Block cutter machines have been extensively used in natural stone industry, which is a sub-section of mining industry. In this study, the costs occurring in plate losses cut from Bilecik beige marble with a circular saw block cutter machine have been predicted using Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques. One of SPC techniques is Shewhart control charts such as mean control chart. These charts have been efficiently at determining the plate losses. The costs occurring in plate losses have been calculated by using the result of Shewhart control chart. Finally, this study presents the necessity and usefulness of SPC techniques in assessment of natural stone industry.

CARBONIFEROUS CLAYS FROM a geological standpoint, but scant attention has been paid to fire-clay beds. Only within the last few years have they been the subject of individual investigation, prior to this time having been considered only in their relation to coal seams. While the relative importance of coal and fire clay is still immeasurably in favor of coal, yet an industry as large as that of fire clay is entitled to a measure of attention. A discussion of the Carboniferous clays is practically a discussion of the clay beds in the Appalachian basin, since more than 90 per cent. of these clays mined are from this region. The clays are confined to the northern end of the basin, or the States of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland and West Virginia, ranking in importance about in the order named. The clay deposits of the Carboniferous period have been divided into two classes; those found in the Pottsville conglomerate series of rocks, and all those that are found in the formations above, for the reason that the clay beds above the Pottsville series all resemble each other in properties, composition and appearance, and all are distinctly different from the bed found in the Pottsville formation. The bed of clay found in the latter formation is unique in that flint clay is practically restricted to it. (A variety of flint clay is occasionally found in these upper deposits but this is in such small amounts as to be negligible.) Carboniferous clays occur between stratified rocks; sandstones, limestones, etc., in the same manner as coal veins. They are often accompanied by a coal vein although where the clay is of a workable thickness the coal is generally too thin to work. The clay beds are sometimes known by the name of the coal seam at which horizon they occur. Clay beds may be from a few inches up to 20 ft. in thickness. They may consist of all soft clay all flint or both soft and flint.

The full realization of the potential of computers in geological in- formation system demands new approaches to the machine representation of information. At the same time, the feasibility of such a system, particularly in commercial field, demands greater freedom in input preparation and a degree of standardization in the arrangement of subject matter system. The paper describes some of the basic notions of project "GEOSEMANTICA 70". The aim of the project is to devise means of storing real geological informations in a machine rather than the representation of the information in human language form. This is seen as the only long-term solution to the problems of the complex vocabulary of geology and the complex syntax of geological description. Effectively, a machine language is being defined, consisting of a set of symbols and a date structure for representation of geological and related information. Beyond this, is the definition of a set of rules allowing the use of constrained text as an input/output medium. The investigation is oriented primarily to the representation and handling of information about mineral deposits and the associated geographic, economic and engineering information.

Current state-of-the-art microweighing technology represented by the Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) is utilized as the basis for a new generation of Personal Dust Exposure Monitors (PDEM's). Two design configurations are presented. The first is an end-of-shift analysis system which uses small TEOM-PDEM cannisters that replace the filter cartridges in the current PDEM system. All other components carried by the miner (cyclone preseparator and pump) are the same. After the shift the TEOM cannister is plugged into an interface box which enables a minicomputer to automatically identify the unit, determine the dust mass increase during the shift, compute the shift average dust mass concentration, and print out and/or store the data. The second design is a real-time TEOM-PDEM system which is capable of operation over a 10-hour shift and on demand display real-time dust concentration level, time weighted average, and shift average concentration. As a result of the design study, a prototype end-of-shift analysis system was fabricated and delivered to the Bureau of Mines. A description of this system which consists of six TEOM cannisters, interface electronics and minicomputer is given. The system represents a significant advance in the dust monitoring program in terms or accuracy and automation.

