"AbstractThis paper discusses the methods of handling air in a large asbestos mill presently being completed at the Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Company in Asbestos, Quebec.The mill, being the largest single asbestos producer in the world and capable of handling over 14,000 tons of ore per day, requires vast quantities of air. A minimum of 2,500.000 c.f.m. is required or about 10 tons of air for each ton of ore milled.Short descriptions of the process and systems requiring this air are given, followed by details of the fans and filters which make up the heart of the mill.This 'draw through' system, located on the top or 12th floor, is an automatically .controlled volume-pressure system creating the required suction to draw .air throughout the mill building and its numerous air systems.The dry mechanical method of milling develops enormous quantities of airborne dust and fibre. A section of this paper is devoted to a description of the multiplicity of dust systems within a system to control, filter, and remove this dust.Finally, the paper describes the method of returning the filtered air to the• working floors or to the outside, with some notes on heat, humidity and dust counts.IntroductionGeneralTHE discussions in this paper deal only with operations where air movement is involved. This paper describes a new borehole loading test using a self-boring instrument appropriate for dense sandy soils and stiff clayey soils. The results of loading tests for the bearing strata of deep foundations according to this method are also presented. This method has been applied to the study on the settlement behavior of heavy foundations resting on dense sand, stiff clay or soft rock in Japan.

THE PROPERTY of the Lamaque Mining Company, Limited, ?is located in the Town of Bourlamaque, seventy miles east of Noranda, in Bourlamaque township, Abitrbi county, north western Quebec. Gold production commenced at Lamaque in April, 1935, with an initial mill capacity of 250 tons per day. The capacity was doubled in November of the same year, and in December, 1937, it further increased to 1,200 tons per day. During the war years the mill operated at a reduced tonnage, but in 1951 milling units were added along with complementary crushing and shop facilities to bring the capacity to 1,500 tons per day. Finally, in 1953, the capacity was raised to 2,000 tons per day, which rate is being maintained at the present time. The total production at Lamaque from April 2nd, 1935, to December 31st, 1956, has been 9,168,901 tons of ore from which 2,208,168 ounces of gold was recovered. The total value of this production , excluding E.G. M.À.*, was $77,869,653.

Coastal and marine aggregate (sand and gravel) mining on US continental shelves is a major activity that supplies industrial and commercial demands for these raw materials. Because Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts contain significant shoreline segments that are in a critical state of erosion, sand-gravel and mixed sediment (sands with a high percentage of silt-plus-clay) deposits are mined in efforts to mitigate land loss. Sandy shores, and to a limited extent gravel coasts, erode by shoreline retreat due to relative sea-level rise and sediment starvation in littoral drift patterns. Mostly gravel shores occur in high latitudes and shorelines often advance seaward due to isostatic rebound following the LGM (Last Glacial Maximum 18,000 YBP). Sandy and fine-grained shores occurring in middle and low latitudes of the conterminous United States are problem coasts that require beach renourishment and reconstruction of barrier islands. Muddy coasts of the Mississippi Delta region are especially problematic because some islands are literally disappearing in response to subsidence. Replacement of sediments lost to the littoral drift system or returned to sedimentary sinks by drowning is thus a critical endeavor that involves annually dredging hundreds of millions of cubic meters of sediments from the continental shelf area. The types of shelf sediments that are amenable to marine mining techniques, their occurrence, and means of detection are highlighted in this paper. Minable Sediments on the Continental Shelf Wide varieties of sedimentary bodies that occur on the continental shelf are amenable to mining for beach renourishment and barrier island (beach-dune-marsh system) reconstruction. Relict terrestrial deposits make up a small but important proportion of shelf sediments that were deposited on coastal plains, now drowned by the post-glacial sea-level rise to form continental shelves. Examples of these deposits include drowned moraines, outwash plains, eskers, and kettles along the northern Atlantic coast in addition to siliciclastics along middle latitude Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts. Special cases include carbonate sequences along tropical costs of Florida and the muddy coasts of deltas, mostly in Louisiana. Specific types of minable deposits thus include shoreface attached sand sheets, dunes, and ridges in addition to offshore inter-reefal sands (between coral reefs in the Florida Reef Tract), bank deposits, and sand waves (ridges) that extend into US territorial waters. Nearshore siliciclastics include ebb-tidal deltas and bars. Drowned river valleys occur along all three US coasts and can be exploited for their fluvial sands if the covering mud sheets are thin.

