There are about 1.341 trillion tons (t) of proven coal reserves in China, of which 279.58 billion t are available for mine well construction basis. Thick coal seams are 44% of the reserves. The production of thick coal seams exploitation is over 45% of the total coal production. Full-seam mining and fully-mechanized mining for large mining height is the technology development direction of thick and extra thick seam mining. It is also the important way to achieve efficient and intensive mining with the characteristics of high production, high mechanization, high efficiency and low energy consumption, etc. Complete set of technology and equipment of fully-mechanized top caving for large mining height of full-seam (7m) mining and extra thick seam ( 14-20m) has been gradually mature and for demonstration application by the joint research of government, enterprises, universities, scientific research organizations and users. It has solved some technical problems of coal face for large mining height (over 7m) such as the coal wall spalling control, stability of support, wall rock coupling, cooperation work of mining and caving, full roadway support for super large section, end support, equipment matching of coal shearers, hydraulic support and scraper conveyor. It has developed key equipments including powerful hydraulic support of fully-mechanized mining and fully-mechanized top caving for large mining height, electrically-driven coal shearer with high speed and reliability, scraper and belt conveyer with big capacity, soft-start and high reliability, automatic control system of coal face with the core of electric-hydraulic control, bolting drill boom large section coal roadway shearer, heavy auxiliary transport equipment. The operation rates of fully-mechanized top caving equipment for full-seam and large mining height are 94% and 92.1%, and recovery ratios are 93.6% and 88.9% respectively. The annual raw coal production of single work face is over 10 Mt. The automation and intelligentization level have been clearly improved. The exploitation of thick and extra thick coal seam that is safe and efficient has been achieved in China.

