We still need to innovate, but it is getting harder. The real price of metals is declining, return on shareholder value is lower than other industries, and there is a shorter-term focus on staying viable in a capital-intensive industry where timeframes for implementation of new technologies can be long (+I5 years). In this environment, the levels of R&D spent by major minerals companies are remaining steady at around 0.2%-0.5% of revenue. This is not large and to remain viable in the future, we need to be smarter about the way in which we do R&D. The mining industry is a knowledge-based industry. Driving down the cost curve demands innovation, which demands knowledge. To be smarter and more effective in our approach to innovation, a new paradigm is required Generating, capturing and using knowledge has evolved from Mode 1 (discipline based and clear distinction between basic and applied research) to Mode 2 (multidisciplinary, team-based approached with flow between basic and applied activities). Mode 2 is now seen to be much more efficient and to deliver better appropriability (Tegart 2003). To survive, we need to innovate, and the best way to do this is collaboratively. Some examples and pointers for the future will be given in this paper. THE CURRENT SITUATION The Rand report and other recent studies have painted a grim outlook for the mining industry. The real price of metals continues to decline (Figure 1) and profit margins remain thin. This is reflected in shareholder returnwhich are well below other industries (Figure 2)-and current management strategies-which reflect something of a "survival mode." This paper is primarily a report on the process of using oolitic aragonite, as received from Marconi& Ocean Industries, Ltd. without further processing, for a major portion of the raw feed to a rotary kiln producing cement clinker. Oolitic aragonite is a high purity calcium carbonate material, dust free, with the appearance of a course, white sand. It is farmed when under the right conditions of temperature ocean currents, and ocean floor topography. The calcium carbonate will precipitate into small spherical particles on the ocean floor. These oceanic conditions are correct to cause precipitation of the calcium carbonate near Ocean Cay in the Bahama Island chain. The present growing deposit near Ocean Cay is in the billions of tons and is mined by a relatively shallow-operation hydraulic dredge. The aragonite thus formed is en orthorhombic crystaline form of calcium carbonate with a specific gravity of approximately 2.9. At a temperature of 505°C. (940F), the aragonite converts to the hexagonal crystal of calcite with a specific gravity of 2.6 to 2.7. This change in specific gravity weakens the structure of the particles but the individual pieces are still fairly hard. When the material is then calcined at 900°C (1650°F), the particles retain their shape but become soft and will break up under finger pressure.

Background The mine is located in Ebensburg, Cambria County, PA. Cambria County is located within the Allegheny Mountain section of the Appalachian Plateau Province. The geologic structures in the mine area included folds, faults, joints and cleats in the coal. These geologic structures seem to have genetic relationships with the Allegheny Front (lannacchione and Puglio, 1979). The mine's geologic structures have been influenced mainly by Ebensburg Anticline and Wilmore Syncline (Watson, 1979). Current longwall panels lay along the western limb of the Wilmore Syncline oriented south 30° west. Surface topographic relief in the area is less than 152 m (500 ft) and overburden thickness varies from 183 to 244 m (600 ft to 800 ft). The coal seam in the mine is part of the Lower Kittanning Formation. The thickness of the B-seam is the subject of discussion. It varies from 1.2 to 1.5 m (48 to 60 in.) and consists of two parts. The lower part is 1.1 to 1.2 m (44 to 48 in.) of soft coal and the remainder is bony coal. The coal seam dips slightly from 0° to 6° to the east-south direction. Panel entries are driven 61 m (200 ft) wide, consisting of three 5.5 m (18 ft) wide entries and two pillars 24.4 x 30.5 m (80 x 100 ft) centers. The mine has a history of cutter roof problems in the entries (Fig. 1) that has delayed the advance rate of entry development considerably and the cost of maintaining those entries is very high due to the requirement of very heavy artificial supports (Fig. 2). Due to excessive convergence in the headgate, installation of additional support and often resetting of steel beam, to provide enough clearance, in these entries imposed additional delay during the retreat of the longwall face, as the shearer cuts coal adjacent to the headgate and shield support at the headgate needs to advance under the steel beams (Fig. 3). COM Energy, Inc., a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corporation, has constructed a 1.6 million hectoliter-per-year COM plant in Jacksonville, Florida. COM will be distributed to customers in the region as a substitute for fuel oil presently burned in boilers and kilns. As the market for COM grows, COM Energy, Inc. expects to build additional units both in this country and overseas. This paper addresses the overall status and technical aspects of the project, focusing on the facilities for COM production and utilization.