A method is presented for the linear evaluation of adsorption data using the equations dC = Ae-rv dv and v = [jT] - q, where dC is the phase composition increment, v a calculated parameter, T the absolute temperature, and A, r, h, g, and q the constants. The value of v is calculated from the composition C for both the adsorption surface and the immersion phase. A plot of v for each phase on Cartesian coordinates results in straight line graphs. With temperature variation, a plot of v versus,[ ] also results in straight line graphs. The equations are applicable to electronic and salt equilibria.

This paper investigates variations of lignite quality attributes with geostatistical methods. The study focuses on lignite from the Southern Field in the Greek province of West Macedonia. The targeted quality variable is the ash water-free content (AWF). A geostatistical model is constructed based on data from 480 drillholes (approximate drill hole spacing of 250m). For each drillhole, the vertical average of the AWF is calculated. The coarse-grained AWF is then modeled as the superposition of a trend surface and fluctuations. The spatial dependence of the fluctuations is modeled by means of the experimental variogram. Kriging estimators are used to determine the AWF values on a rectangular grid, and the uncertainty of the estimates is calculated. Implications of the analysis for the variability of the produced lignite are discussed, and recommendations for additional drilling are proposed.

"The Coeur d’Alene mining district in northern Idaho was first discovered more than 130 years ago and has been the most prolific silver producer in the United States. The Lucky Friday Mine of Hecla Mining Co. (Fig. 1) is the oldest (76 years) and deepest mine in the district, producing approximately 725 t/day (800 stpd) from narrow, vertical lead-zinc-silver veins. Cut-and-fill stoping is currently employed at depths to about 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the three deepest mines in the western hemisphere. The #4 Shaft, a winze collared at approximately 1.8 km (5,900 ft) below surface and extending to a depth of nearly 2.9 km (9,600 ft), was recently completed to exploit the high-grade 30 Vein, whose resource has been identified to at least 3 km (9,700 ft) in depth.As with other deep mines worldwide, a number of challenging engineering issues occur, including: high in situ rock stress, squeezing ground, seismicity, high in situ rock temperature that requires refrigeration, diesel equipment that generates diesel particulate matter (DPM) requiring high ventilation airflow rates and long travel times for worker transport to mining areas.This article describes the methods that Hecla Mining Co. has employed during the past 50 years to combat these issues, with emphasis on the current efforts to implement continuous, mechanical mining with automated or teleremote operation and to introduce electric and battery-powered equipment to minimize refrigeration and ventilation requirements for the removal of DPMs.Geology and in situ stressThe host rock mass is an extremely thick sedimentary sequence (the Belt Series) that has been tilted vertically by mountain building. The rock mass in the current section of the mine consists of weak, heavily foliated argillites and stronger, bedded silty-argillites termed siltite. The vertical veins (80° to 85° dip) are parallel to the foliation with an approximate width of around 3 m (10 ft). There are two regional, vertical faults that parallel the vein; one forming the hangingwall of the orebody and one approximately 90 m (300 ft) in the footwall. Additionally, there are several thin, rough northdipping faults that occur in the footwall of the vein which terminate on the major vertical faults.Both the argillite and vein package rock have moderate strength, with uniaxial compressive strength averaging about 100 MPa (14,700 psi with a range from about 70 to 125 MPa), and are moderately abrasive, with CERCHAR abrasivity index of 2 to 3. The major in situ stress is horizontal and oriented in a northwest direction with magnitude about 1.5 times the vertical stress. Consequently, the Lucky Friday stress magnitude at depth is analogous to significantly deeper South African gold operations."

