Underground mining operations on Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile were suspended in 1976, suffering the combined effects of low gold prices and grades. A subsequent substantial increase in the gold price led to the decision by Kalgoorlie Mining Associates to reopen their mines in 1979. The two shafts selected for access required excessive maintenance. The geological assessment and development parameters prescribed have been successfully used to establish reserves to maintain production at a 390 000 tonnes per annum rate. While ore reserve grade is being maintained from primary stoping sources, supplementary lower grade ore is drawn from remnant pillars and stopes at lower cost.Performance by the workforce has reached levels previously attained and a record tonnage was hoisted in the fourth year after recommencement.Keywords : Golden Mile lodes, geological research, payruns, cut and fill, mill holes, gold price, ore grade, amalgamation.

The authors previously developed a methodology that combines injury and citation measures into an overall mine safety performance evaluation tool, called the safe performance index (SPI). It can be easily adopted by mine operators to monitor trends in their injury and citation experiences as a risk assessment method. In this paper, six normalized safety measures and the SPI are used to evaluate the health and safety risk that existed at mines in the two years preceding the occurrence of a fatality. The percentage of mines is given for which the risk was high or where trends of some of the safety measures indicated moderate risk. In 50% of the mines, this mine safety performance tracking method could have been helpful to the companies, state agency or the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in recognizing and addressing emerging problems with actions that may have been able to predict high-risk conditions, the fatality and/or other serious injuries. The approach would have given extra scrutiny to the risk for mines that encompassed 74% of the fatalities during 2007-2010.

Cortez Gold Mines operated a conventional 2,100 mtpd (2, 300 stpd) cyanidation plant until the 5 million ton ore body was worked out in 1973. (See Gold and Silver Cyanidation Plant Practice by F. W. McQuiston, Jr. and R. S. Shoemaker, Society of Mining Engineers, AIME 1975.) Sub-grade material was dump leached at the mine -mill location in 1971, and the resulting pregnant solutions were added to the feed in the plant's Merrill-Crowe precipitation unit for gold recovery. In early 1973, however, Cortez put into operation their Gold Acres mine which was located about 13 krn (8 miles) to the west of the 'Cortez mine. Economics at that time dictated the heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ore body with the higher grade being trucked to the Cortez plant for milling. Leach ore was moved directly from the open pits to prepared leach pads located on a gently sloping terrain of 570 grade. Preliminary pad preparation at the leach site included removal of vegetation which was composed of sagebrush and grading of the base. Pads were comprised of mostly minus 74 micron (200 mesh) materials and were made of clay-silt or slime tailings spread on the pad area in thin 50 to 75 mm (2 to 3 in. ) layers, compacted with a vibrating roller compactor to a depth of about 380 mm (15 in.). This was followed with a 100 mrn (4 in.) layer of coarse rock to prevent erosion on the pad and to allow solutions to move laterally under the heaps. Leach solutions normally traveled the length of the heaps and were collected in plastic-lined ditches from which they flowed by gravity to the pregnant solution storage pond. Both pregnant and barren ponds were constructed in the same manner as the leach pads - being lined with compacted tailings or clay silts. The Gold Acres facility required pregnant solution storage of 6 million liters (1.6 million gal) and barren storage of 3.8 million liters (1.0 million gal) designed to handle two to three days of heap drainage or to retain run-off from a major rainfall. Cyclones have been used successfully in the mineral industries to solve solid-liquid as well as solid-solid separation problems in the processing of fine particles. Substantial information is available about the operation of cyclones as thickeners, classifiers, and concentrators using a dense medium. However, very little is known about the operation of the cyclone as a fine coal concentrator not using dense medium. This application of the cyclone, namely to wash fine coal in water, requires that classification phenomena be minimized in order to arrive at an effective separation of the high density ash and sulfur-bearing mineral particles from the low density coal particles over a wide particle size range. The authors have investigated the role of feed pressure, orifice diameters, and vortex-finder length in the cyclone washing of fine coal (--1/4 in.) in water. The results of this investigation show that cyclone washing of fine coal in water is an effective unit operation particularly capable of reducing the inorganic pyritic sulfur content. The combination of hydrocyclones with complimentary equipment such as Sieve bends, shaking tables, and flotation units appears to be especially promising and may ultimately