During 1944, substantial gains were recorded in practically every phase of the petroleum industry in Oklahoma. With the spotlight of activity focused on other states during the more recent years, the production momentum that was achieved in Oklahoma through the discovery and development of such outstanding pools as Oklahoma City, Fitts. and major pools in the Seminole area during the late 1920's and early 1930's was practically spent by the end of 1943. However, with much of the industry's exploratory efforts greatly reduced in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky, the strong demand for Mid-Continent crude and the optimism created by some discoveries in the state toward the end of 1943, Oklahoma has again become the recipient of much activity and interest, with its 1944 drilling activity, production and refinery runs to stills registering substantial gains over the preceding year. Development and Exploration Since the discovery of the West Edmond pool in April of 1943, with the substquent drilling and development boom, the scene of exploratory activity has shifted from the central. south and east portions of the state to the general trend of the . Granite Ridge, where leasillg and wild-catting were greatly activated within a wide radius of this high subsurface feature. Leasing activity, however, jumped the confines of the Granite Ridge trend and extended into all of the northwestern counties in the state. Seismograph activity at once began following and keeping pace with this shift in the leasing and exploration locale, by the concentration of a large number of seismograph crews in the area. At one time during the year,35 crews were concentrated in Oklahoma, the majority being west of the Granite Ridge and extending into the northwestern counties. To illustrate the increase in geophysical work done in the state during the year, records indicate that 377 crew months were worked in 1944, which is a 21 per cent increase over the 311.5 crew months activated in 1943. With the discovery in 1943 of several encouraging prospects and the finding of West Edmond as an incentive, drilling operations increased some 54.3 per cent, for a total of 1986 completions during the year. This is compared with a figure of 1287 for wells drilled in 1943, an increase of 699 wells. The industry, with a total of 1064 oil producers, enjoyed a success percentage of 53.6 per cent. Gas wells completed were 223, while 699 dry holes were drilled. In 1943, completions included 587 oil wells, 127 gas wells, and 573 dry holes. The number of oil producers completed during the Year was almost double the numher of wells in 1943. Of the total drilling wells completed in the state, 350, or 17.6 per cent, were wildcat operations—an increase of 5.1 per cent over the 194.3 total of 333. The wildcat success percentage was 13.4 per cent, 47 successful wells being completed for an average initial potential of 160 bbl. Good morning ladies and gentlemen - today I am in an enviable position for two basic reasons - No. 1, since I am first on the program, the audience should start out awake because those that partied too much last night are still asleep, but in their room, not here. No. 2, since copper, iron, and mining technology are not competitive, the veracity of my statements will not be questioned. Most such meetings I attend are based on the subject of energy and the coal industry does have competition from oil, gas, hydro, and nuclear. However, to counteract this advantage I am the usual engineer with a limited vocabulary by schooling, and the remaining vocabulary almost completely eliminated due to the presence of ladies. In relation to the past of the coal industry, we have not only suffered the competition of other energy sources mentioned before, but in addition have in the last 25 to 30 years been required to meet the demands of a vastly changing market. To explain this statement, I am sure many of you can remember 30 to 40 years back when most homes were heated by coal furnaces or stoves and shudder to recall the shoveling of coal into the fire and the carrying out of ashes with the attendent manual labor dust. Now this space heating portion of our sales has almost become non-existant due to an almost universal switch from coal to natural gas, oil, and electric heating. Actual figures show a decrease from 119 million to less than 28 million tons per year in less than a twenty year span. Also, most of you can remember the coal burning steam locomotives and the tremendous volume of coal they consumed and then the very rapid change to the diesel-electric locomotives, incorporating improved large diesel engines driving D C generators and electric drive motors, which resulted in cheaper motive power. This change over was so complete that the annual tonnage of coal dropped from 125 million to less than 2 million tons in 15 years. 'Actually, now it requires some considerable interrogation and traveling to find a locomotive still operating on steam.

