There are several methods described in the literature for the determination of the order and the rate constant for the flotation of minerals. These often involve some type of computational or graphical procedures. A relatively simpler method developed on the basis of a technique used by Chang" in chemical kinetics is described in this paper. Chang's technique, like most others in chemical kinetics," is based on the law of mass action which states that the rate of a chemical reaction is proportional to the active masses of the reacting substances at any given time. Application of this law to the flotation of minerals would involve the adaptation of the terms "flotation" for "chemical reaction" and "floatable amount of the minerals" for "the active masses of the chemical reactants." There are indeed a large number of physical processes controlling the actual flotation rate. The most inefficient one of these could be considered equivalent to the slowest reaction in a series of chemical reactions. If variables such as aeration rate and agitation are kept at constant levels, the rate of flotation under free flotation conditions (i.e., conditions under which the suspension is dilute) will be given by the following equation: where C is the concentration of the floatable minerals in the pulp at any given time t, K is the rate constant, and n is the order of the reaction. If we represent the floated fraction of the floatable mineral at time t as m (0 m - 1) and C at t = 0 as Ca, integration of Eq. 1 yields

CRYSTALLIZATION from aqueous solution is a simple and old method for the recovery of metal values from leach solution. Practically all the methods for the recovery of aluminum from clay are based on the crystallization of an aluminum salt from the leach solution. Differences in solubilities may be used to advantage for separating two metals from the same leach solution. The classical method of Marignac (1866), which makes use of the difference in solubilities of K2TaF7 and K2NbOF5 to separate niobium from tantalum, has been used successfully in the manufacture of these metals (Fig. 10-1). The slurry containing the metal oxides is dissolved in 70 % hydrofluoric acid, diluted, and heated near boiling. A potassium salt is added in sufficient quantity to form the complex fluorides of the niobium and tantalum present. The solution is filtered and allowed to cool. At room temperature most of the tantalum salt crystallizes out while the niobium remains in solution.

Stresses induced by block-caving mining were estimated from in-place measurements of strain or deformation in rock and concrete around mine openings. The four types of gages used for measurements in the Climax Molybdenum mine during 1959-61 were Whittemore gage, Carlson strain meter,2 Valore strain cell, and Climax extensometer. Gage performance in the laboratory was evaluated by stressing instrumented rock and concrete specimens in a universal testing machine and by comparing measurements taken by the gages and a standard gage. Gage performance in the mine was evaluated by comparing measurements taken during an 18-month test. The Whittemore gage, Carlson strain meter, and the Climax extensometer proved suitable for the investigation; the Valore strain cell, effective in the laboratory tests, gave erratic measurements in the mine.

INTRODUCTION DURING the years 1942-1944, about 125 New England deposits were mined for sheet and punch mica, and many others were briefly prospected. During this period the Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior, carried on detailed studies of the deposits and the pegmatite bodies that contain them. The primary purpose of the studies was to provide geological information that would contribute toward efficient mine development and operation. The studies were aimed directly at practical production problems. Detailed maps showing the structure of the deposits were prepared, and geological findings were closely correlated with data on specific yields and costs of mining and processing. The result is information that permits a reasonably accurate appraisal of the mica deposits of New England and the mining industry that they support. At a time when the future of the industry is in doubt, it seems desirable to submit this appraisal for consideration. Domestic mica deposits supply only a small fraction of the country's needs in normal times, for only the richest domestic deposits can compete with the low-cost mines of India and Brazil. However, the possibility that this country may be cut off from its supplies in time of war gives domestic deposits an importance much greater than their peacetime production would imply. New England supplied about 22 per cent of domestic output in 1943 and 1944, the peak years of wartime production. Its actual contribution to the war effort was greater, for the proportion of sheet mica of high quality in the New England product is higher than the average for domestic mica. The data analyzed below were collected for the Geological Survey by D. M. Larrabee, A. H. McNair, J. J. Page, V. E. Shainin, G. W. Stewart, and the co-authors of this paper. ANALYSIS OF WARTIME OPERATIONS In considering the data presented in this report, it must be remembered that the scale of mica operations is very small compared with that of many other mining industries. The typical New England mica mine of 1943 and 1944 was worked by a crew of five or six men. Equipment was varied but on the whole extremely simple. The first stage of operation at a deposit was normally opencut mining. Drilling was done mostly with jackhammers powered by portable compressors driven by gasoline engines. Muck was shoveled by hand into buckets with a capacity of 1/3 to 2/3 ton and commonly hoisted by derrick to a dump adjacent to the cut. As operations were carried to greater depth, and the transition to underground mining was made, these methods were modified to a degree depending largely on the attitude of the deposit mined. The investigation described in this report is part of a survey by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the titanium resources of the United States. The purpose of this project was to study a typical coastal deposit of beach sands in the Middle Atlantic States, particularly in the area surrounding the Delmarva Peninsula. The field investigation consisted of a reconnaissance survey of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, followed by surface sampling and drilling of the sands on Assateague Island, off the Atlantic coast of Maryland. The study covered the period January-December 1957. Detailed analyses were made of 5-foot sections of eight drill holes along the Maryland section of the island. The heavy-mineral fraction of these samples was separated by sink-float tests, using acetylene bromide as the heavy liquid. The minerals comprising the heavy fraction were examined microscopically, and mineral counts were made on selected samples.

