During shallow tunneling in an urban environment, deposits or pockets of saturated soil or fractured, weathered rock are often encountered. Under such conditions, special problems with tunnel support, underpinning of structures adjacent to the tunneling, and/or flow of groundwater into the tunnel occur. If the ground conditions are appropriate, i.e., the soil is sandy, silty or fissured, or the rock is weathered or fractured, the solution to these tunneling problems may be chemical stabilization of the ground. Injection stabilization as an aid to tunneling is practiced extensively in Europe and its use is increasing in the U.S. The advantages of this technique over conventional solutions can be substantial in terms of cost and time, especially in mechanized tunnel boring where even a small zone of soft ground can bring the tunneling to a complete halt. In this paper European practice in using chemical ground stabilization for urban tunneling will be reviewed. In contrast to previous papers which have dealt with specific applications (1,5,8,9) this paper will broadly cover the subject, addressing itself to grouting techniques, costs, the reasons for grouting, philosophy of the users towards grouting, design of grouting solutions (or lack thereof) and methods of quality control. Differences with U.S. grouting practice are also noted. The information presented is derived from several visits to Europe, discussions with European and U.S. grouting personnel, and the available literature (2). The author's most recent European trip was made under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Transportation in conjunction with a research study being performed at Stanford University; a detailed report of this visit is available in reference (6).

The north-eastern half of the Yilgarn Block of Archaean Rocks lies in the and zone of Western Australia. In recent years a large number of gold mines have been established there, all requiring water supplies from local groundwater. The groundwater sources that have been utilised canprise bedrock, pre-Quaternary channel deposits, and Quaternary alluvium. In the search for groundwater each type of occurrence is considered, and the choice is made on the supply potential and logistics. This paper deals with groundwater in bedrock. Using examples, sane principles of the geology of groundwater occurrence are illustrated.

"Generation and removal of fines are considered in the context of the mill and classifier as a single-unit process in which grinding rates and mechanisms, mill residence time distribution, circulating load, and classifier performance all interact to effect the overall grinding circuit productivity. Required process design specifications are identified, and a computer assisted design procedure for application of hydrocyclones in closed circuit grinding is presented. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of the grinding circuit is to carry out the size reduction necessary to suitably prepare material for the upgrading process(I) The desired product size specification being the d1st1nguishing criterion between the ""fines"" (smaller than desired product size) and the ""coarse"" fraction (larger than desired product size), the capability of the grinding circuit to perform its task effectively depends on the nature of two processes that are taking place;(a) size reduction of the coarse material, and,(b) removal of fines from the system."

George Edward WebbeR, a member of the Institute since 1906, died in San Francisco, May 29,1922. Born in Dixmont, Me., in 1852, he went to California in 1857 where he lived until 1883 and received a thorough training in precious metal mining in the employ of his father and J. B. Haggin. In 1883, he went to the Black Hills, South Dakota, as superintendent of the Father DeSmit mine; later the Deadwood Terra also came under his management. These mines are now part of the Homestake Mining Co. In 1889, the Rothchilds asked Hamilton Smith to recommend an engineer to take the place of the late Henning Jennings, who had resigned from the El Calloo Mining Co., of El Calloo, Venezuela, in order that he might proceed to South Africa. Mr. Webber accepted the position, remaining there until 1893 when he returned to the United States on his way to Johannesburg, South Africa, where he had been appointed manager of the Crown Reef Mining Co., Ltd. Early in 1896, he became general manager of the Rand Mines, Ltd., and served in this capacity until 1911. During the latter part of this period, Mr. Webber was active in the greater amalgamations of H. Eckstein & Co., and it was largely on his advice that H. Eckstein & Co. carried out the negotiations preceding the formation of the Crown Mines, Ltd. On his retirement from South Africa, he returned to live in Ross Valley, near San Francisco, Cal. The Rand Mines, Ltd., of which Mr. Webber was general manager, was the largest company controlled by Wernher Beit, the leading London house interested in South Africa mining, whose local agents in Johannesburg were H. Eckstein & Co. This firm is now known as the Central Mining & Investment Corpn., and after the departure of Henning Jennings, Mr. Webber was the firm's most valued and confidential advisor and was very highly thought of in mining circles in South Africa. He was a ma of most upright and straightforward high character, plain spoken and sincere; and his recognized high character was one more qualification which aided his great success.

