"The development of lead-free solders is urgent in view of environmental standpoints. In this -work the wettability of tin-bismuth- silver solders on copper was studied. Three kinds of fluxes were used. The wettability of conventional eutectic tin-lead .solder exhibited an excellent level over the other solders of tin-bismuth systems. Poor wettability of the tin-bismuth solders may be caused by the growth or dendritic copper-tin compounds at copper/solder interface, in contrast to the case of tin-lead'· solder. The wettability was improved by the addition· of silver in the solder. In this tin bismuth- silver system, silver was abnormally concentrated at the copper I solder interface even in the initial stage of contact. The wettability of the solder and the thickness of compound formed on the copper have a good correlation; the solder containing 2% silver exhibited the best wettability and the formation rate of copper-tin· compound on the copper was slowest.IntroductionSocial demand to avoid lead use in the industrial fields has been recently promoted· (1) because of the environmental protection of water resources. Especially the lead-bearing solders have been widely used in electronics and automobile products, and it is urgent to replace them with nontoxic materials (2)-(4). Thus the development of lead-free solders becomes an indispensable subject to the new generations and many works (5)(6) have already been carried out on the research and development of new solders. New lead-free solders are expected to have some requirements, for example, moderate melting temperature, proper strength and integrity, and lower prices, as compared with conventional solders. There have been already several alloy systems developed. Among ·these alloy systems, tin-bismuth binary or tin-bismuth-silver ternary alloys have great advantages such as having a wide range of soldering .temperature by controlling con:ipositions, though they have such disadvantages as ""lift-off"" (7)-(9): It is said, on the other hand, that a frequently overlooked property of solders, or one that is typically ignored by the research scientist as an ""issue"" for the manufacturing or product engineer, is wettability (10), although a ·work on the wettability has recently been published (11). Q.E.D. (QED) is a blast design and evaluation model that allows full three-dimensional design specification including the development of unique “live” terrains and an unlimited variety of complex charge configurations. QED’s analysis package allows the examination of likely outcomes resulting from changing various design variables in terms of vibration, fragmentation, rock-mass damage and muck-pile profile. Especially applicable to use cautious blasting applications, QED’s damage model uses vibration to estimate rock damage beyond excavation boundaries. This relates directly to operations such as Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository in Nevada, where damage beyond the excavation perimeter must be tightly controlled. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) h as b een studying a site at Yucca Mountain, NV to determine its suitability for long term storage of nuclear waste. The main mechanism of waste isolation will be the natural barrier of the host rock Total Systems Performance Assessment (ISPA) is used to model the excavation design and its behavior over time. Of importance to TSPA is quantifying the condition of the rock-mass before and after excavation. Ideally, there should be no excavation-induced changes to the rock-mass’ structure (removing the requirement to model the effects). At the least it may be possible to keep excavation-induced damage far enough away from waste packages so that modeling of these effects will not be required. QED can calculate a prediction of the extents of blast induced damage to the rock-mass. By using this metric as a design parameter, it may be possible to complete excavation of the repository more rapidly and inexpensively than previously thought, without jeopardizing the structural integrity of the waste containment areas or requiring blast damage to be modeled by the TSPA. This paper will explain the structure of the QED blast modeling system and show the analysis of historical data from Yucca Mountain. Processing of the historical data and the subsequent results will demonstrate how blast modeling can be used on an ongoing basis to assist the excavation process at Yucca Mountain.

