The Sepon Copper Project is located in the Savannakhet Province of Laos PDR and is operated by Lane Xang Minerals Ltd (LXML). An Ausenco - Bateman Engineering joint venture, the Khanong Development Group (KDG) managed engineering, procurement and construction of the project. The plant was fully commissioned in March 2005, two weeks ahead of schedule. The plant is designed to produce 60 000 tpa of cathode copper. The process flow sheet includes a pressure oxidation (POX) circuit that leaches pyrite flotation concentrate to generate ferric ions and sulfuric acid for use in atmospheric leaching of a predominantly chalcocite ore. The process is unique in that the chemistry in the autoclave is forced to produce a basic ferric sulfate precipitate for downstream recovery of ferric iron. This paper describes the design, construction and commissioning of the pressure oxidation circuit. The challenges imposed on construction and commissioning due to the remote location of the site, landlocked status and underdeveloped infrastructure in Laos are highlighted.

The habit planes for hydride precipitation in large grains of alpha zirconium and Zircaloy-4 were determined in specimens containing 161 and 136 ppm hydrogen, respectively. In zirconium, the hydride platelets precipitated on various pyramidal planes inclined to the basal plane at angles ranging from 10 to 50 deg and 75 to 90 deg. Hydrides were most frequent at inclinations of about 20 deg and 90 deg. In Zircaloy-4, hydride plates were inclined to the basal plane at angles vanging from 5 to 25 deg with the predominant inclinatioiz equal to 12 deg; no platelets were found near the prism plane position. In both zircoinium and Zir-caloy-4, hydrides were principally, but not exclusively, parallel to (1011) type planes. When the Zircaloy-4 gmins were subjected to tension stresses of 12,100 psi and 19,400 psi during hydride precipitation, the hydride habit was unchanged except that precipitation favored those habit planes which were inore nearly perpendicular to the stress direction. The stress-orientatioiz effect increased with the magnitude of the stress. THE hydride habit plane in a zirconium has been determined by several investigators. Langeron and Lehr1 in 1956 found platelets parallel to (1010) slip planes. In 1962, Westlake and Fisher2 confirmed these findings and showed that hydride precipitation on twin planes, as reported by Kunz and Bibb,3 was probably due to incomplete removal of worked metal from specimen surfaces. Secondary habit planes, ( 1011) and (1015), were also found by Westlake and Fisher under particular charging conditions where a hydride layer may have existed at the hydrogenation temperature. Most recently, walters4 and westlake5 again observed the (1010) habit exclusively in zirconium. Louthan and hgermans have reported that hydrides precipitate on various ( 101l ) and (112l) planes positioned 31.5 to 90 deg to the basal plane in Zircaloy-2. The present investigation was concerned with the hydride habit in Zircaloy-4 in relation to that in zirconium and the possible change in habit when precipitation occurs under stress. The latter consideration was prompted by the stress-orientation phenomenon originally reported by Marshall and Louthan.7, 8 I) EXPERIMENTAL Materials and Specimens. Chemical analyses of all materials are given in Table I. The zirconium specimen was a 1 by 4 in. section cut from wrought crystal bar that was hot-rolled at 790°C to 0.300 in. and cold-rolled to a final thickness of 0.095 in. All surfaces were mechanically polished and then chemically polished with a solution of H2O, HNO3, and HF (10:10:l by volume) prior to annealing. Grains as long as 0.25 in. were grown by thermally cycling the specimen three times (in 10-5 mm Hg vacuum) between 825" and 1000°C at approximately 125°C per hr. Rolls-Royce Canada has been nominated as a Rolls-Royce Center of Excellence for repair of fan blades in 2003. One of the challenges of the Rolls-Royce Canada Component Repair Center of Excellence team is to reduce cost and time of inspection while ensuring trace ability and quality of the inspection performed on the fan blades. In the context of the dimensional control process optimization, and following the positive conclusions of initial trials carried out in 2003, the technical authorities at RRC have selected the SPG data 3D(TM) technology as a development base for dimensional control programs. The main goal of this development initiative is to develop and support an inspection system to perform the dimensional control and inspection of different components at the Montreal Fan Blade Repair Center of Excellence. The final objective of the program is to build a server platform capable to support different inspection sites within the Montreal facility for the future. This paper presents the certification process of the technology according to the VDI-VDE 2633 certification standards and some results of the fan blade inspection program of the BR 710, BR 715 and TAY according to the JES 195 engineering standards specification.