In presenting a summary of the uses of fine and pulverized coal the writer has borne in mind that we are not trying to determine what a combustion engineer should know but we are only trying to find out in what ways the consumption of slack can be stimulated. First discussing the use of powdered coal it can be stated that it has passed the first experimental stage but is still capable of much development and improvement. It has already found successful application in stationary and locomotive boilers, cement kilns, calcining furnaces, reverberatory smelting furnaces and many other types of furnaces, such as open hearth furnaces and annealing furnaces. For stationary boilers it seems to have been thoroughly demonstrated that powdered coal is more efficient than stoker installations. Over-all efficiences of boiler and furnace in stoker installations of the best type run from 70 to 76 per cent; whereas the efficiency of powdered coal installations averages slightly over 80 per cent. However, due to the increased cost of pulverized coal, the increased efficiency of these installations over stokers, from a money stand-point, will not be more than 1 or 2 per cent. The fusing of the ash in pulverized coal installations has given some trouble but apparently is easily overcome, on the other hand the fine ash, which is carried along with the draft, causes trouble both in the boiler and by settling on surrounding buildings or ground. Offsetting the disadvantages the great advantages of pulverized coal for stationary boilers seem to be: First-the ease with which a change in the load on the boiler can be taken care of. Second-when a boiler is cut out for a short period the "stand-by" losses are much less and, Third-a much poorer grade of fuel can be used. In many cases where pulverized coal has been used it has replaced slack coal which is of little advantage to the coal operator. However,, in other places it has replaced gas or oil and this is where the coal man is interested. Pulverized coal has the same advantages as the liquid or gas fuel but the question as to which is preferable depends on their relative cost at the point of use. In small stationary boilers where stokers are not used, very frequently the larger sizes of coal are, and it would be an advantage to the coal industry for them to be converted so as to burn pulverized coal, but so far there are only records of a few of such small installations having been a success and there is apparently room for a large amount of experimentation. In furnaces, such as smelting and assaying furnaces, annealing furnaces, etc., slack coal is not used and where pulverized coal has been installed it nearly always replaces fuel oil or gas. Just how much increased consumtion of coal can be made by pulverizing it for use in furnaces of this type can not be determined but it seems worthy of investigation. For locomotive boilers pulverized coal has found some application up to date but where it was being used in the United States it was stopped when we entered the war. In Brazil, however, the Central Railway has been using pulverized coal for locomotives with excellent results. If it could be possible to apply it to locomotive use where fuel oil is now used, or the larger sizes of coal, it would certainly make a big difference in the slack situation. Now as to the uses of slack coal without pulverizing. The writer's investigations lead him to believe that the greatest opportunities in this direction are in the line of increasing its use by apartment houses and small home owners. In fact in looking into the subject I found that a number of men in Salt Lake City are using run of mine coal in the usual type of house furnaces, some of them by separating the fines and wetting them down before feeding to the furnace claim they get no loss whatever through the grate. However, for best results with fine coal different types of furnaces must be installed and for apartment houses it would seem necessary to have either a small automatic stoker or else spray the fine coal in with an air blast from

The process of defining the external environmental costs of mining activities, devising appropriate mechanisms to internalise them is complex and is likely to be a gradual.Australia's competitiveness could be seriously affected if , in terms of incorporating environmental costs, we were to exceed other resource producing nations.Australia has a great deal at stake in the debate and therefore we need to proceed carefully and be fully aware of the environmental and economic issues.