yield fine coal processing systems that could approximate the high recovery efficiencies of today's coarse coal cleaning circuits. In the future, fine coal beneficiation can be expected to receive even greater research emphasis as a result of increasing sulfur restrictions on all major coal markets. In a previous paper, work, conducted at the Pennsylvania State University, on the hydrocyclone washing of fine coal was discussed.' The initial evaluation based on that wo-rk demonstrated the feasibility of hydrocyclones as fine-coal cleaning devices, and in that previous paper selected test data were presented that showed in principle how product yield and assay respond to variations of the major cyclone operating variables. The present paper reports in greater detail on the findings and presents a comprehensive evaluation of the data as follows: (1) Hydrocyclone throughput rates were related to feed pressure and other variables by regression equations. These equations are compared with other capacity-vs.-pressure drop expressions taken from the literature on classification cyclones. (2) The flow ratio was found to be the most important variable for the separation of the solids. Control of this ratio through various cyclone operating parameters is discussed. (3) The data on the product yield as well as the ash and sulfur assays from the tests were evaluated by means of correlation and multiple regression analyses. Because size-classification phenomena cannot be suppressed completely in hydrocyclone washers, product yield and assay data are regressed against cyclone operating variables separately for different size classes. These equations then reveal how the interactions of the cyclone operating variables vary in terms of the separation for different size classes. (4) Density partitions from additional tests were analyzed by supplementing product-size analyses with sink-float analyses of the separated product size classes. The evaluation of these data show how classification phenomena affect separation by density. The results demonstrate in particular the feasibility of the hydrocyclone washer for removing pyritic sulfur from fine coal. In addition to these specific findings, the investigation points up the value, in general, of using hydrocyclone washers in combination with unit operations such as screening, table concentration, and flotation. In order to make optimum use of the hydrocyclone washers and work out the most effective combination of unit operations, it is important to have careful flowsheet analyses corresponding to the given feed and product requirements. Analyses of this kind are now possible by means of computer simulation of flowsheets and other operation research tools. The origin of gold both in placer deposits ancl in veins, and especially the origin of nuggets, has been the subject of repctated discussions and investigations, which have been recently brought to my attention by several extremely interesting specinlens sent to me for examination, and mare especially by the one exhibited at the meeting of the Institute in February, 1880.* In the year 1874 I made some exan~inations of the hydraulic mines of California, and was very nluoh struck with the distribution of the gold throughout these deep placers, which were almost invariably poor on'the surface, while gradually growing richer towards the bedrock. The constant presence of fossil wood, and the large quantity of organic matter contained even low down in these beds, was also remarkable. Not being satisfied with the various theories advanced to account for the formation of these deposits, I began an investigation early in the pear 1879 on the conditions of solubility of gold and the causes of the loss in working gold ore in a large way. The researclles which I have undertaken show that gold must be considered a soluble rather than an insoluble metal, and that the conditions of solution are such as will be found anywhere where gold is likely to occur, and the solution may take place even under the ordinary circumstuncee of surfiace drainage, and may be going on freely even where the presence of gold has never been suspected, and that there are causee enough in nature to produce the solution of the gold in sufficient quantities to account for all the phenomena of both the vein and placer formations. The general theory with regard' to the formation of these placer deposits and nuggets has been that they were the result of the deatruction of pre-existing. vein-matter, which does not accord with the fitcts as sholvn in the deep placer deposits. "Comparing with the single electrode in electroslag remelting processes, two series-connected electrodes have the advantage of little inductance, lower power consumption and higher melting rate, which was widely used to produce superalloys and specialty steels. Detailed understanding of the electromagnetic field distribution is essential for both improving ingot quality and saving electric energy. In the present work, a 3D finite element model was developed for the magnetic field, electromagnetic force, current density and Joule heating field of electro slag remelting processes (electrode, slag and ingot) with two series-connected electrodes using Maxwell equation, Lorentz law and Joule law. The results show that the