Disseminated Au-As-Hg mineralization is localized along the Getchell Fault system at the Getchell Mine in north-central Nevada. Replacement ore bodies occur in Cambrian carbonaceous limestone and limy shale beds. Cretaceous granodiorite, dacite porphyry, and andesite porphyry dikes parallel the fault zone and are spatially associated with the mineralization. Hydrothermal alteration and mineralization occur continuously along 4-5 km of the fault system, and extend more than 1 km down-dip. Alteration consists primarily of removal of carbonate and deposition of quartz, pyrite, and carbonaceous material. Marcasite, sericite, kaolinite, calcite, barite, and fluorite are common. Gold content reaches more than 43 ppm in parts of the altered zones and averaged 9.3 ppm in the mined ore bodies. For the mineralized zones as a whole arsenic averages 0.28%, and occurs primarily as realgar, orpiment, and arsenopyrite. Mercury (22 ppm) is finely disseminated and mercury-bearing minerals are seldom recognizeable. Accessory mineralization includes antimony (100 ppm), copper (47 ppm) , lead (18 ppm) , molybdenum (10 ppm) , tungsten (16 ppm) , and zinc (50 ppm) . Geologic field studies and K-Ar dating suggest that the mineralization is related to a hydrothermal system produced by the granodiorite and related dikes.

Collaboration between CSIRO Minerals and SunSalt Pty Ltd, a salt producing company located in rural Victoria, has resulted in a commercial process to recover magnesium sulfate (commonly called Epsom salt) from the saline waters of the Murray Basin. The feed for this process is bittern; the liquor remaining after halite (common salt) has been harvested from the saline water by evaporation.SunSalt produces salt and bitterns from three locations, namely Hattah (Victoria), Mourquong (NSW) and Wakool (NSW). The small size and considerable distances between these operations makes it uneconomic to build a stationary processing plant to extract value-added products, in particular Epsom salt, from the bitterns of the three operations. This fact led SunSalt to build a containerised mobile plant that could be moved to each site to process the bitterns at the end of the salt harvesting period.Epsom salt is extracted from the bittern by further evaporation, refrigeration and recrystallisation. In this process the bittern is diluted with five per cent volume of fresh water to minimise precipitation of residual halite in the bittern. Cooling the diluted bittern to between -5 and -10¦C precipitates up to 70 per cent of the magnesium sulfate, which is recovered as 85 to 96 per cent purity Epsom salt by filtration. This product is marketed as an industrial grade Epsom salt. Higher purity (up to 99.9 per cent) Epsom salt (USP or BP grade refined product) is made from the industrial grade product (raw Epsom salt) by recrystallisation.The containerised mobile plant was commissioned in December 2002. The raw Epsom salt generated in the mobile plant is refined to a higher purity Epsom salt in a separate plant located in Mildura. The Mildura plant was commissioned in December 2003.The CSIRO-SunSalt collaboration has demonstrated that the saline waters can be processed into a useful resource, and in addition could create jobs and a new skill base in regional Australia. The production of Epsom salt locally in Australia, which is worth currently about $A600 per tonne, removes the need to import over 3000 tpa from overseas with a net positive impact of $A2 million on the balance of trade.

Until 2000, pricing involved profit taking and cost covering combined with limited global published information. Market information was mostly subjective in nature and large resource companies benefited exclusively from aggregated company information and data. The market constituted producers and consumers only. The nineties saw massive cost cutting drives and re-engineering initiatives and this underwrote the structural changes evident in the late 1990s? economy. This supported South African producers on the international FOB cash cost curve, and ensured profitable coal mining operations. As the debate on relative scarcity of fossil fuels ensued, producers and buyers looked to the developing terminal coal market for direction. The much needed direction was provided when the API coal indices were developed and derivative trading was embraced to include financial institutions, trading houses and hedge funds. The liquidity of coal trades increased rapidly and vastly and market information became obtainable on a daily basis. Interpretation of current and future coal prices became available to all market players and contributed to the sophistication of the market that is now able to participate in risk management of prices, capital expenditure and brownfield developments.