Carbonaceous gold ores are ubiquitous to virtually all of the Carlin-type gold deposits along the Carlin gold belt in north central Nevada, representing the unoxidized "zones" of presumably extinct thermal spring systems of mostly Tertiary age. A period of subtropical weathering resulted in deep sub-lateritic zones in most deposits to several hundred feet below surface. Carbonaceous ores below this supergene profile of weathering have been investigated by various methods, including petrographic study, standard geochemical and organic carbon analyses, carbon and hydrogen isotopic ratios, electron-spin resonance spectra, infrared spectra, and DTA techniques. Results have been integrated with recent findings by other investigators utilizing fluid inclusion and thermal brine data to indicate a first phase hydrothermal solution temperatures and pressures at a minimum depth of 6 km under normal geothermal gradient. This phase resulted in the quartz-barite-calcite vein filling of the host rocks. Gold mineralization took place later at shallower depths. Primary organic material in carbonaceous ores from the Carlin and other mines appears to be a pyrobitumen residue derived from an old oil pool that had been heated by the thermal solutions, and from which the light hydrocarbon fractions were removed. Some of the bitumen was remobilized along silicified veinlets in the ore, but its role in the emplacement of the gold, itself, is not clear. The gold was localized submicroscopically in fine pyrite, mostly in framboids, and as fine metallic particles, but does not appear to be concentrated within the carbonaceous matter per se. However, reducing conditions associated with bituminous residues are believed to have been favorable for gold deposition.

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining-maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may he what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will he saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining-reports, naps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

The future of human exploration in space is intimately bound to the future of mining and energy production on Earth. By 2025, one or more manned bases will probably exist on the Moon, exploring the lunar landscape and geology, and acting as a learning platform, and possibly a resource platform, for expeditions to Mars and beyond. Unless the mining and space industries take an active and cooperative interest in the technologies required to exploit minerals and fuels in and from hostile environments, the necessary advances to support permanent extraterrestrial exploration will not be ready in time. With the notable exception of using lunar Helium-3 as a fusion power fuel, no other reason has been identified for the mining industry to take any direct interest in the exploitation of extraterrestrial resources for the benefit of its customers on Earth. Ample reasons exist, however, for the industry to take a direct interest in supporting technological development of the extraterrestrial resources necessary to support the economical exploration of space. The mining industry has critical experience in the development and application of technologies for the discovery, extraction and processing of natural resources; experience that the space industry will need to create a viable permanent presence in space. The industry also understands the end to end process of resource development and utilisation. On the other hand, the space industry can directly benefit the mining sector by helping mature and advance the extractive and processing technologies needed to economically and sustainably develop resources in hostile terrestrial environments, such as those available in low concentrations, at extreme depth and/or inconvenient geographic locations. We propose that strategic partnerships be created between the mining, space and allied industries and research organisations. Such partnerships would develop a joint capability for mutual benefit, targeting the most significant advances in the least time. The space industry will learn how to exploit essential resources off-planet, and the mining industry will gain access to technologies to help extend their activities on earth.

