The ever increasing price of bulk commodities forces buyers and sellers in world markets to take a more careful look at methods for obtain¬ing accurate accounting of commodity trans¬actions in commerce and material utilization in processes. Depending upon the application of a sampling and weighing system or the use intended, inaccuracies can result in an eco¬nomic loss of income or a loss in quality of the process. It inevitably results in a loss of control of ones costs. The accuracy of samp¬ling and weighing systems is today extremely important, as they are recognized to be the key components of the overall management system designed to provide both quantitative and qualitative control. This paper will be confined to the weighing systems only and will deal with various as¬pects of system design, calibration and opera¬tions. Special emphasis will be placed on new developments and requirements in this field.

A statistical investigation of folding at Mount Isa disclosed similar patterns in both the shales and the "silica dolomite" zones. Analysis of these patterns yields 3 groups of folds fully developed north plunging folds, fully developed south plunging folds, and flexuresrepresenting stages of development of folds. Interpretation of results indicates that a regional force from a southerly direction was responsible for the folding.The general pattern of shearing is allied to that of folding, with the exception of bedding-plane shearing. Many shears resulted from continued application of force on folds which ruptured after overthrusting. Other shears resulted from rupture of the more incompetent shale members, without associated folding. The shear pattern is consistent with the theory of a regional force from a southerly direction.INTRODUCTIONThe notes on folding and shearing presented in this paper are part of a current study of the structural geology of Mount Isa.FOLDING 1Measurement of FoldsInvestigation of folding underground involved the measurement of plunge, strike and dip of the axial plane, and the order of magnitude of each fold, together with its location and the rock type. The total number of folds measured was 701, of which 411 occurred in shale areas and 290 within the "silica dolomite" zones. All folds measured are located on main levels, from 7 level to 13 level inclusive. The sections of the mine involved are the Black Star, Black Rock and Racecourse. Detailed investigation of folds on the upper levels (4, 5 and 6) has not yet been done, but observations there suggest...

Bored cast in situ piles are highly susceptible to construction defects like necking, discontinuity in concreting, poor compaction of concrete, improper end bearing condition due to inadequate cleaning of bore hole, exposure of reinforcement, segregation of concrete etc. There is a necessity to understand the behavior of piles so as to design effective foundation system. In this paper investigations of two field cases were discussed to bring out the effect of defective piles. In one case improper end bearing has been discussed for a concrete pile of length of 45m and diameter equal to 1.2 m and is reinforced with 32 no's of 28mm diameter steel bars and in another case necking of the pile has been discussed. Further model piles with preformed defects have been tested in laboratory to bring out the influence of defective piles.

P. T. Freeport Indonesia (PI) in conjunction with Crescent Technology Inc. has developed a method to predict the metallurgical performance of ores blends based on the behavior of their component ores. The question addressed in this paper is whether ores treated individually could be extrapolated to predict the behavior of a blend of ores. The work further investigates the use of modal analysis to establish individual mineral flotation kinetics in each of the ore zones. This information would lead to the prediction of grade-recovery curves of ores made up of those minerals. Nine samples of ore, representing various zones of FI's Grasberg ore deposit were tested metallurgically and examined microscopically. The same testwork was performed on blends depicting the 1994 mill quarterly feed. Flotation kinetics of the individual ores were then "mathematically" blended and compared to the results obtained from the quarterlies. The calculated kinetics of the actual blends of ore received by the mill were fed to the simulation program and compared to the actual mill performance.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a geologically favorable area in the Beluga River coalfield in south-central Alaska to determine if there were sufficient minable coal reserves for onsite utilization to meet the projected thermal power needs of the Anchorage area. A program of diamond core drilling and sampling delimited a shallow saucerlike structure estimated to contain indicated reserves of more than 20 million tons of subbitminous coal in a seam over 50 feet thick that could be mined by opencut methods. A large sample of fresh coal was taken across the full width of the seam for washability studies. This sample, with 4 volume-percent of clay partings eliminated, contained 24.4 percent moisture and 16.8 percent ash and had a calorific value of 7,162 Btu per pound. The studies indicated that mechanical cleaning would be of doubtful value.