There are more than 4,000 oil and gas structures present in the U. S. Gulf of Mexico. Approximately 100 structure removals occur each year and 66% of these are removed with explosives. From 1993-1995 an intensive study was conducted on the fish kill resulting from the explosive removal of 6 platforms off the Louisiana coast in water depths from 14-28 m (45-92 ft). After explosives were detonated, all floating fish and a sample of the dead fish which sank to the sea floor were collected.

The results of full scale plate load tests on stone columns on soft clay in coastal areas are presented in this paper. Four load tests were made, two of which were performed on the ground treated with stone columns, one on an isolated stone column and the last one on the untreated ground. For a given stress range, the settlement of the rigid plate, the stress concentration factor, and the excess pore water pressure were measured. It is found that the distribution of vertical stress beneath the rigid plate supported by the composite ground of stone columns is very different in shape from the one by the untreated ground, that the stress concentration factor has a relation with the stress level and time, that the stone columns increase the bearing capacity up to by 2 times, and that the ground stabilized by stone columns is of great advantage to keep the foundation stable.

In the mining industry the relationship between the government inspector on the one hand and the mine management and employees on the other, must be one of full co-operation before the system can be effective. The surge in gold and silver prices during the 1970's attracted many new mining operators and has rekindled interest among experienced ones. With its low capital investment requirements and fast payout, leaching has attracted many operators--particularly those with small or low- grade deposits. Although in certain situations leaching offers many advantages over conventional mining methods, many operators are uncertain how these relatively new techniques should be implemented. Consequently the Bureau of Mines has prepared this circular to disseminate information on gold and silver leaching practices, techniques, and problem. Engineering data gathered from 26 operations indicate that most ores are leached in heaps following crushing and distribution on pads. Metal values are recovered from cyanide leach solutions using either zinc precipitation or charcoal adsorption. Potential problems that my hamper on block development of a leaching operation are poor percolation characteristics of the ore, calcium salt buildup, low temperatures, and solution losses. Australia has many potentially important tin deposits, particularly on the eastern shore of the continent and in Tasmania. A number of these have been worked on a meagre scale, while some of them, because of metallurgical, transport, and other difficulties, have not as yet been developed.Believing that the full development of the tin fields of the Commonwealth of Australia is in part dependent upon the adoption of the most efficient methods of milling and smelting, the Development and Migration Oommission arranged for the first-mentioned author to visit the mining fields of Cornwall, one of the oldest tin-producing districts of the world, and prepare a report for the information of the Commission.This paper, now presented to the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy with the hope that it will assist the full development of tin mining in Australia, is the joint work of both authors.For over two thousand years tin has been produced from the Cornish mines. Even the ancient Greek historians made mention of tin mining in Cornwall, and it is probable that during the earliest periods the mining was alluvial. As early as 1602 a stamp battery working in Cornwall was described, and in 1671 calcination and buddling was a recognised scheme of treating pyritic ore. In the first half of the 16th century the output of tin from Cornwall was 700 tons per annum, and, from then on, production increased to the maximum in 1914 of 6500 tons. At present (Oct., 1929) the Cambourne-Redruth area produces over 95% of the Cornish tin output. This area includes such mines as the South Crofty, East Pool, Dolcoath, Parkanchy, Polhigey, and Wheal Kitty. The remaining 5% is largely supplied by the Levant and Geevor mines at Pendeen, St. Just area, near Land's End.

Fine grinding in an air swept and a grate discharge ball mill working in closed circuit with a forced vortex air classifier has been investigated in continuous laboratory scale. Minerals with different physical properties were ground down to 40, 20, and 10 micron top size. The shape of the product particle size distribution curve was investigated and specific surface (BET) was measured. During production of material with top size of 40 microns in an air swept mill, the capacity was up to 25% higher when compared to a grate discharge mill. This difference dropped to 180A during production of 10 micron top size material. A corresponding decrease in power consumption was observed. An important finding is that by regulation of the air flow rate through the mill, it is possible to achieve products with different specific surfaces and particle size distribution curve steepness. During production of the 10 pm material, the specific surface could be varied in the range 3 to 4.5 m2/g. Such powders could hardly be produced in a grate discharge mill because fine particles coated the grinding media and the lining. On the other hand the internal classification in the air swept mill kept the size distribution of the mill content relatively free of fines. This prevented a similar slowing-down of the air swept grinding process.