maximum current distribute occur at the middle of electrode, due to the interaction of selfinduced and mutual-induced of two series-connected electrode; associated magnetic flux density on the inner side of electrode increase and the outer decrease; The maximum joule heating is at the interface of slag and electrode. The parameter study shows that if the current frequency is greater than 35Hz, the current density in inner electrode tend to linear distribution; with the increasing of original current, The maximum current density near the wall in electrode will increase linearly; with the increasing of electrode innnersion depth and decrease of slag cap thickness and the maximum of the joule heat in slag will increase.IntroductionElectroslag remelting processes(ESR) are widely used to produce superalloys and specialty steels [l-3l_Two pair, four pair or six pair electrodes in electroslag remelting processes is common in casting large scale ingot, which has the advantage of little inductance, lower power consumption and higher melting rate, comparing to singe electrode. They have the same essence with two electrodes in ESR.Compared to the single electrode ofESR, the other electrode is added which can decrease the reactive resistance and power consumption in the two electrodes of ESR. It is a complicated metallurgy process with a series physical and chemistry phenomenon from the molten of steel to the solidification of ingot [4-71_ These physical and chemistry phenomenon originated the effect of alternating current of high intensity. The rule of the alternating current of high intensity which revealed the law of physical and chemistry phenomenon in ESR is the precondition of improving ingot quality and saving electric energy. Jihe Wei and Yongli Ren[S-9lstudied the distribution of electromagnetic field in single electrode ofESR with Maxwell equation and relative electromagnetic theory. It had the limitation that take the electrode and mold as infinite conductivity. A detail analysis of Electromagnetic fields in ESR had been conducted by Patel A D [JO-llJ using general stream-function formulation. It is difficult to extend to three dimensions which could not be used widely. Daniel V [lZJ and Kharicha A [BJ only analysis the current density associated magnetic flux density field and temperature field without the whole irlformation of electromagnetic field. Maopeng Geng [l4J considered the current density and temperature field of the real and fake electrodes in ESR without skin effect. As to the complication of the two electrodes of ESR, it is rarely reported the electromagnetic field and Joule heating field of the two electrodes in ESR. The rule of effect of electromagnetic and modification of numerical simulation should be studied in depth."

The Athabasca tar sands of Alberta are an increasingly important source of crude oil for the North American continent. Published figures indicate estimates of recoverable resources in the tar sands at some 300 billion barrels of synthetic crude of which some 86 billion barrels can be recovered by surface mining techniques. At the present time, two commercial plants are in operation, Great Canadian Oil Sands Limited and Syncrude Canada Ltd. Their present combined capacity is approximately 150,000 barrels per day. Some of the factors which will make this oil expensive will be noted here. The location of the present producing plants is 500 kilometres north of Edmonton at an elevation of approximately 320 metres. Recorded temperatures range from +38 to -55 degrees Celsius. Wind velocities are not high but the chill factor with even a slight breeze and minus 40 degrees is very uncomfortable.

The object of this investigation was to determine the growth habit of bismuth and bisrrtuth alloy dendrites as a function of supercooling. To do this, techniques were developed to increase the amount of supercooling in bismuth and bismuth alloys. For pure bismuth, the growth habit was dependent on the amount of supercooling. At low amounts of supercooling, about 10" C, prismatic dendrites were obtained. With increased supercooling, about 20 C, a hopper growth habit was observed. In many cases where hopper growth had occurred, the hopper dendrites were twinned during the growth process. This twinned surface enable prismatic dendrites to nucleate and grow by a twin plane mechanism. When the amount of supercooling was increased to about 25 °C, the growth habit was a triplanar growth. With still greater supercooling, about 3s°C, a branched growth habit occurred. The exposed planes on the prismatic, hopper,, triplane, and branched dendrites have been determined. The growth habit of the dendrites which grew along the crucible wall was found to have the (111) as the exposed plane, with <211> growth direction. It is apparent that dendritic growth of a metal is dependent on its purity and the solidification variables present. One of the solidification variables is the degree of supercooling. Supercooling, although often observed, has not been studied extensively until recent years. For dendritic growth to occur in a pure metal, the metal must be thermally supercooled. After the dendrites grow into the supercooled melt, the heat of solidification raises the temperature of the specimen to the melting point of the material