Manufacturers and consumers of steel have come to realize during the past few years that cleanliness is of great importance in steels which must meet rigid specifications for various physical properties. Of equal importance is the consistent production of steel which is uniform in these properties. For maximum utility, steels should be uniform not only from heat to heat, but also from ingot to ingot and within each ingot. In the manufacture of killed steels such as the higher carbon forging grades, uniformity as indicated by the usual chemical analysis is easy to obtain, provided that a normal top discard is taken, as is always the case in steels poured with hot-top practice. No such uniformity, however, holds true for the nonmetallic matter, which consists for the most part of the products of deoxidation of the steel. For a large tonnage of steels which go into articles manufactured by deep-drawing processes, killed steel has never been successfully applied because with the present deoxidation practice, low-carbon killed steel is almost invariably extremely dirty. To obtain the desired qualities for deep drawing, the steel is rimmed, - that is to say, deoxidized with manganese and perhaps a small amount of aluminum, - the resultant product being of high purity in the skin of the ingot, but very badly segregated at the center of the ingot, particularly in the upper-central section. This segregation necessitates a very heavy top discard, and one of the major segregates is carbon which renders the steel too hard to draw properly. If clean, low-carbon killed steel could be made successfully, much better ingot yields would be obtained than by the present rimming steel practice. Furthermore, banded structures and outside and inside seams, which are undoubtedly due in a large measure to blowholes in the ingot, are defects which are very difficult to control in rimmed steel.

The primary steel industry of the Prairie Provinces consists essentially of three companies whose total annual melting capacity, as of January 1, 1963, was 333,000 net tons. These companies have steel rolling facilities. In addition, there are five other companies producing steel castings by melting scrap in electric furnaces which, with the plants having rolling facilities, gives a total annual furnace melting capacity of 380,000 tons. Since 1954, the annual production of steel ingots and castings has ranged from a low of 66,588 tons, in 1954, to a high of 211,138 tons in 1961. The present facilities on the Prairies for making steel ingots from scrap, and rolling them to produce light merchant mill products, appear to be sufficient for many years ahead. Steel scrap, as electric furnace feed to make steel ingots for the present line of products, will probably continue to be available at reasonable prices either on the Prairies or from the north-central United States. It is recognized, however, that residual elements in scrap may be-come of greater significance and necessitate more rigid control of scrap quality.

The junction luminescence of GaAsxP1-x diodes containing up to 47 pct Gap was studied. Diodes were prepared by diffusing zinc into n-type material which was eithw boat- or vapor-gvown. Observations concerning the energy and the line shape of the spontaneous emission are presented and discussed; in particular the influence of inhomogeneous phosphorus distribution is considered. The role of reabsorption of the junction radiation is pointed out. With increasing current, the peak emission shifts to higher enwgy. This is alm true in cases where slow line narrowing occurs simultaneously. The length dependence of the threshold current density for lasing at 77 °K was examined for lasers made from the same material. It was found that longer lasers have lower threshold curvent densities, Estimates of the characteristic laser losses are given. Data concwning the range of Gap concentration in which stimulated emission was observed are presented. FORWARD-BIASED p-n junctions in mixed alloys of GaAsxPl-, emit light whose wave length depenfs on the composition of the alloy ranging from 8400A (x = 1) to 5350A (x = 0) at 77°K. Laser action in vapor-grown material was first reported by Holonyak and evacqua,' and in boat-grown material by Ainslie, Pilkuhn, and Rupprecht.' In both cases this was observed for low Gap concentration where GaAs,Pl-, is still a "direct" semiconductor with the lowest conductance-band minimum at k = 0 and a subsidiary minimum in the [loo] direction. As the Gap concentration is increased, the subsidiary [loo] minimum in the conduction band is lowered and finally becomes the lowest minimum for Gap concentrations above 50 pt,3 making the alloy an ''indirect" semiconductor. It is of interest to determine up to which Gap concentration stimulated emission can be observed. EXPERIMENTAL Boat-grown material was prepared by N. Ainslie of IBM by horizontal Bridgman technique. The material was n type and silicon-doped up to a concentration of 10'' cm-'. Vapor-grown material was made by E. Hull of IBM or received from Merck & Co. Diodes were fabricated in a similar manner as in the case of GaAs by zinc diffusion. Details about the diffusion can be found in a later paper.4 All diodes were of Fabry-Perot structure with two parallel sides cleaved and the other two sides sawed. Their width ranged from 50 to 150 p and their length from 50 to 700 p. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Spectral Distributions. A typical display of the junction luminescence of a GaAsxPl-, diode is shown in Fig. 1. The liquid-nitrogen and room-temperature curves which were taken at a very low current (25 ma dc) show a relatively sharp high-energy emission which is band-edge radiation. They also show a broad low-energy emission which is due to transitions to deep impurity levels. This latter emission line may have different shapes and positions depending on the nature of the material. It can sometimes be quite near the band gap giving rise to "bumps" in the high-energy line. The results presented in this paper will be concerned only with the high-energy emission which becomes more intense relative to the low-energy emission when the current is increased and the temperature is lowered.

