The purpose of this paper is to set the stage for (1) the determination of the specifications and actions required for a successful development of a system for the management of waste deposits and contaminants resulting from activities in the mineral industries and landfills and (2) the appropriate infrastructure to be developed at the industrial level. The design of this system would be such that its application could be extended to other industries as well. Waste deposits and contaminants from activities in the mineral industries and landfills commonly cause damage to the environment. In addition to precautionary measures aiming to protect against environmental impact, early warning and immediate response to mining hazards and contaminants is a requirement for sustainable development. Hazard detection and control requires continuous and real-time detection techniques, as well as methods for tracing and predicting the motion of contaminants and waste products. The efficient accomplishment of these goals in the minerals industry requires developing an integrated system for environmental monitoring using remote sensing technologies, in combination with advanced image analysis and geostatistical techniques.

The Brothers hydrothermal system is host to two very contrasting vent fields and to date, is the only known example of this kind for any submarine arc volcano in the world. Firstly, there is the NW caldera field. It is perched on the caldera walls and is up to 1,200 years old, and represents a more ?mature? system dominated by water/rock interactions, though there is also evidence for magmatic contributions to the hydrothermal fluids. It is host to relatively high temperature (~300°C), focused venting of metal-rich fluids. Large Cu- and Zn-rich sulfide chimneys occur at this site, with high concentrations (up to 90 ppm) Au apparent in some chimneys. Vent fluids of the NW caldera site show sub-seafloor phase separation is occurring at this site. Silica concentrations in these vent fluids are consistent with the vent fluid temperatures. Secondly, there is the cone vent field that is much younger, and which sits atop the summits of a main cone (the Upper cone) and an adjacent satellite cone (the Lower cone) that occur inside the caldera, near the southern caldera walls. This field is dominated by S-rich vents with vent fluids more diffuse, lower in temperature (<120°C), very gassy and acidic (to pH 1.9), and relatively metal-poor. Fluids of the cone site have Mg and SO4 concentrations higher than seawater values, indicating these ions have been added to the hydrothermal fluid and are not being depleted via normal water/rock interactions. Variability occurs between the two cone vent fields, with the diffuse discharge observed at the Upper cone volumetrically small and chemically different from the Lower cone. For example, from the vent fluid Mn, Li, Rb, and Cs concentrations, it is apparent that the Lower cone has experienced a lower degree of water/rock interaction (i.e., more reaction) than the Upper cone. Vent fluid pH is higher for Lower cone, consistent with more reaction and neutralization of acidic gases. Fe/Mn is lower at the Lower cone due to decreased Fe solubility at the higher pH. The lowest pH sample (1.9) is from the Upper cone that has 39.4 mmol/kg of SO4, consistent with input of magmatic SO2 and disproportionation to sulfuric acid and S or H2S. Thus, the Upper cone site could be interpreted to have a shorter reaction path and residence time between the point of magmatic degassing and the seafloor venting than the Lower cone site. Isotopic compositions of the NW caldera and cone vent fluids show evidence for magmatic water with negative dD and d180 values, while 3He/4He values show the Brothers hydrothermal system has shifted towards more magmatic conditions over the past several years with both sites affected by magmatic events. Similarly, vent fluid sulfide d34S values and those for sulfide minerals from NE caldera chimneys also indicate disproportionation reactions involving magmatic SO2. Minerals such as chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, covelllite and euhedral grains of hematite occurring in high temperature chimneys from the NW caldera site are consistent with a more oxidizing, magmatic fluid, while bulk sulfide geochemistry data show evidence for a higher temperature suite of elements (e,g., Mo, Co, Se) associated with Cu-rich chimneys. Gold mineralization occurs in these high temperature chimneys and is associated with the most recent deposition of high concentrations of Cu, where d34S values are most negative. Geophysical evidence suggests that the top of a magma chamber occurs ~2.5 km below the caldera floor, beneath the cone site in the SSE quadrant of the volcano. Very low velocities of <1 km-2 are seen in the seismic data between the magma and the seafloor, and are indicative of gas release. Harmonic tremor data provide evidence for a 500 m pipe-like ?conduit? located above the magma chamber (and below the cone), linking it with the overlying hydrothermal system, providing a mechanism for magma-derived metals to enter the hydrothermal system under the cone site. The NW caldera and cone sites are considered to represent stages along a continuum between magmatic-hydrothermal and water/rock-dominated end-members.

