Agitation requirements in oxidation autoclaves can vary widely depending on the mineralogy of the feed material and the specific process selected. Before selecting an agitation system it is important that the client specify the desired throughput, mineralogy, chemistry, kinetics, compartments, overall retention time, and the desired oxygen utilization. In selecting the agitation system, the factors mentioned above as well as oxygen solubility, oxygen mass transfer coefficients, and specific power are evaluated. Much research effort has been directed toward open tank systems for fermentation and oxidation processes. However, for high pressure autoclave oxidation processes little information is available. In this review the author's experience in the autoclave industry and some of the available literature are utilized to compare the installed power per unit volume with some of the methods proposed for open tank oxidation. Equations that appear to give results close to that experienced in the industry have been identified. Further work is required in this area to develop a higher degree of confidence in the ability to predict the power required for any given case.

"The Larder Lake-Cadillac Tectonic Zone in Rouyn-Beauchastel area (a 20 km long segment) contains distinct lithotectonic units bounded by artastomosing or sub-parallel shear zones. The gold deposits in the area are located within highly strained portions of E-W striking shear zones. The ore-zones are structurally controlled disseminated and vein-type lodes. They are spatially related either to megascopic z-shaped folds which refold E-W shears, or to areas of intersection between E-W shear zones and late NE-striking faults. Several ore bodies are enclosed within ultramafic rock units or at their contacts with adjacent units. All the lenses are elongated down dip and distributed, both loterally and vertically, ""en echelon"" . The ore zones tend to decrease in size and number away from the hinge zone of the megascopic z-shaped folds.Two main styles of mineralization are recognized at the Astoria deposit and at for most of the deposits in the Rouyn-Beauchastel segments a discontinuous ""Carbonate Ore"" and a more continuous, albitic sulphide-bearing ""Flow Ore"" (terminology used at the Kerr Addison mine).The typical ""Carbonate Ore"" zones are found within strongly arbonatized blocks bounded by conjugate late NE or NNW-striking fralls. The carbonatized blocks display features characteristic of llrittle to brittle-ductile deformation developed in shear zone system. Vein systems in the ""Carbonate Ore"" occur within shear fractures(D R)tension fractures (T), or within brecciated rocks adjacent to NS llrilcing faults. The ""Carbonate Ore"" zones are displaced by numer IU lole E-W, NNE, NW and N-S faults.The ""Flow Ore"" zones are found within predominantly ductile portions of E-W shear zones. The sulphide mineralization is finely disseminated and regularly distributed within mylonitic foliation or associated with veins and veinlets sub-parallel or oblique to the mylonitic foliation, in which case the mineralization is coarser grained. The gold mineralization is a late Archean event postdating the formation of the penetrative fabric, and synchronous with the end of the dextral oblique-slip motion."

The purpose of these opening remarks is to establish a viewpoint, which will form part of the basis for later discussion between panel members and between the panel and the audience. Important issues will be identified. These ideas in the form of questions and answers, hopefully, will provide the necessary background for the ensuing dialogue. Is There An Urgency? We do not believe there is the urgency for immediate control legislation that has been depicted by some Congressional sources, environmental groups, and certain segments of the press. Emissions of sulfur oxides in the United States have decreased 15% during the 19701s, even though the use of coal by electrical utility power plants increased nearly 80%. That trend will continue as the older plants are phased out of operation and are replaced with newer plants, which must meet the New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) requiring the use of "scrubbers" to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 70% or 90%. The present Clean Air Act Amendments of 1977, by allowing the logical progression of economic events- -depreciation, retirement, replacement, and growth--will produce approximately a 50 % reduction in SOX emissions by the year 2015.

