High pressure abrasive water jets have been shown capable of cutting a wide range of materials including steel, stone, rock and concrete. Acceptable performance can be achieved using relatively low pressures and expendable abrasives. The cutting head can be made small and abrasive feed systems have been developed that allow reliable pumping of slurries over long distances to supply such cutting heads. These features make abrasive water jets ideally suited to automated control in remote areas.Another major advantage of abrasive entraining water jet cutting heads is that they may be operated safely in potentially explosive environments due to their cold cutting ability. Therefore there are many possible applications for such equipment in mining.This paper gives an introduction to the abrasive water jet process and includes results of trials carried out at BHRA on a range of hard materials. Work is also described which investigated the operational safety of abrasive water jets in explosive environ-ments. In a special environmental chamber, cuts were made on steel and sandstone with atmospheres of methane/air and hydrogen/air, without caypsing ignition.

Although the number of operating longwalls in the United States (approximately 100) has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have significantly increased and in some cases more than doubled. As a result of this production increase, control of respirable dust continues to be a problem. Therefore, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, Dust Division, initiated a study to investigate the availability and adequacy of technology for controlling dust on longwall mining operations. The study involved 23 longwall mining operations in three different Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts. Each operation was visited for a full shift. Respirable dust samples were collected on face personnel and at fixed locations along the face. Methods being used to control dust were noted, with special emphasis placed on obtaining quantitative data relative to ventilation, headgate dust controls, cutting drum sprays, external machine sprays and cutting sequence. Attempts were made to correlate dust control practices in place at the time of the visit to dust concentrations measured at the tail and on the tail shearer operator and to the average of all the dust concentration measurements from the occupations sampled. The methods used to control dust were also compared to the gamut of methods known to be available. This paper presents a discussion on the effectiveness of the methods being used to control dust and on the availability of technology for the control of dust on longwall mining operations.

Signgareni Collieries Company Ltd. is operating the JK Opencast Project, at Yellandu, with a rated annual capacity of 1.6 Mt of coal with an average stripping ratio of 4.3. This opencast coal project has three working sections, OC-II block, C-Block and D-Block These workings are operating in close proximity to the JR-5 Longwall Shed, 26-Dip Incline, other structures of 26-Dip, and a Township. There were complaints about ground vibrations and fly rock problems caused due to blasting operations, especially in OC-II and D-Blocks. In view of this, studies were taken up to eliminate the problems of ground vibrations and fly rock.

"Abstract - Four main podiform occurrences of chromite have been distinguished in the ultramafic Bulqiza massif, Albania; they are associated from the bottom to the top with: i) basal harzburgites (lower tectonite sequence), ii) dunitic lens-bearing harzbugites (middle-upper tectonite sequence), iii) layered chromitite-bearing dunites of transitional zone, and, iiii) the stratigraphically lowermost part of the magmatic section. However, only the occurrences hosted by rocks ii) and iii) are economically important.Chromite compositions similar to those of other podiform chromites are bimodal. Thus, chromites from occurrences ii) and iii) are richer in Cr than chromites from the other two occurrences. Accessory chromite disseminated throughout the massif is richer in Fe than orebody chromite, displaying similar range of the Cr/Cr+Al ratios, with accessory residue chromite matching the characteristic (Cr/Cr+Al >0.6) range of type-III Alpine peridotites. Both orebody and accessory chromites show compositional ranges correlating with host-rock compositions, i.e., the Cr-rich chromites are hosted by the most refractory ultramafic rocks. Therefore, the Cr/Cr+Al and Mg/Fetot (Cr/Fetot) ratios of chromite are useful for exploration of high-grade, metallurgical chromite ore at Bulqiza and in other massifs of similar geodynamic setting."

