The mine ventilation system of the Henderson Mine provides a case study of designing and maintaining high-quality respirable air in a large underground mine with over 200 units of diesel-powered equipment. This system was designed with concern for minimizing exposure to personnel of siliceous dust, diesel exhaust, smoke, and potential fire hazards while optimizing general environmental air quality throughout the multilevel/multiheading operation. As a relatively new operation, the Henderson Mine incorporates a modern ventilating plant and mine de- sign as well as state-of-the-art technology where appropriate. Two main ventilation shafts approximately 2,300 ft (701 m) in depth (one intake, one exhaust) will handle 1.8 million cfm (850 m3/s) of air circulated throughout 60 miles (97 km) of drifting, providing the ventilation requirements for more than 25,000 diesel horsepower (18,642 kw) underground.

A proposed technique for improving coal-mine roof stability by softening parts of coal pillars along the sides of entries developed from structural analysis is presented. This technique is based on the transference of the high stress concentration in the roof near the upper corners of a rectangular opening to the roof rock and coal over the solid away from the opening. This transferral is accomplished by softening parts of the coal pillars by drilling a series of parallel holes into the coal in the ribs and face of the entry prior to advance. The effectiveness of the pillar softening in terms of reducing the opening width (so that the stress in the roof near the corner is equivalent to that of a narrower opening) ranges from 3 to 5 ft for a 16-ft entry using a series of 4 to 5-ft-deep parallel drill holes of 3 to 6-in.-diam on a 1 to 2-ft spacing for a particular geology. Pillar softening should be highly effective in controlling roof where cutter-roof cave conditions exist, because this technique reduces the high stress concentration in the roof at the upper corners of the opening. It may also be effective for reducing tensile roof failure and coal rib sloughing for certain specific geological conditions. This technique appears to be a simple, effective, and practical method that can be used to supplement conventional roof support methods of roof bolting, timbering, roof truss, and other existing methods in underground coal mines. The authors consider the technique feasible and believe that it merits underground trials.

In a present process to treat the tungsten carbide tool waste, the wastes are roasted in air and then an alkali leaching is carried out in an autoclave. An environmentally friendly process is required to recover rare metals (Co and W) from the wastes. The effect of mechano-chemical (MC) treatment on leaching of rare metals was investigated in this study. The solvent extraction and crystallization-stripping methods were applied to separate and recover tungsten and cobalt in the leached solutions. The MC treatment for the rare metal leaching is effective to dissolve rare metals from the wastes due to the change in crystalline structure of WC and oxidation of WC with KMnO4. Cobalt ions are extracted with D2EHPA by a cation exchange reaction. Tungsten in the leachate can be extracted by TOA (tri-octyl amine) as an extractant, because tungsten species exist as a form of anionic species in acidic solution. The rare metals in organic phase are recovered as insoluble salts such as oxalates and ammonium salts in the crystallization-stripping process. Researchers at the University of Alabama are investigating artificial intelligence based computer models of mineral processing systems. Two approaches have been found to be particularly effective in developing data-driven computer models. The first approach employs neural networks which are computational paradigms based on the mechanics of the human brain. They are able to extract the basic relationships between input and output variables from large data sets. The second approach combines fuzzy mathematics with genetic algorithms to produce an adaptive modeling system. Fuzzy mathematics provide computers with the capability of manipulating abstract concepts like those which humans use so effectively in decision making. Genetic algorithms are search algorithms that mimic evolutionary processes apparent in nature. Together, these two techniques can be used to produce an effective modeling system. In this paper, the two approaches to modeling are compared and contrasted with respect to accuracy and computational time while used to model three mineral processing systems: (1) a grinding circuit, (2) a hydrocyclone separator, and (3) a flotation circuit.

