THE township of Cloncurry is situated in the northwestern part of Queensland, about latitude S. 20° 42' 53" and longitude E: 140° 30' 25". Townsville is the port through which all the trade passes and is about 470 miles east-northeast of Cloncurry township. The Cloncurry copper district covers an area about 200 miles long by 40 miles wide. Unfortunately the mines are very scattered over this area, there being no large groups of mines. Mount Elliott mine is situated about 70 miles south from the township of Cloncurry, and Mount Oxide mine about 150 miles north of Cloncurry. The district has been known for the last 35 years, and in the early stages a large amount of capital was expended with little to show for it; but within the last four years the railway has been extended from Townsville to Mount Elliott and about 40 miles north of Cloncurry, which has made possible the treatment of the ores of the mines on this extension. The Mount Elliott company within the last few years has smelted and converted on its mine 169,688 tons. of ore for 20,554 tons of blister copper, containing 20,377 tons of copper, 35,642 oz. of gold and 28,841 oz. of silver, at a cost of about £33 per ton of blister copper, f.o.b. Townsville. This cost included all ' development, wages, salaries, general management, office, agency, legal expenses, freight, etc. The gold and silver contents would practically pay for freight to Europe, refining, realization charges, etc. The costs of supplies are as follows: Firewood 15s., coke, 75s., mine timber, 54s., and coal, 60s. per long ton; explosives: dynamite and gelignite, 50s. and blasting gelatine, 65s. 6d. per case.

Image-based rock fragmentation analysis methods have been applied by blast engineers to estimate rock size distribution for over 25 years. These methods utilize a wide range of image segmentation techniques, from manual to fully-automated, to delineate the edges of the rocks in the image. In most commercially available image-based rock fragmentation analysis systems, rock delineation results are converted to physical rock sizes by introducing one or more reference objects (e.g., basketballs or other objects with known geometry) to the scene as size-scaling references.

The conditioning of phosphate flotation feed with anionic flotation reagents was identified as a high- priority research topic during a beneficiation work- shop sponsored by the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR). FIPR subsequently solicited research proposals to identify the mechanisms of reagent adsorption, to determine scale-up relationships for conditioner design, and to investigate the effect of conditioning variables on reagent adsorption and flotation performance. The two-year research project was awarded to Jacobs Engineering. Somasundaran, Inc., the University of Florida Mineral Resources Research Center, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines assisted Jacobs. Two mechanisms of anionic collector adsorption were detected by spectrographic analyses and confirmed by microcalorimetric measurements. The mechanisms provided a sound technical basis for the empirical practice of conditioning phosphate flotation feed at a high percent solids. Tests performed in laboratory and pilot-scale agitated tanks indicated that power intensity may be used as a reliable scale-up parameter for anionic conditioning of phosphate slurry. Excessive agitator speed during conditioning was found to be detrimental to anionic flotation performance. Some dimensional ratios of anionic conditioners were found to be consistent with good utilization of agitation energy. Laboratory conditioning and flotation tests demonstrated that adsorption of collector onto phosphate and the subsequent recovery of phosphate in anionic flotation were significantly influenced by the quantity and quality of water used in conditioning. Conversely, the quality of water used in flotation was more influential on the recovery of quartz in the concentrate. A comprehensive survey of anionic conditioners and conditioning practice in the Florida phosphate industry was also performed during this project. The study clearly showed that flotation testing with laboratory conditions typical of scientific research gives different results than laboratory testing with simulated plant conditions. The effects of test conditions on laboratory test results should be carefully considered by investigators planning and conducting applied research.

Laboratory and pilot tests have shown that the grinding of some aluminas makes two populations appear : agglomerates’ and ultimate crystals’. Classical breakage functions (Size Mass Balance Method) aren't able to describe correctly this kind of grinding. So we have optimized a particular breakage matrix which takes into account the fact that the agglomerates can either be reduced in size or either be blown up to liberate the ultimate crystals. The models which were developed using this breakage matrix are in good agreement with the experimental results of the pilot tests. The industrial breakage functions were estimated from pilot breakage functions, using scale up prediction procedures and plant tests. The agreement between predicted and actual plant performance is excel1ent.A 20 % increase in capacity was predicted to be available by improving the grinding circuit classifier performances.