Pioneering work at the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has produced a personal computer (PC)-based, software-driven video photometric color sensor for real time process control of metallurgical streams. The video photometer is an inexpensive optical sensor which operates in the visual area of the electromagnetic spectrum and collects color information through plastic optical fiber. The red, green, and blue (R/G/B) voltage components of the color video signal are digitized and characterized through software and then presented as the control variable for software-based proportional-integral-differential (PID) control. This sensor has been successfully employed in the control of a laboratory copper electrolytic circuit. With this sensor, copper solutions were analyzed on-line without the need for sample removal, dilution, mixing or reagent addition, thereby allowing for the real time control of the circuit.

THERE has been much progress in the last two decades in understanding the hardenability of steel. Roughly, the progress has been along two lines, which may be designated as empirical and fundamental. This empirical work has progressed to the point where steels may be manufactured to the desired characteristics quite closely and heat-treatment and application problems can be approached with considerable confidence. Particularly noteworthy among the empirical work is that of Grossmann,12 who has given formulas for calculating hardenability as a function of composition, and the establishment of the isothermal transformation curve by Davenport and Bain.13 The latter does not fall entirely in the class of an empirical study, for while it provides a means of presenting a tremendous amount of empirical data in the form of a single curve, it also outlines clearly the problems that face the fundamental investigator. The isothermal transformation curve shows clearly that the phenomena occurring in the neighborhood of the knee of the curve are those that limit the hardenability of steel. Above the knee of the curve, the product of decomposition of austenite is lamellar pearlite and fundamental progress has consisted chiefly of a detailed study of structure and formation of pearlite, largely at the hands of Mehl and his collaborators.1-5 They have shown that formation of pearlite proceeds by a process of nucleation and growth and they measured both the nucleation and growth rate. However, there is still a wide gap between our empirical knowledge and fundamental knowledge, owing largely to the fact that there is no satisfactory theory of nucleation rate or of growth rate. This paper is being written in an attempt to fill in a small part of the gap. A method was presented recently14 for calculating the velocity of edgewise growth of pearlite using an expression for the carbon concentration that satisfies the diffusion equation. The edgewise velocity of pearlite growth in a plain carbon eutectoid steel was calculated, using linear extrapolations of the ferrite and cementite solubilities. While the results are in fairly good agreement with the experimental facts, the calculated velocity of edgewise growth is smaller at 600°C. than G, the radial growth velocity of pearlite nodules, whereas one would expect it to be larger. In this paper the calculation will be repeated using a new extrapolation for the ferrite solubility, which gives better agreement between G and V, the calculated velocity of edgewise growth. A calculation will also be made of the effect of carbon content on velocity of edgewise growth, and the problems of calculating the effects of other alloying elements on growth rates will be discussed. In recent years, Peabody Coal Company has enjoyed a great amount of success using roof trussing as a secondary support system. Since 1975, over 180,000 trusses have been installed in 12 different Peabody mines with varying geological conditions. Projections from Peabody, and throughout the mining industry, indicate a continuous growth in the trussing principle for roof control. Peabody's primary supplier has sold over 1,000,000 trusses to 50 different mines throughout the country. (1) Roof trusses provide an improved means of controlling difficult roof conditions which, in turn, improves worker safety and mine production. Since the original development of the truss, (2) the only major modification to the trussing procedure has been the addition of the resin point anchor system in the mid-70's. The resin point anchor was the catalyst needed to provide a reliable anchor and create acceptance of the roof truss by both management and labor. Peabody began using trusses in their mines in 1975. For the first few years, most of the truss effort was geared toward determining proper anchorage, spacing, and gathering historical data. In recent years, Peabody's activities have centered on the development of improving trussing procedures. Through monitoring and trussing activities, a number of areas of improvement have been found.

