The A. P. Green Refractories Co. operates clay mines in ten states. Eight of these states have reclamation laws with which we have to comply and indications are that the U. S. Congress will pass a federal surface mining reclamation act in the near future. These regulations, in addition to the value of land in most areas, dictate that mining and reclamation be considered as a single operation. In many instances the land may be more valuable after properly planned mining and reclamation than before. Refractory clay, commonly called "fire clay" is defined as a siliceous clay rich in hydrous aluminum silicates, capable of withstanding high temperatures. It is deficient in iron, calcium, and alkalies and approaches kaolin on composition. Refractory clay is much more limited in occurrence and usage than common clay or shale. During 1971, common clays and shales were mined in 47 states with a total production of 45 million tons. Fire clay production was reported in 22 states with a total production of only slightly over 3 million tons.(1) Many of these producing areas are extremely limited in extent and production. Several are contained within a one or two county area. This reflects the unique geological conditions required for the formation or development of fire clay. The major fire clay producing areas in the United States are shown in Figure 1.

RiteR, Salt Lake City, Utah.—We have every reason to believe that oil flotation will soon come into general use as a final guard against slime losses in concentrating mills, not only in the case of zinc ores, but also in the case of other semi-precious ores. It also promises much as a primary process for the concentration of minerals that are not adapted to gravity methods. Moreover, modifications of the process involving selective or preferential flotation are gradually becoming understood, and will make it possible to eliminate pyrite and other minerals occurring as undesirable impurities in zinc concentrates. And what perhaps is of equal importance, further modifications promise an effective method of separating zinc blende from ores that are chiefly valuable for copper, lead, and precious metals, thereby making an asset out of zinc which has heretofore been a liability. The tendency of certain pulverized minerals to float on water, especially after having been in contact with grease, has been known to mill-men for a long time, and was formerly something to be deplored and to be striven against. All at once, this tendency has become a saving grace; and now, like tardy converts to a new faith, we are zealous advocates of something we once despised. I was once employed at a mine in the Tintic mining district of Utah— the old Eureka Hill property—where ores that were too low in value to warrant being sent to copper or lead smelters were treated in a combination mill. The ores contained gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc, manganese, arsenic, etc., in varying quantities and in varying mineral forms, mingled in a quartz and calcite gangue. The material was stamped fine and then concentrated on Frue vanners so as to make a smelting concentrate, after which the tailings were thickened and treated in amalgamating pans for the recovery of non-concentratable precious metals. In the amalgamating pans, under the influence of heat and agitation, a dark greasy froth or scum sometimes formed on the surface of the ore mixture. This froth or scum was composed mainly of mineral sulphides, and its occurrence might have meant only casual losses in the previous concentration, except that the phenomenon was accompanied by faulty amalgamation of the precious metals and by excessive losses in the mill tailings. Grease and oil, present by accident, were the cause of the trouble. Whether the intense vibration in the mill, due to the pounding of the heavy stamps, had caused small particles of grease to be shaken loose

As partial implementation of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM), Department of Interior, has requested each state to inventory hazardous abandoned mining areas within their boundaries. Primary interest is in such areas .as unstable waste-banks, subsidence and slumping, contamination of water supplies, and preservation of overall aesthetic qualities through reclamation. In addition to the concern expressed for abandoned mining areas, the legislation requires a complete inspection of operating mines quarterly and a partial inspection monthly. In Arizona copper has been mined for over 100 years and coal and uranium mining promises to expand in future years. The OSM requirement for a waste inventory and frequent monitoring of Arizona's large, widely spaced mines places a severe demand on limited personnel and operating budgets. Remote sensing by satellite provides an attractive and effective approach to aid the inventory and monitoring requirements of the OSM legislation.

