THE property of New Calumet Mines, Limited, is on Calumet island, in the Ottawa river, about sixty-six miles northwest of Ottawa. Lead and zinc orebodies were discovered here in 1893. A gravity concentration plant was built in 1912 but was not a success metallurgically, and the plant was later destroyed by fire. A programme of diamond drilling on the property, started in 1937 and continuing to 1942, indicated ore reserves amounting to 1,300,000 tons averaging 2.75 per cent lead, 8.82 per cent zinc, and 0.041 oz. gold and 6.24 oz. silver per ton( l ). These orebodies have been developed underground by cross-cutting and drifting from a three-compartment vertical shaft, sunk to a depth of 745 feet. 'The ore is a contact metamorphic deposit occurring in rocks of the Grenville series, on or near the contact between biotite gneiss and an overlying calcareous amphibolite(2,3). It consists chiefly of iron-bearing sphalerite, galena, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and minor amounts of chalcopyriteand argentite. The gangue minerals closely associated with the ore are calcite, quartz, and various lime-silicate minerals.

"THE TOPIC on which I am speaking this afternoon is ""The Future of the Canadian Oil Industry.'' At the time of C + 100, we should take a searching look at ourselves, an honest appraisal of our achievements and a forthright accounting of our shortcomings as well as the uniquely Canadian aspects of this industry. I would like to put before you some of my views on the direction we are taking in the exploration field and in the production field. I would also like to speak briefly on some of our problems and the role of the various segments of our industry in solving these problems.First of all, let us look at the exploration picture. We are in the midst of an exploration boom. There were 133 seismic crews active in Western Canada this winter, the highest since 1957, land prices are appreciating rapidly, Canadian oil reserves increased + 16 per cent during 1966, there is a great demand for technical personnel of every kind and the whole industry, except the drilling segment, seems to be prospering. This surge of activity has its roots in two major occurrences. The first of these was the change in the pro-ration system in Alberta, the major producing province, accompanied by the change in spacing pat-terns. The proration change was designed primarily to encourage in-creased exploration and it has certainly had this effect. It has also had the unforeseen effect of put-ting everyone into what we, in the oil business, call ""elephant hunting."" In other words, the days of the development of barely economic, marginal fields are over. Oil companies today are only interested in high-reserve, high-productivity, high-quality reservoirs."

The St George orebodies are situated within the tectonically disrupted eastern limb of the Boogardie Syncline.Highly disturbed rafts of banded chert formations occur within a sequence of felsic volcanic tuffs. The chert forms the hostrock for the gold mineralization.The gold distribution within the irregular and narrow banded chert formations is erratic and patchy. The average gold content of the two orebodies is between 3 - 4 g/t Au.Economic mining of these relative small, irregular and low grade St. George orebodies can be carried out by using a highly selective mining method.The highly selective mining method uses an excavator as the principle mining tool. Blasting, breaking and loading of the rocks is done in a different way than by using a front-end loader as with the conventional mining method. Simple, and therefore cheaper, blasting breaks the rocks and lifts them up without major displacements.

The Bureau of Mines has made periodic back-pressure tests on numerous gas wells in the Texas Panhandle field luring the past several years to study the delivery capacities of the wells under different pressure and operating conditions and to determine the relationships between pressures and rates of delivery from gas wells.4/ However, information regarding the intake capacities of gas-well systems is meager, end in projects involving- the flow of gas into porous-rock reservoirs it has been necessary to determine intake capacities of gas wells by trial. Accordingly the fundamental intake characteristics of natural-gas wells have been studied to develop a method for determining intake capacities under different wellhead pressures from data descriptive of the "output" or producing characteristic of the wells.

This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation aiming to verify the concept of co-mingling of waste rock with layers of compacted tailings. Overall, co-mingling is expected to delay the onset and reduce the magnitude of acid mine drainage (AMD) production in waste rock. To denionstrate the efficiency of the method proposed, five different column tests have been set-up. Columns were fed with deionized water at the top and drainage waters were collected and analyzed. Bacteria counts were done on the tailings and waste rock after the column tests. Permeability in saturated conditions and capillary parameters were measured for the tailings. The results obtained show that the co-mingling method would be effective in mitigating AMD by maintaining nearly water-saturated conditions in compacted tailings, thus reducing oxygen supply in waste rock by preventing thermal air convection and minimizing oxygen advection and diffusion.