THE problems relating to the construction and use o{ mining equipment are basically the same as those pertaining to equipment in other industries. It is true that much mining equipment is subjected to an unusually severe combination of shock, high stresses, abrasive wear, and corrosive ? conditions, but in other industries, also, equipment must operate under similar adverse conditions, so that their experiences may readily be applied to the problems of the mining industry. Steel and iron are for obvious reasons the most suitable materials for the construction of the greater part of the equipment used in the mining industry. For a large percentage of uses, the ordinary plain carbon-steels and ordinary or unalloyed cast-iron are, and probably will continue to be for a long rime, entirely satisfactory materials. There are, however, many. conditions which cannot be satisfactorily taken care of by these materials, and alloy steels and irons must be used where the greatest possible economy is desired. In general, alloy steels and irons are used where it is necessary or economically desirable to use materials possessing properties superior to plain carbon-steel or ordinary cast-irons, such as: (a) better strength (b) better wear resistance (c) better corrosion resistance (d) better resistance to high temperatures (e) better resistance to low temperatures or combinations of two or more of these advantages. There are also conditions where materials having other special properties are required, such as, for example, certain magnetic or electrical properties for electrical machinery; but in the great majority of cases, one or more of the five advantages listed are the most desired.

Acid mine drainage became a reality through the exposure of the first bituminous coal seam, either by man or by nature. At first the small amount of acid formed was quickly and efficiently neutralized by basic rock strata and by neutral or alkaline water. As soon as extensive mining operations overtaxed nature's own defensive measures, acid mine drainage became a problem of concern to government and the coal industry. It was the purpose of the studies conducted at Mellon Institute to accumulate knowledge, both applied and fundamental, relating to the formation and disposal of acid mine effluents. It was during this program that the microbiology of acid mine water was studied. Most bituminous coal mine effluents are highly acidic and contain, along with other ions, high concentrations of ferrous iron. The acid is sulfuric, and. the iron is present as the sulfate; both are the oxidation products of iron sulfides (FeS2) which are present in the form of pyrites, marcasites, or other sulfuritic minerals. Radio propagation measurements were conducted in a coal mine at UHF (200 to 1000 MHz) and VLF (1 to 50 kHz) to characterize the transmission loss of intra-mine paths. The basic experimental parameters included frequency, polarization, path orientation and distance. Further tests evaluated the performance of roof-bolt vs. loop antennas at VLF and parasitic reflectors at UHF. Measurement results are summarized in a series of transmission loss curves. Examples are presented to show the use of these curves in predicting the performance of radio communication systems in mines.

Construction workers may be exposed to hazardous dust containing crystalline silica during site preparation when drilling systems are used. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that drill dust could be decreased by using wet or dry dust reduction engineering controls, enclosed cabs, and implementing a dust control program.

Refractory linings in converters or anode furnaces used to over-oxidize the blister copper will suffer rapid deterioration, due to prolonged contact with copper oxide-rich slag. Nitrogen stirring with COP KIN porous plugs and use of SEMTECH OPC in converters and anode refining vessels can considerably reduce both refractory wear and processing times. In addition, careful control of the vessel atmosphere and the use of real-time optical process control minimize both slag volume and contact time with the vessel refractory.

In 1987, the Rock Springs, WY district office of the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) began to develop an automated system to store, maintain and manipulate more than 14,000 drill hole logs contained in the district's office files for various solid leasable minerals. The development of this system was based predominantly on a trial-and-error basis, with many procedural changes incorporated over time. The current Automated Drill Hole Database and Analysis System will continue to evolve with new software developments and increased personal expertise in this field. The mission of the BLM's Branch of Solid Minerals is mandated by a series of federal laws. The most important are The Mineral Leasing Act, the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, the Federal Coal Lease Amendments Act and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. Several regulations, promulgated from these laws, dictate that BLM must perform certain tasks and functions as part of its specific duties. The regulations that apply to the BLM Solid Minerals program are codified at 43 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 3400 for coal, and at 43 CFR 3500 for non-energy solid leasable minerals, such as sodium, phosphate and potash. Specific functions required of the Branch of Solid Minerals necessitates the use of geologic and drill hole data analyses. These functions can be divided into pre-lease and post-lease. Brigadier Ralph Shelton Griffin Stokes D.S.O., C.B.E., M.C., who died in England on 24th February, 1979, at the age of 96 years, was one of the most colourful personalities in South African mining history. After the South African War, in which he served as a trooper, he joined the Crown Reef Mine as an assistant assayer (1902), and was to serve the mines of the Corner House Group intermittently for the next 57 years until his retirement in 1959.

