Laboratory size (5 kg) aluminum killed low carbon steel melts were desulfurized with synthetic fluxes in zirconia crucibles. The sulfur, oxygen, aluminum, silicon, and manganese contents in the melt were determined as a function of refining time and temperature. With a good argon shield and synthetic flux cover, melt reoxidation was not observed. Sulfur removal followed first order reaction kinetics. The effectiveness of calcia saturated calcium-aluminate (12CaO.7Al2O3) based fluxes in desulfurizing the steel melts was evaluated. The effects of initial sulfur level of the melt, weight of the flux (slag), and additions of tellurium, fluorspar, and barium oxide to the melt on the kinetics of desulfurization were also studied.

THE Michipicoten area, one of numerous iron-bearing "Archean" segments in the Shield, contains two main types of iron formation, a normal Keewatin-type, consisting of interbanded chert, siliceous magnetite and jasper, and, gradational to this, a carbonate-sulphide type which contains large de-posits of siderite and pyrite. The carbonate-sulphide type of iron formation bears a direct and intimate relationship to the volcanic development of the area; it there-by affords some insight into genetic problems of Archeanron formation in general. The purpose of this pa-per is to summarize the geological setting of Michipicoten iron formations and to briefly review genetic aspects of recent work in the area. GENERAL GEOLOGY in largely by assorted volcanics and sediments of the Michipicoten series and younger, regional granite masses. (Fig. 1). The Michipicoten series comprises a thick assemblage of mixed flows and pyroclastics together with elastic sediments and banded iron formations. Dry room equipment at Donora Zinc Works is of the design which prevailed at the time the plant was built in 1915. It consists of 11 adjoining rooms, each being 99 ft long, 11 ft wide, and 7 ft high and having a capacity for 1040 retorts. Heat is supplied by steam coils beneath the slatted wood floor and by warm air ducts at the ceiling. Drying practice is about the same as that generally followed in the industry except that, under normal zinc furnace operations, the maximum drying time is 45 days. During certain seasons of the year the drying process was seriously affected by varying weather conditions which frequently resulted in a scrap loss of 5 to 7 pct. Because of these unfavorable conditions, which caused uneven drying and strains in the retorts, increased retort failures in the zinc furnaces were recorded. Regulation of temperature and humidity under all conditions appeared to be the logical solution of this problem. Controlled drying had been developed for a number of ceramic products and investigation of several such drying processes in this area revealed favorable results. Along with control of drying conditions and the attendant decrease in scrap losses, plant operators also reported a material reduction in drying time. Another factor affecting the decision to proceed with this development was the drastic change in market conditions for retort clay. Curtailment of shipments from the chief source of supply made it necessary to proceed with blending of other available clays, but quality of these clays was questionable for adequate retort life in the 24 hr furnace cycle. Rapid furnace testing of new mixtures was desirable but impossible with the prolonged drying schedule. Therefore development of a controlled drying process for zinc re- torts offered the solution to the problem of rapid testing of retort mixtures. Description of Process and Equipment The freshly extruded retort is cylindrical in shape, 58 in. long, 9 in. id and has 1 1/8 in. side walls. One end is closed and approximately 2 in. thick. The moisture content of this "green" retort is about 17 pct which means a necessary removal of 30 lb of water per retort. Retorts are set on the slatted floor of the dry room with the closed end down. The controlled drying process depends upon the circulation of a large volume of conditioned air at low velocity. The Pinglin tunnels are situated within the fold-and-thrust belt structural region in Taiwan, due to continent-arc collision and plate tectonic setting. The pilot tunnel TBM (§=4.8m) became stuck ten times with the standstills to date. The westbound main tunnel TBM (§=11.74m) was buried in a collapsing calamity. The main tunnel TBM shall identify and overcome the adverse geology with high volume of ground water ingress itself. This paper presents our experience and methodology through the adverse geology with Pinglin large TBM.

Mr. Juvkam-Wold's article is a timely and much needed presentation of the method of depressurization to reduce ground- water inflow into mine shafts. The article is very informative and discusses the effects of depressurization upon shaft inflows adequately. However, the article omits a discussion of another important benefit of depressurization: the reduction of potential for artesian burst or, as it is also called, floor heave. Confined aquifer systems (artesian aquifers) can contain water under several hundred pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure. NIOSH researchers conducted a study to compare seat designs on underground coal mine haulage vehicles. The objective of the study was to support prior findings that NIOSH-designed seats, which incorporated ergonomic design features (e.g., viscoelastic foam padding and low-back support), are improved designs. Based on measured levels of vehicle jarring/jolting and perceived discomfort, researchers evaluated four different designs - two in-use and two NIOSH-developed, ergonomic designs. Researchers collected data using a short questionnaire, a linear, visual analog scale, and accelerometers with a data recorder. Results showed that vehicle operators favored the NIOSH seats with added adjustability, low-back support, and improved seat padding over the existing seats. In addition, the measurements indicated all NIOSH seats performed better than the existing seat, under the no-load (worse of two) conditions, in reducing peak acceleration, crest factor, and RMS acceleration. The authors summarize the data collected and operator preferences for seat designs and different foam padding arrangements.

