"The increasing demand for underground works in urban centers, and in particular the need to build undercrossing tunnels, requires constant evolution in building techniques in order to achieve success and safety. In the case of Brasilia, capital of Brazil, in order to preserve an important avenue (Eixo Monumental), where are located many historical monuments, the construction of a tunnel was envisioned as an option to interconnect the National Stadium (on one side of the avenue) to the Convention Center Ulysses Guimarães (on the other side). The excavation design is comprised of a coverage smaller than one diameter, height of 7.5 m, width of 9.0 m and length of 25 m. In order to enable a negligible influence on the avenue’s usage, the structure is designed as a portico system composed of pipe canopy. In this context, this study presents the portico analytical solution computed with the aid of the software Mathematica and a numerical solution using the software ABAQUS. INTRODUCTION Undercrossing tunnels are increasingly common in urban centers as alternative roads or as access to underground works of large dimensions (stations and parking lots). The geomechanical conditions of the soil mass, not always favorable, and the low distance between tunnel’s ceiling and the surface require intense treatment of the soil massif and execution of a rigid support system. The importance of the road just above the undercrossing tunnel emphasizes the need for a highly competent monitoring system because existing structures require minimum allowable displacement and do not allow the interruption of traffic. The soils that are excavated for the construction of undercrossing tunnels are composed, in most cases, of layers of fill and / or soft soil or weak rock, showing stability problems when subjected to tunneling operations. The combination of low coverage and week ground is solved by soil improvement techniques and strengthening of the excavated cross-section with further advance with the so-called New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Another option is to build structural frames that support the surface. In this research, and based on the context of a case study, we propose the study of the construction technique comprising a portico structure composed of pipe canopy. For this paper, the technical standards used are the Brazilian ones as the case study refers to this country."

A la fecha, el proyecto Magistral suma 344 Mt @ 0.45% Cu, 0.04% Mo en recursos totales (M+I+I) asociados a una mineralización tipo pórfido-skarn en el margen noreste de la Cordillera Blanca, Concuchos, en Perú. El depósito relacionase con un cuerpo intrusivo en rocas sedimentarias clásticas y carbonatadas del Cretácico. El intrusivo más importante es el stock Magistral, cuya composición varía de diorítica a monzonita y cuarzo monzonita, emplazado a lo largo de la Falla Magistral. Existen tres estilos principales de mineralización; tipo pórfido, tipo skarn y reemplazamiento de estratos (skarn distal). La edad de la alteración y mineralización ha sido determinada por los métodos K-Ar y Re-Os, correspondiendo ambas al Mioceno medio (15.3 ± 0.7 Ma en Biotita Hidrotermal y 14.73 ± 0.02 Ma en vetilla tipo “B” con cuarzo-feldespato potásico-calcopirita y molibdenita). Milpo sigue poniendo esfuerzos para hacer de este bonito depósito también un éxito minero.

Ventilation and refrigeration fortune climate modification contributes significantly to the operating costs of a deep hot mine. Mine climate simulation programs can he used to minimize the impact of these costs. There are several computer codes available to assist in this work. Whichever simulation program is used, it is the mine ventilation engineer who must supply the input data. This paper raises and answers the following question, namely, what accuracy is required of the basic input parameters, in order for a certain precision to he obtained in the predicted air temperatures? In the first part of the paper a new approach is described to estimate the dry and wet bulb temperature of the airflow, either in a dry or wet roadway. The calculation procedure allows an arbitrary temperature change with time, using Duhamel's superposition solution. Matrix-vector representation is applied to simplify the computational structure. In the second part of the paper the sensitivities of the dry and wet bulb air temperatures are analyzed, to the changes of the rock thernrophysical properties, the heat transfer coefficient, and the wetness factor.

The arid and semi-arid region of Western Australia occupies about two-thirds of the State equivalent to an area of about 1.8 million sqkm. Groundwater demand in this area has historically been linked to the pastoral andmining industries commencing with the gold discoveries in the Eastern Goldfields some 100 years ago. Substantial increases in demand have occurred in the past two decades initially as a result of nickel discoveriesin the early 1970's and more recently the rapid resurgence of the gold mining industry. Mineral exploration and development in the Great Sandy Desert at Telfer (gold) and Kintyre (uranium) and in the Great Victoria Desert at MulgaRocks (uranium) has also been accompanied by detailed groundwater investigations.

IN 1938 Ralston4 reviewed the many attempts to find a satisfactory collector for the separation of cassiterite from its ores and in 1944 Dean and Ambrose2 summarized some further attempts. Generally, soaps and amines are effective but nonselective collectors. We have discovered that reagents containing either the polar group -SO4- or _S03- are excellent collectors for cassiterite and promise to be selective.1 The response to these reagents of cassiterite and of minerals commonly associated with it was studied, using the captive-bubble technique. Using these fundamental data, the practicability of separation and concentration of tin was investigated by flotation tests in a 2000gram Denver cell. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Reagents All inorganic reagents were of Analar grade. The preparation and purification of sodium cetyl sulphate, cetyl trimethyl-ammonium bromide, laurylamine and cetylamine have been previously described.5 The other collectors were commercial surface-active agents, which were used without purification. Tests Captive-bubble Tests and Cylinder Flotation Tests have been previously described.5-10 The full lines shown in the figures relating solution composition to contact (flotation) distinguish solutions in which contact (flotation) is possible from those in which it is not. The curve is derived by successive approximation and the accuracy is ±0.2 pH units and ± 5 mg. per liter of collector or depressant. Solution compositions for which it was shown experimentally that contact or flotation is possible are marked by a circle, those for which it is not possible, by a cross, and those for which it is doubtful by a cross within a circle. It is assumed that at all other solution compositions within (without) the curve, contact or flotation is possible (not possible). After testing in the collector solution, the mineral was removed, washed, and tested by the captive-bubble method in water, or floated in a cylinder with frother only. In this way the composition of solutions in which a mineral was conditioned but in which properties of the collector solution prevented contact or flotation can be defined. The composition of solutions in which conditioning was possible lie between the full and broken curve, and the experimental results are indicated by a square. The curves show the limits of composition of solutions in which flotation in a cell would be possible but many factors other than those considered in these tests determine recovery and grade of a given mineral in practice. The measurement and management of deformation in underground excavations is a key responsibility of geotechnical and mining engineers. A critical aspect of these roles is to ensure there is sufficient ground support capacity for the expected demand.Current methodologies for monitoring deformation and ground support serviceability-limits require measuring displacement at distinct points, or using visual observations. These current methods limit the assessment to a qualitative interpretation of deformation across the entire excavation.Recent advancements of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDar) technology permit a new method for monitoring deformation that allow a full 3D image of extended sections of an excavation to be precisely scanned. The results from the comparison with subsequent scans provide valuable information on the magnitude, direction and extent of regions exceeding the ground support serviceability-limits. This new method now provides a quantitative assessment across the entire excavation being monitored.The implementation of regular scanning has been demonstrated to be highly advantageous not only at mines with swelling or squeezing ground, but also at mines with rapid seismic induced deformation. The use of LiDar technology as a routine deformation measurement tool for geotechnical and mining engineers (and further applications) are discussed in more detail in this paper.CITATION:Jones, E and Beck, D, 2017. This paper is concerned principally with the competition between fuels for industrial use in the United States. Total energy consumption in the U. S. is allocated between industrial and other uses The industrial volume is divided into two classifications (1) where-there is competition between fuels and (2) where there is no competition. The pattern of fuel consumption by electric utilities was studied because there, is competition between fuels and because it is the fastest-growing industrial market. Electric utilities fuel consumption is discussed by geographic area. The growth of each fuel in several areas is investigated. The analysis of these areas, includes the study of the relationship between prices where fuels are in, competition:- (1) on the East Coast where price competition occurs between oil and coal, and (2) in the southeastern states where competition exists between coal and gas..

From 1886, the first year shipments were recorded, until 1939, the Leadville district produced over 3,500,000 long tons of manganiferous ore. Of this total, metallurgical-type ores comprised 27 percent and manganiferous iron ores suitable for fluxing in lead smelters made up 73 percent. In 1939, the Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic minerals investigative program being conducted at the time, requested the Mineral Industries Survey Section of the Mining Division to make a comprehensive study of the manganese resources of the Leadville area. This investigation, owing to the caved and flooded condition of the underground mine workings, was necessarily confined to a study of old maps, production records, and geological reports, and the results were published as an Information Circular in July 1940.

A series of experiments have been performed to characterize fragmentation and microcracking in quartz monzonite copper porphyry. The flyer plate impact method was used to generate plane shock waves in rock specimens for impact pressures between 1.6 and 7.3 GPa and impact pulse durations between 1.1 and 7.0 µs. The effects of pressures up to 4.8 GPa and pulse duration on fragment size distributions and microcrack densities were studied. The results show that pressures effect particle sizes to a greater extent at higher pulse durations. However, changes in pressure and pulse duration show little influence on the density of microcracks induced during explosive loading. These results indicate that the nucleation and growth of microcracks in rock subjected to shock waves occur uniformly throughout. A substantial decrease in particle sizes for high pulse durations is attributed to more time allowed for microcracks to grow and coalesce, forming individual particles.

Rotary percussive drilling, vibro-drilling, vibro-rotation drilling, rotary pulsating drilling-all names that mean the same thing-are gradually appearing in mining literature. What is rotary percussive drilling? It is a combined system superimposing a rapid percussive impact on a continuous rotary action in an attempt to utilize the most desirable features of both methods. At present single and multiple carriage-mounted rotary percussion units are being used in the European coal mining regions. One well engineered unit is the Hausherr "Albo" rotary percussive drill, utilizing two alternately operating percussion pistons, and another is the multiple-unit, jumbo-mounted Salzgitter machine. Niisse & Grafer also manufacture rotary percussion drills.

The role of marketing in the development of a new project will be affected by political, commercial and technical pressures. Marketing success will be determined by the ability to predict and react to tomorrow's environment. In the Australian coal industry there is an emerging transition from production to marketing orientation. As a result, greater technical awareness of customer needs will be required. In particular, the industrial product nature of coal markets will need to be recognised. Greater attention will also need to be paid to product options and quality in mine planning. Marketing personnel will become more involved at every phase of the development of a new mine.

FLOTATION of sulphide minerals and native metals is no longer a practical difficulty. The underlying scientific principles of the method, although not explored in anything like complete detail, have been formulated with sufficient breadth so that the direction of attack on any specific case is clearly indicated. It has been known since the earliest days of flotation that certain of the nonsulphide nonmetal minerals-e.g., sulphur and graphite-would respond to flotation by oils as sulphides do; therefore they have been grouped with sulphides in many patents. But since the development of the chemical theory of collection, 1,2,3 this similarity in action has been one of the facts cited in disproof of the theory by opponents of the hypothesis. 4 5-1 Air levitationt of certain oxidized minerals, both metalliferoust and nonmetalliferous, and separation thereby from other oxidized minerals, is a recent development in practice, although the discovery of the method dates back 17 years .7 This paper presents evidence that the principles underlying the air levitation of the nonsulphide nonmetal minerals are the same as those utilized in the flotation of the sulphides and native metals. It will be apparent immediately to anyone with knowledge of mineral concentration that separation of air-levitated minerals in water from minerals not so levitated is a simple matter of water-gravity concentration, the separating device employed depending solely upon the size of the particles treated and the buoyancy differences effected by the levitation. The usual separating means employed are: (1) a flotation machine for fine, slimy and for well aerated granular material; (2) shaking tables for granular less aerated material. The development of the Yallourn East Field brown coal open cut has involved the adoption of novel investigational programs into coal qual- ity. For example, weighted average coal property statistics for key proper- ties are determined by using a unique blend of traditional and 3-dimensional geostatistical estimation. Predicted property values are made freely available from the mainframe computer in the form of kriged esti- mates of 60 000 tonne coal blocks. Geostatistical predictions are being incorporated within the Mincom/Intergraph CADD system which is used for mine design. Key properties relating to coal type, moisture, and ash have been evalu- ated to provide the required data for the design and operation of both the open cut and the power stations as well as the briquette plant.