Previous studies have demonstrated the possibility of using aqua regia-extractable copper and zinc in plutonic rocks in exploration geochemistry. The present investigation compares this method of extraction with hydrofluoric-perchloric acid attack and bisulfate fusion in terms of precision and discrimination between high and low concentrations. Statistical treatment of data shows that the overall performance of the aqua regia method compares very favorably with other methods of attack.

THE aluminum oxide known as corundum has several varieties that have been used as gem materials since ancient times. These include the red variety called ruby, the blue variety sapphire, and the asteriated types of ruby and sapphire. Asteriated sapphire was known to the ancients under the name of astrios, and descriptions of this gem were given by Pliny and other early writers. The relation of these gem materials to each other as varieties of a single species, corundum, was first clearly established by Haüy in 1805 and J. M. Güthe1 in 1809. Natural gem corundum is obtained principally in Ceylon, Siam, Burma, India, and Australia. Star sapphires and rubies always have been highly prized and in recent years have become particularly popular in the United States. Natural star rubies of large size and fine quality are extremely rare and rank with large and fine emeralds and diamonds as the most valuable of gem stones. Interest thus attaches to the recent success in commercially synthesizing star sapphires and rubies of a size and perfection unmatched by nature.

The one free surface blasting of a concrete block was simulated by Discontinuous Deformation Analysis(DDA) method. Comparing the simulated results with the concrete block blasting experiment, the crack growth and the free surface displacement which were simulated by DDA were observed with a high speed camera.

"THE H. B. Mine is situated on the north side of Sheep Creek valley, about six miles southeast of Salmo, B.C. It is the most northerly producer along a belt containing a number of zinc-lead deposits, including the Jersey mine of Canadian Exploration Limited, 3 miles to the south, and the Reeves MacDonald mine, 12 miles to the southwest. The important zinc-lead producing area around Metaline Falls, Washington, lies 23 miles to the south. Two prospectors, Horton and Benson, located and staked the oxidized outcrops in 1.907. The property was named the H.B. after the two discoverers. Exploration by a number of operators failed to locate any sulphide orebodies until 1946, when Cominco began a geological study followed by surface drilling which was successful in locating extensive sulphide mineralization. A program of underground exploration revealed sufficient ore to war-rant mill construction. A 1 ,000-ton mill was completed by 1953, but due to low metal prices production was deferred until May, 1955. To September 1, 1959, 1,900,000 tons of zinc-lead ore have been milled; present milling rate is about 1,250 tons per day. Concentrates are trucked to the Trail Smelter, a distance of 35 miles."

THE test of the English cupellation furnace should be so supported that the cupeller can change readily the elevation of the test, and at the same time watch the litharge channel. It is also important to raise or lower either side, independently of the other, in me of uneven wear of the side walls or of the breast. If the refined silver is poured from the test, it is much better to control the lowering of the test from the front than to raise the back by screws or a lever. In order to enable the cupeller to manipulate the test with one hand, when the litharge is running, and to pour the refined silver from the test without aid, I have altered the common support to the test, as shown in the accompanying drawing. The common method of supporting the test is by four screws, working in cross-bar nuts beneath the test. The points of the screws set, into the test plate upon which the test rests. These screws are usually worked by pounding or pulling upon the heads, which may be either small pulleys or straight bars, as shown on the back screws in the drawing. This paper is a continuation of a series made in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC), Inc. The first of this series of reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36, and succeeding reports described motor gasolines sold during the summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.