Chemical etching methods for the simultaneous revealing of the tellurium or selenium Phase and the chalcogenide grain boundaries of the alloy systems are given. A tellurium eutectic was found Present in zone-melted ingots. Similarly, a selenium monotectic was present in ingots. In general, the second phase (tellurium or seleniumn) occubies three different sites; viz., along the chalcogenide grain boundaries, as inclusions within the chalcogenide grain, and on the undersurface of the ingot. The detection limit for the tellurium phase is about 1 u in width. THERMOELECTRIC materials based on Group V (bismuth, antimony) and Group VI (selenium, tellurium) elements have aroused considerable interest in recent years in the practical application of thermoelectric cooling. In many cases, a small amount of excess tellurium (or selenium) was added to the material to optimize its thermoelectric properties. Then the question immediately arises as to the number of phases present in the resultant alloy. In the binary systems of Bi-Te, Sb-Te, and Bi-Se, the congruent melting compositions have been reported to be non-stoichiometric and are represented by Bi~Te respectively. It is to beexpected and known that Bi2Te3 and SbzTe3 crystallize from the melt with an excess of bismuth and antimony in the lattice and that tellurium forms a eutectic.~' The same could be assumed to take place in the pseudo binary systems of (Bi,Sb)zTe3 and Bi2(Se,Te)3 as well as in the system studiedby puotinen5 and other workers. Likewise, BiaSe3 crystallizes from the melt with an excess of bismuth in the lattice and selenium forms a monotectic.~ Therefore, in practice, alloys solidified from the melt often contain a second phase (tellurium or selenium) in one region or another of the solid mass even without the addition of excess tellurium (or selenium). ~u~~recht' studied the thermoelectric properties of (Bi,Sb)2Te3 alloys with excess tellurium and simultaneous additions of selenium. He mentioned that the materials show two phases because of the considerable excess of tellurium or selenium. However, he did not report as to how the tellurium or selenium phase was identified. It is generally believed that the presence of an excessive amount of tellurium or selenium phase in the alloy would adversely affect its thermoelectric properties and its uniformity. Consequently, there is a need for a simple method for the identification of the tellurium and selenium phase. The quantity of the second phase present is usually too small to be detected either by chemical analysis or by normal X-ray techniques. This investigation was therefore carried out, first, to devise a simple metallographic method for the identification of the tellurium or selenium phase coexisting with the chalcogenides and, second, to determine the distribution and specific location of the tellurium or selenium phase in the ingots. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting materials used for the alloy preparations were 99.999 pct pure bismuth, antimony, and tellurium and 99.997 pct pure selenium. The bismuth and antimony were obtained from Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada Ltd., while the selenium and tellurium were obtained from Canadian Copper Refiners Ltd. The tellurium was purified further in the laboratory by zone refining. The elements were pulverized in a stainless-steel pestle and mortar. The amounts for the desired composition were weighed out each time on an analytical balance to make up a 100-g sample. Then the sample was introduced into a Vycor ampule (19 by 150 mm), pumped down to a vacuum of 10"5 Torr for 15 min, and sealed off. The ampule was then heated in a horizontal resistance furnace at 800" to 900°C for about 20 hr. During this period the assembly was rocked back and forth several times to ensure good mixing. At the end of the heating period, the ampule was quenched in cold water and then transferred to the zone-melting apparatus described in a previous publications to grow large-size aligned polycrystals. The background and ring-heater temperatures were adjusted to make the freezing solid-liquid interface slightly convex to the liquid. The recorded temperature gradient in the vicinity of the freezing solid-liquid interface was around 15°C per cm. The ampule was moved horizontally at a speed varying from 0.4 to 2 cm per hr so that the ring heater would cover the whole ingot length from end to end. A single zone-melting pass was used for the Bi-Te, Sb-Te, and Bi-Sb-Te ingots. Two passes in the forward and reverse directions were carried out for the Bi-Se and Bi-Se-Te ingots. Six passes in the forward and reverse directions were performed for the Bi-Sb-Se-Te ingot. The zone-melted ingots were found to contain several large crystals, with their basal planes (0001) approximately parallel to the growth axis. Samples of bismuth and antimony tellurides coated with a layer of tellurium, and bismuth selenide coated with a layer of selenium, were prepared for comparison in phase identification. These coatings were made by dropping a piece of the zone-melted ingot into some molten tellurium or selenium under argon atmosphere and allowing them to cool slowly to room temperature. To drive and utilise gate roads economically requires accurate planning and risk assessment considering the variable geomechanical requirements. The geomechanical part of roadway planning is secured by geotechnical investigations of drill cores and geophysical borehole logging. The rock specific parameters determined in this way allow a statement about the quality (defomtation and strength characteristics) of the rock that has to be cut across. They set up the basis for a standardised rock assessment. Combined with the prevailing rock mechanical situation, technical boundary conditions for advance and support techniques can be identified already in the planning phase. Detailed geotechnical investigations prior to the planning and driving of roadways can lead to a technically and economically optimised roof support system. Geotechnical core logging and a standardised assessment scheme based on the data acquired will be introduced. Geophysical borehole logging methods provide additional physical data. Different methods and their validity, which may lead to a further improvement of the planning reliability, will also be presented. The concept of sustainable development is be-coming present in the policies of increasing number of industries and governments. The complexity affects not only production aspects, but has also special relevance for environmental decision making. Not only producers are re-evaluating the services they expect from the environment and concomitantly increasing their willingness to sacrifice other consumption in favour of enhanced environmental services, but the character of environmental issues is becoming more complex as well. Incomplete information, uncertainty, system wide change, trans-frontier impacts, current causes that have far reaching future effects, irreversibility, and possibilities of catastrophic change all complicate the environmental decision making process. Non-ferrous metals production, due to a relatively low level of metals content in ore, results in generating huge amounts of tailings, exceeding usually 90% of the mine output. They must be stored in special facilities, which have the significant impact on the environment both during tailing management facilities (TMF) operation and after their closure. One of the most essential impacts of operating and closed TMFs is their eolic activity, displaying in worsening air quality, aero-sanitary conditions in the neigh-boring villages and contamination of soils close to the facility by heavy metals.

Every few years we are treated to a battle over trade policy when the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act comes up for consideration. In 1962 it is especially appropriate to consider the problem of mineral import -policy and the closely related problem of general import policy, for this year's struggle is different from those of the past in two ways. First, proposals have been made which are a substantial departure from past trade agreements legislation, and second, the formation and growth of the Europe Economic is Community may have an important bearing on the kind of legislation that is adopted. But this anticipates what is to come later. My task is to examine the problem of mineral import policy, although we shall find soon enough that general trade policy must be considered in order to get an indication of what is in store for minerals.

