THE use of small substations for the supplying of 275-volt energy to the locomotive and cutting machines in coal mines is a well-established practice. A few years ago, when labor costs were lower, these substations were located as near to the load as possible, and an operator was provided for each station. This practice has now become so expensive that substations are being located with reference to other mining machinery, such as hoists or pumps, so that one operator can look after both. Some-times the substation is operated by one whose duties make him traverse quite a large area. In such cases the interruption of alternating-current supply may produce a long interruption in the direct current, as the station cannot resume service until this man reaches it. Such interruptions interfere seriously with production and may easily counterbalance the supposed saving gained by such operating methods. The grouping of substations for convenience in operating may also result in excessive copper loss and consequently poor trolley voltage, with its attendant evils of low locomotive speeds and increased locomotive motor maintenance. The speed of the coal-cutting machines will also be reduced. By relieving the substation of its, burden of the operating labor cost, the most economical location, from an electrical standpoint, may be chosen. The matter of machine insurance should also be considered. If an attendant is caring for several kinds of equipment, he cannot watch the machine continually for signs of trouble; therefore, continued overload, phase failure, low alternating-current voltage, bearing trouble, etc. may result. Some partly automatic equipments have been installed; these have protection against low voltage, reverse current, and bearing trouble and are provided with automatic reclosing circuit breakers. This is a step in the right direction but it does not go far enough to give first-class machine insurance.

SIZING is the process of separating mixed particles into groups of particles all of the same size, or into groups in which all particles range between certain definite maximum and minimum sizes. In coal preparation, sizing is generally accomplished by passing the coal over screens. Separation by differential settling in air or water currents has been adapted to the special field of separating very fine sizes, and these processes are in commercial use to a relatively small extent in the coal industry. Separation with screens is a very old industrial practice. Agricola described the use of screens for ore treatment in the middle ages. In the literature of the British coal industry references were made to the screening of coal as early as 1589, but the practice of extensive sizing for the market did not become general until the last half of the nineteenth century. In America, the practice of sizing developed first in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, beginning with the use of rakes' in the mine working places to recover coarse coal. This mining procedure left the fines in the mine. Preparation outside the mine started with the installation of station¬ary cast-iron plates with 4 to 6-in. square holes. The run-of-mine coal was dumped upon the platforms, the large pieces of rock were picked out by hand, and the large lumps of coal were broken with hammers. The term "breaker," which still applies to the anthracite-preparation plant, originated with this practice, but the term is no longer descriptive of the entire function of the plant. In 1884, the first power-operated anthracite coal breaker' was erected by Gideon Bart at his colliery at Wolf Creek near Minersville, Pa. This plant utilized a system of rolls for breaking the coal and revolving screens for sizing. The plant was driven by a steam engine. It 'could handle

INTRODUCTION Increasing a miner's chance of surviving a disaster requires advance planning for emergencies, adequate training of personnel, and the provision of proper survival equipment. It is extremely important that fires and toxic gases be detected early, and that warning systems such as stench, audible and visual alarms, and communications systems be provided to allow timely escape. However, situations do occur where timely warning is not provided and immediate escape is not possible, regardless of the precautions that are taken. Under such circumstances, a combination of new per¬sonal protective devices and old techniques can provide protection that is adequate to save a miner's life. SELF-RESCUE EQUIPMENT Self-rescuers are devices which provide a short-term supply of respirable air under the potentially lethal con¬ditions following a mine disaster. Functioning either as filtration devices for the elimination of carbon monoxide (CO) or as oxygen supplies, self-rescuers allow an endangered miner a limited amount of time in which to effect an escape or reach a place of temporary safety. Carbon-Monoxide Self-Rescuers For almost 50 years, filtration self-rescuers have protected miners' lives following explosions or fires. Designed to eliminate carbon monoxide from inhaled air, the first of these devices was approved in the 1920s and has evolved into the two units that are approved today-the Mine Safety Appliance (MSA) W-65 and the Draeger 810. Both of these units rely on the cata¬lytic conversion of very toxic carbon monoxide to rela¬tively safe levels of carbon dioxide (CO,). As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, both of these filtration self-rescuers operate in the same manner. On inhalation, the mine air passes through both coarse and fine filters that remove the dust, preventing the dust from coating the chemical beds or entering the miner's mouth. The air then passes over a drying agent that removes water vapor; this is required to prevent the water vapor from poisoning the catalyst. Subsequently, the dried air passes over the Hopcalite catalyst, where carbon monoxide is converted to carbon dioxide. Then, the air passes through a heat exchanger that reduces the temperature of the inhaled air. Finally, the air is inhaled by the user. Air exhaled by the user passes through the heat ex¬changer and exits the device through an expiratory valve. Both units of this type are subject to certain limita¬tions: 1) The units do not protect the user against oxygen¬deficient air; when air is inhaled through this type of self-rescuer, the device only removes the carbon mon¬oxide. If the mine air contains less than 15% oxygen, anoxia is inevitable. Symptoms of anoxia include dizzi¬ness, shortness of breath, quickened pulse, and deeper and more rapid respiration while the victim is at rest. During heavy exertion such as would be expected dur¬ ing escape efforts, a 15% oxygen level can cause loss of consciousness. 2) The units do not protect against excessive levels of carbon dioxide. Available data on carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide concentrations following explosions or fires are limited, but there are indications that the carbon monoxide concentration can rise to 2% and the carbon dioxide concentration can reach 5 or 6% of the mine air (by volume). In some situations, the in¬haled air could contain up to 6 or 7% carbon dioxide. At a carbon dioxide concentration higher than 2%, breathing patterns can be affected adversely. At a con¬centration of 6 or 7%, the effects include severe respira¬tory distress, with unconsciousness resulting from exer¬tion such as that needed for escape activities. 3) The units do not protect against high inhalation temperatures. The catalytic oxidation of carbon mon¬oxide to carbon dioxide is an exothermic reaction that evolves a large amount of heat. As the carbon monoxide concentration increases, the temperature of the inhaled air also increases. Available data show that above 1.5% carbon monoxide, the air inhaled through some self¬rescuers can be as high as 90°C (194°F). At those