Fault tree analysis is a systematic safety analysis tool that proceeds deductively from the occurrence of an undesired event (accident) to the identification of the root causes of that event. One recurring mine safety problem-a dozer falling into a void over a drawpoint on a coal surge pile-was analyzed using available, inexpensive fault tree programs on a personal computer. The analysis identified basic and intermediate events that led to the burial of the dozer and graphically depicted the interrelationship between these various subordinate events as well as the various chain of events leading up to the primary event. A sensitivity analysis on these probabilities showed which events had the greatest influence on dozer burial in a coal surge pile.

Laboratory tests on three commercial methane detectors, two combustion-type detectors and one interferometer-type detector, were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine their response to certain single and multiple flammable gases mixed with normal and abnormal air atmospheres. Although both types of detectors responded accurately to methane-normal air mixtures, they did not show correct concentrations for other single flammable gases in air. Uniquely, the response of the interferometer-type detector to hydrogen was in a negative direction. The effects of individual gases in multiple flammable gas mixtures were approximately additive. In oxygen-deficient atmospheres the methane response of the interferometer-type detector erred on the high side, but only in very low oxygen concentrations were the combustion-type detectors affected-showing low, erratic methane readings.

L.R. Bower In regard to the paper by J.B. Gwiazda, it makes a highly technical approach to show that the µ factor used by designers of lemniscate-guided roof supports has never really been confirmed as a maximum and assumes that convergence is vertical. Also, the paper does not appear to take into account deflection of structures, which occurs when the lemniscate and base members are fully loaded to their maximum stress level, nor the front to back line of the support in relation to differential roof to floor movements caused by strata movements under pressure. It is not unusual for differential movements to be slightly diagonal to the line of the support, particularly in faulted areas and on gradient faces. The paper also does not take into account consolidation of fines immediately above and below the support. Generally speaking, any differential movement is from face to waste and under these conditions the µ of 0.3, which appears to be an international standard, has worked in practice. However, if the face end of the support is lower than the waste end, then the µ of 0.3 can be considerably increased, giving rise to the damage mentioned in the paper. The ideal design should aim for a slightly forward bias in the lemniscate guide so that the last increment of setting is toward the face, tending to close any fissures that may have developed during the support advance cycle. The support should also be fitted with positive set valves to ensure that a high setting load density is attained to minimize bed separation. As far as powered supports are concerned, convergence is irresistible and all powered supports converge at their rated yield load. A similar principle can be applied to the differential roof to floor movements to drastically reduce the very high forces that would otherwise be applied to the lemniscate structures and pins and that, in turn, are transferred to the base arrangement and floor loading. Any differential movements are usually catered for by the 0.3 µ factor or deflection of structures in the lemniscate guide arrangement and consolidation of the floor. The floor loading, due to differential movement, is in addition to the support convergence load and requires additional bearing area to avoid possible floor penetration. Some seven years ago, Fletcher Sutcliffe Wild Ltd. (FSW) introduced a lemniscate-guided shield support where the lemniscate linkage is connected to the roof bar through two horizontally converging rams to allow differential movement to take place above a given rated figure. This is a known force and can be guarded against, whereas with rigid connections the forces, as yet, are unconfirmed. By careful design, a horizontal force in excess of 6 MN (60 tons) opposes differential movements for a total ram loading of only 2.5 MN (25 tons), or 1.25 MN (12% tons) each. This principle can considerably reduce the length and weight of the support in comparison with a rigid pin-type structure ; also, the yield load rating can be increased without affecting the lemniscate forces. The graph shows the tensile and compressive forces in a lemniscate linkage of a support with and without hydrostore. These forces react into both the roof beam and base members and, as can be seen from the support height to linkage load graph, a considerable reduction in these reactions is gained by the use of the FSW patented hydrostore system. Floor loading is considerably reduced under maximum µ conditions, and by allowing the roof bar to move with the strata, some degree of improvement to strata control is achieved in line with the assumptions in the paper. In practice, these movements have only been in the region of a few millimeters, which, in turn, reflects on the improvements to strata control by the addition of positive set valves. Supports to this design of both 450- and 280-t (496-and 309-st) rating have been successfully used in the United Kingdom for several years, negotiating many faulted areas without one single reported need for repair or maintenance. This includes supports left unattended during the year-long strike, proving the reliability of the system.

