Horizontal displacements and ground strains induced by mine subsidence are significant information needed for calculating damage and developing precautions against subsidence effects on surface structures. To devise a simple method for determining the surface horizonal displacements and strains simultaneously with the subsidence prediction, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the significance of the tilt number, which is the proportionality constant in the relationship between the horizontal displacement and the slope of the subsidence profile. The ratio of the tilt number to the critical radius of the subsidence trough is identical to the ratio of the maximum possible horizontal displacement to the full subsidence, which is found to be constant in most European coalfields. If this ratio is known for a particular minesite in the United States, then horizontal displacement and ground strains can be readily obtained from the primary subsidence data.

Prologue Antoine Marc Gaudin (Fig. 1) was truly a giant in the field of mineral processing, and his shadow is still cast long on our profession. "Tony," as his students affectionately called him (but never to his face), came to the United States in 1917 and enrolled at Columbia University where he studied under Professor Arthur F. Taggart. Later, as a lecturer, he wrote his classic comminution paper (Gaudin, 1926). This important work led to his appointment as an associate professor at The University of Utah, where he conducted highly original work on flotation fundamentals that is still widely quoted today (Gaudin et al., 1928-30). In 1929, he was appointed Research Professor of Ore Dressing at the Montana School of Mines in Butte. Shortly thereafter, he published his first book, Flotation (Gaudin, 1932). Because Gaudin could so quickly cut through the fog to get to the essence of a problem, this is still a valuable reference book. It is a valued part of my personal library, and I consult it frequently. Over the next decade, he conducted an outstanding graduate research program at Butte, but, more importantly, he honed his undergraduate lectures and produced the century's outstanding text in the field, Elements of Mineral Dressing (Gaudin, 1939). Future of State and Federal Oil Regulation. BY NORTHCUTT ELY (Trans , vol 118 2400 words) The Interstate Oil Compact, ratified by six states and Congress in 1935, replaced the petroleum code, invalidated with other codes by the Schechter decision This compact endeavors, first, to conserve reservoir energy of oil pools through substantially uniform conservation measures by the states, second, it recognizes the state rather than the Federal Government as possessing the necessary police power for that purpose, third, it establishes an interstate advisory commission, so that orderly production in one state is not penalized by uncontrolled production in another, fourth, Federal interests are recognized in the control of hot oil, regulation of imports and fact-finding forecasts of supply and demand by the Bureau of Mmes It is not as complete an instrument as proposed by the Federal Oil Conservation Board in 1932, but is workable, and will be effective in proportion to the support given it by the industry Three results may follow First, now that fear of Federal control has subsided, the industry may lose interest in the compact and let it fall to pieces, second, if vigorously supported by the industry, the compact can accomplish most of the conservation objectives sought by the Federal control measures now believed unconstitutional, third, if the Compact fails, Federal regulation is almost certain to be revived, and can probably be sustained in connection with neutrality legislation, regulation of interstate pipe lines, and coordination of Federal and state gasoline taxes Nearly every step toward governmental regulation has originated within the industry state proration, the Federal petroleum code, Federal control of imports, Federal control of hot oil are examples The Compact shows a trend toward coordination between the powers of the industry, the state government, and the Federal Government If this arrangement fails through lack of interest by the oil industry, the next step is likely to be absorption by the Federal Government of the other two factors involved in the situation

This is true of both the engineer/constructor team and the mining company team. Then these teams must be carefully related so that they function effectively as one organization on the job. Australia is tightening its rules governing mineral processing and the purchase of rural land by foreign investors" Rural land purchasers in the future will have to demonstrate to the Foreign Investment Review Board, the applicable governing body, that they will introduce new techniques or developments that will benefit Australia. In mineral processing, the criterion will be the availability of maximum opportunities for Australian equity capital. The changes are designed to discourage absentee landlords and speculators from abroad. A diamond field discovered several years ago in the northern section of Western Australia, known as the Kimberley region, is now thought to be one of the largest in the world, according to Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Ltd. (CRA). Figures released late in 1981 by CRA indicate that the main orebody of at least 100 million metric tons contains possibly 500 million carats of diamonds with a conservative market value of $8 billion. The diamond stones in the 100-acre deposit are about 10% gem-quality, 30% near gem, and 60% industrial. Initial production is expected to be about 17 million carats annually, which could be expanded to 25 million carats annually. World production of natural diamonds has been about 40 million carats per year from a reserve base of about 700 million carats.

The grinding media materials for the mining industry require corrosion and abrasion resistance properties not only to minimize the wear but also to improve the flotation recoveries of sulfide minerals. The media wear mechanisms and the factors influencing the grinding ball wear during grinding are discussed with respect to abrasion, corrosion and impact wear of grinding media materials. Interactions between the grinding media and sulfide minerals in a ball mill adversely affect the floatabilities of the ground minerals. The possible galvanic interactions between grinding medium-mineral and their effects on the flotation responses of sulfides are also reviewed. The selection criteria for alloy composition that reduces the overall wear along with adverse effects on flotation are brought out.