Bumper subs are currently used in offshore operations to permit a constant weight to be carried on the bit while drilling, regardless of the vertical motion imparted to the drill pipe by drilling vessel heave. As shown in this paper. the vertical motion of the lower end of the drill pipe (the bumper sub end) may be appreciably greater than the vessel heave. Therefore, the necessary stroke of bumper .rubs for successful operation is greater than thought in fie past. Also, there is an appreciable tendency of the drill pipe to buckle above the unbalanced type of bumper sub. Thus, more drill collars than previously used should be carried above unbalanced bumper subs to keep drill pipe straight. INTRODUCTION Drilling bumper subs are placed in the drilling string for various reasons. This paper is concerned with their use only as an expansion and contraction joint while drilling from a floating rig. In this application the bumper subs are normally located just above the drill collars and their function is to allow the driller to maintain accurate weight control on the bit regardless of up-and-down movement of the drilling vessel. This paper analyzes the effects of bumper subs on the drilling string and presents recommendations for their future use. When subjected to vertical oscillations, the drilling string behaves like a long, distributed system of mass and spring. The magnitude of vertical motion at the bumper sub is always greater than the heave of the drilling vessel due to the dynamic reponse of the drilling string. The ratio of these motions increases with the length of the drilling string, and may reach values of 1.5 or even 2 with strings 16,000 ft long. Thus, the total travel required in bumper subs can be considerably more than the motion of the drilling vessel. Lack of knowledge of this fact could have contributed to problems previously experienced with bumper subs. This fact can also lead to fatigue problems in the drilling string for very deep wells. Satisfactory operation should be obtainable whether hy-draulically balanced or unbalanced bumper subs are used in the drilling string. Theoretically, the balanced sub is preferable since its use does not require placing drill collars above the bumper sub to prevent drill-pipe buckling, an inherent characteristic of the unbalanced bumper sub. The current method of calculating weight of drill collars required to prevent helical buckling of drill pipe above unbalanced bumper subs is erroneous. Placing drill collars above the sub to prevent drill-pipe buckling has the same effect on dynamic response as increasing the length of the drilling string by an equal weight of drill pipe. Thus, total travel required in the subs is increased. Means for calculating the correct weight, which is much greater than previously thought, are given in this paper. BALANCED VS UNBALANCED BUMPER SUBS A drilling bumper sub is essentially a telescopic joint capable of transmitting torque at every position of its stroke. Thus, it allows the operator to isolate the weight of the drilling string from the weight of the drill collars above the bit. This permits the driller on a floating rig to maintain accurate control over the weight on bit — a control that is unaffected by vertical motion, due to wave and tide action of the drilling vessel. UNBALANCED BUMPER SUBS The unbalanced bumper sub is simply a splined tele~copic joint (Fig. I). Ordinarily, this arrangement will operate satisfactorily, but the presence of drilling fluid under pressure results in a pressure force that acts downward on the drill collars and bit, tending to open or extend the bumper sub. This downward force is equal to the pressure drop across the bit times the area indicated by diameter d2 in Fig. 1. Denoting this force by Fd, and the pressure drop across the bit by ?p yields Fb = (p/4)d22(?P) .........(1) There is also an upward-directed force given by Fu = (p/4) d22-d21)(?p) .......(2) which puts the drill pipe immediately above the bumper sub in compression, resulting in helical buckling. However, buckling is actually more severe than expected in that buckling occurs as if the compression were equal to Fd, rather than to Fu. This surprising phenomenon is well known as far as tubing is concerned;1-3 but, in contrast with the case of tubing, this force may shorten drill pipe only a few inches. Thus, this cannot explain the operating difficulties that sometimes have been encountered. However, having the drill pipe in compression and helically buckled is contrary to current practice; therefore, drill collars whose weight in mud is equal to the force Fd should be added above the bumper sub. Abstract -Auriferous, bedding-parallel veins occur in zones of carbonaceous, argillaceous and sulfidic turbidites in the Lower to Middle Cambrian sandy flysch of the Goldenville Formation. The ?34S values for vein and wall-rock arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite, and for regional pyrite and pyrrhotite, are highly positive. The values are similar to those from Cambro-Ordovician sediment-hosted deposits of other types, and display trends that increase upward in the stratigraphic sequence. The similarity in composition of vein and wallrock sulfides indicates a seawater-sulfate source for sulfur, derived from the enclosing rocks at the time of vein formation. The upward increase in ?34S values is consistent with closed system sulfate reduction in the anoxic portion of a stratified water-column. Published ?18C and ?18O values for Meguma Group vein carbonates are unlike those of other gold-vein carbonates, but are similar to those of diagenetic-metamorphic carbonates from the Meguma Group and elsewhere. These data indicate that the source for the vein-related sulfides and carbonates may be the host strata; possibly the arsenic and gold were derived from the same source.