Curiously enough, considering the relative accessibility of the two places, coal was reported at an earlier date in Saskatchewan than in British Columbia. Henry and Thompson were on the Saskatchewan River in February 1811, and on the 4th of that month recorded, while on Jack's Branch of North Brook, "I observed in one of the bends on the north side a bank of yellow clay, on which there appeared several horizontal veins of pure coal, of the best quality I have seen along this river." Later at Rocky Mountain House it was said: "a quantity of coal is tumbling into the water, as the current washes away the earth underneath. This coal abounds along the Saskatchewan, in some places forming solid beds several feet thick for several acres, which are washed by the river. In its pure state our smiths use it for the forge with equal proportions of charcoal made of birch or aspen, which answers every purpose for making and repairing our axles and other tools."1 It is needless to say that it was many years before this coal was used for any commercial purposes. Coal was first found on the northern end of Vancouver Island in British Columbia in 1835 at Beaver Harbor, where later Fort Rupert was established, where Indians had advised some of the Hudson Bay Company officials it would be found.2 The coal was used by smiths, and later on by the steamer plying along the coast.3 A report to the government in 1845 called attention to the coal reported in the neighborhood of Puget Sound and on the Cowlitz River, and that probably the samples used by the Hudson's Bay Company were obtained from the surface and. were not good. On September 7, 1846 a report on the coal situation was submitted by Ogden and Douglas, and a naval vessel was sent to investigate the report and was loaded with 62 tons dug out by the Indians, the seam outcropping along the shore.2 In 1847 some samples were sent to England by a returning war vessel. Little did I know, in 1977, that when the A. P. Green Refractories Raw Material Manager showed me 5-6 burlap bags with samples of calcined high alumina bauxite in their testing lab that this was the start of China moving to be the number one user and producer of calcined refractory bauxite. According to Ted Dickson in his August 2008 Industrial Minerals article China produced about 4 million tons of calcined bauxite in 2007 using 2 million tons themselves. They imposed an export limitation of 970,000 tons in 2007 and 940,000 tons in 2008. A 10% growth will take up the difference between exports and production in 4 years. Two of these years are gone. It will take only 4 more years to eliminate the export quota in home use. Then they will be importing unless they increase production. Guyana was exporting over a half million tons in 1975 and sold less than 70,000 tons in 2002. Basai Metals Group bought Guyana?s deposits and is rose to 250,000 tons in 2007 and expects to produce 280,000 tons in 2008. PRICES According to the USGS Prices dropped from $172/per ton for Guyana calcines in 1980 just after the start of Chinese production to $122 in 1985. Guyana prices averaged around $120/ton from 1985 to 2005. China?s price dropped as low as $45/ton in 1995 undercutting Guyana and making it virtually impossible for anyone to get into the market. The price suddenly escalated to $550/ton FOB China in the summer of 2008 when China actually cut its exports in half. The price dropped in the fall as orders dropped. This is a four to five fold price increase. Is this a shortage of bauxite or a monopoly? Australia dropped out of the market in 2008 and Surinam, controlled by Alcoa, is not participating right now. Will these two come back in to make up the difference? Will the price hold up so they can make a profit? [ ] The low prices have undoubtedly affected the prices of the 60 and 79% alumina bauxite which can hold down the quantity of 80% plus calcined refractory needed in the world market. China is starting to upgrade lower quality bauxite up to 90% alumina. With high prices kaolin alteration to high alumina comes into play. The calcined bauxite is also used for proponents, Brown fused alumina, and abrasive grades which compete with Refractories. These and the tightness of supplies needed for metallurgical will hold prices up. TONNAGE China is the number one supplier and consumer of high alumina calcined bauxite in the world. Basai Metals Group Guyana (BMGG) is owned and controlled by Basai Minerals Group of China. This appears to be the second largest supplier. Australia has dropped production and Brazil is just starting to expand. It appears China is going to replace some of exports caused by the Export License 940,000 ton maximum in 2008 by raising Guyana?s (BMGG) production of calcined refractory grade bauxite. Companies exceeded restriction in 2007. Fines have been imposed for 2008. In August 2008 they appear on line to meet the 2008 quota. After August prices have dropped off as orders dropped due to the recession. Guyana was the largest producer in 1975 with 769,000 tons which decreased to less than 79,000 tons in 2002. The U. S. is a small part of the world production. I have used the United States charts to represent world imports because I have little data on what other countries import and pay FOB for their bauxite. China started exporting calcined 80% plus refractory bauxite to the United States in 1979 with 24,000 tons. By 1985 they were the number one importer with 169,000 tons. Guyana who had been number one in shipments to the United States gradually decreased to 36,000 tons in 2006. Guyana has been purchased by China BMGG and will increase there production to over 200,000 tons in 2009. Australia shut down production in 2008 and Surinam has elected to not send any Calcined bauxite to the United States. Observations of dislocation structure in niobium are presented using two techniques. Triangular pits developed by electroetching are confined to orientations in the stereographic triangle between the (111) pole and planes of the (1ll) zone and require the presence of carbon. Some unusual electroetching phenomena at other orientations are noted. A chemical etch of dislocations decorated by the addition of carbon to 50 ppm reveals the complete dislocation line structure in a surface layer up to 30 p deep, with a resolution of less than 1 p. This effect is independent of surface orientation. The structure of subboundary nets may be resolved for misorientations up to about 1'. Dislocation structures found in strain anneal grown crystals, such as helices, prismatic loops, and high-density areas, are observed. The measurement of dislocation density is discussed and values obtained in different ways are compared. IN the course of some work on the response of refractory metals to thermal-mechanical treatments, it was desired to examine the defect structure of relatively low dislocation density crystals of niobium in bulk form. Surface and bulk methods for the observation of dislocations have been reviewed by ~melinckx,' and include etch pitting, decoration, and various X-ray techniques. The dislocation line structure has been developed by decoration in a few metals, although observations were limited to certain orientations, or by the coarseness and nonselectivity of the precipitate. The most commonly used technique is etch pitting. In niobium, etch pits have been developed chemically'0," in material of high impurity content and electrolyti-cally'' in relatively pure material. In this paper, etch pits developed electrolytically, and the dislocation line structure of a surface layer developed by decoration and chemical etching, are examined, and observations are presented from both techniques. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Our starting material was electron-beam-melted niobium, swaged to 4 or -in.-diam rod. Chemical analysis is given in Table I. Single crystals were grown by a strain anneal technique using 1 to 2.5 pct of strain and growth temperatures of 1700" to 2300"~.'~ Some crystals grown by zone melting were also examined. The desired surface orientation was exposed either by spark machining or by sectioning with a cut-off wheel and prepared for etching by electro-polishing.