Modern shaft kilns in Europe are fully mechanized and burn cement of acceptable quality at 700,000 Btu per bbl and lime at 3.2 million Btu per net ton. Rotary kilns for cement have increased in thermal efficiency by using exit gas heat for preheating incoming raw material and by recovering heat from outgoing clinker in air-quench coolers. The dry process Lepol or ACL kiln has the lowest fuel consumption, 580,000 to 630,000 Btu per bbl, and very low dust loss, about 1 pct weight of clinker. The Holdebank-Gygi system reaches 720,000 Btu per bbl. The calcinator kiln for the wet process consumes 1.1 million Btu per bbl. IN every country economic circumstances prescribe the method used to produce a commodity at lowest cost. In Pennsvlvania a man's wages for working 4 hr buys a ton of coal wholesale; in Germany a laborer must work 40 hr, or ten times as long. In western Europe, therefore, conservation of fuel is of primary importance, and recent practices of burning lime and cement differ from those employed in the United States. Electrical resistivities for various coal ashes in air and in a nitrogen atmosphere are given over the range 100° to 1,500° F. Resistivity of low-carbon ash in air is very high at low temperature, rises to a maximum at about 250° F, decreases very rapidly with increasing temperature to about 800° F, then decreases gradually to approach an asymptote at 1,500° F. Resistivity of high-carbon ash in air follows this same general trend at values which are much lower and are proportional to the carbon content. After the carbon has been burned off, resistivity of the remaining ash approaches the high values corresponding to low-carbon ash of similar chemistry. Two factorial experiments show the effects of temperature, particle size, chemical content, and compressibility on the resistivities of four fly ashes of widely different chemical composition in the temperature range proposed for coal-fired turbines. Resistivities of all low-carbon ashes tested fall in the range 106 to 107 ohm cm at 1,500° F and should be removable by electrostatic precipitators. Ashes containing carbon in excess of about 8 percent, however, have low resistivity (as determined in nitrogen), especially at high temperatures. Therefore, high-carbon materials may not be collectable in precipitators because the resistivity is below the minimum value necessary for precipitation. Consequently, high carbon residues from partial combustion of coal probably could not be removed effectively at high temperatures.

"The lining of a grinding mill has an important role in creating the conditions for the grinding process. The main purpose of the lining is to transfer the energy taken by the mill motor to the contents of a mill. The power draw curve of the mill, if measured with sufficiently short intervals, describes how well the lining works in lifting and mixing the material to be ground.The power draw curve can also be used for determining the volumetric filling of a mill. This new measuring technique was developed at the Pyhasalmi concentrator in 1989-90. The measuring device with its PC-connections offers an excellent tool for controlling volumetric mill filling, for maximizing throughput and for research purpose (e.g. process studies, mill linings design).The paper describes the new method and the results achieved at Outokumpu's concentrators.INTRODUCTIONVarious methods have been developed for measuring mill load; weighing, noise, etc. Weighing is one of the most reliable methods but installing the sensor to existing mills is often difficult. Besides the load measurement does not indicate the volumetric filling if the specific gravity of the mill feed fluctuates. Noise measurement has often failed with its sensitivity to various disturbance sources.As known, the power draw measurement is one of the most accurate measurements in grinding circuits and therefore it has been utilized in sophisticated control, e.g. in power peak seeking algorithms for maintaining maximum grinding efficiency.About 10 years ago power oscillation measurement was developed at Pyhasalmi concentrator. In this method the amplitude of the oscillation caused by the lifters was measured. The oscillation amplitude and the mill filling has quite a good correlation and together with the power draw measurement it could be used for maximizing mill throughput (Koivistoinen and Miettunen, 1989). The main difficulties in this method were that the dependence between mill filling and the amplitude is unlinear and that the dependence also is individual for each mill.The method developed during 1989-90 is also based on the power oscillation but on its phase shift. In principle level of the material in a mill is measured. The method has been successfully used for maximizing throughput at Pyhasalmi and Enonkoski concentrators and at Harjavalta slag concentrator."

