Natural calcium carbonate, commonly known as limestone is an abundant resource pretty much worldwide. Calcium carbonate occurs naturally as the main constituent of chalk, limestone, and marble. One of the unique characteristics of this abundant mineral is its versatility. Major markets for calcium carbonate are: paper, plastics, caulks and sealants, carpet backing, paint, and food additives. This broad spectrum of consuming industries has warranted producers of this industrial mineral to be innovative and quality focused simply to meet the ever increasing demands for performance. This need for improving performance of calcium carbonate has led to the development of new sources of calcium carbonate, natural as well as synthetic.

The rate of dissolution of U02 was measured in acid solutions similar to those used for in situ leaching, with S04 of 10-1.82 to 10-4 M, Fe(III) of 10-2 to 10-4 M and pH's of 1.1 to 2.3. The dependence of dissolution rate on pH was small and inconsistent, probably reflecting the combined effects of a very weakly polar oxidizing complex, probably FeSO4+, and a nearly neutral U02 surface. Differences in the state of the U02 surface may explain this variability as well as contrasts between these results and results reported in other work. Changing either S04 or Fe(III) concentrations significantly affects dissolution rates. Increasing low sulfate concentrations in solutions containing 10 2 M Fe(III) at pH 2 results in formation of FeSO4+. In such solutions, rates increased with (S04)/(Fe(III)) up to 1:30, thereby indicating that the oxidation of U02 by FeSO4 is more rapid than by Fe3+. However, the dissolution rate decreased at higher (SO4)/ (Fe(III)), due either to sorption of SO42- on the UO2 surface or to formation of other less reactive sulfate complexes such as Fe(S04)2 or FeHSO4+ However, Fe(III) concentration is the dominant factor in determining solution rates. The rate was directly proportional to ferric iron concentration, indicating that the rate-determining step of the dissolution reaction is a single-electron oxidation by a ferric complex. Dissolution rates were lower in solutions of 0.1 and 1.0% H202 (0.029 and 0.29 M) than at similar concentrations of ferric iron because of formation of an insoluble surface coating of uranium peroxide, UO4?4H20. This phase may limit the value of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant in lixiviants, not only by its very low solubility, but perhaps also by filling pores and reducing permeability in the ore body.

This paper describing mining methods at, the Eighty-Five mine of the Calumet and Arizona Mining Co., Valedon, N. Mex., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. The Eighty-Five mine is in southwestern New Mexico, 3 miles southwest of Lordsburg, Hidalgo County (see fig. 1). The mine produces normally 7,000 to 8,000 tons per. month of silicious copper-gold-silver ore, and employs approximately 200 men underground and 40 on-the surface. Mining is done by shrinkage and cut-and-fill methods.

Inflammability and crossing point apparatuses were used to study the influence of increasing amounts of such inerts as ash, fly-ash, pyrite, limestone and Portland cement with several pulverized bituminous coals. The results indicate that it requires large proportions of inerts to substantially suppress the ease of ignition.

