"In-mine airborne particulate samples have been successfully collected and the relative amounts of diesel and coal determined using the Laser Raman Quantitative Analysis (LRQA) method. This method allows analysis of filters which have been collected by a method similar to that used to determine the airborne respirable dust concentration in us underground coal mines. Samples were taken near the feeder-breaker, on haulage vehicles, and in the returns. Sampling methodologies were developed for coal-only and diesel-only particulate reference samples with sufficient filter loading for the LRQA method. A statistical analysis of reproducibility has been carried out. Samples have been collected simultaneously at two locations using the LRQA and the size-selective sampling methods. Good agreement between the two methods has been found.INTRODUCTIONThe goal of this research has been to develop the Laser Raman Quantitative Analysis (LRQA) method to measure the composition of respirable particulate, i.e. the fractions of coal and of diesel particulate, in the mine ambient air. In earlier Bureau of Mines sponsored research, we successfully demonstrated that the LRQA method could be used to measure the fraction of Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) in coal/diesel particulate mixtures which were prepared in the laboratory.(I) 'The immediate objective was to test and refine this LRQA method on samples collected in a diesel underground coal mine.Specific objectives required to meet this goal include:I) Develop in-mine sample collection methods which will insure sufficient particulate loading on filters for LRQA. ,2) Develop methodology for in-mine collection of reference samples (""coal-only"" and ""diesel-only"" filters) which arc required for quantitative LRQA. 3) Analyze precision and accuracy of the LRQA method. 4) Compare composition measurements with another analytical method, i.e. the University of Minnesota/Bureau of Mines size selective sampling Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI) method.An advantage of the LRQA method is that it allows analysis of filters which have been collected by a method similar to that used to determine the respirable dust concentration in US underground coal mines. No new sampling instruments and techniques are required. Transfer of sample from collection substrate to analysis substrate is not necessary. Furthermore, other analyses can be made on the same sample since the technique is nondestructive."

This report has been prepared in response to a request by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Fairbanks Alaska District Office that the Bureau of Mines quantitatively assess the potential supply of minerals from undiscovered deposits in the White Mountains National Recreation Area (WMNRA) and the western part of the North Steese National Conservation Area (SNCA) in Alaska. The assessment will be used to assist in future land-use decision-making. Resource Management Plans (RMPs) for the WMNRA and the SNCA were approved by the BLM in 1986. These plans imposed significant restrictions on new mineral development in the two areas. The level of public concern regarding these actions, especially on the part of the mining industry, has spurred BLM to seek additional information about the potential supply of minerals from the two areas with assistance from the Bureau of Mines. The assessment focuses on an area within the WMNRA and the SNCA which has been administratively closed to mineral entry. The study area encompassed approximately 1.24 million acres and included all of the WMNRA and the western portion of the North SNCA (fig. ES-1). Three quantitative estimates of the potential supply of minerals from the study area were developed: 1) For all lands in the study area, assuming that they are open to mineral entry-the baseline analysis; 2) For those lands which have been closed to mineral entry; and 3) For eleven prospective mineral activity areas, assuming that all are open to mineral entry.

"The aim of any mine design is to ensure that the excavations remain stable for the period they will be in use. Various pillar systems are used to ensure that underground stopes remain stable and that mining activities do not affect the surface infrastructure through either surface subsidence or seismicity. Intermediate-depth platinum mines make use of in-stope pillars designed to fail while the pillars are being cut at the mining face. The pillar stress exceeds the loading capacity and the pillars crush as a result. The aim of the paper is to provide an overview of in-stope crush pillars. This will include the application, behaviour, function, mechanism, impact, and design of a crush pillar system."