The American water-jacket furnace is the outgrowth of lead-smelting at Eureka, Nev., subsequently developed in Utah and Colorado. Early smelting in Virginia, New England, or the Missouri-Kansas-Illinois district seems to have had no direct influence in the development of this furnace. First Decade, 1870 to 1880. In 1870, the draft-furnace was used in Nevada, coincidentally with the first crude sandstone blast furnaces, which were 2 or 3 ft. sq., with Sturtevant fans or small Roots blowers, and sheet-iron or water-cooled tuyeres. Stetefeldt, Liebenau, Albert Arents, and 0. H. Hahn mere the early metallurgical leaders. Arents's siphon-tap and the re-establishment of the furnace-bosh mere the most important improvements of the decade. Second Decade, 1880 to 1890. At first there were ,many small local plants; but by the time Eureka had reached its maximum production of lead-ore, two custom works (the Eureka and the Richmond) were treating all the ore, the miners having learned the economy of smelting at larger and well-constructed plants. In the early eighties, most of the features of modern practice were already discernible at Salt Lake, Leadville, Denver, and Pueblo. The small square sandstone furnaces had been replaced by rectangular water-jacket furnaces, mostly 36 in. wide, and from 60 to 80 in. long at the tuyeres, which entered between cast-iron water-jackets. As part of its mission to reduce pollution associated with mineral production, the Bureau of Mines is developing a dewatering technique for phosphatic clay waste that uses a flocculant, polyethylene oxide (PEO). This flocculant forms strong, stable flocs, which can be partially dewatered on a static screen and dewatered further on a rotary screen. Using this technique, a field test unit (FTU) was operated at a nominal 100 gal/min. Consolidated phosphatic clay material containing 20 percent solids was produced when feed slurries of 3 percent solids were treated with 0.69 pound of PEO per ton of feed solids. Pit and column tests indicated that the PEO-treated material continued to dewater; compacted products containing 40 percent solids were obtained after 45 days.

The determination of suitable and safe annealing temperatures is one of the most important problems arising in the operation of a copper rolling mill. Certain of the larger mills have worked this problem out for themselves and in these mills the operation has become more or less standardized. In some of the mills pyrometers are used to measure the temperature of the annealing furnaces and careful watch is kept to see that overheating does not take place. In a considerable number of the mills, however, dependence is placed entirely on the judgment of the operator. The almost total lack of literature bearing on this subject seems sufficient warrant for the publication of this paper. ' The discussion of this subject naturally divides itself into two parts: (1) The effect of annealing temperature on physical properties; and (2) changes in the microstructure of refined copper due to cold rolling and annealing. I. The Effect of Annealing Temperature on Physical Properties For the purpose of investigating this phase of the subject six test bars were selected, varying in oxygen content between the limits of 0.036 and 0.070 per cent. A process for winning copper from pelletized chalcocite concentrate without matte smelting and converting is under development at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center of the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The new procedure includes a two-stage fluid-bed treatment in which the pelletized concentrate with 33% Cu and 7% S is first desulfurized to about 0.5% S in an oxidizing atmosphere, and then metallized by reduction with hydrogen. The reduced product is melted with flux to separate metallic copper from the gangue. The metal must be refined to remove residual sulfur and iron. The pelletizing of the fine concentrate into mini-pellets prior to fluid-bed treatment is an important feature of the process, because it permits shorter reaction time, decreases dusting, and facilitates subsequent processing.

