"The closed loop standing column well (CLSCW) system uses a closed circuit of water to develop the same thermal heat exchange characteristics that are achieved from traditional open circuit standing column well that uses the ground water directly. Pipe pile and pipe anchor foundations can be used as CLSCW components for ground source heat exchange. New data gathering and analysis techniques and equipment installed in the heat pumps allow any mechanical engineer to design the system without specialty engineering equipment and certifications.CLSCW Description:Closed end steel pipe of varying outer diameter (O.D.) is installed by various technologies at varying depths depending on subsurface geology. The wells are arranged as stand alone wells or in groups joined in parallel or in series or in a combination of both. These pipes may also serve a dual function as foundation supports, deep foundation pile, anchors or earth retention components. These wells are then internally coated to minimize corrosion. The wells are then plumbed and capped to create a vessel equipped with a supply and return water line.The stand alone well or group of wells is then used as a ground heat exchanger for a ground source heat pumps located in or around the building.The ground source heat pumps provide heating and cooling to the building either with a traditional ducted distribution system or with radiant heating and cooling. These systems can reach efficiencies three times greater than traditional gas fired heat sources and five times greater than traditional air conditioning sources."

The activity of aluminum in solid Co-A1 alloys has been measured by an isopiestic technique between 850° and 1200°C from 45 to 80 at. pct Al. The activity shows a Precipitous decrease around the stoichzornetric composition of CoAl. Free energies of mixing have been calculated over a limited composition range. Considering an antistructure-vacancy defect mechanism, the degree of intrinsic disorder, a , in CoAl was related to the alunminum activity. Excellent agreement between the calculated and experimental activity curves was obtained for a = 1.25 x 10-4. ThERMODYNAMIC properties of solid aluminum-transition metal alloy are being studied in an investigation of disordering in ordered compounds. In a continuing series of investigations, activities of solid Fe-1,' Ni-A1, kd r-A13 alloys have been measured. From the results for Fe-A1 and Ni-A1, the degree of intrinsic disorder for the equiatomic compounds was calculated2 using equations derived by Wagner and chottk. From the results for Cr-A1 the degree of intrinsic disorder was calculated from equations derived by Orr.' In this paper, the results of the study of Co-A1 alloys are described. Published activity data in the Co-A1 system has been limited to liquid alloys at 1600°C.° A heat capacity study7 of stoichiometric CoAl indicated that a second-order phase transformation occurs at 790° C, attributed to an order-disorder reaction. Oelsen and Middel,' employing the calorimetric mixing of pure liquid metals, obtained heats of formation for compositions from 6 to 90 at. pct Co. Heats of formation for 50 and 78 at. pct Co alloys have also been measured by acid solution calrimetr. The Co-A1 phase diagram, as compiled by Hansen and Anderko,lo is in good agreement with more recent X-ray evidence. The method for measuring activities of aluminum in this study is essentially that employed in the studies of the Fe-1,' i-Al, and r-A13 systems. This isopiestic method entails placing cobalt specimens, in a temperature gradient, in a sealed alumina system containing a pure liquid aluminum source of fixed vapor pressure. The specimens are equilibrated, cooled to room temperature, and their final compositions determined. From the measured temperature of the specimens and the known vapor pressure of pure aluminum the activities of aluminum in the alloy can be calculated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The cobalt was 3-mil-thick sheet of 99.9 pct purity (herritt Gordon Mines Ltd., anada). The major impurities were 0.1 pct Ni, 0.014 pct C, 