"SummaryThe results of this investigation indicate that the gold in the cyanide tailing of refractory gold cyanides is occluded in fused •particles formed during roasting. This conclusion was reached following microscopic examination of calcines produced at various furnace temperatures with different atmospheres, and a •comparison with calcines produced by decomposing samples of completely sulphated concentrate under conditions such that the maximum particle temperature varied between 6•50°C. and 1,100°C. This comparison showed that the particle temperature during a normal roast may be several hundred degrees higher than the furnace atmosphere, or that the fusion is associated with a low melting (950°C.) eutectic mixture of FeO and FeS.Because of the unavoidable particle fusion during a furnace roast, and because low particle temperatures are essential for gold extraction by cyanidation, aqueous medium oxidation under high oxygen pressures was studied. Gold recovery from calcines produced by this means was over 98 •per cent •compared with a maximum of 80 per cent from furnace calcines.IntroductionMANY arsenical gold ores are called 'refractory' because much ' of the gold cannot be satisfactorily extracted by cyaniding the raw ore or concentrate. In 2009, the Gold Quarry openpit mine experienced multiple large-scale slope failures of the upper east highwall that reduced gold ore extraction for nearly 18 months. The slope failures occurred within a weak, consolidated sedimentary sequence that exhibits strength characteristics that are transitional between soil and rock. Instability initiated as mining exposed the lower, high plasticity subunits of the Carlin Formation. This deformation created preferential flow paths that allowed ground water from the upper sandy subunits to infiltrate low-permeability, clay-rich subunits, thereby enhancing deformation of the slope toe, which, in turn, destabilized the upper portion of the highwall. The outcome was a 160 m high slope failure that had a lateral run-out of 850 m. The effort to return the pit to ore production required geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations and the preliminary remediation mining activity to be concurrent. This required the development of detailed safety procedures and a requirement to modify the remediation design as new results were obtained. An initial challenge was to mitigate a near vertical, 90 m headscarp with localized, blast-induced slope failures. Back-analyses with numerical modeling software indicated that the failure surface could be shallower, which contradicted the initial failure interpretations. Eventually, drilling results confirmed this alternative failure geometry. The final remediation design incorporated shallower slope geometries and an approximately 3 Mt buttress along the base of the Carlin Formation and bedrock contact to reinforce the subunits with residual strength properties. The results are a stable highwall within the Carlin Formation following nearly 10 years of repeated slope failures, and an example of the necessity to conduct appropriate geotechnical and hydrogeological studies during the early stages of a new layback evaluation or new openpit development.

THE Fall Regional Meeting of the Institute, which has now for some years been held in cooperation with the Western Division of the American Mining Congress, will be held this year at Joplin, Mo., in the heart of the great Tri-State district. This year the Tri-State Zinc and Lead Ore Producers Association is joining in the meeting. The Society of Economic Geologists will also take part though not offering any papers. The district in which the meeting is held includes adjacent parts of Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. Out in the heart of a fertile prairie farming country, it is one of the major mining districts of the world. It produces normally approximately one-third of the zinc ore mined in the United States which is equivalent to nearly one-half the zinc since the concentrate has always been notable for the height of its grade. Even in the depressed business year 1930, the American Bureau of Metal Statistics credits the district with 434,460 tons of concentrates equal to 217,230 tons of zinc out of 1,503,095 and 576,630 respectively for the country as a whole. This was equal to about one-seventh of the world's output of zinc, more than that of any foreign country. In addition about 75,000 to 100,000 tons of lead is annually furnished by the same mines. Elsewhere we present a general description of the district prepared for this meeting by J. C. Heilman, a Lehigh graduate, who has spent the past eleven years there and has had charge of explorations for many of the companies.

Borehole Mining (BHM) is a remotely operated underground and underwater method of extracting (mining) mineral resources by high-pressure water jets. It can be carried-out from the land surface, open pit floor, underground mine and floating platform or vessel. The method is currently in use in mining and exploration of such natural resources and industrial materials as: uranium, iron ore, quartz sand, gravel, coal, poly-metallic ores, phosphate, gold, diamonds, rare earths, amber and several more. Yet another application of Borehole mining technology is construction of subsurface collectors, ground walls and storage for compressed or liquefied gases, oil and other products.