At the conclusion of my paper on the same subject read at the Boston meeting of the Institute, I offered to send some of sample No. 2 to any chemist who wished to analyze it. Eight chemists wrote to me for samples; so far I have received results from five. I give these results in a table (on the following page), together with the results previously obtained: As to the chemists and their methods : K is an iron-works chemist whom I only know by correspondence; lie writes: "No. 27(13.64) was obtained by the method I generally use, as follows : Dissolve 0.8 grams spiegel in hydrochloric acid and a little potassium chlorate, in a half-liter flask. Boil off most of the acid, add ammonia in slight excess, redissolve in acetic acid, using rather more than is really necessary, and then add 8 or 10 grams of sodium acetate and make up to the mark with warm water. Boil hard for fifteen minutes, then allow to settle (cool?), until the liquid reaches the mark, and withdraw 300 C.C. of the nearly clear liquid. Add to this an excess of hydrochloric acid, evaporate to dryness, take up with hydrochloric acid and water, and separate the iron by two precipitations with ammonia (I have often tested the ferric hydrate for manganese, but have never found any, if the separation by ammonia was properly made). Finally, precipitate the manganese as phosphate." Nos. 28, 29 (13.35, 13.07) were by Ford&apos;s method." No. 30 (13.50) was by Troilus&apos;s method He writes, " I may add the results are quite as good as I expected, although for any element except manganese, they are not close enough for anything like accurate work." Dust generation data have been obtained from 19 industrial Outokumpu flash furnaces. Statistical analyses of the data have been carried out and the most significant factors affecting dust generation evaluated. The results indicate that dust production may most effectively be minimized by: 1) Minimizing the distance between the molten slag and the furnace roof 2) Optimizing burner design and combustion parameters.

"The results of tests carried out on a 3-in. hydrocyclone have shown the linear relationships that exist between: (1) the flow-rate of water in the feed to and the overflow product from the cyclone; (2) the flow-rate of solids in the feed to and the underflow product from the cyclone. The underflow size distribution of an operation has been found to be linear and its usefulness in evaluating particle distribution in the cyclone has been discussed. Effects of design and operating variables on the above relationships have been discussed. The performance of this 3-in. hydrocyclone has been compared with that of a 20-in. cyclone, the results for which are available in the literature."

The use of medium-to-high sulfur coals has been negatively impacted by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment (CAAA). In this article, a method is demonstrated that can render these coals competitive and yet compliant with Phase II of CAAA. The method uses strategic mining and optimized preparation plant operation to minimize production costs, and it utilizes advanced coal-cleaning technology and an SO2 allowance to produce a compliant coal. The method is illustrated through an example from southern Illinois. For an annual production of 3.2 Mt (3.5 million st) and with a $150/st SO2 allowance cost, it was possible to produce a competitive coal for $0.84/million Btu. The production and allowance costs were $0.608/million Btu and $0.232/million Btu, respectively.