The removal of sulfur from steel has been studied by many investigators, but the quantitative relationships between the factors involved have not been determined. This is undoubtedly due to the number of variables encountered in practice, an attempt to study any one reaction or relation being affected by other reactions the relative importance of which cannot be estimated. The factors that affect the extent of removal of sulfur in the basic open-hearth process are generally considered to be: 1. Basicity of the slag: (a) Iron oxides in the slag; (b) carbon in the metal or carbide in the slag; (c) temperature. These factors affect the reactions: FeS + CaO = CaS + FeO FeS + CaO + C = CaS + CO + Fe. 2. Amount of sulfur in the gas. 3. Amount of manganese in the metal. The factors which affect the rate of removal of sulfur include, in addition to these: 4. Fluidity of the slag: (a) Normal changes in fluidity with temperature; (b) changes in fluidity because of the addition of special reagents such as fluorspar. 5. Agitation of the bath. Within the past two years, two papers have been presented dealing with the influence of sulfur in the gas on slag and metal. Introduction The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) is a roof classification system. It was first introduced to the mining community in 1994.The CMRR filled a longstanding need to quantify geologic description of coal measure rocks into an engineering value that could be used for mine design. It has now been written to a user-friendly visual basic code that can be run on any PC with a Windows operating system. Background Rocks that form the roof of coal mines can vary widely and quickly in composition, extent, and defects. This results in an equally broad range of rock properties that can substantially affect the ability of the rock mass to form a stable mine roof. The CMRR was designed to evaluate the properties of the coal mine roof rock mass that contribute to its weakness and convert them into a relative strength rating from 0 to 100. These properties include the cohesion and frequency of discontinuities like bedding, slips, shears, and joints; uniaxial compressive strength (UCS); and moisture sensitivity. With simple lab and field tests and observation, the CMRR can be calculated by technical and operating personnel with a minimum of training. The CMRR has been widely accepted in both U.S. and international coalfields. As a result, a number of roof control applications have been found for the CMRR. It is currently used as an input component in the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability(ALPS) program, which is used to design longwall chain pillars. Incan be used as a criterion for determining the appropriate width of mine entries. It has also been used to indicate the appropriate length of cut in weak ground. The CMRR can be used as a strength parameter to characterize inter burden between mined seams in the numerical modeling of subsidence effects. In any area where an estimation of coal measure rock mass strength is required, the CMRR can be adapted to fill this need. How It Works Originally designed to be used with underground exposures, the CMRR can also be calculated from core. The chisel test for bedding cohesion and the ballpeen hammer test for UCS are inappropriate for core. These tests have been replaced by point load testing both axially and diametrally. Two other measures that are common to standard core logging—Rock Quality Designation (RQD) and fracture spacing—are also used to estimate rock weakness. With these easily obtained parameters, the CMRR can be calculated from core and used in the mine planning and exploration phase. The input screens allow calculation of the CMRR for both underground exposure and core. The CMRR is reported both as a “dry" value and as a groundwater-adjusted value for moisture-sensitive rocks. There is a graphical output report featuring a lithologic column with annotated unit ratings and a roof bolt symbol representing the height of the bolted horizon. Another important feature is an AutoCAD interface. This feature allows the export of located CMRR data directly to an AutoCAD layer in XYZ form. In this way, drill hole data can be inserted directly to a base map.

Within this context limestone has truely become an "urban ore". Its uses extend from traditional aggregate markets to lawn and garden, archetectual, chemical, agricultural, industrial, and environmental applications. This paper looks at both the occurance and uses of limestone in the northeast, and briefly examines changing patterns in consumptive use.