Three magnesium alloys were processed in various ways to exhibit a wide variation in the ratios of yield strength and tensile strength in the rolling direction compared to the cross-rolling direction. Basal-plane pole figures were prepared from several specimens. A fair correlation was observed between the property ratios and the ratio of percent of poles oriented in the cross-direction quadrants compared to the percent oriented in the rolling-direction quadrants of the pole figures. THE modes by which magnesium crystals deform are such as to lead to marked preferred orientations in all forms of wrought products. The effect of the active modes at room temperature, coupled with these orientations, is often to produce a lower compressive yield stress compared to the tensile yield stress. The phenomenon is due to easy twinning in compression, and has been well-related to the preferred orientations as described by basal-plane pole figures of the hcp magnesium single crystal. The literature contains some information on the variation with test direction of the tensile properties of sheet, but no quantitative relationship to the observed pole figures has been established. These effects have been reviewed in the few com- prehensive treatises in English which have been written on magnesium technology and metallurgy.1°3 Roberts presents several pole figures, but no tensile-property data in the plane of the sheet. Raynor has no pole figures, but quotes Frommer's4 results. The information in Beck's compendium more or less parallels the results of Jones and powell.5 In both a Mg + 1.5 Mn alloy and a Mg + 4.6 A1 alloy, cold rolling was found not to change the general situation of higher properties in the cross-rolling direction,* than in the rolling direction. Thomas'6 X-ray studies of Jones and Powell's specimens did not permit correlation of properties and preferred orientation. Ansel and Betterton7 report tensile and compressive properties on three other alloys as a function of degree of cold rolling, plus a recrystallizing anneal. As rolled, there was a change in anisotropy with degree of reduction, but all alloys were reasonably isotropic in tension when annealed. X-ray diffraction photograms illustrated the kinds of orientations present, but were not correlated with the properties. Bakarian8 has described a method of determining quantitatively a preferred orientation, and illustrated the method by applying it to pure magnesium and two of its alloys. An investigation into the reliability of the data being collected at the Mount Isa Mines site operated by Glencore in Queensland allowed on-site ventilation personnel to scrutinise pressure and volume measurements collected from the primary surface fans. The investigation effectively identified discrepancies being reported to the on-site remote monitoring system. The difference between the real-time and static measurements on the P63 RAR shaft identified that the in situ differential pressure transducer and piezo annubar system was not operating correctly. This indicated a deficiency of approximately 30 per cent reporting back to the remote monitoring software versus the live readings measured with the Pitot tube bomb and ALNOR AXD610 pressure micro-manometer.Constant monitoring of an operations ventilation network is imperative to ensuring that the underground atmosphere provides a safe and healthy workplace. Further benefits to real-time monitoring allows for the early indication of network failures and promotes increased availability. An innovative approach to out engineer and improve the existing measuring equipment from the 1970s was sought.The use of ultrasonics in the mining industry is not new with ventilation management systems (VMS) equipment available within the marketplace. The introduction and implementation of a reliable product for real-time monitoring was a challenge to overcome due to limited access and suitable measuring points within the mine. The available equipment on the market through mainstream suppliers was not suitable for the unique application required due to the in situ installation of the surface fans. A solution was identified in the oil and gas industry through collaboration and innovative thinking. Smaller deposits of high grade chalcopyrite or the concentrates of low grade and complex copper bearing ores, can be subjected to extraction processes other than smelting and converting. Low temperature chlorination and segregation processes are among those mentioned in the literature. In the present work, extraction of copper from a Brazilian chalcopyrite concentrate by slurry chlorination with chlorine gas at room temperature, dry chlorination by chlorine gas in the temperature range of 350 to 450¦C and segregation roasting of the calcined concentrate in the temperature range of 650 to 800¦C have been carried out. The effect of several experimental variables on the extraction of copper has been discussed in all these cases. Under optimum experimental conditions, 100 per cent Cu extraction was possible by either slurry or dry chlorination processes and around 86 per cent Cu by segregation roasting. For all the three cases, possible methods have been suggested to trial the studies on a pilot scale to assess their technoeconomic viability.

The Beal Mountain Mine near Anaconda, MT is an interesting case history of a mine that has continued operations despite several large pit wall failures over a period of about 10 years. The largest event involved some 3.9 million tons of rock that has moved steadily at a rate of about 0.05 ft/day since 1992. This paper documents the geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring programs implemented at Beal to provide the company with a comfortable baseline that supported ongoing operations. The success and failure of a variety of stabilization measures will be discussed, along with typical instrumentation responses for several significant events. The success of Beal Mountain serves as a good model for mines faced with serious geotechnical challenges.

Over the last decade, a number of large slopes have been excavated in rock which contains families of joints or faults which dip steeply into the cut slope. Despite the absence of "adverse" structures, these slopes have exhibited alarming movement rates at very modest heights (as little as 100 meters) and slope angles (as little as 20º). Classical stability analysis suggests that such slopes should be unconditionally stable. This paper describes the toppling mechanism which has been found to be the cause of the observed movements and develops a general method for analysis of it. Simple cases are analyzed in order to provide charts which allow quick evaluation of the likelihood of this phenomenon occurring. The safety implications of such movements in slopes are also examined.