B EFORE discussing the equipment, it would be instructive to review the factors that influenced the management of Opemiska Cop-per Mines to purchase a friction hoist rather than a conventional double drum hoist. The mine required that 250 tons per hour be hoisted from a depth of 2,100 feet. They also specified that the top speed should not exceed 1800 feet per minute. Mining did not contribute significantly to the economy of Benin, a small country on the coast of West Africa, during 1978-79. During these years, Benin continued to be rated by the United Nations as one of the 25 least developed countries in the world; its gross domestic product was under $200 3 per person per year. Salt from seawater, sand and gravel, bricks, and imported clinker for cement were the only minerals which contributed to the economy. Minerals were not expected to play an important role in the commercial sector of Benin&apos;s economy during the next decade. Joint projects included infrastructure development to create a coordinated road and rail system between Niger and Benin that was begun in 1960 as ?Operation Hirondelle." In 1976, an agreement for the construction of a rail link from Niamey, Niger, to Parakou was signed. At Parakou, the rail line would join the existing line to the port at Cotonou. Construction of the rail line was expected to take 6 years, and the cost was estimated at $287 million in 1979. During late 1979, the Federal Republic of Germany granted Benin a loan of $12 million for reconstruction of the port at Porto Novo. Benin and Nigeria were discussing a joint adventure in crude salt exploitation.

One of the major problems in the exploitation of deep copper ore deposits in the Legnicko-Glogowski Copper Field is ground control and, in particular, roof control of the headings. The depth of copper deposits ranges from 600 to 1200 m. The parameters of ore-bearing rocks and the surrounding rocks show considerable variance of strength properties along the mining thickness (Fig. 1). The roof of the openings exploitation headings consists of dolomite-calciferous rocks. The roof strata consist of layers, the thickness of which vary from several centimeters to 0.6 m (sometimes to 1.0 m). These strata differ in strength and are characterized by igneous and sedimentary discontinuities. On the basis of studies in structure, properties and geological mining conditions of the roof strata in Polish copper mines, the method of roof classification has been developed. (1) This method uses the stability index "L" of the roof, calculated from [ ] The value of "t" ranges from 0, l to 0,8. Based on the value of "L", four classes of the roof (Table 1) corresponding to different degrees of fall hazard have been developed. The mining of copper ore deposit is carried out by a single lift room-and-pillar mining system or a two-stage room-and-pillar system with roof caving. (3, 4). The single lift room-and-pillar mining system is most often used. It consists in working of the deposit of 2.5 to 4.5 m mining thickness, 150-350 m long mining line, consisting of parallel room faces 6 m wide with pillars 5.7 or 16 m wide. As the mining line advances, cross-cuts joining individual rooms are made, thus forming support pillars 3x5, 7x7, 5x16, and 7x16 m (Fig. 2). The two-stage system (Fig. 3) mines the deposit with rooms 6 m wide into blocks 25 x 35 x 25 x 45 m. During the second step these pillars are worked with rooms and cross-cuts into pillars about 3 x 4 to 4 x 5 m (retreat mining). The pillars are crushed just before the fall of the roof. The maximum opening of workings in the two-step system is about 10 m, i.e. one belt entry and one row of bearing pillars. In single lift room-and-pillar systems it is about 35 m., i.e. three belt entries and three rows of bearing pillars. The support of the headings consists of expansion bolts 1.6-1.8 m installed in a bolting pattern 1.1 x 1.5 m. In both systems the fall step is about 10 m, i.e. the width of a belt and a bearing pillar. The Indications of Rock Mass Pressure Individual Dog Heading Individual dog headings are set wide apart from each other in the unmined ore deposit area where there is no interaction of headings. The indication of rock mass pressure are, in such cases, limited to the deformations and damage of side walls. Radiometric studies of rock mass loosening showed that the maximum range of lifts in side-walls immediately after web was 2 m (4,5). In the course of time the cracked side rocks fall off, thus widening the heading. The morphology of side-walls is influenced by the location of the heading in relation to clump layer/tarry. A new methodology of an experimental-analytical approach has been developed. It is used in building an information geomechanic monitoring system for the modeling of geomechanic processes during coal seam working. The approach synthesizes experimental (in-situ) measurements of rock pressure manifestation in separate points, methods of numerical modeling of processes on rock boundaries with coal, and a seam analytical calculation of rock mass in a spatial strained state. One of the realizations of this approach is the developed theory and calculation method of adjoining rock surface shift (overhang) formation during underground working of sheet deposits and of rock mass geomechanic state determination. There are description algorithms of cavity configurations with broken lengths of faces during underground working of useful mineral sheet deposits. These algorithms have been used in computer modeling of formations of adjoining rock surface overhangs and abutment pressure upon rock mass in the area of coal faces with irrectilinear longwalls. Peculiarities of surfaces shifts and stress allocation are established for different face schemes. The use of theory and methods alloww working out techniques of automatic control to receive processing algorithms of RPM measurement results and calculate geomechanic situations within panels in the process of planning and development as well as during mining, i.e., to carry out long-term prediction, in-line control, and short-term prediction of rock pressure manifestations.

