As recently as the late 1920's there Were few indications that a 15-million-dollar-a-year industry would ever grow out of the mineralogic curiosity vermiculite. Today, it is an important industrial commodity, used primarily as an insulating material and lightweight aggregate, but with a wide range of other applications. The quantity of crude vermiculite produced and used in the United States increased 14-fold in the 17 years between 1935 and 1951. The vermiculite minerals are of secondary origin, formed by hydrothermal alteration of an ultrabasic igneous rock, generally pyroxenite, or by alteration of phlogopite or biotite mica or possibly other similar minerals. According to different authorities, vermiculite may originate either by direct hydrothermel means, by the weathering of biotite or phlogopite, or by a combination of these two agencies. Vermiculites frequently occur at or near the contacts of an acid intrusive rock, especially a pegmatite dike, with a basic or ultrabasic country rock.

The New York Trap Rock Corporation has four plants located along the Hudson River, all within 70 miles of New York City. The company produces crushed stone for use as construction aggregate, with a total annual production amounting to 6 million tons. The crushed stone is moved to markets in metropolitan New York, New Jersey and Long island areas by water transportation. There are daily deliveries of approximately 35 scowloads to the market area. Its customers are contractors with ready-mixed concrete and asphalt plants located on the water, where the aggregate is unloaded for its ultimate use. For a number of years capital equipment was replaced only when the current operating machinery was no longer serviceable, or when' a need was apparent for a different type of equipment. There was no particular regard for efficiency or for operating and maintenance costs. Such lack of system often resulted in the emergency purchase of equipment which was later found to be unsuitable for the job. A few years ago it became apparent that a systematic procedure was necessary. After evaluation of several systems, an individualized plan was evolved from the basic pattern developed by the Machinery and Allied Products Institute. The system adopted by New York Trap Rock has proved wholly satisfactory.

"Quantitative evaluation of secondary support performance in longwall tailgates in U.S. coal mines was introduced with the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Wood Crib Performance Model. This model evaluated crib performance based on load capacity, stability, and convergence characteristics. The introduction of a large variety of alternative secondary supports in the 1990s prompted a full-scale load-displacement testing program conducted by the USBM and, subsequently, NIOSH. The application of the ground response curve concept to secondary supports provided a more complete estimation of secondary support loading in longwall abutment zones. Secondary support loading from floor heave, horizontal stress effects, and pillar yield are captured by the ground response curve. A point on the ground response curve can be measured by instrumenting a secondary support with load and convergence measurement devices. A segment of the ground response curve can be measured by instrumenting two secondary support types of varying stiffness. Numerical models have been used to construct complete ground response curves for longwall tailgates based on measured secondary support performance. The ground response curve concept can be used as a design methodology for secondary supports in the #2 entry, as well as the longwall tailgate. Extending published evaluation and design methodologies for secondary support in longwall tailgates, a ground response curve unique to the loading conditions and required functionality of the #2 entry can be developed. Numerical models can be used to construct full ground response curves based on measured data in the #2 entry.INTRODUCTIONA longwall ventilation system is designed to continuously dilute and move methane-air mixtures and other contaminants from the active face, to bleeder systems, and out of the mine. The #2 entry of the tailgate gateroad serves to transport contaminated air from the longwall face to the bleeder system. The #2 entry is required to function as an air course between two longwall gobs and is subject to significant ground movement and loading. Current ground support design and evaluation practices are based on empirical evidence and little to no quantitative data on support performance exists for these entries. Substantial volumes of research have been conducted on ground movement and support performance in longwall tailgate entries. Following the successful ground support evaluation and design practices established for longwall tailgate entries, a practical and efficient design methodology can be adapted for supporting the #2 entry of a three-entry gateroad system."