AMONG the feldspar-rocks there are certain types which occur constantly in different areas-viz., the aruphibolitic plagioclase- rocks and the granulitic rocks Composed of quartz and alkaline feldspars. Among the latter soda: granulites as well as potash are met with; also the corresponding gneisses occur. GROUP I.-THE ORES OF THE ARCHEAN CRYSTALLINE SCHISTS. The Rocks. The ore-bearing rocks of the ore-province of central Sweden are chemically and petrographically unlike the more monotonous gneiss- and granite-areas which surround them. On the whole, they constitute a quartz-feldspar formation in which purer quartzitic rocks, limestones, " skarn " rocks, and ore-bodies are very subordinate members. (Skarn is the Swedish name for rocks of varying composition, mostly consisting of lime, magnesia, iron, and alumina, silicates of the pyroxene, amphibole, and garnet groups; as secondary minerals, epidote, chlorite, biotite, and talc occur. The skarn is scarcely an independent rock but is connected with the ore-deposits. It is formed through an interchange between the silica of the quartz-feldspar rocks and the basic constituents of the ore-formation.) [A BRIDGED SUMMARY.-The amphibolites must be considered as stretched and dynamo-metamorphosed dioritic rocks. R. S. Shoemaker: Our first question is, is there a need for a grizzly before a primary crusher? What is its effect on crusher capacity and crusher maintenance? Is it worth the extra capital cost in a crusher installation? Vincent: ASARCO has a grizzly at Mission. Utah Copper uses grizzlies ahead of their gyratories. There is some quite abrasive ore at Mission, an argillite type of rock, which has a work index of 16.5 to 20, which is getting up toward the taconite classification. We get a life of 12- 16 million tons per set of concaves or per mantle with the grizzly ahead of the crusher. At Duval Corp., some 6 miles to the south of Mission, their crusher installation on a good, hard rock does not have a grizzly, and the last information I had is they get a life of about 2 ½ -3 million tons on their mantle and concave. At Silver Bell, our other copper unit in Arizona, they do not have a grizzly ahead of the gyratory and there they get a life of about 5-6 million tons. At Utah Copper, which we all know is a fairly soft ore, relatively speaking, they get a life of 24-27 million tons with grizzlies ahead of the crushers. I think a grizzly has a very definite effect on the life of the mantle and the concaves. As far as a jaw crusher is concerned, I think that usually it is desirable to have a grizzly if it is properly designed, which means it is self- cleaning. Otherwise I would not like to see one in the circuit.

As ore grades decline, ore deposits get harder and mineralogical complexity increases, metallurgical skills are more important than ever to ensure that today?s mining operations are operating efficiently and profitably. Yet specialist undergraduate degree programs have all but disappeared and metallurgical skills training for graduate engineers in the workspace if often haphazard. In response to this situation, specialists at the JK Centre in Queensland, Australia, have put together a professional development program designed to fast-track skills development for early career metallurgical professionals. The program, called ?MetSkill ® ?, is offered as a group training package for young metallurgists in the workplace. It is centred on a meaningful technical investigation negotiated between the JK Centre delivery team and the client company. As well as learning about project management and data collection and analysis, the participants study specialist topics such as comminution, flotation and mineralogy under the tutelage of senior research and consulting professionals. The technical investigation provides an opportunity for immediate practice of these new skills and JK Centre specialists are on hand to provide feedback and support throughout the program. The participants are employed across different operations in Australia and the Asia-Pacific, and although they occasionally come together for group training activities they are often separated by considerable distance. Specialist educational professionals from The University of Queensland have provided an innovative web platform to support collaboration and communication between all participants. This paper will describe the MetSkill ® program in detail, as well as providing a report on its initial roll-out to 2 groups of Australian graduate metallurgists in 2012

For more than 30 years shearer loaders have been the most important winning machines for,longwall mining. While the machines of the first generation had a driving power of only 100 or so kW, the present day shearer loaders may be powered by more than 1000 kW. Daily outputs of 24000 tonnes have now been reached, but this still does not set a limit. If the deposit conditions allow, further increases are possible. This requires the optimum coordination of all system components. For this paper the use of coal plows has been of little import as plows have found no favour, and nor are they likely to do so in today's economics in Australian coal mining.

AT the meeting of January 28 which was held too late to be reported in the February MINING AND METAL-LURGY, Messrs. Taylor, Barron, Bassett, DeGolyer, Hutchinson, Norris, Rand, Reynders, Smith, Sweetser and Callow were present. Aside from routine matters, relating to finances and membership,, the Board author-ized establishment of a payroll account and payment by check. It also approved plans for a regional meeting to be, held at Cleveland on April 19 and 20 under the auspices of the Ohio Section and the Iron and Steel Committee. Following a report from the Committee on increase of Membership, Messrs. Barron, Bassett, and Sweetser were appointed as a special committee to con-sider the feasibility of increasing the dues. Mr. Read was made secretary of this Committee. A pleasant feature of the meeting was the presence of past-presi-dent Olcott and the presentation by him to the Institute of an elaborate scrap book, covering the excursion through Mexico made by the Institute in 1901. The meeting was preceded by a dinner at which Scott Turner spoke of the problems of the Bureau of Mines and the large volume of service work for the govern-ment it was now called on to perform. M. L. Requa discussed the need of more exact data covering our national reserve of minerals. E. N. Cooper gave a vivid picture of conditions in Mexico. W. H. Bassett told of the problems before the Institute of Metals, and Zay Jeffries told of the plans for that Division now being formulated. Max W. Ball reinforced what Mr. Requa had said relative to the importance and value of conservation studies as relates to minerals.