Small scale trials of the smelting of a copper concentrate in the Sirosmelt submerged lance reactor are described. Pellets of concentrate were dropped into the reactor while injecting air-rich mixtures of oil and air through a lance into a bath of matte overlain by slag. This produced a discardable slag and a matte which was converted in sequential stages in the same reactor to white metal and blister copper. Difficulties were encountered in determining the end points of the converting stages but control techniques were developed to allow successful operations producing blister copper. Deportments of minor constituents of the concentrate to slag, matte,metal and fume for the three stages are reported and possible applications are Discussed.

The Windigo Theilson RARE II area has a low mineral potential. There are no mines or claims in the area. The only observed results of mining activities were five prospect pits near Tolo Mountain. Samples from these pits contained no significant assays. The study area contains more than 190 million cu yds (145 million m3) of cinders in 17 cones. Development of these cinders is unlikely because their locations are remote, and other sources supply area needs. The Geological Survey has classified the area as prospectively valuable for geothermal resources. However, there has been no geothermal exploration activity.

"The results are presented herein of on-going laboratory investigations of heap bacterial oxidation as a pretreatment method for the recovery of sulfide-encapsulated gold from ore samples of the Rhodes Mining Lahoca deposit, located in northern Hungary. The ore contains just over 2 g Ault and as much as 6% sulfide, mostly as pyrite. Laboratory aerated column tests conducted at Colorado Minerals Research Institute (CMRI) showed that mild to moderate biooxidation of the finely crushed ore occurred rapidly in approximately three months, with cyanide gold recoveries of up to approximately 60%. The results contrast cyanide gold recoveries of less than 30% from non-pretreated ore. Mineralogical examination of biooxidized residues indicated that the mechanism of biooxidation of crushed ore was related to microorganisms following pathways along structural anomalies in the pyrite grains. Such selective biooxidation is an important result to minimize the biooxidation and aeration time and effluent neutralization costs in a commercial operation.IntroductionThis paper describes the development of a heap biooxidation process for the Lahoca gold project The Lahoca deposit is situated in northern Hungary, at the site of a former copper mining area. Lahoca is a large tonnage, relatively shallow, deposit amenable to open-pit mining Lahoca has the potential to produce I 00,000 ounces of gold annually for at least ten years at its minimum reserve base.The laboratory test work conducted initially by Rhodes Mining NL demonstrated that the Lahoca refractory ore is amenable to whole ore and concentrate oxidative pretreatment and cyanidation. Capital and operating costs, however, for such milled ore treatments were considered relatively high. Rhodes Mining subsequently evaluated heap leaching methods, particularly heap biooxidation pretreatment, as a process route that promised superior economics suitable for exploiting lower gold grade refractory ores.This paper focuses on the laboratory column (simulated-heap) biooxidation test work, particularly the proposed mechanism of selective microbial oxidation, wherein only a small amount of the sulfides are oxidized sufficient to allow commercially acceptable gold recoveries by conventional cyanide heap leaching. Selective or minimal biooxidation of sulfides is considered important to minimize biooxidation time and aeration requirements, as well as acid effluent neutralization costs."

Groundwater Monitoring is typically required by regulatory agencies at potentially hazardous landfills or surface impoundments. Agencies have often required an arbitrary number of wells with limited evaluation of the effectiveness of the network to detect a leak. A Monitoring Efficiency Model (MEMO) has been developed to improve the design and cost effectiveness of monitoring well networks. MEMO 15 an analytical model that simulates the migration of hypothetical contaminant plumes from a site and quantifies the efficiency of alternative well network designs in detecting the plumes. The computed monitoring efficiency provides a quantitative measure of the well network adequacy based on hydrogeologic considerations. The model was recently used to design the groundwater monitoring well network for a heap leach pad at the proposed Beartrack Project.

A Discrete element computer program named DMC @istinct Motion Code) has been developed for modeling rock blasting. This program employs explicit time integration and uses spherical or cylindrical elements which are represented as circles in 2-D. DMC calculations have been compared with measurements on bench blasts in the field with relatively good comparison. Structural rock mass characteristics have a significant impact on any blast and DMC has not, until now, included these effects. This paper discusses a recently added DMC capability for treating joints and bedding planes in bench blast simulations.

The past three years have been the most difficult period in the modem history of the barge line industry. Having withstood the fuel cost run ups of the late 1970s and the imposition of inland waterways system user fees, the industry has struggled more recently with an overcapacity problem of unprecedented proportions. In responding to these challenges, the industry is undergoing important long-term structural changes, with the various individual barge lines pursuing an array of divergent long-term business strategies. This paper discusses these strategies in terms of their probable impact on the industry as a whole, and argues for the survival of a competitive number of large, national, independent barge lines as the outcome most in keeping with the long-term interests of the mining and minerals industry.