0.018 pct Fe, 0.004 pct S, and 0.005 pct Cu. The aluminum metal had a purity of 99.99 pct (Aluminum Corp. of America) and all alumina parts were 99.7 pct A1,O3 (Triangle RR Grade, Morganite Refractories, Inc.) with major impurities 0.05 pct SiOz, 0.1 pct Fe203, 0.2 pct NazO, and 0.05 pCt K20. Runs 1 to 3 were made with annular cobalt specimens (12 mm ID by 21 mm OD) punched from the sheet. The specimens were deburred and degreased in carbon tetrachloride and in acetone. The samples, each weighing about 150 mg, were then positioned along an alumina rod, a in. OD by 14 in. long, separated by alumina spacers, i in. ID by | in. OD by & in. long. The lower end of the rod was placed in a hole drilled in the center of an 80-g aluminum cylinder. This assembly was put into an alumina crucible, 1+ in. ID by 13 in. OD by 3+ in. high, and the position of each sample was measured to within 50.5 mm relative to the bottom of the crucible. An alumina tube, 28.5 mm ID by 35.5 mm OD by 14 in. long, closed at the top, was slipped over the whole assembly, so that it fitted snugly into the bottom crucible. The entire reaction assembly was tied with molybdenum wire and lowered into a mullite tube, closed at the bottom. A quartz thermocouple tube, closed at one end, containing a t/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple, calibrated according to the specifications of the National Bureau of standards,'' was placed along the reaction assembly inside the mullite tube. The temperature of each specimen could be determined by gradually raising the thermocouple and measuring the temperature gradient along the reaction assembly. The combined error in temperature measurement and sample position resulted in a total error of Q°C in the recorded temperature of each sample. The mullite tube was sealed at the top by a water-cooled brass head, connected to a conventional glass vacuum system. The aluminum reservoir is heated to its melting point sealing the alumina system containing the samples. During this process the pressure is maintained below 0.01 li Hg. During subsequent heating to establish the proper temperature gradient and throughout the entire run the pressure is maintained below 2 1 Hg by means of a two-stage mechanical pump. Equilibration runs lasted from 4 to 6 weeks and were terminated by air cooling. The temperature of the liquid aluminum reservoir was brought below its melting point in less than 20 min. For runs 4 and 5, alloy buttons with 49 and 69 at. pct A1 were prepared from the initial high-purity metals by arc melting under purified argon. The alloy buttons were comminuted to powder with an alumina mortar and pestle until the powder passed through a 400-mesh screen, particle size 0.0014 in. The world experience shows that the tremendous potentialities of the computers and other technical means in improving management efficiency are not fully utilized. One of the causes is the tendency to solve the problems of management automation divorced from the management methods and schemes which demand continuous improvement in view of the steady progress of the social production. It may be safely affirmed that making decisions on management improvement divorced from management schemes or on both divorced from management automation problems cannot lead to success. The grave and sometimes unsuperable difficulties encountered in management automation arise from copying traditional management methods and schemes without solving the problems which exist both in management and automation fields. The system solution of management problems has unquestionable advantages and is not proposed for discussion. What is proposed to discuss is the difficulties emerging in developing a methodology of the system approach to management improvement and automation. Though aware of the fact that the questions proposed for discussion are not new, we think it advisable to briefly review them, first because they fall in the "chronically unsolvable" category, and, secondly, as it will enable us to illustrate the method of solving them in the framework of the proposed system approach.