and the remaining liquid will solidify at this temperature. Decanting is the removal of this remaining liquid before complete solidification. This removal of the remaining liquid after recalescence had occurred is a great aid in the study of dendritic growth. In this investigation, decanting was accomplished by a vacuum-decanting technique . Other investigators1-5 have studied the growth characteristics of various low-melting-temperature pure metals and alloys as a function of supercooling. However, large degrees of supercooling were not included. For their study of dendritic growth of lead, Weinberg and chalmersl employed a decanting technique which was achieved by pouring off the remaining liquid, exposing the solid/liquid interface. This method was employed later by Weinberg and Chalmers2 for the investigation of tin and zinc dendrites. The method for obtaining a solid/liquid interface was improved by Chalmers and Elbaum. They employed a triggered spring which was attached to the solidifying section of the specimen. Upon activation, the spring jerked the solid interface away from the liquid melt. In the study of growth from the supercooled state, a metal of low melting point which exhibited a high degree of supercooling was desired. Bismuth gave very consistent supercooling when a stannous chloride flux was employed. The maximum supercooling obtained was 91°C, with an average supercooling of between 65" and 75°C. The consistency of supercooling greater than 50°C was very high. The use of vacuum to aid in the rapid decanting of molten metal has proven to be very successful in this investigation. The vacuum gives a rapid decantation, usually leaving the solidified metal structure sharply defined. The purpose of this investigation was to study the effects of supercooling and the effects of alloy additions on the growth habit of bismuth dendrites. The structure of bismuth has been variously defined as face-centered rhombohedral, primitive rhombohedral, and hexagonal. However, bismuth has only one plane with threefold symmetry, the (111) plane, and the crystal-lographic structure is considered a 3kn structure. MATERIALS The bismuth which was employed in this investigation was obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. of South Plainfield, N. J. The accompanying spectrographic analysis data indicated the bismuth to be 99.999+ pct pure. The tin was obtained from the Vulcan Materials Co., Vulcan Detinning Division, Sewaren, N. J. It was classified as "extra pure". Nominal analysis was 99.999+pct. In order to prevent contamination of the bismuth melt from the atmosphere, an anhydrous stannous chloride (Fisher certified reagent grade) was added to each melt. The fluxing action obtained from the use of the chloride provided a large amount of supercooling in the specimen. APPARATUS A 30-kw, 10,000-cps motor-generator set, connected to a 6+-in.-diam air induction coil, was employed to melt and superheat the specimens. The temperatures were recorded by means of a chromel-alumel thermocouple and a potentiometric recorder. The thermocouples were 0.003 in. in diam, and were encapsulated with Pyrex glass to prevent the thermocouple from acting as a nucleating agent and also from contaminating the melt. Fig. 1 illustrates the vacuum-decanting apparatus when a liquid flux was employed. A standard 30-ml Pyrex beaker was placed on top of an asbestos insulating block. A 5-mm-ID Pyrex tube with aA-in. spacer tip attached to its end was used for the decanting tube. The spacer tip contributed significantly to a successful decanting operation. The object of this paper is to describe the several necessary characteristics of the zinc-retorting charge and to show how by certain improved methods, the large excess of coal, over that theoretically required, can be reduced, thereby effecting an increase in the smelting capacity of a retort plant as well as other economies. In the southwestern zinc works a charge of roasted zinc ore with a side mixture of carbonates and silicates, analyzing on the average 50 per cent. Zn, is mixed with 55 or more per cent. of its weight of a mixture of coal and coke analyzing 60 to 70 per cent. fixed carbon. The ore is of varying fineness and the coal and coke are usually crushed in a semi-moist condition through a 3/8-in. screen. With ores of a slaggy nature, this coal proportion is increased, sometimes to as much as 100 per cent. of the weight of the ore. With carbonate ores, or where anthracite screenings with higher carbon content are cheap enough, the percentage of reducing agent is cut to 45 per cent. or even somewhat lower. The average charge per retort for a monthly run of a plant on ore, as distinguished from retorts on blue-powder, ladle-skimmings and other between-products, runs from 60 to 66 lb., with a mean of 63 lb. for the Southwest with standard retorts of 8 1/2-in. inside diameter and 50 in. long inside, using roasted sulphide ores. Conditions will change these figures, but 40 lb. of ore per cubic foot of retort space is, I believe,&apos;an average in the better-operated plants. Since the rise in the price of spelter, the tendency has been to overcharge. To remove the slag that is formed when retorts are overcharged, extra men are put on to "gum-chisel" the retorts to prevent "set" furnaces and "butchered retorts." Taking the above conditions as premises, we find that from four to six times the amount of coal necessary for the reduction is used, as is evidenced by the fact that the residues analype as high as 35 per cent, fixed carbon. There are good reasons why this excess of fixed carbon must be used and perhaps these can be best explained by a description of the metallurgical requisites of a zinc charge. At the Washoe smelter, Anaconda, Mont., the blister-copper from the converters is transferred, by means of a crane, to a re-fining-furnace, in which it is brought to proper pitch by means of air and poles. From this furnace the refined copper, containing gold and silver, is poured into cast-iron molds placed on a platform-convejor, giving an anode 36.75 in. long, 35 in. wide, and 2 1/16 in. thick. By reason of a disagreement between the smelter and the refinery, in reference to the silver-content of the anodes, it becanle necessary to investigate the methods of sampling used. 11. SMelter Method of SampliNg. At the smelter the sampling is done by " shotting " into water a small portion of the molten stream of copper as it flows from the furnace, by " batting " the stream&apos;with a wooden paddle. The first sample is taken 30 min. after the pouring i.: started, three other samples being taken at 1-hr. interrals, each sample Weighing from 4 to 6 oz. The samples are dried, esamined for particles of burnt wood, screened on a 10-mesh screen of NO. 8 wire to remove the fines, the oversize then screened on a 4-mesh screen of No. 20 wire to remore the coarse, the undersize of this screen being taken as the sample. The four portions thus obtained are thoroughly mixed and split in half by passing over a 16-slot splitting-device, slots being 0.5 in. wide. This is the first publication in a projected series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels pursuant to a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The report gives results of analyses in oil-company laboratories of sample of gasoline obtained from service-station pumps in 18 marketing areas by representatives of oil companies. These companies obtained the samples and analyzed them for their own information and supplied data from their laboratory reports to the Bureau of Mines for compilation and publication. AFTER six years of war-enforced idleness, Cyprus copper mines are operating again. This relatively long shutdown seems infinitesimal when compared with something like seventeen hundred years of inactivity that followed the important operations of the ancient Romans, and continued until the twentieth century. The historical records of the ancient operators are scarce but full of interest to those who realize that Cyprus copper production was important more than two thousand years ago. This paper, however, will give only a brief review of the ancient history and the evidence of ancient mining which have been quite fully covered in other publications.1-6 The purpose of this paper is to give a general sketch of the Cyprus Mines Corporation&apos;s enterprise in the Island of Cyprus, with special emphasis on those conditions and practices which are unusual. The picture is not intended to be complete, and many interesting details will be omitted. Some of these may be described in subsequent papers covering departmental practices. The principal operations of Cyprus Mines Corp. are in Cyprus, where it has leasehold concessions from the Cyprus Government covering about 50 square miles. It holds additional areas under "Prospecting Permits." The consideration for the concessions is a royalty on production, coupled with minimum annual rentals. Cyprus is a British Colony in the Eastern end of the Mediterranean with an area of about 3000 square miles and a population of about 400,000, of which 65 pct may be classed as Greeks on the basis of language, religious training, and traditions. About 25 pct are Moslems, principally of Turkish extraction. Prevailing languages are Greek and Turkish. A large proportion of the supervisory and administrative staff and practically all of the skilled and unskilled craftsmen and laborers are drawn from the native population. The "overseas" staff constitutes not more than 2 pct of the employees. The majority of these are from the United Kingdom, the British Dominions and Colonies. About one-third are from the United States of America. The topography of the Island is rugged, with mountains and foothills covering more than two-thirds of the area. Between the Kyrenea range rising to 3000-ft elevation, along the north coast, and the Troodos range (maximum elevation 6400 ft) occupying the southwest half of the Island, lies a cultivated rolling plain, the "Mesaoria," dry in summer and watered only by the winter rains and by scanty irrigation from small mountain streams and wells in the spring and summer. Climate and natural vegetation are characteristic of semi-arid conditions. The "urban" population, about one-fourth of the total, lives in the five port towns, Famagusta, Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos and Kyrenia, and in the capitol Nicosia, near the center of the Island. The suburban population lives almost entirely in villages or small towns, with very few people residing in isolated country homes.