Hydrocyclone is widely used in closed-circuit grinding process. However, in the first classification operation of coarse particles with high pulp density, the shortcomings of traditional cyclone are that the grinding cycle load is much high, the apex of cyclone is easily to be blocked and classification efficiency is less. Specifically, the problems of traditional cyclone used in grinding process are as follows: (1) Mill utilization factor is low and its handling capacity is small. (2) Coarse particles mixing in cyclone overflow affects the following separation process and fine particles mixing in underflow causes over-grinding, which affects the total recovery rate of valuable minerals. (3) High grinding cycle load leads to large amount of high-density slurry pumping, which causes high energy consumption and severe wear of cyclones, pipelines and pumps. The applications of new type pre-classification hydrocyclone with centrifugal volute in the first classification process of Iron Mine Mill are introduced in the paper. Pulp particles fed in the centrifugal volute were arranged in advance, so that coarse particles can be far away from the overflow pipe, which can reduce the short circuit current to avoid coarse particles entering overflow and improve classification efficiency and accuracy of cyclone. The strong points of the new cyclone in the coarse classification operation are as follows: (1) finer overflow and less fine particles mixing in underflow improves classification efficiency more than 10%; (2) lower ball mill load cycle improves ball capacity more than 10%;(3) grinding energy consumption reduces by more than 20% and cyclone feed pump reduces energy consumption by more than 12%. In short, new type pre-classification cyclone with centrifugal volute solves the problems of fine particles mixing in underflow, high grinding cycle load and less classification efficiency in the coarse classification operation. Therefore, it has broad application prospects in ferrous metal and non-ferrous metal ore dressing plant.

6784. Barnes, V. L., and Romberg, Frederick. Gravity and Magnetic Observations on Iron Mountain Magnetite Deposit, Llano County, Tex. Geophysics, Menasha, Wis., vol. 8, No. 1, 1943, pp. 32-45. An outcrop of magnetite in the Central Mineral region of Texas is explored experimentally with a dip needle and a gravity meter. Two anomalies are observed, one due to the outcropping body and one probably due to a previously unknown body close to the outcrop. The possible attitudes of the bodies are discussed, and their masses and probable dimensions are computed from the gravitational observations. - Author's abstract.

"HPGRs (high pressure grinding rollers) have demonstrated higher energy efficiency than conventional comminution equipment due to their application of particle-bed breakage mechanism. In the past decades, a large number of studies have been conducted to understand the characteristics of particle-bed breakage, however, few of them concerned the difference between single-particle and particle-bed breakage in compression comminution. This comparison is able to demonstrate possible advantages of particle-bed against single-particle in a breakage event due to the isolation of the effect of force loading mechanism. The present study investigated progeny fragment size and energy efficiency of these two breakage methods at variable energy inputs and particle sizes. The results show that at low energy inputs of around 0.25 kWh/t, the numbers of fines resulting from the two breakage methods are very similar. However, at higher energy inputs of around 1.0 or 2.0 kWh/t, particle-bed breakage generated significantly more fines. From the perspective of newly generated surface energy, particle-bed breakage is obviously more energy efficient than single-particle breakage at energy inputs between 1.0 and 2.0 kWh/t. It was also found that HPGRs demonstrate high energy utilization rate in generating new surface energy within their typical range of specific energy input. INTRODUCTION Rock comminution is an important and energy-intensive process in mining operations. Nowadays, decreasing head grade and mineral liberation size of ore deposits greatly increase the energy cost of comminution process. HPGRs have been successfully applied in the mining industry to improve the energy performance of comminution circuits. Typically, 10 to 30% of energy saving can be achieved due to the application of HPGR (Wang et al., 2013; Casteel, 2005; Günter et al., 1996)."