Conventional treatment of oxide and oxidised sulphide minerals by flotation involves the use of sodium sulphide for sulphidisation. Sodium sulphide is generally applied in a "slug" dosing fashion with manual regulation. However, it is recognised that "over addition" or "under addition" of sulphidising reagent can result in poor flotation recoveries. Thus, control of sodium sulphide additions is an important aspect of a sulphidisation circuit, both commercially and metallurgically. In any plant where the flotation feed is "constant" it is possible to operate at a constant rate of addition of sodium sulphide. In actual plant practice, however, it is difficult to maintain a truly constant feed for any reasonable duration because this implies not only a constant feed-rate, but also constant mineral composition and particle size range. These factors can vary significantly and ideally require corresponding variations in the additions of sodium sulphide to maintain optimum recoveries. To cope with variations in the feed, it is essential to have automatic rather than manual regulation of the sulphide reagent addition. The CPS process achieves this control by utilising a sulphide ion-selective electrode as a control instrument in sulphidisation. The CPS process which uses a selective electrode, enables the sulphide ion concentration in the flotation pulp to be monitored and controlled continuously throughout the stage of sulphidisation.

The demand for iron ore has increased dramatically in the last years and is forecast to remain on a stable high production level for years to come. ItÆs expected that the world economy is facing a stable continuous growth of iron ore to two billion tonnes and more over the next decades (Beddows, 2007). Furthermore it is expected that the existing and known high-grade ore resources will decline, and the iron ore industry will be forced to implement more and more advanced beneficiation plants. As a consequence of the more complex beneficiation requirements, there will be a need for modern solutions for iron ore dewatering that are reliable mechanically as well as cost effective and with high capacity per unit at the same time. Conventional vacuum filtration methods have been the most prevalent in fine iron ore dewatering. Product quality needs, lower ore grades, complex mineralogy and energy costs have resulted in iron ore producers seeking better solutions for dewatering, in particular pelletising feed. New advanced filtration methods have been introduced to the market. This paper describes how these modern methods are answering the needs of the industry. Performance of advanced dewatering technologies (pressure filtration and ceramic capillary action filtration) for iron ore applications has been studied, and the findings are based on both industrial and pilot scale experiences on different materials. For example, the results show that the cake moisture content of iron ore pelletising feed can be optimised more effectively by using modern filtration technologies. By selecting the most suitable and adjustable equipment, the effects of variations of feed material on downstream processes can be minimised and the possibilities of processing more difficult raw materials to high-quality pellets are better. The Larox Corporation develops, designs and manufactures industrial filters and is a leading technology company in its field. Larox is a full service solution provider in filtration for separating solids from liquids. As such, this paper compares the new developments in this market area with the prevailing known vacuum filtration technology, but focuses on a comparison between capillary action filters and rotary vacuum disc filters (RVDF). The trade name CeramecG is used to differentiate the Larox filter from the generic term.

The annulus thickness, for bolts anchored with resin, effects the systems final performance. Recent developments in the manufacturing process of these support systems, coupled with improved resin characteristics, have resulted in design changes to minimize hole drilling requirements and reduce resin usage. The amount of resin to properly anchor a 7/8-SRD (Special Rolled Dimensions) bolt in a 25.4 mm (1-in) diameter hole has been reduced to about one-third of the resin required to anchor a No. 7 rebar bolt (22 mm (7/8-in) diameter) traditionally installed in a 35 mm (1-3/8-in) diameter borehole. More importantly, laboratory and field tests, indicate that higher bond strengths and anchorage capacities can be realized with reduced annulus systems. These factors have a direct bearing on reinforcement efficiency and subsequent roof support performance.

Lemkein seamount located in the west of the Kuwajleen Atoll of RMI is a relatively samll, simple-shaped, peaked type seamount with its base at 4,500 m and summit at 1,452 m water depths. Ferromanganese crusts were identified in the water depth range between 2,000 m and 2,500 m, and they were mostly observed on the northern slopes of the seamount. Among various substrate rocks, breccia occurred most commonly with crusts and formed the thickest crust layers. Average thickness of the Lemkein crusts was about 5 cm. Their chemical compositions were similar to other crusts found in the RMI area; Mn=25.82%, Fe=15.29%, Co=0.74%, Ni=0.56%. Lemkein crusts were characterized by their four distinctive internal layers; 1) Massive Layer 1; 2)Porous, Fe-stained or sediment infilled Layer 2; 3) Massive to slightly porous Layer 3; and, 4)Massive, Dense, Phosphotized, CFA veined Layer 4. Layers 1 and 2 were generally similar in composition, but highest Co concentrations were measured in Layer 1 while relatively higher concentrations of Al, Rb, Fe, and Ti were observed in Layer 2. Layer 3 showed higher concentrations of Ca and P than Layers 1 and 2. Based on the Co-chronography, the age of Layer 1 is 0¡?6 Ma (growth rate = 1.50 mm/Ma), Layer 2 is 6¡?15 Ma (1.75 mm/Ma), Layer 3 is 15¡?27Ma (1.76 mm/Ma), and Layer 4 is 27¡?45 Ma (2.06 mm/Ma). These preliminary results indicated that high Co contents in Layer 1 resulted from slow growth rates; Layer 2 was formed under relatively strong influence of high terrestrial input; and, Layer 3 was probably affected by a minor phosphatization event occurring in 15 Ma.

The mining community is geographically remote and widely dispersed. There is a growing requirement for formalized professional development of members by professional associations, and increasing recognition of the advantages of continuing education and training by both individuals and corporations. Working against these trends are the increasing expense and time commitments required for attendance at conventional courses and workshops. The result is a perceived need for a readily accessible source of continuing education and technical reference on the Internet. The design constraints for an Internet model for professional development include: ? browser compatibility, with any time, any place, any pace accessibility; ? a content presentation model with low bandwidth requirements, appropriate interactivity for examples, tools and reviews, and viewer performance monitoring capabilities; ? formal accreditation of content, presentation and process so that viewer achievements may be formalized in terms of widely recognized Continuing Education Units; ? availability of tools for conversion of source material to the presentation format with minimal effort. A model that meets the design constraints is presented and illustrated by examples from an existing Internet site for continuing education in mining.