"Underground mines have always been an integral part of the limestone industry. However, beginning in the 1990s, the number of underground limestone mines has increased for many reasons including• Stripping ratios at surface quarries have become uneconomic.• Existing surface quarries have reached the mineral boundaries, and the remaining stone reserves are underground.• Surface access to the entirety of the limestone reserve is limited by development or infrastructure.• The once-rural setting of the surface quarry is now surrounded by subdivisions and development. An underground mine is less intrusive and takes the mining operation out of the public eye.• For larger markets, an underground mine enables year-round production without the sequence of overburden stripping in the winter to expose mineable stone for summer production. This is common at many surface quarries.Multiple-level operations are a natural extension of the decision to mine underground. Most limestone reserves, for example, the Tyrone-Oregon-Camp Nelson, Hermitage-CartersLebanon- Ridley, and Salem Limestones, are sufficiently thick to accommodate multiple levels. Multiple-level mines should be planned by considering each level separately and then integrating the individual levels into a larger mine plan. Failure to plan all the levels of a multiple-level mine in concert can result in ground control (back, pillar, floor, and inter-level sill pillar) problems attributable to stress transfer and interaction between the levels or the necessity to leave a thicker sill pillar between adjacent levels.Multiple-level mine planning begins with geology. Once the upper level back horizon is identified, the geology, rock strength, and physical properties in each level are used to• identify the optimal back horizon• quantify whether back support is required and, if so, the type, spacing, and length of the back support• determine the pillar centers• determine the total mining height, including floor shots"

Flash flotation is a process that is included in many new mineral processing plants as part of the grinding circuit. Some of the valuable minerals can often be liberated at coarse sizes and will remain in the recirculating loads of the mill until they are reground small enough to report to the cyclone overflow. In addition, minerals of high density report to the cyclone underflow despite being fine in size. This can lead to overgrinding and makes the recovery of valuable fines by flotation difficult. Flash flotation is used to remove the readily floated coarse particles as early as possible and can therefore prevent overgrinding. It thus has the added potential to improve materials handling of the concentrates in such processes as filtration. The merits of including flash flotation within an integrated comminution-conventional flotation circuit is not easy to determine experimentally. Simple batch flotation tests are unable to provide any measure of the possible or probable improvements that are likely to occur from this circuit configuration. As a consequence expensive pilot plant programs are resorted to, to provide the information that will justify the inclusion of flash flotation into a comminution-flotation circuit. Those who have been involved in such pilot plant programs will know of the difficulty in stabilising the circuit as well as selecting the appropriate operating parameters (eg amount of concentrate to be removed in both the flash flotation and conventional flotation circuits). The interactive nature of this circuit (grinding, classification and flotation) is the root cause of these difficulties. Computer simulation, based on information derived from laboratory batch test work or plant and laboratory data, offers an alternative means by which an initial assessment of the merits of a flash flotation circuit can be determined. It can also provide the basis and focus for pilot plant testwork. Recently MacKinnon, Yan and Dunne (2003) developed a model that allows the performance of a flash flotation to be obtained within a closed circuit grinding operation. This paper provides details of an extension of this model to incorporate the interaction of flash flotation on the downstream conventional flotation circuit and allows æwhat ifÆ scenarios to be explored. Details of the laboratory batch test work methodology and the pertinent data derived from these tests that are used in the models and simulation are provided.