Many factors enter into the manufacture of basic open-hearth steel of high quality. Perhaps the two most important are temperature and the iron oxide content of the metal. If we can control these two factors we can essentially control basic open-hearth practice. SOURCE AND EFFECT OF IRON OXIDE Earlier investigators, especially Herty and his associates, have shown that iron oxide is introduced into the open-hearth furnace in four ways:' 1. By oxidation of the scrap by furnace gases. 2. By decomposition of the limestone. 3. By oxidation of the iron oxide in the slag by furnace gases. 4. By direct addition of iron ore to the charge. We also know that the speed of operation of an open-hearth furnace depends, for a given charge and given combustion conditions, on the rate at which iron oxide will diffuse from the slag into the metal. The rate of diffusion depends upon a number of variables, such as iron oxide content of the slag, slag viscosity, etc., which also depend upon the amount of iron oxide in the metal, amount of carbon present, temperature, and so forth. For a given carbon and a given temperature, the iron oxide content of the metal is in proportion to the iron oxide content of the slag. This fact can be easily verified by analysis of slag samples taken as described by Herty.2 It is preferable to take these samples just before deoxidetion. In killing the steel samples with aluminum it is desirable to use aluminum rod of 99 per cent purity; ordinary commercial aluminum rod with a purity of approximately 92 per cent is not satisfactory. In drilling these samples it is also essential to take the largest amount of drillings possible. This gives more accurate results because it eliminates spotty segregation of A12O3.

"Mining has the reputation of being a very ""macho"" industry. Recently, wider educational opportunities for women in nontraditional occupations and changes in mine technology have combined to make mining a viable career choice for women also. To benefit from this new resource, the mining industry faces the challenge of developing a different work environment from the one now burdened with sexism. Management supported initiatives are needed to facilitate such a transformation. The same rethinking of gender attitudes might also be extended to mining women in their traditional role as ""wife of"". The assumption that the male worker's wife is an unpaid adjunct is being questioned. It is suggested that women's separate concerns both as helpmate and as part of the mining workforce should be considered when planning for mining into the 21st century.IntroductionI must confess that, during the preparation of this paper, there have been many moments when I questioned my temerity. After all, I am not male, I am not an engineer, and I have never had a position in mine management. But as the wife of a mining engineer and a long-time resident of Northern Ontario mining towns, I do have an interest in the mining industry. This interest has had little to do with the technical and management aspects of the industry. Instead my research has been concerned with the impact the mining industry has on the people involved, particularly women, whether directly as employees or indirectly as wives. As I look toward the 21st century, I believe that the whole question of gender relations in the mining industry is one of the critical management issues smouldering below the surface."