THE mineralogy of blast furnace sinter is of interest because its mineral content is one of the important factors contributing to its character. There are so many other factors affecting the properties of the sinter, however, that it is well to mention them here. The proportion and character of the raw materials, that is, raw ores, concentrates, returns, and fuel, as well as the mixing and the water content, all have a marked effect on the physical properties of the product and the degree to which sintering action can be carried on. The process of sintering is a relatively fast operation. In as much as appreciable time is required to carry on processes of fusion in such masses of low thermal conductivity, large lumps of hematite ore frequently remain unfused and partly unchanged in state of oxidation in the sintering process. The kind, the grain size, and the amount of fuel used affect both the completeness of the fluxing reaction and the prevailing atmosphere. The rate of reduction in laboratory tests is not only dependent upon the state of oxidation of the sinter but also upon the sizing and porosity. Atmosphere and temperature affect the state of oxidation of the iron oxide, and the atmosphere alone may determine the ferrous minerals that finally develop. The rate and extent of cooling, the type of coolant, the subsequent handling, and screening all have serious effects upon the type of sinter that eventually enters blast furnace bins. The degree to which actual fusion or fluxing takes place in the sintering operation has a marked effect upon density. A sinter which has been extensively fused by high content of fuel in the batch will no doubt have a higher weight on the bulk basis than one which had a lower fuel content. As high temperatures are required to do this job, the iron oxide under these conditions will be largely magnetite. Sintering at low temperatures to produce larger proportions of hematite means a decrease in the amount of liquid formed and a much more sensitive bonding process. In this case the liquid must be distributed more uniformly and thereby used more efficiently than would be the case where higher temperatures were permitted to prevail more or less indiscriminately. Where coarse ore particles are used in a sinter mix it is not expected that any particles coarser than 1/4-in. can be fused and incorporated in the system to such an extent that the gangue contained within these lumps will have been converted or fused by the sintering process. It is for this reason that coarse ore, returns, or both, in a sinter usually result in a sinter which breaks easily and at the same time may contain some of the original minerals of the lump, such as quartz and hematite. In examination of sinters at Bethlehem Steel Co. minerals such as quartz and corundum have been found, none of which are considered normal associ- ates of wustite or magnetite. Some degree of heterogeneity or lack of equilibrium is not unusual in the sintering process. The differences in specific gravity between hematite and magnetite might be ample reason for poor strength in a not very well sintered mass containing coarse particles of. ore or returns. The shrinkage taking place in a lump of hematite in its conversion to magnetite by temperature and/or atmosphere is appreciable. Sintering of ores as it is carried out is crude chemistry, for the grain size is relatively coarse, the application of heat is certainly not uniform, and the time factor is inadequate for other than partial completion of reactions. Coarse lumps of coke or coal cause local heating around these centers, and fuel which is too fine may result in such slow burning that sufficiently high temperatures are not always obtained. High temperatures are essential to the work required. The Swedish practice of sintering is established on the basis of producing an easily reducible product high in hematite. This is achieved through uniformity of grain size in the sinter mix and close control of the temperature through careful regulation of fuel and sintering rates. This produces a sinter which is very tough in character and which has a high degree of porosity. Although the hematite content is not produced upon cooling by drawing air through the mass, there would be greater possibility of accomplishing this reaction with this type of sinter than is the case in American practice. In the latter, the temperatures are so high that temperature alone converts most of the mass to magnetite. The grains are so coarse in the final product that together with the fluxed condition it would be difficult to reoxidize them to hematite upon cooling. An examination of the iron-oxygen diagram' shows that hematite does not exist above 2651°F. It also shows that there is no liquid in the pure magnetite-hematite system until 2881°F is reached. On the other hand, in the system magnetite-wustite liquids exist at considerably lower temperatures than this. It will be seen, therefore, considering only the iron oxides, that the bonding action obtained in America in sinters comes about through considerable temperature and/or reducing conditions that produce compositions containing even less oxygen than is contained in magnetite or than results from the fusion of silicates. The bonding obtained from the iron oxides is encouraged by the reducing conditions that prevail in the vicinity of the fuel particles in a mass of this sort, where temperatures are above 2600°F. As magnetite and wustite are opaque, they do not lend themselves to petrographic study by transmitted polarized light. The silicates found in sinter and the glass that has not crystallized transmit light and can be studied by these methods in which indices of refraction and other optical properties of anisotropic crystals lead to their definite identification. The index of refraction is the only property that can be measured in glass under the microscope, and this is a clue to its probable approximate composition.

