The vertical distribution of platinum-group elements (PGE) in the Merensky and UG2 chromitite Reefs is highly variable, but does follow certain general patterns that allow the testing of geological models. In the Merensky reef, historically popular geological representations and interpretations have suggested that the mineralization occurs in a pegmatitic pyroxenite bounded by two chromitite layers. However, there are now enough published exceptions to this relationship to expose its fallacy. The vertical distribution of the PGE depends largely upon the separation between these two chromitite layers or the absence of one chromitite layer. Where separation is small or only one chromitite layer is present, there is considerable PGE mineralization in the footwall below the pyroxenite and lower chromitite layer. With increasing separation between the two chromitites, the mineral¬ization occurs progressively higher in the succession, and tends to track the upper chromitite layer. The view presented here is that the entire Merensky package is comprised of three events of magma emplacement, in which each has produced variable reaction with, and erosion of, the footwall, causing recrystallization of pyroxenite into pegmatitic pyroxenite. The magma then produced a chromitite layer followed by pyroxenite. Each chromitite layer is associated with some mineralization, which was extensively complemented by the subsequent formation of a sulphide liquid carrying PGE that trickled down through about 1 m of permeable crystal pile. The sulphide liquid formed after, not coincident with, the pyroxenite layers. The distribution of PGE in the UG2 chromitite shows up to three upward depletion sequences of PGE, also suggesting three events. The PGE are associated only with the chromite. The contribution from a sulphide liquid is considered to have been minimal for two reasons. Cu and Ni are extremely low in the UG2 which would not be expected if sulphides had been present. Also, by analogy with the Merensky, downward trickling of sulphides would have caused some PGE to be present in the footwall. There are some PGE in the footwall, but only where remnants of chromitite occur, and the hanging wall is lacking in PGE. In the northeastern Bushveld the UG2 chromitite is thinner than elsewhere, and there is a UG3 chromitite layer, not present elsewhere, that has a high Pt/Pd ratio. It is surmized that in the rest of the Bushveld the UG3 only appears to be absent because it has merged with the UG2 to produce the high Pt concentration at the top of the composite UG2. The non-accumulation of the package of pyroxenite-norite-anorthosite between the UG2 and UG3 in the northeastern Bushveld, which is not seen elsewhere, creates an interesting challenge to the formation of silicate layering in the complex. Abstract-To facilitate the efficient handling of large volumes of information generated by logging exploration drill cores, a computer data bank system (GEOBANK) has been developed to store and retrieve the normally difficult to handle geologic information as well as the physical testing data. The data bank systematized the logging of drill core by first developing a standard list of adjectives or descriptors (with the corresponding assigned numerical codes) for the various stratigraphic categories that are also assigned numerical codes. The system uses the "floating-slot" concept and handles the data bank with one single input form.

The erratic and localised occurrence of economic gold grades is a common feature of high-nugget effect gold veins. The nugget effect is a consequence of small-scale geologically controlled enrichment, and the inclusion or exclusion of sparse gold particles because of the sampling process. Such deposits do not always contain visible or coarse gold, and can be characterised by fine gold particles. Economic grade accumulations are generally contained within discrete oreshoots, which are surrounded by barren to low-grade material. Problems are often encountered where small sample types (eg drill core or channel samples) often vastly understate in situ grade, due to their general inability to intersect rare gold particles. As a result, the definition of grade and its distribution is often challenging, and leads to substantial resource uncertainty. Proxies, or indicators for grade, can help the geologist gain a better understanding of grade distribution and grade potential. These are based upon geological (eg mineralogical, textural, etc) and/or geochemical (eg specific elemental ratios, fluid inclusion compositions, elemental correlations, etc) criteria. The paper discusses the use and application of such proxies through three case studies.