"The digestion of minerals in strong acids or at elevated temperatures can result in the release of large amounts of silicic acid which can polymerize in solution to form colloidal silica and gels. Colloidal silica can cause a number of problems including interfering with flocculation, initiating crud formation in solvent extraction (SX), decreasing SX extraction kinetics and increasing SX phase disengagement times. Huntsman’s POLYSIL® polyether coagulants have a “lock and key” relationship with the surface of colloidal silica to help lower the concentration of these particles in solution, improve process efficiency and reduce reagent losses by minimizing crud formation. This paper investigates some of the issues caused by colloidal silica in hydrometallurgy processes and illustrates how the use of POLYSIL® coagulants has helped to improve process outcomes. INTRODUCTION Coagulation differs from flocculation in a number of ways. Coagulants are relatively small molecules that modify the surfaces of fine particles, weakening repulsive forces between them and allowing particles to stick together, while flocculants are generally molecules that are large enough to bridge the boundary layers between the particles. With flocculation, addition rate and mixing all make a difference to the flocs formed. Coagulation, on the other hand, is an equilibrium process. With coagulation it is only necessary to achieve good mixing, and coagulates will form as Brownian motion pushes the particles into each other. In real systems, this process is complete within seconds. Huntsman’s POLYSIL® polyether based coagulants have a strong affinity with the surface of colloidal silica formed by the polymerization of silicic acid. While silica found in minerals has a low aqueous solubility, large amounts of silica as silicic acid can be released as these minerals are digested in strong acids at elevated temperatures. The solubility of free silicic acid is about 150 ppm under pH conditions typical in acid leach environments (1), so the bulk of the silica will polymerize in solution to form colloidal silica. Colloidal silica can pass through a hydrometallurgy process without affecting any of the operations. However, it can cause a number of problems. These include gelling in a leach, interfering with flocculation or crystallization, initiating crud formation (2,3,4), decreasing extraction kinetics and increasing phase disengagement times (5,6) in solvent extraction. In these cases, coagulating the silica with POLYSIL® coagulants can reduce or eliminate the problem by enabling these particles to be flocculated and removed from the solution."

A team of researchers at the University of Kentucky, working under a USBM contract, developed over 65 simulation exercises for teaching and testing problem-solving and decision-making skills to miners and mining engineers. These skills involve both improving judgment and decision making in mine emergencies and enhancing the learning of real-world engineering design principles. The exercises are ideally suited for either latent image format or for computer-aided instruction. Exercise features are summarized, the structure and field testing of typical exercises described, and sample frames of individual exercises presented. Empirical data are summarized that describe the effectiveness of using these short, time-efficient performance tasks that simulate real problems and that provide immediate corrective feedback for teaching and testing critical skills. Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) is one of the leading base metal producers in India. It operates a two-smelter Complex at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. At this zinc-lead smelter zinc is manufactured by the conventional hydrometallurgical route and lead is produced by Blast furnace technology generating residues or wastes which contain substantial quantities of metal values. Disposal of such wastes is a problem in any non-ferrous industry. Both the stringent environmental regulations and the changing industrial scenario emphasise the need for industrial research to find economically viable and environmentally friendly technologies to recover the metal values from these waste materials. The in-house R&D Centre at Vizag Zinc Smelter (VZS) thinking globally re-engineered its activities and major thrust was given for converting waste to valuable metals and metal compounds. Basic analytical chemistry with the hydrometallurgical concepts has been adopted in developing these innovative technologies. In this paper attempts are made to provide a clear history of the different waste raw material, the process developed for each raw material and their superiority of over other parallel work. Most of the processes described here are pilot plant tested and under patenting. The process flowsheet, results obtained and advantages of each process are presented. This paper provides a consolidated approach through which the varied smelter waste materials can be processed with cost effective and eco-friendly innovative technologies. In-house R&D efforts at VZS with its contribution and achievement in converting æwastes into wealthÆ technologies are presented in this paper on the following the major thrust areas:recovery of zinc from liquid effluent; recovery of zinc from effluent treatment plant (ETP) gypsum sludge; production of highly pure electrolytic zinc metal powder from zinc bearing gypsum residue/sludge generated at the effluent treatment plant; hydrometallurgical recovery of copper as copper sulphate solution which can be used for CuSO4.5H2O, copper cathode/copper metal powder from copper-cadmium cement; recovery of manganese, lead and silver from anode mud generated at Zinc Cell House and 4-metal extraction/recovery of manganese, cobalt, copper and nickel from Indian ocean bed manganese nodules; recovery of zinc, lead, silver and sulphur values from silver concentrate residue generated at the froth flotation process; recovery of silver and lead as lead-silver sponge/lead-silver sulphide concentrate from lead bearing residues; recovery of lead, silver and copper from copper matte; recovery of antimony as antimony metal or lead-antimony master alloy from antimony bearing dross; and recovery of nickel and dimethylglyoxime from Ni-DMG complex.