Y.: If I may judge from the half-tone illustration engraved from a photograph of this medal and accompanying Dr. Prazer's paper, I do not think the cast ing is exceptionally fine. I have often made castings of simi lar character which I think were equally good. For instance, I have taken a coin, moulded it directly in fine sand, and cast from it in Scotch (or the equally good, if not better, Ameri can Scotch ") foundry-iron a copy quite as sharp and smooth as the original. The secret is in using very fine sifted sand. In fact, I have used for this purpose the dust which had accumulated on the beams overhead in my foundry, riddling it with a very fine sieve before using it. ['NOTE BY THE SECRETARY.—After the session at which these remarks were made by him, Mr. Garretson cast at his Buffalo foundry, in the presence of a number of members of the Institute, copies of the bronze pin furnished to visiting members by the Local Committee of the Buffalo meeting. The accom panying illustration, Fig. I, has been reproduced from a photograph of such a casting, made in green sand, under the conditions of ordinary foundry-practice, and not subsequently polished in any .way. I can also certify that the photo graphic negative was not touched, to improve its clearness of definition, before the production of the " half-tone" plate from which Fig. 1 has been printed. As, in the case of the Kytchtym medal, it was the thin, ribbon-like sprue, rather than the low-relief features of the medal itself, which indicated the fluidity of the metal and the sharpness of the casting, so in this work of Mr. Garretson it is the long and slender pin which offers the strongest evidence of these qualities. It is scarcely neccssary to point out that the filling in the mould of a long and nar row opening, such as this pin presents, is the severest test that could be imposed upon the casting, and that the sharpness of the point of the pin in the casting is striking evidence of the success with which this test has been met. The Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory .has made for the American Manufacturer measurements of this casting and an analysis of the sprue. The thickness of the main casting is from 0.049 to 0.068 inch. That of the tag bearing the stamped number is 0.024 inch. The analysis, which represents the iron ordinarily employed by Mr. Garretson for thin castings, is as follows :

Three piers of a new river bridge are supported on 1.067 m diameter open-end steel pipe piles. At time of drive, and after pile re-strikes, high-strain dynamic capacity values at plan tip elevations, were as low as 23% of design requirements. Pile lengths were extended 20% to 40% deeper than planned at two piers, driving to rock, impacting both the project cost and schedule. The significant discrepancy between predicted and observed capacity was investigated through a series of coordinated dynamic tests; a full-scale test pile was installed and monitored over 221 days by both dynamic and quasi-static methods. Unusually slow strength gains were observed by dynamic monitoring on all piles installed at the site. CPT soundings were advanced at the test pile and through the pile interior to investigate the soil plug. High-strain dynamic methods were found to have significant limitations in properly assessing the long-term capacity of large-diameter open-end pipe piles during driving and short-term pile re-strikes. As the benefits of large diameter high-capacity open-end pipe piles are numerous, the geotechnical community needs to address appropriate construction monitoring and control of these foundation types to take full advantage of these systems. An improved understanding of the physical effects of pile installation and the impact on soil strength assessment while driving and long term soil strength gain should be developed and incorporated into both design and monitoring procedures to avoid either unsafe or needlessly costly designs.

BHP New Zealand Steel produces iron from titaniferous ironsand by a direct reduction process comprising multihearth furnaces/rotary kilns/electric iron melters. The electric iron melter is a six-in-line rectangular submerged-arc furnace which takes the partially reduced ironsand (80 per cent metallisation) from the rotary kiln and completes the reduction process to produce iron of nominally three per cent carbon. As the melter operates at around 1500¦C and under very hostile conditions, it is near-impossible to obtain any basic operating parameters such as the velocity and temperature distribution in the slag and in the molten iron. As a first attempt to understand the operating conditions inside the melter, a scaled room-temperature model using wax and water to represent the slag and iron, was constructed. This paper will report on some of the preliminary model results on the temperature distribution.