Nodular-graphite cast iron (GGG) is a material similar to steel, and one which exhibits excellent properties, in particular for components exposed to pressure. GGG cast iron has been used in many cases when sinking mine shafts with conventional tubbing. With linings made of cast iron tubbings (the backfill concrete is not integrated into the calculations, and merely serves as bedding) the properties of the cast iron can be made full use of, provided the tubbing is made to the appropriate cross-section. Calculations have shown that better static values can be arrived at when using cross-sections other than those of tubbings made to conventional German standard. The cross-sectional design of the new types of shaft lining made from GGG is to be developed on these lines irrespective of the cast iron structure being only stressed component or its restistance function being combined with the one of concrete. GGG 50 is used for the first time to make the reinforcing inner liner of a main shaft currently sunk in Germany. The physical properties of nodular-graphite cast iron, strength and deformability, suggest that, in the future, its application will not be restricted to shaft support but also in tunneling. New moulding techniques with better three-dimensional modelling resulted in new tubbing designs as installed e.g. for the Hannover underground at present. Shield-driven tunnels have to withstand earth and water pressure, apart from axial machine loads. In this field time is money as well. Therefore easy handling and quick installation are necessary for successful, use. Last but not least, safety is of first-order importance for work in shaft sinking and tunneling. Cast iron lining systems, accordingly, are adequate systems, in particular for excavations underneath water for transport systems and for goods and passengers.

"Nickel and cobalt are the main value metals in nickel laterite ore. Cyanex 272 is an extractant used to separate nickel from cobalt present in leach solutions. Previous studies demonstrated the extraction of cobalt, magnesium and manganese at pH 5 using Cyanex 272 as extractant, while nickel remained in aqueous solution. However, it is difficult to separate cobalt from a solution containing magnesium and manganese. One possibility to change the metals’ behavior during the solvent extraction process is to change the mixture of extractants used. In order to study the solvent extraction of cobalt from a solution containing manganese, magnesium and nickel, a mixture of two extractants was investigated. Cyanex 272 (CY) and Versatic 10 (VC) were selected as extractants in the organic phase. The extractant concentrations used were: 20% CY; 15% CY, 5% VC; 10% CY, 10% VC; 5% CY, 15% VC; and 20% VC. In all cases, kerosene was used as a diluent, at 80 vol%. The synthetic leach solution used in this study was prepared according to the composition of a typical nickel laterite leach solution. The pH value of the solution used was 5, and the aqueous/organic ratio used in solvent extraction testwork was 1/1. The study has shown that the composition of the organic extractant mixture did not increase cobalt separation.INTRODUCTION Sulfide and laterite deposits are the main sources of nickel. However, production from nickel sulfide ores has been decreasing over the years, relatively speaking, increasing the focus on the exploitation of laterite nickel ores (McDonald & Whittington, 2008). Laterite ore deposits are found in tropical and subtropical regions. A characteristic of laterite ores is the presence of a complex and heterogeneous mixture of metals (Crundwell, Moats, Ramachandran, Robinson, & Davenport, 2011; Georgiou & Papangelakis, 1998; Gupta, 2003; Kesler & Simon, 2015; Moskalyk & Alfantazi, 2002; Oliveira, 1990). Nickel concentrations in laterite ores are typically 1–2% (Dalvi, Bacon, & Osborne, 2004)."

Net Present Value Impact of Discount Rate The Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method of valuations is universally used and accepted. The main criticism of the method is that it does not recognize the value of projects long life projects. This can be seen in the preceding graph where the present value of cash flows in later years are small for discount rates over about 10%. This graph covers a project that has a 25 year operating life. It is clear from the low height of the NPV bars at 10% and 15% in the last years of the project that an additional 25 years would add almost no value to total project NPV. As an example of this effect, an colleague undertook the evaluation of a pulp and paper project. The plant could be justified, but it was not possible to justify planting the trees as they took too long to grow and so had not appreciable NPV. The plant had to purchase wood to feed the plant.