Ultrahigh-speedphotographic and electronic meth-ods were applied to an investigation of details of brittle-fracture propagation in steel. The brittle fractures studied were obtained in steel plate with the aid of a Robertson apparatus. It was found that a brittle fracture proceeds by discrete steps ranging from 30 mm near the stop temperature to less than 2 mm at lower temperatures. The halting FROM prior metallographic observations of brittle fracture in steel' it could be concluded that the distribution of mechanical twins along a brittle fracture was similar to the distribution of mechanical twins induced by explosive deformation. It was therefore assumed that a running brittle fracture created stress waves, cf. Refs. 2-7. An emission of stress waves by a brittle fracture, however, seems only conceivable if the fracture propagates by discrete steps. For this reason a study of the details of times between successive steps drop in this tem-perature region from 20 usec to about 1 psec. The stepwise propagation mechanism is accompanied by an intermittent emission of stress waves of the order of 100 to 200 kg per sq mm. These stress waves seen1 to play an important role in the mechanism of brittle fracture as will be discussed. brittle-fracture propagation was undertaken to investigate the possible determination of the fracture steps and the emitted stress waves associated with the assumed mechanism. The more practical object of this work is the development of a test method for the determination of the ductile-brittle transition in small specimens. This has special advantages for the study of irradiation damage in steel. In this test method, which will be published in a following paper, the stress waves emitted by an actual brittle fracture are reproduced with explosive or electrical means and are then transmitted through small specimens at various temperatures. In the present paper only the results of the brittle-fracture study will be reported.

"The use of conditional simulation to characterise mine plan uncertainty is increasing for the assessment of risk in mining projects. While the development of grade uncertainty profiles is relatively straightforward and can be validated using standard geostatistical techniques, the addition of geological uncertainty to evaluate total risk remains problematic. Some of the problems associated with geological uncertainty methods include the clustering of data in favourable geologic units, difficulty in training image definition and the inability to address change of support issues for categorical variables. Despite these obstacles, the importance of geological uncertainty as a contributor to total uncertainty has prompted Newmont to explore and evaluate the use of various techniques (and combinations of techniques) on different deposit types.Two orogenic deposits of different geological complexity were selected for the study: Subika, a shear zone-hosted deposit, and Merian, a deposit containing gold mineralisation associated with quartz vein zones and stockwork within which are found higher-grade quartz breccia zones. Newmont trialled various categorical simulation approaches to determine the applicability of these methods for each deposit type and the effect of parameter choice on the width of the uncertainty interval. Some of the techniques that were trialled include multiple point statistics methods, sequential indicator simulation using local probabilities as well as variations of these methodologies.The goals of this study included: gaining an understanding of which techniques may work best in which deposit types gaining an understanding of the intricacies of each method gaining an understanding of the effect that each method has on total uncertainty analysis.This paper presents a comparison of the various techniques and makes recommendations for their use in uncertainty analysis.CITATION:Jewbali, A, Perry, R, Allen, L and Inglis, R, 2014. Mining in the Book Cliffs Coal Field of Utah has historically been associated with seismicity because of high-stress environments and the presence of stiff, competent rocks. Recognizing the geotechnical risks in this coal field, mine engineers have dedicated considerable resources to the study of mine seismicity. In spite of these efforts, there are no engineering procedures for assessing mine seismicity for a new property and in developing mine designs. This paper presents the results of ongoing geotechnical monitoring and stress analyses at a western U.S. coal mine. The intent is to demonstrate the application of geotechnical methodologies in evaluating mine seismicity and stress-control technologies including evolutions in yield pillar designs for variable topographic conditions of the Book Cliffs Coal Field. We show that narrow yield pillars are quite effective in limiting strain energy accumulation along the gateroads and thus the potential for pillar seismicity. At the same time, the pillars provide sufficient resistance to control roof-floor convergence at the headgate, gradually unloading to residual strength inby the face position. Lagging, nonuniform caving of overburden rocks results in periodic stress concentrations at the tailgate comer. The sudden release of strain energy triggers sudden failure of critically loaded coal in this area of the high stress gradient. The three-entry gate pillar configuration promotes formation of long cantilevers and load transfer to the tailgate, contributing to formation of cutters and coal bumps. The source of seismicity is investigated while simulating slip along three sets of joints in two stiff stratigraphic units during multipanel extraction.