Construction safety documents regulate significant safety actions and requirements by which construction workers or employees should abide in order to secure them from occupational hazard events. Therefore, facilitating faster identification of applicable safety requirements from the documents has become an important topic in the construction safety domain. To address the need in this regard, tools and techniques have been developed and research efforts have been made. One of the research efforts is to utilize ontology, a knowledge representation and reasoning approach, as the methodology to achieve the goal of identifying applicable safety requirements. In such ontology-based researches, the development and construction of the safety concept ontology is an essential task as the concepts and the relationships between the concepts both representing key safety knowledge need to be carefully identified. In this paper, the author focuses on the safety documents without predefined concept structure and aims to address the concept and relationship identification difficulties. Specifically, the author leverages the Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) methodology, a theory of data analysis that identifies conceptual structures among data sets, to mine and analyze the documents in order to discover safety concept structure and to further assist the development of the concept ontology for the construction safety documents. The author expects the application of FCA to construction safety domain can eventually benefit the ontology-based approaches for identification of applicable safety requirements.

A successful engineering structural design often depends upon a thorough understanding of the material properties of the structure. It is no exception when designing a supporting system for stable underground openings. For this reason, studies were made in the deep mines of the Coeur d'Alene mining district to obtain engineering properties of rocks and rock masses immediately surrounding underground openings. In this paper, data concerning laboratory tested physical properties of rocks and in-situ deformation behavior of rock masses from the Galena, Lucky Friday, and Silver Summit mines of the district are presented. Interpretations of the data so obtained and suggestions for the use of the results of the investigations as design criteria are also outlined.

AT Fresnillo a series of veins that has yielded very large quantities of silver and other metals has been developed over a length of 6500 ft. and to a depth of over 3000 ft. In the course of this work striking changes in the mineralogy and metal content of the principal veins have been disclosed and are well illustrated by assay data and ore reserve calculations. This paper describes those changes and suggests their bearing on theories of ore deposition. LOCATION The Fresnillo mines and the adjacent city of Fresnillo are in the central part of the state of Zacatecas, 35 miles northwest of the capitol city of Zacatecas, once a great silver-mining center whose total production is said to place it fourth in the world. Another famous old silver district, Sombrerete, lies northwest of Fresnillo. Fresnillo is connected by a 5-mile branch with Fresnillo station on the Mexican National Railways line from Juarez to Mexico City. Lying near the southwestern edge of the central plateau of Mexico, Fresnillo is surrounded by a semi-arid rolling plain from which rise widely scattered low hills. One of these is Proano hill, an inconspicuous elevation rising barely 300 ft. above the plain, but in and around Proa[n]o hill are the Fresnillo mines, and it is marked now by a great gash cut by gloryhole mining. HISTORY According to an account written in 1834 by Francisco García, then Governor of the state of Zacatecas, Fresnillo was discovered in 1554, and a presidio was established there in 1568 to protect travelers on the road between Zacatecas and Sombrerete. Little is known of the earliest mining at Fresnillo. which seemingly began soon after its discovery, but by piecing together various accounts, it appears that mines there were working in 1717 and were notable active in 1751 under an administrator named Murguía, who left detailed notes describing them. In 1757, however, the mines became inactive because of difficulties with creditors and no doubt also because of increasing water troubles, and they remained abandoned until 1830. In 1830 the mines at Fresnillo became the property of the State of Zacatecas because the interest of Governor García had been aroused by the long disregarded notes of Murguía. Under Garcia's energetic leadership the mines were reopened, and silver production began in 1832 in spite of serious difficulties, including abnormal rains and an epidemic of cholera. In 1833 English capital was sought to allow installation of steam-driven Cornish pumps at the two principal shafts and to build the great hacienda de benefacio (the present Proano hacienda). The company formed in 1835 (Cia. Zacatecano-Mexicana) operated successfully until 1872, when its career was brought to an end by the political and economic disturbances

"In bench blasting, the distribution of loaded explosives with respect to the burden rock has strong effects on digging especially at the toe area. Blast design often focuses on other results such as percent-cast or fragmentation, sometimes leaving a diggability problem at the toe of the blast that is not discovered until excavation. A method for assessing the influence of blast design on diggability has been developed. This method relates the kinetic energy and rock displacement experienced by the material in the muckpile to its diggability. Simulation of the blast along with the calculation of kinetic energy and diggability is done with the discrete element computer program DMC_BLAST(DMC: Distinct Motion Code)."