Raman analysis is a well-established method for finding the abundant minerals in an ore sample. In this study, Raman spectroscopy is tested as a method for rapid and contactless on-line mineral analysis. Rapidness might enable on-site analysis of rock drillcore, which in turn would lead to more cost-efficient solutions in mineral exploration. This paper discusses the use of Raman analysis to identify minerals and to measure their concentration. The sample set under study consists of rock drillcore collected from Agnico-Eagle Kittilä Mine, Finland. Selected parts of the sample set are measured by Raman spectroscopy and the minerals are identified using reference spectra from a public source. Moreover, the direct measurement of concentration of different minerals with the help of Non-negative least squares (NNLS) optimisation algorithm is considered. The optimisation algorithm was constructed to form a linear combination of reference spectra which best represent the measured spectrum, or an average of measured spectra, from an ore sample. The results show that NNLS can identify abundant minerals in a given sample. Also through this method of analysis the results of a traditional point-count method can be expanded: It was observed that, due to grain size, multiple minerals consistently appear in the spectra measured over an area, which means that point-count method is not a proper way to interpret the spectra. This can be seen as a new result, as formerly the discussion has attended to other methods.

"The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD), is continuing its High-Energy High-Displacement (HEHD) testing of field-scale shotcrete panels. A test program was developed to determine the relationship between applied force, displacement, and energy for both unreinforced and reinforced shotcrete panels. Reinforcement options consisted of synthetic macro-fibers, sprayed polyurea liners, chain-link fence, welded-wire mesh, and combinations of these products. During testing, photogrammetry was used to measure the geometric changes of the panels, including volume changes and panel cracking. These measurements were correlated with the load and displacement data, allowing visual observation to be related to the applied force and displacement. The test results provide a comparison of the mechanical performance of the various panel types and can be used by the practicing engineer to evaluate installed support based on visual observation of cracking and deformation. Visual assessment of the loading cycle and strength capacity of shotcrete in underground excavations will improve mine safety by providing a means to quantify the stability of installed shotcrete support. INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is continuing research on the behavior of shotcrete when used as the surface support component in mining ground support systems. Ground control safety often depends on supporting, or at least containing, the ground between the rockbolts. Shotcrete and mesh, in various combinations and with other components, are often used to accomplish this (see Figure 1). Maintaining support pressure during ground deformation is key to the performance of these systems, and to ensuring miner safety. However, the toughness of a ground support system–the ability to maintain strength over large deformations–is difficult to quantify. Researchers at SMRD have responded to this deficiency by designing a full-scale test device, described previously by Martin et al. [2015a], and beginning a testing program to assess the behavior of shotcrete surface support reinforced with a variety of products including: fibers, chain-link mesh, welded-wire mesh, spray-on polyurea liners, and combinations of these products. "Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited, Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada, has developed a metallurgical wastewater treatment system employing two-stage lime neutralization, sludge recirculation and conventional mechanical thickening.Laboratory investigations, initiated in 1970, led to the construction of a pilot-scale minewater treatment plant, at Schist Lake Mine, in early 1971. This plant, treating 600 cubic meters/day wastewater containing 30-60 mg/l zinc, demonstrated metal extraction efficiencies of 99% under normal operating conditions.On the basis of this pilot work, a second pilot-scale treatment system was established in 1975 at the Flin Flon metallurgical plant to treat zinc refinery process waste water. Through numerous improvements, including automatic control equipment, the system has evolved to a full-scale operation capable of treating 800 cubic meters/ day wastewater containing 4-11 gm/l zinc. Treated effluent contains 0.2-20 mgll zinc. Hydroxide sludge produced returns to the metallurgical process for recovery of metals while clarified effluent discharges to waste.With the system, Hudson Bay Mining has achieved its original goal: the reduction of environmental contamination, while realizing ii return from metal recovery."

