not to do". This paper compares results from various mining operations using HPGRs in their processing plants. Some of the lessons learnt in different operating environments are reviewed in order to support proper implementation and operation of HPGR's. Some of the development programs that have been initiated to improve wear life of the tyres and to reduce overall operating costs are reviewed. It is timely to summarize today?s experience and analyse its implications for existing and new operations.

Amsterdam City Council is building a new metro line, the North–South Line. The line passes under Amsterdam Central Station (a listed building) about 18m below street level. The retaining wall that has to be built underneath the existing building is an innovative construction consisting of two rows of steel piles interspersed with a solid mass of overlapping jet grout columns: a composite ‘sandwich’ wall. This paper gives an overview of the approach taken to designing (computational models) and building the retaining wall. Special attention is paid to the observational method used for the construction of the jet grout columns.

"The influence of electric current pulse (ECP) on the solidification structure of SUS430 ferritic stainless steel (FSS) was investigated in the current study. The technology of ECP has been widely used to improve the properties of metals with relatively low cost. The parallel electrodes were inserted into the free melt surface to constitute a current loop. The different influences of three parameters on solidification structure were studied by changing the peak current value, frequency and treating time respectively. The results indicated that the ECP significantly increased the number of equiaxed grains of SUS430 FSS. The as-cast structure without ECP treating was almost wholly columnar, while the number of equiaxed grains of the specimen, which was treated 3min with a peak current of 400kIA, increased to 2698 in the observed surface. To get the best refinement, an optimum range of these three parameters is required and the peak current value plays the most important role.IntroductionFor the lack of nickel resource and the pressure of environment protection, ferritic stainless steel is increasingly adopted to replace the austenite stainless steel because of its low nickel content and good mechanical properties. SUS430 steel is a typical example with excellent performance and relatively low price to replace the application of austenitic stainless steel[1-3]. This type of steel with high thermal conductivity coefficient, low expansion coefficient, good oxidation resistance, excellent stress corrosion resistance and other fantastic characteristics is often used to make components which need to have resistances for atmosphere, water, steam and oxidizing acid corrosion[4]. Since the developing of columnar grains and low toughness at high temperature, its products are easily crinkled and cracked during the subsequent rolling process[5]. The application of ferritic stainless steel is limited by these defects[6-8]."

IN THE early evening of October 15, 1954, a large specially designed truck, convoyed by a second smaller one, arrived at Silver Bell, Arizona, completing a ten-hour 110-mile journey from Phoenix. The big truck was driven through gaps left in a previously prepared concrete foundation, the load was jacked up, the large girders that constituted the bed of the truck were pulled away, and the load was then lowered into place on the foundation. A crew of two men, the two truck drivers, finished the job in a little more than an hour. When they were through, a complete and attractive three-bedroom house, prefabricated in Phoenix, was almost ready for occupancy. About all that remained to do was to connect the utilities-water, electricity, plumbing, and gas. The kitchen and bathroom equipment and appointments were superior in every respect, and there was a built-in car port for the automobile of the prospective residents. This family domicile was one of more than one hundred, each averaging about $8,000 in cost, that the American Smelting and Refining Company has provided for its employees engaged in mining and milling 7,500 tons per day of low-grade Porphyry copper ore. Aside from the fact that it is more economical-partly because of the variety of union craftsmen needed to build and equip a house-to do the work in a city 110 miles away, the significant point is the high quality of housing that is provided for what may be called in nostalgic vein the "mining camp" of 1955. The Paranapanema Group was created in February 1996 when a group formed by the Brazilian pension funds acquired four companies dealing with nonferrous metals. The new Paranapanema Group, basically related to the tin and construction business, became the sole Brazilian primary copper producer, the second zinc producer and one of the most important producers of copper products, mainly tubes and fittings. To put together such different companies, managed before by family groups and with different cultures and principles, was and still is a big challenge. The strategy of developing and consolidating it as an homogeneous group is based in three pillars: an increase in production, quality and technological improvements on products and market mix and a permanent cost reduction program, using all the potential synergies founded.

To alleviate the hazard to personnel and danger to equipment caused by fires on large, mobile vehicles. The Approach: A system which automatically senses a fire at its early stage of development, warns the driver of the danger, and activates fire extinguishers in the zone of combustion, How It Works: The automatic fire protection system utilizes both thermal and optical sensors to detect the heat or light given off by a fire in the area of concern (Fig. 1). The system warns the driver of the hazard and then automatically extinguishes the fire with pressurized S-C class powder. The system can also be activated manually from the operator's cab or from ground level. Further, the automatic sequencing of the system can be manually overridden by the driver if he determines that the fire sensors have malfunctioned to cause a false alarm.

BHP World Minerals (BHP) commenced development of the Cannington exploration decline in 1993 using Peabody Resources LimitedÆs Mining Services Division (PRL) as the contractor. Approval was given in 1996 to complete the mine development and bring the mine into production in 1997. The total mine development at Cannington by PRL has included 14 km of headings, 1040 m of shaft sinking for ventilation and ore hoisting and 990 m of raise boring for ore passes and vent rises. Hard money schedule of rates contracts were used for mine development from 1993 until early-1997. This took the mine development down to 570 m below the surface and developed six levels. Because of significant risks, the final phase of the mine development was completed in 1997 under a partnering agreement. This paper examines the factors considered in making the change to partnering, the issues involved in negotiating the partnering agreement to complete the Cannington mine development and the outcomes of the agreement.

