"In the continuous casting of aluminum killed steel, the tundish nozzle often experiences clogging problems. Water model studies have shown that the clogging problem is dependent on the flow pattern in the nozzle entry region. In particular, the flow can separate at the entrance to the nozzle, leading to the development of a recirculation region. Although a nozzle can be designed such that no recirculation develops, even a small misalignment from the vertical positioning of the nozzle may render the design ineffective.To reduce the possibility of nozzle clogging, the recirculation zone must be reduced or eliminated. This may be achieved by moving the fluid downwards or raising the turbulence level in the separation region. In the case of a tundish nozzle, it is proposed that this can be achieved by using electromagnetic forces.To generate the required electromagnetic force, two systems are considered. The first is based on injecting a DC current; the second by using electromagnetic induction. Both methods are described in this paper. Order of magnitude calculations are provided to illustrate that both methods are essentially feasible. The performance of each method in terms of modifying the turbulent flow characteristics in the nozzle entry region is then examined using a numerical model. It is shown that both methods can greatly reduce the recirculation zone. A cylindrical nozzle was chosen for the model studies since it represents a worst case situation.On the basis of the model studies, it can be concluded that whereas both of the proposed methods have the potential to reduce the troublesome recirculation zone, the induction method appears to be simpler in terms of practical implementation."

The nature of exploration in Australia is reviewed from its inception to the present time. It is seen as consisting of three phases: the first, prospecting; the second and third, mainly company-based activity. The first yielded the discoveries on which the mining industry was originally built. The great recent growth of the industry has been due mainly to the discoveries of the third. The technical, organisational, legis- lative and other aspects are reviewed. The overall result has been a very great increase in the known mineral resources and, viewed collectively, exploration is seen as providing the principal means of assessing, evaluating and building up the nation's mineral resources.

The mineral dressing research here reported is part of a continuing program by the Bureau of Mines to develop new or improved concentration processes for oxidized or partly oxidized lead and zinc ores. A sample of low-grade sulfide-oxide, lead-zinc ore from Jasper County, Mo., containing galena, cerussite, pyromorphite, hemimorphite, smithsonite, and sphalerite was concentrated by froth flotation and tabling to a grade of 66 percent lead. Because of the presence of a high content of slime-size values, the overall recovery of lead was limited to 64 percent at this grade. Tests to recover the zinc by froth flotation and by gravity concentration did not give satisfactory results. INTRODUCTION Since its establishment, the Rolla Metallurgy Research Center has con-ducted studies of base metals as a part of its overall program (1, 2, 3, 4, 5,6,7).3/ This research has been, and is, directed to beneficiating complex and submarginal ores, to retreating rejects from commercial installations, and to developing fundamental data.

Heretofore, underground coal mines in Alabama have operated under only 60 to 360 meters of cover: however, new mines (at least 5 in the early opening or development stages) will be operating under cover ranging from 600 to 660 meters. With increased rock confining pressures, roof stability problems will become more critical. Initial studies in two 7 ½ -minute quadrangle areas in the Warrior coal basin of Alabama indicate that the orientation of certain lineament and fracture-trace modes mapped from ERTS-1 (Earth Resources Technology Satellite) imagery correlate closely with the strike of joint and fault modes. High altitude (118,000 m) U-2 aircraft data were used to support these findings. In addition, over 50 percent of the normal faults mapped in the study area could be directly correlated with ERTS and U-2 lineaments and fracture traces. These correlations provide clues to the structural development of the Warrior coal basin and may, in turn, be used as a guide to the prediction of roof-stability conditions in advance of mining.

