The selectivity of ion-exchange sites varies with the matrix of the polymer, the nature of the site. and the method of application. The effect of these variables on the recovery of uranium is examined. with particular attention to vinyl pyridine and to symmetrical and asymmetrical quaternary ammonium sites. The effect, on the loading. of high concentrations of chlorides in the liquors is discussed. and other components of the liquors that may cause fouling of the resin are also considered. The discussion is supported by the results of tests conducted on various types of resins. The economics of the process is discussed briefly.

"Comparative tests of the conventional Turam survey configuration and an alternative configuration called the Tx-parallel configuration were conducted at the McClean uranium deposit in northern Saskatchewan. Both configurations detected the known conductors at the site but the alternative configuration demonstrated its particular effectiveness in the reconnaissance role. This effectiveness results from the fact that the length of Tx-parallel traversesis controlled only by the length ofthe transmitter and not by its power. In addition, the field strength along a Tx-parallel traverse is uniform unless the traverse approaches the end of the transmitter. This freedom from a strong gradient of the primary field along a Tx-parallel traverse eliminates the gradient-induced anomaly shifts which are common in conventional Turam operations. The locations of each of the McClean conductors, that were obtained from the Tx-parallel profiles, werein better agreement with the locations known from drilling than were the locations obtained from the conventional profiles. However, the conventional profiles gave better estimates of the conductance of the targets.The results obtained over the McClean conductors indicate that current gathering has a strong influence on Tx-parallel results with consequent unpredictable influence on depth and conductance estimates. However, the depth estimates obtained from the Tx-parallel data appear to be in good agreement with the known depth of the McClean south conductor. The Txparallel results provide shallow estimates of the depth of the McClean north conductor which suggest that the fracture zone above the graphitic conductor is a significant conductor as was also suggested by earlier VLF surveys.Comparison with the wide range of published geophysical test surveys for the McClean site showed that apart from the work required to lay the transmitter, the Tx-parallel mode of operation of a Turam exploration system is operationally very similar to a moving source Slingram type of survey. At the McClean test site, it provided the same depth of exploration as a conventionally deployed fixed loop transmitter."

"Engineers and developers have witnessed the growing popularity of deep basement structures as components of urban commercial and residential developments. This is often attributed to inadequate surface parking facilities in urban centres and a somewhat popular belief that underground parking facilities improve both commercial and aesthetic values of urban structures. For many years, diaphragm walls and sheet pile walls have been widely accepted as effective deep excavation support systems for basement construction in urbanised zones. However, these are now being replaced by bored pile retaining walls as preferred earth retention systems of choice on many projects for several reasons, which may include economy, faster installation process, reduced space requirement for machinery and ancillary equipment, flexural rigidity and axial capacities.However, there are complexities associated with the use of bored pile retaining walls on urban developments. These include; limitations due to vertical and horizontal installation tolerances, which is a major issue when wall is required to provide groundwater cut-off for multi-level basements as tolerances are difficult to achieve for deep piles, uncertainty associated with the prediction of wall axial capacity as piles are rarely tested, difficulties in using temporary props as wall restraint due to restricted working spaces in urbanised zones and difficulties in adopting ground anchors as restraint due to the existence of adjacent sensitive structures in built-up areas. Such complexities have resulted in cases of failure, non-serviceability and abandonment of basement construction schemes. Therefore, overcoming the intricacies associated with the application of bored pile walls is becoming a priority to the present day basement engineer.This paper is centred on the numerical modelling, design, construction and monitoring aspects of four recent case histories of multi-level basement and marine engineering construction schemes in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, which involved the use of bored pile retaining walls. The paper highlights the various customised approaches and innovative novel solutions adopted on the sites, to mitigate risks and ultimately overcome the intricacies associated with the earth retention techniques. Simple empirical equations for developing the geometry of secant pile walls for effective groundwater cut-off are presented and validated. An alternative approach for predicting axial capacities of bored pile walls is also presented; this is shown to be considerably less conservative than a common routine design approach, while also in good agreement with observations made in a recent series of laboratory-based scale model tests."

