L. Cope Welcome. I am pleased to see so many people interested enough to stay until this last session of the last afternoon of the convention. Of the people on the panel here, everyone has done everything in placer mining, but we have tried to sectionalize it with each one of us taking a particular portion. Any one of us could probably answer any question. I am very pleased to see some well experienced people in the audience. To start the discussion, Joe, can you give us a brief comparison of pit and drill sampling? J. Wojcik They both have their place. If you expect your deposit is something that is going to have widespread fairly uniform grades, then the pits may be the way to go. If you are going to have something you have to trace for several miles down the river valley, you can't do it with pits and do a proper sampling job. C. McLain Joe, the end result of all of this is to go ahead and mine it if it is a deposit. Do you try to relate your drilling results to something in mining itself against the recovery, because the drilling in different types of ground will give you different kinds of recoveries, and mining in the end is what you are going to do? Do you try to relate this to your mining method?

There have been several high-profile accidents in the South African mining industry where fatigue was identified as either causal or contributory. The risk of fatigue is inherent in any work-time arrangement involving shift work and work that is physically or mentally demanding, repetitive, or requires high vigilance. The management of fatigue is not simply a matter of correct shift scheduling. Amore comprehensive approach is needed. In order to be successful, a fatigue management programme should address the unique needs of the operation in which it will be implemented and should be integrated into normal operations. Fatigue management is a shared responsibility between the organization and its employees, and all stakeholders should participate in order to provide the safest and healthiest working environment possible.