The dedicated documenting of blast design and vibration monitoring results forms part of the best practice methodology for today’s blasting operators. This allows regression curves to be constantly updated and in turn compatible charge weight determinations are based upon the most current data. The point can arise however when so much data becomes agglomerated that variations in blast design, geology or monitoring location response and their effects can pass unobserved and start to have an adverse effect on the forecasting capability of the regression due to a deterioration of the standard error statistic. The simple solution would be to only compile like-for-like blasting returns, but this prospect can quickly become unworkable due to the number of potential variables. In addition it is very difficult to spot subtle variations by simply examining a standard scaled-distance curve mainly due to the intrinsic data scatter that is always present together with the logarithmic nature of the regression curve. If indeed a variation is thought to be apparent, how can the degree and magnitude of its influence to be quantified? The Likelihood Ratio Test when applied to regression data can diagnose subtle variations between data sub-sets and provides a comparative statistic as to the degree of variation. By analysing datasets in such a way, levels of compatibility are obtained, indicating which sets can be combined in order to increase prediction capability.

In traditional construction contracting practice, the owner allocated almost all risks to the contractor, saying in effect, "you deal with all construction problems and all third parties, and don't bother me." In this same tradition, the architect or engineer designed a structure in its finished condition, and if he thought about the construction problems that might be involved in building it, he was careful not to express any opinions on these matters in the contract documents. This feudal attitude fostered two results: 1. Contractors added high contingencies to their bids to cover the costs of risks. 2. Litigation of construction contract claims blossomed. Broadly, the owners lost--the courts reallocated many risks the owners thought they had laid on the contractor. Thoughtful owners and engineers recognized that owners were paying for risks twice --once in bid contingencies and a second time in court. Meanwhile, contractors were not getting rich; they were losing money on delays and disputes, and just about getting even (if they were lucky) in court. And construction law was becoming an increasingly lucrative field--for lawyers. Furthermore, with the growing influx of lawyers onto the construction scene, the owner-contractor-engineer relationship became increasingly an adversary one. The emphasis came to be on culpability rather than capability--who could be held responsible for breaching some contract clause, not who might find a solution to some common problem. This game was played with equal vigor by owners and contractors.

Jenks, of Boston, one of the owners of this interesting mine, I am enabled to lay before the Institute a suite of specimens, illustrating its peculiar formation and the paragenesis of mineral species which it presents; and a recent brief visit and rapid reconnoissance of the locality permit me to supplement this exhibition with a general description, based upon personal observation. The mine is situated upon the Culsagee Fork of the Tennessee River, in Macon County, North Carolina, a few miles from Franklin. The most practicable route by which it can at present be visited is by wagon (or preferably on horseback) from Seneca City, S. C., a station on the Charlotte and Atlanta Air Line Railroad. The itinerary is as follows: to Walhalla,* nine miles; Walhalla to Highlands, twenty-nine miles; Highlands to the Culsagee, fourteen miles. By passing the night at or near Highlands, the mine can be reached and examined and the return to Highlands made on the second day; and the round trip, if performed in the saddle, can be completed in three days from Seneca City. It is not easy, with due regard to steed and rider, to do it in less time. The rough and precipitous mountain roads do not permit rapid travel ; and the journey is at best a fatiguing one. But its slight hardships are overpaid by the stimulating effect of the climate and the great beauty of the scenery, both of which are destined to become more widely known than at present, to seekers for health and pleasure. Indeed the town of Highlands, already named, is almost entirely made up of northern immigrants, attracted by these advantages and by the inducement of cheap land for agriculture and stock-raising. The Culsagee or Sugartown fork of the Tennessee traverses the belt of ancient crystalline schists on the west flank of the Blue Ridge. This belt abounds in valuable minerals. Among those of the nonmetallic class may be mentioned graphite, soapstone, serpentine, ashes- * A branch or cross railroad is in operation as far as Walhalla ; but the single daily train runs at an hour not convenient for this expedition ; and Seneca City is probably the best starting-point. At all events, I obtained there an excellent mount for the trip.