"Wastewater from ores processing is often polluted by molybdate and sulfate (SO42-) ions. Sorption is one of suitable methods for removing those pollutants when presenting in low concentrations. This work reports results on adsorption of sulfate and molybdate ions on metal modified (with barium - Ba and lead - Pb) and organic reagent modified (with Hexadecyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide - HDTMA) clinoptilolite. Zeolite’s modification with Pb, Ba and HDTMA increases its uptake capacity with respect to Mo(VI) at pH 3, with the uptake capacity decreasing in the order CL-Pb > CL-HDTMA > CL-Ba. Lead-modified clinoptilolite shows high uptake with respect to Mo(VI) in acidic, neutral and slightly alkaline conditions. The presence of SO42- in concentrations twice higher than the amount of Mo(VI) do not interfere with the Mo(VI) removal by CL-Pb. Zeolite’s modification with Ba and Pb renders it able to immobilize SO42- from water in the pH range 3-9. Kinetics of the uptake process is best described by the pseudo-first order kinetic equation. Increasing the initial concentrations of Mo(VI) and SO42- increases the removed amount of pollutants. INTRODUCTION Wastewater from copper-molybdenum ores processing is often polluted by molybdate and sulfate ions. Molybdenum (Mo) migrates easily in water and consequently the Mo polluted areas could extend for hundreds and thousands of meters (Ryzhenko, 2010). Molybdate anion is the only Mo(VI) species in natural water, i.e. at pH > 6.0. Its median freshwater hazardous concentration affecting 5% of the species (HC 5.50%) is 38.2 mg Mo/L (De-Schamphelaere et al., 2010). The marine water chronic toxicity (HC 5.50%) is assessed at 5.74 mg Mo/L (Heijerick et al., 2012). The predicted no-effect concentrations (PNEC) are 12.7 mg Mo/L and 1.92 mg Mo/L correspondingly for freshwater and marine water (Heijerick et al., 2012a). When sulfates present in drinking water in excess of 250 mg/L they cause a cathartic action (especially in children) in the presence of sodium and magnesium, and when the concentration exceeds 600 mg/L, diarrhea. When sulfate-rich effluents are discharged into the environment, they may increase the acidity of water bodies and soils (Guimarães and Leão, 2014). Because of the adverse effects to human health and the environment, limits are set for SO42- concentrations in waters and wastewaters in the range of 250 / 500 mg/L."

Introduction Gold exploration in the Dominican Republic has not received much publicity. The fact is, however, that a continuous program has been underway for some time. For the past two years, the Restauracion area of the western Dominican Republic, near the Haitian border, has been the scene of mineral exploration by the Dominican Department of Mines geologists, and later by geologists of Rosario Dominicana. The latter is a state-owned gold mining company and operator of the Pueblo Viejo open-pit gold mine. The exploration is for mineral deposits with the goal of finding another Pueblo Viejo-type deposit. Geology Exploration is being carried out in the western central Cordillera, the backbone of the Island of Hispaniola. Geology consists of quartz veins and veinlets and ramifying stringers carrying pyrite, barite, minor amounts of copper, and significant amounts of gold in places. They are associated with regional faulting in a complex of Cretaceous beds of andesites, dacites, argillites, siltstones, and shales. They are intruded by tonalites, diorites, and gabbros. Lesser amounts of zinc-lead mineralization occur in some locations. The showings appear as disseminations along the faults. To date, the work has been mostly geologic mapping - 1 to 50,000 with details on a scale of 1 to 20,000 and 1 to 10,000-stream and soil lithogeochemistry, and geophysics. Trenching and sampling were used to follow possible vein extensions. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Los Candelones district that was taken over by Rosario Dominicana. Here is where drilling has been initiated in the past months. The first hole drilled showed assays of 21 g/t (0.6 oz per st). The second hole intersected an interesting oxidized zone that reminded observers of the original Pueblo Viejo oxidized zone. A third drill hole went deeper than 75 m (246 ft), the depth to which the first two holes had been scheduled. An assay of 50 g/t (1.46 oz per st) was cut during drilling. A technique for studying the mechanism of the froth flotation process in which continuous froth removal does not take place but, instead, an equilibrium is reached between froth and pulp is described. A flotation cell, specially designed to facilitate equilibration, and froth and pulp sampling procedures are described. The main advantage of the technique is that the ability to measure the steady-state froth height allows froth-stability effects to be separated from pulp-process effects. In the flotation of hematite front quartz, linear relationships are found between airflow rate and froth height and between airflow rate and the ratio at equilibrium of mass of values in froth to mass of values in the pulp. A simple mechanistic interpretation of these results is given. It is suggested that froth-stability effects may play a more important role than hitherto allowed. In particular, the way in which concentration and size distribution of gangue particles may affect overall flotation rate is shown.