Tungsten carbide scrap (WC–Co) is material generated from the tungsten carbide manufacturing process and worn out or used carbide parts from industry. Tungsten (W) ores contain about 3 wt% WO3 and their W concentrates about 10– 75 wt% WO3. Tungsten carbide scrap typically contains 40–95 wt% W. The high intrinsic value of W and the fact that the least valuable scrap contains more W than the average tungsten ore makes tungsten carbide scrap a worthy material for re-use. This study has investigated the selective dissolution of the cobalt (Co) binder phase, and recovery of tungsten monocarbide (WC) and Co using an acid leach process. The Co component was selectively leached leaving the WC solid particles intact. Further investigation using a complexing agent-aided acid leach process that takes advantage of organic chelating agents that form a soluble tungsten complex in place of the passive insoluble tungsten oxide is envisaged. The optimal dissolution of the Co binder phase using an inorganic acid in conjunction with an organic complexing agent is a novel approach with the potential of reduced leaching times and possibility of regenerating the unreacted organic acid.

O compósito metal-cerâmico Al2O3 – Cu alia as propriedades de baixa densidade, alta resistência ao desgaste, dureza e biocompatibilidade da fase cerâmica alumina a excelente condutividade elétrica, e alta tenacidade do cobre metálico. Tal compósito pode ser aplicado como ferramenta de corte, entre outras. Este trabalho discute a influência da moagem de alta energia na microestrutura e densificação do compósito Al2O3–Cu. Pós de Al2O3 e Cu na razão de 5% em massa de Cu foram moídos por até 100 horas em moinho planetário de alta energia. A razão em massa de pó para bola usada foi de 1:5. O álcool etílico foi usado como solvente. Na moagem, amostras de pós foram colhidas após 2, 10, e 50 horas. Pós moídos foram prensados uniaxialmente em matriz cilíndrica a 100 MPa e sinterizados a 1.300°C por 1 hora sob atmosfera de Ar e H2. A taxa de aquecimento foi de 10°C/min. Análises de DRX, AG caracterizaram os pós moídos. O MEV e o EDS foi empregado para observar a microestrutura das partículas dos pós moídos e dos corpos sinterizados. Um pequeno tamanho de partícula da fase cerâmica e uma estrutura mais homogênea são produzidos quando os pós foram moídos até 100 horas.

This report describes the tri-n-butyl phosphate extraction of cerium (IV) from a sulfate leach liquor prepared from a bastnaesite concentrate as well as from pure eerie nitrate solutions. The work was done on a laboratory scale using separatory funnels. Extraction from pure cerium solutions entailed no great difficulties; however, extraction from the bastnaesite solution proved more difficult, mainly because of the inhibiting effect of the sulfate ion. Despite this, procedures were developed for obtaining good single-state cerium extraction (95+ percent) and a high-purity product (99+ percent), although the maximization of both cannot be achieved simultaneously. This necessitates a compromise in any extraction scheme.