Single crystals of tantalum, tungsten, and the binary alloys thereof were grown by electron-beam zone melting and tested in tension between 77° and 373°K. The ductile-to-brittle transition temperature increased sharply with solute concentration, for both tungsten-rich and tantalum-rich alloys; apparently, the maximum transition temperature exists near the 50 pet concentration. Twinning was observed to be a consequence of cleavage-crack propagation. Cleavage occurred on(100)planes, and extensive tearing and "river markings" were present. The onset of brittleness could not be associated with any change in deformation mode, the yield point phenomenon, or the large rise in yield stress with decreasing temperature. Cleavage was observed to initiate at either the specimen surface, or subgrain boundaries. The observation was made that the grain boundaries of Polycrystalline materials are probably even better as nucleation sites for fracture, and are responsible for brittleness at high temperatures and lower solute concentrations than those of the corresponding single crystals. TUNGSTEN and tantalum, the two high-melting neighbors in the third transition period of the periodic table, present striking contrasts. Although both are bee, tungsten has far higher elastic moduli, and the highest ductile-to-brittle transition (DBT) of all the pure metals.&apos; Tantalum, however, is ductile at liquid helium temperatures. Large strain aging and yield point phenomena are observed in tantalum,2,3 but only to a lesser extent in tungsten.4 Tungsten work-hardens at a high rate,5 whereas this effect is negligible in tantalum.&apos; Since the mutual solid solubility of these two metals is complete,7 and no ordering has yet been reported in the binary system, the possibility of depressing tungsten&apos;s DBT by tantalum additions was considered. Also, tungsten additions to tantalum could produce hard, high-melting alloys which might be ductile at room temperature. Such alloys offered excellent bases for complex alloy development, particularly with regard to the effect of rhenium on Group VI metals.8"10 In addition, there was the opportunity to examine flow and fracture modes in the vicinity of the DBT, with particular emphasis on the correlation between brittleness and fundamental deformation mechanisms. Myers11 has reported that recrystallized alloys with up to 10 pet W in tantalum are ductile at room temperature, but alloys with 20 pct W could not be swaged at temperatures as high as 500°C. The whole spectrum of Ta-W alloys has been surveyed by Braun, Sedlatschek, and Kiefferl2 using sintered powder compacts. In addition to some physical properties they reported a maximum hardness at about 50 at. pet W, dropping to much lower hardness levels for the pure components. They were able to cold work tantalum-base alloys with as much as 30 pet W and to warm work tungsten-base alloys with up to 20 pet Ta by procedures similar to those used for pure tungsten. EXPERIMENTAL In order to study deformation modes and to keep the impurity concentrations at a minimum, electron-beam zone melting was used to prepare single crystals of high purity. The electron-beam zone melting apparatus is similar to that described by Calverley, Davis, and ever" and incorporates a grid control rectifier to maintain control of emission current. Pure metals were refined by making three zone passes at 4 mm per min up the rod. Alloys were prepared by melting together wire of one constituent on a previously melted rod of the major constituent. Subsequently, two zone passes were made in opposite directions to level the composition after the manner suggested by pfann.14 Purification of the starting materials was accomplished by evaporation of the several impurities, and the degree to which this was accomplished is indicated in the chemical analyses of Table I. During the last decade there were pronounced changes in the competitive pattern of the fossill fuels It is proposed to trace these trends and describe inter-fuel competition, first as it relates to the economy as a whole and then more specifically to examine competition of the fossil fuels as these share the electric utility market. Table 1, Competitive Fuels and Water Power Used in the United States, 1950-1959, shows the growth in the consumption of coal, oil, gas and water power &apos;during the past decade. Uses which are not directly competitive among the fuels, such as tractor fuel, carbon black, and consumption of petroleum products in the making of synthetic rubber, have been excluded from these statistics. The experience of the three fossil fuels in competition since 1950 shows natural gas expanding more rapidly, than oil by roughly twice as much, 219.0 percent&apos; compared to 124.1 percent growth in B.t.u.s of oil consumed in the ten-year period. Percentagewise, water power little more than held its own, and coal, including anthracite, actually decreased more than one-fifth.