"This paper presents results of an experimental investigation of the sampling efficiency of a blunt cylindrical sampler oriented with respect to the oncoming flow. The number of particles sampled by the cylindrical blunt sampler and an isokinetic sampler is measured using the TSI Aerodynamic Particle Sizer. A technique is described to conven the ratio of the particles sampled into the sampling efficiency. The experimental data thus obtained is then compared with the impaction model of Vincent and Mark (1982) with the empirical constant determined from our experiment.. The comparison shows excellent agreement for 0° and 90° orientation.1.0 IntroductionCylindrical dust samplers are widely used in practice to determine the concentration of the airborne particulate matter. The sampler is simply a means to collect particles from the ambient, whose concentration is subsequently measured by some size selective techniques. Gravimetric and optical techniques are the two most commonly used methods to measure the particle sizes. While impactors are used in gravimetric analysis, Aerodynamic Particle Sizer, Aerosizer. Electron microscope, Coulter Counter etc. use the optical method to measure the particle sizes. The Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) and the Aerosizer are the new generation devices which employ the time of flight of particles within intersecting laser beams to determine the particle size.The introduction of the sampler in the free stream disturbs the flow pattern due to two distinct actions of the sampler on the fluid stream: one of them results due to the conformity of the flow to the geometry of the circular cylinder and the second one is caused by the flow into the suction orifice. If the sampler performance is determined by the number of particles entering into the sampler inlet relative to the number of particles present in the free stream, then the particle trajectory outside the sampler and into the inlet is the deterministic factor for the sampling efficiency. The particle trajectory inside the sampler is not important in this case."

ALTHOUGH there is now an extensive literature on the bleaching clays, not a great deal of material is to be found concerning the geological features of these deposits and their bearing on problems of exploration and development. At the same time, chemical and crystallographic research on the clay minerals during the past few years has laid a suitable foundation upon which to base conclusions of economic value drawn from field observations. All of the criteria and deductions herein presented are based upon extensive field work by the senior author, both in the United States and Canada, and when subjected to the ultimate tests of development and exploitation they have held up remarkably well, despite the fact that many of these conclusions apparently have not been reviewed in the literature heretofore. The nomenclature of the bleaching clays is rather confusing in the light of present-day commercial standards and has even led to litigation." The old term "fuller's earth" is largely based upon trade usage and the definition of the term therefore is dependent upon the changing standards of commerce. For statistical purposes the Bureau of Mines81 classes as "fuller's earth" all natural bleaching or filtering claylike materials that possess high adsorptive capacity without previous chemical treatmerit or activation. Conversely, the so-called activated or acid activated clays are now generally recognized as any clay mineral or mixture of the clay minerals whose adsorptive capacity has been developed to commercial standards by chemical or physical treatment. Therefore, without attempting to propose any additions to the nomenclature of bleaching clays, this paper will refer to naturally adsorptive clays and activable clays, respectively, for the two types indicated.

New Mexico ranks 2nd in uranium reserves in the U. S., which amounts to 15 million tons ore at 0.277% U3O8 (84 million lbs U3O8) at $30/lb (EIA, 2006). The most important deposit in the state is sandstone within the Morrison Formation (Jurassic) in the Grants district. More than 340 million pounds of U3O8 have been produced from these deposits from 1948-2002, accounting for 97% of the total production in New Mexico and more than 30% of the total production in the United States. Sandstone uranium deposits are defined as epigenetic concentrations of uranium in fluvial, lacustrine, and deltaic sandstones. Three types of sandstone uranium deposits are recognized: tabular (primary, trend, blanket, black-band), roll-front (redistributed, post-fault, secondary), and fault-related (redistributed, stack, post-fault). Several companies are planning to mine these deposits by in-situ leaching.

The object of this program was to extend the capabilities of visual paging systems both in size and function. The system developed uses the mine pager phone line for communication, monitoring, and remote control. A central station, using a minicomputer, transmits signals by phase inversion modulation of a 16,384 Hz carrier to as many as 999 remote units. The remote unit addressed returns An echo to indicate that it is functioning and, in the case of monitor units, to convey the monitor data. Magnetically latched display dis[c]s, which can be seen from both sides when posted, are used for visual paging. Lists of the addresses of posted pages, unanswered pages, and non-echoing units are prepared by the central station computer. The system was designed to be intrinsically safe and should operate for three months on a 12-volt lantern battery.