The effect of four different second-phase additions on the strength of composite alloys with a common matrix was investigated. The four compositions each consisted of 85 pct by volume of silver with additions of 15 pct of either tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, or nickel. These particular additives were chosen because of their low mutual solid solubilities with silver at room temperature, the alloys consisting essentially of a dispersion strengthened silver matrix in which the second phase is distributed randomly. Test specimens were prepared by a powder metallurgy procedure consisting of ball milling the mixed powders, compacting, and sintering at 920°C for 1 hr in hydrogen. The constituent powders were of CP quality and of particle size between 2 and 10 ?. The compacts were subsequently hot pressed at 1000 psi and 1400° in an Inconel die, coined at room temperature at 60,000 psi and finally annealed and outgassed in vacuum at 800°F. The microstructures of the alloys are shown in Fig. 1, and the microscopically observed porosity grade was A-2 or better as evaluated by ASTM Recommended Practice B 276-54. The properties of the sintered compacts are listed in Table I, and the load-deformation curves in bending are shown in Fig. 2. The samples, of rectangular cross section, were loaded at the center of 58 in. span, and the reported stress was calculated on the basis of linearly elastic behavior in order to allow the comparison of specimens of slightly different dimensions. It is apparent that the tungsten, molybdenum, and tungsten carbide alloys exhibit very similar deformation curves. The moduli of elasticity were determined from the slopes of the stress-deflection curves at small loads. The measured values agree quite well with those calculated by the strength of materials approximation proposed by Paul1 for the elastic constants of mixtures, the calculated values being 15.0, 15.0, 17.4, and 13.4 million psi, respectively, for the tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, and nickel combinations with silver. The strength of the Ag-Ni composition is appreciably lower than that of the other three alloys. The discrepancy between the two groups is accounted for by the following characteristics of deformation and failure which were observed microscopically during the tests: A) The deformation of the W, Mo, and WC alloys did not involve the second phase particles to any appreciable extent. Slip and fracture took place in the silver-rich matrix alone, although the fracture path generally skirted the particles by favoring the phase boundaries. The deformation proceeded according to the following sequence: 1) formation of small, discontinuous microcracks in areas of the matrix adjacent to a particle, 2) general slip in the matrix and extension of cracks, 3) failure of specimens by propagation of cracks through matrix. The near coincidence of the 3 load-deflection curves suggests that the nature of the second phase particles does not decisively influence the plastic behavior of composite alloys of this composition as long as the particles do not undergo any considerable deformation themselves. B) A markedly different behavior was exhibited by the Ag-Ni composition where the relatively low flow strength is associated with the low yield strength of the nickel grains. Slip in the nickel grains was first observed at a stress of approximately 10,000 psi, although failure, at a later stage, took place by the propagation of cracks through the matrix. The ductility of this aggregate, in which both components deform plastically, is appreciably greater than that of the elastic-plastic composites. In summary: 1) The measured values of the moduli of elasticity of the composite alloys under discussion are in good agreement with the "strength of materials" approximation proposed by Paul.' 2) The overall plastic behavior of these particle-strengthened alloys is unaffected by the nature of the second phase particles, if the latter remain elastic. SOME relationships between the flow characteristics of iron single crystals of 99.9 pct purity and the behavior of imperfections have been investigated. X-ray rocking-curve measurements and etch-pit counts were made as a function of plastic strain, and compared to the stress-strain curve obtained on a modified Polyani tensile machine. Crystals grown from rolled strips of vacuum-melted iron by the strain-anneal method1 had a high preference for a (110) longitudinal direction and a (211) face normal. The tensile specimens were prepared from 2 by i by 0.040 in. single crystals having a gage area of 3 by \ in. Rocking-curve measurements were carried out with a highly perfect germanium monochromating crystal in which the dazz spacing was matched to that of the dZl1 in the ir0n.l Well-collimated CuKal radiation was used throughout. These procedures practically eliminated errors due to geometrical and wavelength resolution. Inasmuch as the rocking-curve half breadth may vary markedly from point to point in the specimen being irradiated, the crystals were strained in place by mounting a hydraulic loading device on the double-crystal spectrometer. The rocking curves were taken after each increment of strain in the unloaded condition, since no observable difference was found in the rocking-curves between the loaded and unloaded states. The rocking-curve half breadths of the as-grown specimens were in the range 90 to 120 sec of arc when the beam irradiated an area of about -£ by -& in. on the specimen. DeMarco and weiss3 have shown that, for a well-colli- mated X-ray beam, irradiating about 10"! sq in. of the very same material, half breadths within 10 pct of the Darwin natural half breadth were observed. Since the rocking-curve specimens were stressed by the load-unload technique, the strain achieved at any given stress depended on the time of holding because of low-temperature creep. Fig. 1 shows the rocking-curve half breadth (also area/peak height) as a function of plastic strain for a relatively short holding time (2 to 5 min) at each stress level. For strains less than 0.1 pct the rocking-curve breadth is essentially constant; it is only for larger strains that there occurs a significant increase in this breadth. Where the holding times at each stress level were longer (by well over an order of magnitude) there occurs a significant increase in the rocking-curve breadth only after plastic strains of the order of 0.6 pct had been introduced into the specimen. This observation is related to the time dependence of creep phenomena and emphasizes the difficulty in comparing data obtained by two such different straining methods. Etch-pit results were obtained using a 2 pct nital etch on specimens strained in the range of 0 to 1 pct. Prior to etching, all specimens were annealed for 3 hr at 150°C, the carbon content being sufficient to decorate the dislocations for strains of at least 1 p~t.~ The data points were all taken from parts of the same single crystal which had been strained with short holding times at stress in increments of strain of the order of tenths of 1 pct. The (211) plane is particularly difficult to etch-pit in vacuum-melted iron and therefore it is felt that these values are as much as an order of magnitude low. Fig. 2 shows the etch-pit density as a function of plastic strain. The smooth curve passing through the data points is not meant to infer a quantitative correlation with the rocking-curve data. What is of interest, however, is the change in etch-pit density in the region of 0.2 pct plastic strain. The first three increments in strain (points 2,3, and 4) did not produce a measurable change in the etch-pit density while subsequent increments did produce a measurable change. Cortez Gold Mines is completing a Feasibility Study for a new open pit gold mine in north central NV. The production schedule calls for a peak in material movement. This schedule is based on current operational efficiencies and equipment parameters observed at the company’s existing open pit operation. To mitigate risks of over/under predicting production, simulation modeling was used to validate the loading and haulage requirements during the peak production period. The advantage of simulation is the ability to provide a realistic model of a mining operation based on scheduled, and unscheduled random events during the period under analysis.