The growth of nitrogen-austenite during nitriding of large-gvained ferrite between 650" and 800°C has been studied as a functimz oJ time and nitrogen potential of the atmosphere for a variety of alloying elements dissolved in the ferrite. Whereas no preferential grain boundary penetration by aistenite takes place in zone-refined iron, the addition of aboit I zot pct oj' V, Ti, Cr. Si, or A1 produces significant protrusion of austenite down former 0-0 boundaries. This group of elernents also produces ragged y-0 interfaces in the a grains which advance more slozuly than those in zone-refined iron. 1 zut pct of Ni, Co, Mn, or Mo dissolved in ferrite leads to essentially smooth 7-a interfaces, which advance at rates very sinzilar to those in zone-refined iron. The reasons for this effect are not clear. Two possible limiting hypotheses, not necessarily exclusive, are discussed. One involves p.referentia1 grain bozindary diffusion of nitrogen. the other the production of a zone of ferrite, stpersatcirated with respect to nitrogen, from which austenite precipitates helerogeneozisly on the a-a gyain boundaries. In many phase transformations which occur by nu-cleation and diffusion-controlled growth, information on the parameters which control the rates of nuclea-tion and of growth is frequently not quantititative. The present work describes a continuation of efforts to obtain quantitative data on growth rates in systems where thermodynamic and kinetic factors are known independently, and thus where comparison with models of the growth process is possible. The work has been conducted on iron-base systems for two reasons. Firstly, there are several interesting transformations in this system, many of which are of practical importance. Secondly, the information on phase diagrams, activities, and diffusion coefficients is more complete in this system than in any other. These data are still inadequate to check all the effects of alloying elements, but at worst it is possible to make estimates and thus examine order-of-magni-tude agreement with proposed models. It will be necessary to do this in the present work. The problem studied was the growth of nitrogen-austenite in from the surface of large-grained columnar crystals of alloyed ferrite exposed to an NHs/Hz atmosphere. Earlier work by Grozier et al.' had suggested that growth of austenite may occur preferentially along grain boundaries of alloyed ferrite, whereas zone-refined (ZR) iron shows no such effect, Fig. 1. B. S. Crocker (Screened Ore Used for Fine Grinding at Lake Shore Mines, P. 499) was born in Toronto, Ont. and attended Saint Andrews College and University of Toronto. He received a B.A. and M.A. degree. He was graduated with honors and received a fellowship in metallurgy. Mr. Crocker did post-graduate research at University of Toronto from 1933 to 1934. He was employed by Beattie Gold Mines in 1933. He did research in milling at Lake Shore Mines from 1934 to 1936 and from 1936 to 1940 was head of experiment laboratory. At the present time he is mill superintendent with Lake Shore Mines at Kirkland Lake, Ont., Canada. Grinding, cyanidation, flotation and roasting are of special interest to him. He is a member of AIME. Mr. Crocker has presented several papers before C.I.M.M. and also holds membership in this society as well as Professional Engineers of Ontario. Skiing, yacht racing and photography are his favorite hobbies.

Equations for predicting the performance of vacuum filters and centrifuges used for coal dewatering are presented. These equations are the basis for a dewatering module which has recently been added to the Coal Preparation Plant Simulator developed at the University of Pittsburgh under the sponsorship of the Department of Energy. The module provides for mechanical degradation in the centrifuge; loss of fines to centrate or filtrate; changes in size and gravity distribution; changes in ash and sulfur content; as well as final moisture content of the dewatered product. Inputs to the module are the flow rate of the coal to be dewatered, a washability analysis of the coal, and parameters describing the operation of the vacuum filter or centrifuge. Typical results obtained using the module are presented. There are adjustable parameters which can be varied to match plant operation or experimental data if desired.

"The smelter at Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations, located in Sudbury, Ontario, operates a single electric AC furnace. This furnace treats nickel sulphide concentrates produced by Glencore and third-party feeds and as such its performance is key to the company’s nickel supply chain. Currently the plant has two shutdowns per year in order to carry out significant repairs on matte tap-holes.Improved monitoring systems that enable better prediction of tap-hole wear have been a continued focus. The electric furnace is an essential piece of the smelter flow sheet requiring the need for planned tap-hole maintenance along with robust systems for management according to to this plan.The ability to meet our goal of zero harm is ensuring that safe practices are in place. Detailed procedures and cool-down practices have been implemented to ensure that required matte chemistry and temperature criteria can be met during the period leading into a shutdown for tapblock maintenance.A significant repair of the electric furnace will take place in 2015. During this rebuild, the sidewalls and matte endwall will be replaced. There is work underway to improve wall and matte end performance in an attempt to extend the time between rebuilds. This paper will review the approach taken towards this end."