"International competition is presenting the Canadian steel industry with a major challenge. While Canadian companies have invested in new technology, research and development, activity by Canadian industry, in general, lags significantly behind that of its major competitors. While OECD countries increased their research and development spending during the 1980s, Canada's R&D funding levels have changed little since the early 1970s and have actually dropped since 1986, despite greater public discussion on the issue. This fact is reflected in the relatively slower pace of innovation in the Canadian steel industry, despite the efforts of both government and industry.In addition, there are a number of factors that undermine the competitiveness of the Canadian steel industry, in particular in relation to the United States. Among these are higher interest rates, labour costs and tax rates, as well as an overvalued Canadian dollar. Canadian steel companies are thus feeling the full impact of the current economic recession. This recession, combined with recent strikes, have, for example, caused serious losses for Algoma and Stelco.In spite of these objective difficulties, the Canadian steel industry has been able to survive and continues to strive for a leadership position in the world market. Since World War II, heavy investment in new technology has allowed the industry to upgrade its facilities and increase productivity, while at the same time improving quality and reducing pollution. This last point is particularly important in view of public insistence on improvements to the quality of the environment. Over the next decade, this technological innovation must be maintained and intensified if industry is to meet the challenge of international competition and attain a leadership position."

A phenomenological model is presented for leaching silver from silver sulfide contained in mineral particles with ammoniacal thiosulfate solutions of copper in stirred reactors. Experimental results were used to adjust the kinetic parameters of the model, such as the reaction order and velocity. The incorporation of the cuprous sulfide-silver sulfide equilibrium at the reaction interface allowed the prediction of the conversion limits for different reagent concentrations. The information obtained from the reactor model was later integrated into a heap leaching simulation, whose results adequately describe tendencies observed in column tests, with respect to variations in copper and thiosulfate concentrations. A study uras made on the creep behavior of cast and extruded SR grade beryllium. It is shown that, for stresses below about 1000 psi in the temperature range 760" to 85o° c, the creep behatior is nearly exactly described by the Nabarro-Herring mechanism. The activation energy is apparently that for self-diffusion, 42 2 kcal per mole, below 1000 psi, but it rises to 88.6' kcal per mole at higher stresses. The slress exponent is 4.5 at the higher stresses. Tertiary creep in this material is clearly related to void formation apparently caused by grain boundary sliding. BERYLLIUM is becoming an increasingly important technological material. A search of the literature has revealed a lack of fundamental studies on the creep of beryllium. This investigation was therefore undertaken to gain insight into the creep behavior of this material. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Tensile creep samples were prepared from cast and extruded SR grade beryllium. The vendor's chemical analysis of the beryllium tested is shown in Table I. The test specimens were machined as shown in Fig. 1 from i -in.-diam rods. The machined creep specimens were annealed to remove surface damage and to establish a variation in grain size. The heat treatments and their resulting grain diameters are shown in Table 11. The average grain diameters were determined by the intercept method. True average grain diameters were estimated by multiplying the measured average grain diameters by 1.5.' The creep tests were performed at temperatures from 700" to 850°C in a vacuum of 105 Torr or better in a tantalum-element resistance furnace. Loads were applied by an Instron testing machine such that the stress was held constant to within 20 psi. The test temperature was measured by thermocouples on the sample. With one exception the deviation from the desired test temperature was 2"C, and in that case the deviation was 4"C. Elongations were measured by an extensometer within the vacuum chamber which was fastened to the creep specimens at the grooves in the grip ends, as shown in Fig. 1. The precision of measurement of elongation was 1 X loe4 in. The creep tests were begun only after thermal equilibrium had been established in the sample and the extensometer to insure that there was no strain rate component due to transient thermal effects. Two kinds of creep experiments were performed. First, at constant grain size, the effects of varying stress and temperature were studied. In the second set of experiments, the temperature was held constant and the grain size was varied. The activation energy for creep was determined by varying the temperature at constant stress, as described by orn, during the first set of experiments. The variable grain size experiments revealed that creep at low stress apparently occurred by the abarro-errin' mechanism. In all of the creep tests, the stress was held constant only until sufficient strain had occurred to accurately determine the creep rate. The stress was then raised to a new value and the new creep rate determined. This process was reported until tertiary creep occurred. In this manner several data points were obtained from each specimen. The assumption was made that the structure was not changing appreciably between the incremental stress levels. This was verified by reducing stresses to previously tested levels and comparing the creep rates with the creep rates obtained at the lower strains. The re-producibility was within experimental error over strains on the order of 1 pct. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A typical series of creep tests is shown in Fig. 2. Primary creep was not observed in any test. Transient creep, which we define as creep rates that are nonlinear with time, was not observed for any change in stress except where tertiary creep occurred. The absence of both primary and transient creep has been previously reported for hot-pressed powder beryllium.= The data for the creep behavior at constant grain size are summarized in Fig. 3. This paper describes the ventilation planning that was per- formed at the Barrick Gold Corporation, El lndio Mine. The El lndio Mine is located at an elevation of approximately 4,000 m in the Andes mountains east of the coastal city of La Serena, Chile. The ventilation planning program consisted of a detailed ventilation survey of the mine and the establishment of a correlated com- puter model. A series of network simulations were conducted to determine the optimum position, size, and configuration of new ventilation raises and main fan exhaust system. Modifications to existing mine infrastructure including; driving of drifts, slashing of airways, and positioning of ventilation controls were examined. Detailed costing information was developed to optimize the location of the new main exhaust raises and fan system. The final ventilation system is expected to increase the mine airflow from the existing 157 m=/s to over 315 mls. This increase was necessary to accommodate an expansion in mine production, diesel equipment utilization, and deeper mine development. Furthermore, the increased airflow was required because of the de-rating of diesel equipment and large air volumes necessary to dilute diesel exhaust at high elevation.

Assessing the occurrence of natural ground-water recharge at mine and mill waste disposal sites may be crucial to addressing regulatory agency concerns regarding the potential impact of waste seepage on ground-water resources. Recharge has been shown to occur even in semi-arid areas where annual lake evaporation exceeds precipitation. Permanent storage of waste seepage in the unsaturated zone is not to be expected if recharge occurs under natural conditions. Establishing the direction and rate of fluid movement in the vadose zone by field measurements is an important element that should be included in the site selection process.

IT is now generally conceded that coal is the product of deposition and transformation of debris of forests and swamps.29 Ample data are available to illustrate the metamorphosis of biochemical substances through biological action; other data show the progressive regional metamorphism existing in coal beds;25 and numerous examples of change effected by intrusion of igneous dikes into coal deposits have been established .R3 However, often the relative importance of the biological and the geological factor in determining the character of the various natural coals is a debatable question. Since both biological and geological factors are ever present in nature, the problem, at first glance, would appear to resemble certain probability problems: specifically the simultaneous toss of two coins, with the biological factor as heads and the geological as tails. The probability is 2:I for the combined effect of both factors, as compared to the exclusive effect of either one, if the a priori probability is the same for each factor. This condition can be analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment of data, which may be obtained from a consideration of pertinent biological, chemical, geophysical and geological facts. SYNOPSIS OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL FACTS The biosphere is not sterile; i.e., microorganisms are always present. Microorganisms have been established in the ocean deep, under the ice of the polar regions, in the sand of the deserts, and in swamps far below the surface. The various biological media may be acid, neutral, or alkaline, and they may or may not be readily accessible to air. Microorganisms are encountered almost everywhere, except where the temperature is not within the range tolerable by microbial life. Of course, with changing conditions, the type of microorganisms will change. All chemical products of life-proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resinsmay serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium, some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate.17,32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. Coals differ in type and rank. The nature of the original vegetation and the conditions attending the transformation of the accumulated debris determine the type of coal such as bright, splint, cannel, and algal or boghead coals. A recent survey of 23 vein-type metal mining operations in several western states discloses that some of the more serious deficiencies in ventilation technology are associated with inordinately high levels of mine resistance. This problem has progressively increased over many years of operation (without adequate remedial action) as mines have become extended in depth. Where two shafts form the downcast and upcast airways of a relatively deep mine, the whole of the mine air volume must pass through each shaft in turn. Since at least one of these shafts contains hoisting equipment, structural members are necessary to support the rigid guides and shaft walls. These offer high aerodynamic resistance. In some deep mines, a single shaft of this nature may represent upwards of one-half of the total mine resistance. The second shaft, depending upon its design, may represent an additional one-third of the mine resistance. Therefore, the various working levels throughout the mine contribute only the small remaining amount of the total mine resistance.