Sadiola Gold Mine is an open pit operation located in Mali and owned by Anglogold Ashanti Ltd, Iamgold Corporation and the State of Mali. A conventional cyanidation process (cyanidation/CIP) treats 15,000 tpd (of a mixture of oxide and sulphide ores) at an average grade of 3 g/t Au. In 2002, the increasing tonnage of sulphides caused an increase in production costs and a decrease in gold extraction (from 95% to 70-76%). Because of the short retention time of the leach circuit (18 hours) and the refractory nature of the sulphides, gold leaching kinetics are critical. A laboratory investigation was initiated to evaluate actual plant practice and identify a means of improving the gold leaching rate. The study was conducted on a "soft" sulphide gold sample containing 4.96 g/t Au, 0.4 g/t Ag, 2.5% pyrite, 1.2% arsenopyrite, and 0.2% pyrrhotite with a P80 of 74microns. Pre-leaching significantly influenced the gold leaching rate. A short pre-leach (2 hours) performed at pH 8, a DO of 8 ppm, and with 300 g/t lead nitrate added at the start or the end, produced the preferred conditions. Pre-leaching for more than 2 hours was detrimental to gold extraction. The cyanide concentration had to be maintained at 450 ppm NaCN to reach a maximum gold extraction within the retention time of the circuit. A maximum extraction of 81.3% Au was obtained in 20 hours (leach residue at 0.97 g/t Au). A high level of dissolved oxygen in the pre-leach was not of any benefit. Extension of gold leaching beyond 20 hours indicated that all leachable gold had been extracted by that time. Plant modifications were made to allow leaching of oxides and sulphides in separate circuits. Treatment of oxide ores is now performed at a higher rate. Sulphides are processed at a lower throughput, with 300 g/t lead nitrate, to allow a retention time of 22 hours. Combined throughput remains the same, and total gold recovery has increased from 76% to 80% for an additional gold production of 16,000 ounces per year.

