Xstrata Tintaya S.A. opera el yacimiento a tajo abierto y procesa el mineral en dos plantas: Planta Concentradora de Sulfuros y Planta de Lixiviación de Óxidos, donde anteriormente consideraba al mineral mixto complejo como intratable en la planta concentradora, por lo que se le destinó a ser tratado como óxido marginal en la planta de lixiviación. En este sentido, el presente texto describe el nuevo tratamiento al mineral complejo en la planta concentradora. De forma que se busca definir las variables geometalúrgicas del mineral de Chabuca Norte, optimizar los procesos metalúrgicos del mineral mixto mediante la investigación geometalúrgica, así como correlacionar el entendimiento de la geología y alteraciones del yacimiento con los procesos metalúrgicos y crear valor mediante la optimización de la tasa de tonelaje de tratamiento y el incremento del porcentaje de recuperación de cobre en el proceso.

Abstract A division of part of the Canadian Shield into provinces believed to represent former mountain belts is attempted, special emphasis- being laid upon radioactive age determinations, the relation of Archaean to Proterozoic rocks, and the structure of the Grenville province. Original data on the distribution of radioactivity within several batholiths and their connection with ore deposits are' presented. The possible growth of continents and a theory which explains the shape and distribution of the world's younger mountain and island areas are discussed and applied to the Canadian Shield in an attempt to explain how the growth and present structure came about. The relation of the major mining camps of northeastern Ontario to fault zones is discussed in the light of this theory. Introduction The valuable symposium issued by this Institute to celebrate its jubilees emphasizes the important role of major faults in determining the location of many ore deposits in the Canadian Shield. Many of these faults are known to extend for long distances. It is therefore widely appreciated that it would be of great value if the pattern, ages, and causes of these faults were better understood. This would be particularly useful if the relations of the major fault systems to petrological and metallogenic provinces and to former mountain belts could be established. Each year the volume of available data, and hence the chance of reaching a fuller solution of this problem, increases. This article is a review of the present situation. It is accordingly based almost wholly upon the work and ideas of others, which are gratefully acknowledged. Naturally, responsibility for the selection and marshalling of the data is the writer's.

New Afton mine is an 11,000 tonne per day block caving operation, located 8 km west of the city of Kamloops, British Columbia. Due to the nature of block caving and the weak rock mass at New Afton, the mine has faced and overcome many blasting challenges during its ramp-up to commercial production. As New Afton Mine continues to grow the demand for drill and blast precision has continued to grow as well; any misstep incurs delays in achieving full production capacity. The block cave mining method used at New Afton employs single-shot draw-bells, fired with very little void and blind undercutting, allowing little margin for error. New Afton has made continuous improvements to its blasting strategy by reacting quickly to real-time problems and employing sustainable, repeatable solutions to overcome its unique blasting requirements. Examples of these solutions include: increasing blast hole diameter, casing production drill holes, developing pre-loading procedures and developing strategies for remotely blasting under-broken remnants in both draw-bells and undercutting. Increasing the blast hole diameter has alleviated initial problems with hole plugging in the highly jointed rock mass at New Afton. This has reduced drill-cleaning time significantly and enabled New Afton to meet blasting targets. PVC hole casing was trialed when blasting in extremely fractured ground, where drill holes continually plugged. The casing allowed the drill holes to remain open long enough to load and blast. Calculations were carried out in order to achieve the same explosive energy in the cased holes as a typical blast. Results were generally positive, but more testing is required. Production flexibility and scheduling reliability have been maintained at New Afton by developing a pre-loading procedure for the production undercutting. In doing so, New Afton has been able to keep productivity high by having a flexible production schedule that is not reliant on a specific piece of equipment or production drive to remain productive; this flexibility is because the mucking of undercut material can occur at any stage of the drill/blast/muck cycle. New Afton has developed a strategy for blasting remnant under-break in its draw-bells and undercutting by remotely drilling holes near to the under-broken section and then loading the toes of these holes with emulsion, the remainder of the hole is then filled with grout. The holes are grouted in order to prevent damage to permanent pillars between draw-bells (where the majority of the recovery holes need to be located). Several critical areas were recovered using this technique with little to no damage to the remaining permanent pillars. Innovative blasting solutions have allowed New Afton to overcome obstacles in order to become a producing operation. Moving forward, New Afton looks to continue its trend of innovative drilling and blasting techniques when faced with out of the ordinary situations.