The U-Th-REE mineralization at Fraser Lakes Zone B is hosted by granitic pegmatites and leucogranites, which lie along the deformed contact between Paleoproterozoic metasedimentary gneiss of the Wollaston Group and Archean orthogneiss, approximately 25 km from the southeastern edge of the Athabasca Basin. The pegmatites/leucogranites are subcordant to concordant with the regional foliation and are concentrated within a northeast-plunging antiformal fold nose, the study area, which lies west of Fraser Lakes. The mineralized pegmatites/leucogranites in the western part of the study area (Group A) are typically enriched in U (± Th) with Th/U ~1, and contain uraninite, thorite, zircon, and allanite. Those intruding the central part of the study area (Group B) are generally enriched in Th and LREE, with Th/U >2, and contain monazite, thorite (commonly U-enriched), and zircon. The pegmatites and leucogranites in Group A tend to be slightly enriched in SiO2 and depleted in TiO2 relative to those in Group B and are interpreted to represent more evolved crustal melts. Both groups are peraluminous and show varied chemistry. Partial melting (~850ºC and 9 kbar) of a metasedimentary rock-dominated source, entrainment of accessory minerals as xenocrysts, and assimilation-fractional crystallization processes combined to enrich the granitic pegmatites/leucogranites in U, Th, and REE elements. Transfer of melt from the source region to the crystallization sites was assisted by deformation within and along major structural zones, such as the folded Archean-Paleoproterozoic discontinuity. The character of mineralization and structural control in the study area is reminiscent of the alaskite-hosted deposits at Rössing, Namibia.

IN conjunction with a geological investigation of the silver-bearing veins at Contact Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada, a survey was made with a Geiger-Müller counter of the gamma-ray emissions from the rocks in the vicinity of the mine workings. Discontinuous pitchblende veins have been encountered occasionally in the silver-bearing fissures, and the geophysical survey was undertaken with the hope that abnormally high gamma-ray intensities, if detected, might lead to larger and more continuous pitchblende discoveries. Before the instrument was used at Contact Lake, preliminary tests were made, first with laboratory specimens at Princeton University, and later over known pitchblende deposits at the Eldorado property, LaBine Point, N.W.T. The Geiger-Müller counter, as adapted for field use, is described; the technique of transporting and operating the instrument is outlined; and the general precautions to be observed are discussed. The results obtained at Great Bear Lake show that the instrument is capable of detecting not only a pitchblende ore shoot in a shear zone, but also the mildly radioactive "host rock" at a considerable distance from the ore body. Hence, use of the Geiger-Müller counter is urged, not just for the detailed search for an ore body in a shear zone, but for the detection of possible radioactive "host rocks" in large-scale reconnaissance surveys of unexplored regions made by prospectors and members of federal geological survey parties.

The complexity of commercial mining software has gained rapidly over the past decade as hardware developments have surpassed software capabilities at a staggering rate. Software users, recognizing the limitations of off-the-shelf applications, have adapted embedded scripting languages. Custom programming has always had a vital role in mine computing innovations, yielding a dynamic research environment in industry and academia. Fields such as industrial minerals can benefit from customization of existing software, since the majority of mine planning software was designed for large metal mines. Different customization approaches utilizing embedded scripting languages are presented, with examples of sand and gravel applications in development. Following implementation by Surpac and development of the Surpac Command Language, Tcl has been widely applied. Mintec introduced Python, also extensible and portable amongst various operating systems, for use in their MineSight products. In early 2000, Gemcom introduced the use of Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications, widely used customization tools for a decade. Datamine implemented a flexible multi-language approach, with all program commands and processes available through the COM Server Interface. This extends customization from the existing macro language to scripting in HTML, JavaScript, or any language that supports COM.