Many longwall panels in China are laid out along the dip direction such that the direction of longwall retreat mining is along the strike direction of coal seams. Downward mining longwall panels in steeply inclined seams refers to those that are laid out in a non-uniformly developed fold structure where the seam is not only steeply dipping, but also highly undulated along the strike direction, causing longwall mining extremely difficult because it has to deal with large dip angles that vary both in the mining and faceline directions. Obviously, the characteristics of mine pressure and overlying strata movement in downward mining longwall panels in steeply dipping seams have unique patterns that are very much different from those cases of mining the flat or gently inclined coal seams. The effects of those unique patterns presented a big challenge to production and safety. Almost all previous and current researches on ground control have been concentrated on issues related to the flat and gently inclined coal seams. Conversely, research on steeply inclined coal seams, especially those with large angle variation both along the seam dip and strike directions is almost none. Therefore, it is very important to initiate a study to better understand the characteristics of mine pressure and overburden strata movement for this special type of geological condition. The objective of this paper is to monitor and analyze the characteristics of mine pressure and overlying strata movement in downward mining longwall panels in steeply inclined seams, the angle of which varies greatly along both the seam dip and strike directions. The measured data has conclusively demonstrated that the characteristics of mine pressure and overlying strata movement in downward mining longwall panels in steeply inclined seams are different from those for the flat and gently inclined coal seams. The large downward angles of coal seam undulation along the strike (mining) direction can obviously affect the roof movement and reduce strata pressure. Study in this research showed that appropriately increasing the rate of mining (or face advance) is positive to roof control.

Adequate treatment of the difficulties surrounding the valuation of mineral lands requires that agreement be first reached defining value as understood for the purpose of appraisal. To define value as the price of a product is not sufficient, and does not assist us in using the factors that cause variations in values and in relative values. The real value of any product depends primarily upon its relation to the necessities, comforts and pleasures of mankind. As the necessities, comforts and pleasures of the civilized races differ from those of more primitive man, the value of products varies with the degree of civilization and the environment of the consumer. Coal has no value to the savages of warm climates, and arrow-head flint none to the residents of New York. It has long been recognized that what has been termed " intrinsic value " must be limited to materials that are essential to existence—air, water, food. But " intriusic value" cannot be measured in monetary terms. The intrinsic value of a bushel of wheat is due to the fact that it will support the life of an individual for a certain definite time, but this fact does not enable us to measure or to express that value in monetary terms. It has often been proposed to adopt as a measure of the value of any product the quantity of labor necessary to produce it, but this method is of limited application, and will not apply to what may be termed " intrinsic values." For many reasons it might be well, while assenting to the fact that any material may be intrinsically valuable, to abandon the use of the term " intrinsic value." One of these reasons is the tendency to confuse the idea of intrinsic value with a value that is conferred by economic conditions, that is purely artificial and that may be permanent or evanescent. Russia is a global antimony market leader. The three major antimony production provinces are Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Krasnoyarsk Territory and Trans-Baikal Territory. Russia’s largest antimony resources are Zhipkozhinsky and Solonechensky deposits in Sakha Republic (Yakutia) and Olimpiadinskoe deposit in Krasnoyarsk Territory. This work demonstrates the efficiency of computer programs and chemical technology aimed at the study of the behavior of collectors used in the processes of flotation of antimony, arsenic and Au (I – III) minerals. The most promising collectors for the flotation of ores containing antimony and gold on the basis of P(V) and compounds with S, O and N atoms were chosen. The mechanisms of interaction with the mixtures of two or three components of collectors were studied. High recovery of antimony and gold was reached in the processing of Au-Sb ores of Sarulah and Sentachan deposits in Sakha (Yakutia). X-ray radiometric methods of separation of antimony ores of Trans-Baikal Territory deposits were proposed. In order to choose the most cost-effective solvents for hydrometallurgical processing of Sb, Au-containing concentrates the method based on clusters formation between transition solvents and antimony minerals was suggested. The nature of Au losses was theoretically revealed in the sulfide-alkaline process. On the base of computer simulation, the formation of various complexes of (KAu) types was developed, for example, hydrosulphidic gold, thiosulfates of gold - Na3AuS4O6, antimony and arsenic gold, trithiostibate (III) and trythioarsenate (III) KAu were produced. The practice of processing of goldantimony concentrates to produce high-quality antimony trioxide and antimony-gold containing alloy (AGCA) regarding the special conditions of the Far North region, were analyzed. The affinage of AGCA was recommended. Creative project development of antimony industry in Russia in order to produce antimony compounds and pigments, including pyriform compounds and flame retardants (antipyrenes) is discussed.