PT Kaltim Prima Coal's 13.1 km overland conveyor was commissioned in 1991. It is of conventional 3 roller 350 troughed belt type. Cost and performance optimisation during initial design ended up with 5.4m/s belt speed, 1,000mm belt width to convey 1,350tph, and 7mtpa of coal. Despite high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 mps in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput increase. In 2002, new low loss ST2100 1,100mm wide belt replaced the old ST2250 due for change-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to 8.5 mps, hence to increase the OLC capacity to 30mtpa. Performance data, experience of site personnel, site observation and tests, benchmarking, and information from equipment manufacturers were major inputs to the design review. The project fast track was another challenge in addition to executing modifications on a production lifeline. The project was completed within fifteen months and the OLC was successfully commissioned at 8.5 mps belt speed in February 2005. The OLC has been to date conveying 4200tph satisfactorily.

Although wheelchair users are regularly subjected to whole-body vibrations little research has been conducted to assess these vibrations or attempt to reduce them [2,3,5]. Most of the wheelchair and whole-body vibration research done to this point has been conducted on manual wheelchairs. Van Sickle et al showed that manual wheelchair propulsion over a simulated road course produces vibration loads that exceed the ISO 2631-1 standards for the fatigue-decreased proficiency boundary at the seat of the wheelchair as well as the head of the user [6]. In a study by Boninger et al [1], 66% of wheelchair users reported neck pain since acquiring their wheelchair. One of the key reasons believed to be the cause of pain, was the exposure to whole-body vibration. Kwarciak et al [4] and Wolf et al [7] performed similar studies using two methods of analysis to evaluate vibrations on suspension and non-suspension wheelchairs while descending curbs of varying heights. Both studies revealed no significant difference in the abilities of the wheelchairs to reduce the amounts of vibrations transferred to the wheelchair user. Although the efforts of wheelchair companies to reduce the amounts of whole-body vibration transmitted to wheelchair users through the addition of suspension systems is encouraging, the technology is not yet ideal. Additionally, the research to date has focused on manual wheelchairs exclusively, while little attention has been shown to powered wheelchairs. Methods This study includes the use of two suspension electric powered wheelchairs: The Quickie S-626 and the Invacare 3G Torque SP Storm Series. Each subject tested all of the configurations of the suspension wheelchairs. These included the Invacare with suspension, the Quickie with suspension set to three settings (most stiff, least stiff, and 50% stiffness), and both wheelchairs with solid inserts to act as non-suspension wheelchairs. Sixteen able bodied subjects have been recruited for this study so far. In each of the configurations of the wheelchairs, the subjects traversed an Activities of Daily Living (ADL) course. Vibrations were collected from a tri-axial accelerometer attached to a seat plate beneath the cushion during driving over the activities course. A mixed model ANOVA was used to determine if there were differences between suspensions based on Vibration Dose Value (VDV). Results Statistical analyses of the VDV data revealed significant differences between the six different suspensions over each of the obstacles in the activities of daily living course. Post-hoc analyses revealed that for each of the obstacles, significant differences existed between the Invacare suspension and the Invacare solid insert. For the Quickie power wheelchair the solid insert setting was not significantly different from the most-stiff setting for each of the obstacles

The SO2-ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach liquor generated by leaching of manganese nodules, after removal of minor quantities of iron and manganese, contained copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc and (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper from the leach liquor with LIX 84I, stripping of ammonia from the Cu-barren raffinate was carried out followed by precipitation of metal ions from the ammonia-stripped solution as sulfides. Leaching of the sulfide precipitate was carried out with H2SO4 to obtain a leach liquor containing 0.58 kg/m3 Cu, 2.67 kg/m3 Zn, 2.00 kg/m3 Co, 24.68 kg/m3 Ni and 10.0 kg/m3 (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper and zinc from the sulfate leach liquor with LIX 84I and D2EHPA, respectively, the solution was left with Co and Ni. Extraction of cobalt from the Cu- and Zn-free solution was carried out with 0.1 M PC88A and stripping of the cobalt-loaded organic was carried out with the cobalt-spent electrolyte (pH 1.4). Extraction of nickel from the cobalt-free solution was carried out with 90% neutral 1M NaPC88A followed by stripping of the nickel-loaded organic with 120 kg/m3 H2SO4 solution. Extraction of metal ions increased with increasing equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The maximum separation factors, with respect to the pH and extractant concentration variation studies, were 3796.7 and 15350.0, respectively. The extracted species for the metal ions were CoA2?3HA and NiA2?5HA.