A study was conducted to examine how pretreatment of carbon-bearing gold ores with chlorine enhances gold recovery by cyanidation. It is hypothesized that metal species (including iron and copper) dissolved during chlorination adsorb on the carbon surface hindering the adsorption of dissolved gold. To test the hypothesis, samples of several sulfide minerals were subjected to reaction with sparged chlorine gas to determine which, if any, dissolve faster than gold under these conditions. Then, a synthetic carbonaceous refractory gold ore containing pyrite, chalcocite, activated carbon, and gold was subjected to gas sparging. The results of these experiments showed that chalcocite and arsenopyrite dissolve so that metal (copper and iron) is put into solution slightly faster than gold under the same chlorination conditions. Also, it was observed from the experiments that gold adsorbs on activated carbon during chlorination, but is replaced by copper and iron as the chlorination process dissolves more of the chalcocite and pyrite. The study concluded by investigating ferric chloride addition prior to chlorination to hinder gold adsorption on activated carbon.

A comparison of the amount of minus-28-mesh product produced by a standard grinding test procedure is provided for 45 non-metallic materials. The percentage of product, the weight of product per unit of energy used and the weight of product per mill revolution are shown. The results exhibited excellent reproducibility and demonstrated an accurate comparison of grindability for non-metallic materials.

Because it is the basis of the economically important operation of hardening steel by quenching, the A3 transformation in iron has been the subject of numerous investigations. Although the contributions to this subject are interesting, no general review will be given here. Readers who care to follow the matter further are referred to the comprehensive summary by Cleaves and Thompson,l which covers the literature to about 1935. Their references to 53 papers on the subject suggest that further investigation is hardly justifiable. However, considerable interest has devel oped recently concerning the reversibility of the transformation. From thermo-dynamic considerations, the transition ought to occur at the same point on heating or cooling, if the change of temperature is sufficiently slow. Yet all of the earlier investigators found a difference of several degrees. Burgess and Crowe,2 who used thermal methods, obtained average temperatures of 912" for Ac3 and 900°C. for Ar3 on electrolytic iron. Their data indicate a considerable range of temperature over which the change occurs, both on heating and on cooling. Terry3 measured the susceptibility in the critical range and estimated from the steepest parts of his curves that Ac3 came at 9I8° and Ar3 at 903°C. Ishiwara4 was one of the first investigators to report a shorter interval between the temperature of the change in the two directions. He measured the change of susceptibility of kaolin-coated samples of steel, in a hydrogen atmosphere, at rater of heating and cooling so low that about 3 or 4 hr. were required for the transformation to complete itself. His results show some variability between samples, but indicate that the difference between Ac3 and Ar3 is in the vicinity of 6°C. Roberts and Davey5 measured the space lattice in pure iron in the vicinity of 900°C. and concluded that a change occurs reversibly between 907' 3" and 910" 3°C., probably between 907" and 910°C. Wells, Ackley, and Meh16 made dilatometric determinations of the Ac3 and Ar3 points in samples of hydrogen-treated carbonyl iron maintained under a vacuum. They used three rates of heating and cooling: 2°, ½°, and .?°C. per min. and found the spread between the two points decreased with low rates. At the slowest rate, the Ac3 transition occurred at 909° to 909. 5°C. and the Ar3 change at 907°C. in three of the samples believed to contain the lowest percentages of alien elements. They concluded that if the rate of temperature change and the content of alien eiements were low enough, the A3 transformation would be completely reversible at 909.50 + 1°C. The question of reversibility is an interesting one and when some iron with especially small percentages of alien elements became available the opportunity to conduct an investigation was welcomed. Part of Charleston?s charm and beauty can be attributed to its historic structures and churches that line nearly every sidewalk, roadways that were laid out based on the width of horse carriages, great weather, southern hospitality and coastal living. Now imagine the challenges of installing new, or re-placing aging infrastructure, in this setting. Every shovel full of dirt, every stick of pipe and every roadway sub-surface has its own historic story to tell. For engineering minded individuals, Charleston?s infrastructure has almost as fascinating a history as its more visible surface structures. Charleston was among one of the first American cities to construct separate sanitary and storm water drainage infrastructure. This concept has roots dating back to the city?s founding and is a credit to the foresight of its founding fathers who understood the basic health differences between sanitary and storm water.