A strain of Thiobacillus ferruuxidans No. 8 was isolated from the acidic mine water of an arsenopyrite deposit, South China. It has been found from the experimental results that the growth of bacteria was inhibited by flotation agents. The order of toxic effect of different flotation agents on the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is ethyl xanthate > butyat ammonium aerofloat > butyl xanthate ? isobutyt xauthate >? flother No. 2 oil. The bioteaching treatment of arsenic and antimony-bearing gold concentrate in Longshan mine, Hunan province, China, was influenced considerably by the presence of flotation agents. The possible causes of the influence of flotation agents were discussed and an improved method was suggested.

Both client and end user are quite rightly influenced by their own experiences. The question is who is right, the client and his consultant, the supplier or perhaps a combination of these. This paper looks at some of the fundamental variances that often occur in the approach to the mechanical design of drum hoists, based on our experiences of recent years. Bioleaching of solid wastes lithium ion battery industries was carried out in this investigation. A new method for recovery of cobalt, potentially the basis of an economic and environmentally friendly process was examined. The present study was conducted using chemolithotrophic and acidophilic bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and some mixed thiobacilli collected from abandoned mine drainage. These organisms were able to utilize sulfur and ferrous ion as energy source. Bio-dissolution of cobalt was found to be faster than lithium. The effect of initial Fe(II) concentration, initial pH and solid/liquid (w/v) ratio were studied in detail. With increase of time of leaching the dissolution of cobalt was found to be increased and this must be due to competitiveness of the mixed thiobacilli for utilizing the energy source among them. Since the bacteria are belonging to acidophilic group the higher pH studies revealed a decrease trend in metal dissolution. Higher solid/liquid ratio also found to be detrimental for the bacterial activity. It seems bacteria are not resistant to higher concentration of the metal. The optimized conditions for bio-dissolution were sol-id/liquid (w/v) ratio - 10 g/L, initial Fe(II) concentration - 5 g/L, elemental sulfur - 1% (w/v). In the optimized conditions, cobalt dissolution was observed to be about 75 % whereas that of lithium was 15% after 25 days.

The author, who himself has worked inn the field with various types of torsion balances, expresses in the article his experience with the recently marketed Haff-Torsion-Balance. The advantages of practical work with Haff?s s torsion balance as compared with other types are mentioned. In spite of low weight and corresponding small dimensions (Model M = 23.5 kg., Model Al = 11.5 kg.) the sensitiveness is not less than that in the largest instruments. It is at 1.10-9, which is proved by calculations. A comparison with the corresponding values of other types of torsion balances (Eötvös, Askania, Gepege) is given. The mechanical features of the instrument are briefly described, and the balance is illustrated by a, cross section of it. -- W. Ayvazoglou. With a focus on safe productive tonnes, there has been an ongoing drive to increase the productivity of the mining fleet across BHP Billiton. In response, a team from the Iron Ore business was formed to review all aspects of the end-to-end drill and blast process and to challenge conventional practices that limit production efficiency. As a result of the outcomes of this work, a number of initiatives were identified to improve operational practices that have also delivered significant cost savings.One such initiative was to increase pattern size to a minimum of 1 Mt where practicable, thereby creating ‘megablast’ as a new standard across all mines. To achieve blasts of this size, the team had to overcome the complex problem of integrating wall control into the megablasts.With traditional blasting techniques, the key strategy, which is also historically inefficient but was thought to be integral to having stable, safe walls, was to utilise the trim blasting/modified production blasts technique (ie narrow blasts along the pit wall designed to ‘peel off’ the material while minimising the effects of vibration and charge confinement on wall integrity).Small traditional trim patterns comprise three to four rows of production holes and one or two rows of batter/buffer holes of reduced diameter that require the firing face to be completely exposed before blasting. This is an extremely slow process that requires a lot of resources for very little tonnage while adding additional expense to the final cost per tonne.This paper will show how the megablast approach was developed to control damaging vibration and confinement effects, flyrock and fragmentation while having the largest possible blast that includes wall control. The new practice is based on a theory that involves the initiation point and control row being the second row of holes from the pit wall itself. Adjusted charges in vented batter and buffer holes help to achieve an optimal toe design, and at the same time create a zone of broken ground that absorbs damaging vibrations formed by the attached production blast of any size, whether it is a straight wall or a multi-angled complex pit shell design.Using the new style of blasting has allowed an increase in the size of the patterns from an average of 300 kt to over 1 Mt whilst maintaining pit wall integrity. Case studies will be presented showing drill, charge and tie-in designs with the presentation having additional blast videos, including overall shots of blasts and in-close footage of what happens behind the blast at the crest of the planned catchment berm.The paper will also demonstrate the flow-on effect of using this style of blasting to reduce operational costs associated with other downstream processes, such as the reduced requirements for pattern preparation, an increase in productive digging, reduced maintenance costs and a decrease in fuel burn for equipment.CITATION:Green, B, 2015. The accurate assessment of the in situ deformability of rock masses is very important in the de and construction of underground openings for mining and geotechnical engineering applications. This paper presents a method and device for determining the in situ deformability of rock masses by relating the borehole jack load to the diametral displacements at a number of orientations around the borehole wall. The method called mu1tiple measurement method include the steps in which: a) diametral displacement sensors are installed at different orientations around the borehole to measure the changes in length of various diameters of the borehole; b) a uniaxial load is applied on two opposed octants of the borehole wall, and; c) using elastic theory and assuming a reasonable value for the Poisson's Ratio of the rock mass, the in situ deformability of the surrounding rock materials is determined from the measured diametral displacements and applied unidirectional load. The multiple measurement method has a significant advantage over existing methods since it provides several independent data in a single test from which to calculate the in situ deformability of the rock mass. The multiple data provide a check and counter check on the reliability and accuracy of the various measurements. The multiple data would also provide a means of quantifying the degree of fissuring on the borehole wall. Information on the degree of fissuring is very important in numerical modeling of rock masses.