The effect of small additions of silver on the actiziity of zinc in dilute solution with molten bismuth has been determined ill the range 450° to 650°C. Experimental measurements were made in a multi-electrode galvanic cell. All zinc activities showed large positive deviations from Raoult's Law. The results are expressed in terms of the interaction parameter EJ, as defined by Wagner. In the binary Zn-Bi system, Henry's Law was followed at zinc concentrations below 5 mol pct, thus indicating that the binary or self-interaction parameter of zinc in bismuth is essentially zero. The Henry's Law con- THE determination of thermodynamic interaction parameters requires accurate knowledge of solute activities in the dilute-solution region. Dealy and Pehlke1 have summarized the basis for interaction relations, discussed some theoretical implications, and presented a compilation of interaction parameters calculated for molten nonferrous alloys from stant ranged from 2.43 at 650°C to 3.96 at 450°C. The binary zinc activities were consistent with published data for higher zinc concentrations . The ternary interaction parameter ranged from -1.90 at 650°C to -3.30 at 450° C, varying linearly with the reciprocal of the absolute temperature. The negative value for the parameter reflects the fact that addition of silver decreases the activity of zinc in solution with bismuth. data available in the literature. Most of the data were for two-component systems from which only the self-interactions, Ei, could be calculated. Concentration ranges were often such that a considerable extrapolation was required for calculations at lnfinite dilution. The data for ternary systems were quite limited and often unavailable in suitable systematic fashion—thus few values of the parameter e| could be obtained. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, Wits University, research Wits Metallurgy celebrated its centenary in 2004. The department has been at the forefront of education and research and has contributed greatly to the metals and minerals industry, both in South Africa and abroad, in terms of human resources and knowledge generation. A significant number of industry and academic leaders worldwide are Wits Metallurgy graduates. Since its early beginnings, pyrometallurgy has always been part of the curricula and research offered by the department. Pyrometallurgical activities started to expand tremendously from the middle of the 1960s, especially by the formation - together with Mintek - of the Pyrometallurgy Research Group, which continues its internationally recognised research activities today. The research efforts have been concentrated on problems associated particularly with ferroalloy, steel, stainless steel production, and PGM/Cu-Ni sulphide smelting. In recent years, research has been further expanded to physical modelling of pyrometallurgical reactors. Almost all of the specific research projects were handled from a fundamental point of view, and hence a large number of MSc(Eng) and PhD degrees were achieved by candidates under the supervision of the Pyrometallurgy Research Leaders. Moreover, a significant portion of the research results were published in internationally recognized journals and conference proceedings. Among these, Infacon and the Molten Slags, Fluxes and Salts Conference series are worth mentioning. The studies from a fundamental point of view include thermodynamics, phase equilibria, transport phenomena, kinetics, and process dynamic aspects of high temperature processes and systems, both in the solid and liquid states.

A new type of zirconium mineralization has been recognized in the Devonian volcanic rocks from an orogenic depression in the Central Kazakhstan. The most characteristic features of this deposit are the fine-grained nature of the zirconium mineralization, an unusual texture of the zirconium ores, and a close association of zirconium with phosphorus in the ores. Zircon grains form fine globular aggregates with the features of hexagonal crystal habit. In addition to crystalline zircon, the ores contain metacolloidal zircon, similar to hydrozircon. The morphological and textural features of the zirconium ores suggest that the deposition of ore deposits took place at a low temperature from colloidal solutions. It is believed that this deposit should be considered to be a new type of zirconium mineralization that is related to low-temperature hydrothermal processes.

Hydrothermal method was applied in the preparation of calcium sulfate whiskers in airtight re-actor using gypsum as primary materials. The optimum conditions of preparation are as follows: pH value 9.8~10.1, concentration 5%, material size 18.1µm, which were determined by the analysis of the diameter of CaSO4 whiskers through SEM. On these conditions a product of ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers with diameter of 0.19µm and aspect ratio of 98 is obtained. Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers with different concentrations, modified by titanate NDZ-401, were added into polypropylene as intensifier and composites of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers/ polypropylene were prepared by melting-extruding method. Mechanical performance of the composites was tested and surface morphology of the composites was observed by SEM. The results indicated that impact notched izod of the composites was enhanced by 49.5% compared with pure polypropylene when 10.0% Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers were added into polypropylene and toughening effect was very remarkable. Dispersion behaviour and interface phenomenon of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers in polypropylene matrix were investigated by SEM. The results indicated that Dispersion performance of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers modified by titanate NDZ-401 in polypropylene matrix is good, which improved mechanical performance of composites to some extent.

One-quarter of a century has passed since the "theory of regionalized variables" (geostatistics) was introduced by G. Matheron (1962, 1963) in France. Yet, only during the past decade has geostatistics found broad acceptance in the mining industry. Foremost among the reasons for this time lag was ignorance. The first English treatise on geostatistics was not written until Matheron (1971), and the first published text accessible to mining professionals did not appear until David (1977). Other significant reasons for the slow acceptance of geostatistics included the conservative nature of management in the 1970s minerals industry, and the fact that conventional ore reserve estimation performs reasonably well when confined to massive deposits of base metal and iron deposits having relatively low coefficients of variation in grades. In short, mine engineers and geologists were not willing to accept a new set of tools for problems that they did not see.