Mining claims must have a discovery of a valuable mineral deposit to be valid. When required, a Federal government mineral examiner makes a determination of validity and recommendations thereof to authorized management officials. The examiner should show whether or not an existing mining operation, or a proposed operation have economic viability. This is accomplished through an analysis of legal entities, land status and use, geologic and mineralogic relationships, and mining, milling and processing techniques considered in an appropriate economic evaluation framework. A framework involves market and market entry studies, reserve analyses, all costs analysis, royalty buyouts, tax structure, discount rate of return, and escalation and risk factors. An income approach to value is then used by means of a simple or complex discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis to certify validity. Whether one claim is owned by a single miner, or hundreds of claims are owned by a large corporation, thorough, fair, consistent, and appropriate economic concepts should be applied by the mineral examiner.

Theory, operational characteristics, and indicated precision and accuracy of analytical methods based on vacuum extraction, equilibrium pressure, and combustion approaches are reviewed. At the present time vacuum extraction at 1400°C and the equilibrium pressure method are recommended for determination of hydrogen in titanium and titanium-rich alloys. UNTIL a few years ago the role of hydrogen in titanium was an unknown factor with regard to its effect on the physical and mechanical properties of the metal. However, following the work of Jaffee and othersa-" it is now generally acknowledged that hydrogen has a degrading effect on titanium and its alloys. The chief manifestations are a decrease in impact strength in -systems and delayed cracking in a-ß systems. Since hydrogen does have a de- grading effect on titanium it is essential to control it within tolerable limits. It then follows that procedures for quantitative estimation of hydrogen are a primary requirement for the industry. For greatest benefit these methods should be simple, rapid, and precise. In addition to having these virtues, methods must be easy to duplicate in both equipment and technique to gain widespread use. After inherent accuracy has been established, the, required precision to make a method acceptable is dependent largely on the nature of the work at hand. The effect of blast vibration on highwall stability is a common concern for many open pit mines. Vibration in such a case is a typical near-field blast vibration situation. Vibration modelling in the near-field of a blast requires consideration of both the amplitude and frequency attenuation of waveforms with distance. Most existing blast vibration models are designed for far-field vibration and do not simulate the frequency attenuation and its effect on waveform shape. With the advent of electronic detonators it is desirable to quantify the effects of blast delay on the amplitude as well as the frequency of blast vibrations. A suitable modelling tool is proposed here. At present, a blast vibration model with double attenuations(amplitude and frequency) has been developed at Orica. The present model simulates the amplitude and frequency attenuations separately using different transfer functions. The amplitude attenuation is modelled according to the non-linear relation between the peak particle velocity (PPV) and the charge weight scaled distance established from the signature hole vibration. The frequency attenuation is modelled with the signal broadening based on KjartanssonÆs transfer function û a linear model for attenuation of waves. The model is capable of taking multiple sets of signature waveforms as input to improve the modelling accuracy of the wave propagation in the geology at a site. The screening effect of the earlier firing holes in the path of a later firing hole is taken into account on not only the amplitude, but also frequency attenuation. The present blast vibration model is suitable for modelling both near-field and far-field blast vibrations. It yields reasonable agreement with measured field data for the near-field vibration examples discussed.

This paper presents several case studies in which a mechanics-based boundary-element program is used to back-calculate the surface subsidence associated with various panels at several northern Appalachian coal mines. The program used in this case study is called LAMODEL, which incorporates a frictionless, laminated overburden into a general-purpose displacement-discontinuity code primarily designed for calculating the stresses and displacements in coal mines or other thin-seam or vein-type deposits. In this paper, the program is used to calculate both the underground convergence and the resulting surface subsidence at five longwall panels and a room-and-pillar section. The fitted subsidence from the model is compared with the field measurements and analyzed. The results from this work show that the LAMODEL program is not as accurate as available empirical subsidence-predictive methods: the expected correlation between the geology and the optimum input parameters is not evident. However, for a mechanics-based program, LAMODEL does provide moderately accurate subsidence calculations, and it is one of a few programs that can even attempt to practically calculate both underground stress and convergence and the resulting surface subsidence.