"Falling rock is one of the major causes of serious injuries and deaths in Swedish mines. The research at the Division of Mining and Underground Construction was therefore directed toward controlled blasting in hard intense jointed rock.The project was started with an extensive literature review. Model tests with a new equivalent model material have been initiated to find ways of improving blasting techniques. The result showed that long cracks arise at the perimeter holes when there is a long time delay between adjacent holes. This led to the theoretical development of a new initiation method with ultra short delays (1,5 ms) f or controlled blasting, called ""Cutblasting"".Full-scale tests have been done at LKAB in Malmberget in hard intense jointed magnetite ore. Four different types of perimeter charges have been tested, namely: tube charges, ANFO mixed with plastic beads, detonating cord and linear shaped charges. Three types of initiation of the perimeter holes have been used, conventional (half-second delay detonators), instantaneous and ultra short ""cutblasting initiation"" (1,5 ms delay). The change in rock strength before and after blasting has been studied with bore hole periscope, vibration measurement and ocular observation of the rock surfaces.Thefull-scale tests showed that ""cutblasting"" with detonating cord in the perimeter holes gave the smallest damage to the surrounding rock. A combination of cutblasting initiation and tube charges are anticipated to give an even better result. A new method of controlled blasting using linear-shaped charges has also been tested, however, this charge type needs further development.The full- scale test also showed that the damage which can be seen on the rock surf ace is about the same for different controlled blasting methods but the not-visual-damage zone varies as much as from 0,1 to 0,7 m.A new classification system for controlled blasting regarding the damage to the surrounding rock has been devised."

An extension of lognormal theory and its application to risk analysis models for new mining ventures by B. M. WAINSTEIN*, B.Sc., M.B.A. (Witwatersrand) (Visitor) The lognormal distribution, which remains the most popular distribution model for ore values, is investigated. The T-distribution, an integral part of this theory, is dependent on the sample size, n, and the unknown population parameter, o2, which cannot be integrated out. Hence, o2constitutes a nuisance parameter. In this study, the robustness of the T-distribution to changes in o2 is examined. It is found that the T-distribution is robust for 0,1 <= o2 >= 2,5, a domain covering most practical applications of the lognormal theory. By the use of o2 = 0,7, multiplier factors, which facilitate the computation of the confidence limits, are derived for a comprehensive set of confidence levels.

D. W. Fuerstenau (Associate Professor of Metallurgy, Dept. of Mineral Technology, University of California, Berkeley, Calif.) and D. A. Sullivan, Jr. (with the University of California) — Messrs. Bergstrom, Sollenberger and Mitchell have shown in two excellent papers that the energy per unit mass required for the breaking of spheres is inversely proportional to the size modulus of the fragments of the broken spheres. They found that the fragments of spheres broken within a steel enclosure were finer than those produced by breaking spheres encased in gelatin. This results from utilization of part of the strain energy at fracture for secondary breakage. For spheres not encased in gelatin, these authors found that after fracture the fragments of the spheres possess kinetic energy amounting to 45% of the strain energy needed for initial fracture. Breakage of a sphere in gelatin results in waste of this kinetic energy, whereas breakage inside the steel container makes use of this kinetic energy for further size

Investigations were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to develop flowsheets for the recovery of tungsten and gold from four Alaskan scheelite-bearing ores. Basic gravity concentration and cyanide leach tests were performed on all samples. About 46 pct of the tungsten and 30 pct of the gold from one sample were recovered in a gravity concentrate containing 24 pet W03 (tungstic oxide) and 119 troy ounces per short ton (tr oz/st) Au. Froth flotation of the gravity concentrate resulted in separate tungsten and gold products with grades of 38 pct W03 and 2,720 tr oz/st Au and recoveries of 60 and 97 pet, respectively. Additional gold was recovered from the gravity and flotation tailings by cyanidation. Overall recoveries of tungsten and gold from this sample were 28 and 94 pet, respeetively. A flowsheet with mill design parameters was developed that consisted of (1) free gold and scheelite recovery by gravity methods and froth flotation and (2) fme-grained gold recovery by cyanide leaching of reground gravity and flotation tailings, followed by a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit. Data were developed from the Bond mill work index, gold and tungsten flotation, conventional and high-rate thickening, cyanide leaching, and CIP adsorption tests.