It is deMonstrated that quenching from an elevated temperataupe accelerates the grain boundary relaxation in two solid solutions (aAg-Zn and a Cu-Al). This result is consistent with the proposal that, in solid solutions, grain boundary relaxation occurs by a mechanism of' self diffusion. Nevertheless, an alternative possibilitg, that quenching introduces vacancies into the boundary itself, must also be considered. THE phcnomenon of grain boundary relaxation has been well known for many years,1,2 yet the mechanism of this process is very poorly understood. One of the most interesting suggestions which relates to the mechanism of grain boundary relaxation was that of Ke,3 who claimed that the activation energy for grain boundary relaxation and for lattice self diffusion were essentially the same. The implication is therefore that the elementary step in the two processes is the same. This suggestion is particularly startling in view of the fact that activation energy for self diffusion along a grain boundary is very significantly lower than that for volume self-diffusion. Later evidence5-7 showed that there really are two grain boundary peaks, one which appears in high-purity metals, and the other (which develops at a higher temperature than the first) which appears in solid solutions beginning at solute concentrations in the range of 0.1 pct. Data for silver6 show that Kg's hypothesis is surely incorrect for the grain boundary peak in the high-purity metal, since it has an activation energy of only 22 kcal per mole, but that the hypothesis may still be correct for the grain boundary peak in various silver solid solutions, for which activation energies in the range 40 to 50 kcal per mole are observed. If the elementary step in the grain boundary relaxation process were the same as that for self-diffusion, it would be expected that the relaxation process could be hastened by quenching, 2.c. by introducing a non-equilibrium excess of lattice vacancies. Such a quenching effect has already been demonstrated in the case of another anelastic relaxation process, viz., the Zener relaxation effect. The Zener effect, which occurs in essentially all solid solutions, may be attributed to the reorientation of pairs of solute atoms in the presence of an applied shear stress,' and therefore must take place by means of a volume diffusion mechanism. The hastening of this process through quenching9 has been one way of demonstrating that atom movements in the lattice take place through a defect mechanism, presumably single vacancies. In order to see if the grain boundary relaxation is affected by quenching, it is particularly convenient to compare the grain boundary relaxation with the Zener effect, by choosing a specimen for which both relaxation effects appear. Specifically, a fine-grained sample of a solid solution shows in the curve of internal friction vs temperature, first a peak due to the Zener effect, then a second rise (and eventually a peak at substantially higher temperatures) due to the grain boundary relaxation. The same phenomena are also observable in static anelastic measurements, such as creep at very low stress levels. Thus, for the same fine-grained solid solution, the creepstrain, when plotted against log time, falls on a sigmodial curve with a sharp inflection point, due to the Zener effect, which is followed by a second rise and inflection resulting from the grain boundary relaxation. To look for a quenching effect, static measurements are preferable to the dynamic internal friction measurements, due to the fact that quenching effects tend to anneal out too rapidly at the temperatures at which the internal friction is measured.9 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Creep experiments in torsion were carried out in an apparatus similar to that described by Ke1, whereby a wire is held under constant torque and its angular displacement is observed as a function of time. The alloy Ag-30 at. pct Znwas selected because of the large Zener relaxation that it displays. The two samples used were a "coarse grained" wire with a mean grain size about twice the diameter of the wire (diam = 0.032 in.), and a "fine-grained" wire which had several grains across the diameter. In Fig. 1 a comparison is made of the creep curves at 160°C of these two samples after they had been cooled slowly from 400°C. Curve A, which represents the coarsegrained sample, shows a unique relaxation process due to the Zener relaxation, with a relaxation time, T , in the vicinity of 100 sec. Curve B, which represents the behavior of the fine-grained sample, on the other hand, shows first the same relaxation process as that in A, followed by a turning up of the curve which corresponds to the onset of a second overlap-

A paste technology investigation was completed for non-pozzolanic fly ash from Units 3 & 4 of PPL Montana’s Colstrip Steam Electric Station. The purpose was to assess the feasibility of converting from dilute slurry deposition of ash products to a system using thickened or paste ash to reduce excess water storage in the impoundment, reduce seepage losses, and increase storage efficiency. The investigation included laboratory and field testing to characterize the rheological, geotechnical and dewatering properties of the ash products, an assessment of potential seepage reductions and an evaluation of potential for increased ash storage capacity by modifying impoundment operating procedures. The studies concluded that the conversion project was feasible, cost effective, and permittable. Critical facilities for the conversion project are currently under construction.

