"Sensor based automatic ore sorting technologies are used in the minerals industries to efficiently remove waste and submarginal grade material from crushed and screened run-of-mine (ROM) ore, producing a coarse (typically >10 mm) upgraded preconcentrate at an early stage in the mineral processing circuit. This avoids additional energy intensive downstream processing of this rejected component of the ROM feed, leading to lower unit operating costs and reduced tailings disposal volumes.Test work on bulk low-grade gold ore stockpile samples from Central Norseman Gold Proprietary Limited has been conducted, indicating high gold recoveries as well as high material rejection rates. A financial model, based on these results, evaluates grade sensitivity and identifies a minimum stockpile grade for adequate financial returns. The base case modelling estimates that the ex-stockpile grade (including the fines bypassed fraction) can be more than doubled through ore sorting and that the project will be highly viable with strong cash flow generation at stockpile grades as low as 0.7 g/t gold. The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of delayed blasting experiments at a West Virginia contour coal mine that resulted in smoother highwalls. The 17; were smoother due to reduced overbreak and inherently safer A, to reduced likelihood of rockfall. Reduced overbreak was accomplished by an increase in the highwall hole delays, which changed the effective delay pattern geometry and the direction of burden movement. The blast delays in the highwall holes were 50 to 100 ms longer than the mine's nominal design pattern (flat V, 17- by 42-ms surface delays, 200-ms in-the-hole delay). The burden movement was effectively changed from a 45* angle to 90* with respect to the highwall. The results of the blast delay changes were evaluated using terrestrial photogrammetry to generate vertical profiles at regular intervals. This evaluation showed that delay changes produced generally smoother vertical profiles.

Forecasts prepared by the B.C. Research Council for the National Harbours Board suggest that mineral shipments through B.C. Lower Mainland port facilities will increase more than four-fold, from 6 to about 25 million tons, during the decade 1965 to 1975. The longer term outlook is for a six-fold increase to about 35 million tons by 1985. In 1967, minerais accounted for more than one-third of the total deep-sea traffic tonnage, nearly as much as grain. By 1975, the minerals' share will be about half the total. The principal items are exports of potash from Saskatchewan, and of coal and sulphur from Alberta and British Columbia. Additional exports include copper and other mineral concentrates and propane. Imports are chiefly salt and phosphate rock. Coastal traffic in such items as cement, sand and grave!, and limestone totalled 3.3 mil-lion tons in 1967. They will continue to be of major importance, but do not have the spectacular growth potential of the deep-sea traffic.

Until the early 1960s the world aluminium industry was dominated by six principle pro- ducers with integrated activities from bauxite mining to aluminium production. The growth in consumption of aluminium since that time and the emergence of additional producers has broadened the market for bauxite. In addition the increase in the optimum size of alumina refin- eries has influenced competing metal producers to unite in large joint ventures to minimize alumina costs. From these bases the paper examines present and likely future markets for Australian bauxite; differing marketing phil- osophies for serving those markets; factors influencing successful marketing; and the sources and relative strength of competition which Australia faces.

In an area north of Mowit Ica chip sampling of limonitic outcrops on a regional scale led to the investigation of a number of areas considered to be geochemically anomalous for copper and zinc. These areas were closely gridded,end where geochemical results were favourable, they were subsequently drilled or ro¦titeaned Che results indicated that for copper Lne anomalies were mainly associated wiL_ ironstone formed in areas of faulting. is suggested that copper is able to move considerable distances by ground water movement and is likely to be fixed under conditions of low pH. The movement of zinc is more difficult to explain but it appears to have an affinity for iron and is only deposited in areas having a high pH (i.e. doioiirific scdimet=Cs).

Recent work on decoppering lead is reviewed CUS is formed rapidly even from dilute solutions of copper in lead. The mechanism of decoppering is discussed and an explanation for the retention of metals such as silver in lead is advanced. As decoppering tin appears to be an analogous process, the, Cu-Sn-S system is studied at 300°C.. CuS, which is not an equilibrium product, is found m decoppermg drosses. In the removal of nickel from lead, Ni3Pb2S2 is formed; preliminary measurements show the equilibrium nickel content to be greater than that obtained by stirring in sulphur. Decoppering bIsmuth IS thermodynamically favoured, but is complicated by the occurrence of CuBiS2 The Cu-Pb-S system IS the only one of the four studied where the equilibrium can be calculated simply, as the presence of ternary sulphIde or other phases invalidates calculations based on binary data.

