The Bureau of Mines is engaged in systematic evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases. These studies are designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy that will facilitate the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena. This report is the second of a series3/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant sys tans. These calculations had as their objective evaluation of the constant pressure flame temperatures of methane-air and propane-air flames at atmospheric pressure as functions of the mixture ratio and inlet temperature of the fuel-air stream.

From a distance, the 0.75-km (0.5-mile) rail line that sits in the shadows of Vale-Inco?s Stobie Mine outside of Sudbury, Ontario could be mistaken for a standard conveyor belt hauling ore from the nearby mine. But with its large, yellow-painted loop and interconnected green rail cars that invert themselves on the loop before correcting with a smooth rollover further down the track, one might assume that this is some sort of test track for a new roller coaster. The fact of the matter is that it is the proving ground for Rail-Veyor technology, a technology that the company hopes will one day change the face of ore transportation in surface and underground mines around the world. With a line of linked, low-profile rail cars that are capable of carrying up to 1 t (1.1 st) per car of ore by way of simple, above ground, lightweight rail track, the technology is not groundbreaking. In fact, it was developed in the 1960s for the French State Railroad. A demonstration plant for the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research was installed in 2000 and the first commercial under-ground installation was in 2007 in South Africa at Harmony Gold?s Phakisa Mine. There, a 4.7-km- (2.9-mile-) long tram between two shafts operates three Rail-Veyor trains on a shared track. The difference is that the application that is being tested day-and-night in Sudbury is getting closer to wide production, thanks to the use of computer controlled automation that has helped turn an old idea into a cost-effective modern solution.

The separation of albites from quartz by flotation applying the conventional HF-methods is no longer acceptable from an environmental and health point of view. Therefore, the search for a new reagent scheme without using HF depressor for separation of albite from quartz is under consideration. The flotation behaviour of ore mineral components depends on the produced hydrophobic or hydrophilic surface coverage (chemical functionalization). Currently we have excellent possibility of monitoring surface composition and structure at molecular and atomic levels at surfaces of natural minerals contacted with aqueous solutions of collectors, activators, depressants which is vitally important for the understanding of the surface chemistry that govern selective and efficient flotation. Detailed surface characterization of minerals before and after their exposition to different solution conditions was performed by the most modern spectroscopic techniques such as developed by us the infrared external reflection technique combined with spectral simulation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It is possible to monitor surface reactions which facilitate the separation process and those which bring disadvantage to selective flotation. At first we found that a small amount of ?mineral impurity? presented in natural ore could play important role in selective hydrophobization process. It was found that the pH of solution (parameter possible to control) and natural mineral impurities present in mineral samples (parameter related to ore origin) play a very important role in the separation process. Another important parameter is interaction between minerals, quartz and albite, present in aqueous solution. The limitation of flotation separation resulting from chemistry will be discussed. Moreover, the most promising scheme for separation of albites from quartz will be examined.

Fine coal aggregation in concentrated coal-water suspensions was studied through steady-state rheological measurements. The wettability of coal particles was modified by dry oxidation of a bituminous coal. The degree of hydrophobicity was monitored using film flotation. The rheological measurements revealed that hydrophobic coal particles aggregate in aqueous suspensions, over a wide pH range, and produce slurries with high yield stresses. As the degree of coal oxidation increases, the coal particles become more hydrophilic and such suspensions exhibit lower yield stresses values. The yield stress values for suspensions prepared from oxidized/hydrophilic coal become a strong function of pH and correlate well with the surface charge as determined through electroacoustic measurements. These results indicate that the yield stress of aqueous suspensions of coal, and hence coal particles aggregation, is strongly affected by the wettability of coal particles.

The solving of complex metallurgical flowsheet calculations by hand is, at best, a tedious job which often proves that engineers, too, make mistakes. The high cost and long lead time associated with manual flowsheet solutions have led several organizations involved in research, development and construction of extractive metallurgical processes to search for computerized systems which will solve flowsheet calculations. Although design flowsheet programs have been developed by the chemical industry, the ability to solve flowsheets involving particulate solids is usually overlooked. A new computer applications system has been developed at Fluor Mining and Metals which has been designed to accommodate the type of design flowsheets required by the minerals industry. By employing the sequential modular computation technique, a library of metallurgical pro- cessing routines may' be accumulated which are used by a universal executive system. This technique enables rapid solution of new process) .flow- sheets with only a minimum of additional programming effort. The implementation of the FLEXMET flowsheet solution system is the subject of this paper. Some of the major features of the system which are examined include interactive input data handling, automated flowsheet calculation order arrangement, flexible accomodation of unit operations models and advanced management of recycle and specification control calculations.

The value of Australia's education services exports increased to over $15 billion dollars in 2009, placing education as the third overall export earner behind coal and iron ore; however there are concerns over the impact of emerging policies on the future of both the industry and the provision of mining education. Policies have impacts on the growing number of international rankings (or league tables) of mining jurisdictions and universities. A high position in such rankings might be used as a measure of perceived quality with benefit to those at the top and to the detriment to those lower down.    Top performing companies in the relatively new domain of sustainability have been shown to achieve better financial performance than their industry competitors, assisting them in attracting top quality committed staff, hence positioning themselves well for the future. The world's mining companies, jurisdictions and universities are now ranked with results in the public domain. It is argued as to the validity of the data or perceptions used in such rankings, but there is no doubt they are influential in determining the flow of dollars around the globe. By investing your pension fund assets in the shares of the top performing companies, by placing your exploration dollars in a country at the top of such a list of attractive jurisdictions, attending or recruiting from a University at the top of the rankings - risk must surely be reduced?   While savings and risk reduction can undoubtedly result from the introduction of new technologies developed through appropriate R&D (the other core activity of a university), the maintenance of a very high level of exploration and production performance through dedicated highly skilled staff every hour of every day quietly improves financial performance, while avoiding safety, environmental and/or community incidents (ie protects the 'triple bottom line'). As always risk reduction comes down to enabling quality people to do a quality job - through the actions of such people we can sustain the global mining industry and secure our social license to operate. However, there is global concern over where the numbers of such people, including those with the recently required skills in sustainability, are going to come from.   This presentation will discuss some of the complexity and interactions involved in the development of such rankings, the dangers inherent in their simple acceptance and use, plus indicate some of the directions mining educators might take to sustain and increase the supply of quality graduates to the global mining industry. EXTENSIVE research and development was performed on the manganese-copper vibration-damping alloys to determine the relationship between the properties of the alloys and variations in composition, fabrication, Mid heat treatment. Mn-Cu alloys with unusually high specific damping capacity, 20 to 25 percent at a stress of 5,000 psi, have also the following useful properties: Tensile strength, 90,000 to 110,000 psi; yield strong, 60,000 to psi; elongation, 20 to 25 percent; hardness, 90 Rockwell B; and fatigue limit at, 28,000 to 30,000 psi. Both standard and special methods of testing were employed to obtain data on strength, modulus, hardness, resistivity, dilatation, micro-structure, crystal lattice, and damping capacity. The extensive tabular and graphical data on these properties are presented for alloys containing 50 to 85 percent as quenched d solution) and after various aging treatments. Expansion coefficients for all Mn-Cu solid solutions are graphed and a dilatometer study of contraction during aging is reported. Although high damping capacity is associated with aging to precipitate a-Mn from solid solution, with a cubic-tetragonal transformation and with the occurrence of antiferromagnetic ordering in Mn-Cu alloys, a tenable theory of the damping mechanism has not been reached.

THE recent installation of a combination dust catcher, gas washer and precipitator at Carrie blast furnaces of the Homestead Steel Works has given very satisfactory results. The following description of the gas-cleaning installation is based on actual operating experience. When Carrie blast furnace No. 3 was rebuilt the decision was made to fine-clean all the gas produced by the furnace, because the management wanted fine-cleaned gas for fuel in the stoves and boilers. In order to keep the installation cost as low as possible, the gas-cleaning system was streamlined. All by-pass lines and goggle valves for bypass lines were eliminated from the system. A radical departure from the use of 8-in. tubes in the Cottrell-type precipitators was made by using 12-in. diameter tubes in a single compartment, the single compartment being divided into two units by a single partition wall in the top header. THE FURNACE PROPER A few of the characteristic points and dimensions of the furnace proper are: [Hearth diameter 26 ft. o in. Bosh diameter 29 ft. 1 3/4 in. Stock-line diameter 20 ft. o in. Large-bell diameter 114 ft. 8 in. Small-bell diameter 6 ft. 6 in. Height of furnace from center of iron notch to bottom of large bell, closed 94 ft. 4 in. Height of furnace from center of iron notch to main platform 105 ft. o in.] The furnace top is equipped with a McKee revolving distributor, the operation of which is electrically interlocked with the skips, bell hoists, and coke-weighing and charging apparatus through a Freyn automatic charging control. The gas leaves the furnace first through four offtakes, 5 ft. g in. in diameter, then through uptakes that are approximately 85 ft. high, which feed into a single down-comer that is 9 ft. in diameter. DUST CATCHER The primary dust catcher installed (Fig. I) may be described as a single-cone type. The inlet pipe at the top of the dust catcher is g ft. in diameter; it is flared to a conical shape as it extends down inside the dust-catcher shell, which is 35 ft. in diameter, 37 ft. high on the straight side, and has a conical top and bottom. The slope of the bottom is 50° with the horizontal. The cone-shaped pipe inside the dust-catcher shell is 42 ft. high and is 19 ft. 7 in. in diameter at its bottom lip where it releases the gas in-

A zone of northwest trending dykes extends for over 600 km in the hinterland from Cairns to Mackay. In sate regions the zone is up to 120 km wide. Figure 1 shows their approximate extent, compiled from published regional maps and from specific studies in more limited areas : Palm Islands, Cardwell Ranges, Jourama Falls, Townsville area and Burdekin Delta. The context of the dyke swarm is the Tasman Orogenic Zone, the region of Eastern Australia conprised of Palaeozoic metamorphic, sedimentary, volcanic and plutonic rocks which has experienced a complex history and evolution. In the Whitsunday region, the Tam-an Zone also involves Cretaceous volcanism and plutonism. Geological relationships indicated a wide span of ages for the intrusions in the dyke, swarm zone. They intrude a range of volcanic and sedimentary rocks, and in some areas plutonic rocks. Older dykes, apparently part of the same regional swarm are intruded by sate of the granites.

GRAIN boundary sliding plays a part in the high-temperature deformation of polycrystalline solids, and many investigations1-11 have been carried out to determine the deformation contributed by this mechanism. The principal method employed has been to measure one of the components of the grain boundary displacement, see Fig. 1, at a large number of boundaries, and from the mean value so obtained to calculate the elongation contributed by sliding. A formula connecting these mean values and the elongation contributed is evidently required, and many have been derived. They are usually of the form where Egh is the tensile elongation contributed by sliding, is the mean value of the component, x, N is the mean number of grain boundaries intersecting a line of unit length, and K is a dimensionless parameter known as the averaging factor. Table I summarizes the equations used by various investigators. Examination of these shows that their derivations usually involve doubtful assumptions, and are often in serious error. The purpose of this note is to point out that rigorous solutions to the problem of calculating Egb from x have been available in the literature for some years.' Since this is so little known, and also the original derivations do not make some important points clear, it is proposed to rederive the basic equations. These will be extended further, and the conditions in which the extended equations may be applied will be indicated. The mean values of the components of the sliding vector (I, d, and I:, Fig. 1) will depend on the method by which boundaries are sampled in order to make measurements.3,11 Boundaries are usually sampled by marker lines parallel to the stress axis, or lines perpendicular to the stress axis, the measurement being made at the point where the marker line intercepts the boundary. We will denote the mean values determined by these various sampling methods as follows. lT, dT and vT are mean values obtained by making measurements at pointswhere a transverse line intercepts the boundary while lL, dL, and vl, are the mean values from a longitudinal line. The number of boundaries per unit length also may depend on the direction of measurement, and so we define NT and Nl to be the number of boundaries per unit length, after creep, in the transverse and longitudinal directions, respectively.

THE processes of superficial alteration depend on physical conditions, environment, geologic history and chemical and mineralogical composition. Superficial alteration is confined particularly to the zone of shallow circulation, as this is the zone of solution; its rocks are open and the circulation within it is compara-tively rapid. The enrichment of ore deposits in this zone, therefore, is of special interest. The depth of the vadose, or zone of shallow circula-tion, is variable, because its lower limit depends on the variable level of ground water. In moist, hilly countries its depth varies from a few feet to several hundred feet. In arid regions where the rainfall is low and evaporation great, this zone may extend to much greater depths. Permeability of the deposits . is essential to the downward migration of metals. In rocks, that have been fractured since the primary ore was deposited, there is generally more extensive and deeper enrichment than in ore deposits that have been but slightly fractured. A warm climate increases chemical action and abundant rain fall is favorable to enrichment. Low relief and slow erosion give long periods of weathering and thorough leaching.

Variation in air temperature in a cross-section of an underground airway by K. R. VOST, B.Sc. (Glas.), M.Sc. (N.S.W.) (Visitor) Measurements of air temperatures in underground airways are normally made at only one point in a cross-section, and the air tem peratures at other points in the cross-section are assumed not to differ significantly from this. This paper discusses measurements made at a number of points in fifty crosssections in airways with different air velocities and wetness of floor. These measurements show that significant variations of air temperature can occur in a given cross-section at a given time. The effects of such variations on the accuracy of measurement of rises in air temperature as air passes along an airway are discussed. The importance of considering experimental error in the measured rises in air temperature when attempting to validate theoretical and empirical methods of predicting such rises is also discussed.

The response of feldspar flotation to tallow diamine dioleate collector in the presence of sulfuric acid is studied using batch flotation experiments. Application of this nonhydrofluoric acid (non-HF) reagent system in the flotation of mineralogically and chemically different feldspar ores is compared with that of the conventional hydrofluoric acid system. The dependence of flotation recovery and concentrate grade on feed particle size distribution, conditioning time, pulp density, and pH, combined variation of collector and acid addition rates, sodium hydroxide concentration in the collector solution, and initial pulp pH Prior to conditioning is studied. The results have been discussed in relation to applicability of the non-HF system to plant trials, and the nature of the collector adsorption in the selective flotation of feldspar.

Development and Validation of Ore Characterisation Test and its Use in Variability Campaigns of Comminution Circuits Impact testing was developed by assessing the fragmentation characteristics of ore samples after controlled impact. Standard methods are, however, limited to relatively large and coarse samples, which thus precludes their use in early stages of projects, as well as where only drill cores are available. The method described in this paper is based on the same concepts of controlled ore breakage, but using relatively smaller samples. It is particularly useful in assessing the variability of ore characteristics in early stages of greenfield projects, as well as in predicting the performance of existing grinding circuits. A validation program was carried out in which a good adherence to the original test results was obtained. The results were used for (a) simulation of a copper comminution circuit as a function of the ore characteristics, and (b) evaluation of sampling protocols used for assessing fragmentation characteristics.

"The financial model is an integral component of any project evaluation based on mineral resources, ore reserves and (at least internally) exploration targets. Given the unity of purpose for preparing financial models for project evaluation purposes, the diversity of both format and content of the finalised models is surprising. Many models are prepared by staff or consultants who are comfortable with a particular format that may be used for other purposes, such as budget preparation or financial reporting. It is natural in these situations that the practitioner will take these models and adapt them to the purpose. The end result may or may not succeed in providing a clear, accurate and sufficiently detailed view of the project’s economic viability.When preparing a model, the practitioner should be cognisant of the interpretation and review, or audit, process. The auditor may be a consultant or employee of a bank, potential equity provider or of the project sponsor itself. Depending upon the scale of the project and the level of participation of the entity that the auditor represents, the financial model will be interrogated more or less rigorously. In any event, the end user will require the model to permit easy change of inputs and will wish to confirm that such change is appropriately and thoroughly transmitted throughout.Accordingly, there are some ‘dos and don’ts’ that can be readily applied in the creation of the financial model that will greatly assist the end user, not just in the change of inputs, but also in reviewing the model’s integrity. Study of the distribution of minor elements between copper matte andfayalite slag is important in determining appropriate methods tomaximise the recovery of valuable metals and the rejection of harmfulelements. Boliden Mineral AB operate a large copper smelter in northern Sweden, where they had noted that the loss of silver to the slag in the settling furnace appeared to be a direct function of the tin content of the slag. This work was aimed at determining whether or not this was a cause-and-effect relationship. Copper matte containing approximately 50 wt per cent copper and small amounts of silver and tin was equilibrated with silica-saturated fayalite slag at 1250¦C, then quenched. The matte and slag were then analysed for their silver and tin contents. It was found that there was no relationship between the silver distribution and the tin distribution. The silver matte/slag distribution ratio had a value of 120 ¦ 40 while that for tin was 2.8 ¦ 0.3. It is suggested that the most likely cause of the relationship observed at the Boliden smelter was matte entrainment in the slag.