Following a massive rib wall failure along the reclaim belt of the large underground surge bunker at CONSOL?s Bailey Mine, a multifaceted, cleanup and rehabilitation effort was initiated to rapidly stabilize the bunker rib walls and place the bunker back into production. Rehabilitation of the bunker included infilling and re-mining of the failed excavation area, installing a system of horizontal tie-back cable bolts, constructing a large knee wall at the base of the rib, reducing water inflow, and providing drainage for rib water. As a result of the coordinated effort, the bunker was safely placed back into production within 38 days. The 7500-ton surge bunker, an engineering feat in itself, was constructed in 2003 to accommodate production surges from two longwalls. In 2005, 14.8 million raw tons passed through the bunker. The 22-foot wide by 75-foot high surge bunker excavation extends as much a 52 feet below the base of the Pittsburgh seam. The bunker excavation measures 325 feet in length, with feeder and reclaim belt excavations extending the bunker excavation by approximately 500 feet. The massive rib roll, which occurred near the bottom of the reclaim belt slope, measured as much as 45 feet high by 60 feet long. Failure of the rib was attributed to progressive failure of a thick claystone unit present near the slope bottom area. Saturation of the claystone by water inflow, high insitu horizontal stress, and pre-existing rock joints were considered contributing factors. Immediately after rib failure, mine production was temporarily rerouted to a parallel belt. Two bulkheads were then constructed 175 feet apart along the reclaim belt slope, and a customized fly ash-cement mixture was pumped from the surface into the unstable reclaim slope area. A tunnel was then mined through the backfill along the original reclaim slope contour; the new excavation supported by a system of customized steel sets. To assure stability of the adjacent bunker rib wall, a pattern of 70-foot long cable bolts were installed downward from the adjacent entries to effectively tie back the rib. Drainage holes and a 12-foot high knee wall were installed. Adjacent gas wells were also plugged to help reduce inflow. Periodic inspections and continuous monitoring are being used to help assure bunker stability.

Numerical modeling was used to investigate the feasibility of using two geophysical imaging techniques, cross-borehole ground penetrating radar (XBGPR) tomography and electrical resistivity (ER) tomography, for detecting and characterizing defects in deep-mixed soil columns. XBGPR modeling was accomplished with a three-dimensional numerical forward modeling code and a two-dimensional inversion routine. Spatial variations in apparent dielectric constant (Ka) and attenuation (a) were mapped. Electrical resistivity modeling was accomplished with a three-dimensional numerical forward modeling code and a three-dimensional inversion routine. Spatial changes in electrical resistivity were then mapped. Three different types of defects were simulated, in addition to a defect-free column. The computer simulations suggest that XBGPR tomography and ER tomography might be useful, non-destructive methods for detecting and estimating the extent of defects in deep-mixed soil columns. The results show that small, isolated defects might be difficult to detect, but defects approximately equal to or larger than the sampling interval (for XBGPR) or vertical electrode spacing (for ERT) should be detectable.

In the submerged arc production of ferromanganese, sillicomanganese and ferrochromium, the coke bed characteristics play an important role. The basic mechanisms of electric current conduction in the coke be dare not yet fully understood, but important parameters are the material resistivity of coke and the contact resistance between the coke particles. Preliminary tests indicate that the contact resistance is of great importance to the bulk resistance of the coke bed. An apparatus measuring the material resistivity and contact resistance of carbon materials has been developed. Both graphite and industrial coke have been tested. The material resistivity tests were performed on single particles to ensure that the effects of pores and cracks were included and the contact resistances were excluded. Two geometries were tested to obtain the contribution of the contact resistance to the total resistance of two connecting particles. The tests were performed in an inert atmosphere at temperatures and current levels found in industrial submerged arc furnaces. The results show that the method has a satisfactory reproducibility. It was found that the contact resistance is about 10 times higher than the resistance of the material when two particles are in perfect contact and that the resistivity of SSAB coke is more than 10 times higher than that of the graphite at room temperature, but with increasing temperature the difference decreases. For SSAB coke the general trend is that both the resistivity and the contact resistance decrease with increasing temperature.