"Sand and gravel are the second and third largest minerals in production in Brazil, and this is increasing noticeably. The extraction of natural sand from river beds is increasingly restricted and most of the sand used in large cities comes in from more than 150 km away, resulting in high transportation costs. As a result, it has become more common to use crushed rock as artificial sand. The main difficulties in this process are controlling the shape of the particles and the content of deleterious materials, such as mica. Within this situation, this paper presents an alternative to using artificial sand for concrete use. Our procedure involves the following steps: a) sampling sand from different production days, b) characterizing the bulk sample by particle size and shape distribution, chemical composition by X ray fluorescence and mineralogical composition by X ray diffraction, c) removing fine grains by air classifier, d) performing intensive attrition with high pressure washing and e) characterizing products. The results demonstrated that this sample contains a huge proportion of fine grains and a notable content of mica, which is distributed along all sieve fractions. The presence of mica makes the use of sand in concrete unfeasible, moreover scanning electron microscopy analysis demonstrated that this phylossilicate is finely grained and associated with coarse fractions. Thus, the removal of fine fractions made possible a partial reduction in mica content. Furthermore, intensive attrition demonstrated that the procedure was efficient to remove most of the mica while also reducing sharp edges, which improved the shape of these particles."

Polysaccharides have been widely used as depressants in mineral processing for decades. They constituent one of the most abundant family of biopolymers. However, only a small number of them have been used by industry so far because of a general lack of understanding of interactions between these polymers and minerals. In this work, adsorption tests, electrophoretic mobility measurements, microflotation and fluorescence spectroscopic tests were performed along with computer simulation to explore the mechanistic aspects of guar gum adsorption and conformation on talc as a function of relevant variables such as ionic strength, pH, solvent composition and polymer molecular weight. From microflotation tests, it was found that talc hydrophobicity decreased markedly due to the adsorption of guar gum even at very low concentrations and reached a plateau below moximum adsorption. Guar gum adsorption on talc was found to be not affected significantly by changes in solution conditions such as pH and ionic strength, ruling out electrostatic force as controlling factor for adsorption. Fluorescence spectroscopic studies showed no evidence of the formation of hydrophobic domains at talc-aqueous interface. Also urea, a hydrogen bond breaker, reduced the adsorption of guar on talc. All of the above results suggest that one of the main driving forces for guar adsorption on talc is hydrogen bonding in preference to electrostatic or hydrophobic force. This information should help toward designing reagents of optimum molecular architecture for efficient depression, dispersion or other such surface modification of particles.

The discovery of Olympic Dam in 1975 and, more recently, Prominent Hill in 2001 and Carrapateena in 2005 demonstrates the potential for world-class IOCG deposits in South Australia. Potential for further discovery of large IOCG mineral deposits in the Gawler Craton and the Curnamona Province is high because of continental-scale pervasive iron-rich alteration, crustal-scale structural preparation and unique magmatic-hydrothermal conditions. Recent exploration successes point to the effectiveness of new exploration tools and technologies to locate this style of mineralisation under cover. The gold endowment of these orebodies located in South Australia exceeds 75 Moz, with further discoveries to come. The lead time between discovery and development of the multi-million ounce Prominent Hill copper-gold mine in less than seven years demonstrates how quickly this style of deposit can be brought into production in South Australia. Clearly these long-life, multi- commodity IOCG deposits mines are an immediate exploration and future growth opportunity for the gold mining industry to replace ever depleting gold inventories.