The Mitchell Creek Landslide is a large, structurally controlled, complex bedrock instability located in northwestern British Columbia. Characterization of the landslide using aerial photograph, exploration geology, and geotechnical investigation data has been completed allowing the development of a three dimensional conceptual model of the landslide domains and slope behaviour. Three domains have been identified in the landslide, from top to bottom: the Sliding domain, a relatively intact slab slowly sliding into the valley; the Transition domain, located in the mid slope of the landslide and showing evidence of significant extension and continuing to subside and displace into the valley; and a Toppling domain, at the toe of the landslide in an area of overturned foliation. Movement is greatest in the Toppling domain, with long term estimated rates of movement up to 4 times that of the Sliding domain; the Transition domain exhibits the greatest range of displacement rates, with average long term values approximately double the slower Sliding domain. This paper documents the results of numerical modelling of the Mitchell Creek Landslide with variation in geomechanical properties, basal rupture surface configuration, structural fabric, and pore water pressure conditions. The locations of internal shear surfaces within the landslide have been estimated from surface scarps, structural fabric orientation, and borehole monitoring data. The performance of each numerical model was evaluated against observed behaviour of the landslide. The configuration and properties of the basal rupture surface were identified as critical to model behaviour, as was spacing and location of internal structures.

Near Bunker, Mo., in the New Lead Belt, Ozark Lead Co. operates a 6000 tpd lead-zinc mine. Mined ore is transported to the surface in three mechanized and automated steps. The mine is developed by a rectangular-shaped sublevel haulage drift 15 ft high by 28 ft wide, driven on strike below the ore zones. Ore transfer raises were driven from the sublevel at locations near the shaft, 1500 ft distant, and on subsequent 1000 ft centers. These 6 x 5-ft raises are slashed to obtain maximum storage below dump points. These dump points are located on each mining level and are of steel and concrete construction. Spiral 12 X 24-ft inclines driven from the sub-level provide access to these levels for equipment and mine utilities.

Use of the Weisseizbevg goniometer for the study of the morphology of whisker crystals and transfer of the results to a stereograplzic projection are described. While in almost all instances a complete and rapid solution is obtained with a purely gaphical treatment, an absolute analytical treatment applicable to difficult cases is given. Examples are given for determination of growth direction and external features of a crystal, for detection of 'twintzittg, and for establislting the orientation relntionships in a kinked whisker crystal. We give here a method for the use of the Weissen-berg goniometerl" in the study of orientation relationships in "whisker" (micro) crystals3-8 and direct transference of the data to the stereographic projection. The operations are straightforward and require no involved calculations: in almost all cases solely graphical treatment is adequate. In a few complex instances, a more exact analytic method may be required. In the method, not only are equatorial reflections of an oscillation photograph used, but also those on higher layer lines, or those not occurring on a recognized layer line. Such reflections off the zero level are often essentialy to detect the presence of twinning. The method is particularly suitable for examination of whisker crystals since the axial or growth direction is almost always one of high symmetry, permitting a more restricted oscillation range to obtain the necessary reflections and an accordingly shorter exposure time. The method is also applicable when there is no lattice-related external symmetry, and is as well able to identify external crystal surfaces, when such exist, with the aid of an optical beam. Thus growth direction, identification of lateral faces, twinning, and orientation relationships in a kinked crystal can be established. A test for the Eshelby twist6-8 can readily be made. The method can be used for orientation, for structure analysis, and as an aid in the identification of an unknown crystal. Moving-film techniques have previously been employed variously for crystal-orientation studies.1,2,9-13 In particular, use of the Weissenberg method for orientation determination has been reported by Wooster and wooster.14 While their method derives the same data as here described, it differs in depending on the tracing of constant p streaks, a less than dependable phenomenon with small specimens, a few microns or less in cross section. The Laue method can and has been used for orientation studies of microcrystals,15 e.g., 2 p in cross section, but requires the extreme intensity and concentration from a microfocus tube to obtain reasonable exposure time. PRINCIPLES OF THE PRESENT METHOD Consider a crystal of random orientation with respect to the oscillation axis in a Weissenberg goniometer. Its diffraction pattern need not necessarily result in recognizable layer lines. In Fig. 1, a stereo-graphic projection of the reference sphere is given with the equatorial plane XZ normal to the oscillation axis Y, and the X-ray beam directed from X towards 2. The great circle ZZ is then normal to the beam, and the axes are right-handed. The New Jersey Zinc Co. successfully holed through a 2 ½ -mile haulage tunnel connecting its new Ivanhoe shaft with the Van Mater Shaft at Austinville, Va. This 8 x 10-ft cross-section tunnel was driven from both ends and met at a point approximately a mile from one shaft and a mile and a half from the other. In order to make certain that the faces met accurately on line and grade it was necessary to refine conventional mine surveying practices. The mines that are serviced by these shafts are located in the southwestern part of Virginia approximately midway between Roanoke and Bristol at the west foot of the Blue Ridge. While the presence of lead-zinc sulfide ores has been known in this area for more than 200 years, it was in 1902 that New Jersey Zinc Co. acquired the Austinville property, which has been in constant operation since that time. About ten years ago the company undertook an extensive diamond drilling program at Ivanhoe several miles to the southwest. This program was successful in locating sufficient ore to justify the purchase of a number of the properties in this area and plans were made to develop the new orebodies. The discovery of this ore as well as substantial additional reserves at Austinville resulted in a decision by the company to increase its daily milling capacity to 3000 tons, of which about 1000 tons would be supplied from the Ivanhoe mine.

Fundamental choices in flocculant selection often come down to the lower cost of solid grade products versus the convenience of liquids. The ideal product would be a low cost solid grade flocculant which requires minimal handling and no sophisticated dissolving equipment. Recent polymer developments have lead to the commercialization of a limited range of dry polymers that can be screw fed at controlled rates directly to process streams without the need for predissolving. Other developments include dry polymers that can be directly added to mix tanks without the need for sophisticated wetting systems. The latter will make dry flocculants especially attractive for smaller users. Examples of these new products and their application in industrial and municipal waste treatment will be provided.

The Bureau of Mines improved removal of selenium from zinc smelter acidic gas scrubber effluent by using zinc dust to precipitate soluble selenium prior to lime neutralization. Lime neutralization alone decreased selenium in the waste water from, typically, 6 parts per million to 2 parts per million, whereas the use of zinc dust precipitant gave an effluent containing less than 0.1 part per million of selenium. The waste treatment operation first was developed on a laboratory scale and later was successfully tested at a smelter site on a 1-gallon-per-minute basis. During the research a simple and rapid means was developed for determining selenium in waste water; the technique enabled visual semiquantitative selenium determinations that later were confirmed quantitatively by X-ray fluorescence.

This paper describes the milling practice and operating results of the recently installed heavy-media separation plant of Barton Mines Corporation, the world's largest producer of garnet. This pioneer application of heavy-media separation (sink-float) processes for the beneficiation of a nonmetallic ore is unique in many respects, the details of which will be apparent from the following presentation. Characteristics of the Ore The property is on Gore Mountain, 5 miles west of the village of North Creek, New York, and 11 miles by road. The altitude of the mine is approximately 2800 feet. The valuable mineral, garnet, occurs in a surface deposit, the ore body being about ¾, mile long and varying in width from 50 to 300 ft. The garnet, principally almandite, Fe3Al2 (SiO4)3, occurs in a metamorphic rock of uncertain origin. The gangue mineral is principally hornblende, which constitutes from 40 to 80 per cent of the rock. The remainder of the gangue is divided between plagioclase feldspars and hypersthene, with smaller amounts of biotite, apatite and pyrite. The garnet content of the ore body varies from 5 to 20 per cent of the mass and averages about 10 to I2 per cent. The garnet occurs as crystals, mostly imperfectly developed, known locally as "pockets." These crys- tals vary in size from a fraction of an inch to a foot or more in diameter. Occasionally crystals have been found up to 30 and 36 in. in diameter but they average 4 to 6 inches. Nearly every crystal of garnet is surrounded by a rim of coarsely crystalline hornblende. The quarry faces are striking in appearance, showing crimson-red garnet crystals with their coal black rims scattered over a grayish black background. The specific gravity of the garnet is 3.8 to 4.1 while that of the hornblende ordinarily is 3-07 to 3.24. Some specimens of very dense hornblende have been found with a specific gravity as high as 3.40. The garnet crystals are laminated in structure, and readily cleave into flat, tabular pieces with sharp, chisel-like edges. Even when crushed to a very fine size, the garnet retains this flat, sharp, slivery grain shape. This characteristic, together with its hardness and toughness, gives it its value as an abrasive- Former Operations Mining operations have been carried on for 60 years. Until 1923, only the oxidized (soft rock) section of the ore body was mined. The oxidation, which affected the garnet only slightly, made possible the removal of the garnet from the rock by hand after it was blasted down, using small hand picks. "Columnar jointed basalt (CJB), which typically originates from lava flows, is characterized by a special geological structure. The joint network inside the CJB is self-organized into a rough hexagonal arrangement. The field test and measurement during the unloading excavation showed that the columnar joint sets and other internal joint sets not only are important for determining the mechanical properties of the CJB, but also induced its asymmetric unloading deformation and failure. A constitutive model, which considered mechanical deterioration of both the joint sets and rock blocks, was also developed to simulate the unloading behaviour of the CJB. The crack-confinement supporting method for surrounding CJB was developed to overcome the failure of columnar jointed rock mass in the diversion tunnel. Application to the CJB segments of the diversion tunnels in the Baihetan project indicated that this supporting method was reasonable and efficient. INTRODUCTIONColumnar jointed basalt (CJB) rock mass, which typically originates from lava flow, is characterized by a special joint structure. The joint network of the CJB is self-organized into a roughly hexagonal arrangement and leaves behind an ordered colonnade. The widely accepted current view regarding the formation of columnar jointing involves a thermally induced contraction–cooling mechanism (Peck and Minakami, 1968; Degraff and Aydin, 1987; Budkewitsch and Robin, 1994; Lore et al., 2000; Goehring et al., 2006). Although the columnar basalt formation mechanism is fairly understood, the geotechnical characteristics of such rock mass are not well established. In practice, joint sets always induce the multi- failure modes of surrounding rock in the tunneling space (Ibarra et al., 1996; Waltham and Swift, 2004; Mahendra and Bhawani, 2008).According to conventional wisdom in rock mechanics, structural joints affect the mechanical response of rock mass by introducing strong anisotropic effects (Barton and Bandis, 1980; Hudson and Priest, 1983; Brady and Brown, 1985). The columnar jointed rock mass should be considered an anisotropic material given that the joint sets are distributed with some principal directions and characteristic spacing distributions (Cundall and Fairhurst, 1987; Hoek et al., 1998; Wu and Wang, 2001; Budetta and Nappi, 2011; Fortsakis et al.,2012). Columnar jointed rock mass would result in structurally controlled failure patterns, even serious disasters during underground excavation because of the low shear and tensile strengths of intensely joints (Gencer,1985 ;Ishida and Uchita, 2000; Jia and Tang, 2008). The CJB rock mass in the Baihetan hydropower station has exhibited serious stability issues, including sliding, fracturing and even collapse (Shi et al.,2008). Therefore, the geotechnical and geomechanical characteristics of such rock mass should be assessed through in situ investigation and numerical analysis to minimize future accidents during underground unloading excavation."

The mixed-valence iron silicate ISCORITE (Fe7Si010) was identified recently in a number of ironmakingmater1als, some of which were first produced more than a century ago. Although the existence of iscorite was not reported before 1967 and published phase diagrams do not make provision for it, the morphology of the phase in all the materials that were examined suggests that it is stable under a variety of conditions. It is shown that is-corite can accommodate various foreign cations in its lattice where they can replace Fe and/or Si. The morphology of is-corite in a number of materials of different origin is shown in relation to iron oxides and silicates in optical and SEM/BSE images.

The Cushion Blasting Technique applied to solve the high risk case history represented by a 10,704 TM rock locate at 120 M from the hydroelectrical plants of 350 KV each, is described, analyzed and discussed. The generation and distribution of 700 KV produced by two hydroelectrical plants must not be interrupted by any reason, because the 26 district of the province of cajatambo, of the Lima department; would not have electrical power. The search of the best alternative and methodology, the drilling and blasting pattern calculations, charge design and loading, connections and initiations of the 50 blasts are described, analyzed and discussed. Finally, the excellent results from a technical, economical, enviromental and safety point of view of the 50 primary blasts are discussed and emphasized.

The negative charges on diaphragms of quartz, tungstic oxides, stannic acid, acid dyestuffs, soaps, and glass have for a number of years been explained on the basis of chemical equilibria—a hydrogen ion or light metal ion passes into solution leaving the solid complex ion negatively charged. While there are a number of observations which indicate a proportionality between the ( potential and the streaming potential it should be recognized that all the experimental evidence thus far presented shows that if hydrogen ion concentration is kept at a constant value, electrokinetic phenomena are influenced by salts. The multivalent ions exert the greatest effect on the reduction of osmotic flow. In the interpretation of all electrokinetic data the assumption is made that the potential of the solid remains constant. That this is not true is evidenced by the values of [ potential for quartz in contact with conductivity water as reported by the several investigators and by the authors of this paper. It is apparent that the nonreproducibility of surfaces will always prevent the obtaining of exactly comparable data. At best the experimental technique described depends on a theory which is capable only of showing a trend—another quartz surface should exhibit similar but not identical potential curves. It seems entirely reasonable to assume that the negatively charged laurate ions should have little or no attraction for a negatively charged quartz surface. The weight of previous experience in selection of flotation activators points unerringly to the usefulness of the multivalent metallic ions. The primary reason why the divalent barium ion is not available to two negative charges on the quartz surface might easily be that of distance between such adjacent negative charges. Otherwise activation could not occur, and the quartz could not assume the remaining unit positive charge of the barium ion. For this case no electrical double layer theory seems necessary. Clearly this is, at the negatively charged quartz surface, a case of partial chemisorption of the cationically divalent barium ion followed by the anionic neutralization of the remaining cationic charge by the freely moving laurate ion. The low concentration of diamond in workable deposits requires very large samples for grade estimation, and results, even then, may be erratic and difficult to interpret. Although the Poisson probability distribution cannot accurately describe the occurrence of diamond, it is suggested that it gives a better estimate of grade than conventional methods, even from single samples. Examples illustrate the simple calculation required.

Conventional methods for selecting a production plan for an open pit mine is based on the assumption that ore grades throughout mine life as well as market variables are known with certainty. Another important issue that is also being ignored in the conventional procedure is the value of management flexibility to revise operating policy with time according to the arrival of new information. Based on this oversimplification of reality, an optimum mine plan that is thought to be maximizing net present value (NPV) of the project is selected. Given the multiple sources of risk affecting the estimated NPV, there is a high probability that the actual value will be different from that estimated. This could mislead decision making process regarding selecting an optimum mine plan. This paper proposes a multi-criteria ranking system for selection between alternative mine designs under both geological and market uncertainties. The system is based on integrating multiple market and geological uncertainties as well as the operating flexibility to revise the ultimate pit limits using a Monte Carlo-based real options valuation (ROV) model. To compare the methods, the article applies the proposed system, along with the conventional NPV-based method, to rank possible mine designs for a copper and a gold mine. It has been found that, considering multiple risk analysis measures while integrating uncertainty and operating flexibility results in selecting a mine design that is different from that selected by the conventional method.

Hercules? is a low nickel austenitic stainless steel developed at Mintek that has a typical composition of 9 wt% Mn, 0.05 wt% C, 2 wt% Ni, 0.25 wt% N and 16.5 wt% Cr. A more corrosion resistant version of Hercules? (Hercules? B) with 0.5 wt% Mo has also been developed. Potentiodynamic tests performed on Hercules? B in a 5 wt% sulphuric acid solution showed it to have improved corrosion resistance comparable to that of AISI 304. The effect of a varying Mn content on the corrosion resistance of Hercules? B has also been investigated and the results discussed in this paper. From the corrosion test results, it is clear that decreasing the Mn content of Hercules? B increased the corrosion rate while increasing it decreased the corrosion rate. China was the world’s leading producer of barite during 1995 with 35%. The United States followed with14%. India produced 9%. Other producers included Morocco, Turkey, Mexico and Germany. Domestic production of barite during 1995 was estimated to be 600 kt (660,000 st). Nevada produced 85% of the total. Georgia was the second leading barite-producing state. The United States is the world’s largest consumer of barite. During 1995, it used 1.6 Mt (1.8 million st). US reliance on imported barite during 1995 was about 63%of total consumption, according to the US Geological Survey.

ABRASIVES include the substances, natural or artificial, that are used to grind, polish, abrade, scour, clean or otherwise remove solid material, usually by rubbing action but also by impact (sandblasting, for example). They do not include abrasive tools-for instance, lathe tools and files-or polishing agents such as waxes, which act by filling pores. Detergents and cleaners whose action is chemical rather than physical are omitted although some chemical action polishes and cleaners may also contain solid abrasives; for example, many metal polishes. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS The most important physical properties of materials that qualify them for use as abrasives are hardness, toughness (or brittleness), grain shape and size, character of fracture or cleavage, purity or uniformity. For making bonded grain abrasives such as grinding wheels, additional important factors are stability under high heat and bonding characteristics of grain surfaces. The economic factors of cost and availability are always important. No one single property is paramount for any use. For some uses extreme hardness and toughness are needed, as in diamonds for drill bits; for others, the factors of greatest importance are hardness and ability to break down slowly under use, to develop fresh cutting edges when grains become worn-for example, in garnet for sandpaper, neither highly cleavable or friable grains nor extremely tough grains