ARSENIC and antimony are always grouped together by chemists, since they are both members of group V of the periodic table of elements and exhibit a general similarity in the formation of compounds. Metallurgists generally think of them as less closely related because they do not have similar uses. In metallurgical operations, especially lead and copper smelting, arsenic tends to go off as a vapor phase and collect as fume in the flues, while antimony tends to remain with the bullion. Broadly speaking, the frequency of occurrence, practical utility and the effects on associated metals of arsenic and antimony are such that the metallurgist is inclined to think of arsenic as a troublesome impurity in ores, but of antimony as a valuable constituent that is recovered either as a byproduct or through the metallurgical treatment of antimony ores. Estimating the world production of arsenic as about 40,000 tons annually, probably not more than about 200 tons yearly is produced and used in metallic form, whereas one half of the approximately 40,000 tons of antimony produced annually is metallic. Va., and the mine, which is in the Winding Gulf district, produces coal exclusively from Pocahontas No. 3 seam. The property, comprising 4900 acres, is leased from the Pocahontas Land Corp. Prior to 1930 four separate mines were operated in this tract, some having been started about 1916.

"In 1991, local prospector C. “Mickey” Clement recovered at least three alluvial diamonds from the Michipicoten River. Two of these stones were sent to the Department of Mineralogy, Royal Ontario Museum, where they were identified as industrial-grade diamonds with weights of 1.05 and 1.13 carats. Both stones were described as frosted and graphiteinclusion riddled.In 1995, prospector Sandor Surmacz and geologist Marcelle Hauseux discovered diamonds in bedrock approximately 20 km north of the Michipicoten River. An 18.1 kg bulk sample of a xenolith-rich lamprophyre, taken from an outcrop at the side of the Trans Canada Highway north of Wawa, yielded 1 macro diamond and 5 micro diamonds. All but one was gem quality (Sage, 2000).Since then, more than 36 occurrences of diamonds in bedrock have been reported in an area approximately 30 km2 in size, centred 20 km north of the town of Wawa. The occurrences are hosted within a sequence of unusual, Archean-aged, heterolithic breccias previously considered to have no economic significance. Ten kimberlite occurrences also have been confirmed in the Michipicoten greenstone belt in the last five years. Two of these kimberlites are diamondiferous.To date, expenditures on property acquisition and diamond exploration in the Wawa are estimated at CDN$120 M.This paper summarizes the geological observations made on these occurrences and describes the relationship between the occurrences and the regional geology."

The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines, is investigating the treatment of refractory gold ores. Chlorination in the treatment of refractory gold ores is applicable in many low-grade gold operations. When usable, this treatment provides an economic means of consuming sulfides and deactivating disseminated organic carbon. Chlorination, however, is a pretreatment technique that requires the neutralization of the chlorine prior to leaching the ore with cyanide. Research by the Bureau has extended the present chlorination technology to allow for the recovery of gold without the use of cyanide and allow treatment of some ores presently deemed untreatable by gold operators using cyanidation or chlorination/cyanidation techniques. Chlorination without carbon of two carbonaceous ores extracted between 1 and 20 pct of the gold; however, carbon-in-chlorine (CICL) treatments resulted in about 90-pct recovery with a reduction in carbon loading. A statistical design campaign for stripping metallic gold from the carbon loaded in a chlorine environment demonstrated elutions exceeding 90 pct.

Fluctuating SO2 gas streams represent a difficult task for designers of SO2 removal systems (with respect to designing the plant), but in spite of the designers great efforts to solve the problems, the operation of such plants requires much care and attention. A fluctuating gas flow usually results from metallurgical smelting processes. Both gas composition and gas flow rate may vary. The first part of this paper outlines some existing technical solutions and presents the Pros and Cons of the different solutions. These solutions outline are: - Sulphuric acid plants operated with a preheater permanent in operation - Sulphuric acid plants with concentration increase of SO2 gas either using regenerative SO2 removal or cryogenic partial condensation of the SO2 - Sulphuric acid plants with additional burning of sulfur to increase SO2 content - Single-stage sulphuric acid plants followed by a tail gas system (which is) designed for periods of low SO2 input In the second part, this paper describes some existing technical solutions for removal of SO2 at low concentrations (i. e. less than 0.1 - 2 %-by volume), which could be used as tail gas treatment system for acid plants. While selecting an appropriate solution, special attention should be given to operating costs, which usually to a large extend depends on the type of absorption agent and the costs for disposal of the sulfur compound produced.