Grinding media is of great concern in the mining industry mainly because its consumption represents an important part of the costs during mineral processing and consequently, of the total mining business OPEX. In addition, grinding media consumption impacts directly on flotation performance through negative contamination by corrosion, affecting the pulp chemical potential, complicating the understanding and control of the process, as galvanic interactions between mineral species also occur. In addition, during the process there is also a physical consumption of the grinding media through erosion and impact. In both cases, mineralogy has an important role because pulp abrasion power, chemical reactivity, rheology, hardness and other variables depend on the minerals contained in the pulp and their interactions. In the present study, a geometallurgical and phenomenological model, which describes the grinding media consumption and its relationship with mineral hardness expressed by Bond Work Index, was obtained based on advanced mineral characterization techniques such as Hylogger3TM, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence and experimental grinding tests using a laboratory mill applied on Chilean copper pulps. The results obtained show that pH has an important effect on grinding media consumption, because corrosion varies with hydrogen ions availability. Also, mineral hardness depends on mineralogical composition, but textural analysis must be performed to have a better description of this property. Finally, minerals present in a sample define the grinding media consumption mechanism, because a sample with harder minerals and a greater value of Bond Work index is capable of protecting grinding media from impact wear, while a sample with lower hardness but with a big sulfide minerals content would be more aggressive with grinding media because corrosion is more important in this case. The geometallurgical model obtained is capable to relate the grinding time, mineral hardness, content of sulfide minerals and grinding pH to estimate the grinding media consumption.

Used basic brick taken from copper anode furnaces, reverberatory furnace roofs, md copper converters have been examined by chemical analysis, petro-graphical examination, and X-ray diffraction tech-niques. In the anode furnace roof, brick absorb copper and copper oxides, whilst in the reverberatory roof, iron oxide with smaller amounts of alumina and silica are absorbed. Chemical reactions in the converter are most complex since the brick absorb both a copper-copper oxide slag and a fayalite-magnetite slag. CHANGES taking place in basic brick after use in copper smelting furnaces have received attention from C. Burton Clark and J. Spotts Mc Dowell,' who examined brick taken from copper converters, and by G. R. Rigby and B. G. Hamilton' who examined brick from copper anode furnaces. This paper describes the changes taking place in basic brick from all types of copper smelting furnaces and discusses the major reasons for lining wear. A) METHODS OF EXAMINING SAMPLES A variety of used brick have been taken from the following positions in various furnaces, a) roofs, reverberatory arches, and bottoms of copper anode furnaces, b) roofs of copper reverberatory furnaces and c) the tuyere line and end walls of copper converters. The method of examination was standard in that brick were first measured and the extent of wear-back computed. They were next sawn in two by a central cut vei-tical to the working face to enable the freshly cut surfaces to reveal any zonal changes and cracks, both of which usually ran parallel to the working face. Each well-defined zone was then sampled for a) chemical analyses, b) petrographical studies using transmitted and reflected light techniques under the microscope, and c) X-ray diffraction studies on powdered samples. In many electronic/optoelectronic devices, interaction between the metal stack and solder is undesirable. If a reaction happens, a nonuniform joint containing spikes and voids is likely to form and as a result the heat dissipation deteriorates significantly, which in turn, leads to the degradation of the bond. In the present work the interaction between Ti/Mo/ Au metallization system, which was sputter deposited on AlN substrates, and Pb-Sn solder was studied by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, an EDX system was used to trace the changes in chemical composition of the layers after solder tests. The microstructural examinations show that the Ti and Mo layer from the Ti/Mo/ Au metallization system are not impermeable enough and thus Ca from the surface of the substrate moves all the way up to the interface of Au/Mo and forms an intermetallic at the interface, which grows over time.