In this article, the technologies of highly durable MgO-C bricks for the scrap impact zone and bottom blowing tuyere of converters are demonstrated. On the bases of our recent investigations, wear of scrap impact zone and bottom tuyere are explainable in terms of crack initiation and propagation. Theoretically, crack propagation in brittle material is regarded as generation of new crack surface area. It occurs when the elastic strain energy stored in the material exceeds the energy required to generate a new crack surface area. Since the overall energy consumed for crack propagation until fracture is evaluated by fracture energy, materials exhibiting high fracture energy can be regarded as materials with high fracture resistance. Therefore, two fracture energy-improving technologies for MgO-C bricks were developed. One is matrix reinforcement and the other is carbon bond enhancement. These technologies were applied to bricks for the scrap impact zone and bottom tuyere. As a result of commercial applications, notable decreases in wear rates were recognized for high fracture energy materials for the scrap impact zone and bottom blowing tuyere of converters.

Safety Measures Employed at the Dawson Mines Preventive measures for eliminating and localizing explosions is a subject of special interest to Coal Mining operators at the present time. I shall endeavor in this paper to present the practical methods which have been developed at the mines of the Stag Canon Branch of the Phelps-Dodge Corporation, Dawson, New Mexico. Adobe Dusting Adobe is used for practically all dusting on the main haulage roads. It is obtainable in sufficient quantities adjacent to the mines. Loaded into railroad cars by a clam-shell loading crane, and transferred to the mine pit cars at the nearest available point, it is readily distributed along the motor roads by means of the mine locomotives. Of first consideration for adobe dusting is the preparation of the roadway. It is essential that all loose coal and dust be removed, at least to a depth of three or four inches below the top of the rails. The adobe, in a more or less moist condition is unloaded by hand from the pit cars and stored along the previously prepared roadway, to be later scattered to a depth of several inches over the floor, and over the ribs and roof such as is possible by the use of a shovel. The adobe soon loses its moisture and becomes pulverized. Due to the disturbance caused by passing motor trips, men and animals, the dust is effectively scattered along the ribs and roof of the roads. The velocity of the intake air aids materially in sustaining the suspension of this inert matter. Another scheme for distributing the fine dust in use is to chain the top of a pine tree to the rear of the trips, both empty and loaded. Dragging it along the motor roads stirs up the dust and aided by the intake air it is carried for long distances into the workings. The adobe is continually loosened and raked, all rock, coal, etc., being collected in piles and later loaded out in pit cars. One man is employed for each six thousand feet of entry. Dusting Main Return Air-Courses The air-courses are first thoroughly cleaned. All the loose coal and rock is loaded out, the ribs and roof washed down several times. Every five or six hundred feet, the stoppings between the main and return entries are broken through and small doors installed. Blowers are used to force the fine dust into the return air-courses through these openings. Thus suspended the dust travels a considerable distance before it is deposited on the floor, ribs and roof. The material used is chiefly adobe, sun dried, and screened on the outside. A two ton car load of this dust will cover several hundred feet of airway as very little loss occurs, often depositing from 2 to 6 pounds per running foot of entry. Methods of Insertion Blowers are used to force the dust into the main returns. One unit consists of a small Buffalo blower mounted on a truck with a two H. P. motor. A six-inch pipe is attached to the blower and runs the full length of the truck with a projection over the end. A hopper is built over the pipe and connected. THIS paper is limited primarily to a description of dry coal-cleaning processes in which air currents are used to effectuate a separation between coal and refuse. Processes depending mainly on differences in the coefficient of friction, resilience and shape are not described unless the use of air is necessary for the proper functioning of the process. The air cleaning of coal is of primary importance to the coal industry of the United States. From figures presented in the 1941 edition Mechannual,1 it is estimated that at least 12 million tons of bituminous coal was cleaned in the United States during 1940 by machines using air as the separating medium. One of the current problems confronting the coal-preparation engineer is the dry cleaning of small sizes and slacks. Progress in machine development for the cleaning of small sizes has been slow in recent years in the United States of America; it has been much more rapid in Britain and on the European continent. This paper does not attempt an exhaustive survey of all these developments, and only machines and processes that have found considerable commercial application are cited. Further, no critical analysis has been made of the theory involved in the separation of coal from refuse by processes using air as the separating medium other than that necessary for an understanding of particular machine designs and applications. HISTORICAL SUMMARY The possibility of using air for the separation of coal from refuse was recognized early by mining men and many attempts were made to develop commercial machines. The ingenuity of the early experimenters is to be marveled at in view of their lack of knowledge of the theoretical principles involved. As in other arts, practice has largely preceded theory. Yet, science and practice play a game of leap frog, now one ahead, then the other; the careful experimenter governs his efforts along practical lines by adapting his experiments to the limits prescribed by scientific laws. By first studying developments and the theory involved, it is not only possible to adapt processes to new uses but also to reduce materially operating cost and to build larger units without costly failures. Although many inventors have applied for patents for separating minerals by the use of air currents, the literature in regard to coal is meager. Berrisford2 describes briefly some of the early attempts to clean coal without the use of water. Several of the examples cited by him are reproduced herein. Fig. I shows a machine used for grinding and sizing, in which rollers running in a pan with a perforated bottom and fan opening on the side crushed the coal, which was then carried by the air currents to a settling chamber. The heaviest particles dropped out first and the light ones farthest away, as shown. In the year 1864, a machine was made that could be used as a sizer or to separate dirt from coal with a sized feed (Fig. 2).