Shay Gap was created for the sincrular purpose of housing, in comfort, the workforce that would be required to mine iron ore, from leases held by Goldsworthy Mining Limited, in hill country, approximately 170 kilometres east of Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. To combat the and environment, the Company ultimately decided to adopt a novel planning concept for the town, which had not been attempted before in Western Australia. The special problems encountered during planning, and the reservations that were expressed during construction and early settle ment, are now part of the dim past. During the three years of occupation now achieved, there has been accumulated a story of success in the provision of an acceptable alternative to modern suburbia. Not only may this be claimed, but it can also be argued that the Shay Gap concept has been a more successful solution to a real environmental problem in our arid Pilbara region than has been seen in other similar settlements.

For more than 10 years coke-oven technologists have been investigating the expanding properties of coal on a scale larger than that afforded by laboratory test tubes. Koppers 4/ was among the first to realize that coals can not be differentiated satisfactorily with respect to expansion in coke ovens by the simpler test-tube methods; in his first method 80 grains of fine coal were coked in a cylinder heated from the bottom, so that the zone of fusion (plastic layer) advanced from the bottom to the top. The scale of test was too small; it has been modified by other investigators, but without significant improvement in practical application of the results. Somewhat later Koppers and Jendne 5/ experimented with a small-scale coke even, one wall of which was movable, in which the layer-coking in a coke oven could be simulated closely. This oven was heated from both sides. Their results with this oven showed a peak in the time-pressure curves near the end of the coking, period when the two plastic layers, advancing from opposite walls, meet. They also found that although the smaller oven was heated from one side only and did not show the Pressure peak characteristic of two-sided heating, it still gave results entirely too high. Russell built an oven similar to the movable-wall oven of Koppers and Jenkner and compared results obtained in it on Beckley expanding coal with these obtained on the some coal in the Altieri 7/ small-scale apparatus. Both tests were conducted at the same constant pressure, but heating was from two sides in Russell's oven and from one side in the Altieri tester. Russell found that the two types of test gave comparable results under constant pressure conditions even though the heating procedures were quite different. He showed later, however, that a "borderline" coal 8/ that contracted in the Altieri tester at constant pressure developed a peak pressure of 4 pounds per square inch in the movable-wall oven heated from both sides at constant volume. He concluded from this that testing at constant volume gave results more accurately indicative of dangerous expansion tendencies than those at constant pressure. He also found that heating from both sides in this oven gave higher pressure than heating from one side only.