"Experiments were carried out to determine the long-term effect of instillation of 500 mg of generic bituminous, anthracite, quartz, or titanium dioxide (Ti02) dust on the composition of pulmonary surfactant. Dust was instilled in the caudal lobe of the right lungs of female pigtailed macaque monkeys (Macaca nemestrina). The composition of surfactant isolated from cell-free bronchoalveolar lavage (CF-BAL) samples obtained from right lungs (dust exposed) at various times over the following year was compared with that of surfactant isolated from CF-BAL from left lungs (dust free) . Little change was seen in the amount of surfactant-associated lipid phosphorus as a result of exposure to dust. Exposure to quartz, anthracite, or Ti02 dust induced a significant increase in the total amount of protein in the surfactant-enriched fraction. The relative amount of specific proteins was also altered: surfactant-associated protein A decreased, and the amount of the heavy and light chains of immunoglobulin molecules (identified by NHiterminal amino acid sequence analysis) increased. These changes were visible more than a year after instillation of quartz and at least 3 months after instillation of anthracite dust. Despite variation in the responses of the individual animals, the changes observed might serve as an indicator of the severity of the effect of exposure of the lung to mineral dust and/or to pathogens. IntroductionSurfactant is essential for normal pulmonary function and gas exchange. It functions to reduce surface tension and may help to prevent pulmonary edema [19] and to protect against infection [13]. The importance of surfactant to normal Jung function is illustrated by the fact that neonates lacking appropriate surfactant undergo respiratory distress and do not survive without clinical support."

INTRODUCTION - SCOPE OF DISCUSSION There has hitherto been no systematic effort to make public the available information on petroleum in South America and the object of this paper, therefore, is to broadly discuss the subject as it pertains to South America as a whole, endeavoring to collect in readable form what is known regarding individual fields. This article is not intended to exhaustively discuss individual fields, or to solve the many complicated problems regarding petroleum and natural. gas in the various republics, since those necessitate years of study and work by petroleum geologists, engineers, financiers, and drillers. Neither. can the reader expect absolute accuracy in all statements, since this is impossible at the present time. The writer has, of course, attempted to be correct in all cases, but in a review involving so many countries and extending over so many, phases of the subject, it is to be expected that some errors will have crept in.

Monodisperse micron size nickel oxalate particles with rhombohedron morphology were prepared from condensed Ni(OH)2 suspension by a novel gel-sol process proposed by one of the authors. Firstly, condensed nickel hydroxide gel was formed by fast adding 1 mol dm-3 NaOH solution into 0.2 mol dm-3 nickel chloride solution, and then oxalic acid solution with a concentration of 0.25 mol dm-3 was dropped into the gel drop wise through a pump equiped with a pH controller under preset pH value, and in this process, Ni(OH)2 gel was converted gradually into monodisperse nickel oxalate sol. The formation of the nickel oxalate particles was found to proceed through a dissolution-recrystallization mechanism from the nickel hydroxide gel. The product particles exhibited rhombohedron like shape with micron size long axis and sub-micron size short axis. The effects of such factors, as temperature, surfactants, et al, were evaluated experimentally on the particles sizes and morphologies.

This paper discusses the geotechnical condition of bedding shears and small- and large-scale faults and shears in Archean banded iron formation (BIF) bedrock, based on observations of core and televiewer images. Information that can be collected includes the orientation of defects, infill thickness, strength and material type, defect shape and surface roughness.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may be critical to slope design where performance is structurally controlled with bedding dipping out of a wall. The intensity of development of the bedding shear is a useful indicator of the amount of shearing a bedding surface has been subjected to. This can allow for engineering judgement to be used in adopting peak or residual shear strengths along defect surfaces when developing the design.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may also contribute to the blockiness and degradation of a rock mass where the structural orientation is otherwise favourable. Additionally the condition, thickness and strength of infill of major fault structures can affect slope design and performance, depending on orientation.Comparison of the condition of structures observed in core with the corresponding in situ televiewer image has been made to assess what characteristics are most accurately captured by each technique and whether the additional information gathered from using the televiewer technique is justified by the cost. The question of whether the data collected by a televiewer is sufficient to ultimately replace the need for core is considered.CITATION:Baxter, H and Eggers, M, 2013. For many decades control strategies have been based upon samples taken from liquid steel, molten slag and gas phase as well as from solid products. Because of recent developments in the areas of dynamic control models, artificial intelligence and expert systems, there is an increasing incentive to develop diagnostic sensors, which permit in-situ rapid determinations of concentrations of various elements in molten steel. In this paper, an overview is given on recent developments in the areas of sensors for use in ferroalloy and steel production. Particular emphasis will be given on (i) innovative application of sensors for on-line determinations of dissolved elements, Si, P, N, H and Cr in molten iron and ferroalloys, (ii) evaluation of inclusions in liquid metal and (iii) rapid determinations of slag compositions.