The marketability of a large volume bulk material is significantly effected by transportation costs. Hence, it is essential for anyone that deals with minerals or mineral wastes to be able to reliably estimate bulk transport costs. The three types of bulk overland transportation modes that will be discussed are truck, railroad, and pipeline. Contract and private carriage are the two types of truck transport generally suitable for movement of bulk commodities. Contract carriers are those transportation firms that service a limited number of shippers and geographic points, and carry a restricted number of commodities. Private carriage consists of control over drivers and equipment by the shipper, ownership or lease of the transport equipment, and shipment of commodities related to the primary business of the shipper.1 A combination of private and contract carriage may also be used. Depending on the size and regularity of the shipment, rail offers single car, multiple car, or unit train service to move bulk minerals. Both long and short distance pipeline transportation has been shown economically and technically feasible for many different solids such as, mine and quarry products, coal, chemicals, copper concentrates, phosphate rock, and sewage sludge. 2

MANY investigators have attempted to determine the true nature of the internal changes taking place during aging. Merica, Waltenberg and Scott1 were the first to propose a theory of age-hardening. They attributed the age-hardening of duralumin to the precipitation of minute particles of the compound CuA12. Later Zay Jeffries and R. S. Archer2 augmented the above theory by suggesting that the small CuA12 particles acted as "keys" causing "slip interference." Many other investi-gators3 have devoted much time to the mechanism of age-hardening, some corroborating the "precipitation" and "slip interference" theory, others coming to different conclusions because of effects that to them seemed unexplainable by the early theories; e.g., the increase of electrical resistance upon aging, the fact that no change in lattice parameter could be detected during the early stages of aging even at elevated tempera-tures, and the fact that the density did not change as would be predicted. In 1932, Merica revised4 his earlier precipitation theory to take care of these presumably anomalous effects. This revised theory, the "knot" theory, assumes that substantial age-hardening occurs before actual precipitation of solute as discrete particles. The assumed mechanism is one of diffusion of solute atones into groups forming distorted regions which act as "hard" spots and cause slip interference. These "knots" are assumed to have approximately the same lattice arrangement as the solvent.

The purpose of this discussion is to comment briefly on one of the points raised in the paper. The topic is that referred to in the Conclusion 2, in which the authors note a "disproportionate increase in mixing rate" as they proceed from a displacement performed at viscosity ratio 0.998 to one at 1.002. The recovery curve of this displacement, Fig.2A, shows a quite noticeable difference between the two runs in which displaced and displacing liquids were interchanged. This difference is ascribed by the authors to the change in viscosity ratio between the two experiments. This interpretation of the experimental results must certainly be based on rather precise measurements of the fluid viscosities or, at least, of the ratio of their viscosities. The ordinary Ostwald viscometer, employed in the usual way, is only just able to distinguish between liquids whose viscosities differ by two or three parts per thousand. The experimental refinements which then must have been necessary to measure with any precision a viscosity ratio of 1.002 would be worthy of mention. Indeed, one would have expected the authors to devote at least a paragraph to the display of this technique. For the same reason - to emphasize that the details of such unusually critical experimental work should be reported and discussed in the literature — I would have liked to see some comment by the authors on the requirements for temperature control during both the viscosity measurements and the displacement experiments. The temperature coefficient of viscosity of Soltrol C at room temperature has been measured in this laboratory at about - 1.9%/1°C. How much did the coefficients for the fluid mixtures used in the experiment differ from this and from each other Even if the two fluids were identical in this respect, it would appear that a temperature difference of .l°C between them in the flow system would produce a viscosity con- trast equal to that imposed by their composition. Reference to the experimental solutions of these problems would render Conclusion 2 more credible. Published theoretical work on the stability problem contains no indication of such extreme sensitivity to the viscosity ratio in the immediate neighborhood of unity. On the contrary, perturbation calculations such as those made by Chuoke1 and Perrine2 lead to initial finger growth rates proportional to the first power of the viscosity difference. The later instability growth calculated by Scheidegger,3 using the assumption of zero pressure gradient perpendicular to the average flow, is also simply proportional to the viscosity difference. The conflict regarding the sensitivity of the dependence of instability growth or mixing rate on the viscosity contrast needs explicit recognition in the literature. In particular, it would seem that the experimental work reported here should be supported by a more detailed description of the viscosity controls. Further discussion of possible alternative interpretations of the data would also be in order. For instance, is it possible that the unconsolidstted bead pack used changed its characteristics between the runs (due, perhaps, to the handling and inverting involved in the injection of the front) Or, are the data points of Fig. 2A averages from several runs performed in a series in which the two liquids alternated as displaced and displacing fluids? To summarize, it seems to me that the relationship asserted by Conclusion 2 in the paper needs the support of more detailed experimental evidence. REFERENCES 1. Chouke, R. The modern coal mining industry is subject to a vast array of regulations affecting virtually all aspects of its operations. Probably the most significant over-sight role involves the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSH) established by the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, or SHCRA.1 Although complying and coping with SHCRA can be difficult for coal operators, this complex regulatory process has helped insulate the industry from ongoing efforts to extend regulation under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, or RCRA, 2 to aspects of the mining industry in general. The Environ-mental Protection Agency (EPA) has struggled with regulation of mining wastes under RCRA since the mid-1970's, but RCRA itself places most coal mining wastes firmly under the control of OSH and SHCRA. Despite the general exemption from RCRA regulation for waste materials that result from extraction and processing of coal itself, there may be circumstances under which coal mining operators could find themselves subject to regulation under RCRA or a number of other statutes administered by EPA. This paper will review briefly the history of mine waste regulation under RCRA, as well as touch on the policy decisions that led to the exemptions from RCRA regulation. The paper will summarize coal waste requirements under SHCRA, and also will review what operations at coal mines need to be controlled, in order to avoid potential liability under RCRA. In addition, it will mention requirements under other federal laws, including CERCLA, or the "Superfund" law,3 and describe how they may impose restrictions or liability on coal operations for waste or other materials commonly found at surface and underground coal mines.