Most publicity about the copper industry nowa- days is focused on the adequacy of ore reserves and on excessive mining capacity. These concerns, stemming from public awareness of actual and poten- tial shortages and oversupplies, relate to production rather than consumption. Perhaps the reason for this one-sided view is that copper is thought of as a commodity which is conspicuously traded in world markets, rather than as one of many industrial materials that serve today&apos;s rapidly changing tech- nology. Copper differs from other widely traded com- modities in that its real cost of production has pro- gressively increased since World War II. The reasons for the increase are identifiable by analyzing operations in one of the world&apos;s large producing centres, the copper province of Arizona. Another respect in which copper differs from some other com- modities is that increases in demand occur less auto- matically in the case of copper than they tend to in commodities whose consumption is more directly related to population growth. The copper industry&apos;s current inability to generate and attract needed investment capital is attributable to these differences between copper and other com- modities; it suggests that the concept of copper purely as a commodity is outdated. The key to the problem is better integration between the activities of copper producers and users. Depending on cir- cumstances, integration takes various forms- for example, investment tied to long-term sales con- tracts between producers in developing countries and consumers overseas; common ownership of pro- ducing and manufacturing facilities in industrialized

The effects of the solute elements lead and bismuth on grain growth in zone -refined tin have been investigated. At low temperatures, viz. below 160°C. or at high concentrations, viz. greater than 0.03 at. pct, the temperature dependence of grain growth was found to be constant. A correlation was found to exist between the rates of grain growth in the presence of solute impurities and the factor [C Ir - 1]2 , where C is the solute concentration, r is the radius of solvent atom, and r&apos; is radius of solute atom. It is shown that the Liicke and Detert theory does not give a satisfactory explanation of the results obtained. INVESTIGATIONS of grain growth in zone-refined lead and tin and some effects of solute elements on grain growth in these metals have been reported by Bolling and winegardly2 and Holmes and winegard? The present investigation is an extension of the previous work, and was undertaken to provide additional results which might make it possible to discover the mechanism whereby the rate of grain growth is affected by the presence of foreign solute atoms. The experimental procedure was exactly the same as that described previously.3&apos;4 Figs. 1 and 2 show the results obtained with lead and bismuth additions over the same temperature range, viz. 167" to 220°C, as that used for the investigation of grain growth in zone-refined tin.3 Fig. 3 shows the results obtained for zone-refined tin and for this tin with lead solute additions over an extended temperature range. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS As mentioned previously,3 the character of grain growth in the particular zone-refined tin used in these experiments appears to change as the temperature of annealing falls below about 160°C. The grain growth became somewhat irregular and was characterized by a jaggedness of many of the grain boundaries. The reason for this change is not known, but may be due either to residual impurity effects or possibly an oxide precipitation. It was obvious that normal grain growth only occurred in the zone-refined tin through the high-temperature range 167" to 220°C, and so the effects of solute atoms on grai11 growth over the two temperature ranges will be discussed separately. a) Effect of Impurity on Grain Growth in the Temperature :Range Above 167°C. It is apparent from Figs. 1 and 2 that, for low concentrations of solute, the rates of grain growth tend towards a common value as the melting temperature of tin is approached. As the concentration of lead is increased, the rate of grain growth close to the melting temperature is also reduced, and at high concentrations the temperature dependence of the rate of grain growth appears approximately constant. It should be noteil that the effect of bismuth is greater than that of the same concentration of lead, but both these solutes have a smaller effect on the rate of grain growth than silver, as seen from an earlier investigation of Holmes and Winegard. "The Mountain Lake deposit is a tabular sandstone-type uranium deposit, hosted by the basal unit of Middle Proterozoic Dismal Lakes Group. Uranium occurs mainly as sooty pitchblende disseminated in stratiform lenses within gently dipping quartzose sandstone. It is associated with copper sulphides, pyrite, hematite, and traces of nickel and cobalt arsenides and of silver.Exploration HistoryUranium showings on the PEC claim group were discovered during 1969 by an airborne radiometric survey carried out over the Dismal Lakes-Great Bear Lake area by Aquitaine of Canada Limited (Bizard and Salat, 1969). Some drilling was done in the vicinity of the showings in 1975 by the company under a joint venture with Eldorado Nuclear Limited but the results were not encouraging (Hassard and Woollett, 1975). During 1972, Trigg, Woollett and Associates Limited conducting surveys for Imperial Oil Limited, discovered numerous high-grade radioactive boulders scattered over a distance of several kilometres north and west of the showings, and the area north of the PEC claims was staked as the YUK claims (Ahuja, 1974). A systematic study of the boulder distribution and Pleistocene geology suggested a source additional to the showings. More intensive exploration followed, and in 1976 drilling just north of the PEC claim group boundary intersected the main deposit at a depth of 75 m to 150 m, beneath overburden up to 60 m thick. Part of the deposit extends into the PEC claim group which is under exploration by the Aquitaine-Cominco Joint Venture.The following brief description is based on the presentations in 1978 by F. The stainless steel industry re1ies on nitric-hydrofluoric acid (HNO,/HF) pickling solutions to remove surface contaminants and maintain the corrosion resistance of the steel. More stringent environmental guide1ines are expected to be placed on the disposal of these solutions which could significantly increase processing costs. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting research to develop a process for recycling depleted pickling solutions, thus reducing the quantity of by product acids generated. Research has shown that F- can be liberated from the predominant iron fluoride species (FeF,&apos;) by using oxalic acid in an electrodialysis cell. Ion selective membranes allow dissolved metals in the depleted solution to be replaced with hydronium ions by metathesis, thereby regenerating the HF. The regenerated HN03/HF is then retained in the pick1ing solution. This paper reports on the research effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Rolla Research Center to apply electrodialytic recycling to HN03/HF pickling solutions.