Keywords: Copper, ion exchange, sulfonic acid, bis-picolylamine, ion exchange modeling, ion exchange kinetics As part of an investigation into the feasibility of using ion exchange resins to recover copper from aqueous waste streams generated during the manufacturing of semiconductor devices, the uptake of copper onto two ion exchange resins was investigated. The resins studied were DOWEX G-26, a standard gel type sulfonic acid resin, and DOWEX M4195, a macroporous chelating resin with a bis-picolylamine functional group. The equilibrium and kinetic behavior of the uptake of copper were investigated over a range of copper concentrations with constant sulfate concentration and different levels of acidity. The homogeneous structure of the G-26 resin yields equilibrium relationships that fit the Langmuir equation, and equilibration times of less than 30 minutes. The uptake behavior of M4195 is complicated by the need to absorb co-ions to maintain electroneutrality, resulting in uptake profiles that change character with increasing copper concentrations, and extended equilibration times.

PART I SUMMARY CERTAIN relations between the formation of ore deposits and other geological processes are pretty generally accepted, namely: that many ore deposits are closely associated with igneous activity; that ore deposits accompany certain types of intrusive bodies, notably batholiths and stocks, and that they are concentrated near the tops of such bodies; that igneous activity occurs in belts of strong folding and faulting; that folding and faulting are greatest in basins of extensive sedimentation and least in areas of erosion or slight sedimentation; that areas of erosion or slight sedimentation and of heavy sedimentation persist over long periods and exert a major control over structure, igneous activity, and ore deposition; that cycles of erosion, deposition, folding and faulting, igneous activity, and ore deposition, have been repeated through geologic time resulting in rather definite periods in which metal deposits have formed. In short, ore deposition is but one phase of a series of closely related geological events. It is attempted in this chapter to point out the relations of these interreacting geologic processes to the distribution of ore deposits in the western United States. Three great periods of mineralization are recognized; pre-Cambrian, post-Jurassic, and late Cretaceous-Tertiary. In distribution the deposits of the three periods, with certain exceptions, show a concentration about two large positive areas, the Colorado plateau and the Columbia plateau, which suggests a causal relation. The most general age divisions of the rocks of the Cordilleran region of the United States are (1) pre-Cambrian, and (2) Cambrian and later rocks. The pre-Cambrian rocks are exposed mainly through the Rocky Mountain belt from the Canadian boundary southward to Arizona and westward through Arizona to southern California. They have commonly

In the design for a fire or smoke emergency, a main concern is maintaining an evacuation path that is free of smoke and hot gases. In ventilated tunnel fires, smoke and hot gases may form a layer near the ceiling and flow in the direction opposite to the ventilation stream. The existence of the reverse stratified flow has an important bearing on fire fighting and evacuation of underground mine roadways, tunnels, and building corridors. In the present study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program is used as a design tool to model floor-level fires in a ventilated tunnel. The fire is simulated by a diffusion flame of propane issuing from a circular hole on the tunnel floor. The computed profiles of velocity and temperature along channel cross sections are similar to those obtained experimentally. The computed reverse-flow layer length has been correlated with a densimatric Froude number with some success. A non-dimensional parameter involving the source fire intensity is also used for the correlation. These analyses show that an appropriate ventilation air current must be maintained to provide an evacuation path from the source fire clear of smoke and hot gases. It is believed that CFD modeling, employed correctly and interpreted carefully, can be a useful design tool for fire protection.

The Sarcheshmeh copper complex flotation circuit of plant No.1 consists of two identical north and south sections where each includes four rougher (each bank consists of 14 cells), two cleaners (each bank consists of 8 cells), two recleaners (each bank consists of 2 cells), and two scavenger banks (each bank consists of 10 cells). The reduction of feed grade along with a change in the mineralogical composition is the main reason of current lower concentrate grade (24%) compared with the design concentrate grade (32%). Because of a lower feed grade, the amount of rougher concentrate has decreased which in turn has significantly reduced the feed rate to the cleaner, recleaner, and scavenger banks. This has increased the mean residence time of the material in the cleaner section resulting in a lower final concentrate grade. A laboratory study showed that the final concentrate grade can be increased by 2-4% if one cleaner stage is added to the flotation circuit. In this research, based on the laboratory results, one cleaning stage was added to the current flotation circuit. In order to make this modification instrumentally possible in the plant, the final concentrate was gravity transported to the Mo-Cu thickeners. This released 2 pumps and associated tanks which made addition of one cleaning stage practicable. Finally, a part of the cleaner and scavenger cells were used as the third cleaning stage. This decreased the residence time in the cleaner and scavenger banks. After implementation of one cleaning stage in the south section of the plant, the performance of the circuit compared with the identical north section. It was found that at the same recovery, the concentrate grade of the south section increased by 2.5%. The promising results led to the implementation of adding one cleaning stage in all sections of the flotation circuit.