THE carbonizing properties of one medium- and and five low-volatile coals from West Virginia and one high-volatile A and two medium-volatile coals from Pennsylvania were determined by 800° and 900° C. BM-AGA carbonization tests and expansion tests in the sole-heated oven. Plastic properties of the coals and the yields and quality of their cokes and other carbonization products were determined. The low-volatile coals comprised a mine and a coke-plant sample of Pocahontas No. 6-bed coal from the. Black Eagle No. 1 mine, Wyoming County, W. Va.; a mine sample of Pocahontas No. 6 bed from the Louisville mine, Mercer County, W. Va. ; Davy Sewell bed was sampled at the Twin Branch mine, McDowell County, W. Va.; and Fire Creek bed was sampled at the Dunedin No. 1 mine, Raleigh County, W. Va. The medium-volatile coals were from the Fire Creek bed, Laurel Creek mine, Greenbrier County, W. Va.; Lower Kittanning bed, Springfield No. 4 mine, Cambria County, Pa.; and Upper Kittanning bed, Springfield No. 6 mine, Clearfield County, Pa. The high-volatile A coal represented the Upper and Lower Freeport beds, Kent Nos. 1 and 2 mines, Indiana County, Pa. In addition to the coals listed, high-volatile A coal from the Pittsburgh bed, Warden mine, Allegheny County, Pa., a standard blending coal, was used in blends in this investigation.

-4s a result of world economic conditions brought about by the European war and the consequent loss of European markets for Venezuelan crude, production in Venezuela decreased from 205,433,000 bbl. in 1939 to 186,134,000 bbl. in 1940, or 9.4 per cent. This decline interrupted a steady annual increase in production from the country, which had been continuous since 1932. The Maracaibo Lake Basin in western Venezuela accounted for 135,738,000 bbl. during 1940, or 73 per cent of the total, as against eastern Venezuela's production of 50,396,000 bbl., or 27 per cent of the total for the country. Corresponding figures for 1939 were 167,688,000 bbl., or 82 per cent of the total from the Lake Basin, and 37,744,000 bbl., or 18 per cent from the east. These comparisons indicate the increasing importance of the newer developments in eastern Venezuela, but it is unlikely that production from the east will ever exceed that from the west. In all, 429 new wells were completed in Venezuela during 1940 as compared to 438 in 1939. Of the 1940 completions, 411 were in proved areas and 18 were wildcats; 389 (95 per cent) of the exploitation wells drilled were producers, I was a gas well and 21 were dry holes, while 6 (33 per cent) of the wildcats drilled were producers and 12 (67 per cent) were dry; 263 of the exploitation wells and 4 of the wildcats were in the Maracaibo Lake Basin and 148 exploitation wells and 14 wildcats were in the east, mostly in the State of Anzoategui. Exploration of the light-oil areas in the Tia Juana and Lagunillas fields was con- tinued during the year with favorable results. Along the lake shore, drilling was confined principally to fill-in wells in the La Kosa, Tia Juana, Laguni!las and Bachaquero fields, although some important semi-exploratory drilling was done in the Pueblo Viejo area between Lagunillas and Bachaquero fields. The only other developments of particular interest in the west were the successful completion of a step-out well lying to the south of the former southern limit of Mene Grande field, which adds considerable proved acreage to that field; and the failure of two wildcats that were drilled near the Colombian border to determine whether the productive sands of the Petrolea field in the Barco Concession, Colombia, extend into Venezuelan territory. In the east no new fields were discovered during the year, although five wildcats were completed as producers. Three of these, Guario No. I, Jusepin-56 and LM-I (Leona), discovered important extensions to previously proved areas and the remaining two, Cantos-I and SPN-I (Socororo), were subsequently proved to have tapped productive sands of small extent and operations in these areas have been suspended. The greatest activity in the east was concentrated in the Oficina field, where 105 new wells were completed during the year and production was increased from 22,540 bbl. per day during January 1940 to 57,627 bbl. per day during December 1940. Important development work was also done in the Jusepin. San Joaquin and El Koble fields.