Mercury is a toxic contaminant encountered in the extraction of gold from mercury-containing ores. It is found in the leach solution of CIP circuits and in the cathodes of the electrolyte cells used to electrodeposit the gold. The research conducted has examined the potential for selective removal of mercury from synthetic Au-Hg-CN electrolytes containing only gold, only mercury, and both gold and mercury. Cyclic voltammograms were obtained for mercury- coated copper electrodes with these cyanide electrolytes. Exchange current densities were determined from the voltammograms in the low overpotential region. Laboratory scale batch- electrolysis at constant current was also conducted for the electrolytes containing only mercury and both mercury and gold, at 20 and 50°C and from which the kinetic behavior associated with the process was analyzed. The surface of cathode before and after electrolysis was also characterized and a copper mercury intermetallic (CyHg,) was identified. Gold codeposited with mercury during the later stages of electrolysis. The results of this work corroborate that the mercury-amalgam copper electrode offers a viable electrochemical technique for the selective removal of mercury, however a high-surface-area cathode-cell would have to be utilized to provide for the desired selectivity.

INTRODUCTION The principal object of this paper is to present data on the development of the revolving convex round table as a concentrator for the through 0.07-mm. slimes from the ores of the Butte district, although same brief notes on the earliest recorded use of this type of concentrating table in the ore-dressing plants of the Lake Superior region and of the Butte district are also presented. The revolving convex round table belongs to the class of concentrating tables known as film-sizing tables, these tables using the relative transporting power of a film, or thin sheet of water, as it flows over a quiet inclined surface, to separate the minerals of a sorted product.

In this paper some failure phenomena observed in the crossing of brittle rock formations at the Lötschberg base tunnel are presented. A brittle failure criteria, recently developed by Canadian researchers, is applied through finite element calculations together with a semi-empirical failure criterion, to explain these behaviours. Good agreement is found between predicted and observed failures at the tunnel walls. This study also shows some of the limitations of this approach. Dans cet article sont présentés certains phénomènes de rupture observés durant la traversée de zones de roches fragiles lors de l’excavation du tunnel du Lötschberg. Un critère de rupture développé récemment par la recherche canadienne est utilisé à travers des calculs par éléments finis. En parallèle, les résultats sont comparés avec ceux d’un critère semi-empirique. Au niveau des parements, l’ampleur des ruptures observées est assez proche des résultats de calcul. Cette étude a également permis de mettre en avant certaines limites de l’approche choisie. In diesem Artikel werden verschiedene Brucharten dargestellt, die bei der Durchfahrung von sprödem Gestein im Rahmen des Ausbaus des Lötschberg-Basistunnels beobachtet wurden. Zur Erklärung des vorliegenden Verhaltens wurden die erst kürzlich in Kanada entwickelten Theorien zur Beschreibung von Sprödbrüchen herangezogen und bei der Berechnung mittels der Finite-Elemente-Methode und eines semi-empirischen Kriteriums angewendet. Die so vorhergesagten Versagenszonen an den Tunnelwänden stimmen mit den Beobachtungen gut überein. Die Studie hat auch dazu beigetragen, die bei der Anwendung des Lösungsansatzes angetroffenen Schwierigkeiten aufzuzeigen.