Because of problems encountered with conventional timber supports, a system of concrete sausageshaped support pillars was tested. The pillars are 3 m long, 0,6 m wide, and between 70 and 80 cm high (the height of the stoping width). They consist of bags filled with a grout of cement (slagment and sand in the ratio of I :2, and are installed in a staggered pattern 6 m apart on dip and 2 m apart on strike. These support packs have proved successful, and, although they cost more than the timber supports formerly used (R4,63 per cent are supported as against R2,26 for the conventional timber pack), their use is felt to be justified when account is taken of the costs of lost production and low productivity due to the bad hangingwall conditions that occurred with the conventional system.

THE diffusion of copper in silver has been studied by Sawatzky and Jaumot1 and Cahoon and Youdelis.2 Sawatzky and Jaumot measured tracer diffusion in single crystal specimens but the 12.9 h half-life of CU64 limited the time of the diffusion anneal to about 50 hr, and in consequence the minimum temperature of the investigation was 716°C. Cahoon and Youdelis employed polycrystalline diffusion couples, and measured the interdiffusion coefficient over the range 0 to 2 at. pct Cu. These experiments were performed at temperatures down to 630°C and a discontinuity in the Arrhenius plot was observed at -700°C. The high D-values at lower temperatures were attributed to the effect of grain boundary diffusion. The present experiments were undertaken to investigate this anomaly and study the low temperature region of the diffusion of copper in silver. The method employed single crystal samples and a plated source of copper. Silver single crystals 2½ by 4 in. sq were grown from zone-refined silver bar (>99.99 pct Ag) by the Bridgeman technique, and $ in. thick slices were cut by spark machining. The specimens were electro-polished, and a 2 µm layer of copper was electroplated on to the planar surface at one end of each specimen using a potentiostatic voltage source. The following solution was used for plating: CuSO4 . 5H2O 125 gm H2SO4 (S.G. 1.8) 53 ml H2O 1000 ml The diffusion couples were sealed in capsules, in an argon atmosphere, and were annealed at either 701, 597, or 498°C. The temperature measurements were made to an accuracy of *l°C After the anneal, the penetration of copper into the silver was determined using an electron probe micro-analyzer. 100 sec scaler measurements of the intensity of Cu Ka! X-radiation were performed at 2 to 5 µm intervals along a line normal to the source, with a beam potential of 25 kv. Allowances were made for the background radiation, and the dead-time of the counting system in the normal way, and the intensity ratios were corrected to weight concentration by the method of Duncumb & de-Casa.3 For the analysis of the diffusion profiles, it was first observed that the copper layer did not completely dissolve in the host crystal for the specimens annealed at 498 and 591 whereas for the specimen annealed at 701°C, a single phase solid solution was formed. "Several Fe, Fe-Cu, and Cu-Ag prospects hosted by Mesozoic carbonate-rich sedimentary rocks that were intruded by diorite stocks define an approximately 20 × 200 km belt along the Andes Cordillera of southwest Mendoza province, Argentina (34°-36°S). This belt includes the Hierro Indio and Vegas Peladas Fe skarns, Las Choicas, and several other Cu-(Ag) prospects.The main features of the Fe skarns include: association with mantle-derived middle Miocene (~15-11 Ma) diorite stocks and sills; widespread alteration including epidote ± amphibole ± magnetite endoskarns, and zoned garnet (Grs0-66 Adr32.5-100) ± magnetite ± pyroxene (Di24-50 Jo2-9 Hd74-41) exoskarns formed from oxidized, saline, high-temperature brines (530º-660ºC; 60-70 wt.% NaCl equiv.); and magnetite-hematite orebodies associated with quartz ± epidote ± calcite ± actinolite formed at lower temperatures (290º-436ºC) from saline fluids (32-50 wt.