The Lynne deposit is a volcanic-to volcaniclastic-hosted, Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag orebody located in the early Proterozoic magmatic terrain of northern Wisconsin. As of February 1991, core drilling has partially delineated a multi-million ton, near-surface, disseminated to massive sulfide deposit. The deposit is hosted by a gently dipping sequence of fragmental rhyolites, felsic tuffs, less abundant dacite to andesite flows, and fine-grained volcanic sediments. The deposit is broadly conformable With the host rock stratigraphy, but the ore zones thicken and coalesce in the central part of the deposit.

The froth flotation of coal, differing greatly from that of most minerals1-5, is not improved but rather impaired by temperatures higher than room temperature6-10 This phenomenon has long taunted us for an explanation. Gayle and Associates 8,9 reported the lack of relationship between their contact angle measurements and their flotation of American coals under various temperatures. Bailey and Whelan6 stated that the viscosity of flotation reagents, offering some clue for their flotation of British coals at low temperatures, could not be put forward as an explanation either in whole or in part for the effect of temperatures on coal-flotation. In this paper, a froth hypothesis is proposed to explain the flotation behavior of coals under various pulp temperatures. Test work involved the flotation of coals and the frothing of reagents.

In the past several years the "Kelly Bar", an innovative device, which incorporates borehole d-rifling and explosives loading into a single detail, has come under scrutiny and criticism. The practical aspects of the Kelly Bar procedure is not questioned, and the system has been highly successful in expediting the loading of explosives in difficult and unstable formations. There have been a number of accidents indirectly associated with Kelly Bar loading and the point in question has become one of safety rather than mechanical feasibility.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Tintic Standard mine is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. In the preparation of this paper each subject has been presented by the engineer in charge. L. R. Dobbs wrote the part pertaining to tae technique of square-set mining, J. M. Snow the part on geology, and M. D. Paine, the part on ventilation. All of the drawings are the work of H. W. Waterfield of the engineering department. The statistics of the Tintic district ware prepared by A. G. MacKenzie. Each writer has attempted to show the difficulties that arise in operating and the practices used to overcome them.

A MELT of pure electrolytic iron with about 0.4 per cent. sulfur and 7 per cent. manganese was prepared in connection with a study of inclusions in iron. The alloy darkened rapidly when etched with a 10 per cent. alcoholic solution of nitric acid, and microscopic examination revealed the presence of a semimartensitic, semi-Widmanstättian structure (Figs. 1 and 2) closely resembling the structures found by Benedicks in his artificially prepared "meteoric iron." 1 The structures found by Benedicks were readily explained by the presence in his alloy of the two well known iron-nickel solid solutions, taenite and kamacite, and of their eutectoid (?) aggregate, plessite. By analogy, one would infer the existence of similar phases in the iron-manganese alloy just described, such as inference being strengthened by the similarity displayed in many ways by nickel and manganese in their effects on iron. IRON-MANGANESE ALLOTS ARE REGARDED AS HOMOGENEOUS Heterogeneity of iron-manganese alloys has not been recognized heretofore, judging from the data of standard metallographic books and those of original papers. In fact, iron and manganese are quite generally regarded as completely miscible in the solid state. Dr. Rosenhain,2 for example, writes: Alloys of group (a), of which those of gold-silver, iron-manganese, and copper-nickel are examples, when allowed to crystallize sufficiently slowly to attain their condition of final equilibrium, present a microstructure exactly similar to that of a pure metal-the homogeneous character of the molten solution is in that case so completely maintained that the microscope cannot detect the presence of any second constituent.

Since publication of the paper on the composition of California oilfield waters by Jensen (6)3/ in 1934 the only other information on the subject was published recently by Chave (4). To supply needed information on the composition of California waters in areas of current drilling activity, the Federal Bureau of Mines collected formation water samples for analysis. Thirty-eight samples from oil-and gas-producing formations in 12 fields located in Ventura, Kern, Glenn, and Colusa counties were analysed by the Bureau's San Francisco Petroleum Research Laboratory. The samples were selected particularly from fields where the water composition was not well known or where interpretation of electrical logs has been difficult and the interpretation may be affected by unusual composition of the water. These samples were obtained from rocks ranging in geologic age from Cretaceous to Upper Pliocene. Fifteen constituents of these waters were determined including sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, strontium, barium, lithium, chloride, iodide, bromide, carbonate, bicarbonate, sulfate, borate, and residual acidity. These analyses are the first to be published on California oilfield waters in which determinations for potassium, strontium, bromide, iodide, boron) and naphthenates were made on a significant number of samples. The electrical resistivities of tae samples were determined at 75° F. and 175° F.