While mining silver at Butte in 1882, Marcus Daly is reputed to have told his partners in The Anaconda Silver Mining Co., "It looks rather gloomy. The vein is running into copper." Recently, The Anaconda Co. authorized an $11 million expenditure to be made over the next five years to ensure their "running into copper" at deep levels for many more years. The new development program is designed to permit both deeper and more widespread selective mining in "the richest hill on earth" by means of additional shaft-sinking, reactivating closed mines, and establishing new haulageways and centralized hoisting facilities. Historically a deep level selective mining camp, Butte will now continue its uncommon use of three main types of mining methods at one camp-selective mining, block caving, and open pit mining. It was thought by some people that the construction of the Kelley shaft and the subsequent beginning of block caving operations in 1952-outgrowth of the Greater Butte Project-signaled the end of stope mining of high-grade ores at depth. This feeling became more pronounced when, in 1957, the Berkeley open pit commenced operations. During recent years, the tonnage of ore mined selectively underground has decreased, but the new program will maintain the position of selective underground mining in the overall picture of the Butte operations for many years to come.

This Information Circular describes copper mining and concentrating methods, practices, and costs at the Silver Bell Unit of American Smelting and Refining Co., Pima County, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The Silver Bell mining district, one of the older districts in Arizona, is in the western part of the Silver Bell Mountains in Pima County, about 40 miles west of Tucson and about 20 miles southwest of Red Rock, a station on the main line railroad of the Southern Pacific Co. The Oxide and the El Tiro open-pit mines of the American Smelting and Refining Co. are in the district (fig. 1. The principal ore deposits are in T. 12S., R.8E., Gila and Salt River base line, at an altitude of about 3,000 feet. The present town of Silver Bell, established in 1952, is reached by a paved highway, the Avra Valley road, that turns west from Highway 84 at Plata siding near Rillito and extends westward 25 miles to the townsite (fig. 2). The present town is about 5 miles southeast of the old town of Silver Bell that flourished from 1900 to 1930.