IN this paper I propose to describe a plant which I lately erected for the Mount Stewart Lead and Silver Mining Company of Leadville, New South Wales, Australia. I am indebted to Mr. W. F. Burrow, of the Roads and Bridges Department of New South Wales, for the drawings which I present herewith, he having reduced and assembled them from my working drawings. The works are situated on a sloping hillside, but sufficient fall mas not available to have the furnace as high as desired, and at the same time have a good slag-tip and sufficient depth on the ore-floor to store a supply of ore and flux. The ore is delivered on the ore-floor (which is of the full width of the furnace-building, and extends back into the hill a distance of seventy feet) by two overhead tramways (not shown in the drawings), one on each side. From these the ore-mixture is made up on one side, while it is being taken to the furnace from the other. The fuel also is delivered by these tramways. The fluxes are stored on a floor directly at the back of the boiler and engine room. The boiler is a Cornish one, 6 feet 6 inches in diameter by 25 feet long. Its flue is 3 feet in diameter and does not contain Galloway tubes. The working-pressure is 40 pounds per square inch. The engine is an old-fashioned one, with a cylinder 16 inches in diameter by 30 inches stroke. Both the engine and boiler had been part of the plant of a defunct gold-mining company. They were very extravagant in their consumption of fuel. The blast is supplied by a rotary pressure-blower, of the Baker pattern, made in England. It has a capacity of 60 cubic feet per revolution. The furnace, which has several novel points, is shown in detail in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The jackets are of cast-iron, and are higher than those generally used. They are different, too, in that the feedwater inlet is through a hand-hole plate near the bottom. This plate is fastened to the jacket by stud-bolts, and is provided with a baffleplate, which prevents the cooling water from impinging against the inner plate. This paper compares response of large urban structures to small charge weight, ultra-high frequency rock blast excitation from contiguous excavation to that of houses to more distant, larger charge weight blasts. Time correlated responses were measured for both structures at the corners, top and bottom of the structures as well as in the foundation rock below the bottom. The comparison allowed the following conclusions: Close-in blasting with direct rock to building wave transmission imposes short wave length excitation which fails to excite the large, massive structures synchronously whereas the more distant blasts do synchronously excite houses. The larger urban structures respond predominantly in wave transmission mode where there is a noticeable difference in time, frequency, phase and amplitude of motions measured at the bottom and top corners of the structure. Excitation motions along the base of the larger urban structures also differs in time, frequency, phase and ampli-tude. The short wave length of the excitation motions leads to attenuation of the peak particle veloc-ity along the base. Ultra-high excitation frequencies, which are much higher than the expected struc-tural natural frequencies, lead to deamplification for all events for the large urban structures.

The chapter describes how several OR techniques assisted the planning of a major new UR project. A computer system was developed to analyze reserves distribution and potential of possible underground layouts, to assist in choosing the location and size of access points. Manpower requirements of each proposed working plan were assessed and matched with the potential recruitment of skilled and unskilled labor. Computer simulations were used to determine the optimum capacity for coal preparation plant and surface bunkerage. For the overall assessment of robustness, financial modelling and risk analysis techniques were adapted to the special requirements of new mines.

Wetlands can be constructed inexpensively on mined lands to treat small flows of acid mine water. Metals are removed from the water by the wetland vegetation and indigenous bacteria. Full-scale field tests initiated at over 20 mine sites during 1984 and 1985 indicate that water quality can be upgraded to meet discharge standards with relatively minor maintenance requirements. Iron concentrations of 25-85 mg/L in the influent water fall to less than 2 mg/L during flow through a small wetland. Manganese can also be removed, though somewhat less efficiently. At the discharge, pH is easily raised to 6 by flow over limestone.

A study of the orientations and microstructure of 3 pct Si Fe alloys after deformation and recrystallization has been made. The components found after deformation agreed with recently published work on single crystals, being primarily (001) [110], (111) [110], and (111) {112}. A pronounced effect of temperature of recrystalliza-tion was found on microstructure and orientation. Low temperature recrystallization was interpreted in terms of low angle boundaries which resulted in the retention of a large amount of the deformation texture. High temperature recrystallization was interpreted in terms of high angle boundaries which gave rise to new components. No simple angular relation between the deformation and high temperature recrystalliza-tion textures could be detected. DEFORMATION and recrystallization behavior of 3 pct Si-Fe has been the subject of scientific investigation for many years. The fact that it is a single phase body-centered-cubic alloy from room temperature to the melting point permits study over a wide range of temperature without the complications of phase transformations. There is an important commercial interest in this material as well, since it is widely used in the electrical industry. In the present work the deformation and recrystallization behavior of poly crystal line silicon iron has been studied with the primary purpose of evaluating the effect of a second phase impurity on both processes as well as the effect of temperature on the recrystallization characteristics. Networks of resistors are used as analog computers to obtain relative permeability and resistivity index curves for networks of tubes. These curves have all of the characteristics of those obtained on porous media and, therefore demonstrate the validity of the network of tubes model. INTRODUCTION In paper I' of this series the network model was shown to give information on the structure of porous media that could not be obtained from the bundle of tubes model. The agreement between the capillary pressure characteristics of a network of tubes and those of typical porous media does not prove the validity of the network made. The bundle of tubes model, although it gives less information, also shows this agreement. In this paper the flow properties of a network of tubes are shown to be in agreement with flow properties of porous media. The flow properties of the bundle of tubes model are not in adequate agreement with those of porous media. The dynamic properties of porous media, such as fluid permeability and electrical conductivity, have been found experimentally to be more sensitive functions of structure and pore size distribution than are the static properties such as porosity and capillary pressure characteristics. The network model can, therefore, be best tested by comparing the dynamic properties of a network of tubes with the observed properties of porous media. All static and dynamic properties of a completely valid model must agree with the observed properties. The most commonly measured sensitive dynamic properties are the relative fluid permeability and the relative electrical resistivity. Experimental measurements of these dynamic properties on sandstone, sintered glass, sintered alumina, and soil are reported in the petroleum and soil science literature. These properties were chosen, therefore, for the test of the network model. In the network model, relative permeability is the permeability of the network when some of the tubes are not conducting fluid, relative to the permeability when all tubes are conducting fluid. Similarly, the relative resistivity is the electrical resistivity of the network of tubes when some of the tubes are filled with a nonconductor. relative to the resistivity when all tubes are filled with the electrical conducting fluid. Single Size Tube Network The simplest porous medium is one in which all pores are of the same size. Such media can be approached by packing beds or columns of uniform size particles of sand, glass, or metal. The model of such medium in this study is a network of single size tubes. "A significant variation of strength was noted in silicon nitride ceramics made through the powder compaction processing with minor processing changes. The relevance of the fracture strength to the microstructure was examined in these ceramics. In the examination of microstructure, the ceramics were made into thinned specimens, and their internal structures were observed with an optical microscope in the transmission mode. This technique can distinguish a difference in microstructure associated with the minor processing changes. The strength of all ceramics examined in this experiment was qualitatively correlated with the -pore size distribution in the specimens. Clearly, the elimination of these detrimental defects will enhance the reliability of ceramics.IntroductionIn ceramics made through powder processing, a variation of properties is often encountered [l ,2]. This brings a major problem on producing reliable and cost-effective ceramics. The variation is often ascribed to the changes in the characteristics of defects. However, there is no clear evidence f\)r this explanation due to the lack of an adequate tool for identifying the defects determining the properties. Details of the origin of the variation have still been poorly understood.A new technique is very promising for clarifying the origin of the variation [3,4]. This has very high potential in detecting minor differences in structure for .engineering ceramics. With this technique, ceramics are made transparent with its thinning down to about 50 µ m and their internal structures are observed with various types of optical microscopes in the transmission mode. The characteristics of the defects determined through this approach were found to be directly related to the strength of the ceramics [4-6].The objective of this study is to clarify the ongm of fracture strength of silicon nitride ceramics. This material is representative of high performance ceramics, and the origin is of great practical interest. For this study, silicon nitride ceramics with minor changes in processing condition were prepared. Specific feature focused in this study is the difference of large pore structure determined with the new technique and its relevance to the strength of the silicon nitride ceramics."

Two suites of dusts (waste-heat boiler and electrostatic precipitator) collected in 1976 and 1980 from the Kalgoorlie nickel smelter were subjected to chemical and XRD analysis and were examined by SEM and optical microscopy. The spherical to sub-spherical particles contained oxide and glassy phases with small amounts of sulfide. XRD showed that the major phase was a mixed Ni-Fe oxide spinel with some hematite. These phases compared well with those predicted by thermodynamics. The particle size distributions showed that in the 1976 and 1980 suites 20 per cent by weight was respectively coarser than 60 and 115/lm (boiler dusts) and 40 and 30/lm (precipitator dusts). Maximum particle sizes estimated from sedimentation chamber theory were found to be in reasonable agreement with the maximum sizes found in the dusts.

The river- or dredge-coal industry of Pennsylvania is conducted on many of the rivers and creeks that drain the Pennsylvania anthracite fields. Coal thus recovered found its way into the streams as coal was being prepared for market by the anthracite industry proper, in the northeastern part of the State. The Principal rivers draining; the fields, those where dredging is taking place, are the Susquehanna, Schuylkill, and Lehigh. Several creeks - the Shamokin, Mahanoy, Wiconisco, and Swatara - also are productive sources of river or creek coal. Operations along the streams cover a wide territory, and along the Susquchanna alone; dredges are recovering coal for about 160 miles. Anthracite was a significant factor in the early industrial development of the United States. Industry used it to generate steam, and railroads used it as fuel for locomotives; but it probably was most important industrially in the smelting of iron ore. For more than a hundred years homes have been heated with this fuel. From the beginning of mining in 1807, to 1940, more than 4 billion net tons of anthracite had been prepared and shipped to market. In the preparation process much of the smaller-size coal and refuse found their way into rivers and creeks which carried the material many miles. This study is concerned with the recovery of that anthracite from those rivers and creeks.

Historical In the course of a paper which is necessarily limited in length, such as the present one, it is obviously impossible to describe in detail the history, development, and present position of coal preparation in Western Europe. Great Britain has been blessed with large deposits of excellent coal of nearly every type, ranging from the high-grade anthracites of South Wales, which are characterised by their very low ash and volatile con-tents, to the superb coking coals of South Wales and Durham -probably the finest in the world -with their low ash and sulphur contents, the latter constituent often well be-low l per cent. Gas coals abound in Lancashire and Yorkshire, while coals from the East Midlands, Northumberland, and Scotland are excellent for steam-raising and other industrial purposes. The excellent quality of these various coals has, in years gone by, ensured ready .sales abroad and it is not surprising, therefore; that methods of coal preparation were largely developed on the Continent in an endeavour to upgrade the inferior fuels found there, so that the prepared product could compete with British coals on the European market.

The Altair Hydrochloride Pigment Process is a new ?third route?, besides the established high-temperature chloride process and the older sulfate process, to manufacture TiO2 pigment from ilmenite ore. It has been tested at a scale of 5 t/day feed. The ore concentrate is digested in high-acid, high total chloride solution (+/- 39% Cl). Titanium and iron both go into solution. Iron is separated as FeCl2 crystals after reduction and cooling. Titanium is transferred by solvent extraction into a purified, high-Ti stream. It is spray-hydrolyzed to produce a TiO2 hydrate and further calcined with additives into high-quality pigment. HCl solutions generated by pyrohydrolysis and spray hydrolysis are treated by pressure-swing distillation to regenerate HCl gas for re-injection into the digestion reactor. All chloride streams are recycled. Recent work has concentrated on optimization, particularly in 3 areas: - Solvent extraction: a new organic mixture, including a new diluent, makes it possible to work at room temperature, to avoid TiO2 hydrolysis problems and to improve phase disengagement and impurity separation. - Pigment finishing: a systematic study of the parameters involved, followed by long runs in the best conditions confirm pigment quality. - Flow sheet optimization: innovative modifications of the conditions of spray hydrolysis and pyrohydrolysis, combined with re-routing of streams achieve significant energy savings. A 100 t/year pilot plant including these features as well as other process improvements is under construction.

"Besshi-type Cu-Zn (-Ag-A u ± Co) deposits are tabular, stratiform volcanogenic sulphide bodies which are usually associated with mafic volcanic rocks of oceanic or intra-plate geochemistry, but which can also be found locally with ultramafic volcanics or subvolcanic mafic intrusions. A thick sequence of continentally-derived clastic sediment usually encloses both the mafic volcanics and the ore. Besshi-type deposits form subaqueously, in epicratonic rifting environments, more-or-less proximally, and as a result of hydrothermal convection in their subjacent mafic volcanic - clastic sedimentary piles. They belong to a rift -related metallogenic spectrum that includes sediment-hosted and Cyprus-type base metal deposits, and may diller genetically from these mainly with respect to rate and degree of crustal extension. Modern analogues to these deposits are f ound in the submarine volcanogenic sinters of the Gulf of California rift system.The associated lithologies and tectonic selling of Besshi-type deposits clearly distinguish them from Kuroko-type ores. This difference also seems to be reflected in their lead isotopic character. For example, leads from Besshi-type deposits in the Sanbagawa belt of Japan and from the Blue Ridge belt of southeastern U.S.A. lie on extended anomalous lead lines and have lowslopes in 207Pb/204 Pb - 206Pb/ 204 Pbspace (Sato and Sasaki, 1980; Leriuray, 1982), wheras those from most Kurokotype mining districts exhibit only narrow isotopic ranges and lie near or on the orogene growth curve (e.g. , Franklin et a I., 1981). More over, where Besshi- and Kuroko-type deposits are found in the same orogene, the former often occur earlier in the tectonic cycle than the tatter (e.g., Japan, the Norwegian Caledonides, the southern Appalachians and south-central Finland).Besshi-type deposits are not confined to any particular part of the world, or to any geological epoch. Moreover, in many mineralized belts, Besshi-type deposits are the predominant volcanogenic ore type. On a world-wide scale, deposits of this type therefore constitute an important base metal resource."