Expressions are derived for tke orientation factors appearing in the Grana to -Lucke theory of dislocation damping, for fcc crystals. The factors are given as functions of the elastic constants, the direction cosines of the specimen axis, atld the direction cosines of the particle displacemeizts, for darnping due to dislocation motion on each of the twelve possible slip systems as ixell as lor simultaneous dislocation rnotion on all twelve systems. RECENTLY Green' has outlined the general procedure for calculation of the modes of wave propagation in a single crystal possessing a given crystallo-graphic orientation. In addition he has suggested how the results of such calculations along with calculations of the resolved shear-stress factors for slip enable the orientation-dependent factors (orientation factors) appearing in the Granato-Lucke theory of dislocation damping to be calculated. However, reen' assumed that the maximum stress on dislocations was in the direction of the particle displacement of the elastic wave giving rise to the dislocation damping. The present cal'culations show that this is an oversimplified approach appropriate only to special cases of high crystallographic symmetry. The exact calculation of stress on the dislocations can only be obtained by resolving the nine components of stress associated with the elastic wave into the appropriate slip direction and then summing. In this paper the general expressions for orientation factors are derived for fcc crystals in terms of the elastic constants, the direction cosines of the particle displacements, and the direction cosines of the specimen axis, bearing in mind the point mentioned above. Equations are presented which give the orientation factors for damping due to dislocation motion on each of the twelve possible slip systems as well as for simultaneous dislocation motion on all twelve systems arising from elastic-wave propagation. These orientation factors are appropriate to attenuation measurements made by the pulse-echo technique, where the elastic wave is a traveling wave. They will be compared with those for the case of a standing wave as derived by Granato and Lucke which are appropriate to measurements of internal friction by the resonance technique. The expressions for the orientation factors are compared with the five values given by insruch,' based on unpublished work of Granato and Liicke, for positions of highest symmetry in the stereographic triangle. The various equations derived for modes of wave propagation and orientation factors have been evaluated for the case of aluminum crystals at 1-deg intervals throughout the stereographic triangle. These results will be presented in the form of contour diagrams in a subsequent paper3 and their relevance to ultrasonic measurements discussed. ORIENTATION FACTORS The coordinate system used for the calculations is shown in Fig. 1 and all specimen axes are taken to lie in the shaded standard triangle. This report describes a gage which, when used with my procedure for producing strain relief, will measure the resulting borehole deformation, From the borehole deformation the magnitude and direction of the principal stresses in a plane normal to the axis of the borehole can be calculated. The design considerations, mechanical construction, sensitivity, and stability of the gage are discussed. INTRODUCTION During the past two decades an increasing mount of consideration has been given to the problem of measuring and evaluating stress in rock around underground openings. Several investigators have made theoretical and model studies of the stress and (or) strain concentrations around simulated mine openings or in structural members, such as mine pillars or immediate roof. Other investigators have developed gages for directly or indirectly measuring stress or strain, and a number of reports present the results of measurements made with these gages. Because various methods and instruments have been developed, factors involved in this type of measurement will be briefly considered.

During, 1956 the water used in mining iron ore in the United States amounted to about 2 billion gallons and the water used in producing iron concentrates-amounted to about 166 billion gallons. By 1980 an increase of about 65 percent is anticipated in the amount of water used for mining and beneficiating iron ore. Except for boiler-feed makeup water the quality requirements for water, for mining and beneficiating iron ores are not stringent. Adequate supplies. of water for development should be available at reasonable cost with the possible exception of some in arid regions.

The problems of the domestic merchant fluorspar producers are more or less common with those of many other producers of metallic and non-metallic minerals. For more than ten years the American fluorspar producers have seen an ever lowering price in the market-place for the fluorspar product, while their labor and material costs-continue to mount steadily. This cost-price squeeze has forced out of business all but a few of the merchant producers, and only two captive producers continue to operate, and one of them has announced early curtailment. The prices of domestic fluorspar, of all grades, have declined because of the competition from cheaper foreign imports, principally from Mexico, Spain and Italy. Tariff protection on fluorspar, particularly on the highest or acid grade, has never been sufficient to cover the production cost differential between foreign and domestic fluorspars. Low ocean and barge freight rates have also contributed to the barring of the product of domestic mines from, the major consuming centers along the Gulf and East Coast. Because of the freight disadvantage, all but one or two fluorspar producers in the western states have had to suspend business. More than 80% of the domestic fluorspar is being produced in Illinois and Kentucky fluorspar districts which adjoin on both sides of the Ohio River.