Flue gas desulfurization when burning western U.S. coals can be expected to be easier to achieve and less costly than when burning higher sulfur eastern and central coals. However, western coals cannot generally be burned in compliance with federal and state new source emission standards without some degree of control. Western coals and lignite represent about 20% of total U.S. recoverable reserves with 90% of that strip minable, and their production is predicted to increase from the 60 million tons mined in 1973 to 300 million tons in 1985. Most will be used for electric power generation, where low sulfur content is a paramount concern. Western coals are predominantly below 1% sulfur; low compared with typical values of 2 and 3% for eastern and central coals. Coal cleaning for removal of sulfur is not commercially practiced on Western coals, which typically contain half organic and half pyritic sulfur. Recent regulatory changes in the United States make it mandatory to conduct structural analysis of coal mine seals used to isolate abandoned workings from active mining areas. Different loading criteria are available for seal design depending on whether gob composition is actively monitored and maintained or not and whether the gob conditions lead to deflagration or detonation type loading. Since the loads involved in seal designs are dynamic in nature, the structural analysis must be made using dynamic stress analysis techniques. However, because of the significant complexities involved in conducting dynamic analyses, some designers use approximate simplified techniques to address the design problem. In this paper two such simplified methods are critically evaluated for their suitability to design coal mine seals. The benefits and limitations of the simplified methods are also outlined. Some comparisons are made to show the differences between sophisticated three dimensional dynamic analyses and the simplified methods and to delineate the problems associated with the latter approaches.

This is a shortened version of the paper ?The Methane-Air Explosion Hazard Within Coal Mine Gobs published in the 2013 volume of SME Transactions (Brune, 2013, pp. 376-390). This paper analyzes the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of methane-air mixtures in the mined-out gobs of underground longwall coal mines. Evidence from numerous mine explosions suggests that explosive methane zones can form within longwall gobs. Explosions and fires resulting from these methane accumulations have led to severe and fatal injuries to the miners, including the explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia, where 29 miners lost their lives April 5, 2010.The paper also reviews current research on numerical modeling of gas flows in longwall gobs and outlines how targeted injection of nitrogen into gobs can effectively reduce the volume of such explosive methane zones. The paper concludes that comprehensive monitoring of gas compositions, along the accessible fringes of the gobs along with inertization, improved ventilation schemes and further research are necessary to control this explosion hazard and make mining operations safe. The operation of hot stoves used for preheating the blast in the ironmaking blast furnace has a strong effect on the consumption of reductants, economic performance of and CO2 emissions from the steelmaking site. Generally, it is recommended to maintain as high blast temperature as possible, because this minimizes the rate of reductants in the blast furnace. The blast temperature is affected in a complex way by the time periods of heating and cooling of the stoves, and by the amount of gas combusted in the stoves. Furthermore, as the hot stoves show degraded performance with age, it is a non-trivial task to select optimal operation parameters for the stoves. The paper addresses this computationally by applying a one-dimensional heat-transfer model of the hot stoves for optimization of the performance of the system. The complexity and strong coupling of the decision variables is demonstrated by numerical examples, where the blast temperature is maximized under different constraints.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of using ammonium carbamate (NH2CO2NH4) leaching to recover manganese from steel plant slag. This investigation showed that treatment of the slag in hydrogen prior to leaching enhanced manganese extraction. Up to 80 pct of the manganese and 50 pct of the iron could be extracted from a silicon steel slag that had been pretreated in hydrogen at 700° C. Two 4-h leaching stages conducted at ambient temperature with a solution containing ammonia and carbon dioxide dissolved manganese and iron as their carbamate complexes. Heating the pregnant solution to 65° to 85° C decomposed the complexes and precipitated the metals as insoluble carbonate salts. Ammonium carbamate leaching of other slags from several steelmaking plants produced lower manganese extractions, which suggests that the method cannot be applied satisfactorily to all steelmaking slags