Introduction During the last decade, the metallic minerals segment of the industry could be categorized as a "feast-or-famine" business. It is no secret that metallic minerals are cyclical. Employment opportunities greatly depend on the supply and demand for its mineral products. It is also not unusual for there to be a lag between the industry's manpower requirements and academia's ability to produce new graduates. Due to this lag, there will be years with manpower shortages, as in the mid-1970s. At other times, supply will exceed demand. The question is where will the jobs be in the years to come? This presentation will review reasons why employment opportunities have declined within the metallic minerals industry. It will also predict future demand for mineral engineering graduates. And it will outline strategies for obtaining an employment offer. Historical Review - Employment From 1977 through 1983, about 75% of all metal mining employees were directly engaged in production activities, down from 83% in 1965. This decline reflects increased use of labor saving equipment, and more government regulation and foreign competition. Metal mining's employment decreased from 74,000 jobs in 1982 to fewer than 68,000 in 1983 - an 8% decline. The overall industry is having these problems because of the general downturn in the economy. For example, at the beginning of this decade, US automobile and steel industries were in trouble. Interest rates were too high and volatile. This adversely affected construction, housing starts, and manufacturing. All these industries, being large users of base metals, drastically affected the metals industry. US copper companies are still having problems. Reports indicate that many copper employers have cut production, laid-off workers, and permanently closed mines, refineries, and smelters. A decline in the demand for US produced metal products, such as copper, obviously affects some mineral engineering employment opportunities. Other factors to consider when looking at employment opportunities and why it has become difficult for US metal producers to compete in the world market include: • The grades of ore bodies of many US minerals are considerably lower than the grades of ores being mined elsewhere in the world. • The grades of ore bodies currently being mined in the US are steadily declining. • Foreign producers are largely government controlled and are not necessarily subject to the realities of supply and demand. • US environmental regulations have considerably added to production costs. Foreign producers in most countries do not have to worry about these additional costs. • US mines are getting deeper. This adds to the cost of production because of the increasing distance the ore has to be transported. • Plants and equipment are outdated. Many companies find themselves operating with equipment and plants that need modernizing or replacing. This obviously hinders competitive productivity. • Labor and management have had problems. Work stoppages in certain mining businesses and high wage and benefit costs in relation to foreign producers place US producers at a disadvantage. • Much land is unavailable. The US government owns most of the land considered to have the best potential for minerals development. Most of this land is unavailable for mining or exploration. Therefore, it appears that finding employment with a company whose primary business is mining and processing most metals, such as copper, in the US will be quite restricted and competitive. Future Demand It is difficult to anticipate what key employment opportunities within the next few years will be available to mineral engineering graduates. The Engineering Manpower Commission estimated that US engineering schools awarded 72,471 undergraduate degrees in 1983 vs. 66,990 in 1982. This was the eighth consecutive year in which the number of baccalaureates awarded has increased. On a brighter note, the US government's Occupational Outlook Quarterly stated that the growth rate through 1995 for all engineers is an encouraging 49% over present levels. Experience with the ASC multipoint gas lift system was obtained in Colonia zone of the West Montalvo field near Oxnard, Calif. The wells in this pool produce from depths varying from 10,500 to 12,000 ft. Oil gravity is generally 14 to 15' API with a few extremes of 12 and 20" API. Some salt water is produced which causes some very viscous emulsions. Viscosities at 150F (which is the approximate