The Leigh Creek Coalfield is owned and operated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia to supply fuel to the Northern Power Station. To supply electricity at lowest cost, a costing and decision process that establishes the role of the Leigh Creek Coalfield in the overall system planning and operation is required. The costing is integrated in that it is based not just on a particular mine plan but on the wider need to supply a particular electrical demand. The detail costing has evolved over time from manual to main-frame computer to microcomputer techniques. Now there is a choice between fast consistent costs and a slower but more detailed and flexible costing.

Compañía Minera Antamina is a polymetallic mining complex that produces copper and zinc concentrates as primary products and molybdenum and lead/bismuth/silver concentrates as by-products. In 2007, Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) was contracted to increase SAG mill throughput by integrating and optimising blast fragmentation, crushing and grinding for the harder M4/M4A (CuZn) ores. Following the implementation of recommendations provided by Metso PTI, the SAG mill throughput increased from 2750tph to reach an average of 3600tph for the remainder of 2007. Due to continued application of mine to mill integration and optimisation philosophy, by 2010, the concentrator consistently exceeded the target of 4400tph while processing harder CuZn ores.

From time to time, one of the authors has had occasion to investigate the graphitizing reaction and has published the results mainly as discussion&apos; of the work of other investigators. In view, therefore, of the diversity of both observations and interpretation, it seemed well to attempt, a revision of the entire subject in the Research Laboratory of the National Malleable Castings Co. The work consisted of a careful study of a single, impure, iron-carbon alloy. The material, which may be considered typical low-carbon white cast iron of the malleable industry, was an air-furnace iron of the following composit,ion: carbon 2.30 per cent., silicon 1.20 per cent., manganese 0.29 per cent., phosphorus 0.156 per cent., sulfur 0.048 per cent. The freezing range extended from 1213&apos; to 1132&apos; C., the latter figure agreeing with Gontermann&apos;s data.2 We have attempted to define the equilibrium diagram of this alloy, in the stable condition as related to the mctastable diagr,aui,- from a temperature somewhat below the euteetic freezing point to a temperature l>clow Arl and for a graphitic-carbon content from practically notliing to the original total rarbon of the specimen (see Fig. 6). Para produzir os aços bifásicos galvanizados com revestimento de Zn-Fe as tecnologias de galvanização foram adaptadas visando à produção de aços com alta resistência, resistentes à corrosão e boa conformabilidade. Desta forma, e considerando as deformações obtidas na estampagem tornou importante a caracterização em laboratório da influência do nível e do caminho de deformação na geração de trincas do revestimento com Zn-Fe aplicado a um aço bifásico. O presente trabalho avaliou o efeito dos caminhos de Deformação Uniaxial, Deformação Plana e Estiramento Biaxial Simétrico na evolução das trincas do revestimento Zinco-Ferro (Galvannealed-GA) e sua conectividade considerando o aço base Dual Phase 600. Foi observado que aumento da área composta por trincas ocorre com o aumento do nível de deformação para todos os caminhos avaliados. O Estiramento Biaxial Simétrico foi o caminho de deformação que mais influenciou no aumento da área com trincas na superfície do revestimento e na conexão destas trincas com o aço base. Isso ocorreu em função do estado de tensão (tração-tração) imposta à superfície e à seção dos revestimentos. Mesmo sendo observada a conectividade das trincas com o aço base não foi verificado visualmente defeitos de desplacamento do revestimento tais como Powdering e Flaking.