Automation techniques are used during the design stage of continuous miners to decrease the time required and ensure the accuracy of the design. This is followed by automated manufacturing processes to reduce manufacturing time and improve the quality and consistency of parts. Combined, the result is a more reliable machine that can provide ongoing production capability. With the use of automation to enhance operator effectiveness and monitor machine condition, the productivity of machines is also improved. Productivity of continuous miners doubled over a 10-year span (Fig. 1). Although this article focuses on the continuous miner, it should be recognized that production increases of the continuous miner would not be realized without increased capabilities throughout the rest of the mining system. There are several aspects of automation that have played a role in providing increased continuous miner productivity. Though some are considered indirect, they still had significant influence on the overall result. Basically, productivity increases are obtained by cutting, loading and transporting the coal at a maximum rate. In addition, these tasks must be consistent, with minimal downtime. Therefore, the miner had to improve in operational capability and reliability. Automation techniques used during machine design, manufacturing and operation have all played significant roles in achieving higher productivity.

This paper outlines the manner in which legislative control for tunnelling and allied operations has evolved, detailing Victorian experience. It examines the concept of mine managers as it relates to the industry and attemps to illustrate its benefits. The Victorian experience in relation to fatal and serious accidents is examined in detail, particularly in the allied art of trenching and examines the Krings system of trench lining support which is hoped will catalyse an increase of engineering expertise in this area. The paper concludes by demonstrating that safety awareness is not incompatible with production efficiency or economic viability.

Although the measurement of blast vibration close to the blasthole is critical to the understanding of rock fragmentation mechanisms and blast damage in the rock masses, limited experience for such monitoring exists. Because much higher vibration amplitude and frequency ranges are expected in rock masses close to an explosive charge as compared to far field vibrations, different problems from those for the far field monitoring must be considered for near field blast vibration monitoring. Currently, guidelines for design of the near field blast monitoring systems do not exist. This paper describes the development of an integrated technique for vibration monitoring close to a blast hole, including selection and installation of transducers, design of a monitoring system and signal recording. A densified cement was designed for grouting accelerometers in order to match p-wave impedance between the rock and grout. The monitoring technique described has proven suitable for blast vibration monitoring within 2 m to 15 m of a blast hole having loading conditions similar to production blasts.