ALL industrial establishments whose operations depend upon chemical reactions use gases. In the simplest case the oxygen of the atmosphere, heated or not, as the case may be, is used, and in other cases, gases which are produced by a special apparatus of more or less complex composition. The manufacturer depends, for the success of his operations, entirely upon having these gases arrive at the right time, in the proper proportions, at the required temperature. It often requires but a slight variation in their composition to make a given process a success or a failure. In most cases the gas used is formed from fuel, and according as variations in its composition are produced by alterations in the manner of charging the grate, not only different, but often directly opposite, results are obtained. The great industrial question of the present time, and one upon which the prosperity of the world depends, is how to get the greatest amount of useful effect from fuel, whether the caloric is used directly or is transformed into horse-power. In almost all industrial pursuits this translates itself into the question of how to construct a fireplace and its adjuncts in such a way that the heat of the flame and of the products of combustion shall be made to produce a maximum effect. Unfortunately, until very recently, except by comparison, there was no means of ascertaining whether the loss of useful effect was 80, 40, or 20 per cent. of the total amount of fuel employed. It seems now strange that there should have been furnaces so constructed as to produce 20 per cent. of carbonic acid in the fireplace, but this has been proved by analysis to have been true. It does seem incredible that, notwithstanding the immense number and variety of furnaces used for different processes, and the great difference in kind, quality, and quantity of fuels consumed, there should formerly have been used for them all, the same stereotyped fireplace, varied only in its dimensions of height, length, and breadth. It is true that, with a good fireman, excellent effects may be, and have been, produced, but the manufacture is here, as in many other cases, dependent on the intelligence of the workman, a very uncertain reliance for capital to rest upon. I. An Outline of the Theory of the Sintering of Pure Metal Powders SINTERING may be defined as the process by which powders bond themselves into coherent bodies, usually, although not necessarily, under the influence of pressure and elevated temperature. For the sake of clarity and simplicity, the present survey will exclude from consideration the sintering of mixed or alloyed powders, with attendant complications, but at the risk of overlooking information of general applicability. Sintering in the presence of a liquid phase is thus automatically eliminated. The sintering of alloys involves much additional subject matter and deserves separate consideration. Since the literature of the subject is extensive and widely scattered, it will not be feasible to consider the contributions individually. Instead, the subject matter will be classified according to experimental observations and theory, and will be presented in summary form. It should be noted that the appended list of references does not constitute a complete bibliography; it includes only those works quoted below. More extensive bibliographies are included in several of the references; see particularly references 7, q, 28, 34, 38, 50, 52, 54 a "Bibliography on Powder Metallurgy" published by the Library of Congress and a pamphlet published by the Metals Disintegrating Co. entitled "The Field of Powder Metallurgy and Bibliography." II. Summary of Experimental Observations The following classified list is composed of general statements of established fact derived from the experimental results reported in the published literature. A few contested observations are included, because of their potential importance; these are labeled as such. Any satisfactory and complete theory must be capable of explaining all of the uncontested facts. Obviously, some important facts may be missing from this list and these may hold the key to the correct explanation of the sintering process, but the possible lack of such material should not deter attempts to understand the subject on the basis of what is available here. The Bureau of Mines has recently completed a contract study of the hazards associated with surface mining.! Part of this effort involved an analysis of surface mining accidents associated with blasting activities. For this purpose, 71 reports of accidents investigated by the Bureau of Mines or the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), covering the period from 1962 to 1976, were collected and analyzed. In addition, blasting accident frequencies for the period 1973-1976 were extracted from the central computer files maintained by the Health and Safety Analysis Center (HSAC) in Denver, Colorado. This paper presents a preview of the findings, which are treated in more detail in the final report.

"The Sydvaranger magnetite mine closed in 1996 due to low iron ore prices and was reopened in 2009. The flowsheet has remained more or less as in the old plant, based upon two grinding steps followed by magnetic separation. The magnetite is free of harmful elements and should be attractive on the high quality market. This requires a concentrate containing less than 2% SiO2, which previously was achieved by amine flotation. Amine was preferred because it could be used with sea water. The use of amine is now restricted by the Norwegian Climate and Pollution Agency. Therefore, testwork to replace cationic with anionic flotation was done. Activation of quartz with Ca or Mg ions prior to anionic flotation was shown by research from 1960 to 1980 to be effective under laboratory conditions. The old research results have been followed up in order to make a commercial process for Sydvaranger. Calcium activation works excellently with all Sydvaranger ores, including the ones containing amphibole minerals, but Ca activation requires the high and not environmentally friendly pH of 12.4. Magnesium activation at pH 10.5 is a little more challenging, because the maximum concentration of MgOH+ is about 100 times lower than that of CaOH+. Fortunately, the major impurity in the main Bjornevatn orebody is quartz, which responds well to Mg activation. The process does not appear to depend much upon water quality, as the silicates may already be activated during grinding and magnetic separation in recycled water. The new process is environmentally friendly, as only well-known household reagents are used; oleic acid or tall oil, dextrin, sodium hydroxide and magnesium chloride at pH 10.5.IntroductionThe processing plant of Sydvaranger Gruve AS (SVG) is located in the port town of Kirkenes in the northernmost part of Norway, 10 km by rail from the high-grade deposit of Bjornevatn. This plant has been able to beneficiate magnetite ore to up to 99.5% purity, as described by Sandvik and Malvik (2001). Using the magnetic properties of the ore and making the most out of its enviable liberation characteristics, the original plant consisted of ball mills and 600-mm magnetic separators. The plant was shut down due to market conditions in 1996 but reopened in 2009."

The placer gold occurrences at Sart Çayl, Manisa, Turkey, the legendary River Pactolus of King Croessus, were evaluated in this study to determine if this deposit contains sufficient recoverable value to justify development and exploitation. The gold occurs both in the upper Neogene conglomerates and the alluvium derived from these conglomerates. The total reserve in the whole region is estimated to be 500 million cubic metres. Samples were taken of the upper conglomerate and in the alluvium in an attempt to determine the amount and the physical nature of the gold. The gold in samples was recovered by screening out barren oversize followed by washing the sand and gravel through riffled sluices. The resulting sluice concentrate was later panned and amalgamated at site. Laboratory cyanidation testing of some samples for control purposes was also done. The average calculated free gold was found to be about 90-100mg/m3 and the size of gold flakes found was quite small. The field as well as laboratory testing of the samples of Sart Çay1 indicated that the potential reserves in this region could only be developed as a sand and gravel operation and the gold could be recovered together with the heavy minerals as a byproduct.

Overloaded blastholes and insufficient stemming are major factors in flyrock accidents at surface metal and non-metal mines, Accurate measurement of blasthole depth, stemming height, and water depth would reduce the overload and the probability of blow-out, flyrock, excessive ground vibration, and airblast. Problems result because current measuring systems are inaccurate and often difficult to used A literature survey determined measurement techniques and blasting parameters prior to 1970. Similar data were gathered for current practices in 11 iron mines, 30 copper mines, and 92 quarries. Most operations used a cloth tape to measure borehole depth and stemming height; approximately 10% of the operations had dry blastholes. Alternate measurement techniques were evaluated and discussed. Candidate measuring techniques with best potential for improvement over the present weighted tape method are disposable tapes or string chains, automated readout tapes, modified sludge level indicators and acoustic resonance methods.

The material is presented in detail on two imaginative maps--one, the Hydrocarbon Hemisphere, depicts the hydrocarbons that have been identified in petroleum; the other, the Heterogeneous Hemisphere, shows the sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen compounds that have been found. All compounds are placed on the maps according to boiling point. The accompanying text illustrates by structural formulas the several types of hydrocarbon and nonhydrocarbon compounds identified, presents some quantitative data, and points out the possible geochemical significance of a number of the compounds. The possibilities of the Petroleum World of the future are discussed as a function of needed research,

With increased levels of automation, capitalization, and empowerment of citizens, the traditional axis of labour versus capital or national government versus capital, upon which the allocation of benefits from a mining project was traditionally based, has shifted primarily to a capital versus community axis. In light of this paradigm shift, it is critical for the sustainability of mining that economic indicators be considered at the pre-feasibility, feasibility, and permitting stages of a project. Such indicators should emphasize the ?ripple effect? of the economic impact of a capital-intensive mining investment on a region due to outsourcing, as well as the diversified spin-off opportunities and the technological advances that can be exploited by local communities.

Currently, the interest to conditioning of cyanide-bearing recycled solutions with high-grade of base metals, in particular, copper has significantly grown. This can be explained by two major factors. Firstly, there are strict regulations on cyanides amount in tails and higher cost of detoxification processes. This problem can be easily solved during the ore treatment using the conditioning of solutions and water recycling. Secondly, the presence of other metals minerals which react with cyanide during gold leaching resulting in high cyanide consumption. The presence of copper is a major problem. Many copper minerals react with cyanide with the formation of cyanide complexes-Cu(CN)2-, Cu(CN)32- and Cu(CN)43-. One mole of copper consumes 2-4 moles of free cyanide. Availability of cyanide-soluble copper minerals has deleterious effect on gold leaching (gold recovery, cyanide consumption, tails detoxification, efficiency of gold elution and electrowinning). The precipitation of copper from the solutions improves gold recovery by CIL. The removal and recycling of cyanide allowed the reduction of cyanide addition to the process. The recycling of spent cyanide-bearing solutions based on the removal of copper and the return of cyanide bound in complex compounds for leaching process is an optimal way of solving the problem of gold-bearing copper ores treatment. By using the technology, an adverse impact onto gold recovery process is eliminated and at the same time reducing the cyanide consumption. Today, processes and methods of high-grade copper leaching solutions conditioning before and after gold recovery have been developed, which combine two ways of copper recovery: as a saleable product and cyanide to recover gold and reduce total operating costs. They are Cutech, MNR, SART, Cyanomet, AuGment, Vitrokele, Hannah and Cyanisorb. At the same time, these technologies have not been studied enough and described in literature. Data on parameters and operating conditions as well as introduction is not available. The conditioning technology of recycled solutions developed by IRGIREDMET JSC allows copper to be recovered as high quality concentrate and at the same time free cyanide regeneration in the recycled solution which is amenable to gold leaching. This technology was commercialized at a mine in Kazakhstan in 2008. The removal and recycling of cyanide does not require additional cyanide and is cost-effective. More cost-efficiency is achievable through selling copper concentrates, closed water cycle without the detoxification of effluents and enhanced gold recovery by CIL and cathode quality.

The manganese ore of Groote Eylandt is a shallow sedimentary deposit of Cretaceous age. There are a number of deposits which vary greatly in ore texture, density, percentage of matrix and thickness. The thickness in the present five operating quarries varies from 1-5 metres. The mine output in 1973 was 3 million tonnes of which 60% was blasted, the remainder ripped and bulldozed. The shallow deposit and its varying thickness create rather unique blasting problems which must be overcome in order to produce a minimum overall mining cost but not necessarily resulting in a minimum drilling and blasting cost per tonne. Future planning envisages the introduction of site mixed slurry explosives following test work and the application of a twin boom single operator rotary percussion drill. The paper outlines the overall developments,present and envisaged practices and the reasons for these changes.

R. L. Stegman and M. R. Achter (U.S. Naval Research Laboratory)—In a study of the surface structures developed in the fatigue of nickel at low strains as a function of temperature, we have obtained similar results.3 As our apparatus permits fatigue tests to be conducted in vacuo, there was no masking of the surface at high temperatures by oxidation so that the structures there could be observed directly. The relatively few broad slip bands observed at room temperature gave way at 300°C to a large number of uniformly distributed and narrower slip bands. At 550°C deformation began to concentrate around the grain boundaries and progressively increased up to 800°C. In addition fatigue strength was observed initially to increase with increasing temperature up to about 600°C due to the effectively increased ductility caused by the dispersal of fatigue damage. The fatigue strength then decreased at higher temperatures as grain boundary cracking dominates. Maria Ronay, W. H. Reimann, and W. A. Wood (authors' reply)— The authors are pleased to note that R. L. Stegman and M. R. Achter reach similar conclusions from their study of surface slip on nickel. However, they would emphasize that their own conclusions are based on what is shown by study of specimens that have been sectioned and that this study also shows that surface slip is not necessarily representative of what happens below the surface.