% NaCl equiv.) of magmatic origin.West of the Fe skarn belt, the Valle Hermoso district covers more than 300 km2 and hosts several poorly known Cu-(Ag) prospects (estimated 30 Mt with 1.5% Cu and 20 g/t Ag). These prospects share many characteristics with the iron oxide copper-gold-type systems and manto-type Cu deposits of northern and central Chile. One of the prospects (Las Choicas) is located at the apex of a regional 015°-trending anticline, along the contact of stratified calcareous sandstone and limestone (Neocallovian-Oxfordian) with a diorite pluton. This pluton has positive Ta and Nb anomalies (on normalized diagrams) and a high Ti content, features uncommon in Miocene diorites associated with Fe skarns and of magmas derived from sub-arc mantle sources. Alteration at Las Choicas includes early widespread chlorite + calcite ± albite ± scapolite ± ilmenite or titanite ± apatite, and local actinolite ± hematite ± biotite alteration of diorite and sedimentary rocks along contacts. Later Cu mineralization (1%-10% Cu) is associated with calcite ± albite ± quartz alteration in fractures, vein networks, and crackle breccias. Mineralization is zoned from bornite ± chalcopyrite ± millerite with Zn, As, Mo, Ag, and U anomalies in the main orebody, through chalcopyrite-rich breccias with Zn anomalies, and chalcopyrite ± tetrahedrite vein networks with Sb, As, Ag, and Zn anomalies in the uppermost zone, to a Cu-depleted pyrite-rich envelope with Co anomalies, and finally to late, barren calcite veins in distal zones."

The effect of grain size on the brittle -ductile transition temperature of pure iron and three dilute Fe-W alloys has been investigated by slow bend tests. The brittle-ductile transition temperature for pure iron increased with increasing grain sizes from 8000 to 500 grains per sq mm where the transition temperature then decreased with further increase in grain size. The dilute additions of tungsten lowered the transition temperature for fine grain sizes, suppressed a reversal of the curve in the coarse grained portion, and raised the transition temperature for this region. The frequency of twin occurrence increased with increasing grain size and decreasing temperature. The object of the present investigation was to re-examine the effect of grain size on the brittle -ductile transition of pure iron and several dilute Fe-W alloys. Current literature normally presents a simple relationship between grain size and the brittle-ductile transition temperature, namely, that the transition temperature increases with increasing grain size. Heslop and etch' have studied the transition temperature of mild steel by V-notch Charpy impact tests for the grain size range between 200 and 6000 grains per sq mm. The result was a linear plot of In 1-1/2 vs brittle-ductile transition temperature, where 1 is the grain diameter. Recent experiments by sipos2 revealed the possibility of a reversal in the slope of the grain size vs transition temperature plot for pure iron; however, his investigation was limited in scope, and the data obtained were insufficient to permit a definitive curve. The present investigation was undertaken in an effort to confirm or extend the grain size effect observed in iron by Sipos. PROCEDURE All alloys were vacuum induction melted, using 99.95 pct Fe containing 0.03 pct 0 and 0.004 pct C. Four ingots were made, ranging from pure iron to iron with 0.035 pct W. The chemical composition of each alloy, after processing, is given in Table I. The four alloys were prepared as 45 lb heats and cast into 4 in. diam by 16 in. molds. They were then extruded into 3/4 in. rods at 1800oF. Specimens for chemical analysis, taken from various positions along the rods, revealed no variation in tungsten content along the length. The extruded rods were reduced to 0.156 in. diam stock by a series of cold swaging operations involving intermediate vacuum annealing treatments. This procedure yielded a final cold reduction in area ranging from 10 to 90 pct. The swaged rods were chemically cleaned, cold pressed to a cross section of 0.10 by 0.18 by 1.0 in. long (2.54 by 4.73 by 25 mm). The specimens were wrapped in iron foil and vacuum sealed (10-4 mm Hg) in quartz. Various heat treatments at temperatures from 700" to 1300oC were utilized to produce grain sizes from 8000 to 1 grain per sq mm. Grain sizes were determined by measuring the average area of grains in a polished section. In specimens with grain size greater than 20 grains per sq mm, the total number of grains in the cross section was counted and then divided by the area to yield grains per sq mm. Grain size was measured both for longitudinal and transverse cross sections. The average of the two