The US minerals posture will be increasingly dominated by three interrelated factors. First, when viewed over the long range, the US supply situation can be expected to steadily deteriorate as demand increases. Domestic high-grade ores have been used up, and other nations compete with the US for world supplies. Second, as environmental awareness becomes more acute, an aroused citizenry is demanding that minerals industries conform their operations to rigorous new standards. Finally, the changing energy situation that confronts the US is forcing an appraisal of energy-use patterns on operations previously guided solely by economic principles and not by national priorities. While future US mineral production and consumption patterns are unclear at this time, it is certain that US demand for minerals will continue to outrun domestic supply. Thus, the US is faced with a challenge of producing more minerals and metals from lower grade resources. Meeting this challenge means a strengthening of US research and development efforts, coupled with their application in the remaining leadtimes available. Some specific examples of how the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) is assisting in the processing of low-grade resources follow.

Geological problems are approached from a geometrical (space relations) viewpoint, a kinematical (time sequence) viewpoint, or a dynamical viewpoint. The first two require sound training in conventional geology and in field methods. The third approach requires a solid foundation of chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Modern training for geologists should include close integrltion of basic sciences with geological principles. Introduction Our knowledge of the earth has increased tremendously during the last half century. We know more about its surface configuration, the distribution of its natural resources, the proccssion of living forms that inhabited it in the past, the chemical composition of its oceans, the areal distribution of its surface rocks, the movements of its atmosphere, and so on. Not only do we know more facts about the earth, but we have a better understanding of the processes that take place on and within it, such as the nature of earthquakes, the thermodynamics of the atmosphere, the chemical equilibria involved in the formation of igneous rocks, the mechanics of stream flow, the dynamics of the earth's origin, and so on. Many sciences contributed to the sum total of this knowledge, including such established disciplines as geology, geography, physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology. Out of this accumulation of new knowledge grew also a group of new sciences, such as seismology, oceanography, meteorology, volcanology, hydrology. Collectively these latter are known as the geophysical and geochemical sciences, and to a large extent they began as branches of geology. Until the turn of the century, for example, the study of earthquakes (seismology) was a part of geology, although as early as 1846 Mallet, a physicist, had suggested that the subject could be investigated by elastic-wave theory. Comparatively little progress was made along these lines until the seismograph was developed near the turn of the century; since then, additional earthquake data have accurnul~ted rapidly, but more important, the interpretation of these data essentially has kept pace with their accumulation. In similar fashion, meteorology was generally considered a branch of geology as recently as one or two decades ago. Considerable progress had been made in such aspects as weather forecasting, but the science dates its recent rapid rise from the year 1911, when Bjerknes first applied the principles of dynamics to the analysis of air masses. The rapid development of such disciplines as oceanography, volcanology and hydrology was due in part to the application of principles of chemical equilibrium, of dynamics, and of thermodynamics to earth problems, by men who were essentially physicists or chemists by training. The last half century, therefore, and particularly the last two decades, saw the influx of numerous chemists and physicists into the