"The demand for high purity precious metals began with certain industrial applications having uncompromising requirements for quality and performance. As industrial uses proliferated and as the jewelry industry became increasingly sophisticated, the demand for high purity gold has reached the point where 99.99% is now the standard in the marketplace. A similar evolution is expected for other precious metals.In this paper, we examine both the production and use of high purity precious metals, specifically gold, silver, platinum and palladium. After defining what is meant by ""high purity"", we discuss the various analytical techniques used for measuring impurity concentrations. Next, we review process strategies employed by extractive metallurgists to produce high purity precious metals. Lastly, we describe some of the principal applications for high purity materials including thick films, thin films, bonding wire, thermocouples and jewelry manufacture.Precious metals have unique physical properties that, despite their expense (and the ever-continuing search for more economical alternatives), make substitution difficult if not impossible. These physical properties are dramatically affected by small concentrations of certain impurities. As long as manufacturers continue to demand quality and performance, there will be a need for high purity precious metals.IntroductionIn the precious metals industry, the qualifier ""high purity"" describes any specification over and above commodity grade. High purity specifications delineate lower limits on overall metal purity or upper limits on individual impurities or both. Sometimes, if these special requirements become commonplace, either because of improved refining technology or because of market pressures, yesterday's ""high purity"" material becomes tomorrow's commodity. This transition is now occurring with gold bullion and probably will soon occur with platinum and palladium as industrial use of these materials grows."

The phosphate ore sample was taken from the iron tailings after recovering most of magnetite by magnetic separation in Longlin, Yunnan Province of China. Batch flotation tests had been conducted to upgrade the phosphate concentrate by conventional fatty acids reagents under 70% -75 µm of the particle size; however, the unsatisfied results (P2O5 grade of 27.84% and recovery of 49.25%) were obtained. Also there are a large amount of slimes trapped in the concentrate and high-dosages consumption of reagents, for example, more than15 kg/t soda ash and 2 kg/t sodium silicate at only one-staged roughing. Based on the analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the sample, most of gangues are clay, quartz, and chlorite, which may easy to over-grind and deteriorate the flotation process either on reagents consumption or slurry fluidity or viscosity. A hydro-cyclone had been introduced to pre-concentrate the phosphate ore by scrubbing the slime before flotation, which can result obviously in reducing the dosages of soda ash from 15 Kg/t to 4 Kg/t, and raising the grade of P2O5 in the concentrate from 27.84% to 36.13% at the expense of about 4% recovery of P2O5. They also substantially reduced the time of sedimentation of concentrate after flotation from ~10 to ~1 min. In this paper, the effects on the recovery of P2O5 by the different dosages of flotation reagents with or without de-sliming were studied, with the objective of determining the different effects on the functions of flotation reagents by slime during flotation. This is the 12th year for this column and the 11th in which the royalty data have been tabulated. This year adds 20 to 30 new entries. There are, however, some deficiencies that the readership hopefully will fill. The most common mineral commodity is construction aggregates - either sand and gravel or crushed stone. There are several states where no royalty information was available for either commodity. Readers can help share information about these missing states, so next year there will be fewer states without information. Severn Brown again sent helpful information from the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC). The summer 1992 issue of PDAC Digest recommended"... the most useful technical paper ever published for economic geologists...." "Net smelter return models and their use in the exploration, evaluation and exploitation of polymetallic deposits" was written by R. Goldie and P. Tredger (Geoscience Canada, Vol. 18, No. 4, pp. 159-171). Last year's column described leasing practices in Russia. Some new information has been gathered since then. Kirill Kavun is the managing director of the International Geoeconomic Center in Moscow. He sent two publications from 1992-"Regulation on the procedure of licensing the use of the subsurface," and "Law of the Russian federation on the subsurface." Both are supplements to the magazine Mineral Re¬sources of Russia, Economics and Management.