The effect on well behavior of partial permeability barriers, changes in producing rates and well spacings have been calculated through use of a radial, unsteady-state, two-phase-flow mathematical model. This model allows for variations in permeabilities and porosities with distance from the wellbore. The numerical methods necessary to solve the problem require use of a highspeed digital computer, in this case an IBM 704. In each instance, pressure and saturation gradients, gas-oil ratios and recoveries around a well producing by solution-gas drive have been calculated as a function of time and distance from the wellbore. Comparisons are made to show the effect of changes in producing rate and of varying permeability near the wellbore and out in the formation on the production and pressure history of the well. The effect of different well spacings on producing rate and ultimate recovery is considered. Although the mathematical description of the reservoir is simplified in comparison to an actual reservoir, the results do give some insight into the difficult problem of spacing and proration in a heterogeneous solution-gas-drive reservoir. Results show that for the cases considered spacing has little effect on ultimate recovery and that permeability barriers removed from the well decrease producing rate for a period of time but have only a small effect on ultimate production. INTRODUCTION The effect of spacing and producing rate on the production characteristics and ultimate recovery of a well producing by the solution-gas-drive mechanism have been topics of interest to the oil industry for many years and the subject of many hearings before state regulatory bodies. The problem is very complicated because of the difficulty of simulating in the laboratory a reservoir producing by the solution-gas-drive mechanism under anything like normal field conditions. This paper gives the initial results of a study aimed at determining the effect of these factors on production from reservoirs simulated by a mathematical model. Two-phase, unsteady-state equations are used to calculate pressures, saturations, and rates of oil and gas flow as a function of time and distance from the wellbore. The model is radial, and reservoir properties may be varied with distance from the wellbore. A decrease in permeability at a given distance results in a low-permeability ring concentric with the wellbore through which all the fluids from more distant portions of the reservoir must flow. The current mathematical model allows for variation of permeability, porosity and saturations as a function of distance from the well. Any desired drainage radius for the well may be selected. Drainage radii of 745 and 1,053 ft, which correspond to 40- and 80-acre spacing, were chosen for the calculations which follow. A large amount of the input data has been held constant. No investigation was made into the effect of changes in fluid properties and relative permeability characteristics on oil and gas production behavior. Fluid properties and relative permeabilities are essentially those of the White Mesa portion of the Greater Aneth area in southeastern Utah. A recently concluded hearing before the Utah Oil and Gas Conservation Commission to determine spacing for the field aroused interest in the possible effect of permeability constrictions located some distance from the well on production and recovery. This interest stimulated the present study. In this paper, no attempt has been made to simulate any field production characteristics exactly. Only the solution-gas-drive mechanism has been investigated, and production by liquid expansion has not been considered. This investigation is exploratory in nature but does give some insight into the problems of spacing and proration in a solution-gas-drive field having permeability variations. THE MATHEMATICAL MODEL The mathematical model is similar to that proposed by West, Garvin and Sheldon.' Approximately the same techniques have been used in arriving at a solution. The equations are nonlinear, partial differential equations which have been known for some time. The particular equations used for this study neglect the effects of capillary pressure and gravitational forces. The advent of modern digital computing equipment has made their solution practical. Lawrence's position as based on unproven and faulty assumptions made with regard to the pragmatic evidence presented in his paper. Moreover, his call for the inclusion of all mineral resources in discounted cash flow valuations is redundant, if not irrelevant, as there are procedures that already take all classes of mineralization into consideration for valuation purposes. In my experience as a valuator, I find that Canadian securities regulators are more than accommodating in allowing any valuations of mineral properties to be based on cash flow calculations. In other business areas, the same regulators usually reject discounted cash flow valuations of projects or businesses with no operating