realm of the earth sciences. During the last 12 months, Sandvik?s Technical Service Group has carried out nine Scoping and Pre-feasibility studies for the application of In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) for large mining companies; the majority in conjunction with the Snowden Consulting Group. During these studies several key and recurring drivers have been identified: 1. Mining schedule issues ? there are several issues which crop up repeatedly, including: ?the unnecessary curvature of pit walls, ?very high rates of vertical advance which are (created by schedule optimisers to minimise stripping at all times) which are at the limit of what can be realistically achieved (and which of course make it harder for IPCC to achieve any impact), and ?The allocation of material to semi-mobile systems to maximise the ability for IPCC to be an effective alternative. 2. IPCC productivity issues ? the key issues are the IPCC system operating hours achievable, and the system throughput (both instantaneous and the average). 3. IPCC Risk issues ? there are perceptions about the risks associated with the use of IPCC which are a mix of reality and fiction, but which nonetheless create negativity towards the use of IPCC. In this paper, the authors wish to address specifically the factors affecting the IPCC productivity.

This paper provides an insight into the current status of risk management practices within our industry, based on an industry wide survey, with deliberate cross-reference to quantitative analysis. This survey showed that quantitative assessments appear to be mainly hampered only by the lack of reliable data and industry expertise to carry out such assessments. A short case study will illustrate some of the necessary basic tools and data types that would enable the industry to tap into an additional range of business improvement dimensions to more effectively manage the diverse and changing risk profile of the mining sector.

Prediction of ground vibration (peak particle velocity, PPV) and frequency is an important task in geoscience. Till date, many empirical equations are derived from conducting trial blasts in the mines, to arrive at attenuation predictors. These predictors are usually site dependant and hold good for one particular type of rock/strata. These predictors cannot be used for geologically different rocks/strata. This paper presents the application of support vector machine (SVM) model, for predicting blast induced ground vibration and frequency, using a one comprehensive model for three different types of rock. Inputs to the SVM model formulation involve twenty one parameters consisting of geotechnical properties of the rock mass, blast design geometry and explosive properties, and the output of the formulated model is peak particle velocity and its associated frequency. The data has been acquired from eight limestone mine, five coal mine and two manganese mines. The comprehensive SVM model is formulated using 400 datasets and tested with 143 datasets. The performance indicators to the model not only justify its formulation but also the advantages it has over site specific predictor models. The SVM model not only predicts PPV, with higher correlation coefficients as compared to predictor equations, but also the associated frequency.

Environmental regulations require means for controlling emissions of SO2 NOx and particulate when burning coal. The combustion of coal in limestone fluidized beds is one of the most promising techniques for the necessary reduction in emissions. Fluidized-bed firing, furthermore, offers potential economies in capital equipment. The world's largest steam generator applying fluidized-bed techniques was built under the sponsorship of ERDA and installed in Rivesville, West Virginia. This paper describes the design and discusses the start-up and development difficulties which were experienced during the period from initial operation to current readiness for commercial operation. Other developments leading to utility and industrial fluidized-bed steam generating equipment are reviewed. The future potential of this promising technique is discussed.