Maintenance management improvement projects were undertaken at several BHP Collieries Division mines pursuing.the objective of achieving better structured maintenance procedures. Efficiently structured maintenance and optimum asset use are interdependent and productivity and computer models assist towards that objective. Definition of aspects of maintenance and analysis of the nature of equipment and materials, workloads and tasks, lead to more effective planning and scheduling of maintenance. The quality, standards and procedures of records must be suitable and adequate for storage and future retrieval. Total Quality Control initiatives and improvement projects even extend into spheres of customer/supplier relationships and problem solving teams as well as the more recognisable standards of management and performance factors in maintenance. All such factors contribute to a Maintenance Management Matrix to provide a better structured approach to economic maintenance management in the capital intensive coal mining industry.

OBSERVATIONS made in this paper were for the purpose of exploring the anomalous behavior of a particular heat of Type 310 stainless steel. The alloy, of nominal composition 25 pct Cr, 20 pct Ni, was observed to form a grain boundary precipitate at exceedingly high rates. A sheet of this metal, 0.060 in. thick, after cooling in air from 2000°F showed the presence of the grain boundary material, whereas none was found after water-quenching from the same temperature. IN connection with an investigation in this laboratory on the high-zinc side of the copper-zinc system, it was observed that well developed segre-gate structures of the Widmanstätten type were formed when a secondary phase precipitated from the solid solution of copper in zinc. This paper presents an analysis of the crystallographic relationship between the segregate and the solid solution matrix. The data to be presented are an interesting addition to the literature on segregate structures in that the plane of segregation is one of the less densely populated planes. In agreement with the generalization of C. H. Mathewson and D. W. Smith1 the plane of segregation in the matrix con-tains the direction of closest atomic packing of the lattice. Furthermore, the matrix and the segregate are both hexagonal close-packed, which has not been reported hitherto in the literature.2 The increasing com-mercial importance of zinc alloys containing copper makes this funda-mental study of value to the metallography of zinc alloys.

It has been discovered that gold can be extracted from alkaline cyanide solution with primary, secondary, and tertiary amines by adding certain Lewis base modifiers, such as organic phosphorus oxides. Under these circumstances, gold can be extracted at about pH 10, commensurate with the pH of cyanide leach liquors. The selectivity of the amines and amine/modifier combinations for Au(CN)[2] over other metal-cyanide complexes is discussed. Potential applications for the solvent extraction of gold from cyanide solutions are also discussed.