In a previous paper,1 an experimental study of nitrogen dissolved in a cold-rolled ad heat-treated, low-carbon steel at 300° to 450°C yielded the equilibrium solubility relations and the concentrations of the two types of deject sites involved. In this paper, the probable identities of the defects that absorb nitrogen are restricted from the available evidence to screw dislocatioms for B sites, and to either micro crack surfaces or edge In a previous paper.' we reported an experimental study of the excess nitrogen solubility in a low-carbon steel produced by a combination of plastic deformation and nonrecrystallizing heat treatment. The concentrations of the defect sites that absorb the excess nitrogen were measured in terms of their capacities for nitrogen. Also measured were the equilibria of nitrogen distribution among the sites. Several problems and questions arise from these measurements. We should like a physical identifi- dislocations for A sites. The concentrations of these defects in experimental steel specimens are estimated from the concentrations of defect sites. finally, the influence of chemical composition upon the nitrogen-trapping defects—the relative numbers generated in deformation, the relative numbers surviving as temperature is raised, the apparent numbers observed, and the distribution equilibria-is discussed. cation of the defects involved and of the two kinds of nitrogen-absorbing sites, called A and B types, upon those defects; the concentrations of the defects themselves could then be computed. We should also like to know how exclusively the findings apply to the "X steel" used in the experiments and to what extent they apply to cold-rolled steel given no subsequent treatment. By considering the data already given, together with results from a few specific tests which will be reported as they are invoked, we are able to eliminate some interpretations altogether and to secure an acceptable though limited interpretation from among the remaining possibilities.

In the garden of national problems recognized by the American public, imports of mineral products is a hardy perennial. Concern for the security of mineral supplies has preoccupied nations since the industrial revolution and the mechanization of warfare. Since 1973, Americans have also been sensitized to the potential economic costs of overseas mineral supply disruptions and the cartelization of foreign production. Though oil prices have plunged since 1981, the import dependency issue remains topical. Political turmoil in Southern Africa reminds us that mineral supply disruptions will occur in the future as they have in the past. Producers of iron and steel, copper, and refined petroleum products seek protection from imports on national security grounds. The Reagan administration is proposing sweeping changes in the management of the federal mineral stockpiles. s an enduring need to take stock of the mineral trade position of the United States. This article considers the changing role that the U.S. has played in the twentieth century in non-fuel minerals trade. We begin by enunciating some principles that are useful in analyzing this trade. The changing pattern of trade in the 1900-1969 period is then reviewed. There follows a more detailed analysis of mineral trade trends in the 1970-84 period. Some consideration is given in the final section to the significance of non-fuel mineral trade for the U.S. economy. THE ECONOMICS OF U.S. MINERAL TRADE The allocation of non-fuel mineral products in the United States has in this century been accomplished primarily through the market mechanism. Except where trade barriers have distorted price signals, this means that mineral supplies have been obtained from the least cost source, with little regard for their country of origin. Mineral prices facing U.S. firms are sensitive to shifts in the domestic supply and demand, but are also sensitive to economic conditions overseas. The balance of trade in each mineral product has depended on the amount that is profitably produced and consumed domestically at the world price. The nation has produced exactly as much as it has consumed only by chance. U.S. demand for non-fuel minerals is derived from the demand for manufactures, farm commodities, and other goods whose production requires mineral products as inputs. The demand for such goods can be quite volatile, and in most industries moves cyclically due to its sensitivity to the level of aggregate economic activity. The supply of mineral products depends on the cost of extracting and processing mineral raw materials. These costs do not vary greatly in the short run. Because of these attributes of mineral markets, U. S. trade in mineral products fluctuates considerably from year to year. Most of this volatility results from shifts in domestic and overseas demand and from changes in exchange rates and trade barriers. Longer run changes in the mineral trade pattern can also be discerned. These depend on secular trends in demand and in the cost of mineral