Por tal motivo, el presente texto señala el proceso de lixiviación en botaderos que Centromin decide implementar en una planta industrial, utilizando como lixiviante el sistema de Nac1-H2 SO4 y la chatarra de fierro como agente de cementación.

"The mechanism of vanadium(V) V ) toxicity is still not fully understood in spite of extensive current effort (1-3). The presence of a vanadium(V) V ) -dependent NAD ( P )H oxidase in cell membranes suggests that at least one of the pathways involves oxidation of NAD(P)H (1-3). Considerable effort has therefore been devoted to finding the mechanism of NAD ( P ) H-oxidation by va¬nadium( V ) (1-19). Recently Liochev and Fridovich (4, 16) provided a critical review of vanadium( V) -stimulated NAD (P )H oxidation by plasma membranes. They out¬lined a mechanism in which vanadium(V) V )-stimulated oxidation of NAD ( P )H by biomembranes involves an O2 - initiated free radical chain reaction (4 ). While the above may be the major pathway for the vanadium-me¬diated NAD (P )H oxidation in membrane-related sys¬tems, some recent results suggest that in the presence of NADPH the flavoenzyme glutathione reductase can function as a vanadium(V) V ) reductase (18). Because of the significance of this result in relationship to the mech¬anism of vanadium( V) metabolism and the novelty of the metal-reductase behavior of a flavoenzyme, we have car¬ried out additional studies on one-electron reduction of vanadium( V) by two other, related flavoenzymes: lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin-NADPH oxidoreductase. These two enzymes were selected because they are known to catalyze a one-electron reduction of Cr ( VI ) (19-21 ), which is isoelectronic with vanadium( V ).The present study also reports on the generation of hydroxyl ( • OH) radicals in the vanadium( V) -flavoen-zyme redox system without exogenous H2O2. The • OH study was undertaken because • OH radicals are known to be generated in reactions of vanadium( IV) with H2O2 (17,18,22-27). For example, Piette and co-workers (17, 22) have studied effects of vanadium(IV) IV ) on lipid per-oxidation and NADPH oxidation and suggested that va-nadium( IV) -induced • OH radical formation may play an important role in vanadium( V) toxicity. Carmichael (25, 26) investigated the reaction between a RNA /VO 2' complex and H2O2 with a view to probe the possible re-lationship between vanadium( IV) -mediated • OH radical generation and DNA damage. He has suggested that in this reaction the • OH radical adds to the C (5) carbon of uracil, causing nucleotide damage, similar to what occurs in the nucleotide /Fe2+ / H2O2 reaction (28) and in y-irradiated aqueous solutions of nucleic acids (29 ). To our knowledge, however, there is as yet no report on ·OH radical generation in any reaction involving the reduction of vanadium ( V) by a well-characterized enzyme, without exogenous H20 2 • The present study provides evidence that ·OH radicals can form in a flavoenzyme-mediated reduction of vanadium( V) to vanadium( IV) and that this process involves also the reduction of molecular oxygen ( 0 2 ) to H20 2 • The H20 2 thus generated reacts with vanadium( IV) to produce ·OH radical, in analogy with the Fenton reaction ( Fe2 + + H20 2 - Fe3 + + OH- + ·OH)."