The flooding of open strip coal mines in the Bowen Basin and Hunter Valley Coalfields of Eastern Australia has the potential to soften the spoil and floor materials to produce “mud”. This mud can act as a slip plane or weak zone when spoil is dumped into it, resulting in geotechnical instabilities. It is therefore important to understand the mechanisms and degree of degradation likely to occur within coal mine spoil of different qualities.To investigate this, five clay mineral-rich coal mine spoil samples were collected from the Bowen Basin, and each sample was subjected to wetting and drying cycles to simulate degradation that could be expected on wetting-up in situ, with their particle size distribution analysed both before and after degradation. These results were compared with the results of a modified slake durability test, in which the entire sample was tested.The paper presents the results of the accelerated degradation and modified slake durability tests on each of the five spoil samples. These results were related to the physical and geochemical characteristics of the samples, which highlighted their importance. The modified slake durability test may be used to rapidly simulate the expected in situ degradation of coal mine spoil on wetting-up, enabling susceptible spoil materials to readily be identified.CITATION:Vangsness, T A, Williams, D J, Ahn, J and Miles, B, 2018. New Mexico produced 38,882,342 bbl. of oil in 1943, and regained seventh place among the oil-producing states. This production was an increase of 6,968,526 bbl., or 21.8 per cent, over the figure for 1942. The maximum per-well allowable on Jan. I, 1943, was 38 bbl. daily and at the end of the year this figure had been increased to 48 bbl. Allocations as set by the New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission closely followed recommendations by the Petroleum Administrator for War and the average daily pipe-line runs were 106,476 bbl., being within 2.2 per cent of these allocations. Production for Lea County was 33,043,925 bbl.; Eddy County, 5,405,-967 bbl.; northwestern New Mexico, 432,070 bbl., and Chaves County, 380 barrels. Drilling activity for New Mexico in 1943 was only 75 per cent of that in 1942, with 255 completions. Of these completions 180 were oil wells, 10 gas wells and 65 dry holes. The ratio of dry holes to producers, more than I to 3, was the greatest in recent years. Of these dry holes, 46 were drilled within the boundaries of proven . areas while 19 were wildcats. Wildcat drilling during 1943 was responsible for the discovery of four new oil fields and one new gas field, as well as three extensions to existing proration areas. At the close of the year the New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission had designated 64 areas as proven for oil and/or gas. The Monument area was again New Mexico's largest producing oil field, with an annual production of 7,228,855 bbl. Next was Eunice, with 6,461,044 bbl., followed by Vacuum with 4,946,110 bbl. IIobbs, ranking fourth, with 3,799,114 bbl., was the leader in total recovery with an accumulated production of 104,180,53I bbl., or more than 10,000 bbl. per acre to date. Drilling activity in Lea County accounted for completion of 67 oil wells, 2 gas wells and 24 dry holes. One of these oil wells was the discovery well of a new area and three extended proven areas. The most active drilling campaign in the county was again in the Maljamar area, where 18 oil wells were completed. The Maljamar Cooperative Repressuring Agreement affected 141 producing wells, and operations were a decided success, more than 85 per cent of the gas produced being returned to formation. The new oil field for Lea County was designated as the San Simon area although boundaries have not been established to date. Discovery well for this area was the Skelly Oil Company's State U. No. I, in theNE. NE. K of sec. 5, T.22 S.,R.ssE. This well was drilled to a total depth of 4183 ft. and plugged back to 4138 ft. after encountering bottom-hole water. Initial production was 124 bbl. per day on the pump. This oil is 37.4' gravity and has a sulphur content of I per cent. Productian is from Yates sand of Permian age. At the Metropolitan Nashville International Airport, with its more than 600 scheduled daily flights from American Airlines hub operations, other scheduled airline flights, Tennessee Air National Guard operations, as well as numerous industry air flights, the excavation of 300,000 cubic yards of rock was required without disrupting airport operations for a cut and cover underground tunnel with a 4 lane US Highway and new airplane runway to extend across it's top. In addition to the excavation, the removed rock was to be broken to specification type that was clean and of small size for fill in another area of the airport property. The blasting was limited to two 1/2 hour windows per day and stiff monetary penalties were in place for schedule slippage of each phase of the project.

Minas de Matahambre, a copper mine located 100 miles southwest of Havana, Cuba, has produced 10 million tons of copper ore since it was first opened up in 1913. During the mid-1950's the mine was producing approximately 1000 tpd and had attained a depth of 3600 ft. As shown in Fig. 1, the property contains three shafts: the No. 1 shaft, 2100 ft deep and located 2000 ft south of the No. 2 shaft, provided service to the 2100 level; the vertical 3600-ft No. 2 shaft handled all production to the 3400 level; the No. 3 shaft on the northeasterly fringe of the mining area was in a semi-active status.

The Manassas Quarry is a large industrial stone quarry in Northern Virginia owned and operated by Vulcan Materials Company. The quarry experienced instability in a portion of the north wall, which included toppling failure in a metasediment and movement on a major fault zone. It was necessary to take remedial measures to stabilize the wall and create good quality final pit walls.

This study examines the surface alteration and flotation behaviour of synthetic moncheite, PtPd(BiTe)2, in the presence of pentlandite. The telluride minerals contribute around 20% ~ 30% and up to 45% of the PGM present in the Platreef ore and are considered to be slow floating as there is evidence of these minerals reporting to the tailings. It was proposed that oxidation products from other minerals and grinding media would affect the mineral surface composition and floatability thereby causing inadvertent depression of moncheite due to precipitating ions. ToF-SIMS analyses (time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry) was used to characterise the mineral surface as well as the extent of surface alteration. Microflotation was used to deter-mine the hydrophobicity of the synthetic minerals. Conditioning of moncheite in the presence of pentlandite reduced the flotation response of the + 38 -106µm size fraction from > 99% to 56%. This was due to pentlandite dissolution products (iron and nickel hydroxy species) which formed overlayers on the mineral surfaces thereby inhibiting the adsorption of collector. In addition, further grinding of these samples, with and without pentlandite conditioning showed a negative effect on recovery due to the fineness of the particle size distribution and there was no advantage gained from any possible exposure of fresh sites in the sample.