Un estudio anterior sobre la mena Pb. Zn en la concentradora de Paragsha determinó que los finos encontrados en la alimentación de los molinos, se podía separar, evitando la remolienda y la alimentación directa del ciclón, para luego obtener los productos destinados a la flotación y molienda, respectivamente. En este sentido, el objetivo del texto, radica en mostrar los resultados del uso de los cedazos DSM en los molinos primarios, asi como el proceso de la adaptación del mismo. El acondicionamiento de los cedazos DSM es un proceso que permite recibir alimentación de una faja transportadora y descargar su cajón de alimentación original, que está diseñado para la descarga de la bomba. De forma que la aplicación de los cedazos DSM es factible en menas que no necesitan molienda, donde se aumenta la capacidad en el equipo de la molienda, se mejora la clasificación de los productos, y surgen nuevas perspectivas de incrementar la metalurgia, especialmente en especies friables. Asimismo la ubicación de un cedazo DSM varía de acuerdo a la necesidad, sea la entrada de molinos, ciclones, descargas de molinos de varillas, bombas con productos por clasificar, equipos de heavy medium, etc.

Many coal seams are associated with soft floor strata. During mine development, if coal pillars are not properly designed, floor heave occurs and causes interruption of coal production. In the severe cases, the section or mine is abandoned. One method for controlling floor heave is floor bolting. This paper describes the demonstration of flour bolting methods in a West Virginia, info coal mine. Three methods were used: vertical full resin bolting, floor truss bolting and floor truss bolting pins a floor slot at the center of the entry. The design of each method and the experimental results are discussed.

As mining activity moves to remote and less developed locations globally, a holistic approach to mine development is fundamental for achieving a balance between strong financial returns and corporate social responsibility and transparency. Key inter-related fundamentals such as social licence to operate, life-of-mine operational planning, minimising environmental impacts and, most importantly, attractive investment returns for the mining company all contribute to the viability of any new mining project.However, the typical practice in the mining industry is often to treat environmental and social/community aspects as separate compliance issues that are dealt with at minimum cost and disruption to the project and resulting operation. This often results in less than optimum environmental and social outcomes, and presents considerable liabilities at the time of closure when rehabilitation programs continue to require funding when all revenue has ceased.The five capitals model seeks to identify each of the key contributors to sustainable development as financial, manufactured/physical, social, human and natural to formulate a type of triple bottom line approach balancing these often competing project factors. The SUSOP® sustainability risks and opportunities framework, developed by the mining industry, bases its approach on the five capitals model and proposes an approach that breaks down enterprise silos to identify innovative solutions for life-of-mine sustainability. This framework has been developed with the nature of mining projects in mind in order to produce approaches and outcomes relevant throughout the life cycle from the planning phases, through project design and construction into operation and closure.This paper argues the need for a more holistic approach to the development and operation of mining projects, and presents case studies where a holistic approach has been applied, in whole or part, and discusses the lessons learned from these case studies.CITATION:Corder, G D, Keith, A and Dyer, L, 2014. Current scale-up procedures are discussed critically, including: constant specific energy criterion; determination of mill size and power for a given ore, throughput and mesh of grind; specification of operating speed and loading. A major dynamic and kinetic factor now recognized is that the ratio of media rotational flow to ore axial flow, and the number of mill revolutions that ore is subjected to during residence, both diminish as mill diameter increases. These factors can lead to capacity limitations when mill diameters reach a critical range, especially regarding coarse sizes. Experience at the Bougainville and Pinto Valley operations is contrasted. Corrective measures suggested are to reduce loading and increase speed towards the Davis best operating speed.

An attempt has been made to parameterize the population balance model for a ball mill based on measurements of the elementary breakage process obtained using an ultrafast load cell device. Detailed insight obtained concerning the fragmentation of particle assemblies with the ultrafast load cell leads to a better understanding of ball mill grinding. The ball mill breakage function and specific selection function are derived from an average single event representing the multiple breakage events which occur in ball mill grinding. Since both the breakage function and the specific selection function depend on the loading mode in the mill, predictions of breakage mechanisms in ball mills are possible by using data obtained in various elementary loading modes. The application of this model to the description of batch ball milling behavior has resulted in reasonably accurate predictions of product size distributions for various energy inputs.