The second-order, nonlinear, partial- dillerential equation representing the transient radial flow of gas - condensate fluids in reservoirs has been integmted by using finite -dillerence equations and electronic computers. Effect was given to pressure -dependent permeability, viscosity, and compressibility and to distance-dependent permeability. The influence of a second-degree velocity term in the Darcy equation was investigated. Implicit methods were used and practical, convergent solutions were obtained with material balance to less than 6 x 10-4 for recovery of one- hall the reserve at constant flow rate. Integration results provide the productive period of a reservoir for a given constant rate and the fraction of the fluid initially in place that can be recovered in that period. The properties of a lean and a rich fluid are represented in a set of integrations designed to demonstrate the effect of different constant-recovery rates and significant variables emphasized one at a time. INTRODUCTION A method is needed for computing the availability or reserve of a gas in a formation, making use of all technical and engineering information that is pertinent. As a step in this direction, a program for computing transient linear flow1 was developed that utilizes principles of earlier finite-difference computing for a similar purpose2-4 and gives effect to significant pressure- and distance-dependent properties of reservoirs and their contents. The present paper pertains to transient, radial flow of gas-condensate fluids. In the partial-differential equation of flow, effect is given to the variables viscosity and compressibility,5 and also to permeability. Included in the study is the quadratic form of the Darcy equation of flow that has been the subject of field tests6 and that has been applied to a gas with constant properties in transient flow computing. 7 Inclusion in the differential equation of variable coefficients to represent properties greatly complicates the higher derivatives of the equation. Because it was impractical to make a required improvement in certain of the finite-difference derivatives by Taylor-series expansion, five-term derivatives were used in the implicit computing. Related methods were developed that can improve general facility in manipulating finite-difference equations. The challenge of mining coal seams having a pitch of 30 degrees is one not frequently found in the United States, due primarily to the scarcity of such deposits. However, in the Thompson Creek District in Pitkin, Colorado, such a challenge exists to produce high quality medium volatile coking coal, and development of a longwall system is underway. The deposits under consideration are those of the Anschutz Corporation Inc. of Denver, Colorado, which are not in a virgin state. The properties were originally mined by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation from 1894-1907, and by the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. from 1953-1966. Approximately five and one half million tons of coal have been mined by the above companies, attesting to its quality. The cessation of operations in both instances was occasioned by economics. Both companies employed a room and pillar system of mining, but being denied the use of high capacity mining and loading machinery because of the excessive pitch of the coal seam. This resulted in an unfavorable productivity expressed as output per man-shift, and thus the high cost of production occasioned by hand loading and semi-mechanization dictated cessation of operations. The ninth annual Mine Rescue Evaluation was held in conjunction with the RMCMI 2000 convention at the Sheraton Tamarron Resort, Durango, Colorado June 25 thru 27. The purpose of the mine rescue evaluation program is to provide an opportunity for mine rescue teams to learn new skills and improve their existing ones in a non-competitive environment. Several staged "disaster" scenarios were [ ] held where the teams are called upon to exhibit their life saving abilities. The evaluators meanwhile are offering suggestions, both verbal and written, to help the teams better understand the situations presented them. This non-competitive environment allows the teams to work together and share their knowledge with fellow mine rescue teams providing everyone with a positive learning experience. Mine Rescue Chairman Bill Balaz was in charge of coordinating the events. Seven teams consisting of seven to ten members each (totaling 63 members) participated in the two-day event. Each team was required to respond to three different real-life scenarios plus a written general knowledge test daily. This year's four professional evaluators included Art Saenz (Hazardous Materials) of Western Envi¬ronmental Associates; Guy Horton (Ropes), Guy Horton Rope Rescue; Mary Bailey (Medical), MBA Training and Ron Lauer (Confined Space) also lassos Western Environmental Associates. They cash prov- [ ] ided three different challenging mock situations per day per team. The teams had no prior knowledge of what the scenarios would be as details were provided only as they arrived. Ten volunteer victims added much drama and excitement to the event. Their realistic enactments, complete with false blood makeup and severed limbs, made for some very tense scenarios. The Mine Rescue Teams participating this year were BHP LaPlata, BHP Navajo, BHP San Juan, all from Farmington, New Mexico; Bridger Coal Co., Rock Springs, Wyoming; Sabine Mining, Longview, Texas; Solvay Minerals, Green River, Wyoming and Western Energy Co., Colstrip, Montana. Many new [ ] friendships were made and much knowledge shared. A swap meet was held Saturday afternoon for the teams to exchange miscellaneous equipment, hats, shirts, etc. The teams were asked to evaluate the program and the evaluators. Then responded with many positive suggestions that will help improve the upcoming events in the years to come. Culmination of the Mine Rescue program was a Tuesday morning awards breakfast where the teams were presented with plaques. The participating victims and evaluators were also commended for their outstanding efforts. Sponsors for the Mine Rescue program were Big Sky Coal Company, CMC Rescue, Magnum Metals, Inc., and Rocky Mountain Electric. Many hours of volunteer time and effort from various family members of participants helped make the 2000 event a huge success.