China is the largest coal producer in the world. In 2012, the coal production in China is 3.65billion tonnes, accounting for approximately 49% of global coal production. The raw coal production in 2012 was 3.8% more than the year 2011. 56% of total raw coal has been washed. The increase in raw coal production also promotes technology to be developed and brings separation capacity become larger and larger in coal processing in China. At present, over 40 extra-large scale coal preparation plants (each plant has capacity of more than 10 Mtpa) are in operation in China, the largest one is 32.5 Mtpa. Heavy medium separation are widely used in new built coal preparation, the washing limit for thermal coal feed lower and lower, the equipment selection tends larger which brings the whole washing system simplified, the local equipment developed and manufactured are more and more used. By discussing designs of several typical thermal coal preparation plants and coking coal preparation plants in China, this thesis introduces the current design of China?s extra-large coal preparation plants, and sums up the prevailing design features and trends of extra-large coal preparation plants.

The U. S. Geological Survey has been actively engaged in work on coal for more than 50 years. During this long period we have released more than 300 publications containing information about coal and coal reserves, including details on the thickness, distribution, and quality of coal, and the structure and stratigraphy of the coal-bearing rocks. We have also cooperated with state surveys on many similar publications. For many areas these reports are the only reliable published data on our resources of coal. During the last several years we have substantially increased our activities above the wartime low. We now have field work in progress, or reports in preparation, on 13 detailed mapping projects distributed as follows: 1. Pennsylvania anthracite field 2. Casselman Basin, Md. 3. Leslie County, Ky. 4. Deep River field, N. C. 5. Coosa field, Ala. 6. Powder River field, Mont. 7. Spotted Horse field, Wyo. 8. Yampa field, Colo. 9. Paonia field, Colo. 10. Trinidad field, Colo. 11. Durango field, Colo. 12. Chaco River area, N. M. 13. Lewis and Thurston County fields, Wash. For two of these areas; the Paonia field, Colo., and the Coosa field, Ala., we have published recently preliminary reports, and final reports are in preparation. In addition, we are nearing completion of a coal reserve study of Montana, and are beginning similar studies in several other states, as part of a program of revising our estimate of national coal resources on the basis of presently available data. Factors Involved in Making Estimates Our responsibilities include detailed field mapping to secure information on areas of outcrop of coal beds, their range in thickness, nature of roof rock, amount of overburden, correlation of the beds, stratigraphy and structure of the coal-bearing rocks, and the preparation of coal reserve figures based on these data. The computation and estimation of resources of coal in the ground, like that of resources of other mineral commodities, involves consideration of many additional purely geological factors that can be appraised best through such regional studies. Regional variations in the thickness and texture of rocks overlying and underlying coal beds, for example, give evidence as to the probable position of the edges of the basin of coal deposition, or may aid in the delineation of sand-filled channels that sometimes cut out coal beds. It is apparent that the detailed field studies, in which data are gathered, are the basis for coal reserve studies, and in our present program these two phases of work are being carried on together. IN the year 1874, when the price of pig-iron was still high, that staple product became the subject of discussion in the newspapers and among those philosophers who are determined to know the "reason why" for all things. The object of the inquiry was to find out why iron did not fall in price as much as some other things had fallen. Indeed, there seemed to be an impression that iron and gold ought to move on nearly parallel lines, for the fact was constantly brought forward that iron then cost twice as much as it did before the war, though gold had returned to within twelve or fifteen per cent. of its former value. After some time the papers, by what seemed to be nearly unanimous consent, reached the conclusion that the maintenance of high prices was the work of the furnace proprietors, who, as the result of their shrewdness, were pocketing enormous profits. No proof was given to support this opinion, and the figures of cost and sale that were produced were of the most general kind, and used in the most vague manner. Visiting the president of the Thomas Iron Company, whose great works at Hokendaqua and Catasauqua, in Pennsylvania, are so well known as the largest and among the best conducted in America, I found him quite willing to meet the vague suspicions of the newspaper wiseacres, by a publication of the figures contained in the furnace-books of his company. These were accordingly given to the world through the Engineering and Mining Journal, and attracted the general attention they so well deserve. Though my own name became connected with these statistics, from the fact that I used them as the basis for the first attempt ever made to calculate the furnace economy of an American works, I can, without the suspicion of egotism, say that the statistics referred to are the most valuable contribution the literature of American blast-furnace work has yet received, for their interest is independent of personal considerations, and due entirely to the fact that they represent faithfully the details of practice in one of the most prominent American works. They are an exact transcript of the furnace-books, and form a body of accurate information of the greatest value to the metallurgical student. The hydrometallurgical technology for zinc production in Bulgaria is characterized by the use of considerable quantities of imported zinc concentrates and several kinds of Bulgarian ones which are quite different in chemical, phase and granulometric compositions. In this connection, 7 sulfide zinc concentrates (Bulgarian and imported ones) were investigated by chemical analysis, DTA, TGA, X-ray diffraction analysis, sieve analysis. The accomplishment of optimal mixing of concentrates and providing stabile mix composition for a long period of time of roasting in fluid bed furnace is a task of primary importance in the technological process control in zinc hydrometallurgy. This can be achieved using mathematical optimization methods.