Anniversaries are supposed to be times of celebration, and I truly believe that we have something to celebrate on this anniversary. THE elements silicon and germanium are not metals within the usual, intuitive association of the word, nor are they so within a stricter definition based on the electronic binding. Two properties associated with metals are plasticity and high electrical conductivity. These elements crystallize in the diamond cubic structure, an arrangement apparently not very favorable to slip, and are therefore brittle rather than ductile. Their electrical conductivity is not like that of metals the atoms are locked together by the covalent bond, which in pure and perfectly arranged material leaves but few electrons free to act as electrical carriers.† In further contrast to metals, their electrical conductivity can be greatly increased by raising the temperature. Yet silicon and germanium are not ideally nonmetallic. They are hard, solid, and possess a metallic luster. They exhibit that peculiar brand of electrical conductivity conveniently termed "semi- conduction," wherein, as shall be seen, lies much of their importance. Both, but silicon in particular, are important components in real metallic alloys and the methods of their reduction and preparation lie clearly in the province of the metallurgist. From their duality of physical and chemical properties, silicon and germanium, along with such elements as boron, diamond, gray tin, selenium, antimony, and arsenic, are considered semimetals or metalloids. Through the use of structural analysis programs such as Unwedge and considering the shear strength of applied fibrecrete it can be shown that fibrecrete can provide a higher factor of safety in a ætypicalÆ underground development excavation than standard rock bolts. This paper describes the progression of ground support from an æas requiredÆ component of mining to the use of bolts and surface support as a mandatory requirement. With the mandatory requirement for surface support, fibrecrete has been considered and applied as a secondary feature but simple analysis and practical observations indicate that it may be considered as primary support. The key elements to its implementation are: When is it safe to work under fresh fibrecrete and how do we practically determine this? How much ground support does fibrecrete provide? How can we reduce the cost of fibrecrete? An examination of these questions indicates fibrecrete can be much safer,less expensive and quicker to install than normal ground support elements. This paper explores practical examples from sites where significant benefits have been achieved by mine operators.

For ageing open pit mining operations where the economic viability of another pushback is questionable, mine life can be extended by increasing the wall slope. If the steepening is started where ore intersects the pit wall, the capital outlay for waste stripping is minimal. Such a venture must be conducted safely, and a basic requirement would include loading equipment capable of working remotely. In the application described, alternatives in the choice of loader included equipment available on site, or the purchase and assembly of used equipment. Only electric cable shovels were in use at the operation, and it was thought that these would be more capable of digging high muck piles at the productivity demanded by an increasingly efficient mill, and in a challenging environment less suited to a rubber tired loader or hydraulic front shovel. A decision was made to convert an older electric cable shovel to remote controlled operation and to include the application of semi-robotic control. The conversion was completed successfully and is described, along with methods developed for remote operation of a shovel, and the application of various sensors for semi-robotic operation. A plan of operations to mine out several completed double benches and make two quadruple benches with wide catchment berms is depicted. On completion of this task, the working benches developed would be wide enough to operate at near full production. Prior to moving the remote controlled shovel back into the pit, a large wall instability became active, eventually closing the operation. The instability could have been safely mined using the remote controlled shovel.

In a state-of-the-an review of predictive methods for longwall support load calculation, special respect is paid to those techniques which enable actual roof conditions and local lithology of strata to be involved. Principal systems of roof examination include the borehole perforation test and seismic velocity measurements. Roof strata stability is related to caveability classifications and roof inclination due to subsidence. The critical analysis of both load resistance prediction methods and roof stability classifications shows that each has its own value of reliability level. The present research opportunities analysed underline the significance of developing fully reliable prediction techniques as needed by the coal industry.

Introduction The mine winder is an essential element in the mining of ore in deep level mines and therefore requires a high degree of reliability to avoid interruption of production. Failure of any component on a winder may also be dangerous and expensive to repair. The larger the failure the larger the stoppage. The failure of a winder drum is the ultimate catastrophe, not only because of the cost of replacement, but also because of the lead time in procuring a new drum. Today these types of failure are not as common but many failures have occurred in the past and even today many an old winder is con- sidered for a new and often more arduous duty. As far back as the turn of the century a lot of information had been gathered to try and clear up the complexities of the multi- layering effect of coiling rope under tension onto a drum. Before comparing results obtained by various researchers the nature of the pressure distribution between rope and drum due to multi-layering will be discussed briefly.

FOR the last 15 years lead has been the standard material for anodes in electrolytic zinc production and it has been generally accepted that this lead should be as free as possible from impurities. Laistl says, "Next in importance to the purity of solution is the purity of the electrodes and tank lining material. The purest lead obtainable should be used for anodes." The same conclusion is expressed by Ingalls2 and by two German investigators who say that experiments have demonstrated that the purer the lead, the greater is its resistance to corrosion during electrolysis.3 Pure lead, however, while the best material hitherto available for anodes, is not entirely free from objection. The plain lead anode gradually disintegrates under electrolysis, so that the life of an anode, say 1/4 in. thick, is frequently not more than two years. Part of the lead from the anode finds its way to the cathode, lowering the purity of the deposited zinc and decreasing the hydrogen overvoltage. The rest of the lead that comes from the disintegration of the anode goes into the manganese dioxide which is precipitated in the cells, rendering unsaleable what might otherwise be a valuable by-product. Yet a further disadvantage of plain lead anodes comes from their tendency to bend or buckle during electrolysis, as a result of intercrystalline oxidation. This makes it necessary to use a fairly aide spacing between anode and cathode to avoid short circuits, and thus leads to a higher power consurnption than would otherwise be necessary. The power consumption is also affected by the high decomposition voltage at a lead peroxide surface.