The knowledge of the existence of petroleum in Southern California dates back to the days of the missions. The presence of asphaltum and semisolid bitumen was reported at Santa Barbara in 1792, but no serious attempt was made to develop oil until Professor Silliman's optimistic report in 1865 started California's first oil boom. Wells were drilled in many counties of the State, but the equipment was unsuitable and the drilling difficult and no production was obtained except in Ventura County. Even there the production was of little importance commercially, and not until the early '80s did it become sufficient to again attract attention. In 1888 the production for the State had reached a total of about 700,000 bbl. per year, practically all light oil produced in Ventura County, Pico Canyon, Los Angeles County and in the Puente Hills. The production of petroleum attained the dignity of an industry in 1895 when the Los Angeles City and Coalinga fields were discovered. The subsequent development has been remarkable, and in 20 years the production has increased from 1,000,000 to 100,000,000 bb1. per year. The refining industry has kept pace with the production of oil. The Pacific Coast Oil Co., the predecessor of the Standard Oil Co. of California, was the virtual pioneer refining company of the State, having built a refinery at Alameda about 1880. When purchased by the Standard, about 1902, it was dismantled and the refinery at Point Richmond was built. The Richmond refinery is now one of the largest in the world, having a capacity in excess of 60,000 bbl. per day. A small refinery was built by the Union Oil Co. at Santa Paula in the early days of the industry and later many asphalt refineries were in operation in Southern California. The Pacific Coast Oil Co. was then, as has been its successor, the Standard Oil Co. of California, the principal refiner and marketer of light products, the most valuable of which was kerosene. Before the opening of the twentieth century, gasoline of excellent quality was produced, though it was always a drug on the market and was produced for the simple reason that its presence rendered the flash and fire tests of the kerosene too low. All programs used to optimize main fan nowdays have to be run on the large and medium- sized computers. With a lot of array elements, complex processes, low convergence speed and large storage, these programs are both time consuming and difficult to be used in the micro computer. This program uses two languages (dBASEIII and BASICA) to calculate the network and to choose the fan respectively. It allows user to compare and choose the parameters of various kinds of fan and to transfer the selected fan parameters to the master program by a data communication system. Then the user can get the air quantity, the air pressure, the power and the efficiency of the main fan. The advantages of this program arc as follows: 1. It can be run on IBM-PC or compatible micro computer. 2. It can select a fan more quickly and less time consumingly. 3. It can choose desired one or a set of fans according to user's requirements. 4. It is suitable for the research institutions and coal mines.

THE Institute assembled on Tuesday evening, October 24th, in the hall of the Franklin Institute, Mr. Frank Firmstone, VicePresident, in the chair. Mr. J. Price Wetherill, of Tremont, Pa., read a paper on An Outline of Anthracite Coal Mining in Schuylkill County, Pa. The paper was discussed by Messrs. Coxe, Rothwell, Heinrich, Harden, and Symons. The second session was held on Thursday evening. Mr. A. L. Holley, Chairman of the International Committee, appointed by the Institute to consider the nomenclature of iron and steel, offered the following report of the committee, signed by all the members: WHEREAS, The recent production of soft, cast, malleable compounds of iron by the Bessemer, the Siemens-Martin, and the crucible steel processes appears to demand a new nomenclature of iron compounds, for the following reasons: 1st. The term "steel," by which these soft products are commercially and professionally designated in England and in the United States, does not completely distinguish them from previously existing "steel which would harden and temper. 2d. A nomenclature recognized in all languages seems desirable, as well for commercial as for scientific purposes, especially as lawsuits, already commenced, depend on the meaning of the term " steel." 3d. Although homogeneity, due to fusion, is usually recognized, and is by this committee recognized as the most definite characteristic of both hard and soft steel, this quality may be equally well expressed in other terms, thus leaving the old term, " steel," to define the malleable compounds of iron, which will harden and temper. Therefore, resolved, That this committee recommends the following nomenclature : 1. That all malleable compounds of iron with its ordinary ingredients, which are aggregated from pasty masses, or from piles, or from any forms of iron not in a fluid state, and which will not sensibly harden and temper, and which generally resemble what is called " wrought iron," shall be called Weld Iron (German, Schweisseisen; French, fer soudé). 2. That such compounds, when they will from any cause harden and temper, and which resemble what is now called puddled steel," shall be called Weld Steel (German, Schweiss stahl; French, acier soudé).