Complex underground mining problems are increasing as mining depths increase. Many of these problems have been solved mainly by unsystematized trial-and-error methods based on individual experiences. This system of solving mining problems has resulted in over-cautiousness whereby a large quantity of our mineral resources are left in the ground, or not enough caution with a resultant failure of the underground opening. From studies made of physical properties of rocks, large volumes of data have been collected as a source of finding correlation among the different physical tests or among certain rock types. Most of these studies have not produced satisfactory results because the investigator usually arrives at the conclusion that the results are too scattered to be reliable. The reasons usually given as the cause of this scatter are that rocks are nonhomogenous and non-isotropic. Similar types of poor correlation that were being obtained from compression tests in the Colorado School of Mines Mining Research Laboratory led to an investigation of a good method of making a simple unidirectional compressive strength test.

"INTRODUCTION Coal is a compressed mass of heterogeneous, macerated, metamorphosed plant remains that have collected in the earth's crust. Probably no two beds of coal have identical properties, and different parts of the same bed may vary considerably when measured by some of the many empirical tests that have been developed to classify or differentiate the properties of coal. Because of this great variability in properties, the commercial processing of coal to produce coke and byproducts has developed largely as an art based on experience, rather than as a science. Much empirical chemical research, however, has been and is being conducted on coal carbonization, and this work is of practical value in obtaining larger yields of gas and byproducts and in the improvement of the physical properties of the coke.Both ultimate and proximate analyses have been used for correlating purposes. 3/ In the United States the proximate analysis is used for the classification of coal according to rank and grade. The proximate analysis can be employed usefully in the coal—carbonization industry because separation of the combustible matter of coal into volatile matter and fixed carbon is, in fact, a small carbonization test conducted on 1 gram of coal heated in a platinum crucible.Small—Scale Laboratory Coking Tests,Many empirical tests have been devised for determining the coking properties and measuring the yield and quality of gas and byproducts obtainable from various coals. These tests, made on samples ranging from 25 grams (about 1 ounce) to 5 kilograms (11 pounds), furnish information that is roughly proportional in practical value to the size of the sample carbonized. However, the cost of the carbonization test also increases with the amount of the sample, so that for preliminary surveys of a number of coals, samples of 25 to 1,000 grams usually are employed."

Slagging coal gasification process became a highlight of coal chemical industry in China during the last decade. Refractory lining's life of slagging gasifiers is one of the most critical factors for a cost-effective operation. The paper introduces current status of coal gasification in China, lining structure of slagging gasifiers and performance of refractory lining. It also summarizes the major factors impacting on refractory wear in slagging coal gasifiers in four Chinese chemical plants, based on ten years of industrial experience. The utilizability is discussed in terms of cost-effectiveness of high chromia refractories and possibility of the alternatives.