"Diesel exhaust is a major cause of large number of occupational diseases. Acute and continuous exposure to Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) can cause numerous health issues including respiratory disease, reduced lung capacity, heart disease etc. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) consider diesel engine exhaust as carcinogenic. In large underground metal and nonmetal mining operations, regulatory compliance regarding miner’s exposure to airborne particles especially DPM is a big challenge. Complex mine networks add more difficulties in controlling DPM. MSHA relies on the NIOSH 5040 method for DPM compliance. The NIOSH 5040 method is a shift average based method which inherits some limitations. Due to these inherent limitations of the NIOSH 5040 method the concept of real-time DPM monitoring is promoted in the mining industry. Several real-time DPM monitors have been used by the researchers and efforts still continues to improve their measuring techniques and understanding. Real-time monitoring of DPM is vital to gain understanding of rapid changes in the mine atmosphere. The current study highlights the advancement in real-time DPM monitoring and mainly covers a review of several studies in which DPM concentrations were measured by utilizing real-time DPM monitors. INTRODUCTION Ventilation of underground mines is an important aspect of mining operations. Mining is a continuous activity and the ventilation networks in modern mines change with extended developments. Proper understanding of the ventilation network is a key design factor of an optimum mine ventilation plan. An important task of underground mine ventilation engineers is to provide clean air with sufficient quantity to the underground miners (Khan M. U. and Gillies A.D.S. 2015). The amount of fresh air supplied to the mine should be adequate to dilute the concentrations of contaminants present in the mine atmosphere. In the United States it is estimated that diesel powered equipment is used in thousands of mining operations (Stephenson D. J. et al. 2006). Use of diesel powered equipment is an attractive option in underground mines due to its several advantages over other available alternates. Diesel engines are rugged, dependable and fuel efficient (McKinnon 1999). It is common for diesel engines in heavy duty trucks to have a life of 1.6 million kilometers (McKinnon 1999). Looking at the developments in other energy alternatives, it can be assumed that the underground mining industry will maintain its reliance on diesel powered equipment (Anon 2001). DPM is an important source of mine air contamination in many non-gassy underground mines (Khan M. U. and Gillies A.D.S. 2015). Diesel exhaust is harmful for humans. Acute and continuous exposure to diesel exhaust concentrations can cause several health issues. Some of the health diseases caused by DPM exposure are respiratory diseases, reduced lung capacity, heart disease, and lung cancer (National Research Council. 1981, Mine Safety. 2005). In addition, NIOSH regards diesel exhaust as “potential carcinogen” (Centers for Disease Control 1988) and IARC has declared that “diesel engine exhaust is carcinogenic to humans” (IARC 2012). NIOSH has also declared that the reductions in DPM exposure would reduce cancer risks (Centers for Disease Control 1988)."

This paper reports the results of solution calorimetry conducted to obtain the heats of formation of crystalline FeS04?6.952H20 and FeS04?1.008H20, from. which values were derived for the stoichiometric compounds FeS04?H20 and FeS04?H20. Also included are derived values of the free energies of formation and dehydration. This work was undertaken primarily to fill a need for data for pure, easily obtainable ferrous compounds that are suitable for use as calorimetric intermediates, The ferrous sulfate hydrates meet the essential requirements for this use.