extraction and processing at home and overseas. The United States was originally endowed with extensive reserves of an array of mineral-rich ores and fossil fuels. It is also a nation with an entrepreneurial climate and technological capability conducive to extracting and processing those reserves. Not surprisingly, it has at one time or another ranked among the world's leading producers of a great many mineral products. With a population that is large and an economy that is technologically advanced by world standards, the U.S. has also been a leading consumer of mineral products. Because of its voracious appetite, the bulk of mineral products produced domestically has traditionally been consumed domestically as well. Net exports have been sizable only in those industries in which the nation has enjoyed an extraordinary cost advantage. A simple rnodel for interstitial solid solutions has been devised in which each solute atom interacts with the solzlent lattice in such a way as to exclude an integral number of nearest-neighbor sites from being occupied by solute atoms. The vemaining interstitial sites ave not affected. In calculating the entropy of such a solution the increase in the number of interstitial sites available to solute atoms due to the ozlerlap of blocked sites is taken into account. The ther-modynamic functions and the solute activity fov the solution rnodel are calculated. It is shown that considevation of the overlap sues vise to a correction term of the order 8' ( where 0 is the ratio of solute to solvent atoms) in the thevmodynamic functions of the solution and the solute activity. The theo,uetical equation for the solute activity was used to analyze the available data for the activity of carbon in austenite at three different temperatures. The use of a computer enabled many comparisons to be made between the experimental activity data and those predicted by both the complex blocking model and the simple, widely used blocking model in which the ozierlapping of blocked sites is not taken into consideration. Even though at the highest concentvations oj carbon the value of 0 is small it is shown that the best fit to the experimental data is found with the complex blocking model. RECENTLY it has been shown by analysis of gas-solid equilibriums that many interstitial solid solutions can be described by the quasi-regular solution model in which the partial energy of solution E, is independent of composition and, apart from a composition-independent term due to nonconfigurational factors, the partial entropy is that of an ideal solution. Dilute solutions of nitrogen in both bcc and fcc iron,' dilute solutions of oxygen and silver,' carbon in a Fe,' and dilute solutions of carbon in ? Fe2 are all quasi-regular. In addition many hydrogen-metal solutions, both dilute and concentrated (with the notable exceptions of the H-Ni and H-Pd systems), can be described by this model.3 However, it has been shown that, at various temperatures, solutions of carbon in ? Fe begin to depart strongly from quasi-regular behavior at low concentrations. A plot of the activity of carbon in ? Fe relative to pure graphite vs atom fraction of carbon (Cc) calculated from Smith's data4 begins to depart from the (nonlinear) plot for a quasi-regular solution at about Cc = 0.02. Several statistical models have been proposed to account for the thermodynamic behavior of carbon in y Fe. Darken and smith4 set up a model in which a carbon atom in its octahedral site in the fcc lattice has either one or no neighboring carbon atoms in the twelve nearest-neighbor octahedral sites. It is assumed that the number of carbon atoms having more than one nearest neighbor is negligibly small and that a solute atom does not interact with another solute atom located at a greater distance than the first shell of interstitial sites. Thus this model contains two characteristic interaction energies. Darken and Smith showed that this model gives reasonable agreement with the measured variation of carbon activity ac with composition. It is noteworthy that Darken and Smith concluded from their analysis of the activity data using this model that there was a repulsive force between carbon atoms in austenite which reduces the concentration of C-C pairs below that corresponding to random mixing. Recently Aaronson, Domian, and pound5 have considered in detail the statistical model developed by Lachere and by Fowler and Guggenheim7 and have shown that it is compatible with the activity data for carbon in austenite. In Darken's model the energy of solution of carbon in austenite is dependent on temperature and concentration; the departure from Henry's law arises from the concentration dependence of the energy of solution. In Aaronson, Domian, and Pound's discussion of the Lacher, Fowler, Guggenheim model the interaction energy wy between adjacent carbon atoms in austenite is strongly temperature-dependent. Aaronson et al . suggested that this temperature dependence of wy and hence the energy of solution of carbon could be explained either by the formation of clusters of carbon atoms (despite the repulsive nature of wy) or by the dual occupancy of the octahedral and tetrahedral sites by the carbon atoms. The San Bartolomt silver deposit was discovered by a United Nations team of geologists working with a counter- part team of staff of the Ecuadorian Government's General Directorate of Geology and Mines (DGGM). The Phase I project over five areas of operation during which this discovery was made was financed through a United Nations Development Program contribution of $860,000 and an Ecuadorian Government participation of about $680,000 equivalent. Existence of mineralization at San Bartolomé was first recognized in 1966 when a reconnaissance geochemical stream-sediment program was carried out over a 10 500 km2 (4,054 sq mile) area centered around the city of Cuenca in southern Ecuador. Over the course of this project more than 10,000 samples of stream-sediment, soil, and rock materials were collected. Average costs per sample were $10.00, as follows: collection, $5; sample preparation, $1.60; assay work, $3.40. Initially in the program (1965-1966) sediments were collected along all motorable roads and tracks. Routine analyses, originally by colorimetry and later by AAS, were for Cu, Pb, Zn and occasionally As, Ni, and Co. Discovery geochemical samples from the San Bartolomé drainage area were among the first to be taken in 1965. As luck would have it, the road along which this traverse was taken passes only some 100 m (328 ft) downstream from the mineralized suboutcrop. The relevant two streams sampled are of inconsequential size, some 1 m (3.3 ft) in width, with a limited flow volume throughout the year. Original anomalies were recognized through cold-extractable Cu/Zn analyses. The pH of all river waters was also recorded at sample sites. Resampling the discovery sediments when AAS became available showed total extractable values of between 150 ppm-300 ppm Zn, 550 ppm Pb, and 10 ppm Ag. In 1967 the first followup was by rough-and-ready means. Dithizone field-kits (THM) were used to rapidly test soils from the surrounding area. The area has no outcrop. This work allowed the definition of an area of interest of some 2 km (1.2 miles) x 500 m (1640 ft). Six approximately 1 km (0.6 mile) to 1.5 km (0.9 miles) lines spaced at approximate 250 m (820 ft) intervals were established and used for IP surveys and soil sampling at 50 m (164 ft) intervals. Where one of the lines crossed the westernmost geochemical discovery creek a first-priority geophysical anomaly coincided with a major Zn/Pb (and later Ag) soil anomaly. A pit was sunk and encountered mineralized vein material at a depth of 1.5 m (5 ft). This lucky glory hole confirmed the geochemical discovery and prompted systematic followup. Immediately, costeaning of the west bank of the discovery creek, the Quebrada Ocashuaico, was carried out and exposed weathered and leached mineralization. Nearly 100 mineralized veinlets ranging in thickness from 0.5 cm (0.2 in.) to 8 cm (3 in.) were exposed across the 180 m (59 1 ft) costean. Sixty mineralized veinlets were determined over a 90 m (295 ft) wide zone. Sampling delineated minable widths averaging between 0.16 and 0.31 kg/t (5 and 10 oz per st) Ag with associated copper (very sporadic) lead and zinc. Over the period 1968- 1972 a considerable amount of detailed work was completed: detailed IP, EM Turam, magnetic and mise-a-la-masse geophysics, very detailed soil- sampling, trenching, drilling and glory-hole drifting, and cross-cutting. Numerous problems were encountered: the area was found to be a most difficult geoelectrical target; zero outcrop; pyrite (nonargentiferous zones) associated with faulting; mineralized groundwater; extensive clay development; loss of diamond drill-core, and no two-dimensional surface information. This paper provides infonnation on selected technologies available for remediation of metal contaminated soils and industrial effluent solutions. Because some of the industrial sites are contaminated with organics (solvents, gasolines and oils), an effort has been made to introduce the most frequently used cost-effective cleanup methods, such as "bioventing" and "composting." The microorganisms involved in these processes are capable of degrading organic soil contaminants to environmentally harmless compounds: water and carbon dioxide. Heavy metals and radionuclides contaminated mining and industrial sites can be remediated by using adapted heap and dump leaching technologies, which can be chemical in nature or bio-assisted. The importance of volume reduction by physical separation is discussed. A special attention is devoted to the remediation of soils by leaching (soil washing) to remove heavy metal contaminants, such as chromium, lead, nickel and cadmium. Furthermore, the applicability of biosorption technology in the remediation of heavy metals and radionuclides contaminated industrial waste waters and acidic mining effluent solutions was indicated.

ME?s Arizona Conference was held at the Hilton El Conquistador resort in Tucson on Dec. 2 and 3, 2007. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The 2007 meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecturer and more than 25 technical papers that were presented in seven sessions. The sessions included environmental, geology, safety, metallurgy, mining, new projects and a special session on Mexico. Topics covered included mine closure, sustainable mining, exploration methods, health and safety issues, mining equipment and drilling. Much of the discussion at the conference concerned major new developments in the region?s copper mining industry. For example, Freeport-McMoRan?s new Safford Mine and BHP Billiton?s Pinto Valley restart were the topics of technical presentations. There was also much discussion among the attendees on the current and future price of copper, community relations, education issues and recruitment concerns. At the time of the conference, the price of copper hovered around $3.30/lb, up considerably from the 61 cents/lb in late 2001, when the industry was being challenged by world market conditions and a weakened domestic economy. Since then, strong demand from China helped push copper prices to record levels that at one time reached as high as $4/lb. The general consensus among the attendees is that the current price of around $3.30/lb will continue through 2008. Most attendees also expect increased corporate investments in the industry to continue. Copper mining in Arizona has been a major industry since the 1800s. In 2007, Arizona was the leading copper-producing state in the United States and produced more than $5 billion worth of copper. The copper mining industry in Arizona also produces byproduct gold, silver and molybdenum. Arizona is the second largest molybdenum producer in the United States.

THE American producers of silver are keenly alive to the importance of the silver problem and its vital effect on the mining industry in Montana and other States where precious-metal mining constitutes a basic industry. There are so many ramifications to the subject that one is tempted, no matter from what angle an approach is made, to digress along lines that inevitably lead into a maze of social, economic and financial problems, through which no clear pathway is marked, and regard¬ing which no definite opinion can be expressed, as the ultimate solution is dependent upon the policies adopted and carried out by the more important Governments with reference to their fiscal requirements and currency systems. The situation may be summarized in two questions First, what, if any, plan have the silver producers, as being the most directly interested, to offer in meeting the situation which will confront the industry upon the termination of purchases of domestic silver under the Pittman Act? Second, what, if any, assistance can be extended by the Government in connection with the problem? In answer to the first inquiry, while the matter has been the subject of discussion among the principal producers, they have been unable to formulate a defi-nite plan, principally because they have been and are dealing with a subject embracing many unknown fac-tors; and second, it has been felt that before any plan is adopted there should be indicated the extent to which cooperation on the part of the Government may be depended upon to enable a proper study of the situation to be made. In order to explain these rather cryptic statements, a general review of the situation may aid. Whatever differences of opinion there may have been in the past upon the subject of bi-metallism or the establishment of a fixed ratio between the coinage value of gold and silver, it will probably be conceded that it would be neither wise nor expedient to attempt a revival of this discussion, nor to undertake to solve the question by the adoption of such a remedy. Issues of contro-versial economics must be avoided, if possible-political economics will destroy rather than assist constructive effort.

At the turn of the century the U.S. had a gross ALVIN KAUFMAN Mineral Economist U.S. Bureau of Mines area slightly in excess of three million square miles, a population of 76 million, a gross national product of $37 billion (constant 1929 dollars) and a mineral production valued at $2 billion (1929 dollars). Some 60 years later its area had increased by 600 thousand square miles, population had risen 140%, gross national product was seven times greater and mineral production had grown to a value five times that of 1900. Of perhaps greater significance, however, were the changes wrought by technology. It was during this period that the "American Way of Life" was revolutionized by the introduction of the airplane and the automobile; man also took his first probing steps in the utilization of nuclear energy and pre- pared to unlock the secrets of space. It was during these six decades, also, that he learned to create additional new materials, some of which were from old sources such as plastics from petroleum and coal. These new materials have created competition and attendant problems for the traditional materials such as iron, copper, lead and zinc. Additional problems undoubtedly will be created by technologic advances in the future.

In this report the importance of diffusion in controlling the emission of methane in mines is examined. An in-situ diffusion parameter is defined and calculated for a hypothetical unfractured lump of coal in the Pittsburgh and Pocahontas No. 3 coalbeds. The values obtained are similar to those obtained with lump coal in laboratory experiments.

"Augered Cast-in-Place (ACIP) piles have long been used for deep foundation support in sands due to their high capacity and speed of installation. Very little information exists on the effects on capacity if the auger needs to be withdrawn from the hole prior to grouting. This condition can occur due to various reasons including grout plug ups, equipment issues, and grout supply delivery problems. It can become a major problem for the project team if this happens during production because the capacity of that pile is then in question, potentially resulting in re-design, installation of replacement piles and/or schedule delays. This paper compares the results of two high capacity test piles installed into a dense sand where one test pile was installed by first completely withdrawing the auger from the hole after drilling to the pile tip depth and the other test pile was installed utilizing conventional industry standard methods. Identical load tests were then performed on both piles to compare the effects of the two different installation procedures. The load test results were surprisingly similar in this case although the grout take required for the test pile installed in the pre-drilled hole was significantly higher to produce a similar grout return depth.IntroductionAugered Cast-in-Place (ACIP) piles are used extensively along the Texas Gulf Coast due to their combination of high capacity and speed of installation resulting in one of the most cost effective deep foundation systems relative to other options. Soil conditions in this region typically consist of alternating layers of sand and clay in the upper several hundred feet. ACIP piles are routinely installed to depths of over 100-ft to achieve the required capacity depending on the site specific soil conditions and therefore typically extend through and tip into sand layers. Occasionally, due to various reasons like equipment issues and plug-ups, the auger is withdrawn from the hole without grouting. Significant sand in the soil profile could lead to questions about the effect of the auger withdrawal on the pile capacity and load deflection relationship.This paper summarizes the results of two identical pile load tests performed on adjacent piles of the same length with the main difference being one was installed using the standard installation procedure and the other was installed by first completely withdrawing the auger from the hole after drilling to the pile tip depth. The load test results were then evaluated using load transfer analyses to estimate the effect of the withdrawal of the auger on the load-deflection characteristics and capacity."

"This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2016 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL), an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY), and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2016 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events and legislation that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported. The SNL data summarize budget estimates for worldwide exploration activities in 2016 for 30 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys, based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinumgroup platinumgroup metals (PGMs) and silver), base metals, (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash) and other commodities (aluminum, antimony, diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements (REEs), scandium, tantalum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium and yttrium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in SNL’s survey for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, REE and tungsten were compiled for the first time in 2010, and scandium, vanadium and yttrium were added in 2014 because of their increased topical significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL surveys. SNL budget estimates exclude coal, and oil and gas. A drill recorder is a permanent data collecting instrument. In open pit blast hole drilling the application of a drill recorder is that of data collection, drilling control, and drilling education. The various drilling parameters (weight, RPM, penetration, torque, and air) have a drilling correlation which can be demonstrated and documented by a recorder graph. When the correlation is physically put to use during the process of drilling, then the recorder has become a drilling tool and is no longer just a data collecting instrument, per se. By being able to maintain accurate records and drilling control, comprehensive studies of changes both operational and technological can be made. These are based on in-progress facts and not after-the-fact logs. To determine total drilling efficiency, drilling conditions must be documented and controlled. Field operations at American Smelting and Refining Company's Mission Mine have proved that by increasing drilling control, demonstration of parameter relationships, and drill monitoring, more economic efficiency can be obtained. In comparing results obtained with recorder control and conventional control a decrease of 14 percent to 36 percent of drill footage costs were obtained. The percentage of variance is dependent upon whether drilling is milled-tooth or carbide-insert bit drilling.

This paper, describing the leaching practice at the Calumet and Hecla mills, Lake Linden, Mich., is one of a series on milling methods and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The reclamation plant is located along the shores of Torch Lake at a slightly lower level than the concentrator itself. The entire location of the original concentrator, in connection with the present reclamation plant, has been ideal, lore particularly as the leaching and flotation departments are common to both units. After 15 years of operation and with the reclamation sands just a little more than half exhausted it would appear that the remaining life of the deposit could be worked by the present plan, without decided changes or renewals of plant or equipment.

In order to realize the efficient and sustainable development of mining and smelting activities and operations, the following issues are indispensable: (1) to investigate the up-to-date pollution control technologies of mine and smelter, (2) to promote those technologies, (3) to develop technologies which are environmentally friendly. This paper discusses the recent technologies for environmental conservation/prevention and their diffusion in the world, and also the key technologies required for the most desirable sustainable development.

Thiess Pty LtdÆs Australian Mining business unit used 7.6 PJ of energy in the 2007/2008 financial year. This represented more than 85 per cent of Thiess Pty LtdÆs total energy use and therefore meant that the Australian Mining business unit is required to conduct energy efficiency assessments and report publicly on the outcomes by December 2008 under the Federal GovernmentÆs Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) Act. Thiess Pty Ltd has a policy commitment to sustainable development throughout its operations. This includes minimisation of its carbon footprint and the Australian Mining business unit has a strong focus on efficiency in all of its operations. It approached the energy efficiency assessment as an opportunity to further improve and build on its energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction focus in the business. As a mine contractor, Thiess faced a number of challenges in designing an assessment process that would be both effective and efficient to deliver. For example, unlike most other companies involved in the Energy Efficiency Opportunities program, the energy use associated with the Australian Mining business unit is not fixed to any single geographic location in Australia. Mining vehicles are moved from site to site according to the specific requirements of mine owners and the timing associated with the commencement and completion of contracts. Thiess departed from a traditional æsite by siteÆ based assessment and designed a ærepresentative assessmentÆ approach that involved detailed investigation of data across all sites and a focused assessment on a single site.Data and analysis was an essential part of the assessment and indicators at company, mine and site level were essential in identifying opportunities and tracking progress. Forty-six potential energy saving opportunities were identified and four of these are currently being implemented. The projects being implemented are: payload management, automating mobile lighting equipment, plant idle time management, and turbo idle downtime. The potential savings from the four major projects that have been identified are approximately 150 800 GJ/annum, equivalent to 10 600 tonnes of CO2-e/annum with a simple payback period of less than two years. Beyond the fuel savings however, there are a number of other benefits from the assessment, including operational efficiency, reduced maintenance costs and even a potential reduction in the number of vehicles required to complete the work. The EEO assessment has significantly increased the importance and urgency of energy efficiency and facilitated the sharing of good practice across all Thiess operations. Not only have four projects been adopted for immediate implementation but a further pipeline of projects is available for future possible implementation. This case study describes: how Thiess conducted its assessment including the use of energy data and indicators, the opportunities identified that are currently being implemented, and the lessons learnt and how other organisations can use these to improve their approach to energy efficiency assessments. This case study is a more comprehensive version of a case study developed for the Commonwealth Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism. The assessment results reported in this case study are drawn from the Thiess Energy Efficiency Opportunities Report 2008.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted mineral investigations in the 1,227,000-acre Emigrant Trail study area of Nevada during 1992. During the USBM investigation of 25 areas of development interest, 190 mineral localities were identified and 260 rock and 50 alluvial samples were taken. At least 0.5 million troy ounces of gold, 2.3 million troy ounces of silver, 3.3 million pounds of copper, 10.9 million pounds of lead, 2.4 million pounds of zinc, 500 tons of alunite, 40,000 tons of sulfur, 9,000 pounds of mercury, and 21,000 pounds of tin have been mined from the area and vicinity. Adjacent to the study area, gold is being mined at large, open-pit gold mines, the Hog Ranch and Hycroft Resources, Inc., Sulphur mines, and new production is planned at the Rosebud LAC/Equinox. Hog Ranch mine is nearing depletion, but resources of more than 0.5 million troy ounces of gold and about 5 million ounces of silver are estimated for the Rosebud LAC/Equinox project and more than 0.4 million ounces of gold for the Hycroft Resources, Inc., Sulphur mine. Significant investigations are occurring at SP Ridge and other sites near Scossa and at the Dan claims in the Southern Calico Mountains. Precious opal, placer gold, and geothermal energy resources occur in the study area and vicinity.