THE Bureau of Mines has received many requests for Information concerning the methods its laboratories use for analyzing coal and coke and determining their heating value. The fuel investigations now conducted by the Bureau of Mines are an outgrowth of the work undertaken at the Government coal-testing plant erected in 1904 at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, and the methods for proximate and ultimate analysis of coal used by the Bureau of Mines are based on those originally adopted by the chemists of the coal-testing plant and followed in the subsequent chemical work of the Government fuel-testing plants at St. Louis, Mo., Norfolk, Va., and Pittsburgh, Pa. The many valuable suggestions and criticisms received from N. W. Lord, director of the School of Mines, and from E. E. Somermeier, professor of metallurgy, of Ohio State University, at that time, are greatly appreciated; development of many of the methods for the proximate and ultimate analysis of coal now used by the Bureau of Mines is chiefly clue to these men.

The New London copper mine, about 8 1/2 miles east of Frederick, Md., was visited by the writers for a few hours in the spring of 1909 and the following brief notes on ore specimens collected are presented as a contribution to studies in chalcocite ores. For certain data on the structural and areal geology of this portion of Maryland the writers are under obligation to the unpublished notes and maps of Arthur Keith. The detailed study of the ores is the work of B. S. Butler. The deposit here discussed has many similarities to those of the Virginia district of Virginia and North Carolina, which have been described by Gratonl and Laney,2 except that in the deposits of the New London mine chalcocite is by far the most important ore mineral, while in the Virginia deposits bornite is commonly the most important sulphide. In the New London occurrence calcite is the most important gangue mineral. Field relations The -town of Frederick lies in the center of a narrow belt of limestone ranging in age from Ordovician on the east to Cambrian on the west. This belt is about + mile wide at Noland's Ferry, on the Potomac, and broadens to a width of 3 miles at Frederick. The general direction is east of north. The eastern boundary is, in places, a fault plane along which a series of metamorphic rocks of presumptive pre-Cambrian age have been thrust up. These ancient rocks, for several miles east and west of New London, are phyllites in the main, but closely inter-folded near the New London mine are long, narrow lenses of epidote

"A study is carried out to see the adequacy of using flying ashes coming out from a Power Station to eliminate the copper present in waste cyanide waters that are generated in gold mines.Tests were carried out to see how effective the use of ashes taken from two Power Stations could become. Later, the tests are made using ashes coming from Narcea Power Station as this station is near the mine under study.The work is centred on looking for an economically adequate solution to close the waste decanting ponds of the mine. After several tests, a solution is reached through filtration in static layers.IntroductionThe use of coal to adsorb some water-soluble substances has been widely studied [1,2,3,4,] both in the treatment of drinking waters and in determined stages of selective detachment of cyanide gold complexes in cyanide lixiviation processes [5]. Flying ashes sent to the atmosphere by Power Stations as a sub-product of the combustion of this combustible are generally made of more of a 70 % of a vitreous aluminosilicated material and of an active residual material which may be changeable making them potentially useable as adsorbents. Nevertheless, the properties of each kind of ashes depend on the characteristics of the Power Station, of the combustibles being used, of the combustion system, etc.The aim of this work is to demonstrate the adequacy of flying ashes to eliminate the copper present in cyanide waters coming from gold mines either by adsorption or precipitation of the metal. For this study, tests are carried out with Asturian ashes which have a low quantity of lime. The results obtained in the tests demonstrate the effectivity of the method used. To be absolutely concrete, the work is carried out to establish the use of these ashes in the closing of Asturian installations of cyanide lixiviation"