The national Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health, Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multi-element ground support system, it is necessary to know when the material has developed a compressive strength of approximately 1 MPa (145 psi), the early threshold for safe re-entry of miner and machine into shotcreted mine workings at this value, the material has developed enough strength to be self-supporting and to allow for installation of other ground support components that require drilling of the shotcrete layer without degradation. NIOSH researchers have developed methods and portable test equipment to measure shotcrete strength on site in the first six hours after application using a partial beam test standard, a STM C 116-90 (1990). These advances were demonstrated in tests with five commercially available shotcrete mixes, sprayed as dry shotcrete using field expedient methods and equipment. The strength values from these tests allowed for real-time identification of the early strength threshold and were consistent with strengths reported using laboratory-type equipment. Measuring the early strength properties of shotcrete directly at the mine site can improve mine safety by identifying appropriate re-entry times and providing a convenient means of conducting on site quality control during shotcrete applications.

In a recent study' of the martensitic transformation of Cu-Zn ß-phase alloys, it was noted that the MS temperature at the surface was raised due to the loss of zinc by volatilization. It seems likely, therefore, that the MS temperature may serve as a guide for the measurement of composition. From a knowledge of the dependence of the transformation temperature on composition, 2 it should be possible to detect variations in zinc content which are less than 0.1 at. pct by measuring the MS temperature throughout the sample. It is unlikely that an electron microprobe analysis could detect accurately such small zinc losses because the presently accepted limits of accuracy of the micro-probe analysis in simple ternary systems are of the order of 2 to 5 pct of the amount present.3 In the present study, a composition gradient was produced by precipitating the a primary solid solution, and reheating for a very short time within the 0-phase field. This paper discusses the dewatering strategy adopted and the considerations and procedures required to incorporate a dewaterinq scheme into the Mt Whaleback mining operation. It concludes that in pit pre-dewaterinq has successfully allowed mining to progress below the standing water level with the minimum of disruption or radical change to the mining method. It is recognised however, that dewatering is not a static activity and there is a requirement for ongoing investigations and development. Pre-dewatering commenced in October, 1984. Purpose designed pumping trailers have been employed to minimise the loss of pump availability resulting from the frequent. need to remove and reinstall pumps when close vicinity blasts occur. To July, 1986, some 0.5 Mm' of groundwater had been pumped from the unconfined orebody aquifer. Mining has progressed to some 20 m below the standing water level without. any undue water associated problems. Ultimately, it is ,cheduled to extend some 300 in below the original water level in the West Pit. With the development of an increasing area of the mine below the standing water level, the influence of seasonal high intensity rainfall events, which had previously caused little concern, now need to be addressed. WideSpread experimentation has been conducted in recent years to devise a means of preventing intergranular corrosion in austenitic chromium-nickel steels of the 18 per cent chromium-8 per cent nickel type. Additions of titanium to these steels have been used commercially to overcome this dificulty, as advocated by Krupp of Germany, and the latest literature reference concerning improved details of this method is the article by Bain, Aborn and Rutherford.' Extensive work by the present authors has shown columbium also to be a particularly valuable agent for inhibiting intergranular corrosion. This paper does not deal with steels that are largely or wholly austenitic; it is limited to a discussion of the results obtained through the use of titanium and columbium in plain high-chromium steels. For many years titanium has been used commercially by some steelmakers as a cleanser, and to a lesser extent as a hardener, but then in greater percentages. The results of the work to be described disclose that titanium and columbium in proper Proportions act as effective softeners in the high-chromium steels. It is well known that chromium intensifies the hardening effect of carbon in steel; it imparts pronounced air-hardening properties within a rather wide range of chromium content; it provides increased ductility in steels of given strength and hardness; and it enhances resistance to corrosion and oxidation at elevated temperatures to a marked degree. However, in applications requiring a combination of some of these valuable properties great hardness is frequently a detriment rather than a merit. When the objective is a soft and ductile steel having optimurn corrosion resistance, the producer strives for a carbon content as low as commercially practicable. Despite these efforts some of the commercial high-chromium steels low in carbon present considerable difficulties during production, owing to their air-hardening properties, and in consequence the economic result is not favorable. More than 200 minerals are known that contain the rare-earths and thorium. Monazite and bastnaesite, however, are the principal commercial sources of the rare-earths, and monazite is the principal source of thorium. Monazite was in demand in earlier years mainly for its content of thorium, which was used in the manufacture of Welsbach gas mantles; but beginning in the latter part of the nineteenth century, the rare-earths became progressively more important than thorium. Recently, however, the tenor of thorium in monazite has again become a matter of commercial interest. Rare-Earths and Thorium The rare-earths proper are defined by spectroscopists as the oxides of 14 elements with atomic numbers ranging from 58 to 71; but more commonly lanthanum, with an atomic number of 57, is also included, in which case these 15 elements are often designated as the lanthanides. Chemists also include scandium and yttrium as elements of the rare-earths. A second group of elements, beginning with actinium and including thorium, protactinium, uranium, and all the transuranium elements so far produced, with atomic numbers ranging from 89 upward, are chemically and structurally related to the lanthanides, and are known as the higher rare-earths or actinides. Berzelius discovered that the lanthanides could be separated roughly into three groups, based upon the solubility of their double salts, R2(SO4)3-K2SO4-2H2O, in excess of K2SO4. This separation, with the substitution of sodium for potassium, is still used commercially. The double salts of the cerium earths were found to be almost insoluble; the terbium earths, partly soluble; and the yttrium earths, completely soluble. Based upon the degree of solubility, scandium belongs with the cerium earths; and yttrium belongs with, and gives its name to, the yttrium earths. These three groups with their atomic numbers are shown below. [ ] The prevailing state of oxidation for the rare-earths is R2O3, but cerium may readily be oxidized to the tetravalent state, in which condition it may be separated chemically from the other cerium earths. Praseodymium and terbium may also exist with the valence IV, and samarium, europium, and ytterbium may have the valence II. Effective strata control, utilising fully encapsulated resin grouted roof bolts is dependent on the installed quality of the reinforcement elements. Resin based grouts are the main form of rock bolt anchorage in the underground coal industry in Australia and New Zealand. To be effective the system requires the mixing of the catalyst and mastic components of the resin as well as shredding of the cartridge that contains the resin. Over the past six years Solid Energy New Zealand Ltd (SENZ) has pioneered an extensive work programme quantifying the effects and extent of poor installation quality due to gloving, poor mixing and loss of encapsulation (Pastars 2003, Campbell et al 2003, Mould et al 2004, Campbell et al 2005 and Pastars & MacGregor, 2005). The One-Step Bolt (OSB), an innovative bolting solution designed and manufactured by Hilti Pty Ltd offers a self drilling, single pass bolting method that eliminates gloving, guarantees mixing quality and encapsulation performance of the installed product while not jeopardising the mechanical performance of the bolt. This paper details recent work undertaken by SENZ designed to understand and quantify the system performance of the Hilti OSB in New Zealand?s thick coal seam mining environments.