Systematic sampling, in reconnaissance fashion, of the continental shelves of the United States to define favorable areas of offshore mineral deposits, is one of the long-range marine mineral; programs of the U.S. Department of the Interior. In mid-1966 the Department of the Interior launched its Heavy Metals Program to stimulate domestic output of gold which is in serious short supply. The program is jointly conducted by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines.

The passive interception and in situ treatment of groundwater using permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) has, within the past decade, become an accepted remedial approach to the control of plumes containing dissolved organic and inorganic contaminants. Since the first applications of the technology in the early-1990s, there have been several field-scale PRBs that have provided excellent treatment of dissolved metals in groundwater. Additional commercial applications and demonstration projects continue to be developed. Three field-scale applications and supporting laboratory columns have shown that several thousands of milligrams per litre of sulfate, more than 1000 mg/L iron, and several tens of milligrams per litre of other metals can be removed from groundwater by PRBs that promote sulfate reduction. The reactive materials, which incorporate various forms of organic carbon, promote microbially mediated sulfate reduction, the generation of hydrogen sulfide, and the subsequent precipitation of sparingly soluble iron and other metal sulfide minerals. Effective performance has been achieved by PRBs installed at a mine-tailings impoundment in 1995 (Sudbury, Ontario) and at an industrial facility (Vancouver, British Columbia). These PRBs have removed iron and other metals from groundwater. Similar materials were also used to create reactive layers within test cells directly in a tailings impoundment in 1999 (Timmins, Ontario) with the objective of removing iron and sulfate from the pore water before it migrates from the tailings impoundment. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) has been shown to provide excellent removal of chromium (VI) in a PRB, which was installed at the US Coast Guard facility in Elizabeth City in 1996, by reduction and precipitation reactions. Laboratory tests have also shown that ZVI reduces As(V) to As(III), which is subsequently removed from solution by co-precipitation with iron oxyhydroxides. In groundwater containing sulfate, ZVI and mixtures containing organic carbon can promote sulfate reduction and the subsequent precipitation of sparingly soluble arsenic and other metal sulfides. A trial PRB system was installed in 2001 and was shown to attenuate arsenic and other electroactive metals in groundwater at an industrial facility in northwestern Ontario. Basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag, a waste material generated by the steel industry, has shown excellent potential for the removal of phosphate, elements such as arsenic and water-borne pathogens from groundwater in field and laboratory tests.

This Bureau of Mines report deals with water infusion of coalbeds, which can control methane emission at face areas during developmental mining and which may sometimes suppress dust. Studies show that water infused into the coalbed flows through the fracture system and displaces the methane in the fractures and prevents migration from the solid coal. Displaced gas migrates away from the face area that has been water infused and enters the return ventilation airways. A gradual decrease in methane emission is observed from the start of infusion until the infused zone is mined through. Depending on the permeability of the coalbed, infusion pressures ranged from 300 to 2,200 lb/in2. Face emissions in the Upper Kittanning coalbed were reduced by 89 pet; reductions of 38 to 79 pet were measured in the Pittsburgh coalbed depending on the relationship between the face cleat direction and mining direction. Respirable dust levels were reduced by about 75 pct on a longwall section in the Pocahontas No.3 coalbed and by about 50 pct on a development section in the Upper Kittanning coalbed, but no statistically reliable reduction was found in the respirable dust levels in the Pittsburgh coalbed.

For the first time in many years, the Liebherr Group chose to host its annual conference for the international construction trade press in the United States. The reason for the move is simple ? mining. Like other large corporations, especially those in the construction fields, Liebherr felt the effects of the global economic crisis that began in 2008. The slowdown in the housing market was especially hard on Liebherr?s mobile crane and earth moving divisions. The mining division, however, while affected by crashing commodity prices that led to cancelled orders and the loss of financing for some customers, was not battered as badly as the other divisions. And now, with the price of commodities once again on the rise, it seems that it will be Liebherr?s largest machines that lead the family-owned company to better days. ?We can report that our generally optimistic view during the crisis has proved adequate,? said Joachim Janka, president of Liebherr mining equipment, at the conference in Williamsburg, VA, just down the road from the company?s mining truck division global headquarters in Newport News, VA. ?Since the third quarter of 2009, our mining equipment activities have been recording once more a strong and steady demand. This has already yielded a substantial increase in market shares for our product lines of large mining shovels as well as for mining trucks.?