The structure of GaAs-Ge heterojunctions prepared by a back-melting process was studied by X-rav diffraction, melallographic, and electron-micro-analyzer techniques. The boundary region between the GaAs and the germanium was found to consist of a four-layered band. A discontinuity between the two inner bands was brought about by solidification occurring simultaneously from the GaAs and the germanium side. The junction material OH either side of the central discotinuity was found to have grown as a single Crystal with the orientation of the parent substrate. It was found essential to determine the GaAs-Ge phase diagram. This was accomplished by a series of alloys containing 0 to 40 wt pet GaAs. Over this range the diagram is a simple eutectic with the eutectic point at 74 wt pet Ge and 845 C. The limiting- solubility of Coils in germanium was found to bc less than 5 wt pet. The Kossel divergent-beam X-ray technique was used to study orientation relationships across the boundary lager. A great deal of effort has been recently expended on the electrical properties of heterojunctions. Little attention, however, has been given to the metallurgical variables which may be of importance in the formation of the junctions. The present work was undertaken to investigate some of the more pertinent metallurgical aspects of interface-alloyed GaAs-Ge heterojunctions. Such parameters as solidification processes, composition gradients, orientation effects, and the accommodation of crystal structures have been the objects of study in this program. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Phase Diagram. The phase diagram of the GaAs-Ge pseudobinary system was determined by means of cooling curves. A Bridgeman furnace was employed with the center section maintained at 1200°C and the upper section at 800°C. Melts varying from 0 to 40 at. pct in GaAs content were used. Each charge was incapsulated under a two-thirds atmosphere of argon in a carbon-coated quartz tube. Five min in the furnace hot zone provided rapid melting and homogenization. The capsule was then removed to the cooler portion of the furnace. Cooling times were of the order of 3 min. The resulting homogeneous microstructure indicated that equilibrium conditions were obtained by this procedure. Formation of Heterojunctions. Rectangular parallelepiped single-crystal samples were cut with the large faces of either the (l00), (110), or (111) orientation. IT is generally recognized that "low temperatures" have a definite effect on the properties of metals and alloys. Furthermore, it is also generally understood that the effect is decidedly adverse. The possibility that the same low-temperature treatment might be employed for the purpose of improving certain properties of the .alloys has received less attention until recently, and the experimental and theoretical knowledge consequently is meager. The effect of low temperatures may be studied in two ways: by studying such properties as tensile strength, hardness, impact resistance, etc., at low temperature, and by studying the properties of alloys at room temperature after these alloys have been subjected to a low-temperature treatment. Even in the latter case, certain properties will differ materially from the same properties obtained on identical material but without cold treatment. In other words, subjecting alloys to cold treatment results in an irreversible change in mechanical properties. Changes of this character are usually indications of the appearance of a new phase or phases, and would be likely to occur in alloys which, either by virtue of their composition or by heat treatment, are retained at room temperature in a metastable condition. Consequently, studies of the effect of low temperatures logically should be conducted from the physicochemical point of view, since the results of such studies not only would furnish metallurgists with interesting theoretical data but would clearly indicate the classes of alloys that would hold promise of improvement, and, possibly, of new applications. As the present investigation deals with chromium and chromium-nickel alloys of iron of the stainless variety, it has been thought desirable to present the data concerning low-temperature properties of these alloys, available from the most recent and most comprehensive work of H: S. Cameroon's mining industry continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. The value of petroleum output was estimated at $1 billion.2 The 1982 gross domestic product (GOP) was approximately $8.4 billion. During 1981, crude oil export revenues increased in value 30%, comprising approximately 56% of Cameroon's total export earnings. The 1982-87 5-year plan emphasized, hydrocarbon and agricultural development and targeted the exploitation of bauxite and clay deposits. New petroleum legislation was promulgated on November 26, 1982. Public Law No. 82-20 detailed hydrocarbon companies' obligations concerning oil and gas discoveries and exploitation. In general, the Cameroon Government has participated in joint ventures with private companies and has levied a 57.5% petroleum tax plus adjustable royalties. Exploration expenses were paid by concession holding companies, and the Government in the past has reimbursed 50% of expenses under certain conditions.