Accumulative roll bonding (ARB) is a severe plastic deformation process for achieving ultrafine grains in metallic sheets without changing the sample dimensions. In this study, ARB process was carried out on 5083 aluminum alloy sheets up to 6 cycles. In this process, the surfaces of the strips to be joined are roughened and cleaned and then stacked. After stacking, the specimen is roll-bonded by rolling using a 50% reduction. The rolled specimen is cut into two halves, and the above-mentioned procedure is repeated for several times. Microstructural characterizations were analyzed by transmition electron microscopy (TEM). Tension and Vickers hardness tests were performed on produced sheets for evaluating their mechanical properties. In order to clarify the failure mode, fracture surfaces after tensile tests were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated that at the early stages of ARB process, grains were subdivided by deformation induced boundaries. After several ARB cycles, lamellar structure elongated in the rolling direction contains lamellar boundaries was formed. With increasing the strain, mean spacing of lamellar boundaries decreased. Finally, continuous recrystallization resulted in a microstructure covered with small recrystallized grains with an average diameter below 100 nm at the end of four cycle. The tensile strength and hardness of the 6 cycle ARB processed 5083 aluminum alloy sheet increased about two and three times of the initial values, respectively. Results indicated conformity between mechanical evolutions and microstructural changes during ARB process. Fracture surfaces observations showed that failure mode in ARB processed aluminum is shear ductile rupture with elongated small dimples.

"In the last decade Afitex developed the Draintube™ geocomposite, which provides simultaneous drainage and waterproofing functions. This new type of drain tubes planar geocomposites (DTPG) differs from other geocomposites as the drainage core is composed of multiple corrugated and perforated pipes instead of biaxial or triaxial nets. It is furthermore associated with needle-punch stitched layers of non-woven geotextiles, which act either as capillary mediums or as filters.In this paper, the structure of the Draintube™ drainage composite is presented along with its key properties and the drainage mechanism associated with its particular structure.The relevance of this kind of structure is then reviewed based on past and current laboratory bench evaluations and field installations for mining applications such as the covering of acid rock drainage (ARD) tailings for the Central Manitoba Mine (Canada) site-rehabilitation; and as a pregnant solution collection layer in heap leach pads.Some of the demonstrated critical advantages of Draintube™ in the mining industry are as follows: reduction of the thickness, hence lower volume of granular drain layers improvement of fluid and gas collection and reduction of the hydraulic load reduction of secondary collector network mechanical protection of the sealing membrane fast and economical installation of interlifts stability under extreme conditions (compression, temperature, pH) increased stability of entire covering system and reinforcement of protection of dykes filtration of the covered material customised drainage positive connection of the geocomposite to collector pipes enable leaks detection (using a conductive textile layer) with an electrical test.CITATION:Saunier, P, Ameglio, L and Durkheim, Y, 2015. The 250 metric tonnes of gold and 360 000 metric tonnes of copper recovered from the Mt Morgan Mine in Central Queensland justify its fame. The mine ceased operation before the advent of three-dimensional computer graphical modelling of orebodies became common practice in mine planning. The Mount Morgan Mine records however remain and are the database for this study. The Mount Morgan project takes ore deposit modelling one step further by examining the relationship between grade distribution within the orebody and key geological features, as a tool for exploration and development.The Mount Morgan gold and copper mineralisation is shown to be strongly lognormally distributed. The deposit has been split into three areas, using geological boundaries, each with different geostatistical characteristics. Important features include: the spatial relationship of near-vertical, high grade shoots with a ring dyke thought to be related to the North Dyke; separation of the high grade eastern stopes from the others along the Andesite Dyke; and lack of concentrated mineralisation along the Slide Fault.Recognition of these features is useful to those currently exploring the Mount Morgan district for similar style deposits, by stressing the importance, or lack thereof, of the geological features.