BASED on theories of ullins," the mechanisms of grain-boundary grooving have been determined for low-melting metals such as copper in an inert atmospheres or in liquid lead.4 The purpose of this investigation was to study grain-boundary grooving in the refractory Group VI-A metals, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, and the bcc solid-solution alloys, r-35e, 0-33e,= and -25e,' at 0.6 to 0.9 of included to see whether Mullins' theories were applicable to them as well. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The materials chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, Cr-35Re, Mo-33Re, and W-25Re were in the form of 0.050-cm-thick sheet assaying 99.98 pct or better. The nominal carbon level was generally 30 ppm. The oxygen + nitrogen + hydrogen content was -50 ppm. Mo-33Re and W-25Re were prepared by powder-metallurgy methods and supplied by Chase Brass and Copper Co. The remaining materials were arc-cast. Chromium and Cr-35Re were prepared at Battelle by arc melting, extruding, swaging, and rolling. Mo-0.003C was supplied by Climax Molybdenum Co., and Mo-0.02C and tungsten by Universal Cyclops Corp. As a source of liquid metals, tin and silver granules assaying 99.98 pct were used. Spectrographic analyses indicated the presence of -100 ppm each of iron and silicon. Vacuum melting reduced the combined gas content to c5 ppm (2.60,, 0.9N2, 0.4H2 in tin and l.602, 0.7N2, and c0.04H2 in silver). Specimens were prepared for grain-boundary grooving. Coupons 0.5 by 1.5 cm with a small hole in one end, or substrates 1.5 by 1.5 cm, were cut from sheet. The specimens were annealed in containers of the same material to provide a vapor-solid equilibrium as well as to protect them from gaseous impurities. Outgassing was done at 2 x 10"5 mm for 15 to 30 min at 1150°C for chromium and Cr-35Re, 1750°C for molybdenum and Mo-33Re, and 2600°C for tungsten and W-25Re. Then recrystallization to a stable grain size of about 0.5 mm was accomplished by annealing at least 1 hr at 1600°C for chromium, 1800°C for Cr-35Re, 2350°C for molybdenum, and 2300°C for Mo-33Re in a rhenium-element resistance furnace under 1 atm of static argon or helium. DURING the year 1873, my attention was called to the frequent accidents, resulting from the breaking of rails, on the different railroads in this country, and I was requested to investigate the subject. The plan of investigation I proposed was to ascertain, in as many cases as possible, the exact history of broken rails, both in this country and in Europe; to collect information in Europe relating to the tests which rails used there were required to undergo, and to experiment upon the pieces of rails broken on the road, with a view to ascertain whether their fracture was due to their chemical constitution, bad manufacture, to a reduction in strength owing to temperature, or to physical changes in the constitution of the rail. The investigation was commenced by the collection of statistics, and for this purpose I spent several months in Europe, collecting information on the subject of broken rails, as well as the life of iron and steel rails generally, and inquiring into the systems of purchasing and of testing them employed by the railroads there, intending, on my return, to make a series of analyses of rails broken, both in this country and in Europe; to ascertain, if possible, how far great cold had an influence on the fracture ; to examine whether the rail broken, either on the road or afterwards, underwent, at or about the fracture, any physical change, and to make a series of experiments on the strength of rails manufactured in the United States or sold in the American market. Unfortunately, the panic of 1873 came on, just before my return from Europe, and prevented the carrying out of the larger part of the plan proposed ; as, however, I had collected in the meantime, a large number of statistics of different kinds from all parts of Europe, and had made a number of interesting experiments and investigations, I have thought it would be worth while to communicate some

The success of the excavation of a sewage tunnel in a very extreme geological conditions, from river deposits and sandy layers to hard dolomite, and several meters below the estuary under the sea water influence, shows that the choice of a right equipment together with the use of chemical products like foam and polymers enable to dig tunnels in unexpected areas and give solution to the environmental problems. The paper describes the excavation and support process as well as the adopted solutions in every material and during the cross through the intermediate shafts, also under sea influence.

THE telluride of gold and silver, the " Tellurgold-silver" of Hausmann, and " Petzite" of other mineralogists, has been found in so few localities, that a late discovery of the mineral in a new locality may not be uninteresting. So far this mineral has been found in Europe only in a few mines in Transylvania, and in Hungary ; and in the United States in the Stanislaus Mine, in Calaveras County, California, in the Golden Rule Mine, Tuolumne County, California, and in a mine in Montana, the precise locality of which I have forgotten. The new locality referred to is at the Red Cloud Mine, Gold Hill District, Boulder County, Colorado.