wellhead temperature) vary from 5,000 to 100,000 SSU. Most of the production is by gas lift, although a few wells are produced by rod and hydraulic pump. About half of the gas-lift wells are on continuous flow and the remainder are on intermittent lift using large, ported, pilot-operated valves for single-point transfer of gas from casing to tubing. Gas-liquid ratios vary from about 6 to 10 Mcf/bbl of gross fluid lifted. Wells are produced to a 450-psi trap system. The following remarks will be confined to intermittent lift only, since this is the type of lift which has been achieved with the ASC valve system. The maximum gross fluid which has been produced by single-point intermittent lift is about 350 B/D in 3-in. tubing and 200 B/D in 21/2-in. tubing with gas-liquid ratios of approximately 7 to 9 Mcf/bbl. Some design changes could reduce this ratio. The ASC multipoint system has provided production as high as 480 BOPD in 21/2-in. tubing with gas-liquid ratios just under 4 Mcf/bbl. To be able to apply the multipoint system, it is recommended that a detailed explanation be obtained concerning transition-point pressure and stabilizer setting—what its significance is to the string design, how it may work for or against the operation of the well, how it is related to tubing sensitivity and how it affects the unloading operation. The unloading operation may only be of academic interest in a technical paper, but to the production foreman, unloading and setting the valves in operation is a very real problem and should be understood in detail. One item touched lightly in the paper was the unloading valve. This valve controls the maximum pressure at which the well can be operated. When lifting heavy viscous fluids, it is most important to set this valve for the maximum possible realistic operating pressure at the surface. If the well lifts easily, it is simple to set the ASC valves at a lower operating pressure and the unloading valve will remain closed; but if the well happens to be heavier to lift than anticipated, it may be desirable to operate on the unloading valve itself and use all the energy obtainable at the bottom of the hole. In the Colonia pool very heavy wet-gas gradients are experienced due to the viscosity of the liquid and the dense mist which is left behind a slug of fluid. There are many combination strings of 3- and 21/2-in. tubing. This aggravates the wet-gas gradient problem and provides wet-gas gradients of about 50 to 70 psi/1,000. An advantage which multipoint lift has provided is increased slug efficiency through better maintenance of pressure under the slug and decreased fall back as the slug passes up the tubing. By using multipoint injection, wet-gas gradients have been reduced to about 30 psi/1,000. This has reduced bottom-hole operating pressure and given a production increase. The ASC valve is not a simple device. It's operation is difficult to understand, and it must be understood to be used efficiently in gas-lift design. Operating problems are difficult to diagnose—whether they be caused by the fluid lifted, valve malfunction, lift gas rate, or operating pressure. Calculations and reasoning are required to find out what is causing the problem. Inherent in the ASC valve is the inability to create large pressure differentials across a slug. Large differentials may be required to overcome the inertia of very viscous fluid as it is being accelerated in the bottom of the hole. This is tied back to the design of the unloading valve and is one reason for the importance of setting the unloading valve for the highest possible operating pressure. ~u; to the narrow spread the ASC valves provide, it is impossible to cycle slower than about 24 cycles/day on choke control. If small production of 150 BOPD and less is expected, a surface time-cycle controller will be required if the most economical operation is to be achieved. To achieve a satisfactory operation, the operator must keep a record of any changes made in the operating pressure of the ASC valves. Anything which may cause changes in casing pressure in excess of the stabilizer setting will change the valve operating pressure, and if this is not noted from daily inspection of the well casing-tubing pressure recorder charts, the operator will lose control of the well. Significant results can be achieved using ASC valves; however, considerable knowledge is required to design with them, and attention to detail is required for satisfactory field operation.