Brief descriptions of several types of unit pulverizeI' are given and the functioning of the components that crush, carry, dry and classify the coal is considered. A distinction is drawn between pulverizers which crush particle beds and those .operating by free-crushing. The overall performance of pulverijlers is considered in terms of correlations between mill variables, coal grindability, abrasiveness, moisture and particle size. Brief discussioiJ. of the influence of pulverized fuel quality on boiler operation and of pulverizing costs concludes the paper.INTRODUCTIONModern coal pulverizers function as carriers of materials and as crushers, as dryers and as size classification machines and, thus, the unit pulverizer comprises. several components that normally function as separate apparatus. The controls of the unit pulverizer must have sufficient flexibility to accommodate rapid variations of boiler load or coal quality. Further, the machine must be robust, yet easy to maintain preferably at annual intervals-so that maintenance costs are small (for coal is a relatively cheap material). Usually, the full load of a modern pulverized-fuel fired boiler can be raised with one pulverizer off-line. All coals, from anthracites to brown coal, may be prepared as pulverized fuel (hereafter P.F.) .Each pulverizer of a direct-fired boiler has, broadly, to supply the burners with coal powdered so that about 80 per cent passes a 200 B.S. sieve and only a small proportion, less than about 10 per cent, remains on the 100 B.S. sieve. The classification processes must prevent any appreciable proportion of coarse particles in the P.F. and yet not return excessive proportions of "finished" fines. STRATMAT LIMITED, through its subsidiary, the Strategic Manganese Corporation, controls two adjoining iron-manganese properties five miles west of Woodstock, New Brunswick. One is a staked property of 77 claims traversed by one trunk highway, several secondary roads, and a branch line of the Canadian National railway. The other property, a 20-square-mile Concession immediately to the north-east, is also traversed by an excellent network of roads. Both proper-ties are situated in gently rolling farmland. The deposits were discovered in 1836 by Dr. C. T. Jackson. The first attempt to exploit them was made in 1848 when a blast furnace was erected with a capacity of 7 tons per day. The ore was mined by a series of deep trenches that followed the folds of the enclosing slates. In the late years of operation, bog iron ore from Burton and Maugerville, in Sunbury county, was used in conjunction with the Wood-stock ore. An additional 5-ton furnace was erected in 1863 and mining was carried on intermittently until 1884. No further extensive work was done until 1953. During the period of activity, approximately 70,-000 tons of ore are said to have been smelted ( 1). During these earl y operations the Iron Ore Hill and Moody Hill deposits were partially opened, with the ?bulk of the furnace feed being mined from the Iron Ore Hill workings. The low tenor and apparently limited extent of the deposits, the high. ?content of phosphorus, and the increasing scarcity of fuel, were the chief factors that brought the enterprise to an end.