measurements was plotted vs transition temperature. An Instron Table Model testing machine was used to determine the transition temperature of specimens tested in three point horizontal bending. The specimen was supported by two 1/4 in. dowels one in. apart. Bending was accomplished with a push rod, the end of which had an 1/8 in. radius. The head speed was 50 in. per min. "Under the auspices of World Federation of Engineering Organizations’ Committee on Engineering and the Environment (WFEO-CEE) and Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) Task Force on Sustainability and Mining (TFSM), and aimed at helping raise global understanding on and promote capacity building of risk management, this paper presents a framework and prototype of toolbox or knowledge warehouse for facilitating the application of risk analysis, mitigation and management techniques (RAMT) in the mining and minerals sector. The conception, design and implementation of the intended system of knowledge warehouse of risk analysis, mitigation and management techniques (KWoRAMT) are outlined. The system architecture of KWoRAMT is based on a browser/server (B/S) structured platform with web oriented interfaces and composed of data base, knowledge warehouse, searching mechanisms, and risk assessment methodologies. The knowledge sources for KWoRAMT will come from the TFSM expertise and Internet, including laws and regulations, codes of practice, standards, guidelines and best practices. The functions and outcomes of KWoRAMT consist of guided navigations with web links, categorized risk tools, annotated best practices with cases, and integrated risk approaches and solutions based on typical risk methods. Risk categories include those impacting on mine safety, mine occupational health, and mine community environment throughout the whole of mine life cycle from exploration, construction, and exploitation and processing to post-mining closure. Mining associated hazards will be identified and linked by vulnerability onto risk receptors through pathways. Risk management techniques for assessing impacts and consequences of mining induced hazards will be categorized with their pros and cons or strengths and weaknesses. Best practices and significant cases including experiences and lessons with problems, solutions, and recommendations on how solutions would be derived will be illustrated. Integrated risk approaches based upon typical methods will be developed for alternatives and actions."

The age-hardening of Fe-18 to 21 pct Ni marten-sites containing small amounts of titanium, aluminum, copper, or molybdenum has been studied by hardness measurements, transmission electron microscopy, extraction replicas, and X-ray and electron diffraction. Electyon-probe microanaly-sis of the extracted precipitates was also performed. The effects of temperature and composition on the aging kinetics have been studied in detail for Fe-20 pctNi-Ti martensites. All the martensites hardened on aging at 400" to 500 "C with a single aging peak. In the Fe-20 pct Ni-Ti martensites hardening was associated with the formation of a fine dispersion of NisTi. No precipitation was observed in an Fe-21 pct Ni-2.6 pct A1 alloy, although the hardness increased from 327 to 545 Dph during aging at 500°C. Copper was precgitated from an Fe-20 pct Ni-10.7pct Cu alloy, at least during the later stages of age-hardening. Hardening in an Fe-18 pctNi-5pct Mo alloy was associated with the precipitation of an intemzetallic compound tentatively identified as NisMo. The formation of austenite and the recovery of the defect structure of the martensite occur simultaneously with the normal precipitation processes &ring aging of these alloys. THE age-hardening of substitutional iron-base martensites is an important subject for study since age-hardening is one of the principal means of strengthening the substitutional iron-base martensites in precipitation-hardening stainless steels1 and maraging steels.a~4 In contrast to Fe-C martensites, these martensites are relatively soft and ductile in the as-quenched condition, due to the low solid-solution hardening effect of the substitutional elements as compared to carbon. Also, these martensites are hardened by aging at low temperatures in contrast to Fe-C martensites which generally soften on tempering. Titanium and aluminum, singly or in combination, as