Previous studies and research efforts have shown that noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a problem in the U.S. mining industry. This is especially true in surface and underground coal and stone mining where large, noisy equipment predominate. Workers in coal preparation and stone processing plants have also been found to be subject to high sound levels that could potentially cause NIHL over prolonged periods of exposure. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers have been conducting a cross-sectional survey of equipment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry to estimate the potential for NIHL within the mining community. One commodity recently surveyed was the extraction of sand and gravel from surface pits and by river dredging. Little is known about the noise environment and worker exposures in these environments, where processing and mining equipment similar to coal and stone are employed. To address the potential for NIHL in the sand and gravel industry, sound levels on and around the dredges and processing equipment were recorded to identify areas of high noise levels. Full-shift worker dosimetry, in conjunction with task observations, was documented to determine the relationship between exposure and source. This paper presents research examining noise on dredges, in several surface mine sand and gravel operations and in the processing facilities. The locations where workers are likely to be overexposed and were found to be most susceptible to noise overexposures are reported. Results indicate that there are areas on the dredges (crane, suction pumps, and diesel engines) where sound levels greater than 90 dB(A) are present. In addition, crushers and screens used in the processing of the sand and gravel also generate sound levels greater than 90 dB(A). Although no surveyed worker exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Permissible Exposure Level (PEL) of 90 dB(A) TWA8, laborers, mechanics, oilers, helpers, pickers, and greasers are the workers likely to be exposed to hazardous sound levels and thus develop NIHL over time. Knowledge of the equipment noise, area sound levels, and worker dose levels is information that management and employees can use to reduce exposures. Exposures can be reduced in certain areas through administrative controls and through engineering controls applied to the noisiest equipment.

In March of 1994, Dynatec Mining Limited entered into a contract with PCL Civil Constructors to carry out the underground excavations for the Algonquin Power Corporation’s15 Megawatt Nagagami hydro-electric power station located near Hearst, Ontario, Canada. Dynatec completed the work for this project in early October 1995. Dynatec Mining Limited’s work included the excavation of a 175 meter long penstock driven at a grade of -25% to a 4000 m3 powerhouse located 50 meters below the intake elevation. A 1200 meter long tailrace was driven from the Nagagami River to connect with the powerhouse. Two 50 meter raises were driven from the powerhouse to surface to pro-vide access for equipment and personnel. The excavation of the tailrace tunnel(5.8m x 5.9m) was completed using Dynatec’s Long Round Jumbo Technology.

The problems facing the metallurgical industry from the viewpoint of the range of unacceptable residues, flue dusts and slags currently produced from the electrolytic zinc process, electric arc furnace scrap treatment, and blast furnace operation in lead smelting and the Imperial Smelting Process (ISP) are addressed. The application of the Ausmelt technology is discussed and analysed for the pyrometallurgical treatment of zinc plant residues, steel plant flue dusts and lead blast furnace and ISP slags, as well as the more complex issue of smelter modernisation to avoid production of zinc plant residues in the future. Processes developed from pilot work are described and indications of the economics of treatment of electrolytic zinc plant neutral residue and jarosite are given.

Impacts to ground water from mining are being comprehensively regulated in Nevada through specific requirements for design, construction, operation, permitting and closure. This program is the nation's most comprehensive for control of activities at mining operations which have the potential to cause groundwater degradation. It encompasses virtually all types of facilities, including placer, physical separation, flotation, testing, leaching and milling. Minimum design requirements are established by regulation, and must be met by each facility. Site-specific monitoring requirements are established for each facility, and are heavily emphasized. Regulatory and technical requirements and relevant permit conditions are presented and discussed.

INTRODUCTION Creep of rock in situ, like most rock mass behavior, will be largely governed by the behavior of the natural discontinuities -- bedding planes, faults, and joints, in particular, Several past studies have investigated various aspects of the time-dependent deformation of rock discontinuities; examples include Amadei and Curran (1980), Engelder and Scholz (1976), Johnson (1975), Kaiser and Morgenstern (1979), Solberg et al. (1978), and Wawersik (1974). These studies have provided much insight into the general phenomenon, but they have also produced some inconsistent conclusions and left many unanswered questions. This paper will attempt to shed some light on one of these questions: What is the influence of stress level on the creep of unfilled rock joints? The discussion will follow a two-part approach to the problem: (1) laboratory creep experiments on small scale jointed specimens, (2) a simple theoretical mechanism to explain, at least in qualitative terms, some of the results from the experimental program. EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM Uniaxial creep tests were conducted on intact and jointed samples of a specially formulated gypsum plaster "synthetic rock." Synthetic rock materials have several advantages over natural rock for long-term creep testing: (a) higher creep rates, (b) lower strength and therefore lower loading requirements, (c) simpler specimen preparation, and (d) more controlled and consistent properties. Gypsum based plasters have been used previously in studies of short-term strength and deformability of jointed samples (Patton, 1966; Einstein and Hirschfeld, 1973). Furthermore, Williams and Elizzi (1977) demonstrated that natural gypsum, at least, creeps in a manner similar to that of most other creep-susceptible natural rocks.

SustainabilityÆs imperative of economic development in tandem with social advancement and environmental protection is widely accepted, but much debate remains about the practical implications for the minerals processing technologies and practices for the future. Experience in other industry sectors however suggests that sustainability can be a value-adding framework for innovation in processing technologies, business models and management systems. This position paper explores how sustainability can drive innovation in minerals processing, by reviewing pertinent ideas and experiences gained in non-minerals sectors. Sustainable innovations can generally be broadly ranked from incremental to transformative, with each category having its own typical improvement potential, timescale and technological and operational challenges. This leads to a æmud mapÆ for sustainable innovation in minerals processing with three distinct tracks: eco-efficient operations; sustainable plant design and sustainable processing. Competing models for the sustainable innovation process through either forecasting or back-casting, have in common the strong reliance on vision, perspective and competency, which in turn highlights the importance of sustainability frameworks. Such sustainability frameworks provide normative goals and option elicitation prompts to assist with the analysis of current processes and scoping of more sustainable alternatives. A comparative analysis of five prominent environmental sustainability frameworks revealed three cross cutting sustainability themes that challenge current resource processing technologies and practices. These are: fate of materials (zero dissipation of materials); compatibility of materials and processes; and materials intensity of industrial products and processes. Although the sustainability concepts presented in this paper have not been extensively road tested in the minerals processing industry, there is ample evidence that recent initiatives in the Australian resource sector illustrate the applicability of the proposed framework. It is therefore argued that more in-depth assessment of sustainable innovation concepts would be a valuable contribution to the sustainable resource processing theory and practice.