history. Instead, the regulators prefer valuations to be based on other transactions tested in the marketplace. Valuations based on actual market transactions are less subjective than discounted cash flow calculations and/or the capitalization of arbitrary, untested or undemonstrated earnings projections. In the mining and minerals sector, such projections may be made by persons not qualified to make such projections. In support of this statement, I direct readers to the article "Valuation of mineral properties which do not contain exploitable reserves" by Lionel C. Kilburn, which appeared in the August 1990 issue of the CIM Bulletin. To quote from the article: "Value of a mineral property depends basically upon metal prices, recoverable grades, mining and metallurgical practices, commodity supply and demand, and political-economic conditions, all of which vary with time. Five fields of expertise influence the value of a mineral property: •geological engineering, •commodity markets, •financial markets, •stock markets and •mineral property markets. The skills of geologists and engineers properly apply to the first field of expertise. Knowledge and consideration of the other four fields is important, but such advice is more properly sought from marketing experts, economists and stockbrokers." Securities regulators have created no hardship for valuators by excluding unsubstantiated resources in discounted cash flow valuations. In the field of engineering, best design practices apply. A margin of safety is built into the design criteria for any new equipment or structure that will exceed normally expected load levels and stresses, even though such considerations imply higher front end costs. In accounting, the comparable operating principle is conservatism. It explains why, for balancesheet presentation purposes, inventory is stated at cost or market, whichever is the lowest value. Similarly, when the engineering or geoscience-based valuator plays in the field of finance, the rules of accounting and applied economics apply. Regulators in their skepticism of income-based valuations are in tune with similar views already expressed in mining literature. To quote H. Van Tingley, in Mining Magazine, July 1996: "... the DCF method has inherent dangers when applied to undeveloped resources. Firstly, it presents an often-undeserved aura of accuracy. The sulfidisation, acidification, recycle and thickening (SART) process is currently being used at NewcrestÆs Telfer Gold Mine to recover cyanide and copper from the cyanidation tails of the pyrite concentrate carbon-in-leach (CIL) process. While the process has been effective at attaining high recoveries of cyanide and copper, the Telfer SART plant has experienced higher than expected sulfide additions to achieve these recoveries. This paper details the results of surveys on the Telfer SART plant, which show that residence time appears to be causing the high sulfide consumptions. The paper also details the results of laboratory scale experiments which confirm the observed residence time impact during the acidified stage of SART.CITATION:Simons, A and Breuer, P, 2013. IN thermodynamic studies of gas mixtures and liquid solutions, the respective problems have been greatly simplified by the use of two general limiting laws; Dalton's law of partial pressures and Raoult's law. It is generally recognized that these two laws have a common physical and chemical basis which may be stated as follows: The law may be expected to be strictly valid only for systems in which the different molecular species are so nearly the same in their physical and chemical properties that a molecule is unable to recognize whether its neighbor is one of its own kind or not. Positive and negative deviations from both laws are frequently encountered. The occurrence of negative deviations in both gases and liquids is ascribed to attractive forces which, in the more extreme cases, may be so large in magnitude and so highly specific in character as to lead to the formation of definite chemical compounds. Positive deviations in gases develop only at higher pressures where the intermolecular distances are so decreased that factors such as molecular size and shape, which ultimately become concerned with the repulsive forces, come into play. In liquid mixtures, positive deviations are generally considered as due to differences in the symmetrical (nonpolar) fields of force which surround the various molecular species and which are supposed to give rise to a tendency for each species to associate with its own kind and thus to "squeeze out" the other variety. Fundamentally this also involves the existence of repulsive forces between unlike molecules. If the fields of force are unsymmetrical (polar) a tendency towards compound formation results. Stated in more exact terms, strict adherence to the law means that the "activity" (or any adequate measure of this quantity) of a component in a mixture is a linear function of the molecular (or atomic)