well as copper and molybdenum, have been the principal alloying additions to stainless steels to obtain an age-hardening reaction.' Ti-A1 or Co-Mo-Ti combinations have been used in the case of maraging steels.3"4 The present work has been confined to a study of the age-hardening characteristics of an Fe-18 to 21 pct Ni martensite to which small amounts of titanium, aluminum, copper, and molybdenum were added in order to study the effects of each alloying element separately. The age-hardening characteristics of these alloys were studied by hardness measurements, transmission electron microscopy, extraction replicas, and X-ray and electron diffraction. Electron-probe micro-analysis of the extracted precipitates was also performed. The types and dispersion of precipitates, the formation of austenite, and the recovery of the defect structure of the martensite all were studied. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys. The compositions of the alloys studied are listed in Table I. The level of 18 to 21 pct Ni was chosen to assure complete transformation to martensite on quenching and is the same nickel level used in maraging steels. The concentrations of titanium, aluminum, copper, and molybdenum were chosen after a study of the and Fe-Ni-MO' ternary diagrams indicated how much of each alloying element could be dissolved in austenite. Alloys with 2 and 4 pct Cu were also studied, but these did not show precipitation hardening at the nickel levels studied and will not be discussed further. The alloys were prepared from electrolytic iron and high-purity* nickel, titanium, aluminum, copper, and molybdenum by vacuum melting of 20-lb heats. These were vacuum-cast into two 8-lb ingots. The ingots were hot-rolled at 1100°C to 1/2-in. plate and subsequently cut into 3/8-in. cubes. The cubes were sealed in evacuated quartz capsules and solution-treated for 16 hr at 1100°C, except for the Fe-20 pct Ni-10.7 pct Cu alloy and Fe-21 pct Ni-2.6 pct A1 alloys which were solution-treated for 16 hr at 1300" and at 1250"C, respectively. The northern spur of the Bakhuis Mountains contains bauxite deposits on a dissected planation level, a region formerly indicated as the Adampada-Kabalebo area. Iron-rich laterites are ubiquitous on all more or less flat and horizontal to moderately sloping interfluves and planation levels. The known aluminous laterites and bauxites are restricted to those laterites that have relatively leucocratic and silica-poor parent rocks. The whole area is underlain by high-metamorphic Precambrian. In the northern half of the Guiana Shield at least four Cainozoic planation levels can be distinguished. The bauxite and aluminous laterite deposits are related to the oldest, Early Tertiary level. These deposits, occupying the highest positions in the present day landscape, show the destructive influence of post-laterite weathering, erosion and denud- ation; they are erosion remnants and as such are of irregular thickness, grade and shape. Consequently, exact mineable tonnages can only be determined after intensive and detailed sampling and evaluation, taking into account the latest technical and economic parameters. The bauxite potential of the region is negatively influ- enced by the complicated uplift history of the Bakhuis horst, and positively by the presence of suitable parent rock and possibly more than one phase of bauxitization.

THE phenomenon of air-hardening is well known in connection with special steels. It occurs when the rate of decomposition of austenite to marten- site is so retarded that it takes place on free cooling in air rather than on more rapid cooling in a quenching bath. If an air-hardening steel is quenched sufficiently rapidly it will remain in the soft austenitic state, while if it is cooled very slowly it will again become soft owing to growth of the carbide particles. It depends on a critical adjustment of the decomposition velocity and diffusion rate, and such alloys are rather rare, especially in the non-ferrous field. In carrying out some experiments on some copper- rich copper-cobalt alloys, the author found that these possess very marked air-hardening properties. The alloys are covered by a patent issued to M. G. Corson (1,723,022-1919), which states that an alloy containing between 2 and 5 per cent cobalt is hardened by simple quenching from above 850° C.