At Newmont’s Jundee Operation, exploration and resource geologists collaborated to produce an open pit resource model. Using a variety of modelling and estimation techniques but no new data, an uneconomic underground target was converted into a potentially economic open pit evaluation. During an industry downturn, it is more important than ever to efficiently share expertise, ideas and resources to problem solve and produce meaningful project outcomes. The two departments brought together different methods and ideas, and the process showed that certain methods worked better than others in different situations, thus the appropriate method was applied to each part of the evaluation. The results were used to create new procedures and improved lithology modelling and resource model estimations. Adaptability of the geology departments and collaboration such as this are key to ongoing improvements and future mine life at Jundee.CITATION:Dudgeon, K, Paradis, J and Topping, M, 2014. Micropiles are employed to retrofit existing foundations, including underpinning prior to future construction operations and resupport of existing structures that have experienced distortion and settlement. This paper presents analyses of the two case histories requiring the use of micropiles in these applications. The first case history involves micropiles used to resupport a settled pump station next to an excavation which had suffered basal failure and ground loss. A compression load test pile experienced plunging failure which, after analysis of the strain-gauge data acquired during the test, was attributable to a greater degree of disturbance to the subsoils beneath the site than anticipated. After construction of the micropiles around the pump chamber a synchronized jacking system was used to lift and right the 320 kip chamber structure, followed by resupporting it on the newly constructed piles. The second case history entails the use of micropiles for direct underpinning support of existing columns prior to a utility tunnel installation within an existing high-bay warehouse structure. The design constraint that most significantly affected the successful completion of this project was the desire to bond the new piles into the existing reinforced concrete foundations. As a result of the coring method through the footing, the ultimate bond stress measured during a pullout test was more than twice that assumed in the design. Monitoring of the underpinned columns during trench excavation indicated that the system performance was acceptable. These case histories reinforce the concept that lower capacity micropiles can provide a rapid means to underpin and retrofit existing structures.

Determine whether the total delay time in blasting may be safely increased beyond the currently permitted 0.5 s, without igniting a methane or methane-coal dust atmosphere and determine the minimum borehole spacing to avoid misfires. Approach At present, regulations limit the delay time used in short-delay blasting to a total of 0.5 s. Many in industry and government would like to see this total delay time increased to 1 5 to permit an increase in the number of different delays available for short delay blasting and an increase in the time between delay periods. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine whether the total elapsed delay time for blasting coal in underground mines could be safely expanded, with resulting improvements in productivity. The research was conducted at a surface mine in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Experimental shots were conducted in several pits, each of which had a 5-foot-high coal seam (Pitts-burg No.8) in a 50-foot highwall. The coal seam and a mobile gallery provided a good simulation of an underground coal face. The Bureau also examined the relationship between borehole spacing and misfires, to check on reports over the past few years that permissible explosives frequently misfire. These reports were not well documented, but were numerous enough to warrant investigation. Misfires of permissible explosives in an underground coal mine can be very hazardous; a burning cartridge of explosive may be ejected from a borehole and ignite the gas or dust in the mine, or a misfired cartridge in the muck pile may detonate during drilling and mucking operations, causing serious injuries.

At a mine in central PA, high horizontal stresses have caused long running roof falls resulting in hazardous conditions for the miners and the premature abandonment of panels. Because of these conditions, the mine requested assistance of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in utilizing the 'advance and relieve method to mitigate the affects of horizontal stress on the mine roof. "Advance and relieve" mining involves the removal of a pillar or a portion of a pillar during development, thereby creating a cave along one side of the panel. Following cave development, the horizontal stress is relieved over the workings adjacent to the cave in the active panel. The mine has used this system in three panels with a significant reduction in stress damage and no large roof falls.

Western Mining Corporation has grown from a small gold exploration and mining company, funded by large established mining companies, into a large multi-commodity and multi-national mining company with shareholders who no longer have the same understanding of mining as the founders. Ore reserve calculation methods and reporting procedures have gradually changed throughout the group during this growth. These changes have been led by the newer mines, in particular the Kambalda nickel mines, where the need for more global, less conservative reserves were required to justify capital and forward sales contracts and to inform shareholders of the true worth of their company. This change in attitude to reserves has flowed back to the gold mines and has allowed a better informed management and investing public to plan for the future. Management of the calculation of reserves remains the responsibility of individual mining operations, but a corporate reporting and management structure exists through the office of the Director of Exploration and divisional chief geologists who strive to maintain standards of calculation and reporting. Specialist ore reserve geologists are starting to justify their place in the organisation, particularly at the larger operations. Reporting to the new AusIMM Standards is fully supported, although the amount of supplementary information requested will need to be considered carefully because of the large number of factors that make up even the simplest reserve.