"We address dynamic interactions between high-energy, reactive surfaces of polymer-matrix composites and solid surfaces. A common characteristic of these interfaces is that bonding occurs readily upon contact. In many industrial and biomedical applications, it is desirable to suppress this bonding phenomenon. This interfacial effect is discussed in light of the development of our new method of handling polymer-matrix composites in dental applications. This method involves vibration of the solid-polymer interface at different frequencies. For each material, there is a critical frequency at which the sum of the viscoelastic and inertial energies of the fluid at the surface exceeds the energy available for bonding. When the polymer is vibrated at or beyond this frequency, it does not adhere to solid surfaces. An important aspect of the developed process is that it can be used to characterize surface and interfacial properties of polymers under dynamic conditions, whereas existing techniques are restricted to the study of bulk dynamic properties.IntroductionThe purpose of this paper is to report on the development of a new method for manipulating polymer-matrix composite materials used in dental applications, and the potential of this process for use in materials characterization. The materials under discussion have polymer matrices of a combination of bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate (BIS-GMA) and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), and contain filler particles of silica and/or zirconia glasses. These materials are called direct aesthetic restorative materials, and are used for filling of cavities, repairing chipped teeth, and for other restorations in which appearance is of importance. They have the appearance of natural tooth material, and are therefore in great demand for use in the anterior portion of the mouth(l,2)."

Ausmelt Technology has been developed to process copper concentrates containing significant levels of lead, arsenic and antimony. A process was developed aimed at smelting these concentrate materials to remove the contaminants to fume and produce a clean copper product. The production of clean copper and the potential economic benefits of this process step over the sale of impure concentrates is discussed.

"An Engineering Scale Technology Demonstration (ESTD) unit utilizing the THOR fluidized bed steam reforming technology was built and operated by Hazen Research, Inc. for the purpose of denitrating and solidifying various Department of Energy (DOE) radioactive tank waste surrogates into granular products. The ESTD offered the opportunity to investigate the operational characteristics of two fluidized beds in series to test process system designs such as those for fluidization, feeding, and product collection. Operational characteristics that were evaluated included bed attrition rate, particle growth, and elutriation; and the effects that variations in process parameters (e.g., fluidizing gas flow rate, feed composition, feed injection method, and gas distributor design) had upon these characteristics were observed. Testing of the process systems on this scale allowed for design changes to be made where the cost in time and money were significantly less by comparison to those same modifications being made on the commercial scale.IntroductionFluidized bed steam reforming (FBSR) offers a moderate temperature (620-750°C) continuous method by which various liquid wastes can be processed irrespective of whether they contain organics, nitrates, sulfates/sulfides, chlorides, fluorides, volatile radionuclides or other aqueous components. The FBSR technology has exhibited the potential to process these wastes into either a carbonate or crystalline ceramic (mineral) granular product.Pilot scale testing was performed using the THOR Treatment Technologies, LLC (ITT) FBSR process, as it offered the opportunity to evaluate multiple aspects in an environment more conducive to experimentation. Process changes and system modifications could be made faster and with less cost impact as compared with changes to an assembled commercial plant. These aspects include verification of process chemistry and kinetics, evaluation of materials of construction, equipment sizing and design, and the interactions of the systems. Evaluation of process chemistry allowed for the verification of thermodynamic and kinetic models, and was used in conjunction with these models to improve the database and modeling assumptions. It also allowed for the reevaluation of data from earlier bench scale testing with the opportunity for long-term operations. These long-term effects may include the buildup of one or more elements that results in the formation of eutectics leading to the destabilization of a fluidized bed, or the shift in particle size as a result of attrition or agglomeration. The pilot plant also provided an environment to evaluate materials of construction."