The paper presents research on the influence of the goaf methane inflow on a fire. The problem was investigated by a computer simulation of a fire developing in a goaf. A relevant mathematical model of the fire was selected, which considered both burning of coal and methane. The combustion process is very sensitive on the oxygen and methane concentrations, which was indicated on graphs of the fire temperature evolution. Examples of computer simulation for various location of the fire were considerd. Analysys of results confirms the influence of the content of the goaf methane on development of fires.

Allis Mineral Systems' GRATE-CAR agglomeration/induration/reduction process is currently being operated to process ilmenite at Tinfos Titan & Iron KS in Tyssedal, Norway. In this process, balled ilmenite concentrate is fed to a traveling grate where pellets are dried and preheated, using fully oxidized kiln exhaust gas. Hot preheated, semi-indurated pellets are fed directly to a ported kiln where reduction of the ilmenite's iron oxide fraction occurs in the presence of lump coal. The reduced pellet sand coal char are discharged from the kiln to an indirect rotary drum cooler. Cooled pellets and char are screened and magnetically separated prior to their further processing in a downstream smelting operation. The pellets are melted and the titanium dioxide and iron are separated. Operation commenced in late 1986.

A mathematical model is described for the transfer of hydrophobic compounds from aqueous to an immiscible organic phase using fine bubble aeration; the process otherwise known as "solvent sublation" an adsorptive bubble separation process. The limitations of the model are explored by simulating experimental results both for a batch scale process and a continuous process. The qualitative predictions of the model with respect to the influence of the organic layer (mineral oil) are tested by performing experiments using chloroform and 2,3,6-trichloroanisole as hydrophobic compounds in the aqueous phase. The continuous process is seen to be limited by the requirements of fine bubble generation and the ratio of influent feed rate to air flow rate.

"SynopsisCapital cost estimates are important in decisions on whether a project will be approved, mothballed, or abandoned. In South Africa, junior coal miners do not have extensive databases of historical projects from which to estimate capital costs. The purpose of this paper is to establish formulae that can be used for estimating capital costs of developing coal mines in a coal-producing country, using South Africa as a case study. The costs are estimated to an error of magnitude level of -30% to +50%, which is suitable for a concept study level, using a parametric estimation technique. The study uses data from completed coal mining projects from selected coal-producing countries. Three formulae are developed and presented for estimating capital costs of underground bord and pillar, surface shovel and truck, and dragline operations.IntroductionCapital cost estimates play a critical role in deciding whether projects will proceed, be delayed, or abandoned. It is therefore important that capital cost estimates are carried out accurately as determined by the estimation guidelines based on the level of estimation conducted (Shafiee and Topal, 2012). The lack of literature on estimation of capital costs in many coal mining countries is adversely affecting junior coal miners, since they do not have an extensive database of historical projects on which to base estimations. This paper gives an overview of some criteria for the selection of processes for the recovery of lead and zinc from various raw materials and/or intermediate products. A glossary of possible processes and process variants, is presented and discussed, as well as the way in which these are interlinked. Recent developments in metallurgical process synthesis are also discussed, and the results produced by an eco-techno-.economic synthesis procedure for process routes in zinc metallurgy are given briefly. The way in which such a synthesis can complement a life-cycle assessment (LCA) of zinc-producing technologies is also described.

The purpose of this paper is to relate progress in the engineering field called Minerals Beneficiation to undergraduate and graduate education in our colleges and universities. So mach has been written recently about the education of scientists and engineers that I've had to struggle against the temptation to repeat what has been often said before, particularly because man like Robert Mehl of Carnegie Tech, Antoine Gaudin of MIT, H. M. Davis of Penn State, and John Vanderwilt of Colorado School of Mines have recently written many quotable paragraphs on the subject. In the matter of progress, the rapidity of proliferation in the area of physical and chemical beneficiation is convincing proof that this is indeed a lively art, and having been a millman for 35 uninterrupted years I prefer to lean on personal observations to some extent, rather than on statistics and charts v culled from the journals. I propose in this paper to talk first about the progress we've made in our branch of the mining industry in the last 3 decades--particularly in the last few years--and try to show that future progress will depend upon the quality of education and capacity for research possessed by our colleges. The second part will deal with some of the problems the colleges encounter in trying to fulfill these responsibilities.

Shortly after production was begun at the Duval Sierrita concentrator in February 1970, it became evident that difficulties would be experienced in reaching the designed operating level of 72,000 stpd. Since the major restrictions to production resided in the reduction crushing system, a comprehensive program was initiated to evaluate and optimize all crusher parameters affecting production. Positive relationships were established between production rate and crusher power draught, mantle support pressure, crusher setting, and crusher throw. Other parameters evaluated were the effects of feed distribution, crusher speed, mantle and concave configuration, choke feeding, and ore type. In order to obtain maximum production, it was also imperative that the mechanical integrity of the crushers be improved. Therefore, redesign of nearly the entire crusher assemblage, including such items as the top shell, bushings, and the mantle hydraulic support system, was required. In addition, automatic control stategies were evaluated and detailed operating guidelines were established. As a result of this extensive crusher examination, the limitation on plant throughput has been shifted to the grinding section, and a monthly average production level of 86,000 stpd is currently achieved. Programs under current evaluation are aimed at further increasing capacity to exceed 90,000 stpd.