For the third consecutive year, predicted increases in coal production and consumption failed to materialize. Production of bituminous, sub-bituminous and lignite coal for 1961 was estimated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at 400 million tons, a drop of 15,- 512,000 tons from the 1960 figure. Anthracite production for the year was 17.8 million tons compared to 18.8 million tons produced in 1960. Consumption figures are expected to show a proportionate decline. Of coal's major markets, only electric utilities showed an increase-and even here the increase of approximately 2% was smaller than had been expected. Major cause of relatively low consumption was a decrease of more than 20% in the use of metallurgical coal for making coke. This presentation provides comments on the increasing challenges associated with pit slope designs from the perspective of a design reviewer. Besides the technical issues related to the significant increase in current and proposed slope heights since the primary methodology in current use for pit slope designs was developed, other factors are coming into play. These include changes in mining equipment and associated operating practices, as well as a growing awareness on the part of mining executives and other stakeholders of the significance of stable, or at least well-managed, slopes. In the latter area, the associated clarification of responsibility has led to the increased use of either in-house or independent review consultants working on the behalf of management. From a technical perspective, since the mid-1970?s there have been significant improvements in the tools, particularly analytical methods, that are available to slope designers. There is also an increased understanding of the importance of a detailed geological model, with strong emphasis on alteration and/or structure to form the platform for the slope designs. However, the basic technology for determining the rock strength aspects has changed little, although an expanding body of experience is being accumulated in its use and there is a reasonable degree of comfort in its application for slope heights of up to at least 500 m. In addition, slope management is now viewed as a critical part of the implementation of slope designs and this has been supported by continuing improvements in slope monitoring systems. In recent years safety has become a primary concern, in part as a result of some major slope failures that have attracted the attention of regulators and the public, as well as mining executives, who are being held more responsible for unsafe conditions and associated events. There is therefore a growing demand for risk assessments to replace the deterministic design approaches upon which the current design technology is largely based. The focus of mine executives on safety has undoubtedly in part facilitated the recent long overdue revitalization of research into the design and stability of large pit slopes, the requirement for which has been recognized for many years by practitioners. This research, as well as the CSIRO Large Open Pit Study, will almost certainly provide advances beyond the empirical strength determination methods such as the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, which form the basis for current rockmass strength determination. At the same time, as mentioned above, there is a growing awareness of the requirement for a detailed structural model as a major component of every large slope design. In addition, other areas requiring further research include the impact of groundwater pressures on rock mass strength, particularly in rocks with low permeabilities, and the role of stress in high open pit slopes. From the perspective of design implementation, even with the recent significant advances in metal prices, mine operators remain under pressure to minimize mining costs. To address these constraints, mining equipment of ever increasing size is being introduced. There are, however, some disadvantages to this trend in the area of slope design. For example, the large electric shovels are not well designed for scaling bench faces, nor are they cost effective in this mode. As a result, specialized equipment may be needed in the mining cycle to perform the clean-up duties, which in turn increases operating costs. Further, where the large equipment is used in minimum width pushbacks to reduce the instantaneous stripping ratio, the advance rates can be high, but at the same time the associated changes in operating procedures are often not conducive to the concurrent use of such measures as controlled blasting, careful scaling and drain hole installation that generally improve stability. The resulting conflicts which may arise between the interests of production and those of slope stability are often exacerbated by the fact that these stabilization techniques actually increase the operating costs on which the operations manager is frequently judged, even though there is an overall increase in profit. Meeting the objective of developing slope designs which are practicable , i.e., achievable in terms of every aspect of the operating constraints in the specific pit, requires interaction and compromise between the geotechnical engineer, mine planners and operating staff during the formulation of the design criteria. In the current environment, it is often no longer sufficient to present slope designs in deterministic terms to a mine planner who accepts them almost without question. Increasingly, the requirement is that they be proposed within the framework of risk levels, related both to safety and to economic outcomes, to a decision maker who may not be a technical expert in the mining field. In this context, the mine executives must have sufficient information and understanding to be able to establish acceptable levels of risk for the company and other stakeholders; in this process the slope designers must play a major role. These changing requirements for presentation of slope designs necessitate clear communication of the basis for the design, which may be very complex, so that the implications of the designs may be thoroughly understood by all concerned. To ensure clarity at this stage, the slope designer must not only quantify the uncertainty in the input parameters, including the geological model, but must also be able to communicate and defend the resulting design recommendations. Where particular designs may have high associated risks, simply because of the degree of uncertainty in the data, this must also be recognized and proposed methods of reducing the uncertainty included in the presentation. In summary, from a reviewer?s perspective slope designs must not only be technically sound, but must also address the broader context of the mining operation as a whole, taking into account such factors as safety aspects, the available equipment to implement the designs, and the acceptable risk levels for the company. In addition, the designs must be presented in a way that will allow the mine executives, who are ultimately responsible, and the operators, who implement the designs, to fully understand the basis and short-comings of the designs and the risks associated with deviation from any constraints defined by the designer. It goes without saying that there must also be a well-defined monitoring system to confirm stability and detect and manage any variations in the design model or unexpected instability.