A data science based dilution study was conducted to identify the causes of dilution at South32’s Cannington Mine (Cannington), a large open stoping operation. In terms of industry benchmarks for unplanned dilution, Cannington is already performing very well, and so opportunities for improvement are more difficult to identify. The study is based upon back analysis of nearly 150 case studies from the mines reconciliation database, and has quantified the relative effect and significance levels for the following dilution parameters; time until paste filling, faulting and cable bolt reinforcement. Specifically, significant contributions were associated with faults and stope open duration. Quantifying the effect of faults on stability graph accuracy enabled a site specific adjustment to improve the predictive ability of the Cannington stability graph (unstable stope specificity improved from 63 per cent to 74 per cent). Despite Cannington’s already high levels of stope performance compared to industry benchmarks, data science methods have identified a complex interaction between identified dilution factors (ie stope open duration, presence of faults and cablebolting). Specifically, a third order Factorial ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) provided evidence that stope open duration reduces the effectiveness of cable bolts in faulted ground (average dilution = 2.1 m, p-value = 0.13). These results are consistent with site observations of a relationship between the stope open duration and the extent of failure when unravelling on a fault, even when cables are present.CITATION:Maher, K, Stewart, P C and Robotham, S, 2016. THE influence of environment on the mechanical properties of metals has been extensively studied and documented.' Most investigations have dealt with an interaction between a particular environment and a specific metal surface and the concomitant change in bulk mechanical behavior. Typical contributing media are oxide and metal film:;, electrolytes, and other surface-active agents. In the last category fall controlled gaseous environs (i.e., pressure or vacuum). Most vacuum exposure experiments prior to 1963 were conducted at pressures s>10-6 torr and elevated temperatures, or in such a manner as to prolong the exposure (e.g., by stress-rupture, creep, and fatigue). Little attention has been given to vacuum environment effects on the mechanical behavior of metals subjected to simple uniaxial deformation at room temperature. Test times and temperatures were assumed too ineffective as far as bulk changes were concerned. Further, the contribution of surface effects to the bulk mechanical behavior of metals was considered minimal. Under vacuums of the order of 1.0- 8torr and higher, molecular densities and, consequently, the rate of monolayer formation are such that exposures from seconds to days would be required for complete gas coverage. Thus, atomically clean surfaces created under ultra-high vacuum could conceivably maintain their cleanliness for time intervals orders of magnitude greater than at higher pressures. The influence of this unusual type of environmental surface phenomenon on the short-term bulk mechanical behavior of aluminum was first observed by Krame and Podlaseck in 1963.' kin equivalent effect was reported for magnesium by Williams and Nelson.3 It was concluded from these studies2,3 that vacuum and, consequently, the monolayer formation rate of the oxide, were responsible for the described changes in flow behavior. The presence of an oxide layer impedes dis- I) EXPERIMENTAL DATA: MOLYBDENUM The tensile behavior of molybdenum was investigated by the author4-6 at ambient temperature over a range of pressures from 760 to 10-10 torr. These studies revealed that the flow behavior of the bulk specimens (0.200 in. diam by 2 in. gage length) was independent of pressure on sintered (0.062 mm grain size) and arc-cast polycrystals (0.012 to 0.149 mm grain sizes) and single crystals. Since the specimens were relatively large in size, it was assumed that any flow behavior effect would be surface-limited because of the short-term deformation procedure. Strain-rate-change experiments performed to determine the activation volumes for individual specimens at 760 to 10- 10 torr further indicated that the surface flow contribution was either minimal or zero, contrary to the findings of Shen el a1.7 on aluminum. Although the flow behaviors did not change, specimen ductility did change. For the sintered material at a strain rate of 4.2 x 10-4, specimen ductility was -9 pct higher at l0- 10 torr than at atmospheric pressure (dry nitrogen). A more comprehensive investigations on this same material revealed a distinct pressure dependence, Fig. 1. Intermediate and atmospheric pressure tests were obtained by backfilling the system from l0- 10 torr with extra dry, prepurified nitrogen. Other environments (air and purified argon) were also utilized for the 760 torr experiments; the results were essentially the same as those for dry nitrogen atmospheres. Departure from the fracture strain values obtained at 760 torr takes place in the vicinity of l0-6 torr, as indicated by the scatter band; a noticeable ductility increase is apparent at l0-8 and 10-10 torr.

IN submitting an additional contribution to the discussion on ore-deposits in the recent volumes of the Transactions, it is my desire to adhere closely to matters of material importance as affecting the actual processes. Judging from the discussion by Professor Van Hise, and from one or two reviews or other articles by associates of his in geological work, the impression seems to prevail that, in so far as my paper* referred to ,his masterly essay,†I was guilty of misconceptions regarding both the part attributed by him in it to the igneous rocks and the ubiquitous presence of the ground-water. I should regret extremely to be wanting in these particulars or to have misunderstood one for whose great services in this and other branches of geology no one has a higher esteem than myself. I have, however, in the most careful way, and with these points in mind, read his essay again, anti, taking it as a whole, I cannot gain any different impression of relative magnitudes than the one first received. The importance of the igneous phenomena and the restrictive influence of the processes described by " cementation " in their effect upon the ground-water, as set forth in Professor Van Hise's " Discussion " (Trans., xxxi., 292), impress me as being in very marked contrast with the same things in his first essay. If the point seems to anyone of sufficient importance, it can easily be decided by reading the originals. My paper was the result of some years of observation, reading and reflection, and was meant to be an independent contribution, controversial only in some subordinate particulars. In depicting the drama of the deposition of ores, I cannot but feel that Professor Van Rise assigned to the chorus and the scene-shifters some characters which, it seems to me, should