The secondary copper producer, Montanwerke Brixlegg AG (Austria), produces 73 000 tonnes of cathodic copper per year using ISA tankhouse technology. METTOP GmbH (Austria) evaluated the different anode qualities from the plant with relation to the current efficiency and specific energy consumption. Parameters including the chemical and physical anode quality, current and current density distribution at each cathode, voltage, and distance between each cathode and anode were examined. In addition, the temperature, chemical analysis, and conductivity of the electrolyte was determined for each investigated cell, as well as the anode weight, anode scrap, cathode sheet, and short circuits. Metallographic analysis was also performed on selected dendrites. The investigations resulted in specific improvements in the tankhouse process including the level of anode impurities, and future projects are planned for further tankhouse optimization.

Introduction The pages that follow present a brief chronological survey of views which have been held, and of legislation enacted, for the regulation of the natural gas and oil industry in the Turner Valley field, especially as regards conservation of the natural gas. To provide a necessary background for an adequate understanding of the progress of events in western Canada, there is included also a compilation, from technical and legal authorities, of some of the more important measures which have been adopted for the regulation of the oil and gas fields of the United States, where these measures have had, or are likely to have, a bearing on the course of our domestic industry. Owing to exigencies of space, it has been possible to refer only to the most outstanding proposals and legislation, and to these in the briefest possible form. Although, so far as Canada is concerned, the data presented are restricted almost entirely to the Turner Valley field, it is the hope of the writer that the paper may prove of value for purposes of reference: for any similar gas and oil fields discovered in western Canada will certainly revive and intensify the problem of the proper steps to be taken for the conservation of the gas. Definition of 'Conservation The term conservation has been so misunderstood and misrepresented that, to many persons in Alberta, it means little more than closing-in wells. In the light of the definition of Charles E. Hughes, that 'True conservation of a raw material is its economical use', the subject of natural gas conservation is inseparably involved with the study of the function of the -gas and with the development of the principles of unit operation.

The relationships between mineral deposits and various plate margin mechanisms are examined under the constraints of radiogenic isotopes and other geochemical indicators. It seems like1 y that: (1) deposits of the spreading ridge association are fairly ubiquitious through most of geologic history and can be recognized by the lithologic assemblage and primitive lead isotope ratios; (2) most metals in the island arc association are not derived entirely from a subducting oceanic plate, and have a partly continental affinity; (3) subduction beneath a continental plate generates ores which are derived either from the downgoing plate or from the lower crust; (4) the heating of a continental plate by thickening or by mantle plumes may develop a metallogenic province involving extraction of metals from the curst; (5) rifts and grabens developing thick sections of marine sediments with evaporites may be the locus of base metal mineralization by movement of reducing brine solutions resulting from diagenesis and bacterial reduction of sulfates