"The Kittilä underground mine in northern Finland is extracting one of the largest known gold deposits in Europe. Kittilä achieved commercial production on May 1, 2009, becoming Agnico Eagle’s first mine to open outside of Canada. The Kittilä orebodies were initially mined from two openpits – Suuri and Roura – and underground operations were added in October 2010. The pits were mined out in November 2012, so mining is now entirely underground in the Suuri and Roura deposits. Additional, small openpits will mine any remaining near-surface reserves in the future.The Kittilä Mine is located in the Lapland region of northern Finland, approximately 900 km (560 miles) north of Helsinki and 150 km (93 miles) north of the Arctic Circle. With a mine life estimated through 2034, Kittilä is Agnico’s longest-life mine.The mine’s proven and probable reserves contain 32 Mt (4.7 million oz) at 4.6 g/t (0.13 oz/ st) gold. Ore has been mined from underground since 2010. The original 3 kt/d (3,300 stpd) operation underwent an expansion project to increase the throughput capacity of the mill by 1 kt/d (1,100 stpd), starting by the end of 2014.The region around the Kittilä Mine is underlain by mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Kittilä Greenstone Belt oriented nearly vertical. This greenstone belt is similar to those hosting Agnico Eagle’s Canadian deposits in Quebec’s Abitibi region and Nunavut. At the contact point between ironrich and magnesium-rich rocks lies a 100- to 200- m (330- to 660-ft) thick structural zone known as the Suurikuusikko Trend. This trend hosts the Kittilä deposit, where multiple mineralized zones have been traced over a strike length of more than 25 km (15 miles).Most of Agnico Eagle’s work has focused on a 4.5-km (2-mile) segment of the Suurikuusikko Trend that hosts the five main zones of the known gold reserves and resources. From south to north they are: Ketola, Etela, Suuri, Roura and Rimpi.The ore at the Kittilä Mine is refractory, making gold extraction relatively difficult because the gold is generally locked inside the two main sulfide minerals – arsenopyrite and arsenic-rich pyrite. Only about 4 percent is very fine-grained “free gold” (not locked in sulfide grains) and easier to extract. Most of this free gold is found in the outer, oxidized or eroded sections of the ore."

The yield and fracture behavior of recrystallized chromiztm have been studied in order to gain an understanding of the recrystallization embrittlement-rheotropic recovery phenomenon. The duc tile-brittle tensile transition temperature of recrystallized chromium was found to vary from 225 ° to -80°C as the ratio of specimen diameter/mean planar grain size decreased. The applicability of this observation to other bcc metals is briefly discussed. Brittle fracture in recrystallized chromium was found to be initiated predominately from intercrystalline rupture nuclei. Single crystals exhibit a high degree of ductility at 23 "C. The experimental data indicate that grain boundaries play a significant part in the yield and fracture behavim. Pres training significantly reduces the transition temperature, and high temperature aging does not result in re-embrittle-ment until complete recovery or re crystallization occurs. SEVERAL theories have been used to explain the recrystallization embrittlement-rheotropic recovery phenomenon in chromium. Wain, Henderson, and ohnstone' propose a Cottrell dislocation locking mechanism due to nitrogen, and Weaver and Gross and weaver 3 propose a strain-induced precipitation mechanism involving a chromium nitride precipitate. The researches of many investigators seem to leave little doubt that brittleness in chromium is promoted by interstitial impurities. Smith and seybolt4 have shown that the ductile-brittle transition temperature is lowered as the interstitial content is reduced. weaver3 provides evidence for a 150°C reduction in the tensile transition temperature as the nitrogen content is reduced from 20 to 5 ppm. Maykuth and affee' have suggested that the amount and orientation of grain boundary impurities may be responsible for the brittle nature of recrystallized chromium. This suggestion was based on their findings that wrought iodide chromium possessing a fiberous grain structure is ductile in tension at room temperature while a recrystallized grain structure is completely brittle. Previous investigations have not studied this phenomenon sufficiently to determine its cause. Perhaps this has been largely due to previous experimental findings that brittle fracture observed in chromium has been almost entirely transgranular.' In addition McNeil and imb,' who investigated coarse-grained as-cast chromium, describe the point of initiation of fracture as cleavage, close to the (100) plane, near or at grain bound-daries, or at included particles or voids. However, Hook, Adair, and ipsitt found that fracture in coarse-grained recrystallized chromium is initiated by intergranular rupture and then propagates nearly entirely by cleavage. This result, together with their finding that room temperature ductility in bending is observed for single crystals and coarse-grained polycrystalline specimens for which the number of grains through the specimen diameter is small, suggests that grain boundaries may play an important role in the brittle behavior of chromium. The recrystallization embrittlement problem can be resolved into two questions. These are, whether the controlling mechanism is predominately one of crack initiation or crack propagation, and whether brittle fracture is initiated predominately by slip or twin induced intergranular rupture or by cleavage. The following research was designed to study the role of grain boundaries on the brittle fracture of chromium in an effort to resolve these questions.