UP to the present, there has been no large coal-producing industry in any of the South American countries. Since colonial times, the great mineral and agricultural wealth of that continent has led the people to activities other than the development of manufacturing industries based on coal; and climatic conditions are such that there has been very little demand for solid domestic fuel. However, there are extensive and widely distributed reserves of coal in South America that would make the development of a modern coal industry feasible. That factor is of the utmost significance now, when it is believed that the South American countries are entering the pioneer phase of a broad industrial development. Coal Fields Great areas of coal-bearing formations of Cretaceous and Tertiary ages occur generally throughout the Andean uplift and extend into the coastal range of the Caribbean region far east of Caracas. Thus the west coast countries have adequate reserves of coal, which include a wide range of types and classes. In the eastern part of South America, east of the Cordillera, as in North America, the coal measures are of Carboniferous and Permocarboniferous ages. The principal known deposits in this area are in the southern States of Brazil. Permocarboniferous coals ranging in rank from lignitic to anthracitic are found in the States of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Parana and Sao Paulo. In the great.interior plateau of Brazil, south of the Amazon River, are extensive areas of Carboniferous strata that may contain coal deposits. There are widely scattered reports of findings of coal in' wells and stream beds in northern Piaui and Goias. In the Rio Fresco Valley, explorers have observed outcrops of two beds of anthracite and have brought to Rio de Janeiro samples from these beds. The Fresco is a tributary of the Xingu River that enters the Amazon from the south, but coal could not be shipped by water since the Rio Fresco area is in the upper part of the Xingu Valley, and there is a formidable series of rapids between that area and the lower level of the Amazon River basin. It is doubtful if coal deposits in this general area will be of economic importance for many years to come. Fig. 1 shows the general location of known coal fields of South America that have been explored sufficiently to indicate the presence of workable reserves. The coal deposits of the Andean region are similar in occurrence and general characteristics, as well as in age, to the coals of the Rocky Mountain region of North America. THE question, what is the best proportion among weight, fall, and speed of stamps, is one which has not yet received thorough and systematic examination. In considering the economical application of stamping machinery, we meet, at the beginning, with serious difficulties in obtaining accurate data for comparison. The weight and fall of stamps vary as the shoes and dies wear out; and this may lead to a change of speed also. Moreover, defects in engines, boilers, or machinery for the transmission of power, may occasion serious losses, which cannot fairly be charged to the arrangements of the stamps proper. Again, the capacity of stamp-mills is directly dependent, in some degree, upon the nature and extent of discharge, fineness of screens, and other peculiarities of the battery. Finally, the hardness and tenacity of the rock crushed varies so much that comparisons between different localities cannot be implicitly trusted. The safest experiments are those made in the same mill, by changing first one and then another condition of working; but this is seldom possible for such conditions as weight and lift of stamps, and only within narrow limits for their speed. We may eliminate of friction, transmission, and generation of power, in the case of stamps, by measuring the power actually developed by their fall. Thus, the weight, multiplied into the fall in feet, and the number of drops per minute, gives us exactly the number of foot-pounds exerted by each stamp. Dividing by 33,000, the number of foot-pounds per minute in one-horse power, we have the horse-power per stamp, from which the effective power of the whole mill may be obtained. Dividing the amount of rock crushed daily by the effective horse-power, gives us the daily amount per horse-power ; and this is the best measure that can be obtained for the effectiveness of the stamps. A complete discussion of the subject would require us to determine the exact influence of the discharge, etc., and the exact resistance offered by different classes of rocks, for both of which points the data are wanting. This paper describes a number of model tests conducted in Plexiglas models to investigate the phenomenon of fracture pressurization. The models were examined with high speed photography while being subjected to explosive loading. At the same time pressure transducers were used to record the pressure in the borehole as a function of time and also along the path of the propagating fracture to measure the pressure at various locations along the fracture as a function of time. Both propellants and explosives were used to charge the borehole. Air as well as fluid filled boreholes were needed to provide a variety of pressure rise rates. On some tests eddy current displacement gauges measured crack opening displacements as a function of time. As a final check high speed photographs taken during the event were used to visually ascertain the location of the fracture at any given time.
