This paper presents a short history of the production of mineral-energy fuels and energy from waterpower in the United States, with brief discussions of the utilization of each of the fuels and hydropower, and a look at fuels competition and interchangeability. Basic data, in figures and tables, are brought together in this publication for the production of coal in the United States from 1800 to 1960, for crude petroleum, natural gas liquids, and natural gas from 1859 to 1960, and for hydropower since 1900. Production for each segment of the fuels complex in the principal producing States from 1946 to 1960 is shown. Data are not included for consumption as such or for imports and exports.

THE diamond drill is a very important tool in exploration and development testing and its use is increasing. In almost all cases results of diamond drilling are analyzed on the basis of grade and tons. A proper evaluation of core and sludge assays is important if drilling results are to be acceptable as a basis for geologic and engineering appraisal. The relatively wide variation in assay averages as calculated by various well-known combining methods indicates that the engineering choice of a method may affect the outcome of the drilling in terms of ore and waste. The problem of combining assay results from core and sludge samples has been discussed many times in conference and in the literature.'-' Most writers agree that the field of disagreement in methods is large and that the engineer on the job must consider features unique to his drilling, pick one of several combining methods, and depart from the rules when abnormal results come in. All the discussion to date can be summed up by the admission that as yet there is no fairly simple, generally acceptable combining method that is practicable over a wide range of drilling conditions, ground conditions, and ore occurrence. The combining problem is important in evaluating drilling results at Chuquicamata. Recently a reappraisal has been made of recovery variables and their effect on assays, with the result that a new combining method is offered which fits average drilling conditions and is mathematically reasonable. It is simple in application, fundamentally correct, and an improvement over most combining methods. At Chuquicamata diamond drillholes are used to outline the grade and position of blocks of normal and marginal grade oxide, mixed, and sulphide ore. Most holes penetrate all classes of material (and waste), and it is important for mining programs as well as ore reserves to know almost precisely the soluble and insoluble copper content of mineralized ground. At present three classes of ore are mined and treated differently. For an orderly sequence of mining operations which can provide regular daily tonnages of all three ore types and keep grade at certain levels with minimum variation, ore type and its grade must be predicted. Diamond drilling plus geologic mapping and bench sampling are tools for prediction. And drilling data are largely used to calculate grade of material more than a few meters away from bench faces. The orebody at Chuquicamata" is criss-crossed by millions of barren or mineralized weak to fairly strong slips and fault fissures. Mineralization is diverse and encompasses many quartz and oxide or sulphide-bearing copper veins, as well as seams and disseminated grains. Copper occurs in oxide or sulphide minerals or mixtures of these two mineral types. Rock conditions vary from intensely seri-citized (soft and porous) through clay-altered ground to almost fresh granodiorite. The result is an orebody which offers many obstacles to good and consistent core recovery in diamond drilling. Recovery varies considerably in the several alteration zones, the various types of oxide and sulphide ores, and the position and inclination of the drillhole within the complex fracture pattern. As core recovery drops sludge samples must be used with core samples to calculate grade. Many years of drilling at Chuquicamata indicate that in good grade oxide zones and in the sulphide areas core recovery is good and the ground uniformly mineralized. Moderate loss of core, therefore, does not markedly affect grade calculations based on core assays. An early core-sludge combining method used core assays at face value as indicating grade down to 50 pct core recovery, but below this recovery percentage sludge samples were used and weighted according to the standard Longyear chart. This method apparently did not introduce serious errors, but it abruptly used sludge assays with high weighting factors representing 100 pct return irrespective of actual percentage of sludge recovered. Recent drilling activities have been directed toward outlining the marginal ore areas. The non-uniform mineralization and generally poorer core recovery in such ground indicated that a more exact core-sludge combining method was required to equate wide differences between core and sludge assays and recovery. In fringe ore areas at Chuquicamata core recovery averages about 50 pct, from a minimum of 10 to 15 pct to a maximum of 100 pct. Sludge recovery is likewise variable and averages perhaps 80 pct even though holes are cemented as water return falls off. In a homogeneously mineralized area cut by many slips and faults, with hard and soft ribs, loss of core is loss of ground which has a grade similar to that of core recovered, and core assays approximate true grade. In this case sludge samples need not be used. However, it would be unusual to know beforehand that an area is uniformly mineralized, and in fact this condition is probably uncommon. Generally the distribution of valuable minerals in the ground does not exactly compare with their recoverability in core. Thus, in the usual case, loss of core decreases the

THE term Boulder batholith was first applied in 1897 by W. H. Weed'2 to the extensive mass of granite in western Montana within whose borders occur the ore, deposits of Butte. In a general, way this was known to extend from Helena on the north to the Highland Mountains near Butte on the south, and to be relatively narrow in its east-west diameter. Its intrusive relations to the surrounding sedimentary , rocks, and its probable Tertiary age, were described by Weed, but in many ways his statements, based upon incomplete data, have required revision. Most notable of the errors of this description of the batholith were the failure,3 since corrected, to recognize the intrusive contact of the granite with the capping of andesite, and the complete absence of any reference to the many extensions of the granite beyond the somewhat narrow limits of its largest exposure.

The coal industry had another prosperous year in 1966. Since the turn of the decade, production has been climbing at an average rate of 6% per annum. Although the fast pace slackened somewhat, 1966 production showed a gain of almost 3 % over that of 1965. An impressive record can be drawn from the fact that output per man-day in 1966 was more than twice that of the early 1950's, and more than three times that of the early 1940's. And even though man-power requirements lessened, those men retained by the industry worked longer hours and benefited through higher hourly pay rates. However, cost to the customer increased a little. Such statements can only be made for a healthy industry -one that is constantly improving its efficiency. Coal currently provides more than 25% of the total U.S. energy output. About 50% of all U.S.- mined bituminous coal goes directly to the electric utility market. It should be noted that, now, well over one trillion kwh of electricity is generated annually. Dependence of the giant electric utility industry on coal is based on economy and an abundant, dependable supply of this fuel.

The emergence of electronic detonators for use in production mine blasting has enabled mining professionals to rethink the traditional blast design methodologies that pertain to timing. In many ways, electronic detonators can allow great advances in productivity, cost effectiveness, fragmentation, and safety. This paper reports on an independent study quantifying the accuracy of two electronic and two non-electric systems in which 674 detonators were tested. This research aimed to determine the accuracy of commercially available electronic detonators as compared to non-electric shocktube systems. Each system was tested over the viable ranges of delays available. Statistical models were then applied to quantify the scatter present in each system. Suggestions for the use of electronic detonators are made from the findings of this work. This work was made possible through funding from the United States Department of the Interior Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.

In a letter to Prof. L. P. Breckenridge, chairman, urging the continua-tion of the Fuel Conservation Committee of the Engineering Council, Edwin Ludlow calls attention to the millions of tons of culm in the an-thracite region that can be utilized in properly equipped plants and the electricity generated transmitted to. New York, Philadelphia, and other nearby cities. He says: "Experiments have shown the economic value of No. 4 Buckwheat, which passes through a 1/16-in. mesh and over a 1/32-in. mesh. Culm passing through a 1/32-in- mesh is pulverized until it passes through a 300 mesh and is then burned under boilers. Two plants of this kind are now in successful operation in the anthracite region. Another rather interesting experiment was using 30 per cent. of this pulverized coal with 70 per cent. of oil in the generation of steam in the place of pure oil. This utilization of the fine anthracite, which has always been a waste product and thrown away, is not only fuel conservation in its truest sense but in the case of a bituminous strike, when no strike is contemplated in the anthracite field, will furnish fuel to manufacturing plants that otherwise would be obliged to shut down."

Australian research scientists at the University of Melbourne's Institute of Materials Research have discovered two methods of extracting metals from raw ore, using brown coal. The discoveries could lead to extensive new markets for the brown coal producers of Australia (boasting the world's largest brown coal deposits in the Latrobe Valley region of Victoria), the United States and West Germany. Research on the extraction processes began at the University's Department of Metallurgy in mid-1969 under the direction of Geoffrey Cullen, manager of the Materials Research Institute. In June of this year. Cullen announced that both metal extraction processes, using brown coal, had proven successful.

THIS paper describes a series of tests performed at the Hollinger mill during the past four years, in which both metal and rubber-lined pumps were used for pumping sand and slime. While conditions will not be the same at other mills, it is felt that the information gained from the tests should be of value to other operators and of assistance to them in selecting the most efficient size of pump and kind of lining for economical operation. For the successful operation of pumps with rubber linings there are certain conditions, which, if recognized at the outset, will save the operator a good deal of work and trouble. First is the necessity of keeping sharp pieces of steel, or anything that might cut the lining, out of the pumps. This can be effected by placing screens in the proper locations. Second is to recognize the fact that the rubber lining of the shell, and the rubber cover of the impeller, are subjected to very different conditions. The shell lining, :being at rest and well supported by the metal case, has a relatively easy job compared ? with the impeller covering, which is subjected to centrifugal force and has a tendency to tear itself away from the metal core. Also, the pulp travels through and past the impeller at a high velocity. These two factors, centrifugal force and velocity of the pulp, would appear to set a limit to the speed at which, for a given set of conditions, it is economical to run a rubber-covered impeller. Therefore, a pump should be large enough for the work to be done. To get the best mechanical efficiency, it must be operated somewhere near the limit of its capacity, but this may not give the best overall cost, because the saving in power, due to the high efficiency, may easily be lost through excessive wear on the lining. It would appear that this condition is more critical in a rubber-lined pump than in one lined with metal.

"Brazil is among the few countries with potential for developing all sources of renewable forms of energy. In particular, the country is leading the world efforts of substituting petroleum based fuels for biofuels, such as ethanol and biodiesel. Most of the Brazilian petroleum, which has now achieved self sufficiency, is extracted from offshore wells located at the north region of the state of Rio de Janeiro. In view of the future depletion of petroleum, the State University of the Northern Rio de Janeiro (UENF) has created a Center for Alternative Energies (NEAL) to carry out R&D programs on renewable forms of energy. Today, the main project of the NEAL/UENF is a model park for generation of renewable forms of energy. The objective of this work is to present the structural concept of the park and discuss its contribution in terms of scientific, technological, economical and environmental benefitsIntroductionEnergy is presently a key issue in the world agenda for sustained development and environmental protection. It is of common agreement that the existing status of increasing use of fossil fuels, mainly petroleum, natural gas and coal will not only cause depletion of these resources with a consequent elevation in price but also climate changes, especially global warming. In fact, the humankind may be already facing an irreversible situation of climate alterations as well as reduction of conventional sources of energy. The worse predictions foreseen by specialists, still for this coming century, are dramatic disasters due to catastrophic weather in association with a profound energetic crisis. This scenario may, however, be avoided by actions that could effectively tackle the core of the problem. These actions have been suggested and discussed by scientists and leading authorities, especially in international symposia [1-3]. In particular, the Kyoto Protocol proposed goals for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as well as a mechanism of carbon credits to allow for decreasing CO2 content in the atmosphere without affecting industrial production [3]."

Ther?nal, X-ray, metallographic, and vapor pressure data were obtained to establish the phase diagram and standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds in the Sw-Zn system. Four compounds, SmZn, SmZn2 , SmZn4.s, and SmZn8.5, melt congruently at 960°, 94Z°, 908°, and 940°C, respectively. The cornpounds SlnZns, Sm3Znll, and SnzZn7.3 undergo peritectic decomposition at 855", 870°, and 890C, respectively. Another compound of uncertain stoichiometry, SmZn11, undergoes peritectic decomposition at 760°C. Four entectics were observed with the following compositions in weight percent zinc and eutectic tenzperatures in degrees Centigrade: 12 pct, 680°C; 36 pct, 890°C; 58 pct, 850°C; and 72 pct, 900°C. An allotropic transformation and a composition range were observed for the SmZnz compound. The transfor)nation varies from 905" to 865°C as the zinc content increases from 16.0 to 48.5 wt pct, respectively. The free energy of formation of the compounds at 50PC varies between -15.9 kcal per mole for SmZn to -51.1 kcal per mole for SmZn,.,. Corresponding enthalpies vary between -19.2 to -78.3 kcal per mole. The ther-modynamic properties for the liquid alloys are described by the relations: A search of the literature revealed very little information on the Sm-Zn system. Chao et al.&apos; as well as Iandelli and palenzonai have reported the structure of SmZn to be cubic B2 type and Kuz&apos;ma et al3. have reported the structure of -sm2zn17 to be of the Th2Ni17 type. The purpose of this work was to establish the phase diagram of this system, to determine the zinc vapor pressure over the solid two-phase regions of the SYstem, and to calculate the thermodynamic properties of the compounds. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals used in this investigation were Bunker Hill slab zinc 99.99 wt pct pure and Ames Laboratory samarium. Analysis of the samarium by chemical, spectrographic, and vacuum-fusion methods gave the following average impurities in ppm: Nd, <200; Eu, <100; Gd, <100; Y, <50;Ca, 225; Ta, 400; Mg, 10; Cu, ~50; 0, 175; H, 20; and N, 15. The elements Fe, Si, Cr, Ni, Al, and W were not detected. The samarium was received as sponge metal and was kept under argon except when being cut with shears and when being weighed. Tantalum was found to be a suitable container for alloys with zinc contents up to the Sm2Znl, stoichio-metry. At higher zinc contents the grain boundaries of the tantalum containers were penetrated by the alloy and the containers failed during prolonged annealing. About 25 g of massive zinc and samarium sponge were sealed in tantalum crucibles equipped with thermocouple wells. These crucibles were in turn sealed in stainless-steel jackets. All closures were made by arc welding under an argon atmosphere. The samples were equilibrated in an oscillating furnace and in some cases were given various heat treatments in a soaking furnace. After appropriate heat treatment the steel jackets were removed and the alloy subjected to differential thermal analysis. The apparatus was calibrated against pure zinc and pure copper and found to reproduce the accepted melting points within 1°C. Alloys were subsequently subjected to metallographic examination and those of appropriate compositions were used for X-ray diffraction analysis and for zinc vapor pressure determinations. The vapor pressures were determined by the dewpoint method. Both the differential analysis and dewpoint measuring apparatuses have been described in earlier papers.4, 5 All alloy samples were etched with Nital (0.5 to 3 pct nitric acid in alcohol) except the samarium-rich alloys. These more reactive alloys were electro-polished in a 1 to 6 pct HClO4 in methanol solution at -700c at a potential of 50 v. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Phase Diagram. The results of thermal analysis are indicated by the points on the phase diagram, Fig. 1. Eight compounds and four eutectics were observed. The composition of the compounds and their melting or peritectic temperatures are given on the phase diagram. The four eutectic compositions in wt pct zinc and eutectic temperatures in % are: 12 pct,- 680°C; 36 pct, 890°C; 58 pct, 850°C; and 72 pct, 900°C. The stoichiometry of the most zinc-rich compound is still uncertain, but is very likely either SmZnll or SmZnlz. However, to simplify the presentation which follows it will be referred to as SmZnll. As shown on the phase diagram the phase regions for some of the samarium-rich alloys have not been unambiguously established. To provide the U.S. mining and energy industries with information in the selection of seismic detectors for high-resolution applications, the Bureau of Mines evaluated 35 velocity detectors (geophones) and 9 accelerometers. It was found that velocity detectors with natural frequencies from 10 to 100 Hz were effective for seismic studies in the 5-to 600-Hz spectrum and that accelerometers were most effective in the 100-to 1,000-Hz range. Although the accelerometers described in this report performed about equally with the better velocity detectors tested, the accelerometers showed higher output voltage levels at higher frequencies, which is an advantage. It is important that a seismic detector and its intended purpose be matched properly to achieve the intended results in high-resolution applications. There are many factors that could affect proper matching, thus careful selection of the best detector for a particular application must be exercised.

"Industry generally has become noise-conscious and is realizing that damage to the human ear is expected to become more costly than any other compensation. Noise control has been recognized as a necessity and, fifteen years ago, in co-operation among different countries, inter-national organizations were set up to co-ordinate measures against dangerous noise and the development of silencing devices began. Rock drills for underground operations were particularly scrutinized because of the explosive nature of the noise developing from air escaping from exhaust. This paper describes the results and the present stage of development in the reduction and control of noise on rock drills, with special application to their use in mines."

In this paper, which is aimed to serve as a review article, first of all a breakdown of the earth?s total water reserves is given. The usage areas of water in the mining industry are mentioned and these uses are briefly outlined, together with the main pollution potential of each. According to this, most of the water (almost 80% of it) is utilized in processing. Later on, probable damages that the mining would give to groundwater as a result of acid mine drainage, heavy metal pollution, euthrophication and deoxygenation is described. Finally, the measures and controls that should be taken against water contamination in mines are presented.

The Tyrone copper solution extraction and electrowinning plant was the first such facility built by Phelps Dodge Mining Company in 1984. Over the next 20 years, the aqueous flow rate capacity of the plant has been expanded from the original design of 12,000 gallons per minute (gpm) to 34,000 gpm to meet production goals in the face of declining copper grades in the leach solutions. The ability to process higher aqueous flow rates through existing equipment comes at the expense of increased organic loss through entrainment to raffinate. These losses of organic (diluent and extraction reagents) can account for up to 10 percent of the plant?s total operating costs. With the recent dramatic price increase of petroleum-based products, these operating costs due to losses are sure to increase. This paper will discuss recent improvements at the Tyrone SXEW plant that have resulted in a 40 percent reduction of organic losses. These improvements include picket fence modifications, new fence materials, organic recovery systems, and operational practices within the solution extraction process.

A review of operating practices in zinc electrowinning plants is presented in this paper. Surveys were sent to several zinc electrowinning plants and data provided by some of these plants was compiled in a database. Information about anodes and cathodes, electrolyte composition, stripping methods, cells, electrical systems, and additives was compiled and analyzed. From the data analysis, correlations between operating variables are presented. Recent trends in operational practices are also highlighted.

"A coordinated, integrated research effort aimed at studying the scientific, engineering and medical aspects of the respirable dust problem is underway in the areas of dust generation, dust dispersion and dilution, dust characterization, interaction of dust and lungs, and relationship of seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. (FIGURE 24) The Center's research program explores these concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniques that are consistent with the dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. The fundamental aspects of this work are applicable to the control of respirable dust problems in both hard rock mines and coal mines and to other dusts such as diesel-generated.Research projects in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust have effected several improved methods for the preparation and characterization of the dusts needed by these projects. Superior procedures for generating ""standard"" dust samples have been developed and are in regular use in the laboratory. Questions raised during the course of some projects regarding ""stale"" versus ""fresh"" dust have led to the development of sampling techniques where the dust is directly collected in a surfactant. MSHA and CANMET have requested and received information on Center generated software. An equipment manufacturer, TSI, Inc., requesting input on modifying the inlet of an aerosol sampler has been assisted as a result of research that was conducted at the University of Minnesota.The objectives, scope and progress of all the research projects in the Center, in the form of abstracts and reports, have been detailed in Volume 1 of this series. Research papers written by the principle investigators and resulting from the findings of projects (FIGURE 25) and which are funded by U.S. Bureau of Mines grant number G1135142 have been published in Volumes 3 through 6 and Volume 8 of this series. Volume 2 relates the cooperation and interaction of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust in research on the problem of respirable dust in the mineral industries."

The furnace I am now about to describe was designed to obtain and maintain very high temperature. Knowing the cost of the gas furnace that was in successful operation here and abroad, I approached the subject with some misgivings as to my ability to attain anything like success, or even to reach a point of advancement. There seemed to be a field for a furnace of moderate cost for small mills, or where a particular heat was wanted, but the work was not enough to warrant the outlay necessary to build any gas furnace yet brought before the public. Formally, a mathematical model could be defined as: A set of equations whose solution will approximate the response of a physical process or system to a set of stimuli which appear as parameters in the equations. The purpose of a mathematical model is to permit the rationalization of experience to proceed by simulation rather than by physical experimentation. In the application of digital computer control to an industrial process, the mathematical model of the process (subsequently called the process model) is needed to calculate the present process performance from the measured variables and to predict the response of the process to a control change. Functionally, the cardinal element in process model development is a concise set of control objectives. These, besides implicitly defining the boundaries of the system to be modeled, will determine the accuracy demanded of the model its nature: dynamic or steady-state, and so forth, The objectives should explicitly define what process efficiencies, production rates, qualities are to lie within the scope of the computer control project, thereby providing a basis for simplifying assumptions in the development of the model. This requirement, a limited set of control objectives, is so often disregarded in formulating industrial control problems that its repetition can scarcely be avoided.

A quantitative x-ray diffraction method has been developed for the analysis of alteration minerals in wallrock. Alteration data are plotted and contoured (analogous to geochemical data). Alteration trends outlined by this technique correlate closely with geochemical anomalies, and in some cases extend well beyond the perimeter of anomalous base metal values. "Monomineralic contouring," applied originally to porphyry-type mineralization, has been extended to other types of mineralization, including volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Equipment and techniques used in the quantitative measurement of alteration mineralogy are discussed.

The features bringing; the text up-to-date include: (a) Description of the principal modern gravimeters; particular attention to the method of simultaneous oscillation of 4 pendulums; (b) discussion of the aperiodic oscillation of torsion balances; outline of the construction of variometers Z -20 and Z-40; (c) material for aid in interpretation, such as reference-charts, formulas with their derivation, atlas of theoretical curves, and examples of interpretative calculations; (d) considerations in the planning of surveys and the densities of various rocks; and (e) detailed analysis of significant examples.