The recovery process in 400 Monel filings was followed, principally, by using the Warren-Averbach technique of X-ray peak profile analysis. The deformation fault probability, a, was 0.006 in samples of unannealed filings. a , the twin fault Probability , was approximately 0.002 in samples of unannealed filings. Both a and 0 were found to "anneal out" at 600°F. The effective particle size and mzs strain increased and decreased in the (111) direction, respectively, with increasing annealing temperature. The actual particle size was found to be almost equivalent to the effective particle size. Tile small values of deformation and twin fault probabilities accounted for the similarity in values of the effective and actual particle sizes. Stored strain energy and dislocation density calculations based on rms strain decreased with increasing annealing temperature. The dislocation density decreased from 10" per sq cm in the unannealed filings to 10' per sq cm in the partially re-crystallized filings. The square root of the dislocation density based on strain to that based on particle size indicated a random dislocation distribution in the unannealed filings. The dislocation arrangement changed to one with dislocations in cell walls with increasing annealing temperature. THE recovery processes which occur in metals are generally thought to be a redistribution and/or annihilation of defects.' Investigators' have shown that recovery processes can be characterized by X-ray line-broadening analyses. Michell and Haig4 measured the stored energy of nickel powder by calori-metry and found the value to be greater by a factor of 2.5 than that from X-ray data obtained by the Warren-Averbach technique.= Minor increases in particle size occurred up to 752°F (recovery), while above 752°F the particle size increased greatly due to recrystalliza-tion. X-ray microstrain values decreased between room temperature and 392"F, remained constant from 392" to 752"F, and decreased from 752°F to a negligible value at 1112°F. Faulkner developed an equation for calculating stored strain energy based on X-ray line-broadening data which gave a closer correlation of measured and calculated stored strain energy based on the data of Michell and Haig. The stored strain energy released during recovery is predominately dependent on the decrease in dislocation density which was p-enerated from cold work.7 Stored energy has been measured8 in alkali halides during recovery and recrystallization and 80 pct of the stored energy was found to be released during recovery. Dislocation distributions have been studiedg in a number of fcc metals by thin-film electron microscopy. Howie and Swann" found the stacking fault energy of copper and nickel to be 40 and 150 ergs per sq cm, respectively. ~rown" has pointed out that these stacking fault energy values should be corrected to 92 and 345 ergs per sq cm, respectively. The dislocation distribution of a metal is directly dependent on the stacking fault energy of the system. Metals of high stacking fault energy such as aluminum cross-slip readily and do not form planar arrays of dislocations. Metals of lower stacking fault energy such as stainless steels" do not cross-slip readily. Cold-worked nickel has been found to form a cellular dislocation structure after annealing.13 The relatively high stacking fault energy of nickel and copperlo to a lesser extent favor cellular structures of dislocations rather than planar arrays after deformation. The present study of recovery was carried out on a Ni-Cu alloy (Monel 400) to compare with prior studies for pure nickel and pure copper. X-ray line-broadening techniques were used to measure the effect of recovery temperature on rms strain and particle size and the results were compared with previous studies on copper'4-'7 and nickel., Calculations were also made on stacking fault probabilities, dislocation density, dislocation distribution, and stored strain energy as affected by temperature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The nominal analysis of the Monel 400 used in this investigation was: 66.0 pct Ni, 31.5 pct Cu, 0.12 pct C, 0.90 pct Mn, 1.35 pct Fe, 0.005 pct S, 0.15 pct Si. The annealed material was cold-reduced in two batches, one 50 pct and the other 80 pct. It was originally planned to conduct line-broadening studies of these bulk samples; however, rolling textures that developed produced low-intensity peaks which were not suitable for line-broadening analysis. Filings were prepared at room temperature from both the 50 and 80 pct cold-reduced specimens, series A and series B, respectively, and were not screened prior to heat treatment or X-ray studies. Heating to the annealing temperature, 200" to 120O°F, was accomplished in a matter of minutes in a hydrogen atmosphere. Following heat treatment, some of the filings were mounted and polished for microhardness measurements with a Bergsman microhardness tester, using a 10-g load. A G.E. "The spontaneous combustion of coal storage pile(Gangue Hill) is one of the seriously threat encountered in coal mining and storage. The dynamic accumulation of internal heat in coal storage pile(Gangue Hill) provides continuous heat-source for coal spontaneous combustion. Combined with the features and characteristics of coal pile storage, a technology of heat pipe(HP) is applied to enhance heat transfer. In order to prevent spontaneous combustion of coal storage piles (hillock) due to regeneration, a method using heat pipes to destroy the heat preservation conditions of coal storage pile(Gangue Hill) is proposed, which reduces the risk of coal spontaneous combustion and prevents coal fire. A theoretical model of Coal-Thermosyphon has set up to analysis the radius of cooling effect area quantitatively. An experimental equipment of the heat transferring in a set of heat pipe, which used to study the influence on coal pile temperature distribution, has been designed. Results show, the heat pipe has a significant effect on inhibiting the coal spontaneous combustion process by destroy the heat preservation conditions of the coal. Under the experimental conditions, the most obvious coal temperature decline appears at radius 20.0mm around the pipe, dropped from 45.8? to 32.5?, a decline of 29%; the coal pile temperature at radius 420mm from 12.9? to 12.4?, a decline of 3.87%. And the research offers an effective and new approach in its application and promotion for preventing and controlling in coal spontaneous combustion.INTRODUCTION China is one of a few countries which utilize coal as the major source of energy in the world, and is the one whose characteristic of energy structure is rich coal, deficient oil and lean gas. Relatively speaking, China is abundance in mineral resources. The coal, which is the fundamental resource in the process of industrialization, is the main energy in china. Thus China cannot alter the situation of coal consumption dominated a leading role in its energy structure in near term.A massive of coal gangue would be produced every year in China with the mining activities. And it’s estimated that almost 360 million tons gangue were dumped in 2003, accounting for 10 percent of the whole coal production. Huge numbers of coal waste piles have more than 2,600 seats, which cover an area of over 12,000 hectares. Worse more, the coal gangue still has an annual growth rate of 100 million tons. Toxic smokes and greenhouse gases are discharged directly and prolongly into the atmosphere due to coal gangue spontaneous combustion. Even worse, waste dump explosion cause massive losses and are able to endanger the safety of workers. For example, one waste dump of the NO.4 Mine of Pingdingshan Coal Group Co., Ltd. occurred twice of explosions in 2005, and about 3.13 million tons of waste rocks were thrown within the range from 100 to 300 meters, eight people were killed and 122 rescuers and miners were burned, and economic losses were estimated more than 3,000 million."

Following GyÆs earlier proposals for the use of StudentÆs t-test, a simplified, effective method and philosophy are proposed to test for maximum tolerable bias in data sets as well as in sampling devices. The philosophy of testing is particularly emphasised to derive important practical implications in terms of decision-making and risk control. Conclusions are offered which should equally matter to manufacturers and users of sampling equipment.

Leinster Nickel Operations, located in Western Australia, consists of an underground and three open pit mines in relatively adverse ground conditions. This paper reviews our ground control practices in the open pits, covering aspects of ground support, wall control and monitoring. These methods have been effective in allowing mining operations to continue beneath unstable slopes. In particular, the use of Ground probe?s slope stability radar has enabled the Harmony open pit to safely operate for months following indication of failure from traditional methods. This case study highlights the benefits of investing in appropriate slope stability monitoring systems.