"Electrolytic Manganese Residue (EMR) was used as the main material to prepare cementing material activator for the utilization of the residue from electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) or electrolytic metallic manganese (EMM) production. The effects of chemical activation, thermal activation and mechanical activation on retarding activity and excitation activity of EMR were investigated according to the setting time and activity index of EMR-slag cementing material. The results showed that the EMR exhibited good activating performance after being ball-milled for 18 min and then treated for 1-2 hours at temperature range of 350-450 ?. The optimal properties of cementing material activator were achieved at the weight percent ratio 30 : 3 : 5 of EMR/Ca(OH)2/cement clinker.IntroductionMany hazardous industrial solid wastes such as blast furnace slag, fly ash, steelmaking slag, chromic slag and electrolytic manganese residue [1] are generated n China and their amounts increases every year. The accumulation of the solid wastes during past years is very huge and they could be hardly recycled effectively as a sustainable resource. 2.35 billion tons of industrial solid wastes have been produced up to now [2]. It is estimated that they would exceed 3.3 billion tons by the end of 2015 [3]. On the other hand, the quick development of Chinese infrastructural construction needs more cementing materials. The production of traditional building materials consumes lots of natural resource such as clay and limestone and discharges at least 1 ton CO2 and other pollutants per ton clinker [4]. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new types of cementing materials instead of clinker [5,6]."

SEVERAL new XGa2 intermetallic compounds, Table 1, where X is a rare earth, having the AlB, structure were prepared as part of a continuing study of the magnetic and structural properties of rare-earth alloys.' In the future to excavate sufficient coal for power generation, two dredgers would be required to dig overburden or interseam 70010 of the time and three dredgers 40010 of the time. One overburden system was not adequate for this requirement, making coal production reliability vulnerable. TS5 spreader is the new machine element of this system. The selection of the best type of machine configuration to suit the application was then subject to an internal SECV VE Study, a registration of interest and a tender for two machine alternatives. This paper outlines the reasons why SECV planned the Secondary Overburden System and how the Krupp machine met these requirements. It also identifies the main design features of the machine and its constructability which will allow the machine to be operational by the end of May, 1990.

This report describes the performance of 17 selected water-injection projects producing from Pennsylvanian-and Permian-age reservoirs. Illustrations depict reservoir structure and thickness, and production and injection history. A selected bibliography of publications pertaining to area oil recovery and geology is included. Tabulations of field and reservoir data reveal marked differences in the projects. Increased oil recovery resulted from injecting water in most cases; however, seven projects recovered less oil than the operators anticipated. Oil recovery by water injection ranged from 0.2 to 262 bbl per acre ft, or 0.1 to 22.5 pct of the initial stock-tank oil in place. Major reasons suggested for poor performance include: (1) Adverse directional horizontal permeability, (2) channeling of injected water through fractures or zones of high permeability, and (3) lack of containment of injected water. One 330-foot-deep project is among the first successful shallow water-floods in north Texas. Another project is the first successful Canyon sand-stone waterflood reported in the area. Previous gas injection in two Cisco sandstone projects did not prevent the reservoirs from responding favorably to waterflooding.

Más allá de contar con las certificaciones ISO 9001, ISO 14001, Y OHSAS 18001, la planta concentradora de Cerro Lindo busca ser catalogada como un desempeño de categoría mundial, lo que implica usar la capacidad total del área (procesos, tecnología y talento humano) basado en un equipo de alta performance-EAR, y gestionar de forma sistemática seguridad, salud ocupacional, medio ambiente, costos, productividad, calidad y confiabilidad, además del proceso productivo. En el presente artículo se analiza información recopilada durante la fase de crecimiento, se presentan diferentes etapas en desarrollo y se describen los estudios realizados en la planta de beneficio, a nivel técnico y de gestión, con óptimos resultados de producción, eficiencia e indicadores metalúrgicos.

Standards and Technology for bringing information at the desktop has greatly evolved in recent years. The benefits to be realized depend on how these new tools are embraced at the performer level. A key operating challenge is to ensure collective effort is geared towards the most efficient achievement of identified operating and corporate objectives. Presentation, application and data repository modular software are emerging in successful client server applications. The industrial desktop emerges as the new tool for continuous improvement and innovation in industrial operations. Here, process information, reliability maintenance, process simulation, production schedules, performance monitoring are integrated using Microsoft enabling tools at the desktop. A workflow model is presented to assist in implementing a strategic information system in metallurgical plants.