The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines has evaluated the potential resource and annual availability of cobalt from 27 deposits or districts in 11 market-economy countries. More than 95 pct of primary cobalt production from market-economy countries, mainly byproduct output from copper and nickel operations, was analyzed. Approximately 1,200,000 mt of cobalt is potentially recoverable at the demonstrated resource level. Very large additional resources exist, especially in laterite deposits, but are at the inferred level. The producing operations evaluated in this study are expected to produce about 19,000 mt of cobalt in 1989, significantly less than the available capacity of about 31,000 mt. More than 14,000 mt per year of cobalt is produced from copper-cobalt deposits in Zaire and Zambia, of which 11,000 mt can be produced at a copper price of $O.60jlb or less with a O-pct discounted cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR). Approximately 4,400 mt of cobalt is produced annually from nickel-cobalt deposits in six countries, of which about 1,800 mt (in Canada and Brazil) could be produced at a nickel price of $1.50jlb or less at a D-pct DCFROR. Approximately 200 mt per year of cobalt is produced from a cobalt mine in Morocco. Most of the evaluated nonproducing operations and prospects that could potentially produce cobalt as a principal product or byproduct would require a total cost (including a 15 pct-DCFROR) significantly exceeding January, 1989 market prices of the principal commodities. Principal-commodity dependence, transportation routes, cobalt toxicity, and other issues that could affect the availability of cobalt are addressed herein.

FOR a number of years European investigators have used laboratory methods of predicting the probable strength of coke made from coal, and recently several investigators in the United States have reported the use of various tests for this purpose. There is at present no method accepted as standard, however, nor is there even agreement as to the general type of test that should be used. Furthermore, because the details of most of the tests have not been worked out carefully, one investigator can not hope to duplicate the work of another. The extension of coke manufacture to new localities in the United States, and the increasing need for cokes of exceptional qualities made from the most economical mixtures, made it desirable to have some simple laboratory test which will determine whether given coals, alone or blended with other coals, are more satisfactory from the standpoint of coke strength than others of different cost. The work described herein has resulted in the development of a simple laboratory test which, it is believed, can be generally adopted in coal laboratories, and which will give concordant results even though performed by different investigators in different laboratories. The general method of predicting whether a coal or a mixture of coals will produce a strong coke, resistant to crushing and shattering, has been to correlate the known strengths of the cokes produced in commercial ovens with some measurable constituent or with some property of the coals, and then to use the relationship so found for forming an estimate of the coking strengths of coals unknown. Several such correlations have utilized the percentages of the various ultimate constituents of coal, such as the oxygen content and the hydrogen-oxygen ratio;(39)§ other correlations have involved the proportion of a, (3 and y compounds, (17'21,30 or of "oil and solid bitumens."(16,30) Also a relationship has been traced between the coking properties of coal and the rate of change of the resistance offered to the flow of an inert gas by fine particles of the coal while being slowly heated. Federal Regulations require MESA to regulate the exposure of workers to inhalation hazards in the surface work areas of coal mining and processing operations. (1) The purposes of this study are listed below: 1. Determination of candidate inhalation contaminants for surface work areas of coal mining and processing operations. 2. Selection of appropriate sampling and analytical methods. 3. Performance of qualitative surveys of 56 representative coal mining and processing facilities. 4. Preparation of handbook to provide guidance for inspectors sampling for these contaminants. This report describes the work which was done to accumulate the information which was used in preparing the inspector's handbook. Specifically, this report contains descriptions of the surveys which were performed, analytical results obtained from these surveys, findings and conclusions, and recommendations for additional research.

An essential mental equipment for planning exploration is the fullest possible knowledge of the way in which the orebodies occur in the region to be explored, also the realization that in no mining district is this knowledge complete, and that new facts of importance will be revealed to the explorer in every exploration if he is in the proper frame of mind to grasp them. The geology of the ore deposits of the Gogebic Range for a long time was thought to be relatively simple, but work in recent years, by several men, has proved that this is not the case. We now realize that we are far from knowing all the factors that have resulted in the localization of ore deposits. For example, we have long known that the intersections of the dikes and the foot wall were favorable places to look for ore, but only within the last few years have we learned that there are several horizons in the various members, well north of the foot wall, that are likely to carry ore. The influence of the numerous cross faults on orebodies is not known or appreciated beyond a general realization that they are important. Just how they may be favorable or unfavorable to the localization of ore is not known. Such elementary information as the positions of these faults is just beginning to appear on the mine maps. Such being the condition, one can hardly overestimate the importance to the various operators and fee owners of careful studies of conditions in their properties for the purpose of assuring themselves that they are not missing valuable ore—that they are doing all the exploration that their situation demands in order to secure maximum returns. Valuable ores have been missed in the past and will be missed in the future. Only with a complete knowledge of all the factors that have united to produce ore could anything else be expected. The purpose of this paper is to call attention to these facts briefly and to suggest a few of the principles that should guide effective exploration. The foremost principle is that the man who starts out with the idea that he knows all about the mine geology of the Gogebic Range is starting with a heavy handicap.