THE precipitation of the nitride Fe4N from the solid solution of nitrogen in a Fe and of the phosphide Fe3P from the solid solution of phosphorus in a Fe both lead to the formation of structures that may be easily identified as Widmanstätten figures, within the meaning of the term as used in this series of papers. A complete solution has been obtained for the figure formed by Fe4N. The structure of Fe,P, however, is not fully known and a complete solution of this figure thus cannot be obtained; nevertheless, a study of this figure has furnished some new information. PRECIPITATION OF FE4N FROM ALPHA SOLID SOLUTION OF N IN ALPHA FE Constitution of System Iron-nitrogen A knowledge of the constitution of the whole of the Fe-N system is unnecessary for this work, though the recent studies by Eisenhut and Kaupp1 and by Lehrer2 have clarified most of the moot points; it is sufficient for our purpose to state that a Fe of high purity dissolves 0.42 per cent of nitrogen in solid solution at the eutectoid temperature, 591° C., and that this solubility decreases at first rapidly and then more slowly until at room temperature the solid solubility amounts to approximately 0.1 per cent nitrogen.3

The increase in productivity which has been achieved in mining during the past two decades has been attained largely through the replacement of manpower with electrical power. Power demands should continue to increase, requiring electrical distribution systems to be well planned to avoid inadequate voltage levels caused by underdesign and excessive costs resulting from overdesign. To aid the mining electrical engineer in designing proposed power systems or analyzing changes to existing systems, a digital computer program has been developed. This program will analyze alternating or direct-current networks with up to 10 voltage sources, 75 loads and 300 total segments. A maximum of nine levels of voltage is permitted in the system. This project was part of a package of programs developed at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (WI) for the mining industry under sponsorship of the Office of Coal Research. Included in this package are also programs to: 1. Schedule mine production and predict cost of mining 2. Simulate rail haulage systems 3. Simulate belt haulage systems 4. Analyze ventilation networks 5. Analyze pumping networks These programs are available from the Department of Mining Engineering, VPI, Blacksburg, Virginia 24061 for a nominal processing cost.

"The ore microscope and electron microprobe, two common instruments for academic research, have not been used to full advantage in the Canadian mining industry, perhaps because they are not readily available to most mining companies.The present paper gives a description of the two instruments and of the manner in which, when used together, they contribute to the identification and description of mineralogical and metallurgical samples, and reviews the applications, to . date, in the mineral industry.The metallurgical applications can assist in determining the best separation technique for a particular metal or other economically important element, can provide explanations for poor recovery and/or liberation, can be used to determine theoptimum concentrate grade and can indicate environmental problems that may arise from the extraction process.In certain cases, the use of the two instruments may assist in the evaluation of new mineral deposits and in the determination of the origin of mineralization.IntroductionThe ore microscope and electron microprobe, two widely used instruments in universities and other research institutions, have not been exploited to their full potential by the Canadian mining industry.High-magnification, high-resolution ore microscopes, owned by most Canadian universities and government mining branches, are not widely used by mining organizations. The situation is very much the same with the microprobe. The geology departments of several major Canadian universities have easy access to this instrument. Fifteen of them, to the author's knowledge, own one and a few have already acquired or are planning on acquiring a second and later model. The mining branches of the Canadian Government have similar easy access to microprobes, as at least four of these instruments are available to them in Ottawa alone. The mining companies, on the other hand, except for the few larger ones which have their own research laboratories, have not been able to take advantage of electron microprobes in the past.This failure to exploit good ore microscopes and electron microprobes has been mainly due to a lack of expertise in the use of the two instruments for the study of metallurgical problems related to ore mineralogy. Government institutions providing research and test work to the industry are few in number, and are not always equipped with these instruments or are not geologically-oriented. Information provided on a consulting basis by universities and by government mining branches is normally limited, and frequently is not oriented to the needs of the mining company."

In South Africa, diamonds are mined predominantly in rural areas. Kimberlitic diamonds dominate in Limpopo and the Northern Cape Provinces whereas alluvial diamonds are mainly sourced from the North West and Northern Cape Provinces. There are a few large and medium sized diamond companies (De Beers, Petra Diamonds, Trans Hex, Rockwell and Alexkor). There are many smaller companies involved in diamond mining, mostly alluvial diamond mines. The nature of alluvial diamond deposits is that they are aerially more extensive and thus their surface impacts are more pervasive: The recent downturn in diamond prices has resulted in the sudden cessation of mining at many small and medium diamond operations. The South African Mining Charter requires all mines, including diamond mines, to subscribe' to .the following empowerment objectives:
