In-situ composites were produced in both Ti matrix (Ti-20Y) and Mg matrix (Mg-20Ti, Mg- 20Nb, Mg-20Fe, and Mg-8Li) alloys. In Ti-20Y, a < 1010 > fiber texture formed in both the Ti and Y phases, and UTS increased from 240 MPa, (as-cast) to 950 MPa after deformation processing to a true strain of 7.3. Deformation processing produced smaller UTS increases in the Mg-matrix composites, but they showed exceptional resistance to weakening from exposure to elevated temperatures. The Mg-20Fe, Mg-20Nb. and Mg-20Ti composites tolerated 6-hour exposure to 400°C with no reduction in their 250 to 300 MPa room temperature UTS. All composites studied had excellent ductility and machinability.

"Mining industry has been the building blocks for human development through millennia and will continue to play its role in sustainability and meeting society’s needs for raw material. In the way towards sustainability, the next generation of efficient and heavy duty of Sandvik’s crushers, CH860 and CH865, are introduced for efficient crushing. As the secondary, tertiary and/or pebble crusher, these new crushers are designed to over perform in tough mining environment. Featuring higher crushing forces relative to the mantel diameter and 500 kW motor, combined with advanced automation system, i.e., sophisticated HydrosetTM and Automated Setting Regulation (ASRTM), combined with overpressure system with dedicated air supply in dust collar, etc., the new crushers provide higher safety, productivity, and reliability with the same foot-print of conventional cone crushers.Since crushers are more energy efficient than mills it makes sense to effort in fine crushing to save energy and protect environment. That has been the logic behind development and introducing stronger and more efficient crushers by Sandvik. The results on crushing hard iron and gold ores by CH865 have proven its efficiency in fine crushing at a higher productivity, availability and reliability rates through increasing throughput for defined size fraction and extended crushing chamber liner life.Within this paper the performance of the CH865 to deal with two different ores are presented discussed with a glance at how the downstream milling process can be benefited by saving energy and reducing the operation cost. In plant practice, the implementation of the new CH865 provides between 25 and 30% of the crushed ore in the size range of first step milling, i.e., < 2 mm, that offers opportunity for reduction in energy consumption in milling and even changing the process plant configuration by directly forwarded that part to gravity separation. Furthermore, potential of converting the rod mill to ball mill to improve productivity has been considered by plant engineers. Furthermore, some potential applications for such efficient crushers are brought into considerations and discussed. The new developments provide about 30% higher crushing force to efficiently deal with competent ores and pebbles. The CH860 and CH865 crushers are well suited to replace conventional secondary and tertiary crushers respectively; nevertheless, CH865 is virtual option for pebble crushing in SAG and AG milling circuits."

The Outokumpu Skim-Air Flash Flotation machine was developed to separate valuable mineral from gangue as early as practical by floating it with specially designed flotation equipment installed in the grinding circuit. Machines already in service have shown the ability to produce final grade concentrate with an increase in overall recovery and flotation rate while decreasing filter cake moisture and reducing fluctuating feed grades to conventional flotation circuits. The first US production test was carried out in a southwestern copper concentrator with successful results. This report describes the results of the test along with an explanation of the process and the benefits obtainable.

The Biwabik Iron Formation is a ~1.9 billion year-old sequence of iron-rich sedimentary rocks that was metamorphosed at its eastern- most extent by ~1.1 billion year-old intrusions of the Duluth Complex. The metamorphic recrystallization of iron-formation locally produced iron-rich amphiboles and other fibrous iron-silicate minerals. The presence of these minerals in iron-formation along the eastern part of what is known as the Mesabi Iron Range, and their potential liberation by iron mining has raised environmental health concerns. We describe here the geologic setting and mineralogic composition of the Biwabik Iron Formation in and adjacent to the contact metamorphic aureole of the Duluth Complex. The effects of metamorphism are most pronounced within a few kilometers of the contact, and decrease progressively away from it. The contact aureole has been divided into four metamorphic zones?each characterized by the composition and crystal structure of the metamorphic minerals it contains. The recrystallization of iron-formation to iron-rich amphibole minerals (grunerite and cummingtonite) and iron-pyroxene minerals (hedenbergite and ferrohypersthene) is best developed in zones that are most proximal to the Duluth Complex contact. ©2007 Elsevier Inc. Waterjets and diamond wire saws have raised the productivity and lowered the cost in dimensional granite quarries. While the cost of diamond wire sawing is substantially lower than waterjet, the judicial use of the waterjet can simplify and improve the overall operating efficiency and predictability. Granite is the hardest commercial stone and only the gem-stones garnet and diamonds are harder. The introduction of industrial diamonds has made it possible to quarry and process granite at costs equal to or less than other natural stones – making granite, with its superior properties, the best value available.

NQ Minerals PLC, through Hellyer Gold Mines Pty Ltd, plans to reprocess the contents of the Hellyer tailings dam to produce lead/silver concentrate, zinc concentrate and pyrite concentrate (containing Au and Ag). This paper discusses the project development, mineralogy, metallurgy and chemistry of processing Hellyer tailings and the associated environmental benefits. The Hellyer and Fossey orebodies were volcanic hosted polymetallic massive sulphide deposits located within the Mount Read volcanic arc of western Tasmania. Mineralisation was hosted in massive sulphide (pyrite) and comprised predominantly of sphalerite, with lesser galena, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. The Hellyer orebody was mineralogically complex (fine grained) and was treated through differential flotation with initially modest recoveries. Fossey ore processing characteristics were similar to those of Que River ore and simpler than Hellyer but treatment still resulted in significant grades in flotation tailings. The Emerald Mine No. 1, located in southwestern Pennsylvania is presently owned and operated by Cyprus Minerals of Englewood, Colorado. High volatile bituminous coal is produced from the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam by both longwall and continuous mining methods. The coal is then mechanically cleaned on site utilizing a combination of heavy media separation and froth flotation methods prior to shipment to both the metallurgical and steam coal markets. The Emerald Mine is presently producing 2.8 million raw tons per year, while liberating approximately 6.5 million ft per day of methane. In light of the methane liberation rate, ventilation requirements have been significant and have always received utmost priority and consideration. Figure 1 shows the locations of the current and proposed shafts. Emerald utilizes two Joy (Model M120-58-880) axial vane fans on shafts No. 1, No. 2R, No. 3R. (one operational, one stand-by) The use of computer simulation of various ventilation networks was initially employed during the design stages (1975-1977) and has been utilized through the present. Obviously, the initial planning, under the ownership of Lykes Resources, was strictly theoretical. All the quantities were proposed and the resistances were based on prior simulations of other mines and mathematical formulas. However, once the mine was moderately developed, actual values were recorded and utilized. A study was conducted on the seismic activities and associated rockburst events that took place at an underground Canadian metal mine over a period of five years. In the first stage, a back analysis of the microseismic database led to the identification of clusters of major events. The locations of these clusters were identified with respect to the local geology and the planned mining sequence. In the second stage, a numerical model was constructed using the finite difference code FLAC3D to simulate the in-situ stress, mine geometry, local geology, and stope sequence. Mining-induced stress fields were compared against two rockburst events that took place during this period, as well as against the various geologic units present. It was shown that by combining microseismic analysis and numerical modeling, it was possible to provide a basis for evaluating the influence of the in-situ stress regimes and stope sequencing on mining-induced seismic response.

Different conventional and non-conventional flowsheet configurations were examined for the treatment of a number of refractory lead-zinc and copper-lead-zinc ores containing carbonaceous pyrite, flotable non sulphide gangue and pre-activated zinc. The flowsheet configuration for the processing of complex massive sulphide ores has a remarkable effect on the overall metallurgical results. Conventional sequential flowsheets, with circulation of intermediate products for both lead-zinc and copper-lead-zinc ores, gave poor metallurgical results and often saleable concentrates were difficult to produce. The concept of semi-bulk flotation and double bulk flotation with coarser grinding of the ore, followed by single or double-stage regrinding and sequential flotation was established to be most effective in achieving optimum metallurgical results. This flowsheet design gave superior results as compared to the conventional sequential flowsheet, and resulted in a lower reagent consumption, a significant reduction in the circulation load of intermediate products, and improvement in the rate of flotation of valuable minerals. Thus, optimum flotation conditions were provided for different products within the flowsheet.

Uniaxial compression tests were performed on cylindrical specimens, 10mm in diameter and 15mm in height, machined from an extruded AZ31B magnesium billet. The tests were conducted under isothermal conditions to a true strain of 0.5. The study compares macroscopic flow anisotropy between the extruded (ED) and transverse (TD) directions in the temperature range of 300°C to 500°C, and strain rate range of 0.001s-1 to 1s-1. Compression of ED specimens at low strain rate (0.001s-1) exhibited axisymmetric flow, and no significant differences were observed between geometries of specimens deformed above 350°C under the same strain rate. Deformation of TD specimens at low temperature and/or low strain rate resulted in elliptical cross-sections, with the anisotropy of flow being less significant at higher temperatures. Other studies performed using rolled plates have proposed that pyramidal slip and cross-slip at higher temperature eliminate the effects of initial texture, while the dominance of prismatic slip at lower temperatures will result in anisotropic flow. It is believed that the initial fiber texture common among extruded HCP-structured materials plays a role in the anisotropic deformation behaviour observed in the extruded specimens

The mining industry has had lengthy experience with risk management involving technological situations imposing risks to people and property. In such situations the relevant parameters can be fairly well defined, the outcomes can be broadly predicted and probabilities of these can be estimated. Accordingly quantitative risk assessment can be applied. In recent years there has been increased emphasis in risk management on a broader set of potential consequences. These include potential impacts on the flora and fauna of ecosystems. These are typically poorly understood and this is especially true in Australia where the vast size of the continent and sparse population make gathering a comprehensive data base on biological resources a difficult task. The resulting scientific uncertainty and ignorance regarding the potential for serious or irreversible harm to the environment mean not only that quantitative risk analysis techniques are not appropriate, but also that the precautionary principle (PP) needs to be applied as a complement to qualitative ecological risk analysis. The potential for significant impacts is particularly high in Australian ecosystems. These comprise one of the 12 æmegadiverseÆ regions of the world in terms of biodiversity and, hence, have global significance. Moving from risk management to application of the PP by the mining industry provides a significant challenge. Application of the PP has no clear guidelines to follow and, to-date, has been highly unpredictable. However, there is much to be gained for industry in embracing this challenge and taking a pro-active approach in exploring methods that will provide for clearer guidelines and hence more certainty in outcomes of environmental management decisions involving precaution. As well, there could be considerable other advantages for the mining industry in terms of reputation assurance, community acceptance and greater certainty in terms of access to resources.

Studena Quarry is one of the main suppliers of inert materials for concretes production in Sofia. It is characterized by massif heterogeneity in density and fissuration. Failure to take into consideration this fact during the planning of the blasting works recently had unsatisfying results in their carrying out – obtaining of materials with too small dimensions or high percentage of outsize material. Series of test blasting were carried out to find the relations for calculation of the main parameters of the drilling and blasting works. The blasting network was enlarged to 6 x 6 m, the diameter of the shot-boreholes was changed from 110 to 152 mm, the stem of the boreholes was significantly reduced and the relative consumption of blasting agents as a whole was reduced to 0,37 ?g/m3.

Segment and gasket lining in tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels; and sheet membrane lining systems in driven tunnels are robust waterproofing systems each with a proven history of performance in Australia and further afield. Where an interface between these two systems occurs, the potential for costly failures is vastly increased and additional attention to detail is required in design, planning and construction. TBM cross-passages represent the most common occurrence of this interface, with steel compression flanges and neoprene gaskets being the typical means of connecting the waterproofing systems. There is a large variance in both detailing these flanges and associated outcomes, which makes this an area where there is room for improvement within the industry.The paper will look to tease out the various issues associated with this interface and how they can be dealt with efficiently with appropriate design measures, robust planning and carefully controlled construction methods.The paper will also look to review the new technologies and systems currently being put forward as potential alternatives, including an epoxy tape system, which has recently been successfully trialled on a project in Europe under high-pressure head.CITATION:O’Dwyer, E P, 2014. Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine is an epithermal gold deposit located in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Surface operations are continuing along with an expansion for an onsite mill to take place in the next couple of years. The surface pit is currently progressing downward from an oxidized zone into a transitional, more sulfide/ telluride-rich zone. Gold mineralization includes native gold, electrum, and tellurides. Cyanide heap leaching is the recovery process for the oxidized ore with the sulfide/telluride-rich ore to be processed at the new onsite mill. Ore characterization prior to mining is vital when there are two possible recovery processes. This characterization is dependent on geometallurgy. To identify the causes of the variability, multiple parameters are analyzed and assayed. These parameters are measured by a variety of analytical testwork. The analytical testwork provides measurements for the desired parameters. Geometallurgical models are developed for the parameters per recovery process, so estimations can be inserted into the resource model to optimize operations and recoveries.

PART 1: DENSE MEDIUM SEPARATION by E. R. PALOWITCH and A. W. DEURBROUK INTRODUCTION During 1965, 64.9 percent of the 512 million tons of bituminous coal and lignite produced was cleaned mechanically, of which 95 million tons was cleaned by dense medium processes.l The percentage of bituminous coal and lignite cleaned mechanically by dense medium processes rose from 7.0 to 28.5 percent from 1938 to 1965. Dense medium separations include those coal preparation processes which clean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid having a density intermediate between clean coal and reject. As there is a general correlation between ash content and specific gravity, it is possible to achieve the required degree of removal of ash-forming impurities from a raw coal by regulating the specific gravity of the separating fluid. Dense medium processes offer the following advantages over other coal cleaning processes : 1. Ability to make sharp separations at any specific gravity within the range normally required even in the presence of high percentages of the feed in the range of e 0.1 specific gravity units. 2. Ability to maintain a separating gravity that can be controlled with ±0.005 specific gravity units. 3. Ability to handle a wide range of sizes (up to 14 inches). 4. Relatively low capital and operating costs when considered in terms of high capacity and small space requirements. 5. Ability to change specific gravity of separation to meet varying market requirements. 6. Ability to handle fluctuations in feed both in terms of quantity and quality. HISTORY Sir Henry Bessemer patented the first dense medium process in 1858. The Nichols series system of electrolytic copper refining has successfully maintained its strong competitive position in the copper-refining industry of today; therefore the improvements made in accomplishing this result are of interest. While additional interest would lie in specific comparisons of results obtained in series operation with those in multiple, we have refrained from such a comparison because it can be fair to both only when they are operating under similar conditions on the same grade of materials. Historical The Nichols Copper Co. started a small refinery at Laurel Hill, using its present system, about 1892. The details of the process in its early stage of development were kept strictly secret, so that no information was published or interchange of ideas permitted with the staffs of other copper refineries, where the multiple system was being developed at the same time. However, the fundamentals of the process and type of cell used today differ very little from their earliest form. All operations including loading and unloading of tanks, and all transportation as well, were carried on by hand. The plant remained in this condition with a gradual expansion taking place until the World War forced such a rapid development that little time or thought could be devoted to modernization or mechanical improvement requiring careful design or detailed planning. Considerable progress was made, however. (1) Large refining furnaces were developed. (2) The old expensive air-lift type of circulation was abandoned in favor of the present system. (3) Operating technique was gradually developed to a high point of efficiency. (4) Tank construction and lining were greatly improved, the first concrete tank being installed in 1915. (This tank is still in operating condition.) (5) A new power plant was constructed. (6) Fuel oil was substituted for lump coal on the refining furnaces. (7) Mechanical casting of the finished product was accomplished. During this entire period the plant was particularly fortunate in receiving only high-grade, clean copper bullion coming principally from the Phelps Dodge mines in Arizona. Pneumatic coal loading and conveying systems provide alternative methods for the safe and efficient mining of the thin high-grade coal seams found in the Southern Appalachians. Pneumatic systems eliminate most of the health and safety hazards associated with the operation of conventional mining and haulage equipment in small low-coal mines by removing powered mobile equipment from the mine. Ventilation is also improved by the coincidental removal of gas and respirable dust from the mine by the operation of the pneumatic loading and conveying system. Other significant advantages of pneumatic coal recovery systems are relative simplicity, operating flexibility, low capital cost, quiet operations, environmental benefits, and ease of automation. The design considerations and field evaluations of experimental prototype pneumatic coal loading and conveying systems, installed and operated in small thin-seam mines, are presented in this report. In addition, fundamental design criteria and recommendations for the installation and operation of a variety of pneumatic coal loading and conveying systems are proposed, which offer alternative coal recovery systems that alleviate the serious health and safety concerns of current small mine operations.