The problem of applying instrument control of variables associated with lead-zinc ore treatment has been under investigation for several years at The Zinc Corp. facilities in Broken Hill, Australia. In 1959 it was decided that there was sufficient knowledge of the problem to enable specifications to be drawn up for a system to automatically control at set conditions the roll crushing, ball milling, lead flotation and zinc flotation sections. In choosing between electrical and pneumatic control systems the broad principle was adopted that if the sensing system was pneumatic the transmission and control would also be pneumatic, whereas if electrical sensing was employed, electrical transmission and control would apply. In general. pneumatic systems were preferred owing to lack of experience with, and standardization of, the electrical systems offered at the time the specification was prepared.

High-grade coal is locked in the shaft protective pillars at 900 m below surface in the Czech part of Upper Silesian Coal Basin. To optimise recovery of coal from the larger size shaft protective pillar, room and pillar (called bord and pillar in India) is trialled to further develop these on smaller pillars. This development followed a constant gallery width of 5.2 m and 3.5 m height. The monitored pillar size in the first developed panel varied from 860 m2 to 1225 m2 of area. The stability of these pillars (i.e., natural supports) at this depth of cover is observed to be a vital issue to control ground movement and safety of the surface structures. A simple calculation of safety factor revealed that application of an empirical method for estimating size and shape of the pillar is inappropriate due to complex geo-mining conditions of the site. Accordingly, geo-technical instruments are installed in the panel for monitoring the stability of the diamond shaped pillar at different stages of the development. Extensive monitoring of the pillar behaviour by these instruments provided an important set of data for such optimum recovery. An established process of simulation-based pillar strength estimation is often used by the mining industry, but calibration is generally done with the help of empirical formulation. However, for the deep-seated pillar, the strength suggested by the existing empirical formulations (except the CMRI formula) is found to be much different from the instrument observations. Using a study conducted at Czech hard coal mines, an attempt is made to develop a strain-softening-based numerical modelling approach to assess pillar performance at deeper cover. The recorded value and nature of the pillar spalling in the field along with the CMRI formula are used to calibrate the developed simulation approach. An assessment of the stability of the developed pillars using simulated models did not indicate any collapse of the natural supports. This paper briefly presents difficulties in pillar design at great depth of cover and field and simulation results of pillar strength estimation in Czech hard coal mines.