The effect of particle size on the flotation of coarse particles is analyzed. It is concluded that turbulence and the presence of the froth layer are detrimental to the recovery of coarse particles during conventional flotation. A counter-current column cell is proposed to avoid these two factors. In this column, a net upwards flow of water is prevalent, such that no froth is allowed to form on the top. Also, the levitation of heavy bubble-particle aggregates is helped by the ascending water current. Preliminary work at laboratory level with kilogram-size samples indicated that under similar conditions recoveries in the column were much higher than in conventional cells. Flotation results obtained with coarsely sized phosphate and quartz samples are presented. One interesting feature of this type of column is very fast flotation kinetics. Thus, a short column (only 55-cm collection zone) yielded, full recovery of floatable values.

In response to Dr. Ledoux&apos;s paper, a large number of metallurgical establishments and individual assayers expressed their willingness to co-operate in the plan he proposed. The necessary samples were prepared as follows : Matte.—A car-load of matte was put through a Blake crusher, then automatically subdivided into tenths by a Taylor and Brunton sampler, and one-tenth passed through Cornish rolls and through a 12-mesh screen. This was again subdivided by an automatic sampler into tenths, and a final tenth, representing 1 per cent. of the original lot, was finished by hand-sampling on an iron floor until 100 pounds remained. This was pulverized to pass a 40-mesh screen and then thoroughly mixed and divided in the presence of my assistant for distribution to the parties co-operating. Copper Borings.—These were taken from a lot of anodes, the dip-samples from several batches having been united, remelted and cast into a plate, which was proved by assay to be of uniform quality in its different parts. Borings from this plate were intimately mixed and divided in the presence of my assistant. Samples were sent out November 1,1894, with the following letter: New York City, November 1, 1894. Samples of matte and copper (about I pound each) carefully prepared in the presence of my assistant and sealed with his seal as below, are sent you by express for assay and report according to the plan of Dr. Ledoux. INTRODUCTION Every day mine management and mining personnel face the threat of a possible mine disaster or fire. Their ability to deal with such a situation safely and effectively depends on the level of emergency preparation developed and maintained. After conducting numerous informal evaluations or audits at different mine sites throughout West Virginia (as well as other states), the authors concluded that many mining operations are not prepared to handle a fire situation. The results of the audits indicate that while most mines are in compliance with federal and state legal regulations regarding levels of emergency equipment, water systems and training sessions, these levels - particularly in the area of fire training - are probably not sufficient to enable the mine employees to effectively combat a fire in its early stage. This paper will present the authors&apos; recommendations for designing and maintaining an efficient mine emergency preparedness Program and an overview of the curriculum of the mine fire training Program currently being conducted. MINE EMERGENCY FXEPAREDNESS PROGRAM The Mine Emergency Preparedness Pro- gram (MEPP) is a management tool developed by the Mining Extension Service at West Virginia University and was designed to assist company personnel in effectively managing a mine emergency operation. The program goes beyond the traditional and required training of mine rescue teams by offering a complete emergency operations package. Included in MEPP are suggested approaches for training and organizing all personnel, ideas for developing plans of action concerning transportation, security and communications. The MEPP program may also be used as to assess present readiness levels. While the MEPP program is designed to address all types of emergency operations, the authors are convinced that emergencies involving mine fires are the ones of greatest concern and so are concentrating their efforts in that direction. Incidents where fires are involved seem to be increasing in frequency and are extremely costly to control if allowed to go beyond the incipient stages. With a proper emergency preparedness program in place and properly trained and equipped fire brigades, the authors feel that it is possible

Steel and concrete piles and power-actuated hammers have developed almost entirely within the past 100 years. Prior to that time, piles were mostly timber, driven with a drop hammer or a maul. The Engineering News Formula ? for timber piles driven with a drop hammer at a factor of safety of six ? was promulgated by Wellington in 1888. Steel com­panies supplied fabricated and rolled shapes for piles in the early 1900&apos;s. The thin shell and then uncased concrete piles originated about that time. Now leads have become sophisticated to accurately spot a pile at any required batter. Hammers have grown to phenomenal size and vibratories are being accepted at full value.