"Several years ago computer control of the flotation process was successfully implemented at the Matagami concentrator of Noranda Mines Inc. At that time this was the first computer application being installed at this operation. The last few years have seen an extensive use of programmable controllers in areas such as the copper and zinc dewatering circuits and the lime preparation system. With the aid of such instruments, these areas have attained a high level of automation and as a result, a high degree of efficiency. The controllers have proven to be very dependable and easy to use.IntroductionThe Matagarni Division of Noranda Mines Inc. operates two mines in the Matagami District of northwestern Quebec which is located about 650 km northwest of Montreal. The mines ship ores to a central concentrator whose throughput averages 95,000 tonnes of ore per month. Metal contents of the mill feed average 0.9 per cent copper and 5.0 per cent zinc. Concentrate outputs are approximately 3,200 tonnes of copper and 8,200 tonnes of zinc per month.The concentrator commenced operation in 1963. An on-stream X-ray analyzer was installed in 1968, providing analyses of several samples in the flotation circuit without the aid of a computer. In 1974, control of the circuit by computer was added to the system. As a result, zinc flotation efficiency improved considerably and reagent costs decreased through the reduction of copper sulphate consumption.In the past few years it was realized that significant improvements could also be made in other parts of the operation . Copper and zinc dewatering circuits and the lime preparation system were identified as major areas that could drastically benefit from automation. In 1982, programmable controllers were seriously considered as an attractive alternative for achieving the company 's goal. Because of their relative lowcost and their high degree of flexibility, they were selected for implementing automation and, for improving the efficiency in each of these areas."

"Recently4/ it was shown that the total energy method5/ of spectrochemical analysis is suitable for the quantitative estimation of many of the elements of which ores are composed. It was shown how this method can be applied to the determination of germanium, tin, and lead. Continuing this work, the present report deals with analyses for beryllium, zinc, cadmium, and indium.There are three basic problems in these investigations. The first is to study the influence of those elements that make up the greater part of an ore sample on the spectral-line intensities of the elements for which analyses are being made, the latter generally being the minor constituents. The second is to develop proper methods for the preparation of standard spectrographic curves. Finally, we are concerned with improvement in equipment and procedure, so that greater accuracy can be achieved.As discussed previously, it is better to study as groups those elements that belong to the same group in the periodic table because their spectra are similar. Beryllium, zinc, and cadmium are thus related. Lead has long been an USEPA priority pollutant and an important environmental and health concern because of its toxicity at ppb levels. In light of health and exposure data for lead, the EPA has set standards for Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) and a MCL Goal (MCLG) as 15 ppb and 0 ppb, respectively. An accurate and rapid measurement of lead in the field remains a technical challenge. In this work, a relatively new method of deploying a nanoband electrode system using anodic stripping voltammetry has been optimized by changing deposition potential, electrolyte, and plating time used for the measurement of Pb(II) in water samples. Green rust has been proven to be an efficient intermediate matrix for removal of lead contaminants. We also report here the removal efficiency of lead using green rust produced by electrocoagulation, both directly and indirectly. Lead containing floc was also characterized through XRD, SEM, and EDAX techniques.

The mechanism of crack formation in two target rocks (Kuru granite and Flamboro Limestone) is studied experimentally by simulating the impact action of a percussive drilling bit. Rock samples are dynamically loaded using a custom made impacting bit (8 mm, 12 mm and 15 mm diameter bits). The target rocks are impacted at velocities 8, 10, and 12 m/s. The resulting crack patterns are visualized by three techniques, Dye penetration, CAT scans and Optical scans. Mapping of the crack patterns is manually done with Photoshop. For 3D damage visualization, the crack patterns are mapped in two planes (impact surface and longitudinal sections). The three techniques are compared to determine an optimum technique for better damage visualization. The evolution of crack pattern with impact velocity and bit diameter is discussed.