Achieving occupational health and environmental noise objectives is a major consideration in the planning or operational phase of resource development and industrial projects to meet the needs of the workforce and community and comply with legislative requirements. For material handling systems, ventilation plants, mobile equipment, process plants and fixed infrastructure, noise emissions need to be considered at the design phase. The preferred approach is to provide noise emission technical specifications, but in many cases this is not stipulated. An occupational noise requirement, such as ‘not to exceed 85 dBA at 1 m’, is often provided, but this will not achieve the required occupational or environmental noise objectives and may cause overly stringent requirements when they may not be needed. It should be noted that when developing the technical specification, measuring compliance needs to be taken into account as, in some cases, measuring may be very difficult or even not possible.This paper will discuss the requirements for providing an effective noise specification that ensures the environmental and occupational noise objectives are able to be achieved and that, once installed, compliance can be measured. It discusses planning such as when to set the objective, correlating the appropriate objectives for the environmental and occupational noise requirements, allowing for measurement tolerance, providing a suitable criteria and data format for the suppliers to respond to and methodology to measure compliance. Different phases of a project require different approaches to planning for noise management and these will be discussed in the paper. The use of Diesel fuel continues to increase. In the United States during 1951 over 120,000,000 barrels of Diesel fuel oil were sold. The railroads used approximately 43.5 percent of this volume; industries such as smelters, mines, and manufacturing plants used about 12 percent; trucks, busses, tractors and bulldozers 20 percent; water craft 14.5 percent; and the remaining 10 percent was consumed by gas and electric utilities, the military forces, and oil companies. These figures were calculated from data issued by the Bureau of Mines. 2/ Complete data for 1952 are not yet available, but it is known that by December 1952 over 13 3/4 million barrels of Diesel fuel per month were produced by the country's refineries and by April 1953 the monthly production had increased to 1 4,333,000 barrels.3/ Information on the properties of this type of engine fuel is very important to the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers. To supply this information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of Diesel fuel oil produced in refineries in this country.

The kinetics of oxidative dissolution of lead sulfide in solutions of nitric acid and sodium hypochlorite was studied using the rotating disk method and the factor experiment design. The dependences of the PbS dissolution rate on concentration of oxidant (HNO3 or NaOCl), temperature, disk rotation frequency, and duration of interaction were determined. The adequate kinetic models allowing calculating the specific dissolution rate at any combination of values of the influencing factors were obtained. As a result of the complex analysis of kinetic parameters, the modes of the each process proceeding were established, their macromechanisms were determined, and the limiting stages of the oxidative dissolution processes were revealed. The dissolution kinetics of lead sulfide in solutions of nitric acid was found to have several regimes. At HNO3 concentrations below 0.5 mol/L, the process proceeds in a mixed mode close to a diffusion-controlled. It is caused by low oxidative activity of HNO3 and considerable diffusional diffuculties at this acid concentration range. At the nitric acid concentrations more than 0.5 mol/L and less than 6.0 mol/L, the process was found to be kinetically controlled. The limiting stage of the interaction is the surface chemical reaction. The observed relatively high order of the dissolution rate with respect to the concentration of HNO3 was explained by the autocatalytic action of the acid reduction products. At nitric acid concentrations exceeding 6 mol/L, the process proceeds in a mixed mode close to a diffusion-controlled, and the dissolution rate sharply decreased that was explained by a decrease in the solubility of reaction products. When lead sulfide is dissolved in sodium hypochlorite solutions, at first time the amount of PbS transferred into solution remains close to zero. Gradually, as time goes, this amount begins to increase sharply. The dissolution rate rises and reaches the maximum value, further remaining constant. At the steady-state regime, the dissolution rate is independent of the duration of interaction and disk rotation frequency. The process was found to be kinetically controlled. The limiting stage is likely to be chemical reaction on the surface of solid lead sulfide. The obtained kinetic characteristics enlarge the database on hydrochemical oxidation kinetics of sulfides and can be used for the elaboration of the recommendations for the effective comprehensive exploitation of lead-bearing ores and concentrates.