The $58,000,000.00 Columbia Heights Metro Station project (Section E3-a) forms a part of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority&apos;s (WMATA) Greenbelt Route - Green Line subway system. The Greenbelt route is one often segments that make up WMATA&apos;s subway system. Construction of the "cut and cover" reinforced concrete station includes 600 linear feet of an underground center platform, two ancillary service areas totaling 466 linear feet, two surface entrances, and vent shafts (See Figure No. 1). Station subgrade is approximately 60 feet below existing grade. The project can be divided into five main areas: 1. North Service Rooms and Passageway; 2. West Entrance and West Passageway; 3. East Entrance; 4. Center Platform; 5. South Service Rooms. Station dimensions are approximately 1068 feet long by 64 feet wide. Construction commenced at the site in January of 1995 and is expected to be completed by December of 1999. Franki Northwest Company, Crofton, Maryland, was awarded a subcontract by general contractor Blake Construction Company, Washington, D.C, to install the support of excavation and temporary decking systems. Franki&apos;s scope of work included the installation of 490 drilled soldier piles plus two elevator shafts totaling 29,700 linear feet of drilling; 1,150 tons of steel decking covered by 37,000. square feet of precast concrete deck planks; 120,000. square feet of timber lagging; 2,500. tons of struts and wales; and temporary support of underground utilities. In conjunction with Franki&apos;s work, Bencor Corporation of America, Dallas, Texas, constructed parallel, 600 foot long slurry walls which serve as permanent walls for the center platform portion of the station.

An analysis of the geologic structure of an area of Buchanan County, Va., was made by the Bureau of Mines using imagery from an airborne AN/APQ-97 side-looking radar system to evaluate that mapping technique for delineating structural features that may cause mining problems. Side-looking airborne radar (SLAR) was found to be a useful remote sensing tool for geologic structural analysis, Fault and joint systems identified by lineaments and linear patterns in the imagery were verified by surface and in-mine observations. Little Paw Paw fault was extended 10 miles by SLAR lineament analysis. A 22-mile fault, here named the Bishop-Bradshaw Creek fault, was mapped by lineament analysis and verified by observation of the fault on the Bishop Coal Co. mine map and on offset patterns of commercial gas production along the fault and surface observation of lineament along the fault. Three major super-imposed joint sets and several fault or fractured zones were identified by SLAR lineament analysis, showing more complex structure than earlier mapping indicated. SLAR imagery accurately delineated structural features that are known to affect gas migration and accumulation and that weaken the rock forming the immediate roof to mine workings, causing mining problems and potentially hazardous environment in the mines.

Between February and August of 1986, Dr Alfred Petrick visited New Zealand sponsored under a Fulbright grant administered by the New Zealand-United States Educational Foundation. The grant supported a research project completed by Dr Petrick having as an objective, the preparation of a preliminary economic evaluation of the mining of six Otago lignite deposits as a source of energy for steam power generation or in liquid fuels. The research is limited to consideration of preliminary geological and engineering data on the six deposits and to the time constraints of the Fulbright visit. This paper is a summary of the final Fulbright report. The complete report including the listings of the computer programs is available from the Otago School of Mines.

An evaluation of a pilot scale Delkor horizontal belt filter at Bellambi&apos;s South Bulli Colliery showed high productivities and low moisture contents for a range of feed slurries. When treating flotation concentrate, a productivity in excess of 1000 kg/m2/hr (dry) at a moisture content of less than 22 per cent was obtained. The results indicated the belt filter had a capacity twice that of conventional drum or disc filters, and was capable of dewatering a very fine, thickened, classifying cyclone overflow slurry to an acceptable moisture content. The superior performance of this filter is discussed in terms of the factors influencing cake formation and the stratification of solids in the filter bowl of a conventional rotary vacuum drum filter.