Hydrometallurgical processes, i.e., Cu extraction from a mineral concentrate and Zn electrowinning, are coupled in a battery-like system. A naturally-sourced CuFeS2 concentrate mixed with activated carbon is used as a positive slurry electrode separated by a membrane from the negative compartment. The Zn is deposited on the negative Al current collector from the circulating solution containing 100 g L–1 Zn2+ in 0.2 M H2SO4. In this battery-like system, both CuFeS2 oxidation and Zn deposition are possible during the charging cycle. The additional benefit of this setup is the energy storage if discharged by re-dissolving the Zn in the negative compartment. Cyclic charge/discharge testing revealed oxidation of the mineral concentrate supported by the Zn2+/Zn redox reaction. The coulombic and energy efficiencies increased monotonically to 95.6% and 43%, respectively, with approximately 7% Cu extraction during the first 10 charge/discharge cycles (completed in 2.4 hours). The discharge energy density also increased from 2.7 to 36.2 mWh L–1. In the following 90 cycles, the low energy (~14%) and coulombic (~33%) efficiencies that were obtained confirmed the progress of irreversible reactions e.g. Cu extraction from the mineral concentrate. Overall, approximately 16% Cu was extracted from the mineral concentrate over 100 charge/discharge cycles (or about 12.2 hours). INTRODUCTION Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the main economic copper-bearing mineral, which is generally processed through pyro-metallurgical methods to produce Cu. However, environmental challenges with smelting, depletion of high-grade ores and a large number of impurities (some toxic) have resulted in continued research aimed at the development of hydrometallurgical technologies to process CuFeS2. There are a number of different proposed hydrometallurgical routes in the literature to treat CuFeS2 concentrates, but only a few have attained commercial acceptance (Dreisinger, 2006). Zn is another commercially important metal that is mainly produced via acid leaching of roasted sphalerite (ZnS). The pregnant leach solution is rigorously purified to remove all the soluble metal impurities, particularly those that are electrochemically more noble than Zn and present large kinetic activity towards H2 evolution (Hu & Piron, 1992; Mackinnon, Brannen, & Fenn, 1987; Mureşan, Maurin, Oniciu, & Gaga, 1996). Metal impurities such as Cu, Co, Ni, Cd, Pb, Sb, As, Ge and Fe etc., if they exist in the leach liquor beyond the tolerance limits, can decrease the current efficiency during electrowinning and deteriorate the deposit quality (Alfantazi & Dreisinger, 2001). A complete flow sheet, describing the process steps of Zn metal production from mine site to pure metal is presented elsewhere (Brown, Meisenhelder, & Yao, 1983).

The attention of the world is being focused on the spectacular rise of elemental sulphur production in Alberta. In the short space of a decade, production has increased from less than 10,000 long tons, in 1952, to al-most 1,000,000 long tons in 1962. Moreover, 1963 sulphur production is expected to rise by 50 per cent to approximately 1,500,000 long tons, and further increases are forecast for ensuing years. The reason for this dramatic in-crease in elemental sulphur production, particularly in the last year or two, is that Alberta elemental sulphur is recovered in association with the production of sour natural gas. When very large volumes of natural gas began moving to U.S. markets in the latter part of 1961, the resultant increase in sour gas production led to a marked increase in the production of sulphur. Consequently, Canada, mainly on the strength of sulphur produced in Alberta, will soon become the second largest producer of sulphur in the Free World

The paramount importance of water to life of all forms on the earth is too well known to require elaboration in this brief paper. It has repeatedly been termed the most valuable of all our mineral resources. Its importance is justifiably recognized in the extensive areas covering the earth which receive sufficient rainfall to sustain a relatively luxuriant vegetation; but in those areas where rainfall is insufficient to support anything but a relatively meager plant growth, the location of a water supply and its development become of even more vital interest to those attempting to obtain a living from the soil. Geological investigations concerning the water supply of the United States have been most extensive, important work having been accomplished by Federal, State, and local governments and by private enterprise. A casual examination of the titles of the 739 Water-Supply Papers published by the United States Geological Survey3/ alone testifies 'to the vital nature of our water resources and the extensive work that has been done on them.

The motor gasoline which is being marketed in the United States this summer is apparently more volatile than the gasoline sold a year ago. In fact the average volatility of this summer's gasoline is almost the same as the average volatility of the gasoline marketed last winter. During the past seven years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the fourteenth in the series. The cities in which samples have been collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

The material balance equation used by reservoir engineers is arranged algebraically, resulting in an equation of a straight line. The straight line method of analysis imposes an additional necessary condition that a successful solution of the material balance equatiott should meet. In addition, this algebraic arrangement attaches a dynamic ineuning to the otherwise static material balance equation. The straight line method requires the plotting of one variable group vs mother variable group. The sequence of the plotted points as well as the general shape of the resulting plot is of utmost importance. Therefore, one cannot progrm the method entirely on a digital computer ar is usually done in the routine solution of the material balance equation. If this method is applied, then plotting and anaIysis are asential. Only the appropriate equations and the method of analysis and interpremtion with comments and discussion are presented in this paper. Illustrative field examples for the various cases treated are deferred to a subsequent writing. INTRODUCTION One of the fundamental principles utilized in engineering work is the law of conservation of matter. The application of this principle to hydrocarbon reservoirs for the purpose of quantitative deductions and prediction is termed "the material balance method of reservoir analysis". While the construction of the material balance equation (MBE) and the computations that go with its application are not difficult tasks, the criteria that a successful solution of the MBE should fulfill have always been a problem facing the reservoir engineer. True and complete criteria should embody necessary and dcient conditions. The criteria which the reservoir engineer uses possess a few necessary but no sufficient conditions. Because of this, the answers obtained from the MBB are always open to question. However, the degree of their acceptability should increase with the increase in the number of the necessary conditions that they should satisfy. Generally, the necessary conditions commonly used are (1) an unspecified consistency of the results and (2) the agreement between the MBE results and those determined volumetrically. This second criterion is usually overemphasized. Actually, the volumetrically determined results are based on geological and petrophysical data of unknown accuracy. In addition, the oil-in-place obtained by the MBE is that oil which contributes to the pressure-production history,' while the volumetrically calculated oil-in-place refers to the total oil, part of which may not contribute to said history. Because of this difference, the disagreement between the two answers might be of paramount importance, and the concordance between them should not be overemphasized as the measure of correctness of either one. In this paper, a third necessary condition of mathematical as well as physical significance is discussed. It is not subject to any geological or petrophysical interpretation, and as such, it is probably the most important necessary condition. It consists essentially of rearranging the MBE to result in an equation of a straight line. This straight line method of the MBE solution has invalidated a few long time accepted concepts. For instance, it has always been advocated that if a water drive exists, but one neglects to take it into account in the MBE, the calculated oil-in-place should increase with time. The straight line method shows that in some cases, depending on the size of the neglected aquifer, the calculated oil-in-place might decrease with time. The straight line method requires the plotting of a variable group vs another variable group, with the variable group selection depending on the mechanism of production under which the reservoir is producing. The most important aspect of this method of solution is that it attaches a significance to the sequence of the plotted points, the direction in which they plot, and to the shape of the resulting plot. Thus, a dynamic meaning has been introduced into the picture in arriving at the final answer. Since the emphasis of this method is placed on the interpretation of the sequence of the points and the shape of the plot, one cannot completely automate the whole sequence to obtain "the best value" as normally done in the routine application of the MBE. If one uses the straight line method, then plotting and analysis are musts. The straight line method was first recognized by van Everdingen, et al,2 but for some reason it was never fully exploited. The advantages and the elegance of this method can be more appreciated after a few cases are carefully treated and worked out by it. Bauxite mine rehabilitation is an important stage of today’s bauxite mining activities. To get an overall picture on those activities the International Aluminum Institute (IAI) has been carrying out Bauxite Mine Rehabilitation Surveys since 1991. The most recent survey from 2003 covers 70% of the world’s bauxite production and 23 corresponding companies from 12 countries. The survey activities show that nearly all operations refer to a sophisticated environmental management strategy. By setting up a review scheme based on the principles of the Global Reporting Initiative the compliance of this survey to aspects of Sustainable Development has been reviewed. The Clarification of a multitude of aspects based on the GRI guidelines helped to structure recommendations and relate them to the survey as such but also to the different stakeholders involved.

The existence of resins in some coal deposits in various parts of the world has been known for many years. These resins vary considerably in chemical structure and properties. The resin that is found in Utah coal, however, is rather unique, and has properties particularly attractive for the manufacture of printing ink mastics and adhesives. This resin is a rather dark, very high melting point, low molecular weight hydrocarbon resin. Its typical properties are shown in Table I. Its largest use by far, has been in the printing ink industry. The history of Utah coal resin is interesting, but unfortunately one of disappointment and failure.

Seismic tomographic imaging has been applied to determine the blast induced damage zones in bauxite pillars in underground mining. At the retreating stage, when pillar dimensions are reduced from 8 x 8 m to approximately 5 x 5 m, the' seismic tomographies reveal, through measurements of the P-wave velocities which is a measure of the degree of fracturation of the pillar rock mass, the presence of three zones within each pillar. In the external zone, where velocities recorded are below 750 m/s. extensive pillar damage occurs which is attributed to both the growth and coalescence of pre-existing cracks and even the creation of new cracks in the rock mass. This effect is in agreement with literature, when considering the peak particle velocity as a criterion for rock failure in tunnels. In the intermediate zone, where velocities range between 7S0-1000 m/s, damage to a much lesser extent occurs which is due mostly to growth of pre-existing cracks and widening of their apertures. The inner zone, where velocities exceed 1000 m/s, is considered to be unaffected by blasting. Simple remedial measures of low cost, which are based on blasting mechanics are proposed to minimise the blast induced damage zone and consequently the transition zone.

A resume of the history and state of the art of physical beneficiation of uranium ores is presented along with a detailed description of research on concentration of uranium ores by attrition grinding. The information on flotation, gravity concentration, electronic sorting, and selective grinding was gathered to complement the study of attrition grinding methods. Both dry and wet grinding procedures were investigated as potential methods of upgrading a variety of ore types, ranging in grade from 0.02 to 0.42 percent U308. A Mardun4 disintegrator that employs high-speed rotating paddles in a cylindrical shell lined with interrupter bars was used in most of the dry grinding studies. Attrition scrubbing devices, which impart a violent mixing or attritioning action to ore pulps, and cylindrical mills, employing rods or punchings as grinding media, were used in the wet grinding tests.

pressure difference of 280 psi measured initially on opposite sides of the major fault in the Hawkins Field led to pressure determinations in the Woodbine sand throughout the East Texas basin. Considering the large area, there is unusually good correlation between pressure losses and points of major withdrawals, these losses indicating that the basin pressure has been materially reduced by withdrawals, primarily from the East Texas Field and secondarily from the old fault-line fields of Limestone and Navarro counties, with the pressure loss varying inversely with the log of the distance from these two main areas of basin withdrawals to the measurement points. Apparently faults located throughout the basin serve as local blocks to continuous pressure gradients. INTRODUCTION The pressure anomalies found in the Hawkins Field, Wood County, Texas,' shortly after discovery have led to an area-wide investigation of the pressure distribution within the Woodbine sand of the East Texas basin. These pressures were obtained by drill-stem tests made for that sole purpose while drilling wildcat wells to deeper horizons. The Woodbine sand of Gulf Cretaceous Age is or has been productive of oil and gas in 42 different fields, with the 28 oil fields currently active having produced 118,000,000 bbl of oil during 1949. With one exception, producing energy for all Woodbine reservoirs has been from water drive provided predominantly by expansion of the tremendous volume of water contained in the Woodbine sand. INTRODUCTION The Magmont mine is a joint venture of Cominco American Inc. (operator) and Dresser Minerals, Inc. The mine-mill operation is located approximately 160 km (100 miles) southwest of St. Louis, MO, in what is commonly referred to as the "Viburnum Trend.” The Magmont mine is designed for a production rate of 3810.2 t/d (4200 stpd) on a 5-day week, three shifts per day basis. Initial production began in 1968. The mine is open stope, room-and-pillar, and essentially horizontal along the trend of the ore body. Briefly, the main geological structure can be described as a brecciated graben bounded by reverse faults. The ore body in cross section is shaped like a bell curve with some lateral extension at the lower part. Presently outlined ore is 609.6 to 762 m (2000 to 2500 ft) in width and 2133.6 m (7000 ft) in length. The ore varies in thickness from 4.87 m (16 ft) on the fringes to an average of 27 m (90 ft) in the high ore areas bounded by the reverse faults. Lead is the primary metal with zinc and copper secondary. MINE DESIGN The basic design of open stope, room-and-pillar mines has been described by several writers and need not be repeated here. (Anon., 1970; Bullock, 1973; Casteel, 1972; Christiansen et a]., 1970; and Lane, 1964) This discussion covers the mining sequence as applied to the particular problems at the Magmont mine, the use of equipment, and deployment of the work force. In the upper portion of the Magmont ore body is a layer locally called the False Davis shale. This layer lies below the true Davis shale, is normally interbedded with dolomite, is of varying thickness, and if mineralized, is included in the top pass of the mining sequence. In thick ore areas this layer will be 2.13 to 2.43 m (7 to 8 ft) in thickness and will occur in the upper portion of the pillars. Due to its incompetency the presence of this False Davis layer is of primary concern in mine planning and operation. Mining areas are divided into three basic groups by ore thickness. First are areas of ore up to 6.09 m (20 ft) in thickness. These areas are below the False Davis shale and are mined single pass with drill jumbo. Second are those areas up 13.71 to 15.24 m (45 to 50 ft) in height. The first 4.87-111 (16-ft) Pass is taken at the top of the ore and the back and pillars secured. Benching the lower portion(s) in 4.57 to 4.87-m (15 to 16-ft) passes is then done with either a drill jumbo drilling horizontally or a crawler drill drilling vertically. Normally these areas are below the Table 1. Productivities per Manshift False Davis shale. These areas may also be mined by back slashing, or overhand benching, where the first 4.87-m (16-ft) pass is taken at the base of the ore and successive 4.87- m (16-ft) passes are taken upward. A minimum amount of back slashing is done at Magmont since it requires repetition of roof control on each pass and roof control is the single largest stoping cost at Magmont. Ore left to provide a working platform oxidizes and is coated by oil spills thus reducing metallurgical recoveries. The third mining area is over 15.24 m (50 ft) in height UP to a maximum of 40.23 m (132 ft) and will encompass the False Davis shale. These areas are mined by first driving +15% inclines to the top of the ore body. The top pass is mined and the back is bolted and roof mats installed as a matter of standard practice to minimize roof problems as mining progresses downward. Once the back and pillars on the top pass are secured, benching begins on successive passes with either the drill jumbo or crawler drill. Pillars on all successive passes below the top pass are secured as necessary. While benching progresses below the top pass, the pass at the base of the ore body is mined leaving a sill of 4.57 to 7.62 m (15 to 25 ft) in thickness to be removed with the crawler drill in a retreating manner. Rooms are mined on a 1.57 rad (90") grid pattern to insure alignment of pillars where multiple passes are taken. Pillars are designed on a 17.98-m (59-ft) spacing with rooms up to 10.66 m (35 ft) in width. Heading widths are wide enough for the mobile equipment to turn without additional allowance for curves. The result is a flexible layout which provides a maximum number of headings available for high extraction rates and grade control. PRODUCTION Incentive Bonus Incentive bonuses play an important part in the mine production at Magmont. Production crews are trained to perform only one of the mining functions of drilling, blasting, mucking. or roof bolting. This specialization, or functionalization, is augmented by development to open all possible stoping areas as early as possible in the life of the mine. This insures that each crew will have enough headings to perform its specialty. The incentive bonuses increase exponentially as output increases. The lucrative incentive bonus coupled with the specialization of the production crews and proper mine development have combined to give the high productivities shown in Table 1. Development crews perform all mining functions in their area. The incentive bonus is paid on a per foot basis, Crews on different shifts working the same heading share equally in the bonus proportional to their contract hours worked.