INTRODUCTION A BRIEF elemental discussion of the fundamental factors involved in diamond drilling often fills a need, particularly when a mine operator is contemplating for the first time an exploratory drilling campaign. Mr. James A. Barr, of the Mining Methods Committee of the Institute, has suggested that many engineers must undertake a drilling program of one kind or another and, in the case of diamond drilling, sometimes even are at a loss as to how to start correspondence. The Bureau of Mines has acquired much experience in managing exploratory diamond-drilling activities. Its activities in diamond drilling included exploring for potash in Texas, Utah and New Mexico 1-4 during the 1920&apos;s. The Strategic Minerals Exploration program was started in 1939 and was materially expanded during the war to include critical and essential minerals. At the peak of its war-time activity more than 200 engineers were employed, a majority of whom supervised diamond drilling. Many of them had little experience with such work prior to their employment with the Bureau, and it was necessary to instruct them in their duties. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to present the fundamentals of exploratory diamond drilling from the viewpoint of management in such a way that they will serve as a basis on which those beginning exploratory diamond drilling may build an experience and acquire ability to direct exploration as they gain that experience. SELECTION OF METHOD OF DRILLING Selection of the method of drilling is governed by the type of material to be penetrated and by the type of sample needed to determine the quality and importance of a deposit. Types of drills that might be used for a given job include diamond drills, churn drills, hand auger drills, power auger drills, bucket drills, and rotary drills (sometimes called "seismograph rigs"). Each type has a specific field in which it is most useful. While the Bureau of Mines utilized all the types of drilling mentioned, diamond drilling was used on a majority of its exploratory projects. FACTORS GOVERNING SELECTION OF DIAMOND DRILLING The prime consideration in selecting a method of drilling is first to determine what results are desired and then to choose a method that will furnish reliable data in the ground to be penetrated. Use of diamond drills permits recovery of a core as well as sludge at a comparatively low cost. "Fine powder of tantalum is used as materials of electric condenser. It is important to control the distribution of particle diameter of tantalum fine powders for the commercial use. In this study, fine powders of tantalum were produced by reducing tantalum chloride vapor with hydrogen gas at 1673 and 1773K. The tantalum chloride vapor was reduced with hydrogen and the produced fine particles of tantalum were collected to observe the distribution of particle diameter. The effects of reaction temperature, partial pressure of hydrogen gas and vaporization temperature of tantalum chloride on the distribution of particle diameter and reaction efficiency of reduction were determined. The mechanism of reduction reaction of tantalum was discussed.IntroductionThe ultra fine powder shows various different physical properties from that of bulk materials. Therefore, the application of ultra fine powder to various fields such as magnetic material, electric material, catalyst, etc is anticipated. The control of shape of powder, size distribution, property of agglomeration, purity is required for the practical use of ultra fine powder. Although the ultra fine powders of ceramics are produced by various methods, the ultra fine powder of metals are produced by the evaporation in gas atmosphere, plasma evaporation process, chemical vapor deposition process, and reduction and precipitation in liquid phase depending on the metal and productivity. Large quantities of combustible materials are often found in underground metal and nonmetal mines, with support timber predominating. Wood lagging and timber, wires and cables, brattice cloth, hose, paper products, cardboard cartons, and wooden containers are additional combustible materials commonly found in underground storage areas. Shorted or overloaded electrical cables, worn sockets and plugs, spontaneous combustion, careless smoking, and welding and cutting are common fire ignition sources. Inexpensive, reliable fire detection and suppression systems are available to provide early warning and to extinguish fires that originate in underground storage areas.

Computer-assisted data storage and retrieval in the geosciences is coming of age. A growing awareness of the need of the geological and mining community for effective access to existing data has triggered studies and development programs on many levels; governments, professional societies, industrial concerns, and the academic world are all active in this field. Developments in the past decade in computer hardware and software lend hope to the geoscientist searching for a means of expediting the flow of data. The new concern of the earth sciences coming together with the blossoming child of technology, computing, has led to serious study of the geoscience information problem. Active system development is under way in several areas. The papers presented at this Symposium effectively sample the spectrum of present day activity in machine-based geologic data storage and retrieval. These papers show the reader where the action is in this field today. Both long-range studies and plans and operational systems are discussed. Several studies and research efforts have been undertaken on a national or international scale. Robinson discusses the activity of the international geological community in these Proceedings. He speaks from a position of authority as Chairman of the International Union of Geological Sciences&apos; Committee on Storage, Automatic Processing and Retrieval of Geological Data. A study of a "coordinated information program for geological scientists in the United States" documented by Smith, et al.1 proposes a "long-range information program ... responsive to the entire geosciences community . . . (to) draw on the best of large-scale information systems technology." The European geologic community is embarked on project Geosemantica 70, started at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines de Paris. Dixon discusses some results of this work in a following paper. The Canadian study of geological data storage and retrieval on a national scale is reported in a volume edited by Brisbin and Ediger.2 The Canadian report presents detailed recommendations for recording and coding geologic data for automatic process-