This paper deals with the methods of mining the high-grade clays of California. The fact that the majority of the clay pits in the state are operated on a scale that is small by comparison with most metal mines causes a diversity of methods and gives rise to problems of selection of the method best suited to given conditions. Two or three operators in California produce approximately 500 tons per day of a single kind of clay from a single pit. About five varieties of clay are mined on a scale of 200 to 400 tons per day; not over 15 varieties are mined on a scale of 50 to 200 tons per day; and more than 50 varieties are mined at the rate of less than 50 tons per day. It is the aim of this paper to delimit, as far as the data at hand permit, the conditions and scale of operations that favor the selection of each dominant method of mining that is actually being applied at California properties. Details of the occurrence and utilization of the clays of California have been given in a recent bulletin1 and will not be considered here. Geographical and Geological Features of California Clay Deposits The greater part of the high-grade clays consumed by clay-working plants in California is mined from one of three producing areas in the state: (1) Lincoln, Placer County, on the eastern edge of the Sacramento valley, 30 miles northeast of Sacramento; (2) Ione, Amador County, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, 38 miles northeast of Stockton, and 12 miles west of Jackson, one of the important towns of the famous Mother Lode gold-mining district; and (3) Alberhill, Riverside County, 90 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Other districts of minor importance are near Cardiff and Carlsbad, San Diego County, and El Toro and San Juan Capistrano, Orange County. In addition, there are a number of isolated properties in various parts of the state.

As part of an over-all laboratory and plant test program to determine mixing ad other techniques for a more economic use of bentonite as an iron ore pellet binder, a settling test for measuring the bentonite content within a pellet or a batch of pellets has been developed. Through this test, it has been shown that dry fracture load is directly proportional to bentonite content in batches of pellets, but inversely propor tional to bentonite content in individual pellets of the same batch. This apparent paradox is explained by a negative correlation between a pellet's size and its bentonite content and the fact that large pellets can withstand a higher fracture load than small pellets. In past attempts to characterize green and dry iron ore pellets, the authors found large variations in the results of strength tests on closely sized pellets from the same batch.' Reasons advanced for such variations in the quality of pellets in which the binder is bentonite were the presence of internal flaws and the nonuniform distribution of the binder. Even when resulting pellet strength is good, there is still the question of whether the same strength could have been attained through a more effective use of a smaller amount of bentonite. The authors' own and other studies 2-3 have pointed out the strong dependence of pellet strength on the degree of "mixedness" of the iron ore concentrate and the bentonite binder. During copper electrowinning in sulphate electrolyte, intense oxygen evolution takes place at the anode. Lead alloy anodes are progressively replaced by dimensionally stable anodes in order to avoid the cathode contamination by dissolved lead. The electroactive coating of these anodes has to be as cheap as possible, adherent to the substrate, electrochemically stable and has to be efficient at high current density and high temperature. This requirement is even demanding in case of copper electrodeposition for the production of thin copper foils for the electronic industry. The production of thin (20 µm thick) copper foils for the printed circuit boards requires high purity copper electrodeposited at a current density as high as 7,000 A/m2. The choice of a long term coating composition is driven by economics. The purpose of this paper is mainly to review the anode compositions suitable for copper electrowinning and for copper electrodeposition at high current density. A short description of preliminary results obtained with a new anode coating on a titanium substrate is also presented.

For the last 150 years, subsidence damage to the surface has been an unavoidable phenomenon associated with underground coal mining. In particular, the mechanization of mining methods in multiple seam mining and the concentration of mining activities in densely populated European metropolitan areas (e.g., Ruhr, Upper Silesian industrial region) have led to mining having a very strong influence on the earth?s surface. In both these regions, surface subsidence of more than 20m has been reported up to now in comparison to the original state. Underground coal mining in these regions strongly impairs all kinds of surface use, such as urban and industrial development, infrastructure (roads, waterways, and railways) and pipelines?without restricting the functionality of those objects to a greater extent. Demanding and, in some cases, globally unique engineering solutions have been developed and implemented for this purpose. The previously mentioned mining and industrial regions are still very strongly characterized by the (increasingly declining) coal industry and will remain dependent to a large extent and for an indefinite period on artificial drainage measures because subsidence that has already occurred is irreversible. This paper will primarily discuss the prediction of subsidence that is caused by intensive multiple seam mining and its influence on surface objects (e.g., underground pipelines). However, an approach for predicting ground uplifts due to rising mine water as a consequence of mine